I know there has always been talk of putting together a suite from Inkscape, Gimp and Scribus, but this might be a great start. I agree that it would make the workflow better, and you wouldn't have to worry about trying to implement that which is already implemented in a much broader way in the Gimp - thus, there would be more bitmap-editing functionality. One really cool thing about it, I think, would be the ability to edit embedded bitmaps without having to be concerned with separate files. That would save so much time and effort!

NEW: style swatches and labels

* The somewhat cryptic "F:" and "S:" labels in the selected style indicator (at the left end of the statusbar) and in tool's style swatches are now spelled out as Fill: and Stroke:. We believe this makes the interface, even if less space-efficient, a bit more friendly for newbies. [[Note that I'm still not completely sold on this idea, but decided to try it out. Please voice your opinions.]] * The style swatches at the right end of object-creating tools' control bars now open the Preferences page of the corresponding tool when clicked. Also, now these swatches display a tooltip explaining its purpose (e.g. "Style of new rectangles", "Style of new calligraphic strokes", etc.) -- bulia byak Inkscape. NEW: grouping a single object

In previous versions, Inkscape didn't allow you to group a single object. Yet in some cases, this operation is useful (for example, to blur the clipped edged of an object). So now this limitation is removed. Let me know if you find any problem with this. The only "problem" I'm aware of is that now, if you press and hold Ctrl+G, you will end up with a very deeply grouped object :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Accessing Inkscape API in external scripts

I don't know if you already write something about this, but, if you don't may it help... My idea is to say in the XPI "this script uses the Inkscape DOM" and the inkscape will talk with the script all the time, allowing this to use the inkscape like the user does... The Inkscape must listen the commands from the script output and write an feedback in a pipefile for the script know what happens. A sample bash script to fill in red an rectangle with id rect2: #!/bin/bash pipe=$1 echo 'selectElementById rect2' testError "$( cat $pipe )" echo 'setAttribute fill="red"' testError "$( cat $pipe )" I write 2 scripts to see if it's possible. inkSimulator.sh will do what the Inkscape must to do and externalDOM.sh will test it. The interface is disabled for the user interaction... All the readed DOM commands gets an error response <error num>|<error text> No error returns something like this: 0|Ok Trying to set the attribute fill... Outch! I recived the error 2: Ups... no element selected Trying to get the rect4... Outch! I recived the error 1: The id rect4 do not existis Trying to get the rect2... Yeah! NEW: batch export and slicing

* Batch export: The Bitmap Export dialog (Ctrl+Shift+E) got a new checkbox, Batch export all selected objects. This checkbox is available when two or more objects are selected. If it is checked, instead of exporting selection as a whole, Inkscape exports each selected object separately into its own PNG file. This uses each object's export hints (i.e. export filename and DPI) if they are remembered from a previous export; otherwise, the filename is created from the object ID and the DPI is 90 pixels per inch. Caution: Unlike regular export, batch export overwrites all existing PNG files without warning. This makes it possible to implement all kinds of image slicing and automated export scenarios. For example, if you are working on a web site design, you can create a separate "export" layer. In that layer, "slice" your web page image into separate areas by creating invisible rectangles with no fill and no stroke. Select each rectangle (by Tab/Shift+Tab, or by switching to Outline mode where even an invisible rectangle can be selected by clicking on its outline) and export it into the corresponding filename (which gets saved as that object's export hint). After that, if you do any changes to your graphics, it's very easy to reexport all the slices: just switch to the "export" layer, select all in that layer (Ctrl+A), and export with the Batch export selected objects checkbox on. This functionality replaces the "groups to pngs" extension which I'm going to remove. If you know of any reason why it should stay, please speak up. -- bulia byak Inkscape. pstricks export: inkscape 0.45+devel

Hi Folks, I would like to have pstricks export prompt me to 'export text as path'. This would allow me to export text as text - and hence use latex annotations in my inkscape drawing. I've checked out and compiled inkscape 0.45+devel on my suse 10.1 machine (64bit). There is apparently some loss of functionality (bug?) in pstricks export since my previous version of inkscape: pstricks doesn't appear to be including text during output. I can reproduce this problem by: 1. start inkscape. 2. use the text tool and type some text. 3. save to filename as pstricks. 4. examine the filename to see it is empty apart from headers. I appreciate that this is the devel package - but thought that if this section of the code was currently in development, some kind sole might give my give my feature request some consideration at the same time! best regards, richard,

Stroke color

Hi devel, If I remember well, when I was using CorelDraw, a right click on a color of the palette was the action to change the color of the stroke of an object. I find it more logical than Shift+click, since you have two things to paint, and two buttons on the mouse ; and why Shift rather than Ctrl or Alt ? So I thought it would be a good idea to enable right click to paint the stroke, since it isn't used. Of course, we would keep shift + click until another better use is found, since many users are used to this. If you think it is a relevant feature, then I would agree to implement it. It would be my first coding contribution, an occasion to put the hands in the code, and learn about glib, which I don't know at all. What do you think ? Romain

Announced 12 February, 2007 - Building on the overwhelming success of last year's Libre Graphics Meeting in Lyon, France, key Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) graphics projects are pleased to announce the second Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM), to be held in MontrÃ©al, QuÃ©bec, Canada, May 6, 2007 at Ãcole Polytechnique de MontrÃ©al. This year's LGM provides a venue where FLOSS graphics application developers, users and professional artists from all over the world meet to discuss collaboration, outline the future of the projects together, with the goal of increasing interaction between developers, professional graphics artists and print professionals to improve the steadily expanding FLOSS graphics' application ecosystem.
