Renderserver / Shared Object

Hello, I'm actively using Inkscape to render my cable-text TV newspaper. I want to shrink the application layer needed for it. Starting with the biggest application Inkscape. Is anything done on making the render part of inkscape into a shared object that can be used in an other application? I'm not looking for other SVG implementations because of the superb support of textwrapping in Inkscape. My first project is to put all dependencies of sp_export_png_file into a renderserver that allows me to have an application sleeping instead of startingup foreach svg file I want to convert. Eventually getting the Inkscape SVG renderer into Ambulant (a SMIL player), so I don't need intermediate files, then again, cache can be quite handy. Yours Sincerely, Stefan de Konink

Inkscape always crashes when "About Inkscape" menu item is clicked.

I'm using Slackware with Dropline GNOME. The Inkscape 0.43 crashes every time when "About Inkscape" is clicked. And display a dialog with message: ---------- "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." --------- Run it in console, it display: ---------- shannleon@...1273...[inkscape-0.43]$ inkscape Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it. ---------- So, I download the source from sourceforge. ./configure --prefix=/home/shannleon/inkscape ; make -j4 It products same error. 0.44 Status update

Heya all, We are in a preliminary feature freeze, or "FEATURE FROST". This means that ONLY work on bugs and the features listed below should be done. If you wish to work on a new feature, please do this on a branch or with the patch tracker. We're now getting ready to start putting out pre-release packages for testing. -pre0 will be out within a matter of days. The full feature freeze may come as early as the 15th. If you are doing development work, please plan on getting it wrapped up and ready for release this weekend. We are planning to have a relatively short bug fix period this time, so if your feature is not likely to be ready by the 15th, let's discuss it now so we can determine whether to put the feature on hold, push back the feature freeze, or whatever. Can you please review the list below, and reply with an update on them? (Especially if you're listed for multiple items.) However, work has been stuck getting Inkscape::LayerManager to compile due to a subtle detail with sigc::mem_fun(), and it's uncertain if there is sufficient time to unstick it and finish the feature prior to the release. Additional people's help may be needed here. [Beyond the memory issue, are there other aspects to the layer dialog that others could help with, such as UI work or coding helper features or whatever? --bh] * Update Release Notes 4/29 - Still under way Fit Canvas to Selection - DONE ======================= This is a feature ACSpike has been working on, and plans to complete for the release. Help is needed from someone who knows inkscape gradients, such as mental or bulia. He needs to know how to read gradient info from an SPGradient object. DOM Support =========== Ishmal has been working on this. The newest code is all imported and builds. [Is there anything else needing to be done prior to release?] SIOX Support ============ Ishmal has this over half done. The code is all imported and building, and the selection mechanism is now done. Getting Inkscape and SIOX intercommunication working, but this can be built as a filter to potrace, which simplifies things. The transformation issues reported previously have been sorted out, using a "confidence matrix". Extensions ========== Ted is focusing on cleaning up extension parameters and felt he'd have this wrapped up by the end of the month. The plan is to have longer text (tool tips) available, and a few more widgets. More spacing in the autogui will be added to make it look nicer. * Ted reports there is an unverified bug in the ordering of the effects in the menu, to be investigated. The Extension Editor is further off, and not being planned for this release. 5/1 - Ted reports the feature is not yet working, but feels it shouldn't be a problem to get it fixed in the next couple weeks. Snapping ======== Ralf is coming up to speed on this issue. Hopefully Carl can also shed light on things. The feature is complete and accepted for the release. Screenshots =========== Scislac has taken this task on, and plans to have it done for the release. Two screenshots are done currently, and one more is in the works. There will be a call for more screenshots on the Deviant Art site. Tutorials ========= Calligraphy is mostly done, and a few of the other updates to the other tutorials have been drafted but that stuff definitely needs more work. Should be possible to have them done by the end of April. Man page should be current. Bulia will update keys.xml shortly. Note: The sooner these can be finalized, the sooner translators can get going on them. 5/1 - ScislaC says a lot of progress was made over the weekend, but has run into some errors regenerating the svgs & html Calligraphic interface tweak - DONE ============================ Bulia is working on this change requested by MentalGuy, and feels they are minor and should have no trouble completing for the release. Windows font handling bugfixes - DONE ============================== Richard (cyreve) has completed these bug fixes and updated the release notes. * Update ReleaseNotes Python Extensions on Windows ============================ !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! Bulia reports that extensions that rely on PyXML still do not work on Windows. Due to the number of python extensions, this would be a major missing feature for Windows users. Text/Fonts UI ============= deadchip (aka Milosz Derezynski <internalerror at gmail dot com>) has written a font lister Gtkmm class, to enable re-use of the font list. He is planning to write a font picker dialog, and rewrite the current font picker to use the font _listing_ class. This enables using normal Gtk components (ListStore, etc.) for accessing the font info. He plans to have this work done by May 1st, or May 15th at the latest. Windows "dialogs on top" Patch for GTK ====================================== !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! This is not exactly an Inkscape-specific problem, since the code changes wouldn't be to Inkscape, but it would be nice to have it finally fixed. This 0.44 release effort may be a good vehicle to tie it to, but we won't hold up the release if it doesn't get done. Scislac had contacted the author previously. * Send a reminder email to the author to find status on this Undo/Redo Dialog - HOLD ================ Gustav Broberg (broberg at kth dot se) is planning to try to get the changes Mental suggested prior to the Feature Freeze. We have a patch for this. Also needed is undo annotations. 4/30 - Gustav reports that due to more changes required than expected, this feature will be postponed until the next release. New File Chooser in Export - DONE ========================== We have a patch for this, but there were some thoughts of embedding it in the export dialog directly. In the spirit of "patch first, discuss later", the best approach may be to stick in the current patch for 0.44, see what folks think, and do the embedding later. Test Harness ============ Bryce is working on getting 'make test' working in the test harness. He plans to have this working by the feature freeze date. Additional Release Tasks ======================== The following tasks will need to be done for the release, but are not required to be done prior to the Feature Freeze: * Identify the list of must-fix bugs. As someone suggested, my problem of effects not working on Windows was indeed due to another Python installed in the PATH. After I removed that, it picked up Inkscape's own python and all worked fine. Therefore, I suggest that we do three things: 1. Designate this as a mustfix bug for the release: Inkscape must always use its own python, not something in PATH. Certainly I'm not the only one with Python installed on Windows, so this issue is bound to happen to other people. 2. Enable extensions/effects by default and remove the prefs setting. I don't know of anything that prevents us from doing that. 3. Release a 0.44pre0. Thoughts? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Tutorials

