Hey all, I've just installed inkscape 0.48 from the nightly build (there is still no stable ppa) since 0.47 started crashing every time I pressed the stroke/fill dialog. Now my presure sensitivity has gone and I was looking at the new dialog for input devices... I can't make heads nor tales of it. What is it supposed to be letting me do? What's the difference between the configuration (which has a single checkbox and that's it) and the hardware tab? What is linking for? If the use pressure sensitivity checkbox is checked, then why doesn't it work? Is there anything else? If the testing area is for trying out all the inputs, why is it so confusing? All those little boxes? Where would pressure be shown? Why is the box so small, even when there is nothing else in that side pannel? It's hard to see everything. I did recognise that the old input ui needed fixing, but I'm very unsure about this ui. I know what I'm doing and I can't figure it out. Martin,

Hi, I'm currently trying to implement customizable filters (try Filters>Experimental) with Ivan Louette, and found (thanks to ~suv) a small bug in the code of the feComponentTransfer primitive (see https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/638943). To summarize, when the effect preview is updated (sometimes after many changes) the following error shows in the console: gboolean sp_document_add_resource(SPDocument*, const gchar*, SPObject*): assertion `!g_slist_find(rlist, object)' failed sp_document_add_resource is called from componenttransfer.cpp, line 103, preceded by the comment: //do we need this? When this call is commented out, the error message doesn't show, but I'm not sure it's safe to remove it. It is also used in some other filters (pointlight.cpp, distantlight.cpp, spotlight.cpp and componenttransfer-funcnode.cpp) always with the same kind of comment (or // is this necessary?), but in these cases, the resources are released differently (compare sp_fedistantlight_release with sp_feComponentTransfer_release). Two essentials for publishing users.

Inkscape needs two more features for publishing. First, the CMYK color model needs to be a real option. ImageMagick will convert an svg file to CMYK but that means going from vector to bitmap. Second, there should be an option for PDF output in PDF X/1-a format to satisfy the largest POD printer, Lightning Source Inc. (LSI). Currently my only path is to import all or part of a cover image into Scribus 1.5.0 (development version) and save it from there. Hi, The project of the students from Ecole Centrale Lyon has ended in June. Their report (written in english) is available on my page of the Inkscape Wiki <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User:Steren>. The code is in a dedicated Inkscape branch<https://code.launchpad.net/~centralelyon2010/inkscape/imagelinks2> on Launchpad. You will find: - a use of relative links by default - a smart relinking tool for broken images - a first step in the image properties redesign. The first part of this page<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Image_properties_dialog_enhancements> details what has been done and is dedicated to bug tracking for this branch. (Can we use launchpad bug tracking for a branch? If so, we should do it). You are welcomed to test it and report errors, keep in mind that it is non-finished work. Once again, I think it was a great experience for the students to work on a project such as Inkscape. I hope they will see their effort being integrated into trunk one day, the same we were pleased to see the spray tool or the enhanced LPEs. And some questions around usage of URL or IRI shoud be discussed (see the previous wiki page): Originally, file:// was before the path, after the students' work, path is written directly and no ASCII conversion is done. The W3C allow the use of IRI, but this change may interfere with Inkscape. I guess it shouldn't be too hard to transform the IRI into a URI. What do you think ? Any feedback is welcomed. Expand svg standard to include CMYK color model.

If the proposed new standard were to include the CMYK color model as an alternate to RGB , and Inkscape were modified to include it, then the potential for using Inkscape in publishing work would be expanded. I have always thought that open source graphics software need well known and appreciated artists to use it end talk about it. Thus I sent a message to Nina Paley because I was so fascinated by "Sita" and I am interested to draw the attention of artists to Inkscape and svg filters. And one hour and an half later she replied the following message ! I think there is a very important opportunity to spread information about Inkscape there and that's why I send the message to you all. In any case, can someone name the source code files that implement bar codes on Inkscape 0.48? Automatic mention of shortcuts in tooltips

I've just added code to automatically add the shortcut key to tooltips of verbs. If you find any problems with tooltips (it lists something strange, a tooltip doesn't show anymore, the shortcut is listed double, whatever) you know where to look first. The main change is that the shortcut is now made part of the tooltip as reported by the verb and that we now use a gtk function to derive the shortcut label instead of our own function (the result seems to be the same). I've tried to check for situations where this would lead to double or unwanted listing of the shortcut, but so far it seems fine.

