Ubuntu installation error

Today's Inkscape update resulted in an error on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. If no one else can corroborate problems with today's Ubuntu Software Center Inkscape update then I won't post it on Launchpad. It's entirely possible that it's my specific installation of Inkscape, given the recent problem with outsets/insets after installing nightly build/uninstalling/reinstalling from Ubuntu ppa. (That problem went away sometime during the past week.) Adding MIME data and type to images in cairo-renderer

Hello, I started to work on a patch for Inkscape to be able to export embedded or linked image in SVG to be exported in PDF with their correct MIME type and original raw data. Current code is exporting JPG file to bitmap file by storing the gdk pixbuf data, which results in heavy PDF files. I am still struggling with the cairo-renderer code to fully understand it. Two bugs related to the issue, I mentionned: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168708 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=612844 Please find attached my patch for a first step toward this new feature. Note, currently it is only written for JPG file. I'll add later a way to correctly work out the MIME type of images. I am now able to add the original MIME data on the cairo_image_surface with 'cairo_surface_set_mime_data'. But apparently the rest of the exporter code is redrawing the surface which causes the original data to be dropped, and the JPG images are still stored as bitmaps in the final PDF. According to Cairo doc on MIME data : "Caution: the associated MIME data will be discarded if you draw on the surface afterwards." I do not find which part of the renderer code is redrawing the image surface. Could one of you help me with this issue which would fix an annoying bug ? Related to that. Hello Vincius, While reading this I came to this thought. How far fetched would it be to instead of square pixels, enable it to turn them into arbitrary shapes? I am thinking of diamonds, stars, circles etc. And when following this line of thought, how feasible would it be to create 4 (or more) layers of color like the old fashioned color separation rasters. No doubt it would be heavy on the machine handling loads of objects, but it would enable us designers to play around with moire and color separation layers. It would certainly be worth the wait of generating this kind of stuff and bring it to a printer. Weighting the pixels colours and resizing the object to that weight should be fairly straightforward. Set these object as <use> clones with the weight of the colour and drop the result in 4 layers with a slight offset (thinking of CMYK simulation here). I don't want to keep you from your task with this fantasy, but it would be way cool and something that would make your pixelation scan really useful to me and probably others. So first set yourself to the task at hand, but maybe if you have some time left and are still inspired you could play around with this idea. In any case thanks for the effort you put into this wonderful application and making it even better. That goes for all people involved in this project b.t.w. Safely mixing C/C++ bindings for GNOME libraries

Hi All, Just a quick note about a common source of build failures (e.g., bug #112274) [1]. Basically, we disable the use of deprecated GNOME library symbols wherever possible so that we can avoid big API migration projects in future. A common problem, however, is that some of the C++ bindings (e.g., glibmm and gtkmm) use some of those deprecated symbols! In other words: Inkscape ----> glibmm ----> deprecated stuff in glib \---> glib \---> gtkmm ----> deprecated stuff in gtk+ \---> gtk+ So, even though we don't use deprecated stuff ourselves, we still need to take a little care with this! The solution is to ** Ensure that high-level dependencies are included in our source before low-level dependencies ** For example, the Glib::Thread API in glibmm depends on deprecated GThread stuff in glib. We will get a build failure if we do the following... #include <glib.h> #include <glibmm/threads.h> This is because the deprecated GThread stuff in <glib.h> will be hidden by the C++ preprocessor. When <glibmm/threads.h> is subsequently included, GThread stuff will therefore appear to be undeclared and we get an error like this: /usr/include/glibmm-2.4/threads.h:142:11: error: field ‘gobject_’ has incomplete type /usr/include/glibmm-2.4/glibmm/threads.h: In member function ‘GThread* Glib::Threads::Thread::gobj()’: The solution is to do the inclusions in this order: #include <glibmm/threads.h> #include <glib.h> This now compiles correctly because when <glibmm/threads.h> itself includes <glib.h>, it temporarily re-enables the deprecated stuff, uses it, and then disables it again. A couple of additional notes: 1. There's actually no need to #include <glib.h> after one of the <glibmm/*.h> headers... it is already pulled into our source by the glibmm header! 2. Remember that you have to avoid *any* inclusion on <glib.h> before using a <glibmm/*.h> header. As such, it's safest to just put the C++ headers at the top of any source file: i.e., // Gtkmm/Glibmm headers first... #include <gtkmm/aaa.h> #include <gtkmm/bbb.h> #include <glibmm/ccc.h> #include <glibmm/ddd.h> // Now include Inkscape stuff... #include "ui/dialog/wibble.h" #include "ui/dialog/wobble.h" 3. Ultimately, we can probably get rid of all direct usage of <glib.h> and Gtk+ headers and replace them with their respective C++ binding headers. Outset/Inset problems - bug or not?

