[Recolor] Signals: Help needed

Hi all, Today, I fixed all the crashes and got the code working. The nodes are drag-able and nodes are added for every object added in the selection. The working is still buggy. Need to write modified signal call backs and rewire the signals to suit our needs. [CAD] Status

Hi, this week I changed the SPPoint selection to use Inkscape's normal selection mechanics instead of the control-point-selection.cpp. This has the advantage that selecting points and connectors at the same time is not quite as bad a hack as it would be otherwise. Doing this I introduced a new signal for selection/deselection in SPObject. I also changed the UI a lot to make it possible to reconnect connectors. SPPoints are now created by shift-clicking into the document while the selection is empty. If the selection is not empty, shift-click toggles the selection of the object under the cursor. Control-click should work as expected with groups. Connectors are terminated by clicking on the end point or somewhere in empty space (in which case a new SPPoint will be created on the clicked location). Sometimes stray points still appear because I have not yet found out how to delete SPPoints without crashing Inkscape. I am working on that. Connector deletion appears to work now. SPPoint deletion still has its issues. After deleting a SPPoint, Inkscape crashes with ominous memory corruption errors. I was unable to find the cause of that so far. I will push a commit later that allows easy reproduction of this. Sebastian

Just built branch lp988601 for the first time since Kris merged in changes from Trunk on 8/16. It seems to work fine, but there is a new message at the beginning: Unable to find: DialogScript ** (inkscape:14139): WARNING **: Unknown verb name: DialogScript Is that something old that has been partly removed, or is it something new that has been partly implemented? Hi all, I was able to spot the reason for the crashes. It was the type-casting that was causing a pointer nullification. With a few modifications I was able to fix that I got to render the nodes onto the wheel. Rethinking revision 12471

I recently became aware of revision 12471, and overall, I am afraid that the way in which it was implemented is detrimental to the readability and future maintenance of the Inkscape code. Presumably the underlying function it implements is to allow changes in the ratio PX/IN, and other units of measurement, and I have no issue with that goal. However, prior to 12471 all of the unit relationships were neatly set up in a set of defines in src/unit-constants.h which defined things like PX_PER_IN which were used elsewhere in the code. These evaluated to static values, and the new ones do not, but that does not negate the usefulness of the define. 12471 removes all of these defines and makes substitutions throughout the code where PX_PER_IN is replaced by Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "in", "px") My first criticism is that the new quantity is at first glance, indeterminate. Is it converting IN to PX or vice versa, what does "1" do? My second criticism is that eliminating the defines results in hundreds of substitutions in 12471 that are entirely unnecessary. All that was required was to change the defines in src/unit-constants.h, for instance from #define PX_PER_IN (PT_PER_IN / PT_PER_PX) to #define PX_PER_IN Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "in", "px") after which virtually no changes elsewhere in the code are required. By doing that, the existing and relatively clear code, like: p0[X] = (p0[X] * IN_PER_PX * dwDPI); need not become the obfuscated (to my mind) form: p0[X] = (p0[X] * Inkscape::Util::Quantity::convert(1, "px", "in") * dwDPI); Before 12471 PX_PER_IN already evaluated to a complex expression, and the whole point of the define was to let the compiler handle that mess and only present to the programmer a short easily understood term. 12471 is a step backwards in this regard. XDG Templates

I was reviewing the templates work by Jan Darowski and it got me thinking about the FreeDesktop.org XDG spec; it has a provision for a templates directory that we should be using instead of (or as well as) ~/.config/inkscape/ which is hidden from the user. Hi, Recap: I made a separate container for RecolorWheel. Initially there was an initialization error that crashed the application. As pointed out by Krzysztof, the std::map<std::string, RecolorWheelNode> had to be explicitly initialized which made the crash go away. The Recolor Dialog box renders perfectly. Invoking the DialogBox in Inkscape was causing a crash (before the explicit initialization of map) . Unfortunately, the application still crashes when I draw a new object on the canvas. Basically the crash happens when I select an object on the canvas. I was debugging the errors in gdb using g_message but here is the tricky part: When I run the inkscape.exe without gdb the application crashes only when the RecolorArtwork Dialog is active and an object on the canvas is selected. But, in gdb the application starts constantly giving the warning: " HEAP: Free heap block a90b8f6 modified at a90b8f6 after it was freed. " As a result the application doesn't get to the point where I can invoke RecolorArtwork and debug it. My latest branch can be found at: https://code.launchpad.net/~moduli16/inkscape/recolor . OpenMP support for Clang

I guess once this makes it into Clang, we'll be able to create fully featured (i.e. OpenMP support enabled) Inkscape builds with clang++. Fix for #771957: interleaved text and graphics in pdf+latex output

The current implementation of pdf+latex renders all text objects (LaTeX) above all graphical objects (PDF). I needed to export a figure with text interleaved with graphics---essentially bug #771957---so I implemented a simple fix for it. I'd like to see this (or, more likely, a modified version) merged for 0.49, but I'm not sure who maintains the pdf+latex renderer. Please let me know how to help. [Recolor] Progress Report

