Artists and Developers Ally to Boost Open Source Graphics Software. Libre Graphics Meeting 2007 in MontrÃ©al. Announced 12 February, 2007 - Building on the overwhelming success of last year's Libre Graphics Meeting in Lyon, France, key Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) graphics projects are pleased to announce the second Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM), to be held in MontrÃ©al, QuÃ©bec, Canada, May 6, 2007 at Ãcole Polytechnique de MontrÃ©al. This year's LGM provides a venue where FLOSS graphics application developers, users and professional artists from all over the world meet to discuss collaboration, outline the future of the projects together, with the goal of increasing interaction between developers, professional graphics artists and print professionals to improve the steadily expanding FLOSS graphics' application ecosystem. This ecosystem consists of open source projects such as Blender - a 3D creation application, Scribus - a professional grade page layout application, GIMP - a versatile and mature image editor, Inkscape - a user friendly, yet powerful vector drawing application for SVG, Krita - a rapidly maturing "natural" painting application, Open Clip Art Library - a large public domain collection of freely available artwork, and many other projects focussed on graphics creation and editing. According to Louis Desjardins, a 20 year veteran of pre-press and print production and organiser of the conference: "LGM is a sure demonstration of the maturity of free and open source applications - even at a professional level. Not only that, never before have I seen such a close and amicable working relationship between the users of this kind of software and those who create it." Having experienced the whole evolution from camera ready galleys and manual stripping to the advent and evolution of DTP, he states: "We are now seeing Free Software emerge in a domain which was more or less closed before." Numerous companies and organisations are showing their support of LGM by means of sponsorship. They are convinced that LGM has a clear positive impact on the evolution of the projects present at the conference. LGM audience is increasing rapidly as we gather momentum. Sponsors have the opportunity to show their support to the community and get appropriate web and media exposure. This year they also have the opportunity to advertise in the LGM Brochure which will be entirely done using FLOSS. The conference offers presentations of various Free/Libre Open Source graphics projects, technology previews and talks on general issues such as open file formats. There will be informal brainstorming sessions and time for artists and developers to meet face to face and to work on common goals, which is a characteristic of the FLOSS world. LGM 2007 is putting out a call for participation, sponsorship, and discussion. Inkscape OLPC contacts

Hello all, ok, Redhat is handling most of the UI development and I'm got them interested in possibly using Inkscape for the drawing activity on OLPC. So, this is a major component of the project and RedHat has developer(s) working on this. Offline one developer asked me who wants to be in the discussion about this. I'm thinking off the top of my head: Bryce, Mental, JonCruz...are there any other people that would like to be put in contact with them? I connected up their interest with discussion about inkboard, since the device has mesh networking, they want to have collaborative sketching/drawing...cool! This is really good news and hopefully will bear fruit, but wanted to make sure I made public this and to see who is interested in this opportunity... I'll send him a list in a couple of hours...sooo...if you are into, then please reply... NEW: GNOME-VFS from Open/Save/Export

I'm trying out the bulia-style announcement. I applied a simple patch that allows us to use non-local URIs in addition to local paths via Gnome-VFS by using GTK file chooser on the Open, Save ___, and Export dialogs. This means you can use webdav shares, samba mounts, sftp/ssh shares, now...basically, any backend that gnome-vfs supports, we should be able to use. So, in effect, one could work on files from a bluetooth phone filesystem (if so inclined ;). Before, Gnome-VFS support, Bryce setup as a configure-time option, --with-gnome-vfs, which appears to be turned on by default (even without the configure-time option). And, one could open any URI that gnome-vfs supported from the commandline. So, now we have the added capability So, please test this out. Also, I'm curious if/how this works on Windows and Mac OS X. Sorry to forward a few of these to the inkscape-devel list, but I think its an interesting issue for us to deal with, especially as so many open mobile/ubiquitous devices are on the horizon, plus, it helps us track down memory leaks, etc. Mental, this seems like it might interest you a bit? Also, could some others comment. What are the top five ways we can practically lower these memory requirements? Inkscape 0.45 crashes during the start on Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Hi there, The problem is already mentioned in the subject. For starters, I must admit, that I never had problems with X11 applications, including previous relases of Inkscape. I am using the ibook G4, so it is not related to the Intel architecture. When I start Inkscape 0.45, I have a messeage about long time need for caching the fonts etc., and after clicking "OK" the Inkscape disappears from Dock, and in Console I can see following output: bash: no job control in this shell dyld: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/bin/inkscape-bin Undefined symbols: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Get_BDF_Property expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Load_Sfnt_Table expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib Some other people have the same problem on their Macs, and the bugs have been reported on bugtracker here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1654068&group_id=93438&atid=604306 and here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1652913&group_id=93438&atid=604306 Please, fix this bug ASAP, or find some remedy, if this is caused by local settings.
