I've been pondering the object style minibar, and come up with a variation on the current idea. It's not a huge difference. Basically fill and stroke get their own square areas, and stroke is a thick outline rather than a solid box. That way it's immediately clear which is which. The boxes are divided diagonally -- the upper right side of each box is the paint with full opacity, and the lower left side is the paint with the actual opacity, over a checkerboard. The absence of a fill or stroke would be represented by the traditional red-on-white slash, and probably unset by a question mark or something (to match the fill and stroke dialog). I think I'd also like to see the traditional red-and-white slash in the fill and stroke dialog as well... There's a mock-up attached. Comments/critiques? -mental

I can see it is indeed the rendering issue I suspected; the hairline is an artifact of an antialiasing technique used by Inkscape and many other vector graphics renderers. Essentially, a shape partially covering a pixel is simulated by making that pixel semi-transparent. This looks acceptable in most cases, but there are a few cases it behaves badly for -- exactly adjacent edges, for example. Here's the deal: when the border between the two shapes doesn't fall exactly on the boundary between pixels (this is why zoom or scrolling can make a difference), you end up with one shape covering part of a pixel, and the other shape covering the remainder. Shape A: Shape B: +---+---+ +---+---+ |AAA|...| |...|BBB| |AAA|...| |...|BBB| +---+---+ +---+---+ Obviously, if we overlap these, we should get a pixel whose color is 50% A and 50% B, right? +---+---+ |AAA|BBB| |AAA|BBB| +---+---+ Well... problem is that by the time they're combined, the renderer has already flattened these partially-covered pixels into flat pixels with transparency (alpha). The information about which portions of the pixel are covered by which colors is lost. Using only the alpha information, if you composite A at 50% alpha, and B at 50% alpha, you get a pixel whose color is 25% the background color, 25% A, and 50% B (assuming B is "above" A in the stack). Hence, a one-pixel seam of 25% background color shows through... There are better antialiasing methods available which don't exhibit this problem, but they are less often used because they are generally slower (so are likely to see the problem with other renderers too). We can't really do anything about how it'll appear in other renderers, but Inkscape should probably implement one of the better antialiasing methods as a special "high-quality" rendering mode. -mental

compliling errors in MEPIS/Debian libgc needed

Hi All, Trying to compile Inkscape, using MEPIS version 3.4-2, (which is the most current version). I managed to install the libpng and also zlib but then on trying once again to configure I am told that libgc is needed. I downloaded and unzipped these files (binaries, no?) but what do I do with them? I am kind of new at this. Can anyone help? I have used Inkscape in Windows but want to migrate. Trouble on sourceforge.

Hi, is anyone else having trouble using the sourceforge patch tracker? I'm trying to upload an updated translation but I keep getting "forgotten" by SF. When I log in I can perfectly access and edit my personal details, but when I go to the Inkscape project page and try to upload a patch I keep getting the warning that I must log in and I can't upload a patch as anonymous user. Should I send the file to the list? Arpad? compiling Inkscape

Problem with Snapping/new Document Properties pannel

Happy New Year to everybody and let 2006 be the year when Inkscape rules! I recently tested the new document properties pannel on mac os X. I think I am a bit late for that but I liked better the first one (with frames) because it was more compact even if it was not HIG compliant. Would it be possible to have the metadata tab scrollable and the others more compact so that the dialog is smaller. I keep this one open very frequently to change snapping settings and I think it would be really nice to have it smaller. Another problem is with snapping and the freehand and bezier tools: snapping to grid seems to be always on for these tools as long as the grid is displayed and whatever the status of snapping is in the Document Properties pannel (even before the it is changed). Is it the desired behaviour? If it is it should be the same for all tools and it does not seem to be the case. Finally, the current distinction between "screen pixels" and "px units" is not really clear to me. what are px units? 1 px unit = 1 grid unit? may be it could be explained a bit better if it is to be kept. Thank you in advance for considering this. I would happily fill a bug report for the second problem if it is necessary. JiHO. PS: for testing purposes the new document preferences pannel is in the last two dev builds for mac os X (24 december and 4 january). btw, is there no way to have the downloads for these builds mirrored and handled by sourceforge? because the download rate is awfully low and the download fails very often.

ERROR WITH INKSCAPE 0.43-2WIN32-PANGO LINE 75

I am using Windows ME to try to load INKSCAPE 0.43-2 after installation - but it crashes. All that I get instead are the following error messages back to back: PANGO ERROR**:file shape.c:line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed:(glyphs-> num_glyphs > 0) aborting... "Then after that I get": PANGO ERROR**:file shape.c:line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed: (glyphs-> num_glyphs > 0) aborting... Pango warning (recursed)**:Couldn't load font "MS Sans Serif 8" falling back to Sans 8" aborting... I am attatching screenshots of these errors as they appear on my screen. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS AND HOW CAN I MAKE IT STOP? - IS THERE A CORRECTIVE PATCH OR SOMETHING? I can't even get INKSCAPE to load - PLEASE HELP ME! ODG format?

Does anyone know how well we support the Open Document - Graphics (ODG) format? Is there an ODG<->SVG converter? ODG is part of the OpenDocument Format used by OpenOffice. There's a listing of apps that support it here, and it'd sure be nice if we could get Inkscape listed there.
