Error compiling

filter UI (convolve matrix)

Here are some considerations about the convolve matrix ui current implementation: (1) I think that the rows and cols parameters dont need a scroll bar since they are integer values selectable within a very small range. The scroll bar is only wasting space there since its even easiear to select the desired value directly typing it or by using the up or dow arrows. (2) I have drawn a spline and have imported a bitmap. I have applied the same filter to both (convolve matrix) when I change the divisor or the bias parameters, the effect on the spline updates automaticaly while I scroll the bar, but on the image I MUST double click on the filter name to have the effect aplied. It is a weird behaviour I think. Do you know why is it happenning? (3) the bias and divisor scroll bars bypass the default value behaviour (which could be desired in some ocasions, mainly because the default value seems to be usually a good choice aesteticaly) Maybe a good soulition woul be to initialize it with the default value, not zero. Also it limits the range of possible values. (4) how do we set the targetX and targetY? Maybe we could have a little black dot indicating it on the matrix And one desired feature for the filters ui in general: (5) it would be nice if we coul drag and drop a filter from the left list into the filter diagram area at the right in order to use it as if it was a filter primitive. In the UI it would show the filter name (it's an abstraction to the user) but behind the scenes it would probably be a copy of the filter structure connected to the rest of the real primitives implementing a "higher level" filter. Spam in our sourceforge forums

Hi, There's still a lot of spam being posted into the "installation help" forum. About 5 a day, with currently only one real post in the last month. That's a bit skewed... I guess people are being scared away when they see the first 10 messages of so being spam (I don't come over everyday to clean up the mess). Maybe we could try to block anonymous posts for a few weeks, and then unblock them again. There's a slight chance that the spammer (it's apparently only a single #%$#@) might notice and stop bugging us. This will also shy away real people (as opposed to the spam bots), but it's not being used anyhow at the moment. The "manual" forum already has anonymous posts blocked, but the others haven't. All the tiny detailed options are there under the hood, but I think only some subset should be provided to the user. For example, in the object snapper we currently only snap boundingbox corners to other bounding boxes, and nodes to other nodes or paths. There's no mixing of those any longer (i.e. no nodes to bboxes), which makes snapping much more intuitive. Does anyone have any objections to this behaviour? I like the idea of only snapping to nodes at sharp corners.We will still need an option to disable snapping to nodes, as someone might want to snap to any point along a path, also to any point close to a sharp node. It would be annoying if it snaps to the node when you get close to it, so this doesn't help in reducing the snapping dialog clutter. But I think I might filter out the smooth nodes anyway, merely for improving the snapping responsiveness. Diederik

Unfortunately I think the documentation you seek is largely unavailable. :( This isn't on purpose, it just hasn't been done yet. Change in object snap behavior

I noticed that in SVN the object/node snap behavior is different from that in 0.45. In 0.45 if I had a polyline then I would only get snapping to the nodes, not to other parts of the line. In 0.46 it is equally happy to snap to any part of the line, making it difficult to snap to the corner vertex. I can understand there's no particular reason to preferentially snap to a smooth node on a path, but for corner nodes I think you should get snapping behavior that somehow takes precedent over the line-snapping behavior. --bb

coloured markers

one friend asked me if it is possible to have start, middle and end markers coloured. The UI aparently only allows black markers. Then I looked at the svg xml and noticed that markers declarations are quite flexible. Is it only my impression, or we can indeed use as markers absolutly anything that is valid svg ? I would propose that a color-selection button is placed to the right of each of the marker combo-boxes. (maybe even 2: one for marker-fill and one for marker-stroke) Juca

Well, I still may not have made your work obselete. After all, all I've done is replace the GtkWindow* of SPDesktop::window with Gtk::Window*. It was a relatively simple fix to go through all the dependancies and change all those. For proper Gtkmmification, SPDesktop should probably be turned from a struct to a class, retagged "Inkscape::UI::Desktop" (or something), and derrived from Gtk::Window. This would be a proper job of it. new ways to scroll and zoom

