possible save dialog bugs on Windows

I'm only seeing it on a single machine at work, but please take the time to see if you can reproduce it. perhaps it's just that one machine. I waited for 48.1 just to be sure it's not already solved but it seems like I still have this problem: When I create a new file and then attempt to save it, I have to explicitly add the "svg" extension. If I don't, the file is saved without an extension. Another issue I see on all both home and office machines: When I do a "Save As...", the save dialog opens with the file name field empty, when in most other applicatios it contains the current file name. Both issues are on Windows, I haven't tested on my Linux partition yet.

Gimp, Scribus, Inkscape and our sK1 already faced with this problem. CorelDRAW has passed this milestone in ver.10 I think you remember that we have presented Cairo-based rendering in sK1 on LGM2007 and since that time we have a lot of experience in this issue (whereas "cairofication" for Inkscape is upcoming feature). Using this experience I would say that "cairofication" doesn't resolve all Inkscape rendering problems because Cairo (at least current stable version) is not fast. Concerning our project we have decided reimplementing sK1 and UniConvertor from scratch because the further development of just stuck in the architectural issues. The site referenced, http://www.dot-dot-dot.nl in the subject page, http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DotDotDot looks like a parked domain from where I sit. The Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot_Dot_Dot_(magazine) points to http://www.dot-dot-dot.us which looks more like something, but the site doesn't display well in Internet Explorer (Intentional?) and doesn't have much functionality in Firefox. Hello, here's an update on the website. We have made some nice progress and it is defiantly coming along. It's going to be launched in phases. Phase #1 will be the main site with all the content and Phase 2 will consist of various things for the user allowing them to be able to post their own tutorials and plugins etc. However in order to do that we need help! We need the following: 1. content writers to go through the site and improve on the existing write ups. 1. Additional old news needs to be ported over. We ported over all of 2010 and 2011 but we need all news ported over 2. --query-all and hidden objects

Hi guys, When a group's children are all hidden (style="display:none"), --query-all command line parameter does not list this group's geometry. All of its children are listed. But not the parent. Another observation is that if one of the children is visible, then the parent's geometry is listed. Is there a specific reason for this feature? Or is it a bug? Thanks! -- -- V. Tango Pasodoble Icons updated for Inkscape 0.48.1

Hello again! This evening I have been working hard to update the Tango Pasodoble icon theme for Inkscape. The original theme have no icons for the new tools and options and some icons has changed his name. Yo could see a screenshot of the result here: http://www.jesusda.com/files/inkscape-tango-theme/tango_icons_new_0.48.1_v0… You could download the icons.svg file here http://www.jesusda.com/files/inkscape-tango-theme/tango_icons_new_0.48.1_v0… This SVG file could have some bugs, cause it is *SO PAINFUL* to mantain because nobody has updated the icon names and nobody adds the new icons to this file. In the future I would appreciate so much you notify me (sending an e-mail to the mailing list, for example) any change in the icons.svg main file (change of names, new icons, etc.) because it is very difficult to compare icons.svg and tango.svg icon by icon, name by name. The easy way to use the Tango Pasodoble Icons is downloading this file: http://www.jesusda.com/files/inkscape-tango-theme/tango_icons_new_0.48.1_v0… There are two folders: 16 and 24. You must copy the icons inside the 16 folder and paste then into your desktop icon theme ACTIONS folder for 16px icons (do the same for 24). Inkscape will load the icons from your desktop icon theme. ;) This option is only for Linux users. I know the icon topic was disscussed time ago, but I think we must do anithing about this: the default icon theme is not so pretty. It does not brings users the hi-quality appearance Inkscape has inside. I know is so difficult to decide and change the icons. I know the tango pasodoble icon theme could be better, but we has no other options. It is great that Inkscape could load the icon from our desktop icon theme, but what abou Mac and Windows users? It will be a nice idea to allow users select the theme via preferences or simply use the tango icon theme as a default one. I don't think you're missing that much, I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like a numerical problem somewhere. Specifically, for some reason Inkscape seems to convert a perfectly straight line segment into a curved segment when outsetting (even if you explicitly convert to a straight line segment first, so that there is no chance that it's almost straight or anything), that seems a bit odd. On my installation (0.48) it seems like it's mostly just the left tooth(?) at the top, although similar effects play up when insetting. Interestingly dynamic offset seems to do better, but it also clearly gives a different result (it rounds cusp corners). But if that's okay for you that might be a way out. In any case, you might want to file a bug report. To do so, please go to: http://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ and click on "Report a bug" (it's on the right). Partial clip-rule implementation

