Hi folks, This is just a heads up - I've setup a debian unstable (sid) repository at http://art.sidux.com/ - currently the only package is weekly svn builds of inkscape (as well as the sidux-art-keyring gpg pkg), including i386 and amd64 arches, plus source. My interest is part inkscape, part learning how to maintain a relatively complex debian package, and I'm learning as I go - I've been keeping it up now for > 3 months so I figured it's safe to announce - The intention is to eventually include development builds of various other tools useful to the sidux art team, but for now... I'm keeping it simple :) Any/all feedback welcome - Regards, Bernie

Building unit tests on Win32

I uploaded a patch to the bug tracker that enables building of CxxTest unit tests on Windows. Basically it adds a target linkcxxtests that generates an executable that performs all the tests. The relevant bug is: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/208821 There are two main points I'd like some feedback on: 1. Is the way I let buildtool generate the required .cpp files using cxxtestgen (see the compile target) acceptable? 2. Does anyone have a (big) problem with compiling (not linking) the (unit) tests as part of the normal build process? I added the cxxtest files to the normal compile target because it was easier that way (I had some problem with the dependencies if I did it differently) and because it will break the build if anyone breaks a test (which people really shouldn't do). Note that I'm only talking of compile-time problems here. As it is now the tests are not linked during in the normal link target, and they are definitely not executed. Jasper van de Gronde

OSX native compile error

l-system fern formula

I'm trying to draw fern pattern using l-system, I found a formula on a website that says you get this: http://www.home.aone.net.au/~byzantium/ferns/leaf34.gif if you use this formula(s): angle 8 axiom x a=n n=o o=p p=x b=e e=h h=j j=y x=F[+A(4)]Fy y=F[-B(4)]Fx F=@1.18F@...1985... (I separated rules with ; ) But the result I got doesn't match: http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1948/fernmt4.png Is this a bug in l-system, or are these rules wrong, or am I using the effect wrong? btw the image I got was made with order 34 as the website suggested, but it takes a long while till Inkscape calculates it (nearly 100000 nodes), I'd suggest a much lower order for testing ;)

NEW: relinking clones

A new command, Relink Clone to Copied in Edit > Clone, allows you to relink any clone to a different original object without changing its other properties. Just copy (Ctrl+C) the object you want to be the new original, select any number of clones, and choose the Relink command. PS/EPS import proposal

Would anyone object if I switch PS and EPS import from using pstoedit/skconvert to this: - convert ps to pdf with ps2pdf from Ghostscript - import pdf to Inkscape? Reasons: - Ghostscript is doubtlessly the most competent open source software for dealing with Postscript; it is cross-platform, actively updated and is much more commonly installed than anything else we've been using - our PDF importer is the best importer we have, and it works better than any third party things that claim to produce svg - for multipage postscript, we get for free a dialog for selecting the page (and later, the option to import multiple pages into one multipage SVG will only have to be coded once for PDF and work for PS at once). Testing by people in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/190424 as well as my own experience tells me this route works quite well. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

SPDocument initialization

Hi guys, In cleaning up the autosave patch, I came across an uninitialized member variable in SPDocument (the flag for modified since last save). I cleaned up the initialization and added all the member variables I could find. However, it's possible this might unmask some other bugs or workarounds. Just wanted to give a heads-up on it.

Hey, guys, Help! I'm trying to think up the interface for sticking, and the easiest would be to add a few buttons to Node edit mode to specify "stick:" you select two nodes and click the icon. Drawing a line from one stick point to another is fine too. I think there could be at least two types: stick node and stick object. Stick object is when you want the whole object to follow the other one around. Stick node only - with ability to stick handlers as well - is more used for linked fills and such. The whole object isn't moved, instead gets deformed by pulling the node in directions. There is one big problem though: does Anybody have any ideas how to make the nodes of two non-combined objects visible simultaneously for sticking? Proposals? The problem with combination, even if temporary, is that the combined objects lose their properties: a big no-no. Possibilities include: 1. Allow node-editing mode to show the nodes of multiple selected objects 2. Instead of targeting any available node, the user must first specify stick points or segments on individual objects. In a "stick" mode, all available stick points on all objects show up. This is also "cleaner" than when All the nodes show up. 3. Or same as above, except the available stick points only appear on mouse-over: you start drawing a line from the starter stick point to the destination stick point, upon drawing on the object the stick points of that object become visible. 4. A bit like above, but without needing to specify a custom stick-point: when drawing the connector, when you approach an object the nodes on said object become visible. So? Which one is acceptable? Or does anybody have completely different proposals in mind?

GSoC tech drawing project -- status report / outlook

Hi all, now that my recent changes are committed to trunk (which was a bit delayed because the LPE stacking forced me to rewrite some things), here is a little update on the status of my GSoC project. Caution, it's slightly lengthy! But even if you're not interested in most of it, I'd appreciate any comments on the questions/ideas mentioned (you may want to skip the first few paragraphs in this case). I started by writing three very simple LPEs for various geometric constructions. These are: circle-with-cadius, perpendicular-bisector and tangent-to-curve (in the following abbreviated CwR, PB and TtC). They were mainly chosen for the different kinds of user interaction they require so that I can use them as an indicator of what is still missing. Although LPE parameters can already be adapted using the LPE dialog, it is clear that for a user friendly interface we need knotholder handles for LPE items. I first added these in a quick-and-dirty way but it quickly became apparent that for a "correct" and more powerful solution the knotholder-related classes needed to be converted to C++. So this is what I did next (see my recent email for details). This also made it possible to add on-canvas handles for LPEs in a semi-automatic fashion similar to how parameters are added. I will put a description of how this works on the wiki soon. It works pretty well, but perhaps the mechanism can still be improved or made more elegant. Please let me know if you have any comments. Note that there already existed a PointParam parameter class for LPEs but the new handles do *not* duplicate their functionality since the latter can be used to alter _any_ kind of parameter, analogously to how handles for regular SPItems are used (e.g., with TtC there are handles to adjust the length of the tangent which is controlled by *scalar* parameters, not PointParams). Unfortunately, PointParams are currently broken due to the C++ification process but once I fix this, handles will also be added automatically for them. This will render the inconvenient "edit on canvas" button obsolete and make them much more comfortable to use (I'm looking forward to seeing the new lattice deformation in action then :)). One of the main remaining issues with handles is that we must eventually be able to simultaneously allow KnotHolders and NodePaths for LPE items. E.g., for PB and TtC it is essential to be able to edit the original path while at the same time adjusting the parameters on canvas. Currently this is not possible because an item can only have either a knotholder or a nodepath but not both. My first decent attempts to simply enable both for certain items consistently resulted in crashes. Since I'm not very familiar with the shape-editor code I'd appreciate any hints or even guidelines how this can be done. For instance, which parts of the code rely on the assumption that only one of knotholder/nodepath is active? Bulia, you said that you did some decent work in this direction. Do you have special advice how to proceed? Another simple recent change was to allow LPEs to either suppress the red helper path (which indicates the original path) or to display it permanently while the item is selected. E.g., for spiro splines it is suppressed while for PB and TtC it makes sense to know how the perpendicular bisector or the tangent are located with respect to the original curve so the helper path is displayed. BTW, I noticed a bug in my code - sometimes the helper curve does not disappear when the item is deselected. I will investigate this. What's the correct way to make the item disappear, anyway? The function remove_temporary_canvasitem() doesn't seem to work. IMO, the next big step to improve user interaction is to get rid of the "first draw a shape, then apply LPE" scheme. Most, if not all, of the planned LPEs only require very simple paths to which the LPE is applied. For example, CwR and PB only need a straight line, for a future angular bisector and circle-through-3-points we would need a path consisting of just three nodes, etc. My idea is this: Let's have a special mode in the pen and/or pencil tool which waits for a given number (say N) mouse clicks, then converts these into a polyline consiting of N nodes and (N-1) straight line segments (no curved paths are possible) and finally automatically applies a specified LPE to this polyline. This would be very similar to how the Spiro spline mode of the pen/pencil tool works now, only that arbitrary LPEs could be applied and that (optionally?) only polylines are allowed. As soon as we have a toolbar for the new geometric LPEs in place, the new "LPE mode" in the pen tool would be activated by pressing the corresponding button. Does this make sense? Any suggestions for details of the workflow? After this is done, I'm going to write the remaining planned LPEs (which I haven't done yet because I considered it favorable to have the on-canvas machinery in place in order to avoid major rewritings). This should be very quick (I already have drafts for a couple of them on my hard drive). Then I'd like to start tackling automatic toolbar integration of LPE parameters. I don't have a clear idea yet of what is needed for this so if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Johan, can you comment on this? Can I simply integrate RegisteredWidgets into existing toolbars or what kind of groundwork is needed to achieve this? Many thanks for reading thus far and for any comments you may have! Max

