My second bug fix is available now at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/180912 it builds and works just fine but I have one question. I had to include "event-context.h" in "verbs.cpp" and I'm not sure if this coupling is wise to do. Any comments on that? I didn't want to move the special toggling feature for the dropper tool to verbs.cpp mainly due to the space toggling to "select tool" and back would still be in event-context.cpp. During compilation there are a few "unused variable" warnings and other kinds of warnings as well. Within the Inkscape project do you usually file a bug report against this (for keeping track of stuff) and then fix the warning(s) or just fix it? Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Docked Panel heights

I have a recurring problem, which I don't know if I should classify as a bug. Perhaps I'm just missing something. I tend to work with several layers. Usually three, four or five. I also tend to work with several open docked panels - fill&stroke, object properties, align. My recurring problem is that the layers panel tends to compress to a size in which only two layers are visible. If I close or minimize a dock it will always cause the fill&stroke panel to expand unnecessarily - while the layers panel remains too small. Actually any other panel will expand at the expense of the layers panel. If there are more dock than vertical space, and the scrollbar appears, there's still no way of expanding the panel. So, is this something that's it's possible to fix? is it window-manager dependant? (I'm on Windows). Perhaps there's some settings file I can change manually to force it to stay just a little bit larger?

Help needed with ofset

Hi to all, im writina a live-effect that need paralel lines to a SPCurve. I have it working with livarot/path-outline but it give me holes i dont want. [Templates]

Hi! Here is my first progress report. I've been mostly working on understanding gtk and designing some more details about my project. Here is my code branch: https://code.launchpad.net/~slagvi/inkscape/templates I also attach a gui project I made. In fact most of the code responsible for displaying data is already written but if something is not like it should be, please tell me as soon as it's possible. And here is some explanation. I decided to use tags/keywords instead of categories, as it has been suggested by some of you. But there aren't to many keywords or templates, so all the keywords will be displayed in a list. Clicking on one of them makes appropriate templates to be displayed. Of course one template can be tagged by many keywords. Some of you were talking about previous mockups ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/NewFromTemplateSpec) flaws. So I tried to make the interface as simple as possible. All the additional data (like long description, translations, used keywords, license etc) are hidden, as most of users won't need them in the everyday use. It will be displayed after "more info" clicking. What is not in this image, is a short description of the template and its preview. I'm still not sure if preview is a good idea. In most cases it will be just a blank, white page of different sizes... Short description will be added. Procedural templates will have the two first columns the same, the third will be completely different but i will start thinking about it after static templates are ready. Please, tell me if its correct, so I could make it work on real templates. I would also like to ask for a wiki account, as it would be better to update all the templates specification via wiki page, so they would be visible for everybody, all the time. Jan Darowski, Slagvi

extension parameter type

I've looked around be can't find a definitive answer to this question. Is there a parameter type for inkscape extensions that would present the user with a multi-line input. The type "string" presents a single line that doesn't respond to pressing "enter" to generate a newline. Thanks, Robert

Is Inkscape the wrong tool for what I am trying to do?

Maybe sounds like more of a philosophical question that related to development but there are some things Inkscape does that I either don't understand or that work in ways that are counter to what I want. I seem to have recurring problems with object dimensions changing. This is a problem as I am doing what might charitably be described as mechanical drawings, parts that need to fit together with some precision once they're made into physical objects. I can create an object of some specified dimension (100mm by 100mm) and come back later to find that it's 100.107mm or something. I'm going to see if I can find out what it takes to repro this and file a bug against it if I can make it happen. I also don't get why the stroke and dimensions are summed in the toolbar that specifies the size of an object. I generally work in outline view with stroke turned off because I don't like that adding a stroke value to an object also changes it's dimension. I'm slowing coming to rethink this as the stroke being the cutter width or kerf, which is useful but if I then have to contend with shifting dimensions, it gets frustrating. Is there a way to break apart the dimensions of the an object from it's stroke values? Or maybe a toggle that displays the true dimensions and display the stroke and fill for visual reference/clarity? It would useful to work in Normal view and have the colors there but the dimensions then become a problem. If I specify a 3mm opening and 3mm component to go in it, I want those numbers to display while I work. Maybe Inkscape is the wrong choice for me. I like the ease of use/low barrier to entry and getting things done, and the price is definitely right. But maybe I'm making work for myself. -- Paul Beard This space intentionally left blank.

Markers, a note about Rev 12363

Dear Devs, I've just pushed revision 12363, it includes a simple but user-facing change to the markers in the stroke-dialog which puts them all on one line and removes the drop down label. Now looks like this: http://imagebin.org/261038 I decided to keep the label row data for MarkerCombo for posterity, but remove the display function. I also used the hbox which cut down dramatically on lines since hbox use is the same between gtk2 and 3. I didn't compile with gtk3, but I expect it to work. Please let me know if there are any problems you have with the change. I decided to implement to favored design change after reviewing the feedback on a group of design changes for the stroke dialog. Selection and Symbols

Dear Devs, I'm still working on this UI update for symbols. It's mostly working now, with the exception of the UNSYMBOL verb which as originally implemented required a use element be selection which referenced the right symbol. To fix this weirdness, I wanted to try out an idea. What if selecting a symbol in the TreeView on the right changed the currentDesktop->selection too. Then the verb could act on the selected item directly and as an added bonus, there's a conceptual way to select defs and maybe act on them in the future functionality or plugins (imagine a plugin that acted on a symbol, cool). Only problem is, it also creates a bounding box on the canvas of where the group used to be, with transform handles and everything (which was fun to poke to see what would happen). Before I go down a rabbit hole, I wanted to check in with the team about what the best way to select items would be and if defs should or should not ever be selected in this manner (I'm looking at you xml-tree-editor). [Tracing] First steps/progress and some images

Hello ppl, I just finished the task for week 2 from my proposed timeline<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/project/google/gsoc2013/vinipsmaker/48002>. This task was related to create a graph from an input image. This graph will be used by later steps in the Kopf/Lischinski algorithm. I'm attaching a zip file containing 4 input images and a set of output images representing the intermediate steps of the graph generation. There is a README.txt file inside this zip with further information. The next step of the algorithm is to improve this graph further more with three heuristics. Should I calculate a separate 'buf' that is then OR-ed (overlaid) with the 'p' buffer to create that effect ? OR I can create a smaller circular arc and use radial gradient (white at center and transparent at circumference , radius again 20% ) and overlay onto the same surface used to draw the initial color wheel as shown in the picture above. I personally feel, the second option is easier because the first option would require to know how rgb changes when a certain degree of white is added to it. Your views are looked forward to. Ubuntu installation error

Today's Inkscape update resulted in an error on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. If no one else can corroborate problems with today's Ubuntu Software Center Inkscape update then I won't post it on Launchpad. Adding MIME data and type to images in cairo-renderer

Hello, I started to work on a patch for Inkscape to be able to export embedded or linked image in SVG to be exported in PDF with their correct MIME type and original raw data. Current code is exporting JPG file to bitmap file by storing the gdk pixbuf data, which results in heavy PDF files. I am still struggling with the cairo-renderer code to fully understand it. Two bugs related to the issue, I mentionned: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168708 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=612844 Please find attached my patch for a first step toward this new feature. Note, currently it is only written for JPG file. I'll add later a way to correctly work out the MIME type of images. I am now able to add the original MIME data on the cairo_image_surface with 'cairo_surface_set_mime_data'. But apparently the rest of the exporter code is redrawing the surface which causes the original data to be dropped, and the JPG images are still stored as bitmaps in the final PDF. According to Cairo doc on MIME data : "Caution: the associated MIME data will be discarded if you draw on the surface afterwards." I do not find which part of the renderer code is redrawing the image surface. Could one of you help me with this issue which would fix an annoying bug ? Related to that. Hello Vincius, While reading this I came to this thought. How far fetched would it be to instead of square pixels, enable it to turn them into arbitrary shapes? I am thinking of diamonds, stars, circles etc. And when following this line of thought, how feasible would it be to create 4 (or more) layers of color like the old fashioned color separation rasters. No doubt it would be heavy on the machine handling loads of objects, but it would enable us designers to play around with moire and color separation layers. It would certainly be worth the wait of generating this kind of stuff and bring it to a printer. Weighting the pixels colours and resizing the object to that weight should be fairly straightforward. Set these object as <use> clones with the weight of the colour and drop the result in 4 layers with a slight offset (thinking of CMYK simulation here). I don't want to keep you from your task with this fantasy, but it would be way cool and something that would make your pixelation scan really useful to me and probably others. So first set yourself to the task at hand, but maybe if you have some time left and are still inspired you could play around with this idea. In any case thanks for the effort you put into this wonderful application and making it even better. That goes for all people involved in this project b.t.w. Safely mixing C/C++ bindings for GNOME libraries

Hi All, Just a quick note about a common source of build failures (e.g., bug #112274) [1]. Basically, we disable the use of deprecated GNOME library symbols wherever possible so that we can avoid big API migration projects in future. A common problem, however, is that some of the C++ bindings (e.g., glibmm and gtkmm) use some of those deprecated symbols! In other words: Inkscape ----> glibmm ----> deprecated stuff in glib \---> glib \---> gtkmm ----> deprecated stuff in gtk+ \---> gtk+ So, even though we don't use deprecated stuff ourselves, we still need to take a little care with this! The solution is to ** Ensure that high-level dependencies are included in our source before low-level dependencies ** For example, the Glib::Thread API in glibmm depends on deprecated GThread stuff in glib. We will get a build failure if we do the following... #include <glib.h> #include <glibmm/threads.h> This is because the deprecated GThread stuff in <glib.h> will be hidden by the C++ preprocessor. When <glibmm/threads.h> is subsequently included, GThread stuff will therefore appear to be undeclared and we get an error like this: /usr/include/glibmm-2.4/threads.h:142:11: error: field ‘gobject_’ has incomplete type /usr/include/glibmm-2.4/glibmm/threads.h: In member function ‘GThread* Glib::Threads::Thread::gobj()’: The solution is to do the inclusions in this order: #include <glibmm/threads.h> #include <glib.h> This now compiles correctly because when <glibmm/threads.h> itself includes <glib.h>, it temporarily re-enables the deprecated stuff, uses it, and then disables it again. A couple of additional notes: 1. There's actually no need to #include <glib.h> after one of the <glibmm/*.h> headers... it is already pulled into our source by the glibmm header! 2. Remember that you have to avoid *any* inclusion on <glib.h> before using a <glibmm/*.h> header. As such, it's safest to just put the C++ headers at the top of any source file: i.e., // Gtkmm/Glibmm headers first... #include <gtkmm/aaa.h> #include <gtkmm/bbb.h> #include <glibmm/ccc.h> #include <glibmm/ddd.h> // Now include Inkscape stuff... #include "ui/dialog/wibble.h" #include "ui/dialog/wobble.h" 3. Outset/Inset problems - bug or not?