I don't know what the standard way to submit patches is, but I've attached a patch that implements loading, saving, and computing of the clip-rule property. I'm playing with getting it to work in the cairo renderer. It's a bit of a pain for two reasons. First, the existing fill-rule implementation for clip paths is not just incorrect (fill-rule shouldn't affect clip paths) but is also very buggy. Second, I don't know how to ask cairo to generate a clipping region that is the union of two paths unless both paths use the nonzero rule. That being said, I have a gross hack that at least gets multiple nonzero paths or a single evenodd path right. I'll make it less ugly before I mail it in. I understand approximately nothing about the nr renderer (or whatever the code that I assume renders the editing view is), so I've made no progress on honoring clip-rule in the edit view. What should I do from here? (Note: I'm not really inclined to try to invent a sensible UI for clip-rule. I mainly want to be able to edit my own figures that need clip-rule=evenodd. --Andy

printing - rendering bitmaps

Hello everybody, I hope folks will apologize me asking for simpe end-user advice: When calling the "printing" dialog, there is a tab "rendering". There I can select "vector" or "bitmap" and set the resolution for the bitmap. As I want to print a self-made map with a scan in the background, the "bitmap" option seems reasonalble to me. But lowering the resolution doesnt make any difference, files are as big as they are when I leave the "rendering" tab set to "vector". Is that a bug - or is my assumtion wrong, that this tab should have an influence to the resolution of embedded bitmaps? (Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, inkscape 0.48 X11) Thanks and greetings, Wolf

Hi Guys, (I apologise if I sent this to the wrong list and if so, if you could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful :] ) My name is Andrew and I have been using Inkscape for quite a while and have always found it fantastic! One thing I have found though, is that while some parts of Inkscape are brilliantly designed, some legacy parts you use a new lick of paint and a polish :) One such part is the part I use most, the Fill and Stroke Dialog. The code is stand-alone (although the aem stuff has been more or less coded with Inkscape in mind) and does not accept file based definitions, the images are hard coded (although relatively easy to alter, I just didn't get around to writing a parser). For integration with Inkscape there are still quite a few things missing, like syntax :) Also, I don't think the method I developed is mature enough to put in Inkscape as is. In my opinion the quickest route to get this in Inkscape would be to figure out a syntax+semantics (how to deal with "exterior" boundaries!) and then write a hybrid solver that uses an analytic solution for dealing with discontinuities and a grid-based solver for the rest. Another question is whether diffusion curves are really the "best" way to go about this. There are some cases where diffusion curves might not give the most intuitive answer and I am looking at alternatives (and so are some other people). If you have specific ideas about what a system like this should support and/or have interesting cases where you feel diffusion curves do not meet your requirements (or where they perform surprisingly well), then please speak up. Hi, For those interested in Diffusion Curves, I recently finished my thesis on Diffusion Curves. Associated code can be found on LaunchPad: https://code.launchpad.net/~jaspervdg/ In short: I found that it's not that easy to render diffusion curves with high accuracy and looked at the cause of this, as well as possible solutions. It's not a full filters UI redesign, but only internal extension system based dialogs that provide easy understandable parameters to the existing predefined filters. Now that we have a minimal usable test set (25 available filters in Filters>Experimental), we'd like some comments on this project, and more specifically a *formal* approval that we are heading in the right direction. The project has a Launchpad Blueprint (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/custom-predefined-filters) and a specification wiki page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SpecCustomPredefinedFilters). Question about modifying the code for the curve tool

Greets! I'm new here. :) Earlier today I had an idea for an improvement to the curve drawing tool that would speed up my drawing workflow considerably and make it a lot more practical to draw things quickly and precisely with a mouse. Here's what I was thinking: When you're editing a curve, there's a button on the toolbar that sets the nodes along the curve to "auto-smooth". I discovered this a couple of days ago and instantly fell in love with it. At any rate, I was thinking it would be really nice to be able to draw auto-smoothed points with the curve drawing tool, perhaps by holding shift when you click the button, or holding shift, then clicking, dragging, and releasing. Non-auto-smoothed points are great if you want fine control, but if you're trying to lay down some clean-looking curves quickly, auto-smoothing seems to be the way to go. It would be really nice if I could draw them as I go, rather than just clicking the mouse and crating line segments, then going back and converting all of them. Hopefully I'm making sense so far. :) At any rate, I thought I'd poke around the 0.48 code and see if I could implement this feature myself, but I ran into an issue. Specifically, it appears that the code for drawing a curve initially adds points directly into the underlying curve data structure, whereas the code that distinguishes between normal curve points and auto-smoothed points is actually part of the user interface, and not part of the curve itself. Thus, when you add a point onto a curve, there doesn't appear (at least not at first glance) to be a way to easily get hold of the Node object and set it to auto-smooth mode. Here's what I've gleaned from looking at the code thus far: When you add a point by clicking the mouse button, it happens around pen-context.cpp:1272, where it calls pc->red_curve->curveto(...). The node type, however, is actually set from the MultiPathManipulator class, which I don't appear to have access to in pen-context.cpp. Is there a simple way of doing this? (I haven't checked other input formats of flavors of svg.) I use Cygwin on XP, and I discovered this when using dblatex for converting DocBook5 XML to PDF (when dblatex sees an SVG file referenced in XML it calls inkscape using absolute paths). When I test inkscape alone it clearly succeeds on relative paths but fails on absolute paths. Hi, I really couldn't say how other translators see this, but running 'intltool-update ru' had a quite a jaw-dropping effect on me (797 fuzzy, 403 untranslated after 99,5% ready for 0.48). New: Grayscale display mode