Hello all, First of all apologies for being out of touch for so long. There was a placement drive in my college (which took place in October every year but was pre-poned to August this year) and hence I was busy studying. I resumed work on the project from 17th August. In a previous discussion with Ted and Krzysztof , it was concluded that making an all-together separate ColorSelector class for RecolorWheel would be better and much more convenient to code. I was busy doing that this week. Now what remains is to hookup the signals for the recolor wheel. The class nesting of Paint-Selector, GimpWheel etc has me caught a bit right now. However, when viewed in Seamonkey, Firefox, or Opera it is sharp, with the colors just as expected from the original bitmap. (Opera is best for this, because it can zoom in further than the other two browsers.) What accounts for this? Solving bug #166371 - SAX parser

Hello After fixing the XXE vulnerability, Inkscape can no longer read SVGs that use entities in URLs. Notable cases include SVGs saved from Adobe Illustrator. There does not seem to be a way to replace these entities without reintroducing the XXE vulnerability. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/166371 I just wanted to point out that the best way to solve this would be to use libxml2's SAX parser or the newer XmlTextReader parser to directly construct the tree of Inkscape::XML::Node's, instead of postprocessing the XML tree obtained from the DOM-like parser. With this approach, we could intelligently substitute only string entities and ignore entities that point to URLs or external files. An additional bonus would be a reduction in memory use and load time, since the libxml2 DOM tree would not be created. http://www.xmlsoft.org/xmlreader.html Regards, Krzysztof

EMF import on Linux

Hello I know that there is working EMF import on Linux, and you can paste things from e.g. ChemDraw. Is it possible to make this code also work on Linux, using e.g. libemf, or would it require writing a completely new input filter? Regards, Krzysztof

I reallized that something (T-junction heuristic) I thought it was the home of the bug was a false assumption. The bug was in the customized (will be replaced by lib2geom) printing function. I fixed the problems with holes in libdepixelize algorithm. Now the only blocker before work on B-Splines optimization is fix the position of T-junction nodes. Hi, I have an SVG file which I want to burn using a laser cutter, and I was hoping to use inkscape to remove the overlapping line segments which are causing a problem with the laser cutter. (Where two lines in different shapes overlap, the line is cut once for each shape, leaving a heavier line). Hi, This week I mainly squashed some bugs. The current code [0] still requires -std=c++11 in the CXXFLAGS. Connector creation is working properly now, without stray points left over afterwards. Points can be selected in groups which can be transformed (scale, shear, rotate, translate etc.). Simple orthogonal routing and straight routing work. Libavoid routing works as far as there are no objects to be avoided (I did not yet test it with objects to be avoided). Multiple connectors can be connected to the same endpoint. Remaining problems are: * When moving a connector in selection mode ([F1]), sometimes a stray point appears somewhere inside the bounding box of the original connector (strange one!). * Connector aborting does not work yet. I deactivated these 10 lines for now. * There are some open UI questions: - How to disconnect connectors? - How to re-connect connectors to different endpoints? - How to edit SPPoints as parts of groups? How to move them into groups? - Probably some more which I forgot * Libavoid routing is still untested. * Sporadically, I manage to get the UI into some infinite recursion. Sebastian, Good to see you're making some progress squashing bugs. I've played around a little bit with the code. Here are a few observations: 1. Points (ports) need to be shown on the screen independent of whether or not they are attached to connectors. 2. Creating a connector should use a pre-existing point (port) if the cursor is near a point at the start or create a new point if it is not. The same thing should happen for the end point. 3. A distinction needs to be made between dragging a freely movable start/end point and moving a connector end from one port to another. 4. In your current code, drawing a simple connector creates a start point and an end point at the beginning of creating a connector. At the end, a new end point is created but doesn't seem to be actually used. 5. There needs to be one final redraw at the end of creating a connector. Since getting something out of Doug is like pulling teeth, I've put together a page on what I envision SVG 2 connectors to look like.[1] The key point (no pun intended) is that connection points can be defined using percentage values related to the objects they are part of or to the connector end points themselves. The one problem I have is how to specify a connection point inside a <symbol>. I hope to discuss this at the next SVG Working Group meeting. Your feedback (or anybody else's feedback) is welcome. Hi, This week, again I feel I spent way too much time in gdb I moved the code from using SPKnot for handles to ui/tool/ControlPoint. I did this not for dragging (SPKnot has built-in dragging) but for the selection feature of SelectableControlPoint s. Connector creation by dragging or clicking both ends works now, live preview works, saving connectors works. Remaining are a couple of segfaults: One when closing inkscape without saving just after a Connector has been created while the connector tool is still active, and one when I try to drag an endpoint of the connector. This one is actually quite tricky, I have not yet been able to track down its cause properly. Another issue is that when a Connector is created with two clicks (but *not* when it is created via dragging), I have a leftover SPPoint at its start. I think I know where this comes from, but I have not yet found out how to properly delete a SVG object in inkscape without segfaulting. And finally, though I can save SPPoints and SPConnectors just fine to SVG, I can't load them yet. I would appreciate some eyes on the connector creation code in SPConnector.cpp with respect to the SPPoint dragging segfaults. I am not very confident of my work in ref/unrefing things in the connector context. The code can be found at [0]. To compile it, add -std=c++11 to your CPPFLAGS. It still needs that for a little variadic template I wrote. I will change this to a bunch of non-variadic ones for pre-C++11 before integrating. Gtk+ 3 test-binaries now in PPA