I have Ubuntu 12.04 and Inkscape 0.48+devel r12347 Two weeks ago I installed the nightly build from Inkscape, then decided against it and uninstalled/reinstalled Inkscape from Ubuntu software center. Since then the outset/inset function has generated incorrect results for some shapes. dealing with broken external functions

After being told that the changes to a bug report aren't valid*, I decided to look into how hard it is to simply take broken functions off the menu, from the user perspective. > To remove the plt conversion as an option, I found that simply moving the Contents/Resources/extensions/plt* files to a subdirectory took them off the menu in the save dialog. That's because the sampling grid does not match the data grid, and since there is no reconstruction filter, values between data points are undefined. SVG vs. EMF+

Hi all, I'm having a look through EMF+, which is the metafile type corresponding to GDI+, to see what is in it that would add SVG features not currently representable in EMF (vanilla GDI). So far... These would be worth having: 1. Objects with colors that are RGB + Alpha. GDI uses only RGB and mixing operators to emulate opacity, the mixing operators are complex and I did not implement 99% of that in the present EMF input/output code. 2. Gradients. EMF has gradients, but the rectangular gradient record is apparently toxic - I have yet to find an application, including from Microsoft that can accept one. The majority of programs that write EMF files work around this by writing scads of tiny rectangles to emulate the gradient. (By majority I mean no programs, other than the ones I wrote, generate EMF gradient records.) Possibly the EMF+ gradients are not toxic so input/output of SVG gradients can stay as gradients and not have to be emulated. 3. Expanded hatch patterns (up from 7 in GDI [essentially] to 52). 4. Custom line caps. It is not clear to me how many of the other features in GDI+ have SVG equivalents. For instance: 5. Compound lines. GDI+ can draw a line with what is essentially a row of pens of various widths. Define a pen with a narrow stroke, space, wide stroke, space, narrow stroke, and draw a rectangle, and the result is a set of 3 nested rectangles, with a fat central stroke and thinner strokes inside and outside of it. Can SVG do this? I'm thinking one would have to import this in a loop, and create the rectangles one by one with the appropriate "sub" pen. 6. Clipping regions can be combined with XOR, UNION, INTERSECT and so forth. However, I do not recall in the present EMF output that clipping information is passed into the driver. Rather I vaguely recall that it was applied many levels above and the clipped shape is what is sent to the output driver. Other than for clipping there does not seem to be a way to create compound regions using these operators. I don't think SVG has these operators for general shapes either. Inkscape performs these operations on paths, but just puts the combined path in the SVG. 7. Graphics containers. Apparently the point of these is to provide a way to segregate high cost operations (like antialiasing) from low cost ones (a normal draw). So on one screen set up different containers and the quality sensitive ones are sent into the high cost container, while everything else goes into the lost container. For a Metafile this makes no sense, we are not interested in real time performance, and all objects should remain high quality. 8. Gradient curves. GDI+ does this by specifying an array of points (the curve) and a corresponding array of colors, and then some rules about how to interpolate colors. (Fill is another story, that uses a brush with a defined gradient.) I could not find an example of SVG stroking a gradient curve like this, other than by breaking it down into a series of separate line segments of slowly varying color. One thing that is definitely not a step in the right direction EMF to EMF+, at least in terms of dealing with the resulting metafile: 9. Remarkably few EMF+ objects and records have a fixed size. There are so many "optional" and "variable" fields that most objects and records cannot be represented with a struct. There were some complex EMF records, as for image storage, that were like this, but most EMF records had a fixed memory layout, so one could map a pointer in memory to a struct, and then just reference the values in that record by field names. It would help if Inkscape could produce a pdf file in the PDF X-3 format. That gets around the CMYK problem insofar as many printers have new printer and prepress software (e.g., LSI, Brandt-Doubleday) that will handle the conversion automatically from RGB to CMYK. I have a faster, SIMD IIR filter implementation, but have accuracy problems

All, I have ported the IIR filter implementation to use SSE intrinsics and have achieved a 2.5x speedup so far. But I'm having accuracy problems for large blurs due to using single precision instead of double. I've attached examples outputs that blurs a box with several sizes. For sigma=120, the annoying mach bands start getting noticeable. At sigma=200, it looks very bad, and at 350, you might as well use it as a sharpen filter :) This is the first graphics application I've seen where single precision isn't enough. Is the reason due to the recursive behavior of IIR (more accumulation of error) ? Basically, for large blurs (stdev > 100), 24 bits of precision isn't sufficient and you end up getting very annoying mach bands. For sigma = 100, the filter coefficients are: b[0] = 0.00000387430191040 b[1] = 2.96391582489013672 b[2] = -2.92843437194824219 b[3] = 0.96451467275619507 If I add b[0] to the other terms last (b[1] + b[2] + b[3]) + b[0], (earlier, when I added the b[0] term to b[1], the accuracy was even worse as expected), the alignment of the operands in binary is approximately: 1.00000000000000000000000 0.00000000000000000100000 meaning the addition loses a lot of the b[0] term's precision. Can anyone suggest how to proceed next and how useful you think this speedup is? (for me it's a moderate improvement because in my comic, I use marble and brick textures for the walls and floors - I also vectorized the turbulence generator). I would like to avoid using double precision since SSE supports only 2 doubles per operation instead of 4 floats. The things I thought about of trying next are: 1. Use int32 arithmetic (that would add 9 extra bits of precision) 2. Use 4 taps instead of 3. Would this really help? I don't know much about IIR filter design. Dear Sebastian Götte and Tavmjong Bah, I'm working on these two items most keenly too, I would like to participate in code review as well as design review for the blueprints etc. The codebases for both items are not super big so I'd like to make sure we don't start committing over each other since the GSoC projects are nominally forked. I have a UI change for symbols which is waiting merge. I'm also interested in the design of the connectors since I know we all have different ideas about how it should be done (elements vs attributes, children vs groups). Discussion on the GSoC proposal - Attribution of work/metadata/license changes

My project proposal didn't make it in to GSoC but I may be able to work on this anyway during the summer, though no "assigned" mentor for it. I'm now curious about the comments I got on my proposal [1] and would like some elaboration on them. The proposal is mainly about feedback in the statusbar but after reading John Engelen's comment [1] and thinking about it for the last weeks I'm leaning more towards the idea of actually collecting all the relevant metadata and presenting it in the document metadata settings tab. What do you think about this? I read on the Inkscape wiki about "Eliminate limitations" [2] when creating new features, if I understood it correctly it relates to Nathan Hurst's comment [1] about trying to take my idea further. The functionality of tracking metadata/attribution/license information is very specific but a good place to start and eventually how to generalise it will become obvious in the future. Is there anyone that has any idea how it can be generalised? Relocating it didn't work for me, nor does checking out a new copy work. This simply means there will be no news on the website until we move to the new website. Hello Inkscape Developers, I was able to convert the bzr repo into a git repository yesterday using https://github.com/git/git/blob/master/contrib/remote-helpers/git-remote-bzr What I'm suggesting we do is to create an "Inkscape" orgranisation e.g. (https://github.com/wikimedia) on Github and put up a read-only git-mirror of Inkscape's sources (which will be updated periodically, say once a week). I think this will surely increase the "visibility" of Inkscape's sources and the Inkscape organisation, in general, and we may be able to get new contributors. A lot of other projects seem to do this, even though actual development happens elsewhere. IIRC, cloning a git repository is a lot faster, so, this might help people submit patches quicker. Regular development can continue in Launchpad, as usual. Is this a reasonable idea? Samuel

Hey guys, I need help, I've not had anyone yet test my instructions for setting up the new website locally and I could do with a test or two. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WebSite (see development section) I want to make sure the instructions are clear and correct enough for _anyone_ to do some development, even if they have only html or English language skills. I've just updated the instructions with the resetcms script which downloads the cms from staging and installs it locally. This is a good test of our backup and restore process for all the content we're making on the staging website. Please do keep up the good work on the staging website, we need more people to get on and add a page or two, or look over what we have so far. Translations for cms content is open right now, so if you do translations you should be over there translating things! I want testers to be gentle as it's her first time out in public, but I'm trying to get the new website into a release-early/often setting so we can start getting this thing ready for inkscape.org[1]. Hi, I found inkscape the best open gfx app. All the more gelastic it was that it's not possible to draw the popular black line of 1px width in true plain black color without having to load an extension (pixelsnap) which did not function in my poor case. Could we have both the smoothness (?anti-aliasing or underlying between-pixels grid?) and the crispyness optionally available. I guess, in general this preperfect-feature comprises all cases in which thin-lined crisp geometric figures are wanted. Cheers, Julius

Hello Martin, I'm interested in porting parts of the old website to the new one. Have to agree with Shlomi though. fontsize is a tad smallish, especially on my 1920x1200 screen. Maybe this is something that could be made adjustable by the user (settings) and have a bit higher default. [SVG WG] Variable width strokes

Hi Johan and others, The SVG Working Group discussed variable width strokes last night. A number of questions came about how it should be implemented in SVG. As we have this implemented via the Power Stroke (PS) LPE it would be interesting to get some feedback from Johan and others about these topics: 1. How should the position of the points where the widths are defined be described along the path? PS uses a real number where the integer part gives the node (numbered from the start of the path) and the fractional part the fractional distance between that node and the next node. The WG seems to favor defining the position using a property via the distance along the path defined either as a percentage of the total length or in absolute units. The argument is that then the same property could be assigned using CSS to multiple paths (e.g. a large number of lines that represent hair). PS uses absolute user units. The WG seems to favor using a percentage of the stroke width. This would allow quick adjustment of the whole path thickness. 3. Hi! Maybe you find interesting how Synfig implements the variable width along a path. Initially Synfig tied the width controls to the stroke points so you can vary the width from control point to control point of the stroke. This is useful in many cases but produces problems for those cases where the stroke has many points and the wanted width variation is smooth from the start of the stroke to the end. Also, when the number of control points is small and you want to have many control widths you become forced to add more unwanted control points to add variable width there. So we came in with the Advanced Outline: http://wiki.synfig.org/wiki/Advanced_Outline_Layer The advanced outline responds to those questions this way: 1. How should the position of the points where the widths are defined be described along the path? It has two options. a) Homogeneous: position of the width control is total length stroke based. b) Non Homogeneous: position of the width control is based on the number of beziers and inside each bezier it is length based. So for three beziers (4 points if the stroke is open) a position of 0.5 means the middle length of the second bezier. But for four beziers (5 points if the stroke is open) a position of 0.5 means coincidence with the third control point of the stroke (regardless the length of each bezier) 2. How should the widths be defined? We use a multiplier of the global width of the stroke. A value of 1.0 (neutral multiplier) will use the global width of the stroke. Negative values are allowed. 3. Should the widths be symmetric or asymmetric about the path? We use symmetric. It is easy to extend to asymmetric. 4. Should negative numbers be allowed? Yes 5. How should smoothing be done? We use a 5th degree spline smooth function in linear combination with a linear interpolation. An extra parameter (smoothness) allows to change between full smooth to linear. Questions about end-cap and line-join We have discontinuities in the tangent depending on the interpolation smoothness value. When interpolation is full smooth its tangent is continuous. When interpolation is linear, tangent is not continuous. One latest addition non mentioned in the wiki yet, is the inclusion of a internal parameter of the width control: lower and upper boundaries. Those values (default lower=0.0 and default upper=1.0) defines how is the width control placed along the stroke. This solution was applied when we found that the width control points moved when you extend a stroke in drawing mode. Extending the stroke implies in the worst case to increase the number of bezier points and/or the overall length of the stroke. In those cases it is impossible to keep the width control points in place, so we added the lower and upper boundaries to adjust those values when the stroke is extended to keep the width control points in place form the point of view of the old stroke (before extend). So when you extend a stroke, the width control points boundaries are modified from the defaults to the calculated values to keep them in place. For example, one width control point that is placed at a position of 0.5 from the point of view of the original stroke (at its middle of a 0.0 to 1.0 boundaires), when the stroke length is doubled, the width control point position doesn't change (it remains to be 0.5) but the boundaries goes from (0.0, 1.0) to (0.0, 2.0). This is very important when you deal with device inputs where the user doesn't create the stroke in one time, but in several and consecutive hand drawn strokes that are joined together in a single object. Maybe you wonder why do we want to have a single object after the extension of the stroke: keeping one single object allows to animate the width control position along all the extended stroke without troubles, and at the same time it keeps the width control position in place after extend. Finally, Advanced Outlines supports dashes with custom tips for each side of the dash segment and variable width within the dash segment length. Expand a Widget Gtk2 and Gtk3

