I am very glad this is being discussed! Here are my opinions from what I've been able to do thus far using Inkscape and my vinyl cutters: I would not bother with any format other than HPGL. It is a standard for desktop and large format cutting plotters - not just Graphtec. (Graphtec has some proprietary formats, as do others...) I have a 15 year old 24" Roland plotter and a less than week old Graphtec 48" plotter ( vinyl cutters ). The exact same file can be cut by both machines with no alterations other than the original setup. Graphtec defaults to it's own version - GP-GL, this needs changed on the control panel to standard HP-GL. What I do right now is: 1. Make the drawing in Inkscape 2. Copy what needs cut to the clipboard 3. Open a new file in Inkscape 4. Paste clipboard data into new file 5. SHIFT+CTRL+D to access properties of new file 6. Click the "Fit page to selection" button 7. Save file as "newplot.ps" 8. in terminal, enter: ./graphtec.sh < newplot.ps 9. plotter starts and cuts perfectly, absolutely ignorant it is being controlled by open source software! The file 'graphtec.sh' is a modified version of a script found at: http://www.3x6.nl/inkscape_hpgl/....html It uses hpgl-distiller - a program that can be downloaded from: http://pldaniels.com/hpgl-distiller This sounds complicated, but once it is set up, it isn't much worse than any other vinyl cutting software. I've used plenty of them! I will gladly help actively work on and test this. I also have plenty of other ideas to help inkscape become a full featured vinyl cutting solution.

Inkscape PDF import from the command line

Hi, According to the latest release notes from the wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes047#PDF_import_from_the… Inkscape 0.47 (upcoming) will support importing PDF from the command line. According to the wiki the first page is imported. Is there a feature planned to do page by page import (e.g. --page=1, --page=all, or --page=1,3,6)? If not, I would love to help out in implementing this. Thanks, Amit

SVGFonts dialog

*** if you are not interested in my SVGFonts SoC status, you can skip reading this message *** Hi, Richard, I am a bit nervous about what should I do next. I have been thinking about user interface and I agree with you that glyph kerning is much more present than other stuff. But I am not sure if we should put all font-face attributes on a dialog. That would be too much stuff. And probably not very useful for the users. Think about stuff like the "ideographic", "mathematical" and "hanging" attributes. It seems to be stuff that would be passed to pango so that it can decide whether to use or not this SVGFont instance when inquired about a closest match for a font substitution (supposedly it didnt find the perfect match installed on system). I guess this stuff wouldnt be much important at first glance. Since when my project got stucked at pango, I have been feeling kind of lost in a new huge set of user interface TO-DOs, which I do not know what to address first. I am feeling a bit pressured by the deadline and the feeling that even having put some effort on the codebase, my code is still not very useful. I would like to ask you, what should I focus now, since we have only 12 days until GSoC deadline. I think I cannot do anyting great such as glyph editing (be it on or off canvas) until then. Juca PS: If anyone else wants to give me some advice, I sugest compiling and installing cairo from git and then compiling inkscape. That would trigger the conditional compile of my work, which cannot be compiled without a new version of cairo (which has user-font support). Any clues? Actually, you don't need to add the menu item at all, if it's defined in the INX file it'll get added automatically. In the case of C plugins, the INX file is the XML that is at the bottom of the file. Probably the reason that you're not seeing it is that your plugin isn't getting initialized. To do that you'll have to put it in the list of plugin inits. In general, you'll only have rebuild when a major header file or the build system is changed. So if you change one of the Makefiles (probably when you added your file) it'll change. But when you change init.cpp it'll only build init.o, libextension.a and the inkscape binary. --Ted

Node tool is broken in Inkscape 0.46+devel, built Jul 16 2008 (on Windows)

Hello, In Inkscape 0.46+devel, built Jul 16 2008, on Windows 2000, the Node tool is broken: You can't select the type of node at all if no handles are shown on the node. (i.e. select a newly drawn node and apply a type to it). When handles have been dragged out of the node, then you can select the node type in the toolbar. This is a change of behaviour from before. Crop & Transparency Tools

Hi everyone, I've got a couple of thoughts I'd like some feedback on. Clippaths and Masking are both existing functions we support but Cropping and a transparency tool are features that dont currently exist. There is a process that must be done to achieve those results which I think is redundant work 90% of the time, not to mention hard to learn for new users. So here's my proposal. [[ CROP TOOL ]] Is anyone interested in defining the interaction and rendering of a cropping function? My assumption would be a tool that helps the user create a <rect> (that is rendered as a inverted filled outline. The tool would instantly draw the rect > selects objects according to the setting > groups that selection (if crop selection is specified) and finally applies a clippath. We would need display tricks mentioned like rendering a 50% transparent black fill for the area not being cropped during the process. Rotating the crop could be done with the control point usually reserved for rounding a rect ( as I dont think we want to introduce rounded clippaths when we are talking about something simple like cropping. also I think this should be have three modal settings in the toolbar: - crop entire document, - crop selected objects (which would require grouping before applying the clippath) - crop current layer ( which would clippath the layer group) [[ TRANSPARENCY TOOL ]] We could use a similar approach to create a transparency tool. In one action we would create a white rect matching the bounding box of the selected object(s) and group + mask to uniformly reveal transparency features similar to xara anyway what do you think? Overloading ambiguity

Dear Inkscape developers, I'm trying to compile Inkscape-0.46 on OpenSolaris-200805 with the SunStudio tools. Unfortunately the process is not very smooth.
