NEW: LPE Interpolate

Hi all, I just committed a new LPE: Interpolate. Does something like the python interpolate effect. You can also draw the interpolation trajectory: the path along which the intermediate paths are drawn. 1. Draw a path consisting of 2 subpaths. (draw a line, then draw another line while holding shift. the 2nd line will be added to the 1st, the result will be an SVG path with 2 subpaths) 2. Apply LPE Interpolate. The reason I made this interpolation between the 1st and 2nd subpath is that it seemed relatively easy to do this, instead of interpolating between whole sets of paths. Hmm, now that I think of it, it isn't all that much more effort actually. In any case, the UI is much easier to work with for subpaths than for 2 paths. I could also do this probably: 1. Draw an interpolation trajectory 2. Apply LPE 3. Copy-paste first path as "Path A" parameter Copy-paste second path as "Path B" parameter Let me know what you all think is best, maybe we want both, as in the case of bend path and pattern-along-path. ("Interpolate subpaths" and "Interpolate along path") :) Johan P.S. The LPE choose dropdown box is getting really huge now. Who wants to make mockups of what is a better system for applying effects?

Fix for latency warnings

For those seeing the recent event latency warnings, I've just put in a fix ** (inkscape:27965): WARNING **: Event latency reached 3.290566 sec The main cause of extraneous warnings is a slight difference between the clock used for the GDK event marking and the real time. On my Mac, I observed that the skew was of a constant factor, so I added in an option to compensate for that. On my system the value was 0.9766 (and thus on my system after running for 85 seconds Inkscape would believe a latency of over 2 seconds had crept in). We'll probably need to investigate this a bit more, but getting that factor in should let people with false warnings get things calibrated and see only good ones. If you need it, look for the new setting under the misc pane.

a newbie installation question

Hi, I have downloaded .gz file, gunzipped, and tried installing by: ./configure (and so forth) The configure complained as to: > checking libgc version 6.4+... no > configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc So I went ahead and installed gc. It seemed to have gone well. Adding additional raster effects...

I am interested in adding a couple more effects the the already existing raster effects. It's more or less just for myself since I don't have the chops to contribute anything of value to anyone else. I'm not sure what I'm biting off at this point. It might be easy or it might be extremely hard to do. My coding skills are very limited (meaning I have none). Are the raster effects part of the main source code or are they broken out into smaller "extensionized" chunks somewhere? I think modifying an existing effect into something else might be a good starting point for me...if possible. A "Dude, don't even attempt to try this." would be a perfectly acceptable answer for me. I'll walk away like nothing ever happened. :) heathenx

Bug in node tool?

Hi Guys, spotted this late last night and didnt get a chance to file a bug on it, writing this note so I dont forget completely. Was playing with the node tool and found that there seems to be an indexing error (looks like an off by one type of thing) where whenever you do click to add nodes or try to drag the curve it does it to the wrong line segment. so if you have A-----B-----C and double click between A&B you get a node between B&C likewise if you try to drag to reshape it moves BC instead of AB. win32 devs - be mindful of <string.h>

Hi all. I just wanted to remind win32 developers that when they use the C lib string functions in <string.h>, they should take care to #include <string.h>, even if their code will compile without it. Apparently mingw's runtime .h files are configured a little differently, and other includes (stdio? stdlib?) pick up the string.h definitions. Without that #include, your code that uses string functions might compile, but when you commit, it will break the build for everyone else. I know, because I have been guilty of this more than once myself! :) IMHO, even if one feels confident that their includes are handled by other includes, in situations like this it is best to be explicit, safe, and portable. bob

I was redirected to this list, my problem ist the following: When using the Tablet (Wacom Graphire 4, USB) on my OpenSUSE 11, with the selector tool (F1) pressing on some object, the object is not selected. If I use the mouse for this, the object is selected. If I switch the Tablet's mode from Screen to Disabled in the XInput properties, I can select the object just as with the mouse, but I don't get the pressure-sensitivity. If I patch inkscape in order to produce output in sp_select_context_root_handler and sp_select_context_item_handler and put a printf at case GDK_BUTTON_PRESS, GDK_ENTER_NOTIFY, GDK_LEAVE_NOTIFY on select_context_item_handler as well as GDK_BUTTON_PRESS and GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE at select_context_root (the latter two I'll be naming GDK_BUTTON_PRESS/RELEASE____root from now on, I get the following behavior: if I draw a square with the rectangle tool and switch to select (F1), I can move the mouse over the rectangle and I get GDK_ENTER_NOTIFY If I move the mouse out of the rectangle, I get GDK_LEAVE_NOTIFY If I press somewhere (outside of the rectanlge), I get GDK_BUTTON_PRESS____root, and when I release, I get GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE____root. This is also valid for the tablet. If I press somewhere *in* the rectangle, with the mouse I get GDK_LEAVE_NOTIFY GDK_ENTER_NOTIFY GDK_BUTTON_PRESS and if I release, I get GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE___root GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE___root (that's right, I get it twice), and the rectangle is selected. If I do the same with the tablet, I get GDK_LEAVE_NOTIFY GDK_BUTTON_PRESS____root and upon release GDK_BUTTON_RELEASE____root GDK_ENTER_NOTIFY and nothing is selected at all. Maybe someone with a bit more insight could help me out here. It might have to do something with GDK and/or its implementation of XInput, but this would not explain the different behavior, I mean pressing outside of the rectangle generates PRESS and RELEASE as expected, but if there's an object under it, why is there a leave notify *not* followed by a enter notify just as it is the case with the mouse? -- cheers, Alex

Bevel LPE (and others) discussion

Hi, I'm working on a blueprint for adding bevel to objects. I'm still doing the mockups and need some input (I will post them shortly). So far the mockups will show some examples of the intended result. I haven't done the UI yet because I'm not sure on what features people need. There are some ideas on the blueprint page: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/bevel-lpe What i suggest is that the color of the bevel to be independent of the objects color, so the bevel color should be editable on the LPE dialog. I'm not so sure about the stroke configuration. The above leads me to the following suggestion. I'm planning on doing (on the long run) blueprints for LPEs for shadow, emboss and extrusion, and a widget that let's you see and edit a color (for general using on those LPEs and on future ones) could be useful. What do you think? The point is that all named LPEs have a lot in common in the way the should work: * Bevel LPE: needs color selector for stroke/fill of the bevel and light needs adjusting the position of light * Shadow LPE: needs color selector for shadow needs adjusting the position of shadow * Emboss LPE: <none?> needs adjusting thedirection of emboss * Extrusion LPE: needs color selector for stroke/fill of the extrusion and light needs adjusting the position the extrude and light Doubts, suggestions, ideas...: 1- Is it a good idea to set stroke&fill independently from the objects attributes? (I find this useful but want your opinions about coding and usability). 2- What are your thoughts about creating a color selector widget? Just a swatch showing a color that jumps to the Fill&Stroke dialog when clicked. Would it be any good to have for these LPEs and future use? or is better to use the current one? but how? The LPE settings dialog should show this information somehow and the problem is that using the current dialog like that won't make clear what color are you setting exactly. 3- The selection of direction and position has similarities between LPEs and maybe some code could be shared. Or use a widget like the Gimp is using, but I would prefer on-canvas editing. 4- The color of the light should be added to the color of the objects, so the final aspect of the object depends on both. CorelDRAW X3 does this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzlaE4IJzr8 (@2:10) 5- Should rounded corners be faceted or not (with an option for the number of facets)? 6- CorelDRAW does bevel with soft edges, but this can get things complicated as we would need blur and a clipping path.
