Inkscape and the Gimp, gradients.

Those of you who are also on the OpenClipart.org mailing list may have noticed that the Gimp now allows the use of SVG Gradients. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148127 The support is in CVS and there has not yet been a release that has included but there should be another 2.1.x release soon. Sven Neuman added the feature, and I'm well pleased. Now I'll be able to use the same files for both Inkscape and Gimp and use a standardised file format. The gradient file can contain a single gradient or multiple gradients. The parser has some flexibility with regards to the formatting used by the gradients. The gradients are read only for now. Another recently added feature that I requested was support for using standard file formats for Patterns. As GDKPixbuf was used and because there is an option to use librsvg to add SVG support to GDKpixbuf it should be possible to use SVG patterns directly in the Gimp too. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=140443 Futher testing of and feedback on the SVG Gradient support would be very much appreciated. DND support could be added in time but it will require work from Inkscape. Sven would like to do this if Inkscape developers will do the necessary work on their side, and he asked me to pass on that request. I'm in a bit of a hurry otherwise i would have phrased this better and more clearly. There is also the distinct possibility that this account will be temporarily unavailable due to maintainance for the next few days so I may have to catch up on Monday or sign up with a different account. using SVG-View Widget in gtkmm apps

First let me say what a great job the whole development team is doing - Inkscape is one of the best open source projects going. And it lets a non-artist like me make decent looking icons - it's simply fun to use. I would like to use SVG in a gtkmm geographic mapping application - is the SVG View Widget part of the gtk toolset now ? Does it use librsvg to blt back the svg or does it have it's own renderer ? (I tried to follow the code but got lost). Thks. John

compiling CVS on windows

Hi all, Just to let you know current CVS doesnt want to compile on native windows currently, got the latest libaries from bobs site, tried dling the latest mingw, but no joy. keep getting a bunch of token errors. external binaries ?

Hello, I use inkscape almost everydays. that is a really great application. I convert all the windows users at my office to linux users. That was not that hard. I was 'forced' :-) to convert them from paintshoppro/illustrator to inkscape. That was quite easy too. Inkscape is such an friendly-user-app. We use it for cartography means : drawing polygons on rasters images. ok let's come to the question : Would it be possible to 'execute' an external binary on the active document? i read every mails for such a long time and aware (it's good to be aware) of the coming extension stuff. how will it work ? would it be possible to provide a 'simple' binary that do the job and just put it in some place ? (like C or C++ or whatever) what could the junction with inkscape be ? will all the changes made by the binary be updated in the preview immedilately ? how could that come from a menu in inkscape ? ok... why all these question ?? in fact i will have some times and needs in adding new features related to GIS (of course openGis specs compliant) and some new 'magic' operation such areas and so... the problems is i am not a c nor c++ prog as anyone on the list. I am realy used to php and web. I started to implement these operations on php-web-based : you upload the file and the not-that-magic-stuff was done. i am considering to make a php extension for that and therefore it could be, for some, inkscape-inside implemented. BUT (here comes the BUT again..) i can not dive into inkscape (i have not enought time to do it) and i am not sufficiently competent to do it and i didn't succeded in having a configure-make-ready-box for inkscape (very much dependances on a redhat 9). the easy way would be such an extension stuff and when it works as expected someone with much more skills could add a new stuff in inkscape open-gis related. Sorry for that long and bad-english mail. What do you think of it ? hervé

When I use the inkscape win32 0.39 release (either zip or exe) I get the xml document attributes: inkscape:version 0.39cvs I wonder why? Adib.

File-open dialog with a text field

Here is a screenshot of a first attempt at adding a text entry of the file name to the file open dialog. http://troi.titan-aeu.com/~rjamison/inkscape/files/filedialog2.png The events for selection changed--->text field and text field <return> ---->selection ...have already been connected. I am sure that we will tweak this a lot during this cycle, but at least this shows that modifications to suit our needs can easily be accomplished. What I am really anticipating is the use of the same code for all architectures. Bob

Thoughts about Patterns

Hi everybody, Working on the Edit Menu part of the Manual (done but in french only, english version on CVS before end of July), i've made different tests on clone and patterns. These are great functionnalities. One may find pattern samples in the joined file. May be it could be incorporated as a library (the same way markers did). I leave it to our great developers. But, if alloweded, some things appeared to be difficult for me : - first of all : when creating many patterns, it is hard to remember the creation order, so that i've been 'confused' in the fillsettings dialog. Because there is no preview of the pattern in the dropdown menu, one may wish to name the pattern without using XML editor (some don't like coding!! or don't understand SVG at all) : may be the best could be to make a dialog appear to enter a name just after using the Edit/tile command. - second : The original object is set to rect filled with the pattern. It is OK, but often, i don't need it anymore in the drawing. It could be hidden. - third : (and it is not due to pattern filling i think but) but when a pattern is not used anymore, it is automatically cleared from defs. But should I always really want to remove it ? The autoClean functionnality is very good, but we may find rules about its use. I will now be working on a Symbol (clone) Library. I'll see from Sodipodi, I guess they've done may things this way since few months. Thanks a lot. Cedric

Compiling libGC with c++ support

Hello, Everyone :) While attempting to update Inkscape from CVS, I discovered the new dependency on libgc. I eventually found what I think is the right package: libGC-0.3-1.tar After untarring it, I ran ./configure --help, and I found nothing about how to compile libgc with c++ support. I proceeded to read README and INSTALL in the libGC directory, and I found nothing helpful. I then checked the Inkscape news groups, where I found references to the new libgc dependency, references to compiling with c++ support, but nothing about HOW to compile with c++ support. My next step was to subscribe to this list and ask this question :) I am running Fedora Core 2 with all official updates installed. This is a full installation, not an upgrade, and I chose to install EVERY package. Also, the prefix that I am attempting to compile libgc for is the same one that I am compiling Inkscape for: /usr If I've left anything out, please let me know, and I'll be glad to provide that information. For your information, I had been successfully compiling Inkscape on this system up till and including my last attempt preceding the addition of the libgc dependency. Oooops, almost forgot the error message I get when I attempt to configure Inkscape. I got the exact same message before and after my attempts at installing libgc: checking for GC_malloc in -lgc... no configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector), built with C++ support, is needed to compile inkscape In conclusion, my installation of libGC appeared to succeed, but since I didn't know how to build it with C++ support, I got the error message quoted above. Anyway, let me know if you need any more information on this. Steven P. Ulrick

To outline?

I've looked, but couldn't find where the message 'Select some paths to outline.' is used in the UI. The translators comment says that '"to outline" means "to convert stroke to path"'. Isn't this the same as the 'Convert stroke to path' command? The reason I'm asking is that I'm wondering what words to use in my translation. -- Karl Ove Hufthammer
