Exactly! Of course, you can toggle on and off whether to delete tile "exteriors" for non-edge tiles. That's actually a really good reference for how "guide points" are supposed to look (though... the tiles are different). In my version you can also create a guide point and drag out a segment, the both of which show up in other relevant sides. The idea is that they help create absolutely smooth transitions: just create a node on the guide point, and snap the node's handle to the edge of the segment guide. Repeat with the node's counterpart. Smooth transition! One thing that's bugging me is that users who don't want to create seamless tiles will probably want a generic rectangle tile to which they can apply any transformation they want, just to see which looks most interesting. But if you want to create a seamless tile, you have to define a specific guide from the start... Unless I just make guides and transformations to later apply independent. If you then apply a different transformation, that won't end up with a seamless design, that's your problem?

Some time ago I was thinking up possible new interfaces for Inkscape's tiled clones function, and had compiled them here for now: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tiling_tool Recently I've been giving some more thoughts to creating seamless patterns, in particular the "edge scenarios" of normal tiling. A lazy person (like me) would probably find it a pain in the neck to make new tiles for the edges and have to realign everything. What if you could define those edge scenarios in a single basic tile? In my tiling tool proposal, I proposed tile guides where you can add "guide points" and "guide point pairs" along the boundaries. Guide points drawn on one side will automatically appear on all the other relevant sides so you know where to connect. http://postimage.org/image/ae0dae6mh/ http://postimage.org/image/kqmnwh05l/ When you have nodes located on a guide point, applying "fuse tiles" automatically connects these nodes to the corresponding nodes on the next tile. So what if we make it so that all parts of the pattern Outside the basic tile gets cut away as necessary according to these guide points? Edge tiles however will retain the original extremities. On the topic of Powerstrokes... applying Powerstroke to a group seems to crash Inkscape. Steps to reproduce: 1. Create two bezier paths 2. Group them 3. Apply Powerstroke to group (inkscape:5119): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid cast from `SPGroup' to `SPShape' The idea was to first place the lines, then apply powerstroke to all of them to edit the line shapes afterwards... Do I start another bug report? Anyway, on the topic of cusps shapes: it's true that from a technical drawer's perspective, the result may seem too pointy, but maybe such users won't actually generate lines of that angle (thus shapes that pointy) when they're actually drawing. Just to say that we're all likely itching to try it out for ourselves. :P

Bezier smoothness and antialiassing

Hi, First of all, although this email could be observed as a troll, I hope I can show that I want to improve stuff, not troll. My core (daily) automatic use of Inkscape is using it as renderer for a bulletingboard system. It runs over the last years 24x7, and I choose it because of the text-flow support. That said, we are moving to HD broadcast and the analogue smoothness is removed for 1080p sharpness. One of the core template designs uses a Bezier curve, imagine this as one side of a very tall egg. This surface, thick white border, is placed on dark blue. I am quite disappointed with the outline of the rendering of the curve. One of the topics I found today was at: <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11451> The following blog entry mentions that cairo overdoes anti-aliassing, I also compared the Cairo output and rsvg's output. The curve is different, but is it really better? Not really. <http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/getting-crisper-text-out-of-inksca…> The Faq talks about 'Jagged edges'. Since my curves are insanely big, I don't believe it is impossible to get a visually better rendered curve. As example I have attached what I think the problems are with the rendering. From bottom I really get the curve that I want, its smooth and probably it is because about 3/4 pixels are used for overlap. The steeper the curve the less interpolation between step seem to happen as if the curve is defined at x=1, x=2, x=3, but the interpolation itself is only directional with the curve opposed to orthogonal with the adjacent content. Looking at the curve in outline mode, it also gives a glipse. One of the faq entries claimns you could work with a blur. I have tried a blur, and if you use it at 0.1 you basically achieve a very poor interpolated line. I would be interested what is possible with a border of 2,3 pixels wide converging to transparency. I wonder: - is it possible with one extra interpolation step to get a more visually attractive curve? - the faq mentions that pixel alignment is important, does this mean that the controlpoints, in all cases, must snap to the raster? [my own results with snapping are virtually the same] In a conversation at #cairo, some other suggestions where made such as gamma correct blending. Wiki organisation - Case of the Clipboard

Hi, I'm working a bit for the wiki while I'm discovering Inkscape architecture. I've made the following page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Clipboard) but there is also this page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ClipBoard) which is in fact a discussion (but can looks like a documentation page as soon as there is only a "discussion" tag at the end of the page). This is symptomatic of the fact the wiki is mixing discussions and actual Inkscape state. Both are important but if we keep this way of working (maybe its an inheritance of old ages??) it's not very clear. Question 1: is there guidelines of the Wiki usage, page naming and how to handle discussions vs reality? The idea is to not lock page names for discussions. To do this, categories or templates are not usefull. We can have to solutions: 1. Each wiki page can have a discussion page (which name is "Talk"), is it a better place to use them for discussion and the "normal" page for state of the art? Of course at the begining there would be lot of topics that don't have a 'normal' page already, but at the end I imagine the aim is to have a complete user/developper/translator documentation. 2. We can end to each discussion page title with " (discussion)" I think we have an issue by not differencing discussions and documentation (there is simply a category but at the bottom of the page). Question 3: what do you think about those solutions? Question 4: Can anyone tell me whether this discussion is still consistent with actual development? (I've seen that Kris is tagging pages with 'Outdated' and 'DevDiscussion' tags, it's a good first step for refactoring!) Thanks for your interest, -- *Romain de Bossoreille*
