CLAMP does not handle NaN correctly

Hi all, While fixing a crash I noticed that the CLAMP macro does not handle NaN properly, although it is stated in its comments that it should ("returns v bounded to within [a, b]. If v is NaN then returns a."). Apparently, if NaN goes in, then NaN comes out :-(. I tried fixing this in the macro but I didn't succeed. Could one of the little-less-inexperienced devs have a look at this? This crash can be reproduced using revision 21793 or older: create a grid, draw a star, and snap both its handles to the same grid intersection. So far so good. Now try drawing a new star somewhere else and watch in horror! The "proportion" parameter of the star has become NaN, and remains NaN although it has been clamped in sp_star_context_set(). If I use this line for debugging (inserted on line 210 of star-context.cpp) std::cout << "CLAMP DOESN'T HANDLE NaN! Before clamping: " << val->getDouble(0.5) << " -> after clamping: " << sc->proportion << std::endl; Then this is what I get: CLAMP DOESN'T HANDLE NaN! Before clamping: nan -> after clamping: nan I fixed this for the star but there might be more instances of this bug. It might however save us some future headaches if someone could fix the CLAMP macro. Regards, Diederik

"Grid" transformations and water imitation

Hi, I'm drafting a blueprint [1] for simulation of deformations caused by water. What I want to see is something like [2]. I've been trying to achieve it with the envelope effect to no avail, because only the borders can be bent. Photoshop has a tool [3] closer to what I'm looking for. I'm coming to the conclusion that one way would be to deform paths pulling the vertex and intersections of a grid. Now, if my memory is right, we had something like this some time ago but I don't recall its name and is not on the LPE menu on the latest revisions (maybe it was pulled?). Suggestions about how to achieve the water waves effect are welcome. I'm trying to generate a sample of what I'm looking for, but so far inkscape is not helping me with the envelope LPE so I will probably have to resort to manual editing. One of my ideas is to use the named "grid" LPE and plug a list of sub-effects like ripple effect, water waves, horizontal waves, vertical waves... Each mode would present a set of settings, for example: * Ripple: freq, amplitude, position of the generator... * Waves: frequency, amplitude, randomness... * H/V waves: frequency and amplitude... Strange fill/stroke settings in freehand tools after fresh install

Hi, after freshly installing Inkscape (rev. 21524), the Pen/Pencil tools produce lines which are filled black but don't have any stroke. This is very counterintuitive. The small info field in the toolbar (on the right hand side) displays "Fill: None, Stroke: Black (000000/1)" (these are indeed the values specified in preferences-skeleton.h for the freehand tools). However, both in the Fill & Stroke dialog and in the Preferences it says: "Fill: Unset, Stroke: Unset", and this probably explains the strange appearance of the drawn lines. What's happening here? Why are the values in preferences-skeleton.h not correctly taken into account? I think this should definitely be fixed before 0.47. Max

Hi, I haven't seen any bug hunt scores. Are they posted somewhere other than the developer's mailing list? I think having the scores on the developer's mailing list helps stimulate bug fixing as it makes the release more real. I can help with this if given a bit of guidance. I also am having a hard time keeping track of all the details of the release as most are buried in old emails. Hi, Navigating through bug/wishlist reports, I found this old one<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171993>that was declared invalid, but I'd like to discuss a little more. It's about clones behaviour in general. The 'svg' specification is very limiting with this respect, but I think there are svg compilant ways to get more freedom. What I dislike in inkscape/pure svg clones: -color/style management: it's very difficult to have objects share shape but not color. The parent's color has to be set to 'undifined', hence looking black, which generally means you'll have to hide it (as for custom stroke width, dashes..., they require the svg editor!). Moreover, one might want to have some clones share the fill color but have custom stroke, and/or someother share the stroke color but not the fill.This is doable using intermediate clones, but definitely not handy. -transform management: create an object A, create a clone A' of it, put A' in a group G. Now select A and G and rotate them. A' is rotated twice!!! This is definitely non intuitive, and means you'd better move the parent object to a specific layer and never use it directly in your drawing if you don't want to bump into pretty bad situations. -more generally, making a difference between the parent and the clones will always induce unexpected or non intuitive effects. IMO, parent and clones should be prefectly symetric. One naive way to improve this would be to have our own "inkscape:clone" objects of course, and let them behave exactly the way we want. I'd like to suggest another intermediate option. I think svg clones are mainly disgned for "internal" use. My experience is that each time I had to use them, I indeed did end up putting the parent in a separate layer (at least away from the main drawing) and work with clones only. We could automate this process: When an object is cloned, not only the clone is created, but the parent is also moved to a special hidden layer (or in the defs, why not?, or simply hidden) and replaced by another clone. + all visible instance of the "thing" can be manipulated, grouped, transformed, uniformly. + it makes it possible to let the clone inherit only some style properties of the parent: at creation time, the parent's style would be moved to an "inkscape:default_clone_style" attribute, and the style itself would be set to undefined. Inkscape would compare clone's style to the "default_clone_style" to detect user modified properties, and maintain all style changes accordingly. +finally, it would be so nice to be able, whenever the user attempts to node-edit a clone, hide the clone itself, replace it by a temporary copy of the parent, and transfer the modifications to the parent. Of course, there are issues: in particular, the parent may appear as a reference anywhere else in the document. Changing it's style to undifined might have unexpected results. One solution would be to use an intermediate object: an inkscape special object that would be a linked copy of the parent, but have the style attribute set to undefined, and have the clones point to this linked copy. Ok, this might sound too complex. This can be declined in softer versions: for instance, instead of making this automatic and transparent to the user, we could at least offer the possibility *at least offer the user the possibility to automatically move the parent to a separate layer *when the user attempts to set the style of a clone when it does not make sens, suggest either setting the style of the parent or setting the parent's style to undefined and transfer the actual style to all existing clones. svg transformations help