Hi... Is there a how to for creating integrated printer software for inkscape? My assumptions are that inkscape can only print to raster and / or postscript type printers. And postscript is used when plotting or cutting is how the printer works. Beyond that, are there any provisions for "plugin" software printer drivers? For instance, what happens when you want to print to an HP plotter that understands HPGL? ...thanks

buildtool on linux

Hi all, I've been working on buildtool some more, to try to make it more generic and portable. There is a lot of work to be done, but as of yesterday, it can now build Inkscape on Linux. build-lx.xml is the build file. Buildtool has a built-in package-config reader, which makes things a LOT easier. I uploaded a build here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/btool/inkscape-0806101650-btool.7z It uses binreloc, so it can be run from anywhere on the disk. It does not include all of the special dependencies of Inkscape. We will work on that later. It will likely just copy the not-so-common .so's to the $INKSCAPE/lib dir, exactly the same as the win32 "dist" target copies dlls. bob

Win32 Gtk locale

Hi, all. On the channel, <gal_bolle> pointed out that although Inkscape's translations strings are working correctly, Gtk's are not. Looking around, I noticed that in the win32 package, we are copying devlibs/lib/locale and not devlibs/share/locale to the package. I believe the first is for translating the tools, and the second is for translating the runtime. I made the adjustment to build.xml and uploaded a build here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0806111651.7z Please try this out and see if the Gtk stock button names are translated. Since the file dialogs are now native, they are not a good place to look. Maybe try the "Close without saving" dialog. bob

XML cleanups

A few months back, I'd been threatening to make some significant changes to the XML code during this release cycle, and one of them just bit us. I was hoping it would go smoother than it apparently has. The issue is this: a lot of cleanup and implementation-hiding in the XML code is blocked by the fact that many parts of the code currently create XML nodes which are not initially attached to any document. This is compounded by the fact that a great deal of code doesn't know what the relevant document is, since it was long assumed that it could be set up with a document later. So, a lot of code has to be rewritten to plumb the relevent XML document in. I added an assertion to trap any code that neglects to create nodes with a document, and am proceeding from there to rework the affected code. That was the reason for the recent "Save As" crash. I wish there were a "nicer" way to do this, but after six years I've come to the conclusion that the drastic approach is the only way to get this done. -mental

By the way, while thinking about stickies, I think I've finally thought of a possible animation interface for Inkscape! :D (though really, I'm in no hurry to see it implemented, not before the Inkscape interface is more dynamic) A long, Long time ago, I tried Flash in Summer Camp, and I'll just say that I didn't like it (though I don't know how it works now). The approach I'm suggesting is that you add actions to a given object. You basically call up a (big) panel and add actions much as you would a live path effect. When you use the "edit animation" mode, you can turn on the animation "skeleton", which basically makes icons appear next to the object to show if the types of transformations applied to it that frame. From there, the most common parameters can be edited in the toolbar by clicking the action icon of choice: "From" field, "To" field, anchor points, speeds etc. Types of actions: Move, Rotate, Resize, Opacity, Color, Blur, Stick, Free Transform. People can create their own plug-in effects. The effects can collapsed so that you can easily see the list of effects on that object. The panel looks a bit like this (> is collapsed, V is open): Action: [+] Add action ----------------------------------- > "Jump:" Move | Start: [ ] | End: [] V "Swing:" Rotate Name: Swing Start: [] Offset: [] End: [] Offset: [] Add trigger: [+] Anchor point: [] Speed: [] Repeat type: [] [] Offset (clicking opens up X and Y values) [] Jitter (clicking opens up X and Y values) ----------------------------------- Major elements: 1. Start and end: Start has 2 possible types: - Date - Trigger - "End" also has duration (which basically is a "+ [value]" figure) 2. Triggers. The use of triggers is what makes time management easy in this case. You can define Absolute triggers with specific times, or you can create a new one within the object and based upon an action. Basically, in "Hang", clicking on Add Trigger will pop up a panel asking you to: - name the trigger (example: Man.StopSwing) - the condition: either as a proportion of action completed (0%, 50%, 80%, 100%), or a specific parameter (ex.: angle reached 90 degrees) >From then on, this trigger can be called upon in another object and action. This way, you can specify that as soon as one object is done with an action, the other starts another action. "Offset" can be used too (ex: an object starts moving 20 seconds before another reached the end of a movement path). I prefer this trigger-centric approach because it makes time management that much easier across multiple objects. Back when I tried that older version of flash, I had to go looking which frames were doing what. :\ Here you can just change the duration of one action, and the rest automatically falls through. Note: triggers can also be events such as MouseOver, Click, etc. 3. Anchor point. You define anchor points on an object (eventually naming them something other than "Node9011"), and this will be the point of attach of the action. Different actions can have different anchor points. "Move" also asks you to specify a path. "Stick" asks you to define a destination point on a destination object: you're sticking one point to another. 4. Parameters: for rotation, you define the rotation speed and/or amplitude, for resize you define the starting and ending sizes. If possible, jitter and offset value options can be added. Of some interest, the main parameter (rotation, resize etc) could be a custom curve. A straight curve from one value to another is a linear resize for example. But you can also make waves of decreasing amplitude, which in the case of resize/Height only, for example, makes the object look bouncy after say... falling to the ground. 5. Free transform works a bit differently than the rest. My proposed interface is this: this action is applied onto an object with -multiple- layers that count as separate frames (eventually with sub-layers, but it's the first-level layers that are counted as Frames). So you don't do the transformations within the animation file, but separately, but this should be fine as it makes your CPU life easier. The user basically creates an image, makes several copies on separate layers, makes changes to each, then imports it into the animation file. When applying free transform (or whatever it can be called), the user determines how the image morphs from one frame to another (usually the underlying skeleton moves from one position to another, the user can specify time for each frame as well as relations to trigger events) An "update" option is quite possible, so you make adjustments to the external files and see them updated directly. En error console pops up if the result is too different. :P 6. Stickies. Stickies are a very important part of this process, because it means a whole lot less of actions! Example: A man is carrying a box, puts it on a truck, and the truck drives away. Breakdown: - Add Stick action to box, so you don't have to redefine the walking. - Add Move action to man walking. - The Stick action stops when the man arrives at the end of his movement path. - Add Move action from box to truck. - Add stick action from box to truck. - Add move action to truck. The box just follows it because of the stick. This greatly simplifies things because it avoids having to duplicate paths and values (which can be a whole lot after a while) Other example: - a Linux penguin walks to a seesaw. Linux penguin jumps onto the seesaw (move action). - the seesaw rotates. Linux penguin also goes down because as we also define a "stick" action to that end of the seesaw. - when that side of the seesaw reaches ground (angle trigger), the object on the other side (a Microsoft logo), that used to be "stuck" on the object until then, gets unstuck and does an arc trajectory into a nearby trash bin. :) In the meantime you have the grass defined to swing back and forth with no conditions at all, though the penguin stepping on it may "trigger" it to flatten. 7. There should be an automatic summary timeline for each object to show trigger events and actions applied. The timeline keeps it simple, triggers only show their name upon mouse-over (though they may be different colours depending on whether they result from an action underway in this object, in another object, or from clicking something), and tiny action logos appear in the timeline (mouse-over shows the name, type, and highlighted line and triggers to show how long it lasts) Once the user is happy, he orders Inkscape to calculate the entire output, makes any adjustments necessary before re-calculating, and exports. That's it! :D I plan to make visual mock-ups, but would there be any problems with this approach? Some people are probably familiar with the Flash way of doing things (whatever it is they are doing now), but I do prefer simply saying "Let's add a simultaneous move and rotation on this or that object. It lasts This long and stops when another object reaches a certain state." Yay? Nay? Anyway, users can write up all sorts of fancy effects on their own, like the object getting cut up in all sorts of ways or leaving a temporary ghost trail while resizing. People could download those as extra effects plug-ins.

