Tarballs for trunk

I semi-regularly build trunk versions of Inkscape for Fedora, and as part of this process, I generate the tarballs using "make dist". I am now uploading these generated tarballs to here: http://inkscapetarballs.ryanlerch.org/ for people to use. Note that these arent auto-generated or nightly by any stretch of the imagination, but will just appear there when i run a new trunk build for Fedora. cheers, ryanlerch

Transformation center issues

Hi people, The past weeks I've been trying to fix some transformation center offset regressions, which were caused by the new unit/viewbox stuff. That should all work reasonably well again, but it remains a headache. IMHO this transformation center handling is broken by design, and judging by some comments in the code I'm not the only one to think so. It requires all kinds of special casing everywhere transformations are being applied, due to the transformation center being expressed in horizontal/vertical coordinates, relative to the center of the bounding box. Does anybody know why it was designed like this? If there are no strong objections, then I'd propose to use absolute coordinates, and to apply transformations as if it were simply a point of a path. This would make code much cleaner. We will no longer need to call document->ensureUpToDate() to force an update of the bounding box everytime the center is requested or changed. It might also allow us to get rid of the weird behavior of the transformation center (which should rotate with the item in case an object is rotated!) Not that I'm going to change this now, but I might get to this after the 0.91 release. Diederik

Inkscape Mailing List Migration

Hi Devs, In the process of moving away from sourceforge, we have OSOUL on stand by to create replacement mailing lists for us. In order to do this, we need archives. Of course this would create a forking point for each of the lists. The process works like this: * Get the admins on sourceforge give me admin privilages to all existing mailing lists. * A script to take subscriber lists and archive mboxes out is prepared. * The OSOUL ticket for making mailing lists requires them to join irc for some immediate actions. * Once the new list is online, the old one is disabled and a message is sent out to everyone on the list. * A new message is sent out on the new list. SVG Working Group - Sydney report

Hi, I have posted a report from last weeks SVG face-to-face meeting in Sydney: http://tavmjong.free.fr/blog/?p=1226 It was a very successful meeting: * We worked through many of the remaining issues on auto-flowed text with the participation of the CSS working group. * My proposal for text-on-a-shape was approved. * My proposal for 'auto-closing' of curved paths was approved. * My proposal for 'auto-smoothing' of mesh gradients was approved. * A new "clipped' miter line-join was approved. (Instead of falling back to a bevel line join when the miter-limit is exceeded, the line-join is clipped at the limit.) * How the miter-limit effects the arc line-join was decided. * We resolved most of the important issues blocking moving the SVG 2 spec to the next stage of the specification process and targeted the next face-to-face meeting in June for making the transition. * None of the important features for Inkscape were removed from the core SVG 2 specification (except marker knockouts which still needs a lot of work). Teto critique and other

Hello Francois, Clearly, you have no clue what SVG is about and don't care about the concept of open standards. I think that is the basis of your problem. That said, I think part of your criticism is justified. On accord of the UI, there is a lot to be desired and it is a problem that needs to be tackled sooner rather than later. I for one am dreaming of a fully customisable UI with SVG widgets that can be scaled to whatever size the end user would desire and alternatively would allow for easy adaptation using CSS style sheets. That would require mainly an API for Inkscape that would allow for Python or Javascript to access functions in the application at the same level as the current UI does. It might even allow for using a different renderer as it could render in a browser that way, lowering dependencies on a single 3rd party library. I also see advantages to move the processing of rendering into a cloud that with multithreading of processing might then do all the dirty work and render your 100.000 object plus Gaussian blur filter with transparency in a mere few seconds. As there are quite a few other issues at hand to be tackled, I can imagine that hiring a team of UI design nazi's to reorganise and mainatain the Inkscape UI is low on the list of priorities. If anything I would suggest to use any proceeds from the fund raiser to try and produce an Inkscape API that would facilitate a total redesign of the UI or enable users a elegant and simple way to change them to their hearts desire. Think about what could be done with that by a team of people that do nothing but UI and UX design, but have no clue about how to run a make file. However, that will not be anytime soon. When you write criticism about software like Inkscape, try to imagine that a multitude of people have dedicated their spare time on this project for the pleasure of creating a usable tool and sometimes going a bit over the top in producing feasibility experiments. The nice thing about Inkscape is that it has some functions you will not find in any other software, simply because nobody ever thought about it or would not bother to spend so much time on it. LPE's are one of them. Now sadly these functions are often the product of a single person who may have a brain for maths but not for design and UI design. The fact they come up with something as usable as many UI objects are I think is quite an achievement, but a lack of consistency is a direct result. But I cannot be clear enough about the amount of respect I have for these people that have managed to come up with a a tool that can compete and in many ways surpasses the abilities of software created by monopolist companies that will deprecate their older file formats at a whim. Inkscape as it is, is an amazing piece of software despite a long list of desires that anyone may have. The mere fact that people like you and me are addressed to when we come with our unhinged remarks is equally amazing. We are addressing their passion child with criticisms while it is reaching a level of maturity that few would have envisioned when they started their endevour to produce the next best thing to cheese. That they react a bit grumpy when we do is to be understood, so would I. On accord of SVG not being the best format for diagrams, I and other clearly disagree with you. SVG is the best format for diagrams, but Inkscape isn't the best tool for it. If you use Libreoffice you can create all the diagrams you want and make an export to SVG that will do most of the work for you. Inkscape has some functionality, but the focus on it is low. Probably also because the nearly completed SVG 2 is about to come with some nifty methods for that to incorporate and it would be waste of time and effort to do that now. Flow text has been a pain for years due to Adobe murdering SVG 1.2. They're one of the reasons you see mainly png, jpg, gif and maybe you can recall they bought Flash at some point that coincides with that happening. One of the nice things of using SVG for instance is that you can extend its functionality if you want. Have a look at this for diagrams and maybe you'll get the point I'm trying to make. Yeah,.. it lacks a nice GUI for sure and it doesn't do artistic things the way you want, but if you understand how to draw your objects in Inkscape and do a <use> object in SVG, you might save yourself some time in producing some really serious diagrams. What it takes is a good API for Inkscape with documentation. If there is an API, the lesser gods of programming can take the UI for a spin. It would even be feasible to have a UI design team being addressed by the creators of functions to style a UI for a new function that way, making a separation of skills and thus getting the best results on both ends possible. For complex projects that is a better way to create and maintain it, just like you would do OOP in programming. Guarding a house style visually is easier for many people than good programming styles. If Inkscape has a way for them to not screw it up they will be more daring. Truly, the fund raising text is a bit of a dud. Maybe I can come up with a text along the lines of Alex suggestion that is a bit more specific. I guess it is more in my marketing expertise to do something like that and I want to make this passion child of ours even better than cheese. If you could send me a list of things to be addressed and what benefits there are to be had that would be enough to work on. I guess 3 would be a bit too much work to find. I would suggest making a list of issues, what they solve and have people interested in addressing those issues tag them for interest to work on with a link to their resumes or something like it. That way it would also be easier to assemble teams on a topic once the fund raising target has been met. Some estimate of time involved to tackle an issue would be handy as that can be used to set a fund raising target. It would also allow for companies that have a slump time in the current economic situation to take on an issue. You wouldn't want a single company to be the whole team I guess in case the slump time is over and they have to make some real money again, but it may enable some to pay the wages of a currently redundant employee. I see a win win situation in that. For others it may just be what they need to cover their rent and food bills to get seriously involved in something they always wanted to do, but never had the opportunity to. Not that many people have jobs that allow them time for FOSS development. Let everyone that would like to manage a project create a Gantt chart such a project and scrutinise it with all involved and/or outsiders have a say in this process. Those hours should be billed once the Gantt chart is accepted and the fund raising is completed. That way part of the whole process can start before the end of a fund raising and people can get an insight into the amount of time and effort is involved. It will also set clear targets for everyone. Another advantage of Gantt charts is that managers understand those and they often have the keys to funds. If they think a project that addresses their problems is feasible, they may be more inclined to throw some serious dough at it. Enthusiasts may also be able to convince their managers with that. I'm also pretty sure I can come up with a good marketing plan to find funds, once we have a good method in place. There are plenty of companies that are less than thrilled with working in the cloud and would for instance support any effort of Inkscape to get good CMYK and Spot color support. Sure there are issues on both that are hard to address, but finding a way to address these issues may be an interesting project in itself. Find a method and I am sure there are people interested in funding that method even if it takes a buck. There are plenty of people that would like to see a bit of competition between Adobe and a viable alternative that would be able to lift the whole project to a new level. I know people may be averse to that, but I see it as inevitable anyway. Inkscape has too much clout and potential not to professionalise like all other projects of this scope. And Francois,.. after all these comments and the time involved in it, I would say that you can at least sent a tenner. If you're smart and capable, you'd sent more as it would probably be faster to make Inkscape do what you'd like it to do than find some nice product that does all. Alternatively hire a team and make it happen by proposing a project of your needs. Other than all the other software you know, this is the one application you can influence to suit your needs. I think there's some difference between a site made for the most part in svg for graphics, and a site with just its logo. Yep, sure, except that now I'm sure that Inkscape will never be what I wish. Unify the UI for tools like Filters, LPE and so on ? Don't count on that, you said, because of "debts" and the fact that it's too much work. OK, so you tell me that you'll never touch of those "debts" ? Do you realize that a day or another, you soft will be stuck because of this, and it will be impossible to improve because "really too much work" ? Is it really not possible to change that now, when it's not too late ? (or maybe it's already too late ?) Now I clearly see what Inkscape will be. A soft that can draw in the svg (2, 5, whatever) standard, but with an user interface that is a pain to use for many tools, and limited by its own structure. Sorry, I won't pay 100$ for this. I'll prefer pay that for a soft that fits my """artist""" needs. Don't get me wrong. Again, I don't want fo insult anyone. The soft is great, and fairly perfect for 80% of my needs. But I do know now that for more ambitious drawings I'll need another vector soft, more artist-oriented. There are many cheap softs for painters (really good, and without a standard to follow !), no doubt there will be new softs for vector artists sooner or later (Illustrator doesn't count, too expensive). Dropping colours from document or into Swatches through colourpicker etc.