Hi to all, while working on a lightweight svg editor implemented as firefox extension I ran into problem and now need some help to understand the fundamentals of nested svg transformations. The basic matrix concatenations work well but when I start to rotate an element which already has a skew transform applied I got it working well only if I prepend the rotation matrix to the transform... so far good but rotate an element which resides inside of a group things get more complicated. I tried with inkscape and found it will apply a matrix and also change the width and height and even the stroke-width of the rect I used for testing like: <g transform="translate(100,100) skewY(10) skewX(25)" id="g15"> <rect id="skewPath23" x="-222.08493" y="237.81218" onclick="incrementTransform(this)" width="138.00793" height="101.14107" transform="matrix(0.8490597,-0.5282969,0.9708449,0.2397086,0,0)" style="fill:#ff0000;fill-opacity:0.5;stroke:#330000;stroke-width:0.35443538" /> </g> works well but how to understand? Regressions(?) in rendering tests

For some reason the rendering test bugs/bug181995.svg now gives a blur that is wider than it is tall (which is not the intended effect). The normal blur test still passes though, so it might have something to do with transforms. I filed a bug at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/395197 In addition livepatheffect/ruler.svg suddenly renders differently (in a relatively subtle way), someone who knows what the intended effect is should have a look to see what's best (I haven't filed a bug). JavaFX support for Inkscape?

Hi Inkscape developers. I'd like to see if there is anyone interested in working on a JavaFX plugin for Inkscape. Please let me introduce myself. I'm Josh Marinacci from the JavaFX engineering team at Sun. JavaFX is our new platform for graphic intensive applications that runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux (as well as phones and TVs in the future). Recently there have been threads on a few mailing lists asking for JavaFX support in Inkscape so I thought I'd see if there was anyone in the developer community interested in creating such a plugin. Let me explain what this means. Today we have something called the JavaFX Production Suite, which is a set of plugins for Photoshop and Illustrator. They let you export graphics from those tools and then integrate them in an app you are building, adding animation and event handlers directly to the graphics. I put together a screencast to show you how it works in Photoshop: http://blip.tv/file/2288262 We simply don't have the developer resources to create plugins for tools other than Photoshop and Illustrator, but we also don't want to leave open source and Linux designers out of the loop. We'd love to help some in the Inkscape community build such a plugin. We can provide technical support and specs, and answer questions. I think it would be pretty easy for an experienced Inkscape developer to build such an export plugin. The underlying .FXZ format is basically a zip file containing images and some text metadata similar to XML. It should be pretty easy to generate. It's my understanding that there was a previous effort to create an Inkscape plugin (Silviera Neto was working on it, I think). Is this plugin still under development? If so we'd love to provide any assistance possible. Please let me know if there's any interest. Thanks! Josh

I just realized we should probably mention that Ted and I are being interviewed today on FLOSS Weekly in regards to Inkscape. http://twit.tv/floss It will be streamed live today at 1:30pm on http://live.twit.tv/ but then will go out on the FLOSS Weekly podcast. That usually goes up around the weekend. Hopefully we can bring a bit of attention for Inkscape, the new release, and just possibly interest a few more users to come in and help with final 0.47 testing and bug fixing.