Hi all, I just committed a new display mode: grayscale. It is separate from the other display modes. The grayscale mode is a "Color display mode", see the menu. When activated, it shows all colors in grayscale on-canvas. This does not (yet?) influence exporting, or saving. It only concerns the on-canvas view of the file, like outline display mode. Right now, there is no preference to change the grayscale calculation. At the moment it uses: grayscale value = 0.33 * red + 0.59 * green + 0.11 * blue. I found this somewhere on internet, but forgot where, and it might be wrong/unusual. I intended to add a preference setting for these values, but have not done so. Let me know if that is desired. I tried assigning Shift+keypad5 to toggle the color display mode, but it does not work here on my netbook (Ctrl+keypad5 does work). Perhaps this is a Windows bug. If someone can suggest another keybinding, or... thanks! Johan

After "bzr revert -r 20" i can build inkscape but while copying the stuff into the inkscape folder i get an error message because of a missing file. The error message is: copy : c:\devlibs/bin/libpng14-14.dll to inkscape Make error line 689: copy : file /c:/devlibs/bin/libpng14-14.dll does not exist The problem is, that in R20 only the file libpng12-0.dll exists. New bitmap editor selector

Hi, I've just committed a patch (trunk revision 10062) that replaces the bitmap selector list (in the preferences) with a file selector. It reuses the existing "open" dialogs (the file type filter are set to executable files - or everything, on Gnu/Linux and OSX - and the preview disabled), but the change doesn't affect usual "open" or "import" operations. I hesitated to create a new specific dialog, but found it more logic to reuse the existing ones. The initial goal of that patch was to make it work on Windows (see Bug #26261, Edit externally doesn't work on Windows, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/262617), but it also adds command line arguments support (as far as the image is the last argument...). It should work on Windows (native dialog and GTK), Gnu/Linux and OS-X (thanks ~suv for your help!). Don't hesitate to comment. Regards. -- Nicolas

View mode: black&white

Hi all, I am thinking about adding a view mode that shows the image in black&white. This is very convenient for preparing color figures that should also be nice when printed in b/w. I remember we had this view mode feature "Print colors", but it was removed. I cannot find what this feature did, and why it got deleted (I do remember there was a good reason to delete it). A few passes of code cleanup

Hi, Just wanted to point out that this weekend I spent most of my Inkscape time doing a few passes of cleanup on the code, mainly getting rid of ancient C-style macros related to SPObject. Among the other issues was that the SP_OBJECT() macro was being used many places that it was not needed. However the most important issue is that such C style macros have been hiding issues with const vs. non-const parameters and object. I cleaned up just a couple of these problem areas, and marked a few more with TODO tags. The bottom line, though, is that we should probably all keep an eye out for const issues and make sure we correct what we can. For example, if a function takes a const parameter of some type such as int foo( SPObject const *object ); And then down somewhere in the body of the function does SPItem *item = SP_ITEM(object); Things will compile correctly, and at runtime will *almost* behave correctly. The SP_ITEM() macro will do the proper GObject thing of ensuring a pointer to the proper C object type is present and the struct bookkeeping is intact, etc. *However* the C-style cast in the middle of the macro will throw away const and we'll have a mutable object when our function contract misleadingly promises that we will not modify it at all. The macros also block method overloading, add introspection overhead that we'd prefer to avoid in inner loops and such, and cause a few other problems.

