We are two master students from the Erasmus University Rotterdam (http://www.eur.nl) in the Netherlands, and we are doing research on the subject of Open Source developer motivation. Inkscape .42 About Screen Contest

Hey all! Since we will be releasing a new version of Inkscape in the near future, we need to have a new about screen done. So... we will now have our second official contest for the Inkscapers on DeviantART. If you are not currently a DeviantArt member and are interested, please use the link below to sign up to be able to show us what you can do. Basics: *Our goal is to show off what inkscape can do in a somewhat artistic manner with the intent of giving credit to all of the project contributors. *We also recommend using a current CVS version (nightly build) to attempt to show off some new features. Nightly builds can be obtained from our downloads page (link is below) under the "Development Versions" section. *Upload your submission to your gallery or scraps on DeviantART and post a link and description at the link below. Rules: *The canvas dimensions must be 750x625 px / 600x500 pt (your image can bleed outside of the canvas, but anything outside of the canvas border will not be rendered) *It must be made in Inkscape only with no post processing as we will require the SVG file to use for the about screen *It must load relatively fast since it will be rendered in real-time when someone views the about screen *It must include the full list of Authors from the link above (flowtext would be recommended) *It must include the version number (.42) *It must not contain anything offensive *Have fun! Deadline: *June 21st, 2005 Prize: *Having your art be the About screen for the new version and a credit for your work. Judging: *Preliminary judging will be done by the Inkscape community on DeviantART, when we have an official "Top 3", the judging will then be turned over to the inkscape developers for final judging. Inkscape Project joins Google's Summer of Code

Google has accepted the Inkscape project as an available mentor for their Summer of Code program. In this program, students can undertake a coding project for the mentoring project. Google will award $4500 to the student for completion of the work, and donate $500 to the sponsoring organization. John Cliff was instrumental in motivating us to get involved, and will be serving as the primary coordinator and point of contact. He will help link students up with Inkscape developers and keep an eye on the overall process. He has created this page listing ideas for projects: http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Googles_Summer_Of_Code (I'd like to propose that the $500 provided to Inkscape be used as a bounty for a follow-on project to the given work, such as review, integration, testing, documentation, etc. to be determined by the student with guidance from the inkscape developers.) If you're a student in the U.S. and can code, you may find this to be an extremely enjoyable way to spend your summer! The due date for your application to Google is June 14th. Project proposal advice

Some of the people writing proposals for Inkscape projects had questions about if they were proposing a "big enough" project, and worried that they needed to have more ambitious features. Translation doubts

Hi, I'm updating the spanish translation for the 0.42 release and I'm running into some doubts: /src/dialogs/tiledialog.cpp - line 817: "Equal Height": Is this a verb like in: "I'm going to make the height equal, I will equal the heights.", or rather "These objects have the same heights, they have equal heights" - line 886: "Equal Width": idem - BBox: Is this short for "bounding box"? (This functionality is also called a canvas.) The scene may be displayed simultaneously in multiple windows, possibly on separate clients. Rendering of the scene is done via Cairo and Pango, which in turn support multiple targets, e.g. Windows, MacOS, Postscript, Xlib, etc. The scene may be accessed and manipulated by multiple processes, enabling compound documents. The SVG Scene library supports ownership of content model elements by widgets of high-level application frameworks, but is not tied in to such frameworks. The current release is a prototype that requires Windows 2000 or later, and renders using native Win32 functions. Full source code is included in the download, licensed under GNU LGPL.