Hey guys, I've been struggling with getting my designed UI into code and I need some help. I have a Gtk::Toolbar with a few buttons a space widget and then a few more buttons. The goal is to set h_expand on the space widget in Gtk2 and push the two sets of buttons to either side. The code for Gtk3 is fairly strait forward but C++ isn't letting me call child_set_property and set_expand doesn't do anything; so I'm stuck. Code: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5655252/ P.S. Cairo will only actually draw the pixels once you call cairo_stroke or cairo_fill. Before then, the target surface is not modified - only the context's path information is. If the decoration is a different color, you need to call this operator twice - once for text and the second time for the decoration. One more remark; I don't think implementing this functionality "manually" is the right approach. Pango, the text layout library we're using, has built-in support for decorations, but for historical reasons we are not using the layouts generated by Pango. The proper way to add these features would be to pass along the Pango layout down to the display tree level and then use Pango-Cairo to display it. Seeking ideas on layer handling with symbols

Hi, I'm currently working on a GSoC proposal to add PCB layout and schematics editing capabilities to Inkscape (it's not as hard as it sounds). In a PCB layout, you have a number of (physically stacked) layers (one copper layer on each side of the board, possibly multiple copper layers *inside* the board, green solder mask on both sides on top of the copper layers and white print on top of the solder mask for markings etc.). I'm currently unsure on how to map these layers to SVG. It appears obvious to map these to Inkscape layers/SVG groups. This does not work too well however, since all components on the board span multiple layers (pads for the pins on the copper layer, cut-outs for the pads on the solder mask and a package outline and part id/number on the silkscreen). If a component is moved, all parts of it (on any layers) need to be moved simultaneously, and in fact, normally it does not make sense to even select the parts of a component individually. My problem is that this would essentially require cross-group groups, i.e. groups whose elements can be elements of other groups not part of the group, which clashes with XML's tree structure. Currently, I have two and a half ideas on how to address this issue: 1) I implement PCB layers as something different to Inkscape's layers that is just denoted by an object property (I don't like this). This attribute would be pretty similar to the z-order attribute that will be include in SVG 2. 2) I find some way of "linking" multiple groups on multiple layers (I don't like this either, it's easier but more "hackish"). I'm currently leaning towards the second option since I can imagine the first will require a *lot* of work (though I will still look into that further). Perhaps you have some ideas on how this could be implemented in pre-2.0 SVG. Thanks, Sebastian

Dear Josh, I have been working on the bug #1060837: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1060837 (Please go through the link to know about the bug) The bug involves depicting the CMS values of a CMYK using Color Space on a scale of [0,100] rather than the default [0,1]. I have up till now setup un-editable GtkEntry Values which shall depict the values that the artist wants ( on the 0 to 100 scale ). Hi, I'm using the latest snapshot builds of inkscape (one on Skydrive) and after upgrading from r12292 to r12322, my Wacom Intuos 5 now has major lag problems. This isn't the 1st time I've had lag. Previously, I've encountered this problem in both the Windows x64 versions of Inkscape and Gimp. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696148 Somebody suggested a workaround of downgrading libcairo from 1.12 to 1.10, and that worked. But I see that even the no-lag r12292 version is using libcairo 1.12, so it now seems less likely that Cairo is the root cause of the lag. There only seems to be 25 changes since r12292, but I'm not that familiar with Inkscape internals yet. Can someone suggest what could've went wrong? Thanks, Yale

I have up till now setup un-editable GtkEntry Values which shall depict the values that the artist wants ( on the 0 to 100 scale ). Another GSoC'er - New From Template

Hi! I'm Jan Darowski, form Poland, studying IT at the Warsaw University. Launchpad, IRC nick Slagvi. As for now I've developed few apps (mainly with Qt), but couldn't find a nice way to get into open source development (although I use it all the time). And here appears GSoC. I chose Inkscape because I often see many cool, free projects, which have even better functionality than commercial ones but for some reason they aren't as popular. I think that it's caused by less friendly, simple interface. I'm attending an Inkscape Internet course on my university and find it really nice and interesting project, which in many places can be improved. Later on I saw, that there's a very strong, active community what I find very important. I chose to implement an old New From Template idea, as it looks like something improving reception of inkscape (especially for the new and very advanced users). It is also a well documented and described idea, so I believe that not only I find it important. Of course I already did required two patches, trying to choose these related with the subject. I already have some ideas/plans how to implement this idea but first I want to know if there aren't any more suggestions from the other developers. And here are the the questions for you guys: 1. Is it still as important idea as I think? Maybe there is something more urgent what you can suggest to me? 2. As the ideas blueprint suggests ( https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/new-from-3. template-dialog) there has been some work done about this idea but I cannot find anything about what has been done and where it is. 3. Is there any support for the procedural templates written? That's another mentioned functionality I cannot find. Is it so important? Without very deep research in this direction I think It can require a lot of work to do it from the beginning. Maybe even to much as for the GSoC, as there are also other things to be done during this period. As for now, I'm thinking about focusing on making a simple dialog, which covers current functionality + searching by tags + categorizing templates (things from wiki http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/NewFromTemplateSpec). As there will be a nice "New From Template" dialog, maybe I should also add one for creating templates? It shouldn't be very difficult, just another type of save dialog, with some additional template-specific fields and adding them into svg file.

Perfect bound cover extension on Windows

I have since found the messsage. In essence it says I must download and install http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/lxml That in turn requires that I download using a package called "pip" which I don't have. Or I can build from source, but that requires that I have libxml2 and libxslt including header files. This is indeed a man-sized can of worms to get a function that should be included with the base system. I also have a Debian partition up which has Inkscape 47 on it. If the "pip" path fails I will try upgrading Debian to wheezy which may have a newer version available. GSoC project proposal: Inkscape as an electronics CAD tool

Hi, I'm Sebatian from Berlin. I have used Inkscape for a few years now and I have a project proposal on how to make Inkscape a full-blown electronics CAD tool with only few special-purpose additions. I have written some software before[1,2,3] and contributed to other open-source projects[4,5]. I have registered a blueprint with my proposal at [6]. The spec can be found in the wiki at [7]. Here is the overview from the blueprint: Currently there is no nice open source electronics CAD tool. The largest competitors are gEDA which I find awkward to use and KiCad which I find even more awkward to use. Since a schematics editor is not much more than a special-purpose flow graph editor and a PCB layout editor is in fact nothing but a somewhat crippled vector graphics editor with some special-purpose features added I think it is very promising to modify a general purpose vector graphics editor to support the few special-purpose functions additionally required by an electronics CAD tool. GSoC 2013: Depixelizing Pixel Art

Hi Inkscape Developers, I'm Vinícius dos Santos Oliveira and I'm majoring in computer science at Universidade Federal de Alagoas, Brazil. I'm not very skilled, but I use (and like) the Inkscape software for some time ( http://vinipsmaker.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/ ). I have experience with GUI programming and C/C++/Python/..., so I think I can develop to Inkscape. I'll try to fix some "easy-fix" tagged bugs next week. I thought about an idea for a GSoC proposal and I wanna know your opinion about this idea. Inkscape currently use potrace for all raster-to-vector conversions, but potrace isn't good to work with pixel-art. Some reasearchers developed an algorithm that perform better with pixel-art: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/kopf/pixelart/ My proposal would be to develop an C++ library implementing this algorithm and: 1. Create an cli program using this library 2. Integrate the feature in Inkscape using this library The main tasks to implement this algorithm are: - Construct a graph - Reshape the graph with the help of some heuristics defined in the paper - Extract the spline curves - Optimize the curve - Convert the B-Splines curves to Bézier curves The library should export the curve as B-Splines and Bézier curves. This way, if Inkscape gain support for B-Splines curves in the future, it should be easy to convert the filter to generate the B-Splines instead of Bézier curves. After finish the proposal, Inkscape should have another option to convert raster images. I'm already used to a lot of programming languages and programming paradigms and programming skills won't be a problem for me. Graphs wouldn't be a problem for me either (I have some background on data structures and related). I would take more time to master B-Splines and Bézier curves, but I don't think this should take more than two weeks. If I finished this proposal fast enough, I could even add extra features like add an option to pre-proccess the input with hqx filter before send it to the cited algorithm. Text drawn to screen where? (Pango splitting text fields excessively for other output.)

Layout-TNG-Compute figures out glyphs, spans, etc. for screen output. But when and where is that information actually drawn to the screen? I have been working on EMF, R->L output and various other things, and discovered that Pango sometimes really goes to town breaking text fields into smaller "unbroken spans". These are necessary for screen display, since it must find a glyph/font pair for each unicode character, but some of the results are overkill for the "print" output functions, which typically need to know where the resulting glyph is, but most likely do not really care what (substitute) font was used. That is true for EMF output, and presumably for the other supported output formats as well. Example, when the following 7 unicode characters are entered, all in Arial font: (a) (grave accent) (b) (acute accent) (c) (circumflex accent) (d) pango_itemize breaks it into 3 pieces: (a) (grave accent) (b) (acute accent) (c) (circumflex accent) (d) because Arial (on the test system) did not have a glyph for circumflex, so it fell over to DejaVu Sans. These 3 smaller pieces are then fed one by one into pango_shape() and etc., until the information is ready for the screen. This is all well and good for screen display, but the same graphics structure is also used for "print" output (other than SVG, I think). The second fragment, in particular, is likely to be mishandled by whatever reads the file output, since that is a Mark, nonspacing unicode character, and should always follow a normal character in the same text record. In the print context the font substitution used within Inkscape is irrelevant for the construction of the output file. In all likelihood no or a different font substitution may take place in the target system. Breaking text strings that are in one "tspan" in the original SVG, down into several in other output formats, is certainly not the desired result! To work around this problem layout-Compute would need to keep two sets of books, as it were: setting up the fragments that eventually go to the screen, and the simpler set of fragments that go to print. The glyph<->character map is the same, but the print spans are merges of 1 or more screen spans. Inkscape would need to make a distinction between drawing to the screen, and drawing to a file, and send the appropriate set of spans to the appropriate target. Near as I can tell, at present it just sends the same structure to both destinations. (This effect is not seen with SVG output, because nstead of working from the screen's graphics structures, it just saves the stored XML.) Regards, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Please comment on it. I thought about pop-ups, but when I copy something between documents or imports something I don't want to be interrupted with an annoying pop-up therefore I've resorted to the statusbar. Perfect bound cover extension on Windows.