eps / pdf export

Hi, This message was sent previously but bounced because the attachments were to big, and then apparently got lost. Apologies in case this gets double-posted. To the issue: if I understand it correctly, the eps and pdf export was switched in the transition from version 0.46 to 0.47. In my experience, the new eps export doesn't work well, producing larger files and also converting some vector elements to raster in an unpredictable way. The new pdf export seems to produce less rasterization but also produces large files that can take a very long time to render in a pdf viewer. I suppose there was a reason for this transition, maybe gradients, transparency and such. However, where these features are not required, the old export routines produce more compact output and avoid wanton rasterization. Also, the old-style eps files can be used with LaTeX' psfrag mechanism, whereas the new-style ones cannot. So, my question is, could we please have the old eps export back - as an additional option, or maybe as a user-installable extension? Weird object

Hi! First, my apologies for not using a better subject nor going through all 3k bugs on launchpad. The problem in question is so weird that a dev probably knows best if it has already been reported. OTOH, I tried the latest bzr checkout, and it's still there, at least to some extend. Originally, all happened on 0.48 (Debian experimental) Steps to reproduce: 1. Open the attached svg. The line end markers in the right column usually don't stop at the circle, they end somewhat inside. (at least with 0.48, the bzr version opened it correctly) 2. Press ctrl+z (undo) to move the end markers to the right position. 3. Save, close and re-open the file: it seems step 2 never happened, everything is exactly how it was at step 1. Even weirder: Select everything and try to duplicate it or copy&paste it to a new document: the whole layout is completely ruined. Likewise, simply calling ctrl+g (grouping) on the objects make the arrows in the right column move. Does this happen on other systems, too? Do you see the culprit or can link it to an existing bug report? TIA

Updated 2geom -- what changed?

Hi all, I just updated our copy of lib2geom to the latest trunk version (bzr 10025). This greatly helps in improving Inkscape and lib2geom together. What changed in lib2geom since the last time we updated? Quite an important name change has happened: Geom::Matrix is now called Geom::Affine (to be found in affine.h instead of matrix.h). Some bugs were fixed (but were backported to Inkscape often too), and there are some other name changes. See the list below. I have not done extensive tests, Inkscape seems to build fine, runs ok, and what I tested (spiro LPE) works fine too. If there are any troubles, let me know. Hi there, i've some hardware problems with my computer, so i can't build the windows versions of inkscape with the "old" devlibs to get rid of the GUI issue. Can someone build all (installer, 7z, debug, zip and portable) again with the old devlibs (without GUI error) for 0.48.1 to get it finally published? I hope to get a new computer at the end of next week. The 0.48.1 versions on sf.net are with the GUI error and IMHO we should weight the issues. It's more annoying for the people to "live" with the GUI error than have a problem with PDF export. Who can help here to build new files? C++ificiation and GTKMM

Hello everyone, C++ification of inkscape has been a long term planned goal for inkscape. To the same accordance I would like to ask a few questions: 1. Does the dependency on GObject need to be removed?? The current code is huge and based on GObject as inheritance, increasing the complexity further. But if we wish to use the functionalities of GTK+ and remove GObject from the picture, wouldn't it be possible and feasible to instead use GTKMM to suffice for the same??? 2. While c++ifying what is going to be the fate of the inkscape's own implementation of garbage collection?? 3. What are your views regarding GTKMM to be introduced in the codebase for c++ification?? Easter eggs tutorial

Hello, We've recently received new translations (Galician and Polish) for the Easter eggs tutorial. It was expected to be released with Inkscape 0.45 (see http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes045#Translations.2C_tut…) but I can't find it in versions from 0.45.1 to 0.48.1. And up to yesterday, there was no translation at all for that tutorial. Is there a reason why it exists in inkscape-docs but not in the released versions? Thanks a lot for replying, Jon ! Well indeed I tried to embed the pictures in the SVG. Let's say they'are about 2560*1920 resolution (some less some more). So : 2560 * 1920 * 4 * 35 (number of pictures) / 1024 / 1024 = 656.25 MB and 70 MB (size on disk) * 4 / 3 = 93.3 MB Total = about 750 MB Which is indeed the memory amount taken by OO.org, but Inkscape quickly fills my 4 GB of ram (minus what is eaten by KDE of course) Well, this may be an expected behaviour actually, I just wanted to check if it had to be reported. Regarding memory usage when embedding pictures

