Hi, David Washington and Inkscape developers, I believe I have my own solution the icon problem without requiring additional source code or Microsoft fixing the 1-bit transparency problem. Additional source code offers the benefits of having just separate logo for Windows 10S and non 10S version, but requires maintenance or additional time to maintain. If you note that many application logo does not actually use shadows, it is perfectly acceptable for the Inkscape application logo to lack shadow(s). Updating the current Inkscape logo would help solve this. In the attached files, it is the Inkscape logo without the shadows. It is still beautiful with 1-bit transparency mask restriction. Hello all, There seems to be a good Git repository on Gitlab now: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape I think there's still work to do in making the branch names, for releases especially, consistent. And there are probably many that can be deleted. But folks should be able to get back to work using that Git repository. Stickers for Inkscape

Thought I'd post the first in the series: Coffee tribute to Inkscape: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t2r8gzwdvoguyqu/inkscape_sticker-latte_art.png?dl… The idea is to create a series of fun stickers that show off Inkscape's illustration capabilities, with web information, slogan, and inkscape logo as part of the objects pictured. Illustrations done in Inkscape with vector objects only. I will post the svgs for people to play with/bemoan when the series is finished. Maybe we could sell Inkscape sticker sheets for fund raising as well. Before anyone asks, yes, there will be a Tea and a Soda tribute to Inkscape as well in the series. Hackfest: Souvenir cups

Hey folks. So since people liked taking home the cups at last year's hackfest as souvenirs (which also saves me having to fly them back to London in my lap), I've decided to make them properly commemorative with an engraved plate. We also had that issue where cups sort of migrated about, so to answer the question: Is that my cup or yours, I've decided to further personalise them with name & project title. For example, the above has Jabier Arriaza - Inkscape Dev. I also need your preference for right-or left-handed cup to determine which side of the cup the plate will be attached. I'll need this information by the end of this week in order to make sure all the cups are assembled and ready to go. i'm used to the "pull request" workflow on github. It seems to me that the analogous workflow on GitLab would be the "Merge Requests". I forked the Inkscape git repo into my personal GitLab account here: https://gitlab.com/fsanches/inkscape Then I created a feature branch challed *variable_fonts* where I'll be working on the OpenType Variable Fonts feature. But I also created a feature branch specifically for a single-commit merge request. The code itself is very very simple. The idea here is just to exercise the workflow. The branch is called *disable_libnrtype_debugging_code* and you can see it here: https://gitlab.com/fsanches/inkscape/commits/disable_libnrtype_debugging_co… Then I opened a "merge request", but it failed to give me any success screen. Once I tried doing it for the second time it gave me an error as can be seen on the attached screenshot. It says: The form contains the following error: - Validate branches Cannot Create: This merge request already exists: ["Disable debugging code on libnrtype Layout-TNG-Compute at compile-time."] But when I look at Inkscape's GitLab repo dashboard, I cannot see any mention on open merge requests. UX help for inkscape - project ideas?

Hi everyone, I've recently become involved in an opportunity to work with a graduate level college class on a semester-long project potentially on a regular basis starting this fall. The class is on information science and the students have skills in UX as well as info processing such as machine learning. The projects have a scope of 15 weeks, and involve 2-3 grad students working roughly 9 hours/week and presenting them at the end of the class I am putting together a list of potential project abstracts for the professor running the class and thought it might be neat to include an Inkscape potential project idea. I was wondering if there are any specific projects within Inkscape that might be good for this kind of project? I would be willing to serve as the mentor / liaision for the students. One idea that came to mind was perhaps the students could look into the new alternative glyphs work Tav did (as he mentioned, "The GUI leaves a bit to be desired"), come up with some UI mockups / proposals, maybe do some usability testing on prototypes, and present their recommendations to you guys at the end? I am emailing to get your feedback on a survey I would like to begin collecting responses for. As I see it, growing users and growing contributors are two sides of the same coin for any successful FOSS project. This particular survey is focusing on the user side of that coin. My intent is to help develop criteria for, and consensus around, who our primary markets for Inkscape should be. A free and open application is of course for anyone to use for any reason. I'm a little worried that it might take beyond I'm willing to stay up tomorrow evening as the last test import took about 18 hours (then run the address sanitizer and upload). Hi Friends, As I'm writing up a quick draft to announce the upcoming hackfest, I suddenly wondered if it might be a good idea to write a short item about the recent new work on the new manual? I could do that, after I finish the hackfest article. I'm thinking Maren might be able to get all the details correct, the first time around? Although I don't mean to volunteer her. As I said, I could do it myself, if we decide to do it. I think it would help in community-building, to keep the wider community up to date about these things. gcode tools support lacking

Hi Friends, It's been well over a year since the team who created Inkscape's gcode tools, have answered requests for support in their forum, cnc-club (see link in Extensions menu > Gcodetools > About). There currently are not any users who participate in forums, who understand these tools who are apparently interested in helping. Is there anyone in the community who would be willing to be contacted (in lieu of regularly visiting forums) with questions about the gcode tools, when they come up (which is more and more lately)? Or does anyone know of any resources, such as tutorials? I only know of one...oh great, and I guess I've misplaced the link. But it's fairly limited. (I've even offered to write tutorials for the gcode tools, if the cnc-club forum would collaborate - no answer.) Personally, if the community can't provide support for our own tools, well.... I guess I'd have to start refering users elsewhere, for producing the gcode. Some have already started referring elsewhere (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32491) Of course I don't want to do that. But this is a frustrating. Can the development community provide any guidance? Thank you very much, brynn

In most drawing programs, the "current colour" (the one shown in the colour widget) is what the drawn shape will be. I draw a line - I make it red. I draw another line... but it's reverted back to the default line colour... I'm wanting to draw red lines, that's why I went through the trouble of changing the colour. I have to change it every single time = big big waste of time. To get around this, as others have noted, the workflow is draw a bunch of lines, select them all, then paste style. Yea... it's not great. It's what people are complaining about. This is why it's simpler to have one widget to control colour. The tool configuration landmines are what need to be replaced - an easy way to do that is to re-think how transparency and colour are applied, and provide a more intuitive and simpler interface that doesn't have vanishing bits. If I am adding text to a doc, I don't want to have to change the colour from some default value every time I add more text. If I'm drawing shapes, I expect that Inkscape will preserve the colour I've chosen, not change it back to some default value until I tell it to change the colour. If I'm drawing lines, I'd like the same as for shapes, though often the fill gets in the way. It's not that big a deal to change the fill to transparent, but maybe a good solution is to change the fill to none by default, then add fill colour if the line becomes a closed shape. This is not a simple problem, and understanding all the implications is half the battle. Alternative glyphs

Hi, Many fonts have alternative glyphs for some unicode codepoints. These glyphs can be accessed by enabling OpenType tables such as 'salt', 'ss01', etc. Inkscape has supported using such alternative glyphs through the 'Variants' tab of the 'Text and Font' dialog (under the last section, 'Feature Settings'). But one problem that was pointed out is that it is difficult to know what alternative glyphs are available for a particular font. I've just added code in trunk that will display such alternative glyphs in the 'Feature Settings' section. The GUI leaves a bit to be desired and there is some more work to do to show all alternative glyphs properly (for example, font style is ignored) but it is a start.