When I installed Inkscape 48.4 on two different kinds of Linux and tried to use the: extensions-->render-->perfect-bound book cover template I got a message that I had to install an additional piece of software to use that function. This is no big deal to experienced linux users but might be for Windows users. So for the 0.48.4 version of Inkscape.exe, does this situation also exist with respect to the perfect-bound book cover feature? I have a Windows 7 partition up but haven't been able to convince it to talk to my router yet. And the handy-dandy router install disk is for an earlier version of Windows. (Sound familiar?) I can't just download the inkscape.exe via linux and move it over to the Windows partition. (Tried that trick too. Wouldn't execute.) So I can't test it myself. If anyone has tried the combination of recent inkscape, installed on Windows, and the perfect-bound cover feature I would appreciate hearing from them. -- John Culleton Wexford Press

While debugging I found that the dumpAsText() method is sensitive to some legal, but not very useful SVG constructs. Constructs Inkscape created for some reason or other. Hello everyone. I'm new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and talk about why I'm here. I developed a Python software for creating artistic and functional printed circuit boards. It's open source (Apache License) and based around JSON, SVG, and Gerber output (the latter for lack of any other more manageable alternative). I use Inkscape to draw the routing, and to move instantiated components around (everything else is created from information stored in JSON files). This might need to change, as I'm realising that in order to make PCBmodE more useful to other people, it needs to be more tightly integrated with Inkscape. So I'm here to discuss the possibilities and hear your thoughts, advice, and criticisms. Hello! I am Mayank Dehgal, a student from IIT Bombay, India, currently a second year undergraduate in the Computer Science department. I am interested in working with Inkscape for GSoC. I have used Inkscape to present the designs of 2D games and animations I have created. I have been thinking for long about using the generated svg file for creating a 2D game engine, or for animating certain rigid bodies. Since the svg file is an xml file, we just store the information of different structures in the file. I have been using Box2D ( 2D physics engine) lately, and we just declare different bodies with their positions, gravity, density, shape, so that the physics engine uses the information and runs the simulation. I plan on adding various properties to the svg file through additions in the User Interface, and then using it with Box2D to create simulations and 2D games. Please give me feedback and suggestions regarding this idea. Thank you.

Hey Devs, and more specifically Super Ted, I'm trying to come up with a script to process some of these merge requests more effectively. I've been keeping a trunk branch handy which is re-made each new pull so I have something up to date enough to work from and not have to wait for huge builds. So, I thinks to myself, maybe if I used bzr correctly and did a `bzr branch trunk bug174678 --hardlink`, ran the autogen and then hardlinked over all the .o files from trunk, I'd have a reasonable starting point. Turns out it's not that simple and make just wants to rebuild everything in the new branch anyway. I'm guessing it's checking some prerequisite's date stamp and I'm just not making sure it's touched. DBus api signals

Hi, I have to produce a "plugin" for Inkscape. Python extension functionnalities are not enough for what I want to do so I came to try the DBus Api. With this one, I can communicate from my plugin to Inkscape but not in the other way. The only implemented signal is "ObjectMoved" but I need to know when Inkscape modifies a node, adds an attribute or things like that. I look after the dbus extension code and it seems that the signals that I want are described in proposed-interface.xml and are not yet implemented. Is there any way to achieve what I want to do? Is there further development forecast for dbus extension? Is this possible to propose eventually patch? Thanks for the reply

GSoC 2013: Unit Handling

Hello, My name is Matthew Petroff, and I am an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University majoring in Physics and Computer Science. I've used Inkscape for about six years, and have also created SVG files by hand. I've been involved with FOSS for a few years now, namely Hugin [1] and, more recently, FontForge [2], mainly as a builder. For Google Summer of Code, I would like to improve unit handling in Inkscape. It is my understanding that Inkscape's current unit handling is scattered across the code base in various locations, and from personal experience, I know Inkscape's unit handling could use improvement. To start, I would refactor all of Inkscape's unit handling into one centralized location. I would then extend this unit handling to allow for easier use of "real" units, e.g. millimeters, both on the document wide level and for individual objects, as has already been outlined in a blueprint [3]. Hi there, I removed those c++11 parts now and went on with c++ifying the SPEventContexts. These were even easier to convert, I should have started with them. As far as I can tell, Inkscape did not get any slower and memory consumption even decreased a bit. At least that's what /usr/bin/time -v inkscape -z share/examples/car.svgz -e car.png says. question about memory leaks

HI all, Sorry if this is a noob question, but i am trying to build the tarballs for inkscape from trunk, and am running into issues. When trying to run "make dist", I get the following errors: make dist-bzip2 dist-gzip dist-zip am__post_remove_distdir='@:' make[1]: Entering directory `/home/.../source/inkscape' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `mkinstalldirs', needed by `distdir'. Layout compute question, Mark, nonspacing, Hebrew

In one test case for Hebrew the word "Shalom" was split so that the first two characters were colored black, the second two green. This test cases uses the Hebrew vowels which are Mark nonspacing characters, other than the coloring, it looks like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Shalom.png There are 2 such vowels on the first character position (furthest right), and one on the third character position. After this SVG is read in, when it is written out the 4th character (05dc) is eaten on the output. The debug method was enabled and it shows the problem (below), where for the first span all 4 of the UTF codes are present, but there are only 3 glyphs where there should be 4. The second span is as it should be. The layout code is migraine inducing, but perhaps one of you can suggest at least approximately where within it this glitch might be found? Symbols UI Changes

Hey devs, I'm going to be making two changes to the UI for symbols. 1. Firstly, we move the Symbol to Group and Group to Symbol out of the Object menu where it's out-of-context and into the symbols UI itself. This means the 'Current Document' symbols will be visible when you add and remove symbols. (I'll also be fixing it so the Symbol to Group works on the symbol selection and not just a use element) 2. The second piece is to move the two preferences out of the symbols UI and into the Inkscape preferences. Edit > Preferences > Interface > Symbols. Paste attributes

Hey devs, I've been tracking this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1107924 Dragging symbols to the document 'pastes' them in. The 'use' element created points to the symbol definition. But it also adds width="1" height="1" to the element which is erronious. sp-use.cpp sets width and height to 100% (1.0 + SVGLength::PERCENT) and I thought that might be the culprit, but it's not effecting these use elements. So I traced the copy process, outputting the xml at each step through the copy process. The use element created and passed around never has a width and height attribute and setting one gets overridden. So I'm at a loss, the element from the paste process acquires attributes by some magic I can't yet trace. Any help understanding what's going on would be great. Best Regards, Martin Owens

The first answer here describes the use of extern "C" quite well: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1041866/in-c-source-what-is-the-effect-of -extern-c It is used to prevent name mangling so you can link together e. g. c object files and c++ object files. I think in Inkscape it isn't necessary at all as the c++ compiler is used for all the compiling. Markus

Preserving shapes better when deleting nodes

Hi, I've been using Inkscape quite a while now for tracing cartoon-like images. The paths usually end up having way too many nodes which is a problem for the vinyl cutter I use to plot these images. I tried using the simplify path tool but it makes the path usually too simple and changes the overall appearance. Therefore I use the path tool (F2) to select unneeded nodes and delete them, but this leads to curves which poorly resemble the original curve, so I have to adjust the curve by hand which consumes a lot of time since I have to clone the path first so I can see the original shape and adjust the simplified curve to fit it better. I made some examples, see attachment demonstration.svgz. I also formulated a target function for minimizing the distance between two curves and calculated the partial derivatives of this function. I'm pretty confident I will be able to use a gradient based method for finding the two control points which lead to minimal distance between the original curve and the new one. Thoughts? As far as the text-tool drop-down is concerned, I totally think it should steal the interface Krita uses to manage paint modes. Mock-up: http://i49.tinypic.com/eq1fep.png Fonts would be stored in categories, and within categories, you can check a box to make the font appear in the "favourites" category on top. Uncheck to make it disappear again. This could solve pre-rendering issues: fonts will only render once you open a category. I'm not a font expert so I don't know how they should be categorized though. I'm aware that Inkscape doesn't have that widget, but it totally should, especially for managing the fonts drop-down. I'm looking at the icons in the inkscape trunk branch and have a few questions: 1. Do we need png and svg versions of the same icons? Don't all target OSes support svg now via gtk? 2. Is pango_icons.svg used at all? I can't see a reference to it in the code. Even though the icons in the file are nicer than those in inkscape IMO. Are these transitional? 3. Where is the swatch/color picker icon currently used for the the symbols icon. I wanted to change the symbols dialog icon. Make something better, but can't find it in the icons.svg or any of the other files. 4. The filter effects icons, are these temporary placeholders? is anyone working on better replacements? 5. Hello all, I am currently pursuing my undergraduate studies in Computer Science and Engineering at Delhi Technological University , New Delhi , India and am looking forward to be a part of GSoC 2013. I have been using software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop since before high-school. With the interest I had in programming and algorithms, I always wanted to contribute to such software programs. FOSS caught my attention in my second year of college and I began delving into Inkscape as it provided me an opportunity to get inside the workings of a real software almost similar to Illustrator. I have fixed one bug till yet: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/773288 *I intend on implementing a Recolor Artwork Tool that shall allow: *1) Managing Color Themes with one go. 2) Enable editing many objects' colors on-the-go (simplified interface). This site should give some idea about what I have in mind- http://colorschemedesigner.com/ Thankyou to ScislaC for pointing this site out and lessening my burden of explaining what the tool would do. The credit for the idea goes to Inkscape's developer wiki which urges the contributors: '*Don’t please the artist—BE the artist'* and in my view, this tool shall be a boon to all of Inkscape's heroes, our artists. I have played around the gimpcolorwheel.c file and studied Cairo's drawing structure to paint the entire Hue Wheel in my experiments. A screenshot (result) is attached for the mentors' and advisors' perusal. Also, I have added a 'Recolor Artwork' option in the 'Object' Menu to house the final tool widget. As an almost rookie for such a project, I hope the discussion with people adept with industry methods and experience in digital designing will definitely help me chalk out finer details of how to structure the tool keeping in mind the intricacies of Inkscape's codebase. Fix for "easy-fix" bug "Tweak tool using wrong cursor", a few beginners questions