As I cannot reach launchpad (with all of China having holidays I cannot even reach Tav's Inkscape manual pages). I'd like to drop this wish/idea here. Ehmm,.. Setting swatches seems less than intuitive to me and I cannot access the manual. Maybe there is a method already that I am not aware of, but how feasible would it be to create a swatch object and then drop the colour into it from the document. Lets say that I'd like to create a number of swatches in a non defined set of colours. I'd make 32 swatches of non defined colour (Additional Button: New) and just pick them up from the screen through the colour picker and change them to my hearts content and save them into a new list. It would make the whole swatch list into a great productivity tool and it wouldn't take too much effort I think to make it possible. In this setup making a new button with a delete function would be logical as well, just to be complete. It is nice to have all those predefined swatches around, but a simple and fast method to create and save your own seems a much better option to me. Also taking a predef swatch list and adding your custom colours to it might be a nice option. Saving the thus created swatch list could force a save as to keep the predefined swatch lists clean. When selecting the names of the swatches in the list, it would be a nice thing if you could reorder them, so you don't have to scroll down to the bottom every time. Maybe a save as and using an underscore _ could be a simple way to force them to the top. Reordering the swatches themselves would also be great to have. One may use 200 or more swatches, but finding the more common ones can be a bit of a hassle. Maybe something like a palette within the swatch docker would be an option. Let the user create a grid of size Columns x Rows and drag his preferred swatches to it. Any option on swatches I actually would expect to find in the swatch menu. Currently the interface has two very similar icons in it. A top menu icon with a left pointing arrow and one a few pixels lower with the same shape giving a drop down menu. How about making the second one a arrow pointing down to make clear it is something dropping down? Could be a nice GSOC project ;-) Cheers, Jelle

generate guide with certain color in extension ?

I have build some extensions that generate guides (like guides in a grid with columns and gutters - available here: https://github.com/sambody/inkscape-guide-tools). It works fine, but now that Inkscape 0.91 is out with the ability to change the color (and label) of an existing guide by hand, I had the following question: When I generate a guide in an extension, can I define the color (and label) of the guide when generating ? If yes, how? I'm using a code like this : inkex.etree.SubElement(parent,'{ http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net/DTD/sodipodi-0.dtd}guide ',{'position':position,'orientation':orientation}) I tried with just using 'color':'#ff0000ff' as extra parameter, but that didn't work. If setting the color is possible, I could let the user choose a color for the generated guides, different from their default guide color. Thanks. Samuel

Official release location

Hi All, Please can someone confirm what the official location(s) are for our release files? I guess it's now https://inkscape.org/en/download/ instead of the SourceForge file repo? I ask, because downstream packagers will generally want an official upstream source location to be specified (for automated update notifications etc). Is there a plan to upload the 0.91 tarball on SourceForge, or is that file repository now considered to be obsolete? SF is advantageous for downstream, because the direct-download URL is predictable. Good Press for 0.91