Integrating Diffusion Curves

I'm working on Diffusion Curves (for master thesis) and will try to get them in Inkscape in the foreseeable future (this calender year hopefully). As I'm slowly getting more grip on the technical side of things (which is what my thesis will be about) I'd love some input (and help) on UI issues. For those who haven't heard about them yet, they're basically a new and very(!) flexible way of specifying color transitions. You just assign colors to curves and let the program fill in the intermediate space using diffusion. This tends to create visually pleasing, smooth, transitions while allowing for a very complex geometry with minimal effort. More information (especially see the references at the bottom for examples): http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Diffusion_Curves My current thinking is that it would probably be best to treat diffusion curves as a paint server, allowing people to assign color to nodes (that either coincide with existing nodes or are positioned somewhere on the path). The colors would be linearly interpolated along the path. A scheme like this would fit in well with the idea of expanding the functionality of the gradient tool and having a general color picker. Unfortunately this would sort of limit the ability to blur boundaries to the point that it might not make any sense. But then again, maybe it's a mistake to try and integrate two separate concepts (blur and color transitions), even in the original paper these are treated quite separately (the blur values are diffused separately and then a spatially varying blur is applied). Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. Also, would it make sense to apply diffusion curves to strokes? If so, how would that work?

SVG Open 2010 Report

SVG Open 2010 was held in Paris, and since I live nearby I offered to give a talk about Inkscape. I would like to thank the organizers for waving the conference fee and even providing a ticket for the conference dinner aboard a boat on the Seine. There were quite a few interesting talks and panels and I learned quite a bit. My overall impression can be summed up easily: SVG has finally arrived. This conclusion was easy to make after talking to the many representatives of the major web browsers, including those from Microsoft who were there in numbers. In case anybody missed the news, IE9 will include comprehensive support for SVG, only missing the filters, SMIL, and SVG fonts modules. Filters will almost certainly appear in IE10; SMIL and fonts might too depending on demand. In case anybody wants to know, it took about 15 developers 15 months to implement SVG support in IE. A good fraction of the discussion was on how SVG fits into HTML5. HTML5 is not a finished standard and there are still pieces to work out. Microsoft is implementing what it can now and has an important message for users: Download and test the IE9 previews and betas. Complain about any behavior you find wrong or undesirable. You have about three months before IE9 gets locked down. It will be hard to change behavior after that as IE9 is expected to be around for 10 years and future versions of IE will maintain backwards compatibility. I'm afraid my notes are quite poor so I will just make a list of some random observations: * HTML5 will be everywhere soon. Firefox 4 and IE9 already contains HTML5 parsers, Webkit (Chrome and Safari) and Opera will have them soon (you can use SVG in XHTML right now). All the browsers support some HTML5 features. * There is a huge desire to have CSS3 apply the same way to HTML as to SVG. This includes things like sharing filters. * SVG is very popular in mapping circles (and not just in OpenStreetMap). * Vector effects are very interesting for maps, especially the ability to share partial paths between objects and for creating complex paths for roads, et cetera. * Most TV set-top boxes use SVG for their displays. * Look for cool SVG demos at SVG-Wow.org. A better LaTeX equation renderer

Hello, I was annoyed that the LaTeX equation insert mechanism didn't provide a way to control the size of the equation. This makes it needlessly difficult to match the size of the text in the body of a LaTeX document. So I modified that extension. Attached is a revised version that: (a) Allows scaling by a specified factor; (b) Allows typesetting non-equations; (c) Allows customizing the preamble to the LaTeX document; (d) Properly scales the input using the 'viewBox' attribute, rather than relying on the structure of the document; and (e) Uses pdf2svg ( http://www.cityinthesky.co.uk/pdf2svg.html ) rather than pstoedit. On point (e), pdf2svg seemed more reliable to me, though YMMV. I can easily switch it back to pstoedit, although it's harder to control just where the resulting formula ends up. For point (c), I was annoyed by the very limited UI options: it seems hard to either embed newlines in the preamble or give a sufficiently large input area. Is there any hope of fixing this? I could, I guess, have different input boxes for different lines, but that's really horrendously clunky. Any comments are welcome. SVG media type registration