"Inkforge": Inkscape Becomes an SVG Font Editor?

Hi, (I've blogged this at http://understandinglimited.com/2008/06/09/proposing-inkforge/) I hope I can inspire people to patch Inkscape to make it suitable for drawing type :-) SVG Fonts isn't supported much anywhere, but Chris Lilley's talk at LGM2008 has got me thinking :-) Could Inkscape become an SVG Font Editor? Designing type involves working at four scales: A. designing individual letters ("drawing letters") B. designing letters that look like they belong together ("drawing type") C. designing letters that fit together to form words ("designing metrics") D. designing letters that fit together to form paragraphs ("looking at typeset text") I think Inkscape could be good at all four of these. Inkscape already has a template "fontforge_glyph" that sets up a canvas suitable for drawing a single letter - (A) One way of making (B) possible could be through layers. SVG has "svg fonts" already, and this could work by having each glyph appear to be a layer. It would be possible to write a simple program to output an XML tree with the glyphs you want to design, and have a bunch of SVG Font templates for various common scripts. For this to really be useful though, Inkscape needs to have a new kind of layer-specific guideline. Inkscape doesn't appear to have this right now, but since it has global ones, this ought to be simple to add. (If it isn't again the SVG spec, it can be in the Inkscape-specific namespace.) Then, if the layers palette and "duplicate window" features could be extended to make it easy to compare layers (and thus glyphs) - stacking them, seeing them side by side, and so on. The FontForge tutorial at http://fontforge.sourceforge.net/editexample5.html explains a little about designing metrics - (C). Having the left and right bearings appear as the page size (width) would be simple - and then Inkscape would be extended to allow changing the page size's width directly on the canvas, instead of via the document properties dialog, so just like moving a guideline. But perhaps having layers with different page sizes is against the SVG spec… Although that would be the most straightforward way of setting the sidebearings from a UI perspective, if that isn't possible, having the metrics appear as layer-specific guides with "left bearing" and "right bearing" IDs or Class could do the same job easily enough. But what is really needed is to create a special "metrics" dialog. This could re-use the "duplicate window" feature to grab the glyph's outline and render it on another canvas, a special one where the left and right bearings can be adjusted in the context of several letters next to each other in a word. (Again, see the FontForge tutorial if you're not familiar with font editor programs.) For typesetting text with the font, it would be straightforward to write some (python) glue scripts that open the SVG Font within FontForge, compile it into a system font format (Type 1, OpenType CFF) and then generate a PDF 'specimen' sheet to be printed. But eventually Inkscape will have to be able to render SVG Fonts directly on the canvas, and then it will be simple to have a "paragraph view" layer with some text that uses the glyphs from the self SVG. -- Regards, Dave I support www.gnuherds.org - democratic free software jobs

FireFox (FF2 and FF3)

Regarding SVG support in FireFox, after some testing we came to the following conclusions. (1) tspan is used to position each character (more) precisely on a page (for example if a text string uses kerning) As far as we can tell is that FireFox (FF2 and FF3) does not support this feature. It just ignores the tspan commands. (2) FF2 does not support multiple spaces in string. It looks like FF2 ignores the additional spaces between the words. We just added a feature to our PDF FLY graphics conversion suite which extract the font glyphs from unknown embedded fonts in a PDF file and include them in the resulting SVG file. Can't get the SWF output working anymore

Can anybody explain why I can't get the SWF output extension working or even it to show in saving dialog. You can find a link to this extension from: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ExtensionsRepository I extracted the .inx file to extensions folder, but I can't see SWF file saving option when saving a file. I compared the syntax of the swf_output.inx file to pdf_output.inx.txt file that I found from the same folder. I noticed that <name>, <filetypename> and <filetypetooltip> tags had an underscore in the pdf_output file. I tried to add underscores to swf_output with no success. I also removed txt extension from pdf_output.inx file. After that corresponding saving option appeared to Inkscape. I also started to change pdf_output file to correspond to swf_output file. I could change name and id tags to <_name>SWF Output</_name> <id>org.inkscape.output.swf</id> in pdf_output.inx and it still shows up in save dialog. If I change anything else "Adobe PDF via postscript (*.pdf)" saving option won't show up. Any ideas? Actually, I would like if one could choose the unit and step of All options out there. For example, when doing Live Path effects, clicking on the "width" field gives me increments of 0.01. Now really, the minimum increment -I-'d want is 0.1. Clicking 10 times just to get 0.1 is not very feasible, so it'd be nice if for all tools, in the options area, you can set a unit yourself. That and, Shift-click to change in increments of 10 times the base unites. Alt-click can go in increments of 0.1 times the base unit too. Does such a proposal exist already?

Proposal: stick to node or stick to segment

The concept is pretty simple: you take two nodes, you have them "stick" together (think snapping), and when you move the other node directly or indirectly (moving the whole object), the other node stuck to it moves along. Same with segments. It basically makes a copy of that segment and its handles, and sticks all of them together. Same with whole objects actually, I forgot that one, you "snap" the whole object onto a point. Background: I mainly came up with the concept because I like (trying to) do drawings with complex strokes. The new LPE interface makes the complex strokes a lot easier, but if you actually want to fill anything in between, you have to edit the strokes And the fill (basically doubling the edit time). Now, you Could tell me to just deal with it and/or delete the fill and make a new one, but it becomes a whole other story if Inkscape wants to include animation one day, so consider this a preliminary feature: http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/2604/stickynodesja9.png The problem is the interface. We could have a sub-mode of Edit, or a whole new tool, and of course we'll need shortcuts. Then for that new fill option, a new option would have to be added as well. I'm still pondering the matter (as well as the text tool interface), but maybe some of you have ideas already? This way at least we could discuss the blueprint. Maybe when Summer of Code 2009 comes around, some student would be interested and take up the whole thing! :)

SPCurve::get_pathvector instead of get_bpath

Hi all, Maybe you've noticed: I reworked the internals of SPCurve such that now it is possible to get the old Inkscape pathtype (NArtBpath) or the 2geom type PathVector (both representations are kept in-sync with each other). I have started converting all calls for the old type (get_bpath or SP_CURVE_BPATH) to the new PathVector type (get_pathvector). Helping me with this conversion would be really nice, but I think I have already dealt with most of the easy ones. Therefore... My request is for *new* code to use get_pathvector! I'm sure you'll find the 2geom type much nicer to work with than the old path type. If you need help, talk to us in the lib2geom jabber channel; some times functionality is lacking from 2geom and we are very interested in hearing about them! :-) Johan

Segfault in select-context.cpp

Hi, all. I am geting a segfault at line 413 in select-context.cpp during startup: switch (event->type) { where "event" is null. This is in sp_select_context_root_handler(), which is called by, in the stack, sp_event_context_root_handler() sp_desktop_root_handler(), which is called by sp_marshal_BOOLEAN__POINTER() which is a Glib thing. "event" appears to be null all the way up. Has there been a change to any of the knot code to cause this, or am I seeing a typical verb alignment problem from verbs.h being edited and a clean build being required? I did a clean build twice, just in case, but no effect. bob

Multiple NR::Filter symbols

Hi all. verbalshadow and I have been having link errors today. The reason is, that sp-filter.o and nr-filter.o both contain all of the methods of NR::Filter. After a lot of searching, I noticed that sp-filter.cpp #includes nr-filter.cpp. Not the .h, but the .cpp. That can't be right. :-) Does someone need to fix this? Things work nicely with that line commented out. bob

Hi Peter, devels, I have just merged my branch back into trunk. Most of SPCurve's methods are also correct for the 2geom path in it, so one could start using get_pathv instead of get_bpath to get path data. If you want to do testing for me, please comment out this line in /src/display/curve.cpp: #define NO_CHECKS (put comment // in front) This enables the checking I have coded at the end of those functions to check whether there is a difference between the NArtBpath repr and PathVector repr. Because of this "doubling" of path operations, things will be slower, but I didn't notice a huge set back. The doubling will be removed when it works 100% okay, so no worries! Thanks! Johan

Minor inconsistency with disabling snapping by "key accelerators"