Hi everyone ! First : thanks again to everyone involved for this great piece of software ! Sorry for all those bugreports about memory usage I made before (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/706294 regarding memory filled when using patterns and https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/708274 regarding a slight memory increase without doing anything particular :-) But I may need to fill another one : I stumbled upon a particular situation yesterday, and I would like to know if you think this is an Inkscape issue, or just a twisted use case. I wanted to import about 35 jpg pictures (from an old digital camera, so not huge resolutions but still). Inkscape managed to import and display them. I moved them onto the canvas and worked for about 2 minutes and then my hardisk started spinning tremendously, and the kernel shot down Inkscape. (I have no SWAP and 4 GB or ram) I tried to load my document again, and noticed Inscape was almost filling my 4 GB of ram. I tried to do the very same thing with OpenOffice draw and the memory usage was "only" of 0.7 GB. I definitely guess Inkscape is not meant for importing tons of pictures, but I was wondering whether there was some kind of memory leak or waste triggered by this particular scenario and if you think I should make another bugreport ? (BTW, as I told suv, I would love to contribute to "bounties" to help improve Inkscape -- regarding tasks that wouldn't be performed otherwise, like tedious memory optimization... :-) Cheers ! Mahen

The docbook Inskcape User Manual is no longer maintained. It was replaced in 2009 with an online manual on FlossManuals (http://en.flossmanuals.net/). Hello, A couple months ago I submitted a new .po for the Swedish translation of Inkscape. Since then I've been unable to spend time on Inkscape. I would like to contribute to the source code proper but haven't had the time to do so. Anyway, I recently compiled the latest lp:inkscape version and noticed that there are several issues with translation strings not appearing properly in the GUI. One example is #: ../src/filter-enums.cpp:52 #, fuzzy msgctxt "Filter blend mode" msgid "Multiply" msgstr "Multiplicera" I have not worked with gettext before, but examining the filter-enums.cpp source reveals no reason why this string should not be correctly translated: 51 {Inkscape::Filters::BLEND_NORMAL, C_("Filter blend mode", "Normal"), "normal"}, 52 {Inkscape::Filters::BLEND_MULTIPLY, C_("Filter blend mode", "Multiply"), "multiply"}, 53 {Inkscape::Filters::BLEND_SCREEN, C_("Filter blend mode", "Screen"), "screen"}, 54 {Inkscape::Filters::BLEND_DARKEN, C_("Filter blend mode", "Darken"), "darken"}, 55 {Inkscape::Filters::BLEND_LIGHTEN, C_("Filter blend mode", "Lighten"), "lighten"} Note that "Screen" is correctly translated! So, anyone know why the original English string is displayed in the GUI? If this could be explained to me, perhaps I could fix other occurrences of missing translations which I've noticed. I'm assuming the same issue exists for other translations as well. I did do "btool clean" before I compiled this version, so this should rule out the possibility that I'm using some old version of the compiled translation, unless perhaps my main Inkscape installation is interfering? Another issue is that I could not find myself in the list of translators in the "About Inkscape" dialog. Poppler issues *again*

Hey All, As we know, I like my distro to be bleeding... With libpoppler 0.16.0 we're again broken with compilation. I really think that we need to work on a proper solution for this because it seems like every 6 months we have to add additional checks to compensate for how things change. Also, I noticed that libwpg 0.2 isn't detected either, I tried mucking w/ configure.ac and had no success. Cheers, Josh

Hey guys, I was doing a teaching session on Inkscape for the Ubuntu User Days a few days ago. As with almost every show-and-tell, something went wrong. This was Inkscape 0.47 for Ubuntu 10.10 and the document that I created from scratch caused inkscape to crash. What's interesting is that the image was saved by the crash protection save feature. And although the image can be opened by gnome and seen in firefox, opening it in Inkscape 0.47 causes it to crash again. I'd like to know if the crash still exists in Inkscape 0.48, which unfortunately isn't available for Ubuntu yet. If it still exists, I'll report a bug and we'll get it nailed. Scales when importing.

Hi all! First, please slap me if ask something already asked, or already in the soft... My problem: Sometimes I make pictures or objects, sets, whatever, apart, in their own file, and then I import them in the main picture. When you're importing a SVG file, and you're changing its size, by default you're changing the strokes thickness accordingly . But I have an issue here. I often use the path effect "pattern along a path, stretched" for obvious pencil effects. but when I import the file, the objects with this effect have their "thickness" completely different. That's just ugly. I'd like to have the question/option "object -> path before importing", and choose what type of object I want to transform when importing (if possible). The workaround is obvious: change in paths the objects and save in a new file before importing. But, well... you know... ;-) Also, when I change the size of an object with this effect, I'd like to have its 'thickness' changing in the same proportions too (same demand when importing and resizing). I do know that when I don't have the same proportions in X and Y, it's a problem for the soft to decide what to do, because the thickness of the effect has just one value. But an option "choose the smallest" should be enough to solve the problem. By the way, something completely different: in the build 10017 for windows, the layer tool is buggy: eyes and padlocks are invisible, you must pass the mouse cursor over to see them, then they vanish again, except if you pass over from the first to the last layer. I didn't think you had to be completely familiar with the code since you are a 'student'. [Repost] Broken PDF files + crashes involving patterns