I'd like to thank everyone that helped make this release a success. Often times people focus on coder contributions, but software releases are decidedly multi-disciplinary, and I'd like to specially credit four teams in particular for being well organized, thorough, and dependable. Before the release really even got started, a strong foundation was built for us by the Bug Triaging Team. Especially after such a lengthy development period, with such extensive changes, there can be an overwhelming number of bugs. But due to how thorough the triaging was, we actually had very good transparency into what needed fixed the most. In the past, we've learned that packaging of our windows and osx builds can make or break the release, and even a small glitch can throw everything out of wack. We certainly had our share of packaging challenges to overcome, and more that still need solved, but the Packaging Team developed a good strategy for charting us through to the release, to ensure we'd have functional packages for all platforms within two days. Even now the Translation Team is hard at work on the release announcements and our website. This cycle we allocated ample time to their translation of the application, and I think that paid off in spades. I think this may be the first release where our Web Team played such a crucial role. They established a solid infrastructure both for editing the website and for mirror-caching our downloadables; we have exercised both these functions extremely heavily the last few days, and while we've had a few brief (but quickly fixed) glitches, the infrastructure appears to be shouldering all the loads without complaint. ~ ~ ~ Going forward, my plan is to keep us on course to deliver at least a couple new major releases each year. So, like perhaps shoot for a 0.92 release this summer or early autumn. Maybe even more frequently than that, but to achieve this I think we will need to tighten up in a few areas. First is marketing. Unsurprising after 4 years since the last release, our marketing abilities seem to have atrophied quite severely. We recognized this would be a problem and attempted to fix it; it's my fault we didn't get things organized here in time, but fortunately all the other teams filled in. We can try again for 0.92, and I will work harder to ensure we have a good solid marketing team by then. Second is the release mechanics themselves, which are quite byzantine. Fortunately no one else needed to deal with this but me! A number of steps are manual which should be automated, other steps are redundant but can't be skipped for one reason or other, and there's some steps that have to be carried out by specific people or at specific times. The result is that release management requires handling by someone with release experience to know what knobs need turned and levers need pulled, when and by how much. Instead, we need to systematize all this logic in scripts, so that releases become more like a push-button exercise that any one of us could do. A third area is user documentation. The only reason this hasn't been a release issue is because we haven't got any! :-) We get away with not shipping documentation thanks to having a quite excellent tutorial writing community and well-crafted release notes; users also thankfully have a selection of third-party commercial documentation to fill the gap. But to be considered as professional software, a user manual is a must. Since it'll need updated each release, this implies the need to create a Documentation Team. Inkscape and Eclipse on Windows

I want to compile, and most importantly, debug (single stepping etc.) Inkscape on windows but I am stuck at some of the instructions. I followed this: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Using_Eclipse Then this: http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/BzrEclipse/Installation But at this step there is nothing like "bazaar" in the project window: Go to: *File* --> *New* --> *Project*<<BR>Eclipse opens the new project dialog Under *Bazaar* select *Project From Bazaar* and click *Next*. Eclipse shows the *Eclipse Project From Bazaar* dialog. I installed Eclipse 4.3 Kepler (recommended), but at the download site, there are several sub versions: http://eclipse.org/downloads/packages/release/Kepler/SR2 It is not mentioned which sub version of eclipse you are supposed to download. I downloaded "Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers", but maybe that one is not correct?

The y've got a batik extension to do the following to text and tspan elements: background-color: colour value, default is 'transparent' background-mode: [ line-height | bbox ] background-outline: width of padding outside background color (similar to margin in html) background-outline-{top,right,bottom,left}: specific version of above. line-height: default: 'normal' i.e. font-size *1.1 otherwise size expression, used when background-mode is line-height. In which case background color is proportionally divided between ascent/descent to obtain line-height. Tav - The client claims it's not a part of the svg standard, but have talked with some people about adding it into future versions. Before I did any work, I'd like to nail down exactly what you think will happen (so we don't create something that doesn't make it into the standard) I'm attatching the batik extension file for reference. Hello! I've just downloaded Inkscape and found It very nice. There is all I need which is not lacked in Ms visio. But only one thing dissapointed. Paths connection between figures are static, so while moving figure, connecting path is'nt been updated. I would like to make extension which aggressively snaps path to object. But I can't find propper manual. I suppose to make by analogy with existing exts. So where I can find info about path snapping classes and methods? Or maybe it better to do by parsing xml and dynamically update paths? Also how to acces inner xml? Is it possible to use cpp .dll code in inkscape?

Downstream builds broken: Need distribution of ./autogen.sh

Hi All, Please could someone take a look at the issue reported in bug #1407009 [1] and bug #1418943 [2]? In short... A lot of downstream projects like to regenerate the configuration files by running "autoreconf". Builds fail in 0.91.0 because of changes in the internationalization config. To reproduce: autoreconf -fi ./configure # Config dies with a message about po/Makefile.in.in not being created by intltoolize. To fix this, we need to distribute autogen.sh, and preferably update the macros used in configure.ac. Is there any reason not to do this, and backport to 0.91.1? If there's no feedback, I'll press ahead in the next day or so, since it's holding up the distribution of Inkscape 0.91 to some major downstream projects. Asset creation for SCALE 13x conference

Hi, Inkscape will once again have a booth at the SCALE 13x conference this year ( http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/13x ). To help with our presence, and to highlight the new release, we are producing some assets for the booth. We will be getting a large two-sided banner that will also be usable for future conferences Inkscape might have a presence at. And for giving away at the booth we will be getting some mini-business cards and stickers. The latter two will be done through moo.com. If anyone would like to lend a hand with suggesting or creating graphics for these pleas let me know. We might have a line on designs for the banners and mini cards, but much will depend on the availability of different individuals. The stickers will be a run of 180 total, but we can have many designs up to each sticker being different. Test failures in 0.91

I'm looking at 0.91 for BLFS [http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/] and we usually tell people how to run tests, if they wish to. I've now installed lxml and numpy, but I'm getting 5 failures. First question: do you intend that a builder should run these tests, or are they, like some packages, there to be run before the release ? I ask that because the only things that seem to run without the Python modules are the cxxtests which XFAIL, and intltool-update and check_markup with the translations. Dear Devels, I have an inkscape using client and I invited him to install inkscape on his windows machine. He's reported an error back to me: missing DLLs: librsvg-2-2.dll, libcroco-0.6-3.dll su_v tested to confirm they're not installed with the msi or IRC and I'm wondering if these are required libraries and should they be packaged? Extra bugs introduced between r13888 and r13893

Hi all, clang scanbuild found 2 extra bugs that were introduced somewhere between r13888 and r13893. See here which ones are new (highlighted in red): http://jenkins.inkscape.org/job/Inkscape_trunk_scan-build/lastSuccessfulBui… (yes you will have to wade through all the other potential bugs that we have [1]) It concerns file /src/widgets/mesh-toolbar.cpp - Johan [1] Jenkins currently uses a threshold of 309 clang scanbuild bugs before it starts flagging builds as unstable. This is obviously way too much, so if you can resolve any of the bug warnings, it'd be a great help, and we can then lower the unstable-threshold. It is of course possible that resolving a false-positive would introduce too much other trouble; in that rare case we can increase the threshold.