I know adding prefs settings for individual shortcuts is evil, but since we don't yet have a UI for editing keymaps, and these features were requested A LOT, I think in this case it's justified: * You can now enable Space+mouse drag to pan canvas, as it does in Adobe Illustrator. This mode is enabled by the "Left mouse button pans when Space is pressed" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog. By default it is off and pressing the spacebar key switches you to Selector and back, as it always did in Inkscape. * By default, rotating the mouse wheel scrolls the canvas vertically and Ctrl+wheel zooms in and out. Now, if you turn on the "Mouse wheel zooms by default" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog, this behavior is reversed: mouse wheel zooms without Ctrl and scrolls with Ctrl. This new mode should be familiar for users of AutoCAD and CorelDraw. * In the Zoom tool, right mouse button always zooms out instead of calling the context menu (which is rather useless in this tool anyway). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Gtkmmifying the desktop window object

Hi All, As we discussed a few weeks ago, I've now gtkmmified the desktop window object. I've also set this object to be parent windows of the file dialogs, which prevents them falling underneath the application window in Windows as per bug #1431528. I've spent quite a long time testing this modification, both in Ubuntu, XP and in Vista, and everything seems ok. Nonetheless, this sort of modification is could create bugs, especially with all the pointer casting which goes on in Inkscape. So let me know if there are any problems. In working on this I may have stumbled across another bug which has crept in from somehwhere: In Windows, try saving a file through the file dialog. At this point the application crashes. You can see this happen if you download Inkscape0707240355.7z (which comes from a few days ago before I comitted this latest mod, so it's not my fault). I used message boxes to trace the problem to line 644 of file.cpp: "delete saveDialog;". However when I compiled this morning, and stepped through with a debugger I could find no problem - so it remains an enigma for now. Win32 build error w/ pdf-input

I'm getting a build error on a fresh update from SVN. The errors start off with: Make error line 179: problem compiling: src/extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf- input.cpp:19:27: error: goo/GooString.h: No such file or directory And snowball from there. Since it's an extension I presume I could just exclude it from the build and be fine, but I'm not sure how to do that with the btool.exe thing. Thanks, --bb

Lighting Effects in Inkscape

Hi, It's been a long time since I started using Inkscape. During the last two weeks, I got frustrated that lighting effects weren't implemented in Inkscape. I took advantage of Niko Kiirala great filter framework to write a first simple implementation of these lighting effects. Almost everything is implemented now. (kernelUnitsLength support is still missing but I plan to get it done soon). I write this email to the list to signal a discreprancy I noticed while implementing feSpecularLighting. In fact the svg feSpecularLighting specification, and test examples, do not follow Phong lighting model. In the SVG specs, the specular lighting is computed by taking ks * N.H^speExp In every Phong lighting model I found by googling it is computed as ks * R.E^speExp where ks is the specular constant speExp is the specular exponent N is the surface normal vector L is the light vector, unit vector from the surface point to the light E is the eye vector, unit vector from the surface to the viewer R is the reflected light vector, unit vector from the surface point indicating the reflection direction. H is the normalized vector colinear to L+E/2 writing things down we have N.H = cos (alpha) for some alpha and R.E = cos(2*alpha). The formula using R.E seems much more natural since the viewer sees reflection if R is "close" to E, ie R.E is close to 1. For the time being the N.H is implemented in Inkscape (standard compliance above all). However, can anybody explain the formula using N.H? Does anybody know why svg specularLighting uses N.H instead of R.E? Cheers, Jean-Rene

Hi, after building the latest inkscape svn version, the exec I obtained kept crashing. After some tests I solved the problem. Inkscape wasn't able to find the key binding file. I just looked into the bugtracker. This bug was already reported and the bug report was closed. ([ 1653629 ] 0.45 from source in ubuntu). http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1653629&group_id=9… Shouldn't inkscape die in a nicer way than a segfault, with an explicit warning, if the key file cannot be found? GTK+ the cause of Wacom issues in Windows XP SP2?

I'm new to mailing lists so figure me if they follow a specific format. Basically, I've ran across posts in the GIMP newsgroup (comp.graphics.apps.gimp): http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… I remember myself specifically asking in that group if Wacom tablets had known usability in The GIMP: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… Then I posted this, somewhat desperate for any responses: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.graphics.apps.gimp/browse_thread/thread… ...and also recently on InkscapeForum.com I posted a thread: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=135&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a ...they all related to GTK+ possibly being the culprit, at least that is what conclusion I came to. Anyway, I seem to have problems mostly when using the Pencil tool, Bezier, and Calligraphy tool. Mostly, as in 95% of the time, it is the Pencil tool. I can draw and draw and sometimes, the tool just stops responding (the cursor hangs) until I lift the Stylus and then put it back to the Tablet. Even then, sometimes I have to do it *several* times before it will respond. Then there are some times when I have no problem. Or one jerky movement, lift the Stylus and everything works fine again. I simply cannot reproduce it consistently. Anyway, the kind, and somewhat more experienced than myself administrator of InkscapeForum.com suggested I send you guys/gals an e-mail. My setup is Windows XP SP2, with a Graphire4 4x5. Do I need to provide more information? Any ideas on what the culprit may be? Is it GTK+? Is it something else? displacementmap renderer bug