Hi All, Daily builds of Inkscape with experimental support for Gtk+ 3 are now available in the trunk PPA. I've named the package "inkscape-trunk-gtk3". So... 1. We now get early warnings about build-failures with Gtk+ 3. However, please remember to do a local test build with Gtk+ 3 support before pushing any major GUI changes to trunk. 2. It's now easy to test the Gtk+ 3 version on Ubuntu without needing to manually build from source Note that there's a bug tag "gtk3" for tracking the (numerous) runtime errors [1]. Boolean ops (again!)

Hi devs, I'm looking at Boolean operations (particularly Difference ops) on real-world SVG files again, and I've come across another bug, which I've reported here for posterity: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1209281. This comes with a sample SVG file which might reproduce the bug. Note that I say "might" because it is reproduced on the current trunk on my x86 Ubuntu 12.04, but not on the latest Windows build I'm running (0.48.4). I aim to have a look into what's going on here and hopefully come up with a patch - I've looked through the livarot code in a bit of detail now, and I think I understand at a basic level how the various path-intersection algorithms are implemented (particularly wrt quantization of coordinates and the implications for the sweep-line method). Meanwhile, a couple of questions: 1) While I expect I'll be able to fix the current unstable behaviour (occasional copying of topmost path's coords into bottom-most path during difference operations, for too-small paths that "fall through" the quantization grid), the whole requirement for quantization in livarot is a bit unsatisfactory. Longer-term, it might be nice to switch to a path-intersection algorithm without the quantization restriction, and that deals better with degenerate cases - perhaps something like the CGAL 2D intersection methods ( http://www.cgal.org/Manual/beta/doc_html/cgal_manual/packages.html#part_VII… I believe this part of CGAL is GPL licensed, is this an issue? Thoughts? 2) I keep coming across code in Inkscape that could be improved with the RAII pattern (particularly, things like: { Thing *t = new Thing(); ... do stuff with t ... delete t; } When writing new code, I'd much prefer to use smart pointers, e.g. { std::unique_ptr<Thing> t(new Thing()); ... do stuff with t ... } Obviously things like std::unique_ptr and std::shared_ptr require (part of) C++11. I note that parts of inkscape use boost::shared_ptr - is use of boost the way to go in this case, to keep support for older (non-C++11) compilers? Thanks Eric

Basically, a couple of dead files were not removed from the POTFILES.in list. Staging website blueprints up

All the current webpages are now reflected in blueprints for the staging website: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape-web I've used the nomenclature of "+" to indicate child pages, and to include the parent page in the title. There are a number of blank pages still existing: *about+overview *about+screenshots (at least not much) *community *community+gallery (limited) *learn *contribute *contribute+contributor-stats *develop (not much more than descriptions and links to the child content) What stands out to be in this review is that _many of the parent pages are blank_. I also understand that this is the staging site which has not been completed. I would prefer we not simply fill a void by adding content, or simply add links to the content on the child pages. Rather, is there a strong reason for these parent pages to exist at all, beside simply adding a category for the necessary child pages? If there is a vision for these pages I would like to see that reflected in our blueprints. Otherwise I think we may see need to consider a revision of the menu structure to keep a simple site and not loose users in the multiplicity of pages. I would love to contribute more in filling content, if suggestions can be made within these blueprints or through the mailing list! Thanks. --Jared

Somewhere halfway, there is some error checking it seems, that sets size explicitly to some hardcoded default value of 12.0. But again this is never used in the method. Is it a bug? [CAD] Next steps, a trivia question and discussion of the semantics for what objects a connector should avoid