I have pushed a fix for https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/587729 to http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~christoffer-holmstedt/inkscape/lp587729-tweak-… 1) What do I do now as I don't have commit rights (I assume) to inkscape.dev? 2) During compilation of my changes I got an error "pixmaps/cursor-tweak-move-in.xpm:38:35: warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to ‘char*’ [-Wwrite-strings]" for all my added cursors but I couldn't see any difference between my cursors and the original ones. I assume that I get the same errors during a full compilation for all cursors but I might be wrong here. 3) I added "--fixes lp:587729" to my bzr commit command but when I pushed to launchpad the status of the bug wasn't changed automatically, I expected it to change to "Fix committed". The wiki states that I should send an email to the dev list if I want a wiki account, so here is that email . I just followed the compiling instructions at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingUbuntu on a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS and I had to install the package "autopoint", which is not listed on that wiki page, to get the autogen.sh script working. GSoC 2013 - Embedding of license and attribution metadata

Hi I'm studying Master in Software Engineering at Mälardalen University in Sweden and looking in to the possiblities of participating in GSoC 2013. I've used Inkscape for several years as a user and want a deeper understanding of how c/c++ is used in larger projects so I feel that Inkscape can be a good project for me. Enough about me for this time, as Johan Engelen posted in an earlier conversation [1] I will try to spend my time fixing bugs instead of "fine tuning" my GSoC application. So to my suggestion and questions. For the last weeks I've been in contact with Jonas Öberg a Shuttleworth Fellow running the project "License and attribution metadata" [2,3]. With start from the 1st of June 2013 they will begin their work of developing a library for storing license and attribution metadata in digital works. My suggestion for GSoC 2013 is to use that library in Inkscape. There are both benefits and problems that comes with trying to use a library while it's still in alpha/prototype stages so what do you think about this? 1) Is this work of any interest? 2) What do you think about developing the additions to Inkscape as GSoC project in parallell with creation of a library for this? Hi all, I have been successful in making a menu-item in the *Object* Menu of the name *Recolor Artwork*. Just as an exercise I have copied the Fill and Stroke .cpp and .h files and translated the entire dialog to under the name *RecolorArtwork* rather than *FillAndStroke*. Logically this should mean that the entire dialog box shall now be replicated under the pseudonym of * RecolorArtwork*. To add a menu-item I edited the *menu-skeleton.h* file's variable * menus_skeleton[]. * I added " <verb verb-id=\"DialogRecolorArtwork\" />\n " under " <verb verb-id=\"DialogFillStroke\" />\n " This handles the display part of the task. Now what remains is linking the action and verb. Grids - new coordinate system

Hi all, We have to change the coordinate system used by grids in XML. I think it is the only thing left that has the inverted coord-system in XML. I changed it in the guides improvements branch, and it works fine. The only problem is: grids of old files will show wrong, they are not "upgraded" to the new format, because there is (yet) no way to distinguish old-style from new-style grids. How should I go about this? It is relatively easy to fix it manually for each file, but I understand it is an annoyance. Cheers, Johan

Introducing myself and GSoC 2013 student participation

Hello, Thanks to you all and the rest of the Inkscape community for making such a great project. I am a masters student at Australian National University. I am currently part of a course on FOSS run by Andrew Tridge and Bob Edwards.This boosted my huge enthusiasm in contributing to the FOSS community and the software I use. For this course I will be making a report on the study of the Inkscape(inc. culture, governance, etc), as well as a report of my work. The experience from my Bachelor of I.T left me feeling like I didn't know very much about real software development. Studying your project has really helped to open my eyes and I want to contribute as much as I can. I sent my first patch recently to fix the too small default window size, which is at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/830663. Thanks to ~suv and JazzyNico for testing it. It has not been accepted and is still being discussed. I am looking forward to more recommendations and suggestions on how I can improve the patch. At the mean time, I will try to fix more bugs and send more patches. Finally I greatly enjoyed my short time with inkscape and hope to participate in GSoC as well. Cheers, Jiabao

apply and remove transform ?

I am certain this question has been asked; i found discussions online but no viable solution. Is there a command to "solve" the transform derivation (or shift), store the derivation as constants, and remove the transform directive? This KIND OF happens with paths, when you "simplify path". But that's a big "kind of": "simplify path" actually removes nodes. I'd like to keep all my nodes but get rid of the "transform" attribute (after integrating and hard-coding its effect, in constant values). Possible? Please help! thanks!

Compile Errors

Hi all, I added a new .cpp file in the ' ...\inkscape\src\ui\dialog ' directory. For reference I was using the fill-and-stroke.cpp for creating a GUI for my code. I named the tool say 'XYZ'. Upon compiling XYZ.cpp along with inkscape the following errors cropped up: Make error line 301: problem compiling: src/ui/dialog/xyz.cpp:31:1: error: 'XYZ' does not name a type. Can someone help me in understanding why this cropped up ? I am deriving a class of the name XYZ under the UI->Inkscape->Dialog namespace. Well, no, on linux, sorry. But I don't quite get the problem. There are lots of people who seem to have managed to make a recent version of gcc work on mac os. Of course you'd have to recompile all the necessary libraries from scratch when switching to a compiler with a different abi. It should work quite well, although I still have to figure out what to do with those "rdf:RDF" and "inkscape:grid" nodes. If you want to try it, please add a CXXFLAGS="-std=c++11" to your configure line ;). Who of you is currently working on the guides-improvement? Inkscape helper apps.

I am asking this question on the devel list because those who know the answer are likely to hang out here. I know the helper applications like Scribus, Gimp, TeX and Java are needed to use the full power of Inkscape: Scribus for CMYK conversion, Gimp for extended manipulation of bitmap images, TeX for the Latex extension, and Java to support Jessylink. Am I missing any helper apps here? I would include both those called by Inkscape itself and those external to Inkscape but also considered very helpful. What about Imagemagick, Ghostview etc? Since I use Slackware linux I have a pretty complete set of helpers already. But what about the Windows and Mac users? -- John Culleton Wexford Press

Yes, I just used this "polymorphic function pointer" std::function<SPObject* ()> for the factory, this can be replaced by a normal function pointer. Then there's one nested exception and some nullptrs. GSoC 2013 student participation

Hello, I'm Damjan Velickovski (dummyan) and I want to apply for this year GSoC on this project. I study Computer Architectures and Networking at St. Cyril and Methodius University. This year I became interested in computer graphics and that's the main reason why I choose Inkscape, also the fact that is a well established vector drawing program. Our faculty program emphasise programming in java, so my knowledge of C++ is intermediate. But I already started learning those things that I can do in java but not in C++ and I sure learned new things as well. My key objective with this participation is to sharpen up my programming skills, learn how to work in team and of course make a contribution to the open source community. I use linux about 6 or 7 years and I think it's finally time to pay back some of my moral debt :) I have read the blueprints and their comments and I haven't really decided for what to apply. Glyphs that return no vertical extent information???

In trying to clean up my libTERE text reassembler code so that it works properly with R->L languages like Hebrew I found that the Hebrew glyphs mostly contain no useful vertical extent information, even though this information is present for English language characters. So far only one tested font actually had this vertical extent information for these glyphs - Verdana. The glyph does eventually render OK in Cairo, but not being able to figure out the vertical extent of the bounding box really makes it difficult to reassemble complex text into <text><tspan> structures! Is there some trick for pulling these vertical extent values out when the font itself appears not to hold them? Perhaps a function that will calculate them from the glyph instead of reading them from the font? The only other approach I could think of was to fall back to looking up the vertical extents for some glyph that does have these values, like "A", and applying them for the missing Hebrew glyph. Hello, Thanks for your continued development on Inkscape. Due to all the format wars this the best and only tool i can use for my self-funded Silverlight game. But I'm having a problem. We have been stuck using version .47 and it was crashing allot randomly, but the xaml worked, in WPF and silverlight. finally got .48 to work, it is stable, but i get a problem, its now using PathFigureCollection for any simple path. here is the issue i am stuck with now. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11331549/why-does-this-xaml-path-crash-s… . MSIE wont draw it. Could you please revert so that the XAML does without the Figures= ? Or set it as an option if you are taking it somewhere needed?. So far i see only one object in the collection anyways. I just downloaded the latest daily build from Skydrive and still see the Figures.. This may affect RT, phone 8 and other developers. Another smaller issues i have: -thinner line weight on paths do not show in xaml. ( this worked in inkscape .47) i work around it by scaling 10x more on my drawing, then import at 0.001 scale. -groups do not show in xaml( this is still broken but i just ungroup for now) we only use simple paths, layers, strokes, and sometimes groups. if my game makes any money after this 4+ years development i will donate. preview in filter extension

hi list, i am trying to program a python filter extension and i need to know if the script is called for preview or for the live run. i already found out that the script is called when the preview checkbox is checked and when the apply button is pressed, but i found no differences in the data delivered to the script when called. in the c++ code both calls are different, but from the python side they seem to have the same effect. are there any differences? or is there any other way to determine what was clicked? thanks in advance, TimeWaster -- Save a printer manufacturer. Im attemting to fit identical, the position of 2 Geom:Points, one generated by Inkscape::UI::controlPontPosition::allNodes() and a cast to Inkscape::UI::Node->position() and the other with first_segment()->initialPoint(). The values need to be the same but one return 154.13750999999999, 406.75175261718755 and the other 154.13750999999999, 645.61042999999995. Whith other node/segment the values are -74.927954, 664.71799261718752 and -74.927954, 387.64418999999998. The value with initialPont is similar -rouded- than in the SVG. I test to pass to the other desktop->w2d,desktop->d2w, and normaliza(), with no luke. What im doing bad? By, Jabier.

Inkscape developers, I'm using a custom Windows x64 Inkscape build and I'm getting huge lags (1/2 second or more) when drawing with my Wacom Intuos 5. Rather than submit a bug report and waiting, I want to debug and fix it, if possible, myself. Can someone give me a clue how to approach this? I was thinking of recording time stamps for input events in the event handler functions (e.g. sp_dyna_draw_context_root_handler() ) but if the input event handler isn't the bottleneck, I could measure time stamps of when the strokes show up on the screen, but in which function would I find that? Also, I don't think the processor is a bottleneck because I looked at the CPU usage when rapidly scribbling and it only uses 1/2 the throughput of 1 core. Also, is anyone out there interested in Inkscape for Windows x64? I know the extra memory available doesn't help much, but believe that there should be a speed boost from the extra 8 registers and SSE2. If there is demand, are there any build issues that I can help with? I think I read from previous posts that the main work was to switch to MingW64. I'm currently cross compiling Inkscape on a Linux host. Yale

Windows 16-bit colordepth memleak

Hi all, A colleague today found Inkscape later than 0.48.2 unusable because of a huge memleak. He was using it in 16-bit (remote desktop). We found that on Windows 7, Inkscape 0.48.4 and trunk are unusable because of very rapidly increasing memory usage it quits because of no more available memory. Steps to reproduce: 1. set Windows color-depth to 16-bit 2. start Inkscape 3. zoom in and out repeatedly (mousewheel) 4. watch the used memory increase very rapidly in the task manager Might be easy to fix this, perhaps some of the blitting/display code assumes a 32-bit buffer? I've added it to the know issues for 0.48.4 and 0.49. (I remember that earlier versions of Inkscape would not even start when using 16-bit colordepth.) Thanks for looking into it! Cheers, Johan

Right to left language support, is this intended or a bug?