SVG spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/filters.html#feDisplacementMap) states that pixel values must be alpha-demultiplied before processing this filter operation. Inkscape 0.46 release?

Hi all, It's been a while since our 0.45.1 release, and a ton of good new features have been added in. However, in recent months many of us have busy with new jobs, school, conferences, etc. However with summer here I'd like to hear if there is interest in seeing 0.46 released? Ubuntu's next feature freeze is August 16th, one month from now. I would love to see Inkscape 0.46 ready for inclusion there, and would be able to pitch in help if others are also interested in getting an Inkscape release out in that timeframe. What do you think? 3 more attention-to-detail observations

Hi Everyone, 3 questions about the inkscape UI. The first relates to Windows users only: why is it that the menu item icons are shrunk slightly? I get the impression that GTK has taken the Windows system item height (which is good), then squished the menu bitmaps into that height (which is bad). The the MS Office applications got around this problem by simply increasing the height of each item so as to accomodate the icon. Is it possible to do this with GTK?, because right now the icons look more like a mush than attractive decoration. (BTW: Roll on the Tango icons) Second observation: It seems to me that "Vacuum Defs" is a bit of an unfortunate title for this menu item, in that from reading it, even an experianced user such as myself struggles to comprehend what it might actually do. Is this the best title? I've never seen another menu item ever with the word "Vacuum" in it; it's not a well understood UI term. And most users aren't going to know what a "def" is either. Third observation: in XP/Vista in the development builds (but not in 0.45.1), there's some wierd toolbar behaviour at the moment, as you'll see in this screenshot: http://www.airwebreathe.org.uk/toolbar.png. In both XP and Vista, when the mouse hovers over the chevron at the end of the toolbar you get a wierd double bevel effect. Can this be sorted out? Also in the Vista screenshot you may notice that the toolbar gradient doesn't line up with the toolbar frame properly. Any comments?

Committing LivePathEffects to trunk

Hello all, I want to get LivePathEffects (LPE) into trunk soon. The benefit of having my own branch (i.e. few people build it, so highly unstable code is no prob ;-) ; thanks for testing guys!!!) is starting to become a drawback (i.e. I'd like people to use it and report bugs/problems/RFE's) There is a problem though: Dependencies. LPE needs lib2geom (this is a *good* thing!), which needs Boost. 1. I don't think Boost is going to be a big problem. Well... it is big, but 2geom does not use that many headers; i have to check but only a small part of boost is necessary i think. 2. lib2geom does not have an official release and LPE uses the latest SVN version. Development is very active, often providing new features InkscapeLPE wants. This basically means that to build LPE, one first must svn up 2geom and make install it. A. What are your thoughts on the dependency issues? B. Now I think of it, I think the file-format extension introduced by LPE must be agreed upon as well. It is SVG compatible and not very intrusive but still... Kind regards, Johan

Regarding selection and the filter dialog, how about the following setup: the dialog will still display all filters, but the user can set which filter is currently applied to the selected object(s) by double clicking a filter in the left-hand list. The active filter will get a dot or a small icon to show it is being used on the selection. Single-clicking a filter will select it for editing of its primitives/attributes, but won't apply it to the selection. How's this sound? If it's OK, it shouldn't take too long to do. hacking latex-pstricks.cpp to export text as text

Hi folks, I'm would like to provide a choice for psTricks export to export text as text (not paths). My problems are that I can't get the position of the text within: PrintLatex::text(Inkscape::Extension::Print *mod, char const *text,NR::Point p, SPStyle const *const style) 'p' looks like it should contain this information (ie. p[NR::X]) but it contains the value 0. Further up, 'latex-pstricks-out.cpp' is making a call to: sp_item_invoke_print (mod->base, &context); where Inkscape::Extension::Print = *mod; mod->base = SP_ITEM (sp_document_root (doc)); ...so; any thoughts appreciated! r,