Hi, I'm moving on refactoring the connectors code. I just changed the toolbar a little bit so every connector type has its own button. During refactoring, two questions arised: 1. What does "Ege" as in "EgeAdjustmentAction" mean? 2. What semantics do we want concerning which objects are to be avoided by a connector? A little elaboration on the second question: Currently, Inkscape uses libavoid to route object-avoiding connectors. All object which should be avoided by the router are added an "inkscape:connector-avoid" attribute. This does not, e.g., allow an object to be avoided by certain connectors and ignored by others. I can currently see three obvious solutions to that problem: * Avoid objects based on group/layer membership. E.g. avoid any objects on the same top-level layer but ignore others. * Avoid objects based on a "tag". This is not unlike the current approach, but I would really use a class instead of an own attribute for this to be easily interoperable with other implementations of this, especially a potential javascript router as discussed with Doug Schepers from w3c, who is currently working on a SVG connectors spec. Personally, I favor the second solution since I think it is less hacky and more flexible. I think it would be a sane choice to have connectors avoid objects by default and to explicitely mark objects to be ignored while routing. If you wanted a connector ignoring any objects you could just use the non-libavoid routing types I am just adding. * Any combination of the above If you have any thoughts on this, please share them with me ;) I'm now moving on to implement (somewhat minimalistic) "points" as described in [0] so I can then head towards renovating connector-context.cpp. My latest commit to launchpad breaks in an assertion when drawing a connector since it needs these changes. The commit before that should work, though. These "points" will be placed whenever one places a connector's end, except if one places a connector's end on an existing "point". When drawing a connector, all visible points will be rendered as knots. This enables template-based diagram elements which are just are groups that contain a shape and one or more points for the connector to attach. I will remove any logic from connector-context responsible for handling anything but two endpoints (if you want to draw a connector with multiple "stops", just chain together multiple connectors) and remove the "snap connector end point to connector's intersection with destination shape outline"-logic since I do not think this is too useful. XMLCh ch = get(p); if (p != '{') { error("@page requires '{' before declarations"); } Shouldn't that be if (ch != '{') ? It happens a number of times in that function and looks like a bug to me. Hi, I just pushed some changes to launchpad that fix the GObject instantiation problem I had [0]. I am now explicitely initializing the members to 0. Next comes some cleanup integrating the feedback I received. The current code allows one to place SPPoints and SPConnectors in the document, the three major problems left are state handling in the ConnectorContext (dragging does not work yet), live preview (the "red curve" is not displayed/updated yet) and a missing/superfluous display->doc transform. memset on SPStyle

Hi all, I just came across this piece of code: memset(style, 0, sizeof(SPStyle)); That looks terrifying! SPStyle is a huge struct, containing member objects (sigc::connection) besides just simple integers and enums. CPPCheck complains with "Using 'memset' on struct that contains a virtual method.". I can't find any virtual methods in SPStyle, but still it looks like a bad bug. I have disabled that line of code, and added extra re-init lines in r12452. Please have a look and confirm the fix. [Tracing] Library integration/API design

So, I reached a point where I know how the next steps can be implemented, but, differently from before, the next steps on libdepixelize can have a big impact on how it will be integrated on Inkscape. I decided it would be a good thing to discuss this matter with other developers. Currently it's possible to represent simple paths on libdepixelize (see this), but to implement the full Kopf-Lischinski algorithm, I'll need to have paths with "holes" and I'll need to use complex path representations with enough expressive power to communicate things like "point start in A, then do a Bézier to C...". I don't want to create a new interface to represent paths, because this interface already exists and it's called SVG. Dear All, I have enabled automatic testing (make check) in the trunk PPA, so we'll now have an early warning system for runtime errors. Please can I draw your attention to the known test failures [1]: #1202271 cxxtest: preferences-test.h fails #1208002 cxxtest: svg-length-test.h fails (in progress) #1208005 cxxtest: svg-path-geom-test.h fails #1208013 cxxtest: curve-test.h fails #1207502 cxxtest: svg-affine-test.h fails At the moment, PPA builds will (correctly) fail if the extension tests fail, but will still succeed in the case of errors in Inkscape itself until we fix *all* of the broken tests above. It therefore makes sense to try to fix all of these in time for Inkscape 0.49 so that we have a correctly functioning unit test system. 2 questions: Walk through all nodes and the two "different trees" SPObject/agnostic XML

I'm trying to walk through a complete document and get all nodes of a specific type, in this case <metadata> to populate the new metadata GUI. My best bet now is to get the current active SPDocument and start to iterate from the root node, depth-first. I've found the sp_repr_lookup_name in "src/xml/repr.h" which do exactly that but stops at the first hit so I would have to wrap it somehow and run it multiple times. If I've understood this correctly it will work on the agnostic XML backbone and not with SPObjects which I should be using but then again RDF implementation doesn't use SPObject in its current state. Am I on the right track or totally lost? (within repr-util.cpp it seems like you can iterate through a XML::Node's all children with the help of firstChild() and next(), perhaps better than using the c facade function, but will it work with RDF nodes?) So to my second part, somewhat related, In sp-object.h a comment says "[...] SPObject layer is bound to the SPRepr layer, closely following the SPRepr mutations via callbacks." We have the typed object layer with SPObjects and the agnostic XML layer with SPRepr. The confusion for me now is concerning variable naming, I think, throughout Inkscape codebase both "repr" and "node" are used as variable names for XML::Node objects. Is SPRepr the old "name" for XML::Node? If yes, this would mean that everything below Inkscape::XML do work on the the agnostic XML backbone layer and not the SPObjects, have I understood this correctly? Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Member initialization is already done before the constructor is even entered, and member destruction happens automatically after the destructor returns. I'm fairly sure this will lead to problems at runtime. 2. A lot of the constructor code should be changed to member initializers. See e.g. the constructor of SPItem. 3. Class names such as CSomething are reminiscent of MFC. The prefixes should be removed and the classes put in namespace Inkscape::SVG (since they represent objects in the SVG). 4. "#pragma once" is not used in existing Inkscape code. For consistency you should use standard include guards. 5. singleton.h should be merged into sp-factory.h. Singletons should be avoided where possible, so a separate singleton header is not a good idea. Boost doesn't have a singleton header for the same reason. 6. The virtual methods should be made protected, since they are not intended for use outside of SP node implementations. Since the initialization rework I proposed would address points 1 and 2, it seems that this part of the work is actually not done. What do others think? Hello all, Because I'd been stuck on the second goal for so long, I decided to get on to write the GUI subsytem, which was actually my third and final task for the midterm evaluation. I have written the paint_recolor_nodes( ) function successfully. Here is a screenshot: [image: Inline image 1] The black outlined, white colored (with color inside) are the intended nodes that will function in the final render. Now I'll move onto writing the events that trigger repainting and node dragging. I cannot work on these events making actual changes till the brick-wall issues are resolved. Coding workflow and reading practices

