Just a quick heads-up that I've added a type for generic tuples to the codebase -- Inkscape::Util::Tuple. It consists of a simple struct template and a constructor function template. Tuples may contain up to six elements of arbitrary types. For example, a type for a two-element tuple containing an int and a char const * would be: Tuple<int, char const *> blah; Its constructor may optionally take initial values for its members: Tuple<int, char const *> blah(1, "foo"); The first member is named a, the second b, and so on: cout << blah.a /* int */ << blah.b /* string */ << endl; Also, for creating anonymous tuple values, there is a convenient constructor function which infers the types for you: tuple(5, "testing").b /* string "testing" */ To use tuples, #include "util/tuple.h". n.b. employ 'using' if you don't want to have to spell out Inkscape::Util::Tuple and Inkscape::Util::tuple -- e.g.: using Inkscape::Util::Tuple; using Inkscape::Util::tuple; ...but please keep 'using' out of header files! Inside class bodies is OK though. Just thought you all might find tuples useful.. -mental

win32 installer

Hi All, I did an win32 installer. I took the installer script from the CVS changed the 38 to 39. Attached the script. But I only have a geocities account that allows me upload-chunks up to 5MB. The installer is 11 MB. How to proceed? HTH, Adib.

Release status

Hello there. I was just wondering where in the release process are we? It wasn't totally clear to me whether or not it is already official and to be announced in the wild. Is it? May I now? The download page states that many packages are "coming soon", yet they are in SF's filelist. Also, Bryce, I just noticed today that I sat in front of the computer, the MDK91 RPM shows Inkscape in the "Graphics" menu, yet MDK91 uses "Multimedia -> Graphics" for that. I'm still receiving a lot of hits in the bleeding-edge autobuilds, but they are all 0.39rc* builds. Should I put a note about SF there? Mandrake 10 rpm & autopackage issues

Hi, if I get the src.rpm and rebuild it to get an rpm for my Mandrake 10 system, is that usable for other Mandrake 10 users? Just asking in case it's useful for the download area. Thanks, PS. I tried to install the autopackage version but I got an error: err:waitForHELLO() failed to synchronize with front end: UHOH VERSION_MISMATCH It downloaded version 0.6 of autopackage an then issued this error. I had installed a cvs version of the inkscape autopackage before. 0.39 -> 0.40 + OLS

Hi All, With Inkscape 0.39 out the door, our next target is 0.40. Notice we're at #17 on SourceForge now :-) The 0.40 development process looks like it'll be pretty much like 0.39. We have a principle development focus - conversion to Gtkmm - plus as much freeform development as can be squeezed into the time we'll have. Gtkmm conversion looks like a lot of work, but then so did Pango, and look how swiftly the team knocked that out. ;-) I don't know if we need "a plan" for the Gtkmm conversion; if we do, then within a few weeks we can do so. Looking forward beyond 0.40, there are other big changes to come that we can start preparing for presently. The Extensions work is one example; the proposed spec will hopefully provide a starting point for this. Another example is the eventual rewrite of the style class and creation of a more complete CSS implementation for Inkscape. I'm also looking forward to seeing what we can do with improved testing systems and what potential Cairo holds. These are just a few of the cool things waiting in the wings. Speaking of Cairo, I've sat in on the two talks by Keith Packard and Jim Gettys on the rearchitecture of X. Keith did his presentation in SVG, but his Cairo-based viewer was very slow rendering it, compared with inkview. :-) A lot of interesting work is being done with X these days. In addition to Cairo (which they're hoping to see more apps pick up and use), they're also looking at LittleCMS (or something derived thereof) as a universal color management system (the one currently in X is very broken and nobody uses it.) In the past, a link to the SF download page was probably sufficient, but now with fink, autopackage, dev autobuilds, etc. I am thinking we probably need a carefully laid out page pointing at the various packages people need. For Gentoo and Debian systems, the dependency resolution mechanisms are solid enough that autopackage may not be as necessary on those distros, IMHO. It's appreciated though! I think the way we should think about autopackage is as an investment in our future - both for Inkscape and for Open Source in general. It addresses that big white elephant that few like to think about - it's painful for new Linux users to install ordinary apps like Inkscape. I think Autopackage is going to lead the way to inspiring the next generation of Linux installation technology. It's cool that Inkscape can help raise awareness for Autopackage while at the same time serving its own self-interest in making it easier for people to install the program.