Hi to the team ! I just realized the 2 emails I sent to the inkscape-user ML were more appropriate on the devel ML (I first thought the devel ML was only for developers). I could just wait & see what happens, but it seems 0.48.1 is just around the corner, and I would feel guilty if some important bugs I stumbled upon were not reported in time ! Please allow me to copy/paste their content below : *[First mail : issues with patterns involving crashes]* Hi everyone ! First : thanks for the amazing work done by the Inkscape developers ! I'm a new casual Inkscape user:) I'm using it at the moment to carry on the work done by someone who owned inDesign. Thus, I used an .svg file that was exported from this piece of software. The export went fine overall, except some fonts issues (for instance, I could only select the first line in text frames) and colours were generally not good. I fixed almost anything by rewriting the text and changing colours but I encountered a few issues and problems in general with patterns. Indeed : in the document, there are a few polygons which are filled with a pattern which consists in many spirals. For some reasons the colours went wrong during the export but I couldn't change directly the colours used in the patterns. (more generally, I didn't know how to apply the same colours to many objects at the same time) So I converted the pattern back to an object, changed to colours, converted it to a pattern, and applied it to the object. So it did the trick. However I had many issues in the process : 1) Inkscape completely filled my memory twice and the kernel had to kill the task. This happened when using several times in a row the functions to convert patterns to objects or the contrary. All of a sudden, the hard drive began to spin non-stop (I have no swap but 4 GB of ram) and I could barely move my mouse cursor. It also happened when I was using the "node" tool to change the position / rotate etc. the pattern when applied to an object. 2) I managed to crash inkscape when undo-ing some operations that were involving a pattern<-> object conversion Also, I was wondering if there was a simpler way to handle patterns ? (edit them afterwards / change their colours / remove them from the list ?) 3) to make the operation easier, I decided to change some colours directly in the pattern definition in the XML file. It seemed to worked : the drawing was displayed properly in Inkscape or when exporting to .png. But when exporting to .pdf, the modified patterns were invisible or trashed when zooming in. Oops ! Can you guys please tell me if I should file some bugreports ? Maybe those bugs are known and fixed in the upcoming 0.48.1 ? (I'm also the one who filed the bugreport involving a font that was not displayed properly in Acrobat Reader under Windows, but was OK in Linux / OSX....) When zooming in, you can make out the polygon shape but it's filled with some kind of random pattern - if I scroll in the document, from the PDF reader, it even makes it *crash* and slows down my system a lot ! (of course, there was no display problem under Inkscape itself) It seems using some exported .svg files definitely don't please Inkscape a lot. Or this kind of patterns at least... Debian bugs

Dear All, The Inkscape package in Debian is used by several other major linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu) and hence it represents bugs which potentially affect a very large number of Inkscape users in linux. Its bug tracker is available at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?package=inkscape Unfortunately, the Debian tracker is quite out of date, and many of the reports have not been forwarded to the Inkscape tracker on Launchpad. I think it's quite important for Inkscape QA, that the Debian tracker gets back in sync with the upstream project. I have been (slowly) working through the reports, but there's a pretty large backlog and some of the bugs were probably fixed years ago. Would any of the upstream triagers be interested in helping out with this task? If so, a possible option would be for me to forward all the Debian bugs which relate to the upstream part of the Inkscape package. We could then triage the bugs in Launchpad, and I will update the Debian reports accordingly. If anyone has any alternative/better suggestions for how to do this, then please let me know. Inkscape 0.48 trunk compiling under Windows

Hi! I'm trying to compile Inkscape 0.48 trunk version under Windows following the instructions from http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port. I keep getting a few types of error messages: Make error line 291: problem compiling: src/eraser-context.cpp: In function 'void set_to_accumulated(SPEraserContext*)': src/eraser-context.cpp:752:55: error: 'r' was not declared in this scope The code at the problematic location looks like this: Inkscape::Rubberband::Rubberband* r; r = Inkscape::Rubberband::get(desktop); When I browse it under Eclipse, Eclipse hooks Rubberband up and shows the class definition promptly. However when I try to compile Inkscape from console, it throws an error described above. Make error line 291: problem compiling: In file included from src/extension/internal/bitmap/adaptiveThreshold.h:9:0, from src/extension/internal/bitmap/adaptiveThreshold.cpp:12: src/extension/internal/bitmap/imagemagick.h:14:22: fatal error: Magick++.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. Undefined ratio between px and inch