Since I'm using Inkscape mostly for technical drawings I've come across minor inconsistency with disabling snapping by key accelerators. This is an extremely useful feature when you need to temporarily disable, otherwise turned on, snapping - for example for positioning text etc. However, I find the behavior a bit inconsistent. Currently it is like this: If you want to disable snapping by key accelerator while: 1) MOVING a path, shape, group, text etc., you have to press SHIFT. 2) MOVING a NODE of a CURVED PATH, you have to press SHIFT or ALT. 3) MOVING a NODE of a STRAIGHT PATH, you have to press ALT. If you press SHIFT, a straight path becomes curved. So, the 3rd behavior is somehow nonintuitive to me. I think it would be better if the same key accelerator would be used in all cases. I would vote for SHIFT since I'm used of it. In this case I guess that for straight paths SHIFT and ALT should be switched. Though, on the other hand, if ALT comes from "alternative" it would make more sense to use ALT for disabling snapping. Anyway, maybe I'm missing something here, because I'm really much more technically than artistically oriented. So, is there some other explanation of this? Rok

Tablet support on win32

I have been hearing that there has been some trouble getting Wacom tablets working on win32. Gtk had a bigfix release today, 2.12.10, that mentions Wacom support as one of its fixes. Give this a look: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0806041806.7z I added the new Gtk, Glib, and Pango revisions to the devlibs. Just "svn up" now to receive them. If you notice that the build is a bit larger, it's because for some strange reason, Gtk changed the name of their PNG DLL dependency from libpng13.dll to libpng12-0.dll. Rather than spend several days recompiling everything that needs PNG, we'll just make a copy for now. (ARRRGH!) bob

I have been lurking in Linux Printer Driver land and was very happy to find an early copy of a Python script designed to provide the necessary "linkage" between Inkscape and a craftrobo cutter. With a little change to the code, we verified it works with a wishblade as well. But you might have to wait until there is support in the down loadable python script. Basically, you print from Inkscape "using PostScript operators" (not as a bitmap). And, instead of sending the output to a printer, you "pipe" it to the python application. This operation is actually described in the Inkscape print popup menu. When you click on print, the python GUI pops up giving you more options. This GUI interface is *much* simpler than the actual graphtec software. Most anything to do with the image needs to be done in Inkscape. The only real control on the GUI are the paper size, the cutting speed and the cutting pressure. I suppose this can also be done in windows. My *assumptions* are that there is a windows binary for inkscape as well as python and python related software. If that's the case, then you may be able to skip setting up a Linux box. Some issues with using .46

As we're using .46, here are some issues that have arisen (some pre-date .46). Should they be added as RFE's? Sodipodi absolute paths - if you add an image, then delete it, the old image absolute path seem to remain in the file. Maybe it's the sodipodi namespace stuff. In fact is there a good reason for both an xlink and sodipodi:absref for the same image - seems like unnecessary duplication and chance for bugs. Effects|Modify Path|Color Markers - In .46 it's giving a weird warning message box (maybe it is being fixed) and does strange things like accessing the sodipodi full paths (see above). This effect has always seemed to be a kludge since stroke color should be applied when end markers are chosen in the object|fill & stroke|stroke style dialog Effects|Render|Grid - This is confusing. the right grid and guides are in document properties. I used the effects grid by mistake, then couldn't adjust it - had to undo. If the Render grid is for fill shouldn't it be under the object|fill & stroke |fill pattern Open Icon - the blue folder color is very similar to the old save icons (with blue floppy disk) thus, I keep clicking the wrong icon for save - the open folder color should be tan (manila). Object|Fill & Stroke|Fill gradient pattern - trying to use the awesome gradient tools more and I find there is an inside out gradient but not an outside in gradient and I can't figure out how to switch it. This also applies to left-right vs right-left (including the gradient adjustment tool) - this can be worked around by flipping the object but that's kind of kludgy. Finally here's a perfect patch opportunity for a newcomer wanting to get involved: Object|Transform|Scale - switch default scale proportionally to checked - this is a simple gtk checkbox setting

If there are a finite number of values possible, then you could constrain the values of the slider. Same with italics. How does Inkscape actually handle all that though? By distorting the fonts to hell? (something I don't really have a problem with, as long as it doesn't cause the memory usage to go to hell because handling of long text always seems to eat up my memory like no tomorrow right now?) Speaking of that person's handy slider thing, I don't suppose anybody is going to implement it anytime soon? (a pity, because it's real handy. One-click value adjustment. Somebody should really make that widget)

UI proposal for text in shapes

Well, work on the vector brush interface is just about done, so I've tackled another thing I'd like to have (though it's not as significant): proper flowing of text into shapes (chart items in particular). At first I thought about making dedicated chart shapes, which have an automatic text box at the centre (or defined alignment position). Then I thought about adding the functionality to existing shapes. Though it still doesn't address the question of non-predefined shapes. So, the simplest way in the end is to add the functionality to the text toolbar, so that it can be applied to any shape. http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/1162/textinterfacelk4.png Note the grid by the way. Whoever thought of it first (not me, but I don't remember who. It was proposed for some other Inkscape feature though) is genius. You can align the text to: - top-left - top-center - top-right - middle-left - (you get the idea) Why this proposal? - because the align grid eliminates the need for calling up the bulky align dialogue all the time when doing chart items. The current flow functionality always starts at the top-left corner, unless I'm missing something. - because the padding means you can use the actual shape as border, instead of having to manually make a smaller version and stuffing the text into it. As for "weight," it'd go like this: if for a style (say, Italic), there is no font for that weight, they the implicit weight value stays the same, but Italic takes on the next closest value. The explanation to the user is that "Italic with Bold" and Italic with Ultrabold" look the same. And that's about it. A possible alternate interface is that Italic gets drop-down value boxes and Bold next to it gets a drop-down horizontal slider. The other options still get stuffed into a drop-down.

Knotholder C++ification

Hi all, in rev. 18775 I committed some changes to C++ify the knotholder-related classes (this was made necessary by my LPE-integration work). Basically, I just rewrapped the existing functions as methods of the new classes KnotHolder, KnotHolderEntity etc. Although the changes were quite straightforward, there is a chance that some code got lost in the process, so please watch out for any regressions!! The main change to be aware of when writing new knotholder code is perhaps that each knotholder entity (which among other things encapsulates a visual on-canvas handle) should now derive from the "general" KnotHolderEntity class and override the virtual functions knot_(get|set|click) which are responsible for the actions taken when the associated handle's position is read/set or when the handle is clicked. Similarly, each item-specific knotholder class (like RectKnotHolder) now derives from the general KnotHolder class, and in its constructor the necessary KnotHolderEntities for all required handles are created. Note that a KnotHolderEntity must currently be explicitly created using the create() method (i.e., this does not happen in the constructor).[1] I'd welcome any comments because although it works well, it still seems slightly awkward to have a new class for each knotholder entity and each knotholder. Did I miss anything and is there a more elegant way to organize things or is this indeed the way to go? More on my other and yet-to-be-committed work in a separate email. Cheers, Max P.S.: Known issue: LPE PointParams are currently broken and they cannot be edited on-canvas. I hope to get this fixed very soon and then the cumbersome edit-on-vanas button will disappear, too. :) [1] I know that there used to be a good reason for this but it may be the case that due to some later refactoring it's not necessary any more to have it this way. In any case, I left it for now because it slightly declutters the declarations of the derived classes. Please tell me if you want it changed.