Mesh Gradients: Auto Smoothing

Hi, I've implemented some auto-smoothing algorithms for mesh gradients in trunk. It would be very helpful others can have a look a it. Normal Coons Patch mesh gradients suffer from abrupt changes in the color derivatives along patch boundaries which leads to undesirable visible artifacts (Mach Banding). Both Illustrator and CoralDraw implement smoothing to eliminate this problem. I will be proposing to the SVG working group that SVG 2 mesh gradients should have an auto-smoothing option. I've turned on some experimental features in trunk including meshes. Information on how to edit meshes and what smoothing options are implemented can be found at: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Mesh_Gradients Most of the derivative calculations are currently being done using a "Catmul-Rom" method which assumes an evenly spaced grid. It does automated builds, checks for bugs, runs the unittests, generates documentation with doxygen and will publish it online, and in future will also run rendertests. Currently it does those things for Inkscape trunk and 0.91.x branches; and also runs some jobs for lib2geom trunk. If some job fails (i.e. build is broken, a test no longer passes, or clang scanbuild discovers a new potential bug), Jenkins will send a notification email to the inkscape-tester SF maillist. I managed to track down the source of the issue. It looks like gnome vfs has an issue with my system. Specifically, inkscape was hitting the following in src/file.cpp on line 762 when I attempted to save_as() via the dbus interface: g_warning("Could not find the temp saving."); I'm not sure what gnome vfs brings beyond access to remote clip art and usage of /tmp (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=653516), neither of which I need, so I disabled it on my local build: $ ./configure --enable-dbusapi --with-gnome-vfs=no After recompilation, my dbus test case -- specifically save_as() and save() -- works as expected. "Flatten" vectors

Hi, When drawing stuff I usually have a lot of overlapping areas. Sometimes I use a vinyl cutter to cut adhesive foil. Then I need to select the topmost object and subtract it from every object which is (partially) covered by the topmost object. Next, I need to repeat the process with the second-to-topmost object etc. I also need to convert all strokes etc. to paths to actually get paths plotted with non-zero width, otherwise it's just one cut along the path which is useless. I also need to intersect all objects with their respective clip or mask, if they are clipped or masked. For complex drawings this process takes a lot of time. I wondered if there's a plugin or something for "flattening" an image like that, essentially converting it to a set of non-overlapping closed paths without stroke. If there isn't such a functionality I'd like to program it. In which way should this be done? On which branch should I base this? Are there any major changes to parts of Inkscape planned which would interfere with this functionality / should I wait for some changes to be finished before I start? @Krzysztof Did you finish your API changes etc. you started in your GSoC project? Automatic pixel art cleaning

Hello For one of the courses I am doing at the university, I want to create a pixel art cleaner which would complement the recent GSoC pixel art vectorizer. It is a well known problem that most pixel art images available on the Internet are not appropriate inputs for the vectorizer: they have multiplied pixels, additional grids, various artifacts, defacements with watermarks, etc. Here are a few examples: 1. Obviously any successful algorithm will exploit three basic facts about pixel art: 1. The pixels are laid out in a rectangular grid. 2. Color within a pixel is uniform. 3. The color palette is limited. My first guess is to use a GSL and find the parameters of the pixel grid by using a generic optimizer. The cost function could include the variance of color within a pixel, area of the pixels (larger pixels should be preferred), and a few other parameters. After identifying the parameters of the pixel grid, the colors of the pixels would be found by averaging and then clustering (to eliminate JPEG artifacts and defacements). Initially I considered using FFT methods, but this would never work for images such as 5, 6 or 7, and ideally I want to cover them as well. Another possibility is to use the Hough transform to find sharp lines in the image and then look for regularities in the lines. Does anyone have more ideas? Regards, Krzysztof

Release Training Exercise

Hi Developers, I'm going to try and be as verbose as possible about the procedure to upload your own release to inkscape.org, I need you to perform this task if you package any of our release packages because a) it's good practice and b) packages will be signed with your gpg key and it'd be an odd world where I could do that for you. :-) Releasing on inkscape.org: 1. Make sure you have a user account on inkscape.org - Go to https://inkscape.org and look in the top right of the page and note your logged in status, use the links provided in the drop down to log in or register an account. 2. Make sure that your account has a big enough quota - Go to https://inkscape.org/user/ and hover over the "Upload Quota" bar, you will only see 10MB if you are a normal user at this time. If you do not see a 1GB quota then you need to contact a website admin (me) to put you into the releases group with the larger quota. 3. Make sure you have a public gpg key recorded. - Go to https://inkscape.org/user/edit/ and fill in the right boxes, the GPG Public Key box is expecting a pasted public key (not private key!) and hit submit when done. 4. Make a folder for your releases in your 'InkSpace'. - Go to https://inkscape.org/gallery/new/ and fill in the name of the folder you want to use. This folder is only for your own organisation and won't be seen by users. 5. Upload your released file - Go to https://inkscape.org/user/ and drag your file to the new gallery folder created above. The upload may take some time but you should be able to see a progress bar as it uploads. (if you don't have javascript enabled, you can click on the folder and then click add and follow the manual form) 6. Enter all the details - Go into your folder and click on the newly uploaded item. It should have a red border indicating it's not yet published (if you used the drag+drop method) - Going into the editor section you should be able to fill in the title for the released file. - Paste in the release notes into the description. - Select 'Releases' from the category drop down. - Attach the sig file from your detached. - Select 'GPLv2' from the Licenses drop down. - Check 'Mirror' checkbox (if you have this) - Check 'Visible' checkbox Submit this form. 7. Verify and copy link - If everything's gone well you should now see your released file with a green padlock indicating the gpg signature has been verified against your account public key. - Download the release by clicking on the down-arrow icon. Confirm it's the file you intended. - Copy this download link. 8. Link from the downloads page. - For this step you will need CMS editor access or pass this task onto a website editor and/or translator. - Edit the downloads pages for the right OS and update with the right version, release and other details as you would want it to be presented to users. Add the copied link into the right place. - Save /and/ then hit the blue publish button. Congratulations, you've uploaded, released and published your release file. Help/advice needed with crash on bitmap paste/import (embed) on OS X >= 10.9