Hi all, On the user maillist there has been a discussion on a (imo) very serious flaw in the units (px, cm, in, m, ...) in Inkscape. In short, all units except 'px' are a 'lie'. Inkscape stores lengths in 'px' unit, while the SVG standard nowhere specifies the ratio between 'px' and one of the other units Inkscape features (like inch, cm, m, ...). Inkscape relates inch and other units to 'px' by assuming 90 px = 1 in. This is not defined in the SVG standard nor in the SVG file Inkscape creates. Although SVG permits the use of several other units besides 'px', for example inches, Inkscape luckily uses only px units to store graphics (correct me if I am wrong). This means that all objects will scale the same, whatever the ratio between 'px' and 'inch' is chosen on interpretation. Unfortunately, the absolute length information of objects is lost. These two rects have the same dimensions in Inkscape, but not in some other viewers (e.g. firefox): <rect width="90" height="90"/> <rect width="1in" height="1in"/> My concern is the following. Inkscape now chooses 90 px = 1 in. But this information is not stored in the SVG. If someone desides to have Inkscape follow the CSS default (96 px = 1 in) and changes Inkscape's code, this would mean that all old files will be opened with wrong dimensions. For webgraphics, perhaps not a big deal. For my book cover, for my technical drawings, etc... this is a very very big deal. So we have to come up with an idea to explicitly define the lengths of the units we expose to the user. Jon has suggested using the 'viewBox' attribute. In think that <svg width="2in" height="2in" viewBox="0 0 180 180"> would explicitly define Inkscape's measure of 90 px = 1 inch (viewbox coords are expressed in px). text object rotation & position coordinates (x and y values)

Hi, all. I am trying to use a script to edit inkscape SVG code, and mostly succeeding, except with coordinate values. Specifically, with text objects, there seems to be some tricky function generating the "x" and "y" values (object coordinates). The function seems to be tied to the transform values. With no transformation in effect (theoretically, with the matrix being (1,0,0,1,0,0) -- i say theoretically because the line is absent when these are the (implied) values), the "x" and "y" values are what one would expect, when one drags the object left and right, up and down. The x and y values change in the expected manner. However, when the text object gets transformed, as in the example below: transform="matrix(0.42584538,0.90479595,-0.90479595,0.42584538,0,0)"> transform="matrix(0.42584538,0.90479595,-0.90479595,0.42584538,0,0)" the x and y values become severely strange... Dragging the text object vertically affects the x value (as well as the y value), and horizontal drag affects both as well. The values become negative in an unexpected way. And visually, the objects are not where the script attempts to place them. Could someone please clue me in about the function (the math of it)? thanks in advance

idea: Exposée-like effect for visualizing complex stacks of svg elements in Inkscape ?

I have been using inkscape a lot recently and I noticed that sometimes it can become very annoying to select svg elements that are in the middle of a pile of other elements. Thus, I was thinking that we could have a key-combo that would break appart all "hidden" shapes to allow you to select one of them, and after that, all shapes would be places back in their correct places. Sometimes I do something similar to that by hand, but an automated UI feature would be very useful. Also, it would be solely a visualization mode, not actualy modifying elements in the SVG DOM. Suggestion: allow to select next shape color with color selector

I wanted to run this by you before submitting a feature request. Currently, if you want to draw a new shape, and you want to select its color and stroke in advance, your only option is to use the swatches - you cant select some arbitrary color for the next shape. Selecting the stroke width is impossible. I suggest making the Fill and stroke dialog active even when nothing is selected, so that changing it affects the next created shape. I know that there's a setting where you can set a specific style for each tool instead of drawing with the last used style. In this case we have two options: 1. Upon changing to a tool that has its own style, the fill and stroke dialog remains grayed out. 2. Upon changing to a tool that has its own style, the fill and stroke dialog changes to reflect this style, and modifying it changes the tool's style for the rest of the session.