I have Ubuntu 12.04 and Inkscape 0.48+devel r12347 Two weeks ago I installed the nightly build from Inkscape, then decided against it and uninstalled/reinstalled Inkscape from Ubuntu software center. Since then the outset/inset function has generated incorrect results for some shapes. dealing with broken external functions

After being told that the changes to a bug report aren't valid*, I decided to look into how hard it is to simply take broken functions off the menu, from the user perspective. > To remove the plt conversion as an option, I found that simply moving the Contents/Resources/extensions/plt* files to a subdirectory took them off the menu in the save dialog. That's because the sampling grid does not match the data grid, and since there is no reconstruction filter, values between data points are undefined. SVG vs. EMF+

Hi all, I'm having a look through EMF+, which is the metafile type corresponding to GDI+, to see what is in it that would add SVG features not currently representable in EMF (vanilla GDI). So far... These would be worth having: 1. Objects with colors that are RGB + Alpha. GDI uses only RGB and mixing operators to emulate opacity, the mixing operators are complex and I did not implement 99% of that in the present EMF input/output code. 2. Gradients. EMF has gradients, but the rectangular gradient record is apparently toxic - I have yet to find an application, including from Microsoft that can accept one. The majority of programs that write EMF files work around this by writing scads of tiny rectangles to emulate the gradient. (By majority I mean no programs, other than the ones I wrote, generate EMF gradient records.) Possibly the EMF+ gradients are not toxic so input/output of SVG gradients can stay as gradients and not have to be emulated. 3. Expanded hatch patterns (up from 7 in GDI [essentially] to 52). 4. Custom line caps. It is not clear to me how many of the other features in GDI+ have SVG equivalents. For instance: 5. Compound lines. GDI+ can draw a line with what is essentially a row of pens of various widths. Define a pen with a narrow stroke, space, wide stroke, space, narrow stroke, and draw a rectangle, and the result is a set of 3 nested rectangles, with a fat central stroke and thinner strokes inside and outside of it. Can SVG do this? I'm thinking one would have to import this in a loop, and create the rectangles one by one with the appropriate "sub" pen. 6. Clipping regions can be combined with XOR, UNION, INTERSECT and so forth. However, I do not recall in the present EMF output that clipping information is passed into the driver. Rather I vaguely recall that it was applied many levels above and the clipped shape is what is sent to the output driver. Other than for clipping there does not seem to be a way to create compound regions using these operators. I don't think SVG has these operators for general shapes either. Inkscape performs these operations on paths, but just puts the combined path in the SVG. 7. Graphics containers. Apparently the point of these is to provide a way to segregate high cost operations (like antialiasing) from low cost ones (a normal draw). So on one screen set up different containers and the quality sensitive ones are sent into the high cost container, while everything else goes into the lost container. For a Metafile this makes no sense, we are not interested in real time performance, and all objects should remain high quality. 8. Gradient curves. GDI+ does this by specifying an array of points (the curve) and a corresponding array of colors, and then some rules about how to interpolate colors. (Fill is another story, that uses a brush with a defined gradient.) I could not find an example of SVG stroking a gradient curve like this, other than by breaking it down into a series of separate line segments of slowly varying color. One thing that is definitely not a step in the right direction EMF to EMF+, at least in terms of dealing with the resulting metafile: 9. Remarkably few EMF+ objects and records have a fixed size. There are so many "optional" and "variable" fields that most objects and records cannot be represented with a struct. There were some complex EMF records, as for image storage, that were like this, but most EMF records had a fixed memory layout, so one could map a pointer in memory to a struct, and then just reference the values in that record by field names. It would help if Inkscape could produce a pdf file in the PDF X-3 format. That gets around the CMYK problem insofar as many printers have new printer and prepress software (e.g., LSI, Brandt-Doubleday) that will handle the conversion automatically from RGB to CMYK. I have a faster, SIMD IIR filter implementation, but have accuracy problems