Current 0.91.x and trunk packages for OS X are affected by a rather critical issue on OS X 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite: * Pasting a bitmap image from the clipboard, or importing it via 'File > Import' with default import options (embed, resolution from file) crashes the application. [1] * Oddly, it seems that if the build has debug messages (to stdout) in the source code related to retrieving the image resolution from file, the crash no longer happens.[2] * First observed by testers of experimental osxmenu builds back in Nov 2013 (osxmenu is always quite up-to-date with trunk at any time). The debug messages had been committed in the osxmenu branch and I haven't seen new feedback about the same type of crashes with osxmenu builds. [3] * One tester of 0.91 pre-release and trunk snapshot builds reported OTOH that this type of crashes stopped after rebooting and switching to a different user (same system otherwise) - see comment 10 in bug 1398521 ([1]). * The crashes never reproduced for me on OS X 10.7.5 (build system for current available packages). How to proceed? This crash occurs in a very basic feature, and can get easily disruptive for Inkscape users on current OS X. Should we ship the upcoming stable release package with the debug messages applied as part of packaging (maintaining the diff in 'packaging/macosx')? There are a few more remaining changes that Josh and I are aware of, but nothing to cause undue delay. Hopefully the release will be finalized within the coming week. Please make sure any bugs you find are properly recorded in the bug tracker[1]. If you find particularly serious issues, please also make sure the issue (and any work-arounds) are detailed in our Release Notes[2], and hopefully we can tackle them in future point releases. Packagers, if you haven't already I recommend using this release as an opportunity to try out the new package upload system on the main website. Make sure to set your uploads as Mirrored, so we can start utilizing the new mirroring service. Please see Martin's tutorial posted on Dec 31st, and contact him directly if you need permissions or help uploading. One of the major remaining tasks we have is to write up release announcements. Tighten up command line options

The command line parameter list of Inkscape is quite long - 44 parameters to be precise. It splits similar functionality into multiple parameters while it doesn't offer all possible options. On the other side it offers some functions, which may be unnecessary or just too complex. So I suggest to restructure the command line functionality to separate the actual commands from their parameters. A good example for how that works is the git command line tool <http://www.git-scm.com/downloads>. So the commands would be open convert query version help The syntax for 'open' would be open <file path> The syntax for 'convert' would be convert -in=<input file name> -out=<output file name> [-out-type=<outupt file type>] [-edit=<edit function>] [-area=drawing|page|<object id>|<x0>:<y0>:<x1>:<y1>] [-id-only] [-width=<width>] [-height=<height>] [-dpi=<dpi>] [-vacuum-defs] [-background=<color>] [-text-to-path] [-margin] [-ignore-filters] [-version=<file type version>] covering all --export-* parameters and the -vacuum-defs parameter and where the different --export-<file type> parameters are combined in the optional -out-type parameter. -edit replaces --verb by allowing to apply different transformations and filters. (Are there other use cases for --verb than that?) If -out-type is not defined, the type will be inferred from the extension of the file name given in -out. Syntax for 'query' would be query x|y|width|height|all -in=<input file name> [-id=<object id>] covering all --query-* parameters. 'version' and 'help' wouldn't have any parameters and do what --version and --help currently do. --with-gui, --without-gui, --select, --export-use-hints (rather confusing than helping) and --verb-list (needs a different implementation, probably via 'help') and --usage (should be shown in the output of 'help') are removed as they are not needed anymore. --print, --export-area-snap, --export-latex and --shell are not listed, because I'm not sure about their usage. Hello Inkscape developers, I've been away from this list for a while - I designed the current Inkscape website a few years back, and it's been online for a few months now thanks to your hard work! I tried a couple of times to get the local web development environment up and running on my computer, but unfortunately life kept getting in the way. Back when I first did the designs, responsive web design was still relatively new - but now with a few more years experience I'd love to help make the website work responsively in my spare time. Would giving it a fresh lick of paint as well--to bring it in with current trends--be welcome? Hello all, I am hunting a bug where inkscape 0.91_pre3 win64 crashes before printing. I can reproduce the error, it does not happen on win32 and might be related to the devtools. I have not built on windows in a while. After upgrading to rev 13846 btool trundles along and then blows up with a ton of errors. There were so many it scrolled off the end of the terminal buffer. New version needed? If so, I really, really wish that btool would consult with build.xml to see if the minimum required version was present and emit a simple warning and stop. Thanks David! You are right, after closing the GUI, the command line reminded the last configuration set in the GUI. So, I can create now the emf files without exporting texts to paths using command line. I also agree with Sebastian, that an option for setting that directlly in the command line would be better and cleaner. Thanks for your help

There should be a command line parameter, which outputs detailed descriptions for each available parameter. For this purpose the --help parameter could be reused. E.g. calling inkscape --help --verb would list a verbose description of the --verb parameter. When the proposal for tightening up the command line parameters[1] is implemented, the call could look like this inkscape help query for getting a description of the 'query' command and like this inkscape help convert -edit for getting a description of the -edit parameter of the 'convert' command. Export SVG to EMF using command line

Hi! I have tested the export from svg to emf (in windows) using the GUI and I noticed a checkbox for exporting the texts as paths. This checkbox is by default checked, so as I didn't want that configuration I have unchecked it and the export worked like a charm. When I tried the same from command line by typing inkscape svgBasicChart.svg --export-emf=svgBasicChart.emf the export performed had the texts exported as paths, but I didn't find any option to avoid that from command line as I found in the GUI. how to write Inkscape extensions - guide needed

Hi Friends, I think I asked this before, but it was mixed up with another subject. And there seems to be a bit of a lull in the action, on the dev mailing list. So I thought it would be a good time to try again, when this is the only subject. In forums, probably 3 to 5 times in a year, people post a message asking either how to write an extension for Inkscape, or about some technical aspect of writing an extension. Or another version is - how to get an extension they wrote to be packed with Inkscape. Unfortunately, most of us don't have a clue about any of it, and there is no place to refer them. Now I'm working on fleshing out the Contribute page of the website, and it would be really nice to be able to provide a link to some kind of guide, or instructions, or article on the subject. It doesn't necessarily need to be a newbie's guide; so it wouldn't be teaching someone like me to write an extension. It would be addressed towards people who already have the needed skills and experience. So if anyone is interested, it would really be a great benefit to the Inkscape community, to have some information, in any kind of format, on how to write an Inkscape extension. It could be placed on the Inkscape wiki, or maybe even in your InkSpace (the gallery on the website) in Tutorials category. Thanks in advance, and thanks for listening. UnitTest Fix under Windows

Hi, So I'm not sure the process for submitting patches that aren't tied to a bug report, the Wiki ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaar#Working_with_pa…) didn't seem to mention where patches should be sent so I figured this might be the best place. Let me know if there's a better place to send these. I've attached a minor fix that corrects a unittest failure under Windows due to path separator differences.

Separate the Goddamn Sliders from the number input please!

