Selector tool has a new mouse cursor (arrow with an open hand) for when your mouse is over a selectable object, and another (arrow with clinched hand) for when you're dragging an object. Hi all, For those of you that know a little about cairo, please have a look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/665628 It is a somewhat strange bug, as it only happens for completely black paths, not for other colors, while Inkscape does the same for paths with any color. Exporting a SVG to PS causes excessive blurriness

Hi everyone, I am trying, but struggling, to find a solution to bug #585286 [1], where exporting a SVG containing a transparent PNG to PS causes excessive blurriness. This is a major bug for me. I've done as much research as I can do on this bug. After delving through the code base, I think this bug is related to bug #427226 and bug #208217 - apparently Postscript does not support alpha transparency [2], which I think is what is causing the rasterization, and I think it is happening within Cairo. However, it still supports clipping and masking, so as far as I can tell this should be technically possible! An alternative is simply to increase the resolution of the forced rasterization, but I can't find anywhere in the code to increase this. Would this be part of Inkscape or Cairo? I've tried using Cairo 1.10.0 with no effect. If anybody has some knowledge of Inkscape/Cairo and can suggest some solutions or even ideas, I would be most grateful. LaTeX vs. other forms of TeX.

There is a presumption that the de facto version of TeX is LaTeX. However the latest work in TeX is centered around non-LaTeX versions such as XeTeX and Luatex. Some of us prefer our TeX without the excess baggage of LaTeX. So I wonder if it would be practical to have the Inkscape output of TeX text in e.g., pdftex format as well as LaTeX format? Crop tool should be straight forward to implement, thoughts?

G'day everyone, I had a thought after some observation and while it wouldn't look good on our already crowded toolbox, it should be fairly easy to implement a crop tool. In practice its just applying parent group to all things then a clippath and finally a resize page to contents command which we already have the code for... Also, it would be easy to have a rule that crops from the selection (if things are selected) by skipping that last resize page and only grouping the already selected stuff.. maybe attached as a mode of the default selector tool from the parent toolbar My thinking is that right now creating clippaths is a weird concept for new-to-vector users, but almost everyone gets the idea of cropping This could be a very achievable GSOC feature if someone is willing to mentor it.. Personally, I can see how much simpler it would be rather than drawing rects and making a weird selection every time i want to crop. to new users, this workflow is not obvious What are the thoughts here? -- Andy

Help needed in fixing line positioning bug.

Hi, I've found a problem with line positioning in text objects after a line is deleted. When I first saw this bug I though I might have introduced it with my recent work on text but it turns out that it predates the work. In any case I've investigated the bug and have narrowed down the problem but I don't know how to fix it. Here is how to reproduce the bug: 1. Create some multiline text. 2. Remove one of the middle lines including the new line character. 3. Save the file then look at it in a web browser or with the XML Editor. The lines will be shifted down one unit of line-height. Here is what I have found: When you delete a new-line: sp_te_delete calls delete_line_break and then te_update_layout_now. The latter calls SPText::rebuildLayout() which loops over the tspans, calling tspan->attributes.setFirstXY(anchor_point). The values of anchor_point are correct and Inkscape displays the tpans correctly but the x and y attributes as shown by the XML Editor are not updated. It is as if the x and y attributes are being updated in a copy of the tspans. What needs to be done to get the tspans in the tree update correctly? Tav

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX apologies for Xposting XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX hello all, i am working on a performative installation in which inkscape is used. the idea is that people can draw on the screen (in inkscape) and a constantly refreshing screengrab is streamed to a server (in pure data) which displays it on a webpage. this page also displays a performer in australia. both 'screens' (australia + touchscreen in amsterdam) are communicating together through drawing/touch. what i am missing in inkscape for all this to run smoothly is: 1) full screen option (not even showing the menu bar 'File', 'Edit', etc., *only* the canvas). 2) a graphical button (i.e. filled green circle) which, when 'pressed', will 'save as' (to record the current vector drawing to a folder with a numerically incrementing filename), 'select all', 'erase', 'return pointer to paintbrush tool option'. the situation is that i have very little time to figure this out and i can imagine that for some people on this list this is rather easy to implement. therefore i hope that someone out there has a bit of time and perhaps an inclination to work on this. there is of course budget for this and proper credits to the programmer/developper and promotion of inkscape project will be included in the project documentation. the project runs on nov. 6th. New translatable Keys and mouse reference

