Hey all, I just got the rejection letter from Google. I wanted to let you guys know that I will definitely try to make an effort and contribute a bit to the community anyway, but I do take this as a bit of a sign - it's the gods telling me I should work on my thesis as much as I can this summer ;) Hopefully I can contribute something to the conversation on SVG Fonts (assuming Felipe was accepted, but I think that's a safe assumption), and I know there are a good number of text bugs that might be a good place for me to spend short bursts of time. Inkscape and the Hackontest

Is anyone interested getting Inkscape into the the Hackontest? Seems to me like if registered, Inkscape would have a pretty good chance of being accepted. Inkscape has a large user base -- good for getting votes from the loyal Inkscape's purpose is easy to understand -- good for getting votes from people who've never even heard of it Inkscape is modular enough -- you need a project idea that can realistically be done in 24 hrs, and many things like cool new LPEs or exporters or importers could realistically be done in that time frame. Inkscape has a huge list of contributors -- important because you need to actually get 3 people willing to go to Sweeden and code for 24 hrs straight. I think Inkscape would have a good shot. --bb

X,Y,W,H settings do not change independently

Hi inkscape-devel, I notice that when I want to draw an object with a particular X,Y,W,H this is not easy, because these settings do not change independently. For example, I want to draw a box 210x297 centered at 0,0 (i.e. W=210, H=297, X=-105, Y=-148.5). I make sure I am using geometric bounding box, and I draw the box by hand with a random size and position, then I enter these values in the W,H,X,Y fields. But when I enter some of these values, they change the other values slightly! Is this a bug, and is there a way to correct this behavior? Thank you, qazxswedcvfrtgbnhyujmkiolp2000

I asked if he'd create a bunch of stock filters for us to provide, as bulia mentioned a desire a while back for "easy filters". So, it's definitely a phenomenal start. But we also need to figure out how to implement the UI for easy filters. Just via menu options with no params? An "easy" dialog which hides the advanced bits? Or filter specific dialogs like the effects? Any other ideas? Unfortunately, the problem is that we now have figure out where some filter related issues lie. I tried opening up the file in Batik, but it sees it as invalid. Are we producing invalid svg, or is batik just really picky? Also, some filters render differently in Firefox 3 & Opera 9.5. So at this point, we shouldn't get overly excited until A) we're producing files batik likes (or we file a bug report with them if the problem is on their end) and B) we figure out who really has the most accurate filter implementation and either match it, or inform them if ours is "better". -Josh

Just my humble opinion on how Inkscape reads SVG files, is to be very forgiving on input file parsing. In case of a minor format violation, try to correct it. Report the worst errors, of course. And then do Inkscape's best to generate clean and proper data. Thus, over time, Inkscape has a side effect of gradually mending a domain of broken files. A lot of editors do it this way. Do we want to reject an XML file if it is horribly munged? Sure. But if it merely needs a bit of tender care, then allow it. Then instead of merely telling users to fix their file, Inkscape does the fix itself. Use validation to tell people why their file has a problem. But don't always reject it.

NEW: Live preview of extension effects optional

While the "Live preview" checkbox is useful for most effects, for some it just does not make sense. Now, you can add the attribute needs-live-preview="false" in the effect element in the .inx file of the effect to suppress this checkbox for your effect. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Bug triaging help needed

Heya all, Have you been enjoying Inkscape and wondering about an easy way to contribute back? Bug triaging may be for you! Bug triaging is basically our first line step in the process of handling bugs. It's like being the host in a restaraunt - you don't fix the bugs, you just make sure the reporter has been greeted and find where they should sit. You can see the problem we're trying to solve by just looking at this plot: http://people.ubuntu.com/~brian/project-graphs/inkscape/plots/inkscape-mont… Or, this one is less intimidating since it shows the progress we'd made prior to the release: http://people.ubuntu.com/~brian/project-graphs/inkscape/plots/inkscape-half… (There is a friendly navigation web thingee here: http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Plots/) The job is to keep our total # of New bugs at as close to 0 as possible. We're up towards 200 now, so there's a bit of work to get caught up on, but once that's caught up you can see that there's a rate of about 3 new bugs/day. Triaging is pretty easy; anyone can do it - you just need to sign up for a launchpad bug account. (For extra triaging powers you can also join the Inkscape bug team.) Then you read each bug report that comes in, and make sure it has all the necessary information for developers to troubleshoot it. So for example, this may include asking people to include screenshots, steps to reproduce the issue, backtraces, and/or example files; then you set it to Incomplete state. Then, you also review bugs that are in 'Incomplete with response' and check if they've included the needed info, and move them into Completed state. You can see the bugs still in Incomplete state via the Plots link above. And that's pretty much it. If you are looking for a way to contribute some help to Inkscape that doesn't require an extensive time commitment, this is one of the easiest ways to make a difference. Plus it's addictive! You can track your "karma score" at this link: https://launchpad.net/inkscape/+topcontributors Getting yourself up into the top 5 is a good challenge if you have the interest and time to put into it. Karma degrades over time, so even if you're starting from 0 you have a chance to catch up and pass the long timers! Bryce