I have seen an article (in the Beautiful Code book that Google sent me as a SoC gift) about runtime code specialization/compilation using C# in order to optimize code. I was thinking about using similar things to optimize our SVG Filters code but I don't know whether this kind of thing is possible in C++. C# can run bytecode generated in runtime. How could that be achieved in C++? I also have seen an article about a library for C++ that seems to do exactly this, but the lib is non-free: TaskGraph (http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~phjk/Software/TGL/) Is there a free-software lib for this? NEW : LPE stacking

Hello, Our student project is now finished. Thanks to our mentor Johan, our work is now in main trunk. For us it is a real pleasure to see that. Our goals were : - LPE stacking : Check it out - LPE for groups : has already been committed - LPE envelope : we created 2 deformation effects, the first one is "Envelope", the second is "Lattice" and is based on the d2sb2d object from 2geom. They are not designed for the same use. Indeed, while the lattice offers an accurate deformation, this deformation is only determined by control points. It also allows the user to move inner control points, which can't be done with the Envelope deformation. The power of the Envelope deformation is the absolute control of the shape of the envelope. We made lots of efforts to correct bugs we found, but you may find some more. Concerning the school, our teachers told us our project is one of the best of this year. They qualified it of "excellent project" and they were very glad to see our results. I hope this will spur the students on to work on open source project. I intend to continue working on Inkscape, first by "polishing the edge" of our actual work and then by adding things I have in mind. I hope people will like and use what we did. It's fine for keyboard, I suggest just going with Ctrl (or Alt) and the directional keys in text mode. They don't seem to be taken in text mode. Simple right? For the top level interface though, there's the problem of what takes precedence. The drop-down can still be used, but the available values of one would depend on the available values for the other, as you've given with the example of Italics. And I Really doubt people would want to see a check box system. Ah great, I just took a look at the Pango manual. There's a whole series of bold values in there And stretch (and a few other things. What, pray tell, is "font mask gravity"? Well, fortunately, there are only 3 values of Italics: normal, oblique and italic, so that can be the starter value: once you've chosen one of those, the available bold and stretch values pop out, all of which could still be set to a slider interface. A button somewhere could show a matrix of what's available in each mode (...). Have you set a date for when you'll be discussing with the Pango people? It'd be a Lot easier to think up an interface if I actually knew what needs to be implemented. As I've said, keyboard-wise, just go with modifier key + directional arrows. Up-down for bold, right-left for stretch (hey, that's pretty intuitive!). Alright, here's what I've got for now (below is the draft of what I'd put in the wiki): Text-UI-improvements Text UI with space, kerning, path and flow Summary: An improvement of the text toolbar functionalities, adding: spacing, kerning, put-on-path, flow-into-shape (with auto align and padding values) and perhaps more font styles (underline, etc.). All this is done without making the toolbar excessively long via usage of drop-downs. http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5168/textinterface1ix1.png The interface: - (by the way, can the font size value drop-down be made slightly smaller?) - clicking on "Spacing" pops up a temporary drop-down, where you can set the line spacing and letter spacing values. Clicking anywhere else closes it. It is assumed that users would not need to modify these Too often. - the "horizontal layout" button is eliminated to save some space. - more font styles are accessible from the toolbar. However, this may take too much space, so see below for alternate toolbar. - Kerning is also accessed via a drop-down. There you can set values manually, but mouse-over will reveal the shortcuts, so users quickly learn how to manually do kerning instead of having to use the drop-down all the time. A button enables the user to remove all kerning. - the "put text on path" operation is included onto the text toolbar. To use it, you simple select both the text and the path, and click the button. Clicking again removes the operation. - the "flow text into shape" is very useful for charts and comics. However, the current operation is too limited because of the absence of padding and alignment options. More precisions below. Note that I have made heavy use of down-downs. There are two major differences between such drop-downs and popping up a whole Text dialog that makes them hopefully more pleasant to use: - they're Smaller. i.e., less cumbersome. You can access exactly the operations you need without popping up something huge in the middle of the screen. - they disappear as soon as you click elsewhere, so you quickly get them out of the way. - and yet they still allow you to quickly access some operations that are hopefully not Too frequent. Precisions on the "flow into shape" section: - I often make charts, and it is extremely cumbersome to bring up the align dialog all the time just because I want to align a text to the center of a shape. Ideally, this should be automatic. I forgot who first came up with the align grid for Inkscape, but credits goes to him! :) The align grid is as its name implies: clicking on the center aligns the text to the middle-center of the object (as is often the case for chart items and comic bubbles), the top-left option is most use for text boxes. Right- alignment would be handy for Asian layouts. See examples: http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/7099/alignmentbc9.png - Also, the padding is automatic: it basically automatically creates a shape inset of that value, and flows the text into the invisible shape. This way the form can finally be used as the actual border of the frame instead of other complicated work-arounds. - Ideally, the x and y values of padding could be set independently, but it is otherwise not really a problem because in the case of comic shapes, for example, the text would be aligned to middle-center so the top and bottom borders will rarely be reached. Alternate interface: the following interface presents ideas to further reduce toolbar length: http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/8550/textinterface2nb3.png - the text align options would be reduced to a single button with a horizontal drop-down. However, users would probably like to have these options at top-level. - instead of cluttering the bar with font styles, another drop- down could be used. What goes into this drop-down depends on who plans to stuff it: it can be more buttons, check boxes, even complex drop-downs like Open Office (though hopefully not That complex and not That big). This allows users to access a wide range of rare styles as they are made available. - if the x and y padding values of "border" for text flow can be modified separately, then they get grouped into a drop-down as well. Anyway, I know many of you are busy. I'll probably leave this proposal up for about a week, and in the meantime, I'm open to any additional suggestions, or I'll wait longer if anybody gives a more specific date on when they'll have time. As you can see, many of the elements have several possibilities, so there could be additional refinement there as well. :)

RM's pencil smoothing and tolerance UI: anybody?

(apart from the fact that tolerance control does not work from the pref window, but if you can access it from the toolbar, there is no reason to modify it from prefs anymore). This, however: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/188849 Gives me errors (mostly ¡®sp_curve_unref¡¯ was not declared in this scope and similar) Unfortunately I have no experience no the matter. Is anybody else looking into the matter? Better smoothing would be so very welcome.

There's a new bug with preferences that might be the sign of a problem in XML writing. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/236485 I won't have time to look at this until later in the afternoon. However it looks to most likely be a bug in either the PrefCombo class or our XML writer itself (given the recent changes there).

Once again, congratulations on the terrific work done with LPE stacking! I'm having a blast putting all sorts of shapes on Spiro lines (which convinces me more than ever that we should have Spiro lines as a sub-mode of Pencil and Bezier: it'd basically be an automatic Spiro line upon a bezier, minus the annoying bezier skeleton popping up all the time, yes? ;) ) Now that was a blast! http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/2219/lpesqm7.png I tried deforming a text with Envelop by the way but found a bug instead: the LPE dialogue didn't let me do effects with Text so I tried to convert it to path first. Result: Inkscape seems to crash if you select the text then the edit tool (F2). The console says: (inkscape:7044): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid cast from `SPText' to `SPLPEItem' Does the same problem occur to anybody else? I suppose I should file a bug. There is no such bug on 0.46 though, and an exported text can be deformed just fine.

Blueprint for "Geometric Drawing" SoC project

Hi all, to "officially" kick off my GSoC project I have made my initial draft available as a LP Blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/tech-drawing I'd be glad if folks added their suggestions and ideas there (and/or reorganize stuff if it seems helpful) so that I can get an impression of which features are most wanted and how people imagine them to work most smoothly UI-wise. As for coding, during the last 1-2 weeks I did some experiments with LPEs in various directions. Some of these are in SVN already, but overall it was mainly to get an impression of what is already there and what still needs to be done in order to integrate LPEs more tightly into existing tools. In the next few days I'm going to write an email summarizing my thoughts and giving an overview of the first steps I'm planning to take. Ok, This path stuff on win32 has been biting us for a long time now. :-) So I added some code to prefix.cpp to provide a macro, WIN32_DATADIR, that works similarly to BR_DATADIR, so that paths are calculated now, rather than static. So INKSCAPE_EXTENSIONDIR, for example, will always be valid, no matter what the CurrentDirectory is. In fact, we should make sure that CurrentDirectory does not affect resource loading at all. It seems to work OK. If anyone sees an Inkscape win32 build that looks like icons/menus/etc might be missing, please let me know. But I really consider this a short-term fix. Re quest: Calligraphy Tool - Union and difference button toggle

I actually posted this idea on the forum last year (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=304&p=1693) and then being without a PC with Inkscape for almost 7 months meant I never got around to posting here for developers opinions. I believe that most artists, when inking a drawing, will ink a line with many strokes to accurately control the shape of the lines. The problem at the moment is that multiple strokes create multiple shapes. You can hold SHIFT so they only form one shape, but this is awkward when you're using it most of the time. So I would like to see a toggle on the Tool Control Bar that allows for union without holding SHIFT. Likewise I would also like to see a toggle that has the opposite effect and performs a difference. UI proposal for Freehand with automatic LPE (stroke effects)

