When the handle gets dropped near the shape it should connect to the shapes outer sub element (e.g. the nearest line of an rectangle) at an offset from its center calculated from the point of dropping the handle using a calculated normal. The Object would store the connection by adding an additional connection object to its connection list. Each connection object would at least need: - a reference to the attached handle, - a reference to the shapes sub element, to which the handle is attached - a relative offset from the shapes sub elements center point. - the normal vector to be optionally used for connecting attached line with an angle normal to the outer shape ( eg. for round objects) - sharp edges and the center of an sub element could be made prefered relative positions to snap to This could allow: * to delete connections when getting disconnected. * no need to handling additional default points * scaling of objects without disturbing the arrangement of the attached handles * allow attachments without code to display additional points/crosses/circles to show the user where he can attach the handle * no need decide in advance on the placement of the default connection point * individual placement by dropping the handle where it should stay * grabbing and moving the handle to a different location along the outer shape I don't know anything of the code base nor do I have any time to work on this in any capacity but envision the idea could lead to better diagram layout and improved usability. End shape tool with tool switch

Hello all Users/Developers, I was wondering if anyone was effected by this small bug(if you can call it one): sourceforge.net. Basically it means that if you switch from one tool to another before pressing enter, the shape/path drawn is destroyed. Is this intentional or would you like this to be fixed? I am looking for your opinions, be it in favor or against, so that if a lot of people appose this idea I won't waste any time on it. Thanks for your time. Regards, Samuel

Snapping to paths broken?

Hi, With trunk I am having trouble getting snapping to paths to work consistently. I was thinking about demoing the new snapping to the intersection of a path and guide. I can get it to work sometimes but for the most part my test rectangle will not snap to anything to do with a path. Snapping to the grid and guide lines always works as expected. Has anybody else seen this behavior? It seems to not work more often with complicated drawings (many layers). I've also gotten this error message a few times: ERROR:widgets/toolbox.cpp:2108:void toggle_snap_callback(GtkToggleAction*, gpointer): assertion failed: (ptr != NULL) Inkscape r10675 with Fedora 15. Synfig exporter extension

I've finished working on the first iteration of the SVG Synfig exporter. The essential features are there and a lot of bugs are fixed, so I think now would be a good time to consider including a copy with Inkscape. I committed the files into a personal branch of inkscape: "lp:~nikitakit/inkscape/svg2sif". (Disclaimer: I'm a git advocate and don't know much about bzr) My work was all done on Ubuntu natty with Python version "2.7.1+", testing against Inkscape 0.48.1, Inkscape trunk build, and a large collection of OpenClipArt files made with various (older) versions of Inkscape. It would be good if someone could test it on Windows and Mac (especially if the python versions are different). ~Nikita

corrupt SVG or bad Inkscape parser?

When I edit a camel image from OpenClipArt.org, and save it with Inkscape, the resulting SVG becomes corrupt. Bad Camel http://www.openclipart.org/detail/7474/camel-silhouette-by-johnny_automatic I'm not sure whether this image is corrupt or whether Inkscape has trouble parsing it. Hello Arcadie, my suggestion was to drop default predefined points, as the whole outline would be an infinite set of possible connection points. When ever a user drops an handle near to the outline, an instance of an connection point would be generated, positioned on the outline path next to the place of dropping the handle. This instance would hold a float which indicates the relative position of the connector on the given outline. eg.: float pos between 0 and 1, a value of 0.5 would define a position on the outline path half way between the start and the end of the path. This placement would be valid and appropriate even if the object gets scaled. As a result no predefined points are really necessary. One could build the outline out of different paths and maybe additional single point paths and only allow a subset of them to accept connectors, to specialize the objects behavior. But that would depend on the objects intended behavior and would be specific to the objects template. Inkscape with Visio style connectors

Something that's been missing for a while is the ability to set arbitrary connection points on objects so we can use visio style workflows with connectors doing more work for us. May I draw you collective attention to this demonstration video: http://divajutta.com/doctormo/inkscape-as-visio.ogv Here I show off a workflow hack (using nautilus as a stencil) and an genuine edmun scream style code hack to 0.48x branch mod'ing the connector-context code which you can find here: https://code.launchpad.net/~doctormo/inkscape/knot-visio It works by enabling rectangles inside groups to act as child center points. Each of the items you see me drag in the video is a group and each connector is a very tiny rectangle. I hacked it like this because now transforms also transform the new connector points and the amount of code I had to modify is quite small. It also fixes a bug with connectors where connected elements when grouped would not be able to be updated. I added a parent group transform signal catch for 1 level deep which should help with that. Anyway, as a proof of concept I humbly submit this idea to the rest of the developers here for review. Best Regards, Martin Owens
