Hey Inkscapers, Firstly, congratulations and thank you all so much for Inkscape 0.48 I was just looking at this page here: http://www.inkscape.org/download/?lang=en And I have to say I'm fairly disappointed that Inkscape as a project caters so poorly to educating Free Desktop users about how to get Inkscape for their platform. It's not just that there isn't a download for Ubuntu or Fedora directly, but because it doesn't even have an apt link or a ppa for where you can get the latest Inkscape release. This causes major headaches for us trying to support Ubuntu: like Mozilla who recommend Ubuntu users upgrade their version of Ubuntu by downloading tar-balls, it's annoying, confusing for users and a it's maintaining the myth that FOSS is for geeks. If you'd like some help with the preparation of the page and publishing for various platforms, I'd be very happy to lend a hand. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Build against external libcroco?

(Posted as question #123799 on Launchpad) https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/123799 For Debian/Ubuntu packaging purposes, it would be preferable for us to build against an external (clean) version of libcroco rather than using the one currently in the Inkscape source-tree. A while ago, someone asked at the Debian bugtracker about this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=427946 At the time, it seems that a patched version of libcroco-0.6 was included in the source tree of inkscape-0.45, and that Inkscape could not be built with the upstream version of libcroco. Since then, a lot of changes have been made in Inkscape (including the removal of src/libcroco/README) and there is a new upstream version (0.6.2) of libcroco. Please could someone update us on the situation? Specifically: * Which version of libcroco is included with Inkscape 0.47/0.48? * Have any changes been made to the bundled library? * Can Inkscape be built successfully using a clean external libcroco? How to fix a bug for 0.48.1

Hi all, I just fixed a bug in trunk that should be released also in 0.48.1. How should one go about this? Is there a better way of simply doing the edits twice, once in trunk and once in 0.48.1 branch? (i.e. should i merge things or...) Thanks, Johan

Gaussian problem with inkscape 0.48

I have tried the .gz download, the .bz2 download, and even the bazaar version. 0.47 configures and compiles with no problem. make Inkscape populary for Laserengravingmachine

Dear Inkscape Developer, i work with laserengravingmachine at my job, but at home i use inkscape to draw anything. I have try with my boss to use inkscape for this laser. The surfaceraster is going right but the cut isn`t going. I hope we a any others can use inkscape in future for this laser. This could inkscape more populare and alternative for many laserusers. Now i can use Corel draw and adobe photoshop for this laser. The problem is only the cut-line this could a line how in corel a hairline or 0,01 thickness i think the laser can`t understand the vectorline from inkscape. The faces understand it. The lasers work´s with 1200dpi 600dpi or 400dpi how any printers. Export dialog, relative path patch

Hi, I've written some codethat makes the export dialog leave out the directory when exporting a drawing or an object, defaulting to just the png filename (patch attached). This is for two reasons: 1) Since the export path defaults to the SVG directory anyway, this will a) not change anyone's workflow, but b) will reduce work when you inevitably move your files around. If relative paths are an option, is there a good reason why they are not the default option? I suppose it's conceivable that people always export all pngs to a certain fixed folder that is nothing to do with the SVG directory, but then you have to type that in anyway, so this doesn't harm that use case at all. 2) I didn't even know that relative paths worked until about a week ago*, so I have to assume that at least some others don't know about it either. This patch helps to advertise to users that it is even possible, and saves them some work! If you accept this code, please look at it very carefully, I am just a novice at these things. Craig * I have manually updated the export path in this dialog when my files need to be moved (at least once per file, depending on that jobs status, which seems to be unavoidable in my workflow), I dont even want to think how many hours I've spent doing this unnecessarily.

Extension interface request

Hi, I'd like to make a couple of requests for features (or perhaps explanations/pointers to why they can't be included). 1) It would be really cool to have a proper directory selection (or popup directory chooser) as an option on the inkex dialog. This way the user doesn't have to memorise their favourite directories etc., they can browse to them, or use favourites, etc. 2) Someone on #inkscape mentioned that the filename/directory information was excluded from the SVG for security reasons, but this class of information is still freely included in the form of export hints. It's inconsistent for one, and inconvenient for another. I've just been developing an extension where it would have been much nicer to export the necessary files to the same directory by default. A possible workaround if 1) is ever implemented, would be to optionally default the directory chooser to the drawing's working directory, thereby bypassing the security problem. 3) Possibly related to 2. Whenever I export a document from inkscape, then move the file (I have a bunch of folders/hierarchies and the files move depending on various states), if I then need to export again, I have to tell it where to export to, and it's a bit of a pain, it would be nice for an option to always export to the working directory.
