How to input non-ASCII characters in Inkscape

I see variants on this question from time to time, like How does one get special characters, like left and right quotes, in Inkscape's text? How do I type Greek/Russian/Chinese/Tamil/... in Inkscape? Here's the answer as best as I know. I hope people can fill in the gaps, and perhaps work on making this easier to do from Inkscape. If you only rarely need to type the odd ‘déjà vu’ or degree sign, then the simplest way is with a gui character selection program like gucharmap (Accessories>Character Map in the Gnome menu, or Text>Unicode character map in the Debian menu system). gucharmap wishlist item (which I haven't yet reported): It might be nice if gucharmap made it a bit easier to find commonly-sought characters (introducing hierarchy into the long list of categories, or adding one or more pseudo-blocks of commonly-sought characters that might span more than one of the named blocks). (In its favour, gucharmap does have a search function that can search in character names & descriptions.) Also, it might be nice if gucharmap were to to show any Multi-key combinations defined for the character (see below). If you type non-ASCII characters a little more often, then you might instead use Compose/Multi-key key sequences. The file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose lists available key sequences. Many of these sequences start with <Multi_key>. Some keyboards have a Compose key labelled as such. Some X sessions are configured to use the right `Alt' key as Compose/Multi. In my case, I use a ~/.xmodmap file that makes my print-screen key act as a compose/multi key: the ~/.xmodmap file contains a line keycode 0x6F = Multi_key Sys_Req and I do xmodmap "$HOME"/.xmodmap in my ~/.xsession file. However, note that some of the key sequences of interest (e.g. Multi_key o o for degree sign, or Multi_key < " for open curly double quote and similarly the corresponding > and ' versions for closing or single quotes) are available only when using the X input method rather than gtk's default input method -- see below. For typing extended blocks of non-Roman script, you'll want to use an input method. The only way I know of to switch between input methods in a running inkscape session is to open the Text dialog box (Ctrl-Shift-T or in the Text menu) and go to its Text tab and right-click in the text entry area: gtk should give you its standard text-entry context menu including an Input Methods submenu. One can change gtk's default input method (usable in Inkscape's standard in-document text entry) with the GTK_IM_MODULE environment variable, e.g. export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim (X input method) or export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim (Chinese, if you have the scim package and its gtk input method on your system). It would be nice if Inkscape offered an Input Methods submenu in its context menu for text entry. Abiword has code to do this in abi/src/af/xap/unix/xap_UnixFrameImpl.cpp:XAP_UnixFrameImpl::_runModalContextMenu, but I haven't looked into that. Should Inkscape do anything else to make it easier to enter non-ASCII characters? Perhaps have an item in the Text menu to launch gucharmap? Should something like this message go into a short tutorial available in the Help menu? pjrm. -- bbyak: swatches, rich text, gradient on canvas... Examples For Presentation on Inkscape

Inkscape Artists, I'm giving a presentation on Inkscape at my local LUG on the 21st, and I need some really outstanding examples of work done in Inkscape so I can really wow them. I've looked at the Wiki page and will be linking to some of the work I found there, but I really need some more examples I can actually put in my OOo Impress presentation, which will subsequently be published on the LUG's web site. I'm interested in receiving examples of your best work of any variety, short bio information (with hyperlink, if applicable), and copyright licensing details, so that I can use them as I've described. Please send to examples@...738... . Also, I would sincerely appreciate an SVG drawing of the Bezier curve mathematical formula. It's for use in the same, but may have other applications as well. [SoC] Applicant for the canvas widget proposal

Hello! I'm interested to work on the proposal to separate the SVG canvas widget from the rest of the program. To submit the application to Google I'm asked the description of the project and I have just sent the text from the wiki. Problems running current cvs

Hi, I updated my local cvs and compiled today's inkscape version. I had to update my gc version to 6.5 (was that a correct move?) Did the regular autogen.sh -> configure -> make -> make install (configure went with the "--prefix=/opt" option in order not to screw up my working inkscape). No errors, all went fine. Now if I run "/opt/bin/inkscape" it does nothing, "/opt/bin/inkview" works as expected though. Any ideas?? Thanks -- Lucas Vieites Fariña Dept. Build failure: need errno include in latex-pstricks.cpp

Hi, I'm getting a build failure (from current public CVS) using GCC 3.4 on Fedora Core 3; it claims to fail because errno is undefined in src/extensions/internal/latex-pstricks.cpp . The attached trivial patch just adds an "#include <errno.h>" to that file; builds and runs fine (as far as I can tell after only a couple of minutes of use) with this. Do you prefer that even trivial issues like this are filed in the bug tracker, or is just hitting the mailing list OK? Translations and Shortcuts with ALT+something

Hello, there is this shortcut for ie. ALT+D to get the clone. But ALT+D ist also in the Menu the mostleft item <File> wich is in German <Datei>. There are two possibilities: 1. change the shortcut for the function in the translated language 2. change the translation of the menu iten so it becomes an other shortcut but 1. I donot feel confident as the shortcuts are across all translations the same no learning needed 2. specially this menu point has a very common translation, an other word would sound strange there How to proceed ? Using GNOME CVS and Bugzilla?

I'd like to ask a question (or rather two): * Are there any plans on using GNOME CVS and GNOME Bugzilla for Inkscape development? Since I've already searched the website and the archives for answers, but didn't really find them, I'd also like to also ask: * Would you be interested in using GNOME CVS and GNOME Bugzilla for Inkscape development? Remember, using either one does not require that you are part of GNOME Core in any way, or that you are required to have any dependencies more than what are already in Inkscape at the moment. To be precise, this is what is required for a piece of software to be in GNOME CVS: http://live.gnome.org/NewCVSModules Notice the lack of "you must use gnome-print", "we will dictate what you should use", "you cannot interoperate with any other platform", "using cvs.gnome.org means you have to eat babies", and so on. ;-) So why would I suggest that Inkscape be using cvs.gnome.org and bugzilla.gnome.org? Well, doing so would make it much more easy for GNOME contributors to contribute to Inkscape (when given permission of course), and obviously also the other way around. I come from a translation perspective, and cross-software contributions are especially important for translation. The GNOME Translation Project (GTP) has more than 115 language teams and many hundreds of translators translating into those languages. We're usually quite successful, and many applications that are placed in GNOME CVS get completely new translations within only a few days. Also, since the translation teams in the GTP cover all of GNOME, the translations are often very consistent in terms of terminology etc. So not only is (at least most of) the software HIG-compliant, it's also consistent in translated terminology. But in order to do that, GNOME translators must have easy access to the software to translate. The reason it currently works is because all translation teams have access to cvs.gnome.org, and so they can translate not only all of GNOME Core, but all other software that's inside GNOME CVS, like Gimp, Dia, Gnumeric, Sodipodi, and so on. What the GNOME translators cannot easily do is translate applications that for some reason are hosted outside of GNOME CVS, like Inkscape. In order to solve that problem, Inkscape would have to be in GNOME CVS. So being in cvs.gnome.org would really be a boost in terms of translations (and probably also other contribution-related areas as well). I'm confident that you'd see quite a lot of improvement in the area of translations just moments after a migration. I hope that it comes without saying that if you should decide that you want to host Inkscape on cvs.gnome.org, I will personally help as much as I can with the migration process. So what are your comments? Ideas? Questions? Flames? (On second thought, please avoid flames ;-) Please cc: me on replies, as I'm not subscribed to the list. Thanks for your consideration, Christian
