I do not want to distract from the possible solve Chris's Drupal offer may provide. Though I've been distracted myself with the prospect of doing an svg based forum design. I've seen so many excellent things in Inkscape. I have been provoked into working on a web-store for Inkscape files. (A separate thread). ..Back to the forum. So: ------------------------------------- Such a design would use as much Inkscape as possible/applicable. Certainly a delightful prospect! Should present reasonable forum expectations. Should be as backend-agnostic as possible. Which could mean the use of xml + xsl => svg 'portions'. Be using a browser target priority of 1) Firefox 3.5... ... see Browser notes below. Use animation where applicable, fakeSMIL <script> if necessarry. There are significant javascript hooks in Inkscape so that xml+xsl transformations can be small routines in javascript. Browser notes: ------------------ Firefox + fakeSMIL = ok. Opera = ok. Safari = ok. IE + firefox plugin = ok. (http://www.savarese.com/software/svgplugin/). (Really, if an ie user is not ok with this, then can download Firefox portable). Pragmatically speaking, interest in Inkscape implies readiness to be .this. flexible. There will be some script isues. Some can be avoided by using x-browser 'modules'. eg For xhttprequest, xsl transformations. Auth notes: -------------- OpenID as an Auth agent. Others to follow. Other technical mechanics: --------------------------------- Small data references & text can be 'POST'ed to an OpenID'd session. XML + XSL can be xhttpRequest 'GET'ed. Hi, I should have my basic theme ported to Drupal during this weekend. It currently looks like this [1], and when finished it will look like this [2]. Could I use inkscape.org/drupal as a test site? Excellent stuff! I agree that on Windows it would be good to not install all languages by default. I'd suggest you taking this a little further to your liking and we'll get it committed. In all of them, polng was equal to lng, with the exception of Japanese which had, incorrectly, jp rather than ja for lng. lng was only used for "..\..\inkscape\*.${lng}.txt" anyway - a mask which matches no files for any language. I'd propose that that line be vanquished as it's not used (historical?). In the meantime, I simplified it into one argument for the two. More on languages later. While doing this I found about half a dozen minor bugs, all of which I've fixed. Starting at line 1382 (old), that set of things had the conditions the wrong way around, so it would only print the detail if it was *empty*, rather than if it was something... utterly insignificant, but a bug :D More importantly, all the code around that section was inefficient, I rearranged it to make it more efficient. Also the deleting HKCU\.svg[z] thing was looking for the wrong thing, fixed that. The biggest bug I found was that single-user installations didn't work (at least judging by the code). The shell var context had been formerly set to "all", and the all users section set it to "all" and had a bit of code which wouldn't ever get executed. I got around this the easiest way, which was just to create an unshown section before it to SetShellVarContext current. All in all, I took it down from 1559 lines (47,874 bytes) to 930 lines (34,534 bytes) (60% of the lines, 72% of the filesize), shrunk the installer output by about 25KB (0.07% :P), fixed some bugs and made it more readable in the process. Now for some discussion on what I reckon having looked at it. Languages: I can optimise those still further, just thought I'd send round what I'd got so far. In particular, I want to change it so that no languages are installed by default; this would speed up installation on Windows exponentially - due to the LZMA solid compression used, each language takes an inordinate time to install. I think I can fix that up too, but I'll need to experiment on it a bit. Moving the files first should help in the technique... I'll try it out and report back. However, back on the main topic, I want to change it so English is not shown on the list (it's really pretty meaningless, it's an empty section... and the SectionGroup is "Translations" of the interface, English is pretty much a given), and so that the only language which is installed is that which the installer is running in. I can do that easily enough. Possibly also the MUI LANGDLL should be displayed to let the user choose the initial language. Presets: we've got the SectionIn 1 2 3 bits all over the place, but aren't using the presets at all (any more I guess from commented out code). I think they should be added back, that way you can have all languages in full, the suggested one in optimal and none in minimal. Also I think that quick launch and desktop icons should be on by default. Start menu: currently this is forced on, in a set location, which isn't very nice. We should use the MUI STARTMENU stuff. I also think that a lot of the DetailPrint bits should be cleaned up to either be removed or so they can be more useful. The welcome and finish pages should get their own images, I'll make a proposal for it. Also the header image should get the new logo; likewise I can do that. Help with Novice hack

I created a crude Python script that took an svg drawing, created a bunch of copies with sequential numbering(000001.svg 000002.svg etc) and then the script modified elements within each frame. I then converted them to PNGs to in turn become an animation via Mencoder. Although my program works, it's still pretty much junk because it is such pain to use. I am teaching myself C/C++, I I thought I would try to redo it in C or C++ for programming practice and hopefully improve it as well. So to get to the point(sorry for the ramble) I was wondering if there is a standard C or C++ library (XML based I guess?)that Inkscape uses for SVG manipulation? On the of chance that my coding yields something useful I love to share it, so I might as well start with something that is already being used. Finally I am also not very good at Javascript. I was thinking that I could write a javascript program to refresh a browser so that each svg frame would be displayed in turn to preview the coming animation, transforming the SVG frames to PNGs is a pain. Does anyone know a javascript function that would help achieve this? Sorry if these questions are dumb.... -Patrick

-On the service file: I think, Aaron, that what would be more useful is to have the service.in file modified to point to whichever Inkscape is currently being compiled (easy to implement.) Then it will work with in place installations. This would still require the use of sudo in the make install step to move the service file to dbus's service folder (I think making separate service folders would be more trouble than it's worth. The end result is that the Inkscape service file would always point to the last Inkscape version installed. Ted is right that it is not a crucial feature. I implemented it mostly because it was so easy. Although, it does mean that the example code will always run, weather or not Inkscape is active, which is one less potential error message for new adopters. On starting a session bus: If the user has DBus installed they probably have a session bus running. I could start one if it's not or just assume they are not going to use DBus and not do any DBus stuff. Either one would work, and I don't think it makes a huge difference. If a windows user has DBus installed I _absolutely_ want to support that. If they don't however, I can't really install it for them. At this point, Windows DBus is still in development so it's not very likely that windows users will have it. As soon as it is available, We'll make sure Inkscape supports it. If someone is running Inkscape in a cygwin or MinGW environment where DBus is available we should support that as well. Let me know if you think there is a problem with that assessment of the current situation. On recent Progress: I'm still working on getting returning list structures working, but I have a new idea that might work. Packaging is still in progress but I think I have a better idea of what I'm doing now. Tomorrow I'll post a list of functions that are broken and a list of functions that need minor changes. On short -> I can't change documet properties - when I open the window for document properties - Inkscape frezee - all windows are shown but ..in a frozen state Working with Inkscape Preferences - all seems to work OK on some cases on other cases Inkscape randomly do the same freeze as previous - I can only kill Inkscape then..