Dear all, I don't know what made the new slider UI come through, but it absolutely sucks. Why in gods earth does the text input reside beneath the slider drag? Every time I want to set a blur I have to really be afraid to drag the friggin slider to 90+% and then wait and pray for Inkscape to recover from this mishap. The same for transparency. Can the sliders and the number input please be separated into their own objects rather than this highly frustrating BS object? Especially with blur it is not immediately obvious whether you have actually clicked the right object (text input) and then click again to try and select the number input while Inkscape goes haywire calculating 90+% blurs for every friggin click you make. Don't know how this behaves on 1024x768, but this is absolutely unworkable on highres screens. The disfunctionality of this solution is not worth the few pixels gained for the slider control. Article on Inkscape 0.91 -- deadline

Hi Inkscapers, As some of you may remember, I have a deadline to meet for my article on 0.91 in the prestigious Swiss PUBLISHER magazine, namely 12 January. I can write most of the article based on 0.91pre3 and the draft of the release notes. There are, however, a few questions left that I hope to receive answers from those in the know. 1) PUBLISHER 1/2015 will be printed by the end of January. Any chance to have 0.91 final out in the wild by then? 2) How "native" will the OS X release be this time? (This is very important to the readers of the magazine, since most of them are using Macs.) 3) 64-Bit versions: Please forgive my ignorance here, but the RN draft mentions 64-Bit support for Windows. Is there any other platform left for which 64-Bit versions are still unavailable? For those who are awaiting my essay on Inkscape for print/as a real AI alternative in print workflows (cough), my contacts in the industry are awaiting the 0.91 release, and their feedback will be based on the latter, not on 0.48. General state of OSX native?

Hi everybody, I am currently trying to get inkscape running with gtk3/OSX-native. After quite a bit of struggling, I got everything compiled and executable. When I run inkscape, however, I get tons of assertions, the window looks terrible, is just barely responsive and completely unusable. The info on the web is not very conclusive, so I wonder: * is inkscape OSX/native generally still in such a bad state or did I maybe not build it correctly? * is anyone working on this actively? * what is the state of inkscape/gtk3 in general? * What are the areas that require work to improve the situation? Perhaps, I could help out? Generally, I used to use inkscape quite heavily several years ago on Linux and absolutely loved it. Today, I am forced to use OSX for work and would sometimes love to have inkscape available for some quick drawing task. The usability of the inkscape/gtk2/XQuark on OSX, however, has always put me off using inkscape altogether (booting Linux for every occasional quick drawing is just not an option). Hello Inkscape Devs, I recently found an issue that I wanted to fix (not particularly related to this thread but it's: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/307833). As a first time dev/user of the website/wiki/build system, I wanted to point out some issues I ran into while building Inkscape that may not be obvious to those that constantly use it. I do want to point out that overall, I think building was relatively easy. I attempted to build under Windows 8.1 x64: 1. Bazaar seems to take awhile to download the sources, it was around 30 minutes for the 'bzr checkout lp:inkscape' command, this may be a misunderstanding of the wiki instructions and bzr though. Another 10-15 minutes was required for the devlibs64. 2. I initially tried to build a 32-bit target, however I think the compiler stated in the Wiki (GCC 4.6.1) may have been outdated for the project since there are new warnings that were turned on that I had to turn off in the build.xml for the compiler to stop complaining. 3. When building 32-bit I eventually was able to compile and link, however when copying the binaries the libgomp-1.dll appeared to be missing and the build failed - possibly due to the old compiler toolchain used from the Wiki instructions? For reference I was using: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows#Setti… 4. I noticed that the btool with the "-j" parallel job configuration didn't seem to spawn more than 1 compiler process. Only after looking at the source did I realized that I needed to build it with "-fopenmp". The "-fopenmp" option was the alternative build step for btool in the Wiki instructions, I think it should be instead the first option (and possibly move the other two alternatives into another section), wiki for reference: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows#Build… 5. I gave up on 32-bit target and tried the 64-bit build. This worked after I realized that the config.h was not being regenerated after I had previously built it for a 32-bit target, after deleting this file the build succeeded. To be more specific I think I was getting some invalid functions being called due to POPPLER_NEW_ERRORAPI not being defined correctly. A separate folder for all generated build files would make this more intuitive to me, but I understand it would likely be a bit of work. 6. I didn't seem to easily find where the output was being generated, initially I thought the inkscape.exe in the build folder was the final one, and of course attempting to run it causes dll dependency failures. Only after poking around did I realize the 'inkscape' subfolder was the final output folder. 7. I'm confused by the unittests, I think I've run across 2-3 different frameworks: a. A standalone test executable w/o a real framework located at: inkscape/src/io/streamtest.cpp b. Some CxxTest's located at: inkscape/src/svg/test-svg.cpp c. What I think are tests using GTest, I haven't found these in the source I pulled down, but the Jenkins job I think is using them (I found this after some mailing list searches): http://ec2-54-69-235-61.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com:8080/job/Inkscape_t… (This seems to question whether I have the correct sources or not since I can't find these test names anywhere) ***8. Linking is slow, on the order of minutes, so it makes development turn-around time on changes very long. This is actually a really big turnoff for developing. I think this hits inkscape.exe and inkview.exe. The linking is with the default link arguments, I did change compilation from -O2 to -O0 and added -g for debugging. This also ties back to #5, where if a separate build folder existed I could have one for debug builds and one for release/optimized and not have to clobber them each time. Maybe there's an Ant/btool property I'm missing? I'm not sure if 'ld' has incremental linking support, and if it would even help, similar to what Visual C++ has. Nice to haves: 9. I've heard some mention of cmake support ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CMake), but I don't know the status. In general if Visual Studio was supported under Windows it would make it much easier for debugging in the IDE. The recent community edition might make this option more attractive under Windows. 10. Bazaar seems to be used in relatively few projects, I know this would be a huge undertaking to switch and may not be worth the effort, but it might be a barrier for new contributors. It's something I think is minor, but it is yet another 'thing' I need to read up on/learn. Thanks. -- Mark

Roadmap brainstorming for 0.92 and forward

With 0.91 finally coming to a wrap soon, there are many different ideas on what to focus on next. One thing we all agree on is turning the next few releases out more rapidly, 0.92 especially. To do this, we'll need to carefully select which new features to undertake each release; the more discriminating we are, the less risk of delay we'll face in these. The less we undertake in parallel, the more quickly we can perfect what we do tackle. The more we collaborate together as a team, the better the end result will be. The Inkscape roadmap has proven instrumental in prioritizing and organizing our effort in the past. We can to use it again to help chart our course of development for the next several releases. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap I'd like to tackle this in three steps: First, brainstorm and gather ideas into a big list. Second, filter the list down to our most pressing needs. And third, prioritize that list across the next half-dozen releases. I figure we should strive for one primary objective each release, with one secondary and perhaps a few tertiary items. Of course, as we go we'll also have some surprises, early deliveries and the like; no need to turn those away. But the idea is to focus Inkscape on what we as a project want to achieve each release. extending inkview, background color as parameter