All, I have ported the IIR filter implementation to use SSE intrinsics and have achieved a 2.5x speedup so far. But I'm having accuracy problems for large blurs due to using single precision instead of double. I've attached examples outputs that blurs a box with several sizes. For sigma=120, the annoying mach bands start getting noticeable. At sigma=200, it looks very bad, and at 350, you might as well use it as a sharpen filter :) This is the first graphics application I've seen where single precision isn't enough. Is the reason due to the recursive behavior of IIR (more accumulation of error) ? Basically, for large blurs (stdev > 100), 24 bits of precision isn't sufficient and you end up getting very annoying mach bands. For sigma = 100, the filter coefficients are: b[0] = 0.00000387430191040 b[1] = 2.96391582489013672 b[2] = -2.92843437194824219 b[3] = 0.96451467275619507 If I add b[0] to the other terms last (b[1] + b[2] + b[3]) + b[0], (earlier, when I added the b[0] term to b[1], the accuracy was even worse as expected), the alignment of the operands in binary is approximately: 1.00000000000000000000000 0.00000000000000000100000 meaning the addition loses a lot of the b[0] term's precision. Can anyone suggest how to proceed next and how useful you think this speedup is? (for me it's a moderate improvement because in my comic, I use marble and brick textures for the walls and floors - I also vectorized the turbulence generator). I would like to avoid using double precision since SSE supports only 2 doubles per operation instead of 4 floats. The things I thought about of trying next are: 1. Use int32 arithmetic (that would add 9 extra bits of precision) 2. Use 4 taps instead of 3. Would this really help? I don't know much about IIR filter design. [CAD] Connectors and Symbols

Dear Sebastian Götte and Tavmjong Bah, I'm working on these two items most keenly too, I would like to participate in code review as well as design review for the blueprints etc. The codebases for both items are not super big so I'd like to make sure we don't start committing over each other since the GSoC projects are nominally forked. I have a UI change for symbols which is waiting merge. I'm also interested in the design of the connectors since I know we all have different ideas about how it should be done (elements vs attributes, children vs groups). I'm not sure of the scope yet of the CAD work for 2013, can someone link me to the blueprint? Best Regards, Martin Owens

We have five successful GSOC proposals! Let me first congratulate the students and wish them success this summer. The five GSOC projects are: 1) An interactive tool for recoloring artwork. Arshdeep Singh (demicoder), mentored by Ted Gould.[1] 2) Improved units support and consolidating units handling to one place. Matthew Petroff, mentored by Johan Engelen.[2] 3) Electronics CAD support, focusing on improving connectors and symbols. Discussion on the GSoC proposal - Attribution of work/metadata/license changes

My project proposal didn't make it in to GSoC but I may be able to work on this anyway during the summer, though no "assigned" mentor for it. I'm now curious about the comments I got on my proposal [1] and would like some elaboration on them. The proposal is mainly about feedback in the statusbar but after reading John Engelen's comment [1] and thinking about it for the last weeks I'm leaning more towards the idea of actually collecting all the relevant metadata and presenting it in the document metadata settings tab. What do you think about this? I read on the Inkscape wiki about "Eliminate limitations" [2] when creating new features, if I understood it correctly it relates to Nathan Hurst's comment [1] about trying to take my idea further. The functionality of tracking metadata/attribution/license information is very specific but a good place to start and eventually how to generalise it will become obvious in the future. Is there anyone that has any idea how it can be generalised? Dear developers, I would like to receive a login to the wiki site, if possible. What steps are required as next, please? I understand, that it is a kind of pain to read such a request in the mailing list, but that is the only way I found out: The wiki login page ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=In…) states "please email the developer list", but there is no further link or info. Hi, Apparently SourceForge moved everyone to a fancy new platform and relocated our SVN repository, including the one with the current website. Relocating it didn't work for me, nor does checking out a new copy work. This simply means there will be no news on the website until we move to the new website.