Hi Johan, In the thread on GObject instantiation you happened to raise an interesting issue that probably warrants some good discussion. You had mentioned that adding more to the headers "Saves some time wading through lengthy .cpp files only to find an almost empty function". Do you think you can expand a little on your use case where this type of practice is an issue? That is, can you give a quick description of some of the steps you would be going through when this problem pops up? I know that different people have different learning and processing styles. (As an extreme example I've even worked with someone whose workflow was impacted by a change in Emacs that limited the number of open windows to only a couple hundred.) It would be good to be sure that we try to get things structured well for easier maintenance, etc. Thanks.

GObject object instantiation problem

Hi, I'm currently having some problems allocating GObjects. I just added a class called SPPoint [0]. When I try to instantiate an object of that type (whether through SPObject/sp_object_child_added or manually from GDB using g_object_new does not matter), g_object_new returns an GObject* that contains a zero class: {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x0}, ref_count = 0, qdata = 0x0} (this is not good as it breaks everything else about G_OBJECT). I was able to track down the problem to g_type_create_instance returning that when passed the new SPPoint type: (gdb) print sp_object_get_type() $13 = 20593552 (gdb) print sp_point_get_type() $14 = 20619024 (gdb) print *((GObject*)g_type_create_instance(sp_point_get_type())) $20 = {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x0}, ref_count = 0, qdata = 0x0} (gdb) print *((GObject*)g_type_create_instance(sp_object_get_type())) $21 = {g_type_instance = {g_class = 0x16ec560}, ref_count = 1, qdata = 0x0} I'm currently building a glib with debugging symbols to further track down this problem. If anybody here has an idea about what might be the cause of this problem, your suggestions will likely be tremendously useful since I'm already pondering over this for a few hours. [Units] Completion of Phase One

I have now eliminated "unit-constants.h", removing the last of the duplicate general unit code. The one remaining section of somewhat duplicate unit code is the "SVGLength" class, but that is specific to the SVG specification, not general units. I plan on leaving it alone for now but may make it a child class of "Util::Unit" during phase two. I have submitted a merge proposal for my branch [1]. I don't seem to get what you mean by "values" and "building blocks"? Is it necessary to create a class just holding a key and a value? Wouldn't a std::map suffice? 1) The SPObject class exposes a method "connectModified" which you can use to register a sigc::slot with the modification signal. This should work I hope. Or look at "src/ui/dialog/document-metadata.cpp". Inside this file there's a method called "on_repr_attr_changed": /** * Called when XML node attribute changed; updates dialog widgets. */ I don't know why this does not work currently. 2) Sorry? When the xml tree is modified, the corresponding SPObject is automatically informed, I don't think you have to do anything there yourself. When you want to update the xml node after you made a change to an SPObject, just call the modified SPObject's updateRepr method. 3) Yes, I think so. The SPObject will stay, not as a struct but as a real class ;) . For the moment you'll have to get into creating a derived GObject "class". This shouldn't matter for understanding, though, I just converted the tree to "real" c++ classes. SPObject is the base class for all tree nodes. As you can see in the first pdf, every svg element has got one counterpart of the right class in the object tree. Whenever a change is made to an xml node, it informs the tree node belonging to him by calling for example onUpdate(). The tree node then updates its internal state. Whenever possible, one should work on the tree nodes and leave the xml nodes alone. You'll find lots of information on this in the inkscape wiki, e. g. "Changes in the XML tree are automatically propagated to the object tree via observers, but not the other way around-a function called updateRepr() must be explicitly called." As the rdf information is not a drawable object (-> SPItem subclasses), it should probably derive directly from SPObject. Maybe you could then add it as a member to SPMetadata. I'm not quite sure how to handle that best either. We should wait for some more opinions. or just try it out :) . [CAD] Status report