Hello, I use inkscape to create android icons / menu entries, action bar items etc. in different sizes. It is best to have input as SVG with transparent background and white foreground. To browse these SVGs i'd like to use inkview (inkscape has several disadvantages for this). But as inkview uses a white background i see white on white. I downloaded inkscape-0.48.5 and compiled it and began to hack the sources. I try to load the SVG, then change its background color and opacity (only in memory / RAM) and then display that changed SVG. As a first test i added in inkview.cpp in main(): printf("HERE\n"); Inkscape::XML::Node *nv = sp_repr_lookup_name (ss.doc->rroot, "sodipodi:namedview"); printf("nv is %p\n", nv); nv->setAttribute("pageopacity", "1.0"); nv->setAttribute("pagecolor", "#808000"); I do this quite at the end, directly before: sp_document_ensure_up_to_date (ss.doc); ss.view = sp_svg_view_widget_new (ss.doc); It did not lead to any change, i still see white-on-white. Basically i have some questions and it would be great if you could give me some hints on how to patch inkview. What i try is to change the loaded SVG document in memory and display that changed document. Is that a good approach or could it be done better / cleaner? It would be cool to view a grey grid in the background for transparent areas. Is there a way to achieve this? Best regards Torsten

Inkscape Website and Fastly CDN Service

Dear Inkscape Developers, In a happy Christmas time result, the issues we've been having with the very kind free CDN service from fastly.com have been ironed out and now I'm pleased to announce that inkscape.org is up and running with the new caching service effective imediatly. So what does this mean? Firstly, the configuration for our service has changed so django content[1] (which are NOT cached) will always redirect to https from http and will always redirect www.inkscape.org or the machine's ip-address to just inkscape.org. But this redirect does not apply to media, docs or static content. This content can be served up either http or https and from any combination of ip-address or domain. This was done to enable the caching services machines to read these files without issue. The website would always request content via https itself though. All images, javascript files and css files which are considered 'static content' are served via /static/ are still available directly but the site is configured to now request these via fastly caches. All uploaded images to the cms, resource files in your gallery, profile pictures and other 'media content' is also available directly and is also configured to request via fastly. This means that if you have uploaded an image with a name, deleted it, has the server clean away the old filename /and/ re-uploaded a new and different version within the one hour caching time, your images may not be updated. But this is such an unlikely and rare occasion that I mention it only for completeness. Uploaded version of inkscape binaries - Because the media content is now cached, downloading the inkscape pre-compiled binaries won't incur the very high penalties if they all went directly from the webserver. So we may now be able to host all our own downloads. This is good for getting up off sourceforge.net and be able to cope with the demand. I'm interested in suggestions on how we can stress-test the new system to make sure it will be able to cope with a new release if we decide to use it this way. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Auto marker color matching - The SVG 2 way.

Hi, I have implemented the SVG 2 'fill' and 'stroke' property values 'context-fill' and 'context-stroke' in trunk. These property values allow the automatic matching of marker fill to path stroke. They also allow cloned objects to reference the fill and stroke values from the <use> element. Only solid color fill and stroke values are handled at the moment. I added one marker that uses 'context-stroke' (as well as 'auto-start-reverse' which eliminates the need for separate arrow markers for the start and end of a path) to marker.svg (at the end) so people can try it out. At this stage, this should be viewed as an experimental implementation. The SVG WG hasn't finalized this part of the spec and there is work needed to provide an SVG 1.1 export mechanism for use until the browsers implement this. I wrote a blog as I was doing this work. Hello all, Let's start saying this. I really appreciate the idea to tackle the UI and make it into something more coherent, but... If there's going to be a whole team of people on the job, how possible would it be to create something like the Coreldraw UI that let's the user move tools and UI objects around, hide and show them from view and basically create the UI he would like. I felt this to be the greatest strength of Coreldraw and it was one of the reasons why my production time using Coreldraw was about 4 times faster than when using Illustrator. It enabled the noobs to have a basic UI and for me to lard my text editing widgets with all the functions I needed to do some decent Typography. For those not familiar with Coreldraw, download a trial version and use the tools -> customisation to get the idea. It could be quite a hassle to get everything set, but once you did, it made working a breeze. What would make a real difference though would be to unlike Coreldraw that loaded the whole shebang, load and offload functionality on demand. For Inkscape it would be a great way of organising the abundance of extensions as well if such UI widgets would be linked to loading or not loading of said extensions. Maybe by using an extension panel where you can load or unload extensions. They are really nice and all, but in general you will only use a few of those and it becomes a bit of a bloat to load them all. Likewise if It would to my idea also open up more space to try new and unstable functions if they'd be able to be loaded and unloaded dynamically. That way Inkscape can be build as a stable core with API to hang up new functionality and even allow for radical changes of UI objects depending on what functionality is being used. Thinking of animation, web design, print etc. Now I understand that that is all a bit far fetched at the current state of Inkscape, but creating a flexible UI might lay a base for realising such concepts. On the concept UI as I saw it, I would state that the importance of UI objects like the node editor would call for a top location as it is now. In the design phase of objects it is my most used tool and it might actually have some of the tools that are now in the dynamic bar moved to the toolbox (smooth node editing, cusped nodes etc.) to make access quicker. With the last chosen option made prevalent. Likewise, there are some tools grouped together now that make me switch a lot. For instance gradients and drop shadows are in the same group, whereas I often use both in succession to make a nice effect on text objects. Maybe a reconsideration as to how things are grouped is in order. They seem more chronological than functional to me. Cheers, Jelle

Hi inkscape devs, We are a group of UX, UI designers and front-end devs from Kaleidos <http://www.kaleidos.net/community/>, a company from Madrid, Spain. We are also designers and developers of the open source tool Taiga.io. We use inkscape in our everyday work and we love it, *so we would like to collaborate with our expertise to help make it even better.* Some months ago, we started to think on how we could improve usability and design in inkscape and other open source tools. We found out that inkscape improved in the last years, but still have some issues. We made some initial wireframes and designs, but nothing has been developed until now. In our company we enjoy a *free* week every six months to work and collaborate (or develop) in open source projects. This week is called ΠWEEK [*a.k.a. Personal innovation week] *(piweek.com). *This ΠWEEK we decided to focus on inkscape to do a first approach on how could look the inkscape we would love* in terms of look & feel as designers and front-end devs. Of course, we know that is hard work and it is not just designing it so we decided to write to the list *to get some advice on how to collaborate in the best way possible for designers and developers and hopefully fit in the inkscape development roadmap. * Even if this week we will probably be doing just a creative exercise it would be amazing if we could get some parts of this work and focus on it in a longer term to be part of the inkscape development roadmap for the future with your feedback and fitting in the inkscape needs and conditions. Need a button to lock the gradients

Hello. I recently installed Inkscape 0.91+devel, and I would like to make a suggestion. In version 0.48 often I had a problems with too many unused gradient in the list. At 0.91 you have created the opposite problem. In the new version if there is no object that uses the gradient, and hence there is no gradient. *I propose to****add a button****next to each****gradient****in the list,****clicking on which****you will****lock **this****gradient.* In this case, even if all the objects are removed, the gradient will be in the list and it can be applied to a new object.