Hey Bulia! Happy now? :) http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/5248/lpeiz6.png You'll notice that I've submitted several proposals in one. I included them in one mock-up because I needed to make sure everything fits (they seem to, the current version is just about the same size as the toolbar for the selection and calligraphy tools). The 4 components (which ones to be included to be seen are): 1. The Width x base unit component. If you set your base unit to 0.2 pixels for example, you can increment the width of the stroke in increments of 0.2 pixels with just the directional keys. :D 2. I'd like to see Mode there too, because I rather like the smoothness of the freehand tool in Karbon14. Instead of Karbon14's "exactness" and "combine angle" text though, I just called it "smooth", because it's pretty intuitive, not to mention short. :\ I'm not sure if it will get added, but I'd be pretty happy if it were. For those who've missed it, the output of Karbon14: http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/9927/karbon14px5.png (for me, Inkscape's current output is closer to Curve with exactness of 5, not more) 3. The drop-down allows you to chose the behaviour of the line! Either a normal, simple line, LPE with presets, or LPE with clipboard items. Lots of fun, no? You can create a shape and make a true vector brush out of it! (example: you do a leaf shape, you copy it, and you start "drawing" it in various sizes everywhere on the file. Whoo-hoo! How pointless! Moving on) Anyway, the presets drop-down allows you to access dotted lines for normal lines and pre-defined shapes for LPE lines (I'm naming them calligraphy just because. If you name them Live Path Effect or Pattern Along Path, most users will probably not get it...) 4. Finally, I wouldn't have markers accessible from the top-level. Again, this depends on whether people agree or not, but I find it handy when doing charts. Very. Actually, I've just noticed that I forgot the "pattern copies" components of LPE. Aww geez. Maybe for Clipboard, there could be sub-modes that take up the place the Markers buttons would. Icons: - single instance of a small shape - single instance of a shape stretched - multiple instance of the shape along the path - multiple stretched instances of the shape along the path Not as necessary for those pre-defined calligraphy shapes though. Anyway, Bezier would get the same features as freehand, minus Mode and Smoothing.

Toolbox management proposal (presets and tool toggle)

Before I start... what can I submit as "blueprint", and what should I be submitting as "wishlist" instead? Can I use the wiki? If so, what pages am I supposed to save them as? Anyway, most of these will be submitted separately, but they're all only made feasible with a proper toolbox management. So the toolbox is getting cramped, right? At the same time, it's not really fun when many tools are grouped and you have to find each sub-component (case of the tweak tools, I can never remember the shortcuts either). So here's a possible solution, and some possibilities that'd derive from it. 1. Toolbox proposal http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/416/toolbarmanagement1ov3.png http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3712/toolbarmanagement2xb0.png Some features: - There should be a visible icon, as people won't be able to find the feature otherwise. - The icon allows you to access toolbox presets. - Managing a preset is easy, just go to "configure toolbox" and toggle on and off the visibility of any tool, just like with Gimp. - Multiple toolbars may be possible: see mock-up 1. The additional floating toolboxes would have a close button, though not the "main" one to avoid confusion (insert "Aaah! My toolbox has disappeared!" messages). - Some tools could have "grouped" and "separate" options (mock-up 2). Examples: . square, ellipse, spiral and polygon can be options of a single "shapes" button for those who don't use them often. . the individual modes of the tweak tool could be accessible separately: see mock-up. . when 3D shapes are added, they'd also have both grouped and separate options. - Since management is easy now, have some LPEs as tools too? Please? PLEASE??? 2. LPE as tools With a proper toolbox management system like the one above, LPEs can be incorporated as tools when needed. It saves one the trouble of applying one from a panel every time (it Really breaks the flow when you have a lot of lines to do, not to mention the LPE panel takes up a lot of space). This would simplify interface for many LPEs tremendously. You just select the tool, modify any necessary parameters, and draw the paths you need. As soon as you've drawn the path the effect is automatically applied. For example, Spiro lines: you draw your normal bezier, and as soon as you release the mouse it becomes a Spiro line (by the way, any chance for "native" Spiro lines as opposed to a Bezier with an LPE on it?). I actually think LPEs should eventually be separated into categories: - Spiro lines (native spiro lines? Yes please!) - Complex lines (sketch, waves, wide) - Shape generators (gears, stiches, etc.) - Guides (grids, technical, composition guides, perspective guides) - Transform (envelop deform, perspective deform) - etc. 3. LPE tool: Wide lines It's crazy, but it's nearly impossible to find a program that would let you do a nice double-edged line without either: - a tablet (+ very steady hands, which I don't have) - half a dozen operations - or forcing you to switch between panels. It's Really discouraging when you want to do several hundred hair strands. D: The wide lines LPE would be a very simple tool: a few basic shapes are saved. You draw your path. The shape automatically gets stretched onto it: http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9302/widestrokeslpemx3.png There you go, easy-to-edit (direction wise, in any case, I'm assuming that a person doing dozens of hair strands does not care about the exact form of each) double-edged stroke drawn in a single operation with a mouse (or with bezier, whichever). Note: Developers will probably not want to set this as a tool until a proper toolbox management system is in place, which is why I proposed one myself (though I'd be more than happy if a better solution comes along). For this particular LPE tool, you'd have the following entries: - size: size of the maximum. It basically takes the saved shape and adjusts the size first, so you can modify the width of the strokes with just the directional keys. - presets: preset shapes: single edge, double edge with max at 1/2, double-edge with max at 1/4, etc. Users can add their own commonly-used shapes, but the above are among the most ridiculously common ones. - and you can adjust the size with just the directional keys! (though there could be %width options to further tweak the thin lines) If anybody knows how to automatically generate shapes likes these, that's fine too (though let's be honest, including a few files of shapes like these would take up tiny disk space anyway. They're 4 nodes each!). 4. Tool for charts: shapes with text Another feature that probably would be considered too much waste of real-estate without a proper toolbox management. I often use Inkscape to do charts. Having to call up the Align dialog each time (which really takes up a Lot of space by the way) just to place a few text into shapes, and having to realign every time the text is modified, is needlessly tedious to say the least. The auto-text shapes I'm proposing would come as Ellipse, Text, or Polygon. They're simple: place a shape, click on the center and you can start typing away. The text is always automatically aligned to center (or some other option of your choosing). They may have the following features or options: - padding of text to borders: sets a minimum distance between the text and the border. - auto-adjust size: if the text starts to fill the shape, the shape resizes automatically to fit. - the default is for the text to be centered, but there could be other alignments. - linked duplicates: a linked duplicate only conserves the shape, not the text content, so by making a duplicate, when the text in one of the boxes forces one of the items to become bigger, all the other shapes of the same type resize as well. This is for those charts that need all elements to be of approximately the same size. - adding points for connectors: this is simpler for rectangle shapes than for other shapes... you can basically specify how many connector points you want per side (example: 3). Though, ideally, there'd be an on-canvas means to mark points for each side, but I don't have UI ideas for that one... Also handy for comics. It's at least three steps fewer (changing the tool, selecting all then aligning the whole, not to mention it has to be repeated if the text is changed much) for a rather common task, which can translate into a good enough time gain and a much more pleasant work flow. Any comments before I submit? (if only to say which ones should Not be submitted as blueprints, because I'm a bit confused right now)

Resource paths on win32

Hi, wormsxulla alerted me to a problem with the Tutorial menu items not being able to load a tutorial file. The error is something like "can't load file \share\tutorials\blah.svg". Which makes me think that Inkscape has forgotten its path some time since startup. It must have known -during- startup, else you wouldn't get your icons or translations. Has anyone done anything recently to change the path-prefixes, or CurrentDirectory of Inkscape? This was working before. bob

Proposed change of config directory

In discussion today the subject of our preferences, etc came up. The initial comment was "also, i really would love to be able to store the inkscape preferences files in a given location (so, to be able to run two builds alternatively without having to save & rename the prefs files manually). profiles!" Looking into that, it seems that perhaps we should switch some of the mess that is path-prefix.h with the stock calls that now are in glib and that follow the XDG Base Directory Specification http://www.freedesktop.org/Standards/basedir-spec In fact, we should perhaps look over a few of those "Miscellaneous Utility Functions" in glib http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/stable/glib-Miscellaneous-Utility-Funct… The immediately useful function would be g_get_user_config_dir(). One main benefit of using that call is that Inkscape should then be easy to direct to different "config" directories and allow for users to pair different versions of Inkscape with different directories... or different work scenarios with different ones, etc.

