bounding box bug

When I try selecting and moving the blue box in the attached example the bounding box seems to be displaced from the actual content. I've tested it using the version of inkscape that comes with ubuntu edgy and one I compiled today. Alex

When we set inkscape-devel@ up, we set it to post-by-anyone to make it easy for people not subscribed to be able to send emails. However, in recent weeks we seem to be receiving an unusually high amount of spam. A few months ago the inkscape-user@ list was suffering the same situation, and reached a concensus to have list posting closed to non-members. This resulted in immediately preventing the spam emails. It also had the predicted downside of preventing some people from posting to the list, but so far this has been a fairly low level problem (most of the complaints were from people who didn't have much experience with mailing lists in general, and could be addressed with a little education). Like many on this list, I've always been in the camp of keeping list posting open to non-members, however, given inkscape-user's success, it might be worth considering. What do others think? Bryce

Imagine : I have made some cool shapes (an animal for instance) as part of a poster I'm doing with inkscape. I just select these shapes and select "export to open-clipart", and it is included in the library... Wow, lots of responses! I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about now. I've never done any major coding before, just school projects, and a bit of goofing of on my own. I apologize if my responses or ideas of what needs to be done seem naive -- I'm trying to learn as I go here. I'd like to make something usefull, but if I try to bite off something too big, I'll never get it done. Import Clipart function

I think it'd be great if it were possible to select "Import clipart" in the Inkscape menu, and there was a nice clipart browser that would pop up to let you view the clipart by category, see thumbnails, and select a piece of clipart to import into your drawing. As I'm thinking about this, I'm thinking specificly of OCAL. What do people think? I'd like to implement this, but I wanted to get some input first. I'm not new to programming, but I haven't done much with GUIs, and nothing with GTK. Here's what I was thinking... The GUI would have a two panes, a Cancel and an OK button. The left pane would be an expandable tree view of the OCAL categories. You could expand a category to view the sub categories. The right pane would display thumbnails of the clipart in the selected category (and it's sub categories?). The user would select a thumbnail, then click "OK" to insert it. Since rendering all of the SVG cliparts in each category would take too long, I would use the png thumbnails already in OCAL. So as not to be reading through all the OCAL collection each time you want to import, the categories and thumbnails listings would be read from an XML file. I would write a script or plugin to generate the appropriate XML file, and if this works out nicely, maybe OCAL would be able to include the XML file in the download. This next part should be read with the disclaimer that this is how it would work if I'm understanding the Inkscape source correctly... I would create a new verb SP_VERB_FILE_IMPORT_CLIPART, and a new menu item "Import Clipart". When it was chosen, it would call sp_clipart_file_import instead of sp_file_import like the current Import does. The sp_clipart_file_import would open the dialog I described above, and call file_import like the current Import method does. Essentially it would do the exact same job that Import does now, but with a GUI that is friendly for browsing clipart. Artists needed!

With all the recent additions - clipping, masking, and especially blur - Inkscape is finally able to produce some real photorealistic art. This is a call to arms for all Inkscape artists to start working on some stunning examples of what's now possible in Inkscape. We will need them - the more the better - for screenshots, examples, tutorials, etc. etc. One thing I would like to request in particular: A car. It would be very nice to have a complex, detailed, photorealistic SVG image of a shiny impressive car. There are several reasons for why this is desirable. First, cars are sexy (for many people, anyway). Second, they are relatively easy to draw by tracing a photo - you don't need to be much of an artist for that, you just need patience, Inkscape skills, and a good photo to start from. Third, with their glass and brass and polish, well-lit cars are ideal for showcasing "photorealism". And finally, our main competitor at this time, Xara LX, has long used amazingly photorealistic images of cars (among other things) for its promotion, and it worked well. We need such an image if only to give people an idea of how we compare with Xara. NEW: blur quality/speed settings

The quality of on-screen blur display is controlled by the Blur quality option on the new Filters tab of Inkscape Preferences (Ctrl+Shift+P). The available options range from best quality/slowest display to worst quality/fastest display, the default being in the middle between the two. Any setting except the "best quality" may introduce some rendering artefacts, especially when blurring thin strokes; on the other hand, the "best quality" setting may make Inkscape extremely slow at high zooms. handling memory for display buffers

Previously, Inkscape didn't check if there's enough free memory for its pixel buffers and could crash without warning due to insufficient memory, e.g. upon zooming in. This problem became much worse after implementing Gaussian blur, because rendering blurred objects at high zooms may require a pixel buffer much bigger than the visible canvas. Now this situation is handled more gracefully: if a display operation requires more memory than available, or more than 100Mb (which corresponds to a 5000x5000 pixel buffer), it is skipped. This may result in blurred objects "disappearing" at high zooms. This is purely a display issue, however, it never corrupts data; just zoom out (or reduce blur radius) and the missing object will show up OK. The "100Mb" magic number was chosen so that to prevent too large allocations which, even if they succeed, bog the system down to an almost unusable state. I realize it's far from perfect, but at least it's a solution which kinda works for a "typical" system with at least 256Mb memory. Hello, now that I have access to our server, it looks like the server is full. Bryce, it looks like the /var/log/apache/ftp folder is 4 gigs of space. Seems like we shoudl unmerge apache-1.3 IMO and that ftp issue...looks like failed ftp attempts on there have mounted up over time... Anyway...I think this is causing the wiki issue and any php cookie issues on the site...(and is why I can't change some rewrite rules). wiki error

