Try out on windows

Hi, I would like to show Inkscape to some people but they only run Windows XP. Which Windows build should I use? Does the Inkscape-0.39-1.win32.exe on sourceforge work well? Minor upgrade to autotracing

A few weeks ago, at the suggestion of one of our fine users, I added a Potrace image-to-vector tracing engine to Inkscape. Initially, it just traced the image according to a hardcoded brightness threshold. Later I added a threshold adjustment. Today, there is a new toy, "Canny Edge Detection", also sometimes called "optimal edge detection." This should help with the tracing of more subtly colored images, and not just by simple brightness. Inkscape helping OpenClipArt.org

I noticed that we don't have anything to tell Inkscape users that they can get more patterns from the openclipart.org site. Long term there is great potential for collaboration in all sorts of different ways, but I have a simple idea to start with: Presumably Inkscape will ship with at least a few templates, perhaps five small sample gradients, and five small sample patterns. Here is where helping OpenClipArt.org bit comes in - why not just put in a pattern that points people there? NEW: "transform with object" toggle buttons

* The preferences that control scaling of stroke widths and rectangle corners, as well as transforming gradient and pattern fills with the object, are now represented by four toggle buttons in the selector's controls panel for easy access. * Gradients no longer behave weird when a path with gradient fill is transformed. Now gradients either transform with the object or remain unmoved, depending on the user setting (toggle button in selector controls). This setting affects grouped objects too.

Notice that there is now a copy of gdb.exe in the install directory. In the future, when testers find a crashing bug, they can instead open a console, cd into the inkscape directory, and type "gdb inkscape" then "run" ... then crash Inkscape, go to the console again, and type "bt" ...and give us the output. If they aren't good at consoles, they can douple-click gdb.exe, and at the 'gdb>' prompt type "target exec inkscape.exe" then "run" ....as before.. This way our testers can be real testers and participants of the project. Several times this has allowed us to fix bugs quickly, and we really appreciate it. Bob