Here is a test file: http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/pub/pickup/hebrew_decorations1.svg It starts with two Hebrew sentences (R->L) and ends with the English word "overline" (L->R). It is all overlined (text-decoration.) So the text is supposed to look like this: __________________ --3--><--2--<--1-- The first Hebrew sentence is longer and the second one has two words of three characters each. (No browser I tried rendered this correctly, hence the long verbal description.) Anyway, when an attempt was made to print this to an EMF file this is what was observed: 1. Each Hebrew character was sent as its own string. 2. In "style" both "direction" and "block_progression" computed values were set to 0. 3. The one English word was sent as a string (not character by character). Again, the direction and block_progression were set to 0. Naively for this sentence I expected to see two calls to PrintEmf::text(), the first with all of the Hebrew and text direction nonzero, and the second all English and direction zero. Only the second part of that was correct. Before I try to "fix" it - is the current character by character behavior for R->L text intentional? (Not having tried to fix it yet, it could well be that this is a side effect of some of my changes.) On a related note elsewhere, for instance, when rendering text to the screen, Inkscape leaves mixed L->R,R->L tspans in one piece - and then does some very strange things when one tries to navigate with the arrow keys within them to edit the text. Would it perhaps not be better to break up all mixed direction tspans that hit TNG compute into 2 or more tspans, each of which is either all R->L or all L->R characters, and for good measure, has the direction="rtl" and "ltr" tags set to match? Doing it the current way all sorts of other pieces of Inkscape have to know about bidirectional text. Without the tags being set other code cannot in general determine the tspan direction quickly - put 20 leading and trailing spaces around the core text, and the direction is not determined until something other than a space is encountered. Reduce all such tspans to homogeneous pieces in the TNG compute code and the rest of inkscape only needs to know how to handle the extra direction information for each tspan - which is much simpler to deal with than bidirectional text. Guides Improvement and GSoC 2013

Hey guys, I would like to work on improving the guides system in inkscape, including adding a dialog listing current guides, and allowing for easier adding/removing/editing of guides. I have never worked with open source software before, but I have used inkscape from a user point of view for a number of years, and hope that gsoc will be an entry point for contributing to the project. I know that gsoc has not announced their accepted organizations yet, but I wanted to get started as soon as possible (to hopefully increase my chances of acceptance). I have a couple of questions real quick: The project seems to have been started by a user a while back ( https://code.launchpad.net/~john-glassmyer/inkscape/guides-improvement), but he didn't take ownership of the spec, so I assume that this project is still available to work on? Also I understand that inkscape has a "two patches" rule before a user is given commit rights. How big do these patches have to be, and should we try to relate these patches to the project we are looking into proposing or is it better to try to fix a bug that is listed as more important? Spent some time today using valgrind to squish some preexisting bugs that were affecting the experimental text-decoration draws. This is not a lot of fun, since under valgrind it takes almost 4 minutes before inkscape will accept input events well, and 20 seconds or so for it to shut down again. Anyway, so far, I found that sp_style_read_itextdecoration in style.cpp was broken several different ways and so rewrote it. That made text decoration turn on reliably. (Not render perfectly, that is another problem.) Will post the fix for style.cpp in bug 172133 later. I am currently stuck on another front. These two issues: ==4258== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) ==4258== at 0x810F401: SPClipPath::show(Inkscape::Drawing&, unsigned int) (optional.hpp:273) ==4258== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) ==4258== at 0x810F617: SPClipPath::setBBox(unsigned int, Geom::OptRect const&) (optional.hpp:273) are in "optional.hpp" which is apparently a file transiently created during the build and then deleted. Talk about a moving target! Which files are the basis for the creation of optional.hpp? Other than dropping print statements into the basis files, how does one go about debugging a transient file like this? Is there some way to get a listing of "optional.hpp"? AutoExport Script

Hi all. I wrote a small script to help me automatically export portions of an svg file as individual images. I posted about it on the [inkscape forum]( http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=13682), and was recommended (by Jelle fwtw) to post it here. The script can be found at https://github.com/oxalic/AutoExport. Basically it takes an svg file, finds any groups that are named with a form of "prefix:name", and exports those as "name.png" "name.eps" and "name.svg". The script should be fairly well documented and very easy to extend. It is nice because it would be fairly simple to incorporate prefixes in the filenames, and it can export nested things (I use it to export both compound images, and scheme images in chemistry). It is a bit hackish (take a look at how I had to implement the export to plain svg's!), so if y'all have any suggestions or comments I'd love to hear them. Also more about my use case etc, the readme should cover most questions.

As soon as the factory is replaced, the SP classes can simply be combined with the corresponding C classes, removing GObject from the derivations. Hi, I'm new here ;) . As I really like Inkscape I thought I'd help out programming. In order to gain some insight I started with a janitorial task, I put the virtual function calls in the SPObject tree into C++ classes. I found the procedure of porting the tree to C++ described in the wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CPlusPlus This works quite well. In the attached patch you can find those "virtual pads". At the moment I'm turning all the other functions into real member functions and I'm playing around with a new factory that is independent of glib. Tell me what you think about it. Markus

Something special about Cairo glyph draws?

There is something strange going on related to glyph draws through Cairo which I have not been able to figure out. Hopefully fresh eyes will spot the problem. (Overlaps are not filled.) The reason this is bizarre is that when the code is modified so that the glyphs overlap each other (easy to do, just change the "g->_ctm" in ct.transform() to "aff") the glyphs do not XOR against each other. Use a string like "XO" to see this. Instead they just draw over each other, as one would expect for all of these draws. I thought the XOR might have something to do with the ct.rectangle() call, so made an alternate version where the rectangle is first converted to a (closed) PathVector "rectpath" and then this is done: ct.transform(aff); // ct.path(rectpath); // Unfortunately, this also had the XOR effect. I am puzzled. Where is the XOR effect coming from? More to the point, what is special about the glyph paths so that if they overlap there is no XOR, but a glyph and a rectangle or another path do XOR? By placing a DEBUG print statement at the top of _renderItem() one can see that this method is called twice for every string (actually <tspan>) in the document which is updated/changed. I suppose the XOR effect might have something to do with that, but it does not really make sense either, since the glyphs are drawn as many times as the overlapping line. Gtk+ backend target

Hi All, Why do we explicitly check for the Gtk+ backend target in configure.ac? The resulting $gtk_backend_target variable isn't used anywhere except for deciding whether to link the -lX11 library or not. In fact, this seems unnecessary too, because gtk+ reports whether it needs -lX11 via pkg-config so we should pick up the dependency automatically. Our method of checking the backend target isn't supported by gtk+ 3 in any case, so can we get rid of the test? AV

Dear devs, Need some advice on my suggestion of recolor-artwork tool based on Illustrator's similar tool. *Advantages of the tool: *1.) Lets you manage interdependence of colors. For example, you select a circle and a rectangle respectively colored RED and ORANGE. For some reason you want to port the whole 'tone' to something cooler. You select the two objects on the canvas, lock their nodes on the color wheel and rotate the rays of the objects to the blue wedge area of the wheel. Now with a single step you can manage the color tones and relationship of different objects. This should prove very beneficial for designers/artists. *My Blueprint: *[image: Inline image 1] *Steps:* 1.) Get the colorwheel drawn using the source files "gimpcolorwheel.c" as reference. 2.) Get the GUI for selected objects (based on the XML Tree) [First prototype will only handles solid colors] 3.) Josh, I subscribed to the mailing list, but for some reason I haven't been getting emails from it... I tried to resubscribe, hopefully that works! Tav, that sounds like a fantastic birthday party! I've done quite a bit of looking into the internal workings of SPObjects when I created the objects dialog, and I think I have a decent understanding of how everything is updated, but it does get very confusing due to gobject obscurities... If it would help out, I can take a closer look into this and start documenting the process so that it will be easier to work with in the future. When I created the objects dialog patch to submit upstream, I went through my code, added comments, reorganized, and fixed as many bugs as I could find. The blurring crash that you're referring to is most likely due to a linked-list error, which I also encountered in my testing and hopefully fixed in the patch. I also reworked styling the buttons, so the up/down arrows should hopefully now have tooltips (although it may still be unclear as to what they do, so a more descriptive tooltip may be needed). The random hiding of objects with drag-and-drop appears to be a weird side effect of the workaround for supporting multiple items. To fix this, I added a flag in the patch which gets set if the mouse-down event occurs over the visible column. When the mouse is released, if this flag is not set the visibility toggle will not be triggered. In my tests, it seemed that only the visibility column was being triggered, so I didn't add flags for the other columns, but they could easily be added if issues pop up in the future. In the latest Ponyscape release, there is an issue with re-selecting items when they've been moved via drag-and-drop that causes a lot of assertion errors (which may be the errors that you were seeing). I store the source SPItems in a vector, which I iterate over and move on a drop operation. I was also using this vector to select the items post-move, but they no longer referred to the correct SPItem (due to how SPObjects are built and moved). In the patch, I now store the ID's of the items before they're moved in a different vector and use that for fetching and selecting the items after the move. Moving items between layers and into and out of groups is currently only able to be done through drag-and-drop... It would be possible to add buttons similar to the XML editor, but that may overcrowd the UI. This functionality could also be added to the right-click menu, which might be a better solution. You can already group and ungroup items using the right-click menu (along with clipping and masking items). If you notice anything else or have any suggestions on improving things, let me know and I'll take a look into it! I am planning on doing the same process of reviewing, commenting, and bugfixing my code before creating a patch for the tags dialog, and will definitely be sure to keep in mind all of the points you brought up about it. In the top revision of Ponyscape I have already added the ability to rename objects in the tags dialog, and I will look into the rest of the items that you have brought up! I may eventually move Ponyscape development into a branch on launchpad... For the time being I am using a repository on a local server, which has been working out so far, but I can definitely see where it would be beneficial to have a public branch as well. The number of lines to draw can be get by tree ways: 1.- Changing the default value when alter the number of lines, im not sure if can be done, but is what like more. 2.-Search in the SVG the value of the widget number of lines in the first filter -last applied- of this LPE 3.-By preferences. Hi to all. Im thinking in a aditional LPE based in Sketch LPE. The goal is: A simple LPE whith few widgets maybe only this one: Select the number of lines to draw. When you draw a pen stroke it create this numbrer of lines whith a random seed position of nodes. but cobering all path whith random ofset at start and at end. The finality is made a speed sketch tool, in the current Sketch LPE the calculations to made a rich "Sketch" slow the drawing speed because you neeed a lot of lines to cover the full path. By this way only need to calculate a delimited number of lines. This is like more lines more beauty but more slow, few lines faster redraw. Who thik this feature interesant? think is very easy to make, and it can go whith a filter Sketch layer, to select the number of lines and if you want Spriro or ?BSpline. This aditional live effects are because a live effect in a layer hide the filter effects of his children. But isnt a problem because is only to ?starting sketchs. It can be done in the pencil tool, but with Live Effect isnt "destructive" and maybe user can hide the effect, alter a path is more easy, and maybe more easy to made, but is only my opinion. Y apply some fixes that Mauro give to me. *Simmetrical, smooth, auto, node toolbar now only give or a 0.3334 weight BSpline or a CUSP node. *Fixed a bad brehaviour continuing existing curves *Pencil mode work in bsline mode *Fixed widgets of LPE Mauro tell me about a problem/feature scaling some nodes and moving them, they reset to original position, it happens in the devel version? Now the widgets work better, i have some problems whith the button widget, some times is necesary press two times to update the scalar list. Mauro, coment me is a good point apply custom weight only to selected paths, whats is the best way to have a vector of selected nodes/points insde a LPE? By, Jabier.

