Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. * The per-object selection cues can now be displayed in any tool, so that you can see what is selected at all times. You can switch these cues on or off for each tool in the Preferences dialog (the default is on for all tools). Also, the cues can now be displayed either as dashed bounding boxes or as diamond marks in the object's top left corner. * The dropper tool now works always (previously it only worked in conjunction with the Fill and Stroke dialog). Click to set the fill color of selection, Shift+click to set the stroke color. Also, dropper can pick either the visible color (without transparency) or the actual object color (including transparency), depending on a preference setting. Linux "DCO"

At work we just had an informal presentation about the new "Developer's Certificate of Origin (DCO)" that Linus is adopting for Linux (see http://osdl.org/newsroom/press_releases/2004/2004_05_24_beaverton.html). Basically, what I took from this was that the reason for this is because the Linux development process includes integration of patches submitted by various developers that are integrated by "lieutenants". In this process, the identity of the contributor can be lost if the lieutenant just takes the code into their own patchset. Interestingly, this wasn't driven by the SCO lawsuit - apparently it's been on Linus' todo list for the past year but hadn't bubbled up to the top until now. I had wondered if it had something to do with OSDL, but it turns out it doesn't; Linus just wanted OSDL to 'lightening rod' questions from reporters, and OSDL has offered to help with some kind of bk tool for databasing the contributor info, but that's still in the abstract at this point. This process may be useful for other projects if they have a similar development model to Linux. Being able to trace the origin of all code contributions can be critical if the project ever runs into legal questions at some point. For Inkscape, though, I think our processes are already sufficient. Because we use the patch tracker for externally contributed patches, we have a Sourceforge ID associated with each patch; we have cvs history for all direct contributors. Up 'til now we've allowed non-logged in patch submissions, however for traceability purposes I've disabled this. Our processes for updating Changelog, AUTHORS, and the release notes, also ensure that pretty much all non-trivial changes get documented. I know we sometimes get patches to the mailing list or to individuals; it would probably be wise to adopt the practice of encouraging these individuals to submit it to the patch tracker -- otherwise make doubly sure to record their name and email in the patch tracker and/or Changelog. Disabling the anonymous patch submission will also ensure we always have the ability to re-contact the patch submitter for questions or whatever, which I think is a benefit in and of itself, but if anyone has concerns about this, lemme know. Most of the anonymous submissions so far have been translations (mainly the Catalan and Japanese translations.) Bryce

Incorrect link on Mailing Lists page

I noticed this morning that the Mail Lists page: http://inkscape.org/mailing_lists.php has a minor typo. The link for 'inkscape-user' is given as: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=36227 ...which is the same as the Tracker list. It should be: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=37513 Just thought I would let someone know. Bob

It's not removed, it's now in global preferences (Ctrl+Shift+P, Windows tab). Hi, I worked a little bit with markers and now have two thing about the "Stroke style" Dialog. The first thing is, is it possible to define my own Pattern? And the second, the list of makers is quite long and I think that it will grow in the future. So, I think we need a new widget, something like the widget gimp uses for the fonts, for the markers. MfG Tobias P.S. Why have you removed the "Zoom when window is resized" button?
