WinXP - 0.46dev+devel: Crash on opening files (segmentation fault in msvcrt!_HUGE ())

Hi, in nightly builds (for example 24th of December 2007 and previous) Inkscape almost always crashes when I want to open or import some file. I have filled a simillar bug report, but with segmentation fault in wxvault.dll (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/177618), but it turned out to be connected to EMBASSY software that ships with some DELL computers... Anyway, after uninstalling the software, the program is still crashing, but this time with the segmentation fault in msvcrt!_HUGE(). On my laptop this happens when I want to open or import some file. I click on button, and the program crashes. I can almost always reproduce this crash on my laptop, but some people said that they can not reproduce it (see the bug report). Any ideas what could be wrong here? Thanks, and just wanted to say that 0.46 will be just amazing :) This is a brilliant software. Rok

File\Import not File\Open

My first post to this list, so bear with me. I'm trying to develop an extension to import svg data, a follow-up to Bug #179560. Question: is there any way to specify, inside an .inx file, that it is to be used only on the File|Import dialog and not in the File|Open dialog. My extension, if it works, will be meaningless in a File|Open dialog, because I only want to import one specific path node. Currently the list of available file types in the two different dialog boxes appears to be identical, is this deliberate or accidental? Alvin Penner

pdf crashes

Like others I have been getting intermittent and unpredictable (though quite often) crashes when opening or importing pdf files. I found where it crashes but I have no idea why. So I just commented out one line, which seems to have fixed it for me - likely at the expense of a memory leak. Please test if this fixes the crashes for you. This is the line 711 in src/extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-input.cpp: //delete pdf_doc; I'm at a loss when it comes to such mysterious crashes - there's definitely no double delete here and nothing obviously fishy. default metadata in prefs?

Can someone please explain to me why we need 2 new pages in prefs for default metadata and license? What's wrong with just changing the metadata and license in an empty document and saving it as a template? Saving as a template is not obvious? OK, just make it more obvious. Add a "save template" command for example. This solution is bad because it unnecessarily duplicates some very heavy pieces of UI, clutters the preferences, and generally makes the program look clunkier and less clean. PDF/AI import is working great since Rev. 16995 and I had no more crashes or problems saving the imported file. I can only add that import works much faster too, which is very good. Cheers, Gez.

I'm trying to compile inkscape on an older OS [RHEL4]. missing gdkmm. don't know where to find this and google turns up references to gtkmm. Any ideas where to find this? -jmg

Cairo pdf output flips text

Is it known that Save As... PDF via Cairo flips text upside down? This is on a Win32 snapshot from a day or two ago. Also why is PDF via Cairo output so slow to render in Acrobat? It renders so slow you'd think it was an ultra hi-res bitmap. But the size of the file, and zoomability, say otherwise. --bb

2 silent data loss bugs when out of disk space -- milestone?

Hi all, I'm new to bug triaging, and I came across (and confirmed in today's SVN under Fedora Core 6) a couple silent data loss bugs in the tracker. Both are caused by full disk/partition situations: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/167801 svg file truncated when target partition is full https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168510 svg files, preferences.xmlsaved as 0 bytes if /tmp is full Wasn't sure whether these should be milestoned, so thought I'd bring them to the list's attention... -Tom

Does PDF Import actually work?

Hi all, I am trying to test out the new PDF capabilities for Inkscape, as they're perhaps one of our most significant new features. Unfortunately, I'm not having luck getting PDF import working: I downloaded form W-4 from irs.gov and attempted File > Import, but got the following error on the console: /tmp/fw4.pdf:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found %PDF-1.6 ^ It looks like Inkscape's not detecting the file as a PDF, and trying to open it as an SVG. Anyone know what's going on? Bryce

Some tool icon comments

3 little design critiques for some aspiring icon designer to maybe consider: * I find the current 3D Box icon oddly jarring because uses a "looking-up-from-below" perspective. All the other tools can be interpreted as either being completely flat or as looking down on something (e.g. pencil, pen -- you're never looking up at your pen). It makes it feel to me like I'm jerking my neck up and down as I scan over the tools. I'm sure there's a comment in a Scott McCloud book somewhere about not jerking around the viewpoint like this. :-) * The gradient icon just read well for me. Being right next to the hierarchy thingy makes it look very much to me like it's some kind of connector gizmo. And having the gradient just be a simple white to green makes it look like it's just a button with cool shading, not a button *about* making cool shading. (The rectangle button has almost identical shading) I think a nonsquare background shape would help (rectangle maybe even) and a three band, or 2-band color->complement (eg orange->blue) gradient in the background would help make it clear that the gradient was the point. Oh and pixel align those handles (like in the pen icon) so they're not all blurry! * There seems to be a little inconsistency in the design of the shape icons. Rect and 3D Box have a little white inner border inside the black outline. Circle and stars do not. Also I think something more interesting could be done to tie their colors together. Different colors is good, but somehow the current cyan, purple, pink, yellow just don't look like a coherent colorscheme to me. They don't seem to form any sort of progression. Also the rectangle shape feels significantly bigger than the others. Perhaps making it a few pixels smaller and slightly more rectangular would be nice. I love the pencil / pen / calligraphy / bucket icons. Those have a very unified look and communicate their functions very well. --bb