Hi, the last few days I dug myself into connector-context.cpp, making that thing compatible with the routing changes I did last week. So far, this has proven quite a task and I am not done yet. A snapshot of the current changes (not yet compiling since I'm midways in it) can be found on launchpad[0]. The main missing parts (apart from actually connecting everything back together after ripping it apart) are fitting g_signal and sigc++ together and getting all the rainbow-colored curves right. [Recolor] Fetching number of objects selected

Handling missing point attribute in input SVG

Hello, Since it is my first post here, I would like to introduce myself. I'm CS student interested in FLOSS software and C++ development. I would like to contribute to Inkscape to raise my programming skills and do something good this year. I've begun by solving bug #1202753. For polygon elements in input file, that have empty or no "points" attribute SPShape::curve field is NULL. According to comment in sp-polygon.cpp:125 this should not be the case. When points="", sp_polygon_set does not initialize SPShape::curve. Comment in sp-polygon.cpp:169 refers to W3C note: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/implnote.html#ErrorProcessing. RDF nodes

Hi there, I have not been in for quite a while, but now I've got some time to spend on inkscape again! :) I just looked at this RDF thing and I'm wondering whether it should rather derive from SPObject than being so "separated"? I mean, one document has one metadata node and that should have exactly one rdf node in it, shouldn't it? Currently, RDF nodes do not have any counterpart in the object tree... Btw, do you plan on merging the gsoc results before 0.49? Regards, Markus

Making a Windows binary

Dear Inkscape developers, I am working on a variant of Inkscape (well, "fork" but with no hostile intent towards such a great project) and while it runs and compiles just file on my Linux box, I haven't managed to make a Windows binary. I tried the native build on Win32 route but `pygobject` is needed (`pygobject.h not found`) for this particular variant. Basically, I think if I just add `pygobject` to the `devlibs`, everything will work out fine but I have no idea how to do this and I was hoping to get a quick answer from one of you since you already know your way around the codebase. If its something easy, feel free to skip the rest of this message which contains details of what I tried. I don't know the first thing about adding the needed paths for cross-compiling with `i586-mingw32msvc-g++` so I failed pretty quickly there (setting environment variables such as CXX worked fine but `make` then failed to find `libpng`). So I tried building on a (shared) Windows machine using MinGW. `buildtool.cpp` compiled fine (with a warning) and running it started the build process with no apparent problem (it didn't recognize the -j flag though) until it didn't find `pygobject.h`, which is obviously missing. I then installed Python and pygobject (using the PyGTK all in one bundle) but that didn't help (pygobject.h is missing), probably because those are runtime libraries with no header files. The entire goal of making such a build is so that I can get some testers. So I'm also happy to hear other options. (I haven't tried a Mac build yet since I don't have access to such a machine to test the output binary.) Thanks for your time (both in making Inkscape what it is and maybe answering my question).

I think I'm hearing it be helpful if blueprints were created of the staging webpages, to use as scratchpads and landing sites for arrangement of content goals. I have made blueprints before, but if this would be helpful I'm happy to work on it. I'm asking for clarification because I don't want to clutter up launchpad with posts that are not toward the vision that's desired. --Jared

[Recolor] Moving on: Class Hierarchy

Hello, I started off with the final coding sub-phase for the mid-term yesterday. The whole ColorSelector class and the ColorWheelSelector class and their inheritance is confusing me. I need to get the ColorWheelSelector to access the GimpColorWheel member _wheel of ColorWheelSelector. How do I get hold of that object ? Removal of assumed dead code, tips and trix, workflow and testing(?)

While working on the metadata enhancements I've realised that there are quite a few lines of dead code. Even the entire file of document-metadata.cpp|h seems to be left overs from 0.48 when Document Metadata was in its own window (now within document properties). With limited testing going on (or perhaps just me missing out on it?) what is the best practice to remove as much dead code as possible and nothing more without breaking stuff? ### On a more specific problem I've just tested to remove src/ui/dialog/document-metadata.cpp|h from Makefile_insert and done a clean build though I ended up with a compilation error that I've a hard time understanding. First of all I think that the DocumentMetadata is instantiated somewhere though the error message points to panel-dialog.h which is a template and to "/panel/home-dialog.h" which is a file I don't think exists in the source. Any help is appreciated. Last lines from "make" error attached in text file. Paned vs (H|V)Paned and adding it to metadata-properties, namespace error?