Hi, guys: This just reached a critical "must-express" pressure in my head: I've been periodically, over the last few years, missing this (yet non-existent?) feature for a dropper, in Inkscape (as well as in other image editors). An enhanced version of a dropper, which does the following: It's able to "suck up" the attributes of an object (similar to what it's already doing), and then "drip them out" onto one OR MORE (multiple!) objects, as the user wishes. The sampled (sucked up) attributes could stay in the dropper buffer, indefinitely... until the user replaces them with another dropper "suction". In addition, it would be nice to expand the number of attribute types the dropper can disperse, and, of course, let the user check/uncheck the attributes that are being copied and dispersed. [x] fill [x] stroke color [x] stroke thickness - absolute units [x] stroke thickness - proportional/adjusted to the transform magnification (not sure about this one, just a thought) [x] opacity [x] alpha [x] a variety of other attributes, like roundness, etc. (limited to certain objects, perhaps) [x] funky, crazy user-assigned things, like "reduce to same number of nodes" -- OK, maybe i'm going too far here... [x] I might be missing many many other great additions to this list; i'm sure others would suggest more stuff. ------------------ So... with this superdropper I'd be able to click on a path/object, and then, holding down some drip/endow control key combo (like, "Ctrl+Alt[+click]", or some such) click on object(s) TO WHICH I WOULD PASS these attributes — as many objects as I like, in succession..., without re-sampling (without sucking in attributes) ------------------- It seems like code-wise, it shouldn't be that difficult. -------------------- I was checking out the 0.48 dropper, and it is already capable of copying either the stroke color or the fill color, distinctly, and there's already a button tool bar to go with it. (But it doesn't seem to be able to do a series of "drip-outs" onto many objects.) -------------------- As far as I know this is my original idea, and I'd like to "bequeath" it to Inkscape and other GPL-licensed applications. So, just to be sure no commercial app hijacks this feature (the concept/algorithm) and claims it as its own (and prevents open-source apps from acquiring it), I hereby declare the afore-mentioned feature to be under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, v3, as spelled out by the Free Software Foundation. Again, this is just in case it hasn't been developed yet, although i'm actually hard-pressed to believe that it doesn't yet exist somewhere, and in case there's a looming threat of some commercial-venture grabbing the feature before it gets integrated into some GPL'ed app (hopefully into Inkscape) ------------------------------ Thanks!

I'm not new to programming but definitely rusty. Coming back into it for the first time in c++ has been a bit jarring. I am looking to create a couple tools to experiment with and was wondering the best way to go about it. One will use a lot of functionality of knots but I'm not sure as to how hard it would be to subclass the knot and remove (what I believe is) the element constraint. (tell me if i'm mixing terms here). Any leads to a good subclassing refesher (i.e. what includes I really need in the subclass etc.) would be extremely beneficial. Thanks.

Hey all, I submitted a new "report" based around a patch submitted from the primary developer of Ponyscape (an Inkscape derivative project focused on making life easier for artists interested in creating My Little Pony fan art). Check out the first new patch he has submitted upstream at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1157024 I've talked with him a bit and he's really doing some good work at a rapid pace, but as we know, we don't have the same leeway upstream to add features that may change on a regular basis. So, he sees Ponyscape as a good testing ground to let things have some time to mature and ripen and then he will submit patches upstream. He also doesn't want to step on any toes or anything. That first patch is for a long awaited feature. If others would be willing to test and do some code review, it will help us to establish a tighter relationship with Ted. He's already met the 2 patch requirement and has commit access, but he really wants feedback and to get things right before stuff is committed. My guess is with the amount of divergence and level of changes he makes, this patch vs direct commit paradigm might be around for a while (he has a lot of irons in the fire for new/improved features). First window opens at UL corner of screen (Linux)?

One of my test machines is Ubuntu 12.04. Workt there id done remotely, over an SSH tunnel to a Cygwin X11 server, which is running on Windows XP. Whenever a new Inkscape window opens on that linux box (not the pop ups, but the first start and new document windows) that window is placed with its upper left corner exactly at the upper left corner of the screen. As a consequence the top and left parts of the window frame are off the screen. This is inconvenient since it puts the majority of the frame controls where they cannot be accessed. (Clicking once on the bottom of the frame shifts it down a couple of pixels, but that is a very inconvenient thing to have to do for every window.) Windows builds do not do this - the whole frame is within the screen when a window opens. Is the behavior seen on linux the result of some munged up configuration on my one machine, or is that what Inkscape is supposed to do on a linux/unix/OS X environment? If so, could the default start position maybe be changed to be 5 pixels down and to the right, so that there is at least a sliver of the top and side frame available to grab? A branch of Spirolive+BSpline is release, changes are: *pencil BSpline mode fixed. *fix crash making cusp nodes whith the node toolbar or shortcut *fix crash when apply BSpline to grpups *right click to close curve dont show menu when are just over the last point *double click on handle to reset default (SBasis point at 33.3334). *snap/steps moving handles with CTRL parametriced by widget. *button widget to reset to defaults *checkbox widget to ignore cusp node when change widgets *scalar widget to change the weight of the bsplines TODO: I couldent update the widget weight value when pressing reset default button, the curve change, the new value of the parameter is saved but the visible value not change, you need to unselect/select the item or unselect/select the BSpline item in lpe list to update. Hi, (1) Is there any progress on being able to highlight just a subset of nodes and extract that subset as a path? (paste as a separate, "stand-alone" path) (I realize the algorithm may not be straightforward — particularly if one makes some crazy non-continuous node selection — like, selecting every third node (rather than a subpath with all its consecutive nodes), but maybe there's already some default, "make-the-best-guess" function which would take a bunch of such nodes and figure out which ones are sequenced and how (and link them into a path), based on the parent sequences, and for those that it can't figure that out, just leave them disconnected/isolated, and let the user connect them afterwards) (2) alignment operators: it would be nice to be able to align node A to node B. Or, IOW, stipulate that A move to B (its vertical or horizontal value), but B itself not move. Or aligning a set of nodes — A,B,C to node D, where node D doesn't move. (As I understand it now, the vertical/horizontal align function positions all the nodes to some type of averaged value ? )

Hi to all. Some users have problem with the BSpline and Spirolive branch for windows. Brainless offer to me compile it to windows. Its hard, but finaly hi locate the problem whith some fonts, he think is solved and finaly can make the executable. But other user have the same problem, whith fonts and when open preferences dialog, inkscape crash. I think the problem isnt in the modifications added to the branch... bunch of pango-warning messages on Windows associated with new(er) devlibs

Upgraded today from devlibs 41 to 45. Rebuilt. When inkscape starts up on windows now it emits the bushel of warnings shown below. Only the last one (about the registry key, which is harmless) is familiar to me. All of the font related ones seem to have come in somewhere between devlibs 41 and 45. These do not appear when a linux build starts, and I know that most of these fonts are not present on my linux test system. How do we make these messages go away? Note, I looked in C:\Windows\Fonts and these messages correspond to font files shown there with a big "A" icon and having the file extension ".FON". These are bitmap fonts which are, I believe, only present for backwards compatibility, in case one needs to run a W95 program or something like that. Apparently these messages tell us that Pango has no idea how to open a .FON file. Surely there is no reason to tell us that over and over though! Is there not some pango configuration parameter that would cause it to ignore files found in the font directory which are not types it knows how to handle? It is then cast to SPCtx object and sent to the updateDisplay function. Various "update" handlers then retrieve the SPItemCtx data by casting back: SPItemCtx *ictx = (SPItemCtx *) ctx; double const aw = 1.0 / ictx->i2vp.descrim(); This seems a bit weird to me... why not make SPItemCtx a subclass of SPCtx? What is the difficulty in adding text decorations, especially underline?

There have been user requests for underline (a text decoration) going back years and years. Since it has not shown up I assume this means that some library Inkscape depends on cannot do this. I checked the most obvious suspects and did not find a definitive smoking gun: 1. Freetype does support underlining (both location and thickness). http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/documentation/freetype-2.1.9/docs/tutorial/step2.h… 2. SVG supports it with "text-decoration:underline". 3 Pango supports it: https://developer.gnome.org/pango/stable/PangoMarkupFormat.html 4. Cairo - not sure. (Maybe this is the guilty party?) So, is there a document somewhere which explains why Inkscape cannot underline? GCC version checking

Further to bug #992124 <RFE: clang support> [1], is there any reason why we still have a hardcoded check for gcc >= 3.0 in the configure script? 1. It prevents easy use of non-gcc compilers (clang) 2. Version 3.0 is archaic, and is presumably available on every platform that could feasibly build Inkscape (i.e., other infrastructure checks in the configure script would fail, so the test is redundant) 3. Why are we specifically looking for version 3.0? If we're wanting to check for a compiler feature, there are more elegant ways of checking for this than just looking for the version number. transform inkscape:original-d into a defs + LPE

Hi, Why original path are stored directly into the shape as an inkscape:original-d attribute rather than in a defs (like path-effect) ? Why is there no "simplify/smooth" LPE ? When you draw line (F6), a smooth factor is applied and a certain shape (ellipse, growing triangle) is used. If you'd like to replay different settings on the same input then you're out of luck : the original output is gone forever because the nodes are already discarded. Some we'll be able to remove the pattern along a path by going into the LPE, most will clik/drag the tool controls and ask why they can't modify settings AFTER the shape has been drawn How to submit a blue print ? filters with background image as source not rendering correctly and lack of support in browsers

