Ok, it looks like we need to have a chat about these "*forward.h" files I see cropping up that keep killing my rebuild times when I try to do class-level refactoring. I realize the intent was to reduce #include dependencies, but they actually make the problem far worse: since a whole lot of unrelated stuff is grouped in one file that everyone includes, adding or removing a class requires a rebuild of fricking EVERYTHING... And, really, do you need a header file for this? -- class Foo; class Blah; No, you do not. It's wasteful. All it asserts is that the classes (or structs) Foo and Blah definitely exist somewhere, to keep the compiler happy and avoid ambiguity. You can perfectly well put that directly in files where Foo or Blah are used opaquely without losing any maintainability (if either class gets removed or renamed, you'll need to edit those files regardless). Best thing is the files that only use Foo and not Blah won't need to be recompiled if Blah is removed or renamed anymore... So, please, STOP USING THESE BLOODY FORWARD HEADERS. I am removing xml/xml-forward.h today. I don't want to see any new ones cropping up. -mental

Install problems and then bigger ones

Oh my! Well, I'm between a successful make (after finally getting configure to work) and the make install when I read this. I have installed all these rpms (I just didn't scroll far enough to see them before) and now what? Should I continue with the install? Should I remove the rpms? Next step?????? This looks like something that might be documented a bit better on the web site.... Thanks so much for the info...I have never seen such comprehensive and impressive responses on a list before. My mail box (and yours as well) is full of thoughtful replies. Says this is where to go for compile problems

Howdy...just heard about Inkscape this AM. I am not a developer, would be a casual user at best, but would like to take a gander. User, repeat USER, of Fedora Core 3. Not a coder, programmer (or even artist for that matter!) However I'm having problems compiling. When I ran configure it told me configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile Inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc Fair enough. I got it (and thanks for including the URL) and it compiled fine without me changing or doing anything--just accepted its defaults and whiz, in it went. OK, back to Inkscape and configure croaks at the same place. Same error message. What do I need to do to have Inkscape know this is in, or how do I need to compile, install, whatever to communicate that? Thanks- Jim Clark

shortcuts in localized keyboard layouts

I have just committed a fix for bug 962839 where keyboard shortcuts didn't work if you switch keyboard to a non-English layout. The fix seems to work at least for Cyrillic keyboard on Linux. Please test and report your results.

svg and svgz io

I got my changes committed. It now uses xmlReadIO instead of xmlParseFile, so it should handle 'tricky' AKA non-ASCII/ANSI filenames on Windows. Additionally, it now has an extension for .svgz and the saving and loading inside of repr-io.cpp handles the compression using zlib ourselves, so it should work nice on Linux *and* on Windows with not tricky futzing. To do this, I started using the stuff in Inkscape::IO / src/io/* Take a peek and see if this stuff works for you guys also.

perspective / free-transform code in inkscape from gimp

G'day guys, Whenever I have needed to transform a vector Illustration along a perspective I've had to go through the horrible process of: - importing my svg as paths into gimp - exporting and opening in inkscape - re-drawing all colours, stroke preferences and gradients to suit the new angle. with the transformed rasterisation from gimp as a reference.. free-transform is a feature that I and no doubt many more artists are desperate for within inkscape. Without it creates a limit to the range of artwork produceable from within inkscape While i was visiting PJRM & NJH in melbourne I discussed this process and how it would be sweet if we could grab some of the gimp code to allow inkscape to do a perspective transform. PJRM made an awesome modification a while ago where after transforming a group in some way, all ungrouped objects are no longer stuck with a transform matrix applied to each object. The location of all things are now converted into each shape's coords. So that now saves bloat and to my understanding also helped solve one massive problem with inkscape files being rendered in rsvg and transform matricies not being taken into account. End of Hard Freeze for 0.41 Release

Hi all, Bulia and Kees have given word that the codebase is now ready for release. Ted has tagged and branched, and has posted the release tarball. Kees is working on producing the release packages. We're putting in the final tweaks to the release announcements and notes. At this time, the codebase is now officially unfrozen and open for regular development. We have had a very good, strict release with 0.41. We have been very cautious about adding new dependencies, and focused heavily on bug fixing. For 0.42, we're going to change gears. This release will be much more freeform and open to aggressive new changes. Bug fixing will take second seat to feature implementation and major architectural changes. As soon as you're ready, feel free to merge in code that's been sitting on the sidelines for 0.41. I expect this will destabilize the codebase for quite some time to come, but that's okay. It may be a number of months before we're ready to make another release, but with such a strong 0.41 release out the door we're well set for this development phase. During this next phase, there are two rules I think would be worthwhile for us to abide. The first is to strive to always keep the codebase buildable within a day. In other words, be respectful of the needs of other developers by trying to only check in compilable code, and if you don't, to correct it within 24 hrs. Second, if you want to add a new dependency to the codebase, please discuss this on the mailing list first. We definitely can add new dependencies for 0.42 but let's make sure we have a rough concensus favoring it before committing. The first rule will save us pain in the short term, the second will save us pain in the long term. :-) Thanks everyone, and great work with 0.41! Have fun with 0.42. :-) Bryce

graphics suite and consistancy, bug lists

First another screenshot of the gimp close dialog. unforuntately this one is different. if you have not already saved a file it fails to give you the option to Save and instead gives you a different dialog with only close and discard. http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~horkana/gimp-close-unsaved.png I'll probably have to file a bug about this later, but it will be hard for inkscape to be consistant with an application that is not consistant with itself. Back to the oringal purpose of this message I decided I'd rummage through bugzilla and try and pick out some bugs or issues that might help with consistancy issues, so that if anyone was interested they might sign up to gnome bugzilla and make some suggestions with respect to Inkscape. by influencing the future direction of the gimp it might make consistancy with Inkscape easier later on report discussing the modifier keys used by some of the GIMP tools, might be worth noting in any discussions on keyboard shortcuts http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120973 request for a "Customizable Toolbar" and this would probably be similar to the top toolbar in inkscape. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133030 report about XMP and IPTC might be of interst, points to lots of other relevant bugs http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94416 request to reorganise the gimp scripts and filters http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=116145 some ideas but no definative plan the Wiki also features a discussion on menu reorganisation http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/GimpMenuReorganization There are probably more bits and pieces of gimp developement that active users or developers could take a quick look at and add their opinion to help try and make things more consistant.
