Working on the Text tool part of the user manual, i've just wondered why this tool has to be set in a separate though it doesn't have any options. Would it not be more useable to put this options in the Option Bar ? Cedric

Call for bug check

Can anyone on Windows check the following bugs for me? 925033 win32: non-ascii filenames still don't work 934062 win32: international characters in home path 1052307 Saving fails because of UTF-8 Error In generall, the steps to check these are 1) run a version of Inkscape that is belived to have the bug 2) try to reproduce the bug 3) report if it was reproduceable or not 4) once the bug is being reproduced, update to a version of Inkscape that should have it fixed 5) try to reproduce the bug the same way as worked for step 2 6) report if it is still reproduceable. With that in mind, I mainly need to get people to verify the bug via steps 1 through 3. Getting them checked on Windows 95/98/ME and also on Windows NT/2K/XP is helpful, as they are very different bases. Thanks, Jon

cmyk-profile and pdf export

Hey Bulia, Mental, Bryce, Alan and all you other active inkscapers!* There's a feature request for cmyk and spot colors somewhere in the bug tracker. However, if you guys could spend some thoughts on how it might be implemented in inkscape that'd be cool. I'm using inkscape for semi professional work (doing work for ESTIEM, which is the European organisation of students of industrial engineering and management, as well as some stuff for our students government...** and usually need the stuff printed by professional printers who are asking for cmyk profiles. Now since the native format of svg just is rgb, I wonder (as I did in the bug tracker) if it is possible to define the colors used in the defs and add a cmyk equivalent in a inkscape tag. The user would manipulate the cmyk equivalent and inkscape would recaculate the rgb value... something like that. Then on ps eps or pdf (see below) export, the cmyk values would be embedded instead of the rgb values. Now concerning pdfs. I tried to import my svg flyer to scribus. That worked fine, really, exept that fonts weren't recognized, but the workaround is to convert them to curves. Now scribus 1.2 really screws up on resizing groups in a way that they exceed the page boundaries... causing me to start all over again a few times. Then -- as I was warned -- gradients with the end points of the object are not exported to pdf and the color output viewed with adobe acrobat afterwards seemed really poor for cmyk. This is why I'm very much hoping for smoothly working pdf output directly from inkscape. That would just be so cool, and for me a lot more important than many other things you can work around (oh well, baseline grid would really (!) help as well -- yes Corel doesn't have it, but that doesn't mean you don't need it :-) --, but other than that inkscape is already such a good app) Ok I know you're busy, but I needed to put this down, because I just talked to another ESTIEM designer about PR stuff and am wrapping up a document where I mention Inkscape (along with Corel and Freehand and Illustrator) as the program of choice for vector editing. Saying this, can I point to some gtk installation tutorial? I know there is a setup now for inkscape, but don't I also need the gtk stuff first? Anyways, take care! An important milestone has been reached: After the many recent and not-so-recent improvements to shapes (not only stars!) I hereby announce that the four shape tools and the corresponding shape types (rects, ellipses, stars, spirals) are, in my opinion, the first component of the program to reach maturity. In other words, Inkscape shapes are clearly ahead of the competition (and by competition, I don't mean Sodipodi) both in features and in usability, implement everything that I can possibly think of, and are virtually bugless. In still other words, they are ready for 1.0. With that in mind, I decided to document this component painstakingly and uncompromisingly. The new "Shapes" tutorial is larger than either Basic or Advanced; it contains detailed descriptions of shape tools and shape types, many creative tips for using them, and some rather beautiful examples. Not-yet mature things will likely either receive a very cursory treatment in the documentation (if absolutely necessary) or not be documented at all. The reason is not only the desire to minimize rewriting as components are cleaned up, but the simple fact that I hate to write about things which are broken. Sorry. I prefer to fix things first :) Correspondingly, the old shape-related sections are removed from the Advanced tutorial. Eventually, the Advanced tutorial will be eliminated, its pieces becoming extended tutorials, each covering a much narrower topic.

note for all on character encodings

I've just got a minor note everyone who might deal with character encodings (probably most of us) need to be aware of. We're basically dealing with three different string encodings (not just two). 1) The system/GTK+ encoding, which is UTF-8 2) The locale encoding 3) The filesystem encoding Now, though the latter two could often be set to the same, they do not have to be. I'm going through cleaning up some file operations, and in that it seems that there could be a few subtle bugs hiding here and there, depending on the understanding of encodings and differences. For the most part, we want strings we deal with to be UTF-8 as much as possible. When strings come in or go out through calls that might generate or need something other than UTF-8, we should translat at that point. So we end up needing UTF-8 for all but some filename IO stuff.

When I see the work done by Bulia for his tutorials, I much more see this document as an example (a kind of Inkscape in action) and it can't be compared to the complete and exaustive presentations of the fonctionnalities brought by Inkscape tutorials. -> I'll create an "Examples: Inkscape in action" page on the Wiki, and add this there. Guys from www.linuxgraphic.org have issued a lot of excellent tutorials/examples : I'll ask them permission to perform some other translations and then bring them on the same wiki page if they agree.