[Lib2geom-devel] New HLineSegment/VLineSegment classes and path.h splitting

I splitted path.h in the following files: curve.h (abstract class Curve) sbasis-curve.h bezier-curve.h elliptical-arc.h path.h (class Path and iterators ) and path.cpp in curve-helpers.cpp (CurveHelpers::root_winding) path.cpp (all the previous methods) finally I added a curves.h file so defined: #include curve.h #include sbasis-curve.h #include bezier-curve.h #include elliptical-arc.h #include hvlinesegment.h path.h includes curves.h so existent code should have no problem. The HLineSegment and VLineSegment classes will be useful to represent directly "H" and "V" curves found in the svg path element. I committed all changes both to 2geom and Inkscape. Btw I needed to do a make clean before succeeding in building inkscape correctly, because at beginning CurveHelpers::root_winding was seen as defined more than once. Hi guys, I'm running openDesktop.org, KDE-Look.org, GNOME-Look.org and other websites for Free software. I´m also a longtime inkscape user. I created lots of icons for KDE with inkscape. :-) I noticed that there is no real community site where Inkscape users and developers can share drawing, templates, scripts, fonts, screenshots, new ideas and other stuff. I know there is open clipart, but it lacks the social networking functionality and other stuff. So I created www.inkscapestuff.org . It is part of the openDesktop.org network. So if you have an account on GNOME-Look.org on any other website you can login. There is also a public api if you want to fetch and integrate the stuff into other websites or Inkscape. http://api.inkscapestuff.org I hope this is helpfull for you and the Inkscape users. UI proposal: workspaces (art, chart, technical, kids)

Inkscape doesn't need this as much as some other graphics programs probably do (I'm mostly trying to push it for Krita), but since Inkscape is going to add technical drawing capabilities, it's as good a time to start considering this as ever: Workspaces would basically be a divide and conquer approach against excessive UI bloat. Basically, 1 workspace = one saved set of settings (including toolbox items and tool option settings). UI: in the top menu, you add a Workspace drop-down with the following possible entries: - General - Icons/logos - Art - Charts - Technical - Kids - anything else you can think of (comics, maps, whatever) Click on any entry to switch from one to another. Art for example will emphasize the Calligraphy tool (with eventually several settings possible and separate entries toolbox entries for the tweak tools, so you don't have to dig them up all the time). I'd also like to see a separate workspace for Composition when composition tools are created (the workspace would basically give you composition tools and a few basic drawing tools). In workspaces such as Charts, tool option settings will automatically switch to properties such as "disable scale stroke width." You could also implement hybrids of the shape and text tools so that when you click on the centre of a shape (say... rectangle), you can start typing and editing text directly, and the text will automatically align itself with the centre of the shape, and/or the shape automatically expands when necessary (options available). Normally, such a feature would add bloat to the UI, but within a specific workspace it'd Really save time since the user would no longer be forced to align all the time. Really, this could cut down chart drawing time by half. Technical drawing will emphasize technical tools while pushing back all the non-technical items. It may also have default grids and snap settings. Within each workspace, you can still add another of the existing tools. This could be done either via a "configure toolbox" button or within a "Configure workspace" entry in the workspace drop-down. There, you just tick the tools you want in your toolbox. Workspaces could also make one's life simpler when the following start to get implemented: - animation (I Really doubt most people want the animation features taking up screen real-estate most of the time) - collaborative online work environments and such? The difficulty, of course, lies in whether Inkscape has the architectural options necessary to save and switch settings in such a way. If possible though, it will decrease UI bloat while allowing easier access to certain tools depending on the task (like the sub-modes of the Tweak tool), and could eventually allow some workspaces to have features that would otherwise be bloat in others (timeline bar for animation, maybe mini-icon galleries for if those are needed, and the shape/text hybrids I've mentioned for a chart workspace).

Suggestion: Calligraphic presets - save and edit

Sorry if I'm raising a suggestion that has already be discussed. I've just tried out the calligraphic preset option in the May 22 Win32 snapshot. When you select a preset and make a change, instead of the preset selection jumping to "No preset" can the preset selection remain except with a "*" beside the name (i.e. Marker*)? This will make it easier to identify which preset you had been using before making a change. When you choose to save the changes, populate the "Profile name" (should that be changed to "preset name"?) with the select preset name so you can easily save over it. With these changes you could change "No preset" to "Default" and allow users to easily define their own default. In my work I'll probably create a few presets combinations such as "Slow thin" and "Fast fat" etc. But every drawing will be slightly different, and in some cases the same part of the same drawing might require tweaking of the settings. SVG Fonts: current status

------ If you just wanted to see some SVGFonts rendering, stop reading, this is not ready yet... ------ I have been working on SVG Fonts and I have recently created a coupe of files (src/display/nr-svgfonts.{cpp,h}) to deal with cairo userfont feature (rendering). It is still incomplete code, of course. I am sending a patch attached to this email. It has several issues: * Still doesnt render at all :-P (but the cairo userfont callbacks seem to be called properly, so it is a matter of time&pacience to get it working) * The userfont callbacks are called only once for each glyph. It means cairo is caching my glyphs, which will be a problem when the user modifies them. * It deals with only one <font> declaration (should be extended to various svgfonts in a single document). * Currently I have been trying to test this code by calling cairo_set_font_face (ct, nr_svgfonts_get_user_font_face()); cairo_show_text (ct, "A!@A"); But I do not have a proper place to put this call. I have tried to call if from within nr-arena-render-glyphs.cpp, but it is probably wrong. * Our SVG fonts are not registered to the fontlister nor managed by pango yet. * We still depend on pango integration so that we can fed pango with our cairo_font_face_t* created by nr_svgfonts_get_user_font_face(). This would be integrated with the current pango code that exists in inkscape. * I also admit that I need to study a bit more about how inkscape handles units and how these are fed to cairo. Some units&coordinates in this patch are arbirary guesses. Also, this patch depends on linking inkscape to cairo development branch (git master) which has support for userfonts. That's one of the reasons why this has not been commited to svn yet. I don't want to branch, but I will do it if there's no other option. I would rather prefer to have --enable-svgfonts option in ./configure Can anybody help me with that? I have never done this kind of thing. cheers, Juca

Serious regression!

Hi all, In current SVN I cannot do anything useful with paths! For example, when I draw a simple line then I notice things like this in the XML editor d = m 140,6.21105e+184 308.6,0 Similar things happen when trying to translate a node or a line. Things worked perfectly until maybe a few days ago. I just tested a previous build of may 15th, but that one works just fine. Is anyone else seeing this? Does this ring a bell for someone? Calligraphy Tool

Hi! I'm currently implementing a calligraphy tool, much like the one present in Inkscape, for Karbon as a Google Summer of Code project. I've heard rumors that there is a plan to rewrite the calligraphy tool of Inkscape, but I couldn't find anything in the ml archives about it. If I understood it correctly the main reason is to make it possible to edit the path in an easier way--actually making it possible to edit the path drawn instead of the final shape created by the tool. I've heard the idea seem to be to use pattern on path, but that doesn't seem to me to be very easy to get right, particularly becase in this case the "pattern" depends on the path. I would like to hear more about this, is there any concrete idea about how it would be implemented, or is it only a vague idea? Also, if you have any other kind of advice, please share! =) Thanks, - fela

memory usage

Hi, i am thinking of digging a bit into inkscape code concerning the memory usage. As some might know inkscape is used for rendering tiles for OpenStreetmap (Osmarender) or better InformationFreeway. I have seen inkscape regularly consuming up to 12GB (yes - twelve GIGABYTE) of memory to render a tile. Less complex tiles get away with 300-1200MByte of memory which also is a huge amount of memory. This memory issues reduces the number of machines capable of hosting the "tilesat home" client quite drastically (64bit Linux with 16GByte of ram). I have seen that there way a Memory track for the Google SOC 2006 to reduce the inkscapes memory - What has been the outcome to this? My first imagination is that probably the garbage collector does not kick in because of using inkscape in batch mode or somethin. I ran inscape with GC_LEAK set and found the GC running so its not an issue of not reclaimed memory. I'm currently working on making the title and description fields in the Object Properties dialog work (bug 171024). SPObject already had some dummy member functions to get and set titles and descriptions, so I've turned these into working functions. But I see that there are also dummy non-member functions that are supposed to do the same thing. I could easily implement these using the member functions, but it seems like pointless clutter to have both member functions and non-member functions doing the same thing, so I'm tempted just to delete them (they are not used anywhere, except in the macros SP_OBJECT_DESCRIPTION and SP_OBJECT_TITLE, which are themselves unused). Is there any reason to keep the non-member functions? -- Stephen Silver