Palettes

First, all my greetings for the new year ^^. Second the palettes. You can change/configure the color of the fill/stroke with 3 tools: - The one shown with Shift+Ctrl+F - The palettes -> Shift + Ctrl + W - The palette always shown on the bottom of the screen. Until today, I never used the last 2 ones, because they were simply useless for me, preferring the first one (a gimp-like tool). Now it's different, I read the documentation and discovered how to edit the palettes, and change the tip texts (for naming colors). I have to do that by hand, but it's better than nothing. I need user-defined palettes. But. I think that's something is missing: a direct link between the palettes and "Shift+Ctrl+F". In the tool "Shift+Ctrl+F" I'd like to see: - Another tab, named "palette" with a palette that can be changed/edited/saved/whatever dynamically. - 3 buttons (under cursors blur and opacity): 'add' to add the color shown above (for stroke or fill, the one which is active) in the dynamic palette ; 'copy' to copy the color shown above in a special clipboard ; 'paste' to paste the color in the clipboard to the active color. - Of course, the tab 'palette' would have all the comforts: change active color, edit/delete colors, rename them, save/load/create the palette, replace the one in the bottom of the screen, and so on. - The gimp palettes seem to avoid alpha. Pity, but it doesn't matter. These are just my little thoughts in the beginning of the year. Maybe changes are planned for futures versions, I must admit that I didn't watch. If it's not the case I really think that something must be done to change palettes in a more 'user-friendly' way. My 2 cents, Teto. By the way: 0.48.1 is out soon. Feature request: text object could be viewed differently in the editor

Dear Inkscape developers, I would love to see a feature from TpX and Jpgfdraw. When using the pdf export with latex option, the latex code may get too long and obscure the other objects in a small figure. In TpX and Jpgfdraw, the properties dialog of the text objects allows to specify two text strings: one for to be typeset and one for the editor to show. If this is implemented in Inkscape, the figures would look neat because then the user needs only write a short hint to the actual latex formula for showing in the editor. Currently I have the following workaround. In a text object with a long latex string, I write the actual latex code in the description property of the text object (by right.clicking on it) and write a short hint to the latex code inside \cm{}. This command I define in the latex document: \newcommand{\cm}[1]{} to make sure that only the description is typeset in the output pdf. Mukhtar

Should inkscape take over libcroco?

I just received a fairly surly reponse to a libcroco bug on bugzilla.gnome. Apparently the upstream is so inactive that gnome doesn't want to see bugs about it. Inkscape appears to be a major user of this library and (last I knew) had some unmerged (or at least unreleased) patches for it. Might be worthwhile for an inkscape dev to get developer access to the project on gnome to keep it alive. Does any of the experts of Inkscape's current build system know a) Are changes in Inkscape's sources needed to avoid the warnings mentioned below, occuring with autoconf 2.68 installed? (See attached file for a log from inkscape trunk). b) Or is this is a platform-related issue that needs to be addressed in the portfile for autoconf in MacPorts? Similar warning messages occur when running autogen.sh on a checkout or local branch of Inkscape trunk (outside of MacPorts, but using the dependencies installed via an up-to-date MacPorts installation) - only noticed after the autoconf port was updated to 2.68. It doesn't cause any configure and/or build failures though for Inkscape AFAICT. Fourth-year student projects

Hi Inkscape developers, I teach computer science in France (in this school: http://www.polytech.upmc.fr/version-english.html ) and my fourth-year students are required to work on a project for a few months (2-3 months), for about 2 days a week. Instead of asking them to do "random" projects, I would like them to (try to) contribute to open source projects. In particular, I would love that they contribute to Inkscape. We have three main constraints in the choice of the project: - be do-able by 2 students in a few months; - be a challenge interesting enough to provide work to 2 students for a few months; - include a design phase (understanding the topic, asking questions, designing a planning, find algorithms, etc.) and a coding phase (this excludes code cleaning, documentation, bug-fixes, etc.). Ideally, I would like the students to be mentored by an Inkscape developer who could answer their questions and give some directions; I'd like a least to be sure that the project is interesting for inkscape developers. You can think about this like something similar to the Google Summer of Code. The main difference is that we don't really select candidates so the students may not be very good and the project can obviously fail; but sometimes they can also be very efficient and motivated! I've checked the google summer of code page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_Of_Code). The import/export code might be interesting to try with them. The font designing idea and the ICC support migh also be cool. Are these proposition still up-to-date? I'm of course open to other ideas. Something I was thinking about: I often use Inkscape to design posters and I'd really like to have an option to use the Knuth-Plass algorithm and hyphenation (at least in English). I know that they're not in the SVG specifications but this could be only for pdf exports. Another feature which would be useful is to be able to link text blocks (as do Indesign and Xpress) [again, this is not in the svg specs]. This would make an interesting challenge for our students. What do you think? Would some of you be interested in helping us? What task would you suggest? At any rate I need your help to calibrate a task (or several tasks) so it's not too hard but challenging enough. Thank you and merry Christmas. OpenMP fix

I just discovered that OpenMP support (used to parallelize Gaussian blur) is not functional on Linux and OS X because of a missing AC_DEFINE. Here is a patch that fixes this problem. Admins: please apply to 0.48 branch also. Regards, Krzysztof
