Has it only been ONE year? Yep, today, October 26, 2004 is Inkscape's first anniversary. This time last year we registered Inkscape with SourceForge and poured ourselves into converting it over to C++. Our first public announcement of the founding of the Inkscape project occurred a bit over a week later, on Nov 6th, to be followed closely by our first release to Freshmeat on Nov 10th. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3416220&forum_id=3970 It's been an amazing year with the project. We've had five very solid releases, each a major advancement over the previous. We've taken a project from scratch to being included standard in nearly every major Linux distro. Tens of thousands of people use Inkscape today! Most importantly, we've succeeded in building a very open and prolific development team, and have been fortunate in gaining a very supportive and friendly user community. For the year to come, I think we can look forward to gaining solutions to many of the features and issues we're worrying about right now like PDF, extensions, Gtkmm, etc. CSS will probably be a major effort, but one we'll gain a huge amount of benefit from. I think (hope) we'll see expansion of Inkscape's audience to include technical drawing in a big way. I'd like to put some effort into building up a healthy donation system since we already have users asking about that. I also hope we can continue to expand the size of the development team and the userbase. We should continue to encourage users to peek under the hood and fiddle with stuff; I'm hopeful the extensions system will also provide an easy way for users to get involved. We would also do well to expand our efforts at demoing and presenting Inkscape at trade shows and conferences. Congratulations and thank you to everyone that's helped us get this far, and look forward to seeing what Inkscape can achieve in 2005. :-) Bryce

This feature has been a high demand item for as long as I can remember, so I think users are going to be quite pleased to have it. However, we've got some further development to do to get it ready for primetime. Mental has outlined the tasks needed to achieve completion on it in the roadmap (and appended below). Please consider lending a hand on one or two of the tasks that haven't been taken so far, with implementing, testing, or documenting. win32 snapshots

I'm mirroring Bob's win32 snapshots up to inkscape.org/win32-snap/ every 3 hours now. (Only the most recent 10.) This might be best to list first in the Downloads page for higher bandwidth for people, and help ease the load on Daniel's link. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

CVS won't run

Hello, I've been having the same problem for quite some time; the CVS version compiles but then it doesn't run. It just hogs the cpu and nothing happens and I have to kill it. Stable version works fine. There seem to be no error messages during compilation. I've tried several times, latest was a few hours ago. If you'd like any kind of information about my system libraries etc, just ask. I'm on gentoo linux. I'd like to solve this! Thanks, Johan Forsberg

I'd like to rename configure.in to configure.ac so it's more "correct". Does anyone have any objections to this? Are there any other autoconf/make cleanups that need doing? -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

sf inkscape web directory

Well, I've been looking around at the inkscape directory, and noticed some interesting things. The SF docs say there is a 100M quota in the group area. However, the "quota" command doesn't show any configured quotas. Additionally, we're using over 200M of storage. (148M of that is the doxygen docs.) I'm worried that keeping 30 days of CVS snapshots will compound our disk utilization. (As well as possible win32 mirrors.) Unit fun

I was doing some low-level hacking on image support and DPI, and found an interesting thing Images I created in The GIMP and set to 72 DPI there came out to have a stored value of 2835 pixels per meter. On the other hand, a png that had been created in Inkscape a while back had a stored value of 2834 pixels per meter. One saved today had no chunk for DPI, at least not before the image data.