Hey all, I tried to save some non-english text onto our wiki and now am getting a db error: please see the wiki http://wiki.inkscape.org/ Bryce or ACSpike, could you restart the wiki please? This is weird that it can't take non-english text. I was trying to copy the language bar from the Open Clip Art Library... Please update..looks like the wiki is borked until it can be restarted...I hope we have backups as well in case we need to change things...otherwise, I think we could hand hack those fields in the db with non-english texts. Expanded alternative to normalized matrix file encoding

I like to use inkscape to build UI elements which I can access in raster form via a caching renderer. Typically, there are one or two aspects within the xml which I need to vary in order to get the dynamic effect I am looking for. I'll substitute values into the xml and render according to the request. Unfortunately, with the normalized matrix form being the final encoding, access to all of the basic transformations is cryptic. I would really like to be able to assign an id to an element, and access its discrete transforms individually, by type. For example, I would like to be able to render a watch into raster form by specifying a normalized rotation for hour, minute, and second. It would be pretty easy for me to do this now, only if I had the option of not collapsing the xml for transforms, and instead could access individual named or numbered transformations which constitute them, in addition to being able to access their high-level parameters, like "rotate by" instead of in affine form. Think of it as leaving procedural hooks for specialized renderings. Perhaps a property on a transform which indicates it should remain separate would suffice. Reactions?

Some tips for using blur in Inkscape SVN: 0. Use the Blur slider in the Fill and Stroke dialog. You can blur anything - paths, shapes, strokes, calligraphy, bitmaps, text, clones, groups. 1. Currently, the maximum blur radius is 10% of the object size. Any larger blur will reveal the clear-cut margins - the blurred object cannot (currently) spread wider than the 10%. However it's easy to work around this limitation: group the object that you want to blur with some large fully-transparent object, thus making the group larger than the object, and blur the group. 2. Objects that store their transformation matrices (texts, groups, shapes, but not paths - unless you set "Store transforms" to "Preserved"), when scaled, scale also the blur applied to them. This means you can squeeze an object and its blur will be bigger in one dimension than the other. (It's also possible to do that by setting different blur radii for X and Y, but we don't yet have UI for that, though it works if you set it manually.) 3. You can combine blurring with gradients. For example, an ellipse with elliptic opacity gradient will look much softer and more natural when blurred. An object with a horizontal linear opacity gradient, when blurred, will look like it is more blurred on its transparent side than on its opaque side. 4. Masks and clipping are applied AFTER blur. That is, if you clip an object and then blur it (or blur it first and then clip - it makes no difference), the clipped edges will remain crisp. Often, this is what you want. If, however, you want to blur the clipped/masked edges too (possibly with a different radius), you can use grouping: group the clipped object with some other object (which you can then delete from the group) and blur the group. 5. A recipe for an autoupdating black drop shadow for object of any color: create object; unset its fill (it becomes black); create two clones of it; put one clone on top and paint any color; put the other color at bottom, blur it and shift sideways. Now you can edit the unset-fill original (use Alt+click to select it) and everything will update. Obviously, if you want a drop shadow of the same color as the object itself, just one clone for the shadow will suffice. 6. If an object has a fill that you don't want to blur (e.g. pattern, or if it's a bitmap), but you want to feather its edges, use blurred transparency mask: copy the object; paint it white; blur it as needed; scale the blurred copy down so its blur margins are entirely within the original object; select both the original and the blurred mask; do Object > Mask > Set. 7. You can use the Tile Clones dialog to create patterns of variously blurred clones - either with smooth variation of the blur per row/column, or/and with randomized blurring. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi Popolon, on another subject, I read your blog post: http://popolon.org/gblog2/script-masque-opaque-opaque-mask-script and I think this kind of extension well deserves being in the Inkscape's distribution. However, I think that to be really usable and convenient, your script must be changed to do the following: 1. It must embed the bitmap used for the mask into the SVG, using the data URI (see share/examples/data_uri.svg for an example). This way the user won't have to fiddle with the separate bitmap files - much simpler to use. 2. The mask must cover objects of any size, so that the user does not have to think if the object is big enough or not. This can be achieved in two ways: either by scaling the mask bitmap to cover the entire object (but it may grow after that!), or (better) by using seamless bitmap texture and converting it to pattern first (i.e. create a large enough rect; fill it with pattern made from the bitmap; then apply that rect as mask to the object). This bit is difficult because to do any of this, the script must know the dimensions of the objects currently selected. So I have a question for Ted: how difficult it would be to add new command line parameters in script calls, that would supply these dimensions for each selected object (now, only object IDs are supplied)? Would this break the existing extensions? 3. And finally, to make this really useful, we need to provide at least several different texturizing extensions - they would only differ by what bitmaps they use (plasma, wood, bubbles, clouds, etc etc) What do you all think? -- bulia byak Inkscape.