Hi, I created a filter that applies a displacement map to the background image to simulate effects like water caustics or the warping you see around fires, but it doesn't render how I want it to. The filter is being applied to the entire bounding box of the path instead of just inside the path. I tried it in Opera, which does support using the background image as a filter source and it shows the same effect. Is this correct behavior? I've attached an example of my problem. It's a star over a checkboard, but you should only see the checkerboard distorted inside the star. Also, could someone comment on why so few browsers (I only know Opera) support the background image as a filter source? To me, it doesn't seem any more complicated than just a regular transparency. GdkEventMotion returning wrong (unexpected) x coordinates

in the file filter-effects-dialog.cpp, I'm trying to get auto scrolling to work horizontally in the connections box of the filter editor dialog (for https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1062134 ). it already works vertically, and you can test this by dragging a connector down (you might want to apply the patch found there after youve verified how this works on your clean branch). however, im trying to get the scrolling to work horizontally too, but it seems that e->x is returning strange values.. strange in that it seems that when i scroll the box, it uses the coordinates of the primitiveList object.. not the actual visible area (ie, the far left edge is not 0 after i scroll to the right).. so to make it scroll i have to drag past where the left corner would be. so to give you an ascii explanation: __________ | | | : [ ] | | | __________ imagine the [ ] is the primitives box, where the scrolling should occur and connections dragging is done. the : is where i have to drag to for the autoscrolling to kick in while dragging a connector if the area is scrolled a bit to the right.. ie, the : represents where the name of the effect would be if it was visible. hope that makes some sense at all the dragging code is in this function: FilterEffectsDialog::PrimitiveList::on_motion_notify_event(GdkEventMotion* e) i can post a patch of what i have so far if necessary thanks in advance -- View this message in context: http://inkscape.13.n6.nabble.com/GdkEventMotion-returning-wrong-unexpected-… Sent from the Inkscape - Dev mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hello to all. I release the new version of BSpline + BPower https://code.launchpad.net/~jabiertxof Fix too the problem tell me ~suv and i dont see at start. Previous releases are declared abandoned. The rasons to abandone previous releases are two: 1.- They are backward incompatible, the bspline node difinition is oposite now, think now is too much logical, and now you can increase-decrease the wheight of the bspline. I have a impotant question, when change the wheight of a curve/node its changed "symetricaly" (Move both handles at same), in the way of "Strict" Bspline. The cuestion is: Give the posibility to change independient handles give more control/power/confusion but maybe isnt strict BSplines. You always can press SHIFT key to move handles "symetricaly" like now. ¿Whats the comunity opinion about this? 2.- The code is fully refactored, more organiced and logical. I thick more easy to undertand. Strange Padding

When I select the object, it seems that more than the object is selected, because various extensions report the error that "no path is selected." Synthesized font faces.

Pango synthesizes Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic faces when they are not available on the system. Inkscape displays these styles in the UI. I can see a use for the synthesized Italic faces (actually Oblique) but I wonder how useful the synthesized Bold faces really are (it is not a trivial thing to do well). At the moment synthesized Bold faces are listed in the Style menus in the Text toolbar and the Text and Font dialog, and they are displayed in the Text and Font dialog preview area but they are not used on the canvas (probably a difference in how they are displayed, the former uses Pango markup in a Gtk widget while the latter is rendered by Cairo). Question: is it worth trying to get Cairo to render the synthesized Bold faces or should they be removed from the UI. What about the synthesized Italic faces? As an aside, I am struggling to understand how Pango handles font faces... mapping font names to family names and styles. For example, Impact which fc-list reports as Regular or Normal ends up having the style "Condensed"; the synthesized versions don't include "Condensed". Tav

Regarding the bug: I found the piece of code that handles the CMYK values to be scaled as [0,1]. Now making a change to scale values in [0,1]-->[0,100] (though mentioned as a more industry friendly standard) shall require changes to generic codes which also handle the CMS sliders of RGB Color profiles. Also, the interconversions b/w floats of [0,1] to rounded of integers in [0,100] shall cause some loss of accuracy as well. Can people who are more experienced in the designing fields be brought together for poll ? If many people want this change, I am up for tweaking the source file in question. Pardon my audacious attempt of suggesting an idea of taking a vote, but in my respect it does seem important. PS: For the more experienced developers, am I right in thinking that the scaling will cause a loss of accuracy ? Thankyou for the help. --- demicoder

SVG question, pattern references another pattern but adds a solid background.

EMF and WMF formats have BKMODE and BKCOLOR parameters which are applied to patterns. BKMODE is either transparent (no background) or opaque (BKCOLOR is drawn first, then the pattern is drawn over it). The tricky part for importing these formats and converting them to SVG is that the values of BKMODE/BKCOLOR are NOT employed when the pattern is defined, but when it is drawn. Arshdeep, Great idea.. using 0-100% rather than 0-1 would be bliss for us old school guys ;-) In general using 2 decimals instead of integers doesn't make that much difference for most CMYK designs. Most of the upper and lower values are not reachable for the press anyway. For instance many digital print machines won't print values lower than 10% and stop at 90% at the default settings used by the print shops. On topic of hexachrome and spot colors. Only the very high end of the print work scale as used in my native country of the Netherlands, spot colors are default for any corporation that wants to be held serious. KPN for instance even tried to patent their colour green some years ago and they will pay the extra layer of ink without blinking. Hexachrome is a pretty basic use in glossy magazines that actually often add another layer of varnish to it as well as spotcolor. Direct to plate with stochastic rastering is not uncommon either. I've got an Uncle running a 6 color Heidelberg with an additional varnish extension who specialises in Art related books in Holland and that is mainly hexachrome. It is not a large market, but highly lucrative and relatively stable, unlike the lower end of printing. I personally have been doing print since 1993 and I've seen it all pass the revue. Holland may be a bit of a exception to the rule, but it has been a leader in print technology since the 1600's when all the forbidden stuff was printed there. Design is an export product as much as taters. If Inkscape would support CMYK natively, rather than having to use workaround with the export so you can check while doing the design it would make it a more useful tool. Late binding puts the responsibility of error correction at the desk of your printer as well and most designers I know want to be able to do that themselves. Using color proofing printers and using screen callibration machines to get the whole design department on the same level. Those are not companies that are scared to spend a buck or what on tools and equipment as they also are paid in due for the use of it. Now sure, Inkscape does not have to pretend to operate on the same level, but if it is possible to support the basics I'd say it should be a consideration. I'd love to be able to do a color seperation in Inkscape in a similar way as I can in Coreldraw for instance, so I could check the output raster of my original Magenta raster with what is actually being printed in the print shop. Hi all, From a designers point of view I would stay away from generated faux font styles as far as possible. There is a reason why not all fonts have these styles that often go beyond the humongous amount of work that needs to be put into creating a font. If a designer really wants to screw up a font creators work, they can use stroke thickness, skew, stretch or even envelopes. But any experienced designer not satisfied with the look of a font will normally find himself exactly that one that fits his desired balance of whitespace and content. It's part of the skill of a designer to find the correct font that supports the design and typography. Font design itself is a work of dedication and skill that has always been beyond me and goes well beyond what normally meets the eye at 14px. Having tools like Fontforge really didn't do font design all that good if I have a look at modern fonts with their horrible flows, kerning, baseline shifts, corrupt edges and what all more. It's often like everyone with a camera being a photographer or everyone that knows how to push buttons in dreamweaver calling themselves web designer. As long as Inkscape doesn't really support CMYK, Hexachrome, Spot colours and the like, it can never be considered a truly professional tool for print. SVG supports named colours that might be used to simulate spot colours, but it is a rather small palette and the SVG standard just doesn't support anything but sRGB really. Pantone will not give a license to Inkscape for free I gather as they make a living on this and a good one. Color support can only be done using Inkscape namespaces with the sRGB equivalent in the style or attributes next to it and is dependent on output devises as well. Would be a hell of a lot of work to figure out even a few color profiles and quite some wasted resources for the one who does that. Maybe some university might be interested in doing that or some very progressive printer with deep pockets? The latter at this moment not available in Europe at least or will be hard to find. It's a massacre at the moment. If I would like to see anything in SVG 2.0 it would be arbitrary color spaces. Some way to define a color and it's sRGB equivalent in XML and link that up to the SVG file, like is being done with @fonts. @colorProfile or so. I convert the colors in Coreldraw from a Inkscape PDF export. The only reason I still use it and am bound to Windows. My 2 Feng, Jelle

Related to bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1060837 How to re-create the scenario being talked about in the bug report. All I get their is A(Alpha) value for my inkscape. The bug mentions the word 'ink'. I am guessing it refers to matching the printed colours and the colors on your monitor, as its a matter under the CMS (Color Management System). As an artist, I haven't worked on very high profile projects such that minor color chnages would make a huge impact so I am totally oblivious to the whole CMS thing. -- demicoder

boost incompatibility

Dear all, I have discovered that inkscape 0.47pre4 to 0.48.4 are incompatible with boost versions greater than 1.45.0. The most noticeable symptom is that text is not rendered properly. This is because it is heavily clipped. The effect is similar to that described in the (dismissed) bug 875469. To demonstrate this bug, compile inkscape with boost 1.46.0 or above and run it. Pick the text tool, click anywhere on the canvas and start to enter some text. Only the bottom couple of rows of pixels of each character are displayed. If you convert this text to a path it displays properly. Another way to demonstrate the bug is to take some text and put it on a curved path. As you modify the nodes of the path it is possible to see the text rendered inside a staircase-like set of clip rectangles. This problem affects inkview as well as inkscape. I am compiling with gcc 4.4.7 and configuring it like so: CC="gcc" CXX="c++" CFLAGS="-O3 -fstack-protector-all -march=i486" \ CXXFLAGS="-O3 -fstack-protector-all -march=i486" \ LDFLAGS="-fstack-protector-all" ./configure I have tried different versions of all the dependencies of inkscape, including C compiler, libraries and kernel, and the bug is independent of everything but the version of boost. At this stage I have not tried compiling with a lower optimisation level, so it is possible this bug only comes out of the woodwork with -O3. Equally, it is possible this bug only appears on 32-bit platforms. Yours, Is.

PR for shortcuts

Hi, Since 0.49 is shaping up so well with regards to polishing, I'd like to mention yet another thing. A while ago I discovered that several of our long-time users who have been with us since forever didn't even know that we have one-key shortcuts for tools. I mean, for real. People who do real design with Inkscape and are mostly happy with it were quietly complaining that there were no simpler shortcuts. Imagine my surprise :) Since 0.49 now shows F* based shortcuts, how difficult would it be to patch it to show alternative shortcuts as well, after a "," character? Or would it be too confusing? P.S. I've seen this complaint many times before: people were asking if there was a way to configure Inkscape to use some one-key shortcuts for tools. Alexandre Prokoudine http://libregraphicsworld.org

Hi all, As the discussion on short-cuts is popping up. If it would be possible to do so... can Shift+Delete be mapped to remove selected and copy to clipboard? It is a quite common operation that I miss in Inkscape. Shift+Insert instead or additional to CTRL+V would be welcome too. Having multiple mappings to one tool/task? Cheers, Jelle

ruler coordinate system: scaling and offset

Hi, I implemented an idea how to temporarily solve bug #170049 [1] for many users: In short, I added scaling and offset for the ruler display and cursor position status display without affecting any of the internal coordinates. This allows to define an inverted coordinate system and does not need document versioning. However, precision might suffer and units are not saved in svg as they are displayed by the rulers. Unfortunately, almost nobody seems to test this or give any feedback. I would appreciate to hear your opinion or have people test the patch.