Hello, A "Keys and mouse reference" translation system is available in the inkscape-docs project as of revision 385 (see https://code.launchpad.net/inkscape-docs). The new keys.xml has been almost entirely docbookified in order to make its conversion to PO easier, and the resulting HTML file is slightly different than the current one (new external CSS, some style changes, and strict XHTML 1.0). I didn't wanted to change its aspect too drastically, and thus only fine-tuned some styles in order to (hopefully!) improve the overall readability on most browsers (tested with Opera 10.63, IE8 and Firefox 3.6.10 on Windows XP, and Firefox 3.6.10 on Ubuntu 10.04). Don't hesitate to comment. To add a new translation, copy keys.pot (from http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape-docs/trunk/files/head%3A…) to LANG.po, translate (only 939 strings...), and attach the PO file to a bug report, send it to the translators' list, or commit it if you have the appropriate rights. Then update the UI translation file to redirect the link to the new HTML file on the website. BTW, we currently use keysVERSION.html (keys048.html) and thus it would be straightforward to use keysVERSION.LANG.html (keys049.sk.html...). But we could also choose keys-VERSION-LANG.html (keys-049-ja.po). Any preference? or another idea? Regards. -- Nicolas

pdflatex use case

Hi All, I am very grateful to Johan for the excellent work he did putting a Latex export into 0.48. In my use of Inkscape/Latex, I maintain a sub-directory with the figures in... indeed, sometimes I maintain a sub-directory for each chapter, each with a figures directory. This use doesn't play well with the export as it stands currently. The Latex export assumes that the figure is in the same directory as the calling latex document. I would like to ask if the directory that the exports reside in could be specified from Inkscape. I would like, for example, to make mine './ chapter1/figures'. The output .tex from latex would then append this to the image path called by 'includegraphics'. A text field on the export dialogue is one possibility (but I appreciate that dialogue is already busy). Please let me know any if you require any further detail or work on this proposal, Richard

three patches regarding batch export, layer selection and xml-editor

Hi List, I've been a happy user of Inkscape, and now I needed some tweaks. I attach the patches against the current svn head, and brief description for them: (1) mutual_hide_on_png_export.patch This adds a new checkbox to the Export dialog if multiple selection is present. Ticking it hides not only non-selected items, but also other selected items on export, therefore the different items don't iterfere with each other. (2) xml_editor_jump_to_element_on_layer_select.patch If a layer is selected in the Layers dialog, the XML editor jumps to the appropriate svg:g element. (3) add_layer_to_selection.patch This is kind of work-in-progress. A new two-state column is added to the Layers dialog, which shows if the layer is selected or not, and also on clicking the row icon can add/remove the layer to/from the selection. I mainly use this for sub-layer selection and moving. Possible improvements: - currently the show/hide eye icon is copied - right-align the column (how is this possible in gtk?) - if multiple layers are selected, trying to grab and move them by clicking on an item inside one of the selected layers moves only that layer. Hack: create a dummy layer with a "control" rectangle, select the control-rect, add the layers to the selection using the new icons, and then grab the control rect and move them all. I hope you find the patches useful and even improve them if required. BR, Robin

Quirkiness with CMS Fill tab

Hi list - The CMS Fill tab acts funky when I link to 'USWebCoatedSWOP.icc' (as provided by Adobe[0]). The drop-down only works the first time (ie, color sliders appear), but making changes is not really possible - the sliders disappear as soon as you attempt to interact with them. Linking 'ISOcoated.icc' does not cause this issue. This is in stable 0.48. I just checked 0.47 and I get the same weirdness in the CMS tab there. No output on the command line. Can anyone confirm? I'm ubuntu 10.04 amd64. I built 0.48 from the tarball this morning and 0.47 is from the repos. Not a huge deal - but I am curious as to what the problem might be. Hi, As you very well remember, we still use SVN for the website. So, I was intending to commit news translation into Russian today, but they ended up being commited instead of English files, so out first two news items in English for September are in Pushkin lingo now. Inkscape UI Papercuts

Hi everyone, in the last month+ I have conducted a tiny survey with a few fresh Inkscape users. A mixture of ethnographic research in design and 'papercuts' by mr. Siegel. ;) (http://davidsiegel.org/one-hundred-paper-cuts/) I asked a few colleagues to try using inkscape for some time and put down all the little irritations they find. I tried to systematize the list somewhat, but that could use some more work probably. They are mostly small inconsistencies, unnecessarily complex jargon, etc. Anyhow, it's a list of roughly 100+ small issues (some with suggested simple corrections), a la: -- Inkscape preferences: Color management: 'Black point compensation', the tip says: 'enables black point compensation' not too informative. -- Inkscape preferences: Interface. 'Enable dynamic relayout'... Technical jargon. -- Commands Bar: Import: The Tip says: 'Import bitmap or SVG into this document' but actually it imports so much more (see import in the file:import) -- Text and Font panel: The 'Layout' area is a misnomer. Solution: The correct title would be: 'Text alignment and direction'. (Alignment being: Left, centered, right, justified. Direction: horizontal/vertical). ...etc. What would be the best way to present those? Should I submit them as bugs? Should I try to out down the solution suggestions for the issues, too? Thanks.