Hi all, I've recently updated the Keys and mouse reference translations in the doc/ folder, but there are still things to be done on the documentation side: * Man pages in the root folder of the branch. * Tutorials, in share/tutorials/. Note that my documentation environment is still broken (unknown reason, it worked like a charm last time I used it in May on the same computer). Could someone (Masato? Kris?) try to generate the tutorial SVG files and confirm it works or not? Thanks. Also note that I saw nothing wrong in the Tracing-PixelArt tutorial while translating it to French. Win64 testing needed: high dpi

Hi all, I just added high-dpi awareness to the Win64 manifest. It makes all the icons pretty tiny on my system, but I think it's a step in the right direction. :) Could someone please test if this breaks Inkscape on a non-highdpi system? Note: only the 64-bit build is affected. Thanks, Johan

Hi All, I'm following up on Bryce's call for volunteers to help out with marketing. We need to have a release announcement prepared for Inkscape 0.91, and we're wanting to try having it prepared by someone who is not one of our developers this time. In case you're wondering why, it is one of the things taken away from Google's Mentor Summit this year. Simply, developers should not write things of that nature as they tend to be too critical of their own work. If you're interested in seeing what we've had in the past, I've linked what was posted to deviantART for 0.48 [1], 0.47 [2], 0.46 [3]. Please let us know if you want to have a go at it (or just respond with a draft). Worst case, if nobody takes it on, I have prepared a version of it following the same formula from the past couple releases. Units rehash

Hi, I have been living, breathing, and even dreaming units the past couple of weeks. My understanding of what Inkscape does and what it should do has evolved over the time period but now I think it has pretty much solidified. I thank all those that have given feedback. I've tried to put all this knowledge at one place: wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Units_In_Inkscape Conclusions: 1. There are only three attributes that matter: * The SVG root 'width' * The SVG root 'height' * The 'viewBox' Together they define a mapping of the real world to 'user units', in particular they define a scaling factor. Introducing an additional attribute 'svgUnit' is probably unwise. The document class should have a member function that returns the scale based on the above attributes. Note: the SVG spec allows non-uniform scaling and an offset which Inkscape handles without problem so a Geom::Affine should really be returned. 2. The user should be offered the possibility of changing these attributes in a simple way that makes sense to a non-expert: * Change page size: The 'width' and/or 'height' are changed to the new page size with the 'viewBox' changing to keep the same scaling factor. This is what Inkscape does now and has in the past. * Change page scale: The 'viewBox' is changed to set the a new scale factor (the page remains the same size). The GUI should offer the ability to pick a suitable scale factor (e.g. 1 mm == 1 'user unit') from a drop-down menu as well as allow the knowledgeable user to pick a custom scale by setting the 'viewBox' directly (via an expandable section that is normally hidden, like the as is done with the margin settings). Changing the scale factor will result in already existing objects (shapes, paths, text) changing size relative to the page. (Trying to keep the relative sizes constant is difficult and error prone except in the one possible case of wrapping all the content in a group and applying an inverse transform to the group.) With these transforms in mind, it is easy to see what should be done with the 90 dpi to 96 dpi transition. The main problem is for drawings of a specific size like A4 where the width and height are defined in pixels using 90 dpi. To 'fix' these files, change the width and height to use 'mm' or 'in' and then add an appropriate 'viewBox' to set the scale of the 'user unit' to 90 dpi. 3. Guides/Grids/3D Box Tool Guides, grids and the 3D box tool coordinates should be stored as 'user units'. This can be seen by the simple exercise of asking what one would expect to happen under the above transformations: Consider drawing a rectangle, duplicate it and then covert the duplicate to guides. As the page is resized and rescaled one expects the guides to stick to the rectangle's edges. Trunk already has code to define guides in terms of 'user units'. This code should be back-ported to 0.91. It should be relatively easy to handle the 3D box tool coordinates the same way. Grids are a bit more problematic because they allow (actually require) the use of unit identifiers (which are not allowed for guides and 3d box tool coordinates). If the unit identifier is not 'px' then there will be a problem between 0.91 (90dpi) and trunk (96dpi). We can offer an extension to make this conversion for grids and 3D box tool coordinates. Tav

is 48.5 changing?

If I refer to inkscape 48.5 in a book about cover design, am I OK with using the current version of 48.5 or are there still changes being made? Downloads Exception

Devs, Launchpad have allowed my request for a downlaods size exception to expire. (which I'm not happy about) But this does leave us with an important todo item, we must find a new home for our downloads before the 0.91 release because of the very unsafe nature that sourceforge has become. We do know these things: * Launchpad can only host our windows and source packages, Max OSX is too large. * Our website would not cope with our download traffic. * We have no mirrors, official or otherwise. Visual Align interaction proposal

Hi Martin, I love seeing this alignment video reemerge, I'm looking forward to easier alignment on the canvas. Thanks for pushing for good UI for this. I recently tried out the newest Paint.NET and found their manipulation UI interesting. When moving a mouse cursor out on the edge/margin of an object the courser icon changes and rotation is possible automatically. Could something like this be a consideration if you are wanting to keep the number of layers of interaction (three click-cycles) down? Perhaps moving to the margin or waving around the cursor of a selection of objects would force a hovering alignment tool to appear? Just putting this out there as if you need more ideas. (I haven't seen Fernando's attachment that was scrubbed for me in the mailing list) --Jared

0.91pre3 crash on OS X importing of graphics

I'm happy to see a dmg build for 0.91! Thanks for packaging this. So far I feel it is operating in parity of performance with the 0.48.5 X-11 app I've been using. Very glad to see the performance has not digressed. However I filed a bug because of the consistent crash I receive on two Yosemite Macs when attempting to import a raster file, or copy/paste from the desktop or GIMP. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1398521 I'd like to see this be fixed before release, so happy to do any more package testing if needed. --Jared