Hi, The media type registration (MIME) for SVG: image/svg+xml is finally being registered. As part of this registration, information on how SVG content is tagged by clipboards is required. For example, the Windows Clipboard Name is "SVG Image". Can someone tell me how Inkscape tags SVG content on the clipboard for Windows, MacOS, and Linux? Increasing performance through OpenCL

Hi all, Previously I was discussing on lib2geom the concept of applying OpenCL based refactoring on the code(lib2geom initially). Then on suggestions of some developers I have moved from lib2geom to inskcape on an overall to increase the performance of inskcape in any possible manner. Some earlier suggestions included, Parallelizing the rendering of cairo based implementation. I would love to move forward in the area, but I will be needing some push(in terms of startup) to get started. Like the first and foremost question that lies ahead of me as a wall is, "What is the area of the code that is possible to be parallelized and how much can it affect the performance??" Second question is, What approach should be taken to parallelize the stuff?? Most serial algorithms when implemented in parallel totally change their appearance. So will that be OK or not?? There are other hurdles but it would be better to first proceed forwards with snacks and then go the main feast. Hi, looks like a bug to me but I'd like to get some comments before reporting. When I add a drop shadow in my de locale environment on XP even after setting inkscape up to use en the stdDeviation and colorMatrix alpha values are set with comma instead of dot. Text Dialog Not Grabbing Font, Style, Size

This has been a recurring problem for us since about vers .45: select a block of text, click on the font dialog toolbar (or choose in menu) - when the dialog appears, font is blank, size is blank, style defaults to normal. edit the text and click apply and get an unexpected font in return. clicking on it into rotation mode sometimes helps pop up with font info or rapid clicking to get it into edit mode sometimes helps - but this is too cumbersome are we missing something or does this need work ?

Cloned Tiles interface rework proposal

Congratulations on another terrific release! I hope you’re all taking a well-deserved break. In the meantime, I wanted to discuss whether it’s possible to rework the Tiled Clones interface, mainly to address the following issues: - Location: Tiled Clones is too powerful a tool to be hidden in Edit. Proposal: move Tiled Clones to Object, and have it open a dialogue like Fill, Align etc rather than a floating box (Ctrl + Shift + C). - The interface: the current interface is very powerful, but it feels like staring down a math/geometry class. :P Separating Tiles and Rotate and adding a preview area using simple examples would be nice. - “How do I make it rotate around This point?” Have the option to select an on-screen guideline, like how it works with filters and LPEs. For rotations, you select an angled line. Now, I’m assuming that most uses of tiled clones would fall into a few major categories: - Tiles: including simple symmetry and various tiles options. - Radial Clone: flowers, laces, round borders, clocks, gears... - Objects Along Path: Like Pattern Upon Path, except for objects. Example: a line of trees bordering a curving river and fading into the background. Hey Inkscapers, Firstly, congratulations and thank you all so much for Inkscape 0.48 I was just looking at this page here: http://www.inkscape.org/download/?lang=en And I have to say I'm fairly disappointed that Inkscape as a project caters so poorly to educating Free Desktop users about how to get Inkscape for their platform. It's not just that there isn't a download for Ubuntu or Fedora directly, but because it doesn't even have an apt link or a ppa for where you can get the latest Inkscape release. This causes major headaches for us trying to support Ubuntu: like Mozilla who recommend Ubuntu users upgrade their version of Ubuntu by downloading tar-balls, it's annoying, confusing for users and a it's maintaining the myth that FOSS is for geeks. If you'd like some help with the preparation of the page and publishing for various platforms, I'd be very happy to lend a hand. Best Regards, Martin Owens
