who would not want to paste in place? Is there a way to have ctrl+v do paste in place instead of just paste? this already pissed me off, when I was using adobe indesign, but I was able to quickly change that. How do I do so in inkscape? David

xft font fixes

Today I looked into how Inkscape finds and presents fonts (using Xft, i.e. this only affects Linux). Lots of problems are now fixed. 1. For some reason, Inkscape ignored all fonts from *.pfa files, commenting thus: /* fixme: This is silly and evil */ /* But Freetype just does not load pfa reliably (Lauris) */ /* Changed to exclude pfa, better for OSX */ In my tests, pfa fonts are loaded just as well as any other fonts. So I restored the pfa loading capability. Now I need someone else to confirm that it works with pfa fonts. This may fix bug 894947. 2. Much worse, when parsing a font, Inkscape (that is, Sodipodi, because this part of the code did not change from Sodipodi times) only pays attention to weight and slant - and nothing else. As a result, font faces within a family that differ in some other parameters (condensed, outline, small caps etc) were simply ignored, not used and not shown. Until today, Inkscape only loaded 173 font faces on my system; after I fixed this and the pfa loading, it shows 202! This will likely fix bug 904962. 3. The names for faces within a family were constructed by Inkscape from the numeric weight and slant parameters. As a result, all fonts were shown in the list as "Normal", "Italic", etc., even when the fonts used different style names (Regular, Book, Slanted etc). Now it remembers and uses for display the exact style name of the font as returned by Xft. 4. When sorting full font names into families, a rather stupid algorithm was used which unreliably compared font names with family names. As a result, fonts sometimes ended up in wrong families. This is now fixed, each font remembers its exact full name and family name as reported by Xft. 5. Very annoyingly, the list of styles in the Text dialog was not sorted. Now it is sorted so that Regular or Roman always comes first, then Italic, Bold, Bold Italic. TODO: This is only tested on Linux. I may well have broken something on Windows. This is an unfortunate attitude. I disagree thoroughly with many points of contention in the following forward. I do think the best course of action towards this type of negative emotional criticism is to blow past it and focus on the goals (ie, our roadmap--prove the critics wrong). My initial response was to point by point discuss reply to this on the sodi-list, but I do not agree with that philosophy, as I feel that Inkscape is moving in the totally proper way. The reason we forked is because the codebase was being held up and communication was being routed (basically) through one person's decision-making. While the codebase might be open source, that style of management sounds similar to many top-down closed source projects, and thank God that both codebases are GPL'ed. bug: crash when trying to close path

Hi folks, I know the aim is to close bugs not open them, but I've found another "crashes it every time i do it" bug. Steps to crash inkscape are as follows: create a rectangle, switch to path mode, convert it to path, select the 2 nodes on one side and hit the + a couple of times so you have one side divided into 4 sections. select 2 of the new nodes, and split the path, now select the same 2 nodes and hit tje join path at selectd nodes button, and voila, error box. error on win2k reads: **ERROR**: file nodepath.cpp:line2778(void sp_nodepath_subpath_close(SPNodeSubPath*)): assertion failed: (sp->first->cpde == ART_MOVETO) aborting... after which it bombs out. entered in tracker as bug #900635 cheers John __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? presentation slides

Hello all, I had some time today and earlier found out that I am going to give a presentation about Inkscape at UCSD at this place Center for Research in Computing and the Arts, and thus, made some default slides for presentations of Inkscape. They are in the head inkscape cvs module in share/examples/ . They are perfect for standard screen sizes and I made em look purty. Talk amongst yourselves, or tweak, change and rearrange. This is a small inverse diamond in the top left corner of the selected object's bounding box. This makes it much easier to handle multi-object selections. You absolutely rock! Thanks a million! The patch works wonderfully, and I did not notice any significant slowdown. I found only one problem with your patch: it seems to ignore the stroke-miterlimit property and thus may render very long miters, which is certainly not what a user expects. The old code also had problems with that property, in that it interpreted it as the minimum angle below which miter is chaned to bevel (at least that's the impression I got from experimenting, I have not looked into the code). The correct interpretation is different: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/painting.html#StrokeMiterlimitProperty says that this property gives the upper limit of the ratio of the miter length to the stroke width. The initial value (used if not set explicitly) is 4. Currently, it seems like your patch ignores any value of stroke-miterlimit. Can you please fix that, using of course the correct interpretation of that property? P.S. For now I'll upload your patch to the patch tracker, so that other developers can have a look. Here's one serious problem with your patch: It somehow breaks nr_arena_item_invoke_pick for a path, so that that function returns the item for every point inside its bounding box, ignoring the shape of the path. That is, you cannot pick items via "holes" in other items. Do this: - draw an ellipse - draw a freehand line around the ellipse - switch to selector and try to click on the ellipse Now you cannot select the ellipse by clicking - the freehand line is always selected, because the ellipse is completely within the line's bounding box. Also, the mouse cursor changes to hand over the entire bounding box of a path, instead of over the path itself plus some tolerance around it (options.cursortolerance). The same works OK without your patch. directory reorg

Hello all, I started the directory reorganization by first creating all the folder outlined in Bryce's document in the WIKI. Please pay attention to if I break anything in the next day or so while I incrementally move our directory structure over to the proposed, and watch the Changelog for changes, as that will tell my tale. Packaging and new RPM's

Hi all, Build issues: 1. the default configure script builds both static and dynamic libraries. Any reason ? I did --static=no and cut the build time significantly. Unless explained otherwise, I see no need for static libs on FC/RH. 2. I'll gladly do the OSX dmg files, but want someone to test these before having them sent into the wild. Catch me on jabber or IRC if you can test. Hopefully, we will have SuSE9.0 RPMS before long. I've added Red Hat 9 rpms as well as the Fedora ones on sourceforge. Cheers, Peter

XMP support

Jon, I read through the XMP support package. I wonder if you are developing our XMP metadata support as a separate library, that others projects can use, like the SCRIBUS, GIMP, and sodipodi. If you haven't read all the XMP hype from Adobe, it is pretty cool overall. http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp I know that to develop support for it as a separate library is more work, but I really think that it is something that would benefit all these projects (but this is my hopeful thinking). reJon -- Jonathan Phillips <jon@...15...>

How to get Inkscape to produce <line> instead of <path>?

When I draw a straight line in Inkscape, it generates a <path> element and never a <line>. If I import an existing SVG file with a <line>, edit and save, the <line> changes to <path>. Is it possible to have Inkscape output <line>? Should I care? Thanks, -Jason

I think we really need to get OS X DMG files, or an installer for OS X releases. The majority of OS X folks do not understand ./configure;make;make install.
