Hi All, I use a combination of: -Adobe PS-printerdriver, creating ps-output -Redmon, printer-driver redirection -Ghostscript, for ps-pdf convertion With confortable output result. As far as I can see on a quick read, the best way for Linux users to go is with Scribus but that looks like a hairy way for Win users and not worth the effort at this stage. I have used some of the pdf print drivers and the results are woeful. Win2pdf is aweful, JAWS PDF is aweful. Have any win users been successful in this area? I've even pulled files out of Inkscape and put them into CorelDraw and output CDpdfs but again results are lousy. In fact even getting them into CorelDraw is a hassle. NEW: blurred shadows

Here's the real reason why I implemented "create bitmap copy": Via prefs, you can specify an external filter that will be run on the PNG file after it is exported but before it is imported back. I use this for grayscaling and blurring the image to create a soft drop shadow for any object. The script itself is share/extensions/inkscape-shadow.sh. It's not integrated into the extensions or plugin system in any way (Ted, I may need your help on this). The script requires Imagemagick 6.x to be installed. To enable this, you set in your preferences.xml: <group id="createbitmap" minsize="250" filter="/full/path/to/inkscape-shadow.sh" filter_param1="20" /> In filter=, you specify either the full path to the script, or just "inkscape-shadow.sh" if the script is in your PATH. The script receives the image filename as the first parameter and the filter_param1 as the second parameter (more parameters can be added). This particular script interprets that as the blur radius in pixels, but of course that depends on the script you use. Now, I'm not going to provide a GUI for the blurred shadows feature, for these reasons: 1. You have to carry around the shadow PNGs along your SVG. It's inconvenient, and the PNGs may be much larger than the SVG. 2. The shadows are not resolution-independent and are not updated automatically. For all this, we need to support the gaussian blur SVG filter (a standard SVG feature). But since we don't have any filter support yet, hence this hack. 3. Both Batik and Adobe have (different) problems with displaying PNGs with alpha transparency. (Much like the Internet Exploder - shame on them! :) Still, for those who desperately need blurred shadows right now (such as myself), this feature works well enough. Try it out, it's fun.

NEW: Make a bitmap copy

The new command, Make a bitmap copy (Alt+B), exports a bitmap of the selected objects (hiding all other objects of the document), saves it as a PNG file alongside the document, and imports it back into the document. This can be used e.g. to replace objects with gradients or transparency by bitmaps for printing or PS/EPS export.

Hello all! The Open Clip Art Project is in need of your screenshots of clip art submitted to the project. An Open Clip Art Library developer, Jonadab, has constructed a script for the site (www.openclipart.org), that takes your screenshots (any size, but 1024 by 768 pixels preferred) into a thumnail, posts it to the screenshots page and then puts it into rotation on the main page of the site for the random screenshot viewer. Well... I finally got my new hard drive functional, and at the recommendation of other developer(s) went and put on Fedora Core 3 test 2 First, is anyone else on this? Second, I encountered a problem with libsigc++. The latest versions won't compile for me. 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 fail. However, 2.0.3 works. So second, has anyone else seen problems building 2.0.4 and 2.0.5? (my compiler is gcc version 3.4.2 20040907 (Red Hat 3.4.2-2))

NEW: current style & misc usability

* All object-creating tools can use the current style for new objects. The current style is the style that you last applied to an object (when changing its fill, stroke, transparency, etc). For example, after you paint some object black, new shapes you create will be black too. Alternatively, a tool can use its own style for new objects, which is not affected by document editing. The Preferences dialog lets you choose between using the current style (shape tools by default) and the tool's own style (text, pen, and pencil by default) for any tool, as well as to set the style of a tool from current selection. The "Apply to" list in the Fill & Stroke dialog is removed; this dialog now always sets the style of the selection. * Double-clicking a tool button calls up the Preferences dialog open on the page of that tool. * The Preferences dialog remembers and reopens the page that was active the last time you used it.

SPObject coding

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to implement an SPObject? I'd like to correctly hook the metadata repr's to something that can receive proper signals, etc. Right now the metadata is a giant flaming hack, and it looks like I could really solve a bunch of the bugs by making it act like other repr-based things. Where can I look for some _easy_ examples of how the SPObject stuff works, and what the minimum requirement is for function implementations, etc? -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

Looking at the stuff we have slated for Milestone 6 (0.40), there seem to be several different major efforts going on at once. I see at least: * AST * gtkmmification * boehm collector * layers * text rewrite I think we need to tease these apart, and perform triage to push some of these into a subsequent milestone. -mental