So working on implementing my mockup sent to the mailing list concerning more advanced metadata editing into Inkscape now. Though I've hit an error I can't understand, any help is appreciated. ### My problem The problem I have is that I can add new VBox and ScrolledWindow without problem to document-properties.cpp|h and compile it. When I try to add Gtk::Paned or Gtk::HPaned I get the following errors. error: ‘Paned’ in namespace ‘Gtk’ does not name a type error: ‘HPaned’ in namespace ‘Gtk’ does not name a type I've tried to add it in a mockup outside of Inkscape and it works. Any ideas what this could be caused by? ### Another question As a side note I'm trying to add a paned window to the document properties notebook which has each page built up by tables/grids. Inkscape Website problems and how to help

Hi ! Today I noticed a problem with the new staging.inkscape.org page. In the "overview" tab the about and download buttons doesn't fit in the same row. I checked it using Firefox 22 and Chromium 28.0.1500.52 both in Ubuntu Studio with the same problem. Looking a little bit closer I noticed there is a 100px margin in the css class : #front-banner-overview.buttons-right #front-banner-read-more { margin-left: 100px; } Reducing that margin to 90px ( for instance, and to let some space between the buttons ) should solve the problem. There is another problem with the news pages. It seems to complain about an error with Django 1.5 but no clue about how Django works at all... Also noticed a problem with the drop-down language menu. If you don't move the mouse fast enough the drop-down closes before reaching it. The problem seems to be the top margin in the drop menu. In that space the mouse is not being detected as being in the drop-menu element. I would solve it adding a height fixed empty div inside the drop-menu with white background so it looks the same but not sure if a good solution. I would like to help solving this problems. Design Approach for Directory-Level Extensions?

Hi, I'm seeking advice related to Inkscape Bug #1069248: Feature Request: Add 'Export to hOCR' in Save Dialog https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1069248 I've published a draft implementation of the extension (see comments) and am currently working on the next step, which is to say the ability to create multi-page PDFs from directories of hOCR html files and corresponding images. I have a standalone, draft version of this script based loosely on HocrConverter ( github.com/jbrinley/HocrConverter ); it's functionality I'd like to develop into a second Inkscape extension, if possible. So, two questions: 1) what steps are necessary to include the 'Export as hOCR' extension in Inkscape upstream? and 2) the 'next step' extension ("Create Multi-Page PDF from hOCR HTML Files" or similar): what would be the best way to integrate this into Inkscape? Most (all?) Inkscape exports/effects/operations operate on single documents, so it's a little different in scope. == An alternative method to create text-searchable PDFs within Inkscape is to open an image, create text boxes with opacity >= 0.4% (tested with Evince 3.4.0), then export as PDF using the current extension of the same name. Downsides to this approach are that the text is slightly visible and the loss of structured metadata (i.e., hOCR) which is extensible to other applications (e.g., DjVu, moz-hocr-editor) Sincerely, George

Unit testing

Hi guys, First off, I was wondering how many people out there have been running the unit tests along with builds. Secondly, the system we have now probably is in need of serious updating. Some of the test cases themselves aren't passing correctly, but the framework is also outdated. So does anyone have preferences in this area? Is there some framework we should consider other than Boost Test and Google Test. Or has it not been an issue for others and I should just go ahead and update to whatever keeps things working? Only GimpWheel Mode

In my attempts to operate in the mode when the wheel is being used: I made the following changes (the diff file) - added a 'gboolean _isWheel' to struct ColorSelector - added a function (public) void set_isWheel {_isWheel = TRUE } - added a function (public) gboolean get_isWheel { return _isWheel; } -added a function to paint-selector.cpp 'gboolean isWheel' which returns the _isWheel attribute of its selector. Unfortunately, the value does not stick to TRUE. QuesA: Is this approach wrong ? Is there any intrinsic method by which I can get the information that the Wheel is active ? [Recolor] Good News

Hello all, I have successfully implemented the code that enables dragging of the recolor nodes. Right now, any node you drag shall change the color of the entire selection. Another development: I successfully can edit the color from the Desktop. Hello all, I am unable to narrow down to the mode when the Wheel is active. (in the code) I have been digging through: sp-color-notebook.h/cpp sp-color-selector.h/cpp sp-color-wheel-selector.h/cpp sp-color-scales.h/cpp I also tried using the SP_IS_COLOR_WHEEL_SELECTOR(o) but I couldn't figure out how to design the final function call that takes as the argument, the list of selected objects when the wheel is actively being used (in the sp-color-notebook) and then changes the colors of the individual objects. This is what is holding me back: Where to put the function ? As a member of ColorSelector ? ColorWheelSelector ? or PaintSelector ? 'path' attribute in mesh branch

Hi Tav et al., I noticed that the 'path' attribute was added for meshes in r11406 [1] but it was not listed as being "supported" in attributes.test.h. I wanted to check whether it's safe for me to just change its status to "supported" in the test because it's part of an experimental feature. If we don't do this, the unit test faiils. One possible issue is that the 'path' attribute is listed as only applying to the 'animateMotion' element, while meshes aren't part of the formal SVG standard [2]. Am I reading too much into the meaning of "supported" here? Have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely?! Regression in rev. 12399