Bezier crash in SVN

On two different linux boxes, if I compile from current svn, any use of the pen/bezier tool crashes inkscape. Unfortunately, it seems like there may be stack corruption as the backtraces don't look very useful. Both boxes in question are running Ubuntu 8.04. Would someone else on linux confirm if they're having this problem? (yes, I have two separate boxes exhibiting it, but they're the same distro). Thanks, Josh

making inkscape xembeddable

Hello, I tried to make inkscape xembeddable with the following in main.cpp: int socket_id=atoi("67108897");//xargv[1]); Gtk::Plug w(socket_id); printf("plug id:%d socket_id:%d\n",w.get_id(),socket_id); main_instance.run(w); that is, I just tried to pass a Gtk::Plug initialized with a gtk_socket in another process to main_instance.run(). This doesnt work. Any hints as to why? The context is that I'm working on a patch to allow applications to be xembeddable in an emacs window. This works with other apps than my patched inkscape. The goal in this case is to provide an alternate command based gui for inkscape using emacs. -- Joakim Verona

If you look at the SVG-DOM spec, instead of defining the nodes, they defines the path segments: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/paths.html#DOMInterfaces SVGElement implements SVGAnimatedPathData, which has getPathSegList() and its variants. Path intersection, union, difference code

Hey guys, I'm writing a program that generates SVGs. I realized how big of a pain paths are. Right now I am basically just doing straight lines. The curves that I do have are radii and they're all 90 degree semi circles. Those were a pain too, luckily I stumbled upon http://www.whizkidtech.redprince.net/bezier/circle/ and I can create them in my paths. Anyway, I'm at the point where I need to start doing some more complicated things. I can do these things easily in Inkscape but I'm finding it difficult to generate the path data directly. I am wondering where in the source of Inkscape I can find the routines that do the intersection, union, and difference of paths so that I can incorporate it into my code. Thanks, ~Eric

Accessing individual nodes in a path

Hi, for a couple of applications I have in mind it would be very desirable if one was able to access and refer to individual nodes in a path in a way that is unaffected by future insertion/deletion of other nodes (in much the same way as accessing the members of a linked list is unaffected by insertion/deletion of other elements). How easy would it be to achieve this, especially considering the change of path representations to 2geom? What would be necessary to implement it? Can this be easily integrated into existing path representations? Max

NEW: SVG Output preferences

Hello all, I have exposed the SVG Output preferences in a new tab in the preference dialog. Because of some of the preferences I am not too sure what they do, the tooltip text might be wrong. I hope someone who does know can fix them. The "allowshorthands" option seems not used anywhere in Inkscape code. Does anybody know what happened with this option? (I have commented it out, so it does not show up in Pref dialog) Thanks, Johan

Hi, There are 15 LPE in the combobox currently and at least Lattice Deformation LPE is going to hit 0.47. Then pluggable LPE are coming. Should we start thinking about catogerisation of LPE before the poor little combobox is overpopulated? ;-) Alexandre

JonCruz, this is a really nice idea! One little issue: when xlink:href contain a relatve path, gimp does not find the image. Try to edit externaly the image used in share/icons/feConvolveMatrix-icon.svg Its xlink:href attribute is set to "./ticotico.jpg" cheers, Juca PS: I have seen sodipodi:absref="ticotico.jpg" Doesnt absref stand for "absolute reference"? If so, why isnt it storing an absolute path to the jpg file? Also, I guess, absolute paths in xlink:href are evil, since they often only work on the drawing author computer :-P

I have downloaded http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0805062005.7z yesterday, and tested it. It has a weird problem : no default units are showing, and nothing is showing when I try to use the drop-down menus to select a unit. I am on Windows 2000 - which is known to have problems with drop-down boxes, but nothing can be done at OS level, I believe. Anyway... Has someone the same problem on other OSs? Also, when I enter 10.00 in the box to transform, it becomes 1000000.00, but I can't select "pix". Same in the document properties. isFinite() problem again

Hi all, recently there was a discussion about name clashes involving is_finite(). The problem appeared to be solved but now I ran into it (or something similar?) again. Namely, adding the line #include "live_effects/effect.h" to object-edit.cpp yielded the following compile error: object-edit.cpp: In function ‘void sp_spiral_outer_set(SPItem*, const NR::Point&, const NR::Point&, guint)’: object-edit.cpp:1121: error: ‘isFinite’ was not declared in this scope When I additionally changed the line #include "isnan.h" to #include "2geom/isnan.h" and replaced isFinite() with IS_FINITE(), compilation worked fine again. Thus it seems that there is some kind of clashing between isnan.h and 2geom/isnan.h. Has anyone else seen this and what should be done to avoid further difficulties in the future? Max

NEW: Spiro splines LPE

Spiro splines are a novel way of defining curvilinear paths developed by Raph Levien. Recently, Spiro support was added to the FontForge font editor, and now it is available in Inkscape too. It takes some getting used to, but for certain tasks Spiros have a clear advantage over Bezier curves. http://www.levien.com/spiro/ A Spiro path is defined by a sequence of points, but unlike a regular path with Bezier curves, all Spiro points lie on the path and there are no off-path handles. The curvature of the path is defined entirely by the positions of the points and their types. The path behaves very similar to a springy rod which is forced to pass through the given points and which uses the minimum possible curvature to satisfy the requirement. As such, it feels quite natural and the resulting path is very smooth - with the kind of smoothness you can achieve with Beziers only after much tweaking. To create a Spiro path, select any path and assign the "Spiro spline" path effect to it. There are no parameters. Each node of your path becomes a point of a Spiro path, depending on the type of node: * Smooth nodes (those with two collinear Bezier handles) become curve points of the Spiro path; such points bend the curve but must remain smooth. Note that the length or direction of the Bezier handles of the source path is ignored; the only thing that matters is that the node is smooth. * Cusp nodes of the source path become corner points of the Spiro path. Between two corner points, the path is always a straight line. * Half-smooth nodes - those with one Bezier handle collinear with a straight line segment on the other hand - become "left" or "right" points on the Spiro path which behave exactly the same: they sit between a straight line and a curve and enforce that these two segments join smoothly without a cusp. Note that what matters is the actual collinearity of a node's handles, regardless of the node type that the node has in the Node tool; for example, if a cusp (diamond-shaped) node has collinear handles, it will become a curve point of the Spiro path. For creating half-smooth nodes, use Ctrl+dragging of the node handle to make it snap to the direction of the straight line segment on the other side, or press Shift+S to lock it to that direction. Some configurations of points do not converge and produce wild loop and spirals instead of a smooth curve. According to Raph, "The spline solver in this release is _not_ numerically robust. When you start drawing random points, you'll quickly run into divergence. However, "sensible" plates based on real fonts usually converge." Avoid too sharp changes in direction between points to prevent divergence. Hopefully, the robustness of the algorithm will be improved in future releases. For now, to edit Spiro paths viewing the result in real time, you have to use the Node tool. The Pen tool does not yet allow you to preview a Spiro as you draw, although you can paste the Spiro effect on the path and see the result as soon as the path is finalized. You can always use the Node tool to continue a Spiro path by duplicating and dragging away its end nodes. Also, when you have a Spiro path selected, you can add a new subpath to it with Pen or Pencil if you start drawing with Shift. Thanks to whoever added this, it's fantastic! I have one request though: can you please combine the four envelope paths into one four-sided envelope? It will be much easier to edit this way. I understand that this may introduce the ambiguity as to where one side of the envelope ends and another starts, because the envelope sides may be more than 2 nodes long. But I have a rough idea on how to handle this: Imagine a line that goes at 45 degrees from SW to NE, and imagine that that line moves from infinity in the SE direction. The first node of the envelope path that it touches will be considered the top of the left side and the left end of the top side. Same for finding the 3 other corners. I think it will be relatively easy to implement - and much easier to use than the four separate sides.
