Thanks god someone saw this.
Yes, it's a bug and in my opinion, is of high importance because it's a
regression on something that was working fine.
I reported this bug a week ago.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/325162
As it was discussed before, the blending modes in individual elements is
a headache because they need a solid element behind to show correctly
(that was the main reason of moving the blend modes to the layers
dialog, and it's still quite broken).
That feBlend filter in the blur effect should be reverted asap.
Imo the blend filters should be removed from everywhere except the
filters dialog, since the problem of the background acumulation isn't
solved, and lost feBlend filters use to be a pain when they left applied
on an object after an undone operation (unexperienced users will have a
really hard time trying to see why some objects disappear or look bad
over others, until they finally figure out that there's a filter applied
and it has to be removed).

Blur slider and feBlend
by Ivan Louette
In fact I find this feature very useful. The only problem is that it isn't at the best place.

Yes it's like a bug, but this is also the only simple way at the moment to activate this very useful kind of blend which isn't available by the Filters Editor. Thus before removing it that should be kind to offer another solution. I tried it in association with my filters and assuming you apply it after having grouped your already filtered object it works like a charm !

Indeed it now inserts blendmode! This looks like a bug, I will raise a
hell on the devel list now.

I'm also a linux user myself, so I'd love to se your proposal
implemented. The portion of my message you quoted is a little out of
context, I was replying to someone who was a Windows user and thought
that Tango icons are *linux only*, iirc.
I was suggesting an icon theme changer in the UI if a better solution
wasn't possible, but your solution is far more elegant and convenient.
And honestly, I don't care much about windows :)

Disconnected Arabic letters
by Boutros Saba
Hello there,
I installed the last 0.46 version my Tiger (10.4.11) Mac OS X. When I
write Arabic I get disconnected letters - not as Arabic should be.
I had an earlier version (I don't remember which one) that worked
perfectly on the same OS version.
I tried to install all prior version down until 0.43 - and the
problem wasn't fixed.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

eraser tool opinions?
by bulia byak
Now that the Eraser tool is in SVN for quite some time, what do people
think of it? Is it useful? In what mode do you use it, if at all?
Disclaimer: as you may remember I was against this tool from the
beginning, considering it redundant. Its Delete mode is equivalent to
Alt+drag followed by Del in Selector, and its Cut mode is now
equivalent to Alt+drag in Calligraphic pen which I just added:
* When drawing with <b>Alt</b>, Inkscape <b>subtracts</b> the path you
have created from the selected path (with <b>Shift</b>, it adds to the
selected path). This allows you to quickly patch or fix problems in a
stroke you have drawn without leaving the tool.
So, do we really have to spend the prime toolbar space on a tool which
does what other tools already do?

Re : Filters top-level menu?
by Ivan Louette
Why not "Filter Manager" ? It doesn't only edit or create filters. It adds and removes them too.

Objet : [Inkscape-devel] Filters top-level menu?
I think filters are sufficiently complex, different from everything
else, and have enough support in Inkscape now, so they deserve to be
treated more like a top-level entity. In particular, I propose to add
a new menu, Filters, before Effects. It would contain:
- All the submenus with preset filter that are now in Effects >
Filters. Ivan Louette is working on a huge and exciting expansion of
that hierarchy, adding lots of powerful new filters. It's obviously
too deeply hidden now, it deserves more visibility as one of the most
important 0.47 additions.
- The "Filter Effects..." dialog command which I propose to rename to
"Build Filters" or "Filter Builder" or something like that. The
current name is not very descriptive and even a bit misleading due to
the word "effects" which refers to too many too different things in
Inkscape (once again, let me reiterate my old wish: rename "Effects"
menu to "Extensions", that is what they are!). The typical workflow
would be to first choose one of the presets, then if needed, go to the
Filter Builder to adjust the preset or start a new filter from
scratch.
- The Remove Filter command.
Thoughts?

SVGFonts not working
by Felipe Sanches
hello guys,
does anybody has a clue on why SVGFonts code stopped working?
JucaBlues
-------------
(09:01:51) Juca: SVG Fonts code is broken currently
(09:01:58) Juca: and I have no idea why
(09:02:18) Juca: at least for me it stopped working sometime ago (1 or 2
weeks maybe)
(09:02:26) Juca: does it work for you?
(09:02:39) Juca: maybe it is an issue with my cairo version
(09:03:16) Alexandre Prokoudine: honestly, I find it difficult to use the
current implementation
(09:03:30) Alexandre Prokoudine: starting with having no idea in what form
to input unicode value
(09:03:48) Juca: yeah, I agree
(09:03:58) Alexandre Prokoudine: and finishing with no numeric input for
kerning value
(09:03:59) Juca: currently we input the char itsef
(09:04:16) Juca: not the codepoint value
(09:05:03) Juca: but does it render anything (even the default missing
glyph) in the text preview area?
(09:05:10) Alexandre Prokoudine: nope
(09:05:15) Juca: it is not rendering in my builb
(09:05:16) Alexandre Prokoudine: and it never did for me
(09:05:20) Juca: hmmm
(09:05:42) Juca: it worked for me during some time and then misteriously
stopped working
(09:05:57) Juca: it worked while I was activelly developing it
(09:06:11) Juca: since SoC until 2 weeks ago at least I think
(09:06:36) Alexandre Prokoudine: maybe your cairo has a secret switch that
worked only for you :)
(09:06:43) Juca: :-P

SVGFonts oncanvas without pango userfont support?
by Felipe Sanches
this thread is meant to brainstorm the possibility of implementing SVGFonts
rendering on canvas without use of libpango.
Since libpango development of the userfonts feature is very slow (currently
at 0% done), I would like to ask you to keep in mind the possibility of
adding special cases for SVG Fonts in the font family selector and in the
text rendering on canvas.
I am not asking you (Milosz) to implement it. I just would like to be sure
that you are aware of this need and, if possible, I would like to brainstorm
a bit about what should we do to better integrate SVGFonts rendering on
canvas even without pango support.

New OS X Package
by Milosz Derezynski
Dear Inkscape team - it's a package.
The package was built on 10.5 and is Intel only.
The package was built from SVN rev. 20630 and it uses Gtk+/Quartz instead of
X11 windowing.
There are a few bugs when running Inkscape on Gtk+/Quartz which I'm
attempting to fix
at the moment, once I have them fixed I will upload an updated package
accordingly.
I hope that despite the limited usability of the package (Intel-only) it can
find some use.
The package can be downloaded at:
