I've been testing out the powerstroke LPE, very important for vector art making! Not sure what is the proper place to post this. Should I file bug reports? Are they features, not bugs? Issues: 1. Create a single closed path. Apply powerstroke. The powerstroked path shoots out extreme points. These extremities go away when you move the powerstroke node away from initial vertex, and return when node appears to go back to initial vertex 2. seems to break on combined paths, apparently you may only use powerstroke on single paths? Make one path, make a hole (combining with an enclosed path). Choose powerstroke, and the inner hole path stays, but the outer path vanishes, though its nodes remain. Wishlist for powerstroke: 1. combine with offset off a base line 2. have angle nodes, not just width nodes. This would allow easier integration with the calligraphy tool 3. Miter caps for when curvature circles don't intersect are pretty ugly. Perhaps there could be an alternate extension, like blending curvature from one side of the path with the other side (of the same segment), or arbitrarily making a kind of steeple, not strictly adhering to curvature, sticking off the miter, so corners always end up being pointy, instead of chopped off. -Tom ----- tomlechner.com

Cache has performance issues

Hi list A couple of weeks ago I posted a message regarding Inkscapes caching behaviour and also filed a bug report on launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1267208). It turned out program response is far quicker with caching disabled in the source code. I'd happily provide a sample file or whatever is needed to visualize the described effect if requested. I think Inkscapes user experience could be noticeably improved by some simple modifications (e.g. an option to turn off caching via GUI) but in my opinion the caching systems needs quite a bit of refactoring. Unfortunately I lack the necessary insight and experience on the program to come up with a proper solution myself. I would be willing to give it a shot though if someone could point me to a good resource on how caching is designed and implemented (and would be willing to review my changes). With the new release coming closer I really hope somebody shows some interest in this. It does make a difference. Thanks. Paul

Hi Guys, When running Inkscape.exe on inkscape_r13349-201405111208 I just downloaded from the nightlies to give it a go and check the new LPE's I got nothing but a blinking cursor in a dosbox. That can't be the intention. However, I was wondering if I'd need anything special for this build I happen not to have. FYI running a win7 32 bit and this is a first for me. By the way I loved that new chamfer video and since I haven't been doing any testing for a while I'd love to get a go with the new toys. Many exiting changes that I am really looking forward to get to test. I am interested in doing a splash screen for the new release, but will need to know what the new stuff is, testing didn't get that far ;-) Keep up the good work! Cheers, Jelle

Starting the 0.91 Bug Hunt

For the Frost, one of our main activities is going to be the Bug Hunt. The purpose of the Bug Hunt is to improve our release's quality by tending to some of the many bugs people have reported in the past. Our first bug hunt focused on regressions found in 0.91. We still care a lot about regressions, of course, but this bug hunt is open season on ALL bugs ever reported. But reports about problems in the website, documentation, translation, packaging, admin, and codebase are all eligible targets, since every one of those areas is vital to achieving a high quality release. Only Wishlist bugs are omitted. The tally is taken of all bugs closed since the week Frost started (i.e. May 5th). 3, 6, 9, or 12 points are given for low, medium, high, and critical bug priorities respectively. +1 point will be given per year of age since the bug was filed, to encourage us to tend to older bug reports that have languished in the tracker. Points will be doubled for all regression-tagged bug reports, even if they were regressions in previous releases. A Bug of the Week will be announced each week, as we did in the last bug hunt. However, to switch things up a bit, I'm going to have the person who closed the highest total score of bugs in a given week be the person that selects the Bug of the Week for the subsequent week. occasionally misleading file references in Merge requests.

this a source of some confusion, and also annoyance to me, so consider this to be a rant. I often try to see who has most recently changed a file, like guides_creator.py. So I end up at the address: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/changes?filter_fil… where it tells me that the file has been changed in rev 13007. So I click on that link, and it tells me that this rev actually changed this file, as expected. Then I see a Merge request in rev 13221, so I click on that link and discover that this particular file was not changed in that rev, even though the previous page said it was changed. Then I see a Merge request in rev 12404, so I click on that link and discover that this particular file was changed in that rev, as expected. So sometimes the file actually was changed and sometimes not. ............................................... Similar experience with file /src/extension/dbus/document-interface.cpp start at the location: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/changes?filter_fil… go to Merge request 12476 and discover that this file was not actually modified in this merge, nor in Merge request 13221, but it was modified in Merge request 13340 as expected. .............................................. this is very confusing. The problem seems to occur only in Merge requests. Does anyone know why some Merge requests lead to false references to file changes that never occurred? Problem whith multiple commit in experimental

I do 3 commits instead one in experimental. I do whith a lot of care but my usual workflow of commit->merge->push isnt ok in shared enviroment. I think i realy need to use update->commit->push but cleaning for give this way to my first push, go wrong. The final push is ok. Sorry. Jabiertxof.

Circle Tool: How to Fix the Size

Hey Devs, I was working on an artwork[1] which needed specific sized segments using the circular tool. The problem is that there is no way to specify the size of an arc, just the start and stop degrees. What I need was a percentage value for size. I also found it impossible to adjust the arc's position. Object-Rotate puts the center inside it's bbox, not at the center of the arc. There's no key to press which could make both start and end nodes move together (that I know of). I ended up carefully adjusting start and end values together in increments. 64-bit: size of vectors and the like

Hi all, TL,DR: please use std::size_t instead of e.g. unsigned int for STL's size() return values. A quick message. I just fixed a bug in buildtool.cpp that lead to an infinite loop when compiled for 64-bit. It happened because of a loop test on a string.size() with an unsigned int counter type. Changing the counter type to std::size_t fixed the issue. To be honest, I do not actually fully understand why it went into an infinite loop. But hope this is an example to motivate you to use the correct type to store / work with the result of STL's size() return parameters. Thanks, Johan

Post LGM notes on PDF and Inkscape2Scribus workflow

During last LGM we have discussed on future development of Inkscape. Among the tasks, we pointed the print-ready PDF request. I mentionned we have 2 opportunities : - as scribus does a print-ready PDF, try to learn from that to develop our own. Discussions with Franz and Andreas have pointed it was not hard in the principle but that cairo might not do it so soon and that Scribus don't provide a library whoch could easily implement it into Inkscape. Andreas has shown interest in helping in a way, and Kryzstof seem to be on the way - i also said that actually we usually import Inkscape documents into Scribus and make the PDF from it. Of course, this is far from being a perfect workflow for it needs few minutes to be done and redone when needed just for an "export". Plus we have issues with Scribus SVG import features which sometimes means come back to a standard PNG export, which is not desired when we decide to use vector. I gave the filter example and this one is really not it the Roadmap because there are many other more important feature to get implement before and that filters are not in PDF so they might be rasterized anyway. Scribus don't provide a command line option that would allow PDF generation on the fly from Inkscape. The situation is improving because Scribus is itself getting getter in SVG support but there are no real plans so that we have no idea when it could be done and the guy working mainly on Postscript and SVG may not be available in the next months. I think that create a better Workflow with Scribus is interesting for many other reasons that get Print-ready PDF for Inkscape. Especially, we'd anyway need to import often vector drawing in Scribus for complex layout. Actually Inkscape is missing many interesting things such as text styles, flowing text around objects, multipage... So we should not imagine Inkscape could replace Scribus as easily. May be that one of the easiest would be exploring by ourselves especially give Scribus files that it can easily read : i guess it's will be easier to get an exporter than an importer - Provide a "Scribus SVG" which contains bitmap data or links so that we could flatten or rasterize everything scribus won't support, choosing the resolution. I didn't check if this could be done in python, especially accessing primitive filters - Provide an exchange format that could help and i'm thinking of OpenRaster. Scribus just begun implemented it in March and i've done some test on it. There is actually no vector support, but this format might be a could beginning point to work with many other softwares too like Krita or Mypaint. I think it would worth to put the effort on ora more that on XCF esport, for example. I can help on this as i can, but i'm not a programmer so i'm slow in coding. I more used in python but i've really done little patch in C++ though never for Inkscape. CU pygmee

Inverted Linked Path Param in LPE...??

Dear all, I’m a little puzzled at this. Does anyone know why when we define path param by linking, the resulting path param is inverted? Compared to pasted path, the resulting param path’s orientation remains the same. An example using Bend Path LPE is shown below. This behavior happens to other LPEs that use path param as well. Also, does anyone know if we can restrict the path param to link / copy path’s control points *exactly* at the same locations as it’s drawn? Thank you. The reason this task needs done in the Chill phase is to give translators plenty of time during Frost and Freeze. External tutorials are also worth updating of course but aren't schedule-critical so not tracked here. Ryan, your name was mentioned as someone with an eye on the tutorials, would you mind summarizing what work is already in process relating to tutorials for the Inkscape package? Bryce

Adding multiple knot holders to the same LPE effect

Dear Inkscape-devel, I am trying to figure out what the best way to add multiple user-defined knot holders to the LPE is. Let’s say I want to allow lpe-tangent_to_curve to have multiple tangent knots that I can slide independently, or lpe-knot to have multiple independent knots instead of shifting between each intersection by dragging a single knot around. What is the best practice of doing this? The mechanism of implementing addKnotHolderEntities(), knot_set(), knot_get() seems to support the case that I have just one knot to insert (per class defined). I am not sure if it can support multiple knots (of the same kind) that work independently from each other this way. Another related question is, what’s is best practice to store multiple ScalarParam’s or VectorParam's that basically do the same thing? Again, let’s say I want to implement lpe-tangent_to_curve so that I can look at multiple tangent lines independently. Would you use, let’s say, std::vector<VectorParam> or ArrayParam<VectorParam>? If someone can point me to existing LPE code that does something similar I’d also appreciate, since I haven’t found it so far. Experimental feature enabling

Hey all, Mainly because I got tired of having to modify multiple files if I ever do a "bzr revert", I just went ahead and simplified a couple other places we had experimental stuff in addition to Tavmjong's. The LPE Tool (Geometric Tool/Technical Tool... I don't recall the outward facing name) and all "test" or experimental LPEs can now be enabled in configure.ac by uncommenting line 110. This has replaced enabling these in toolbox.cpp and effect.cpp respectively. Yes, I could have added a mega "enable everything" line, but keeping the SVG2 stuff and LPE stuff separated seemed reasonable enough. Hopefully it makes it a little easier for others too... Hi to all, im developing a filleting LPE tool [1]. For the moment and based in the work in powerstroke i have a LPE that: * Create a Knot for each cusp node, with movement restricted to a curve. * Update Knots at path change/add/sustract/reverse/append/erase Any body can point me about the usage of arcTo from Geom::Path? The points i know are: start of arc, and end of arc, and think allways is 180ª arc. Other points/values need to be calculated. I have something in my mind but i want to have a expertice opinion. New SVG compliance testing software

Hi! I have extended current software for running SVG compatipility test suite. Now it supports storing and reviewing test results by a web application. Test results for revision 13330 are available online at http://tboczkowski.linuxpl.info/svg_compliance/compliance/trunk. The general idea is to store the test results for selected revisions at server. There they can be reviewed manually. If result images of a test case are equal, they share the same mark. Client-side code [1] is based on Guiu Rocafort's solution. I added a module that packs the output directory, adds some metadata and sends them to server. Instead of provided input files, I use vanilla W3C test cases from [2]. Server-side application [3] is implemented as Django project. It stores information about test cases, test results and image marks in database. Tests results can be browsed and reviewed by web interface. Changing image mark is available for logged-in users only. To aid in reviewing images, I used image comparison functions from resemble.js library. When inkscape generated image is first clicked, it is replaced by raw difference with reference image. Second click switches to a diff ignoring antialiasing. Third click returns to original image. The next step will be to implement the generation of reference image library at server. It would consist of known passes and known fails. When a local testsuite will be run, client will download up-to-date library and compare test results to reference images. It can also calculate regressions and new passes since the latest revision stored at server. I have noticed that test results are greatly influenced by used fonts (e.g [4]). Since the test fonts are supplied with W3C test suite, it would be nice to use them. Does Inkscape support SVG and Woff fonts? If so, is there a command line switch or environment variable allowing to select the font directory? Do you think it would be sensible to add such option? I haven't yet rated the images.