Okay, I've committed the updated Calligraphy & Advanced tutorials in the docbook module and they should be ready for translation updates. If there are any questions on language or terminology (or if you find mistakes/errors), please let me know. I do plan on re-generating the tracing tutorial as soon as I can figure out the problem. Ishmal, if possible could you give me a quick rundown on how SIOX works in Inkscape so I could add that to the tutorial prior to committing? Other than wanting to add SIOX to the tracing tutorial, the only other major change wrt tutorials will be the addition of a new tutorial that covers clipping, masking, and patterns. -Josh

[Bug] Ruler marker does not match cursor

Hi, I have entered a bug in the sourceforge tracker (#1486221) and am also posting it to the list as a courtesy. The ruler markers (little arrows on the rulers that indicate the present cursor position) do not line up with the cursor--when you turn off the scroll bars (Ctrl-B). The markers still seem to retain the correct numerical value for the cursor position on the canvas, but they don't actually line up with the cursor on-screen. -Mason

I don't believe the extentions are powerful enough or stable enough yet, they work very well for the odd export/inport filter but for editing objects? for managing svg in particular ways? for having extenstable options like drop downs ect? I think we should concentrate on getting the extentions to have a nice round api in perl/python/myscripting, where inkscape knows to pass in one objects svg fragment and knows to expect a fragment back, then it knows that to edit that 'object' it calls back to the scripts in a certain way (obviouly what classes as an object being held in the inkscape namespace and all the objects being valid svg). fixed window size and tools toolbar

Hi, Probably I should split this email into two emails, but here it goes :) 1. Is there any particular reason for having fixed minimum size of Inkscape's window? For example, when Commands toolbar is hidden, Inkscape still thinks it's shown and makes it impossible to decrease width of the window. As a result, here the minimum width of window is 948 px, which may be okay for regular using (not in all cases), but clearly not okay for screenshots in documentation (think about screenshooting toolbars). Is it limitation of Gtk toolbars in common? Will splitting Commands toolbar into two or more mini-toolbars help? 2. There is a wasted space between toolbar's handle and the first item in Tools toolbar (the context sensitive one), see attached screenshot. That doesn't happen in case of Selector. Can we do something about it? Alexandre

I get this message: Testing removeRectangleOverlap(zero gaps)... eg0...OK eg2...OK eg3...OK eg4...OK eg5...OK olap6...OK loop0...OK loop1...OK loop2...OK random ints with 0 rectangles...OK random ints with 1 rectangles...OK random ints with 2 rectangles...OK random ints with 3 rectangles...OK random ints with 4 rectangles...OK random ints with 5 rectangles...OK random ints with 6 rectangles...FAIL: removeoverlap/remove_rectangle_overlap-test Is it worth sending such a report to this list. 'make check' did not report any problems lst time I ran it. The tests with the 'random ints' actually take a bit longer than any of the others and sometimes I get a message about an Alarm Clock. Does this indicate something fixable at my end, or a possible problem with the testing system... Or anything in particular? Ben
