learning via wiki: preferences

Now I want to add a preference value for the default nudge distance so I can implement absolute-value movements with arrow keys, as planned. I started to figure this out but got stuck. I thought I coule use the wiki to speed this up. Strange - I just checked out the cvs (with my patch already applied, thanks to Bryce) and it works for me. Just select one or more nodes of a shape in the node editor (F2) and use arrows (both normal arrows and keypad arrows work), or arrows with shift if you want it to move 10 times faster. Can anyone else please check this? I found that sometimes arrow keys don't work because other windows steal focus. For example a docked toolbar may steal focus (even though it's docked!), and the zoom value field in the bottom left corner also loves to grab the focus and not let it go. This is an old problem (see "usability" programming task on Sodipodi site). I will see what I can do about it - but I'm afraid it's too complex for me, so if a real programmer could look into that, that would be nice. Basically, we need non-canvas windows to send focus and keystrokes to the (current) canvas whenever possible. I just uploaded a patch to the sf patch tracker enabling arrow keys in node editor. This turned out to be simpler than I expected. Perhaps I will implement more of http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net/index.php3?section=development/tasks/keyboa… when I have time. Please review the patch and let me know if it will be accepted. Now, a question for your FAQ: why the fork? Was Lauris unwilling to collaborate? Being very busy lately I could not check the mailing list often, so please enlighten me. I understand that sometimes a fork may be the only thing to do, but was it really necessary in this case? What are you planning to do that was impossible to do without a fork? Since SourceForge CVS can be iffy for some people, I've cut a source tarball, that can be gotten here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438 Unless anyone has any objections, we can consider it in feature-freeze for the next few days. Patches that fix compilation bugs, crashes, or solve packaging issues are encouraged at this time. We'll also be checking the bug tracker for critical or easily fixed issues. Bryce

hello, I was using sodipodi for svg and gis. for what i understood, it seems that the forked inkscape will, in the future match more my goals. I would like to help with some gis stuffs : area of path (closed ones), area of intersection of path. intersection of path (with beziers curves) scales and so more.... I am not a C developper, but i started to learn a little as wome of my code will merge in a php extension (work one use twice.) will inkscape turn into C++ ? (i didn't understand all of the thing ?) i think i understood it would use a plug-in mechanism to 'merge' functionnalities in the soft, that would be a nice feature. how could that change the way of coding ? I know that my last question might be really 'over-over-not-cool', but it would be very helpfull for me to start if someone could tell me (or point me somewhere) in few lines : how create a toolbox. how to affects action to a drawn-objet: ex running a script that change the color of a path how to collect action to a drawn object : ex where is the code that complete the position_toolbox. i understand that is a newb-dummy question, but the name of the function with its source files would be sufficient. i am used to php so i 'understand' a little c code, and i would gain really time and effort. -- Sorry I wanted to send this in the feature request part of the site but I'm always timed out. After reading Some docs on the website here are may some clues : -Scribus is a DTP coded in C++ (but with Qt). it can work with Python Script. May be have a look at this could help doing the same in Inkscape. -If the later can be done, this will help eventually include some of good Sketch (written in Python) possibilities in Inkscape. - Also Scribus has good NodeTool, and good text tool featuring textbox (frame) or text on a path. cheers Cédric

-- Hi hervé, I can understand your trouble. As i know a bit of PHP too, I tryied to unerstand something to Sodipodi's source code (mais c'est déjà trop évolué avec plein de dépendances etc...). But I'm sure there will be things wonderfull to do with Sodipodi and more with Inkscape if it is really object-oriented. For Toolbox, i've simply to GTK site but the difficulty is to merge C file with the others (which we still have to understand). $$ Je peux comprendre que des gens qui connaissent déjà tout ça n'aient pas envie de jouer les profs $$ I suppose we could help each other (we 2), and may be will succeed in this. I've proposed Lauris Kaplinsky to work on ToolBox because I think it is not very reasonnable. May be that could be a beginning. $$ je suis français il semble que toi aussi, je ne regarde pas mes mails tous les jours mais tu peux me joindre directement radar.map35@...27... A+ Cédric