Hi Alvin, After updating to the latest Inkscape trunk, I've come across a regression - boolean operations on paths no longer work correctly. It appears that revision 12399 (Shape calculations - do not quantize the coordinates) is the culprit. I believe this commit attempts to fix the issue of path coordinates being rounded (and hence losing precision) - however, it looks like the boolean operation algorithms rely on this rounding to work correctly, and now fail with certain path data. I've attached an example of an SVG file with two paths. If you "select all" and then perform a "Path/Difference" operation, it produces the expected result in 12398. If you perform these steps in 12399, both paths disappear. (If the attached file gets stripped out for some reason, it's also available at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3442233/boolean_regression.svg). I can understand how this error went unnoticed in simple tests - I tried drawing a couple of rects and doing a "difference" operation and it worked fine. Must be dependent on the exact shape of the path, perhaps my example file contains coordinates that give the difference algorithm some headaches due to floating-point precision issues (numbers being squared etc) that the coordinate rounding hides. I guess the best option for now would be for someone to back out revision 12399. Alvin, hopefully my example SVG will allow you to find the source of the bug! Best, Eric

Inkscape logo on the wiki

The wiki still has the extremely old and ugly logo instead of the Tango one. (The new one is attached.) Does anyone know who has or can give access to the Mediawiki server, so that the logo may be finally changed? This is not a trivial thing, as I'm sure the old ugly logo is still being downloaded from the wiki and reused by third parties as our "official" visual identification. Regards, Krzysztof

[Templates] translation of xml data

Hi! I'd like to ask, if any one of you have any ideas how should be some additional data inside .svg files kept to enable easy translation? I mean info about the template (name, description etc) and probably, later on, some field names for procedural templates. Is there any recommended mechanism for translation of this data or should I think of something new? Another related question: is adding template info into metadata element ok or should I add a new one? I'm asking these things because it's pretty important to set it now correctly as later on it will be difficult to change anything. Regards, Jan Darowski

Move Align to Selection

I've been looking at the align-and-distribute code and want to clear it up for use with my new functionality. My idea is to move the core function into selection like this: Selection::align(Geom::OptRect bbox, AlignSide align, bool as_group); That way align-and-distribute can specify the bbox from all it's options and other functions can align selections. It should reduce repetition and allow my code to call more directly into the effective code without navigating the ui specific code. I'd like your thoughts before I spend some time on this refactor. It might also be worth moving distribute too, I have some great UI ideas for how to do distribute with knot handles too. Best Regards, Martin Owens

[Metadata GUI] Discussion about improvements

As some of you know I'm working on improving attribution and license features in Inkscape. I've the basic functionality for the backend (modifications in the XML structure) done and have focused on learning Gtkmm the last week. I wanted to show a mockup with Gtk but I was not able to finish it today so I made a drawing of how I want it to be so the discussion can get started. Any suggestions are welcome. ### Current functionality Metadata GUI consist of two "pages" in the document properties tab/notebook view, "Metadata" and "License". ### Limitations Only one entry can be modified from the GUI. With addition of extra metadata elements as child elements for different SVG-elements there must be a way to modify multiple metadata tags. ### Goals Main goal is to give the user an overview of all the metadata included in the document open i Inkscape. ### Discussion In the attached image I've the basic structure on how I envision this GUI could look like. To the left a list view of all metadata elements available, similiar to the XML editor. The right pane include all the settings [1]. The right pane has at the top a preview "image" of the part affected with the current license/attribution information. So in the image I have made a collage of a "car" and a "sun". In the image I've selected the metadata element for the car so only the car is visible in this preview image. This makes it easier for the user to understand which part of an image is affected by the current attribution and license information. As this GUI is very heavy on forms it's hard to copy and paste the information between different objects and could be very cumbersome. Therefore I have added the two options "Copy" and "Append/Paste". This would copy the entire object's metadata to the clipboard and be available to append/paste in another object (instead of copy-pasting ~15 different fields one at a time). License information can be moved to a dropdown/EntryCompletion option instead of a separate notebook tab. (License would also need one Entry field for the URI that is not in the image). Any comments, ideas or thoughts about this are appreciated. [1] In the image I've only drawn "title" and "Creator" but the real thing would include all options available now from the "Metadata" and "License" tabs. Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Regarding Correct Way to get/set SPObject Style Properties

Hello , This is regarding using the functions in style.h to change the fill color of the object currently selected on canvas. I found snippets like these in the code: getRepr()->setAttribute(key, NULL, false); On following these lines, I tried setting a red color to all selected objects using getRepr()->setAttribute("style-fill", "#FF0000"); Again nothing works. Could you please gimme a reference to how to use these functions in the right way ? What should be the way if I need to change a specific property of the style of the object ? An example would really be very helpful. (SVG Text Wrapping via CSS Proposal) http://schepers.cc/its-a-wrap Will this be a positive change for how Inkscape handles wrapped text? I can never keep straight the flowed or unflowed property. Request for Animation Editor development [with funding]

Hello, I'm Rei Kagetsuki from Genshin Souzou K.K. We'd really like to see an animation editor in inkscape with proper SMIL-embedded SVG output.
