Emergency save but file not present?

Hi, on IRC, we had two occurrences on the last two days where people had crashes with emergency save activated, but didn't have a saved file around. One of them was Thomas Vander Stichele (from Fluendo), and he is running 0.43 from Fedora Core 4, and the file has not been saved before. Is there something we can do to make that emergency save as bulletproof as possible? This is one of the worst bugs to have IMO. Of course, crashes should not happen in the first place, but if they happen... Cheers, Colin

Bug fixing energy seems to be dwindling. To me this means it is release time. I'd like to get input from others on a few topics. 1) Translation status. Translation is an eternal project. I don't know how to quantify what is good enough for release. Arpad, Matiphas, how are we doing? I think it is time to get serious about this hard freeze and turn to patches, but I want to make sure you are ready. 2) Quality assurance. I looked through the bug tracker. We have some new issues. The font selector crash [1501150] is easy to reproduce, but also quite easy to avoid. Jon was looking into [1501156] last I heard. I've been waiting to hear from bbyak about the snapping bugs [1429049]. I think we are going to hear about [1497837] libgc-6.7 a lot but there seems to be a solution. Are we release quality? If not, I think we are very close. What do others think? 3) Stable branch. We're switching things up a bit this time. We have had a slightly warmed over freeze. And we plan to maintain a stable branch for 0.44. Could we perhaps tie up loose ends and tighten down our committing habits tomorrow, Thursday June 8th? Then in the evening US Central time, I will branch 0.44 we can begin the absolute freeze on that branch, all fixes going into the tracker, and reopen HEAD for those eager to wreak havoc. If all goes well cut the release from the branch on Tuesday. Sound like a plan? Speak up now. :-) Aaron Spike

OLPC and SVG

I just hit a short entry on the One Laptop Per Child's interface, and it's chat program. It uses Zeroconf and SVG! http://www.eschoolnews.com/eti/2006/05/001414.php Guess I've got to dust off my old Intel PC to try to get an VM running that now. Aside from other things, it might be very interesting to get interoperable with that. Perhaps even add that as a "target platform" for Inkscape drawing, etc. like SVG Tiny... Plus there's mention of a custom protocol. hmmm.....

Inkscape 0.44 Hard Freeze

Hi all, We have just this evening reached our bug fixing goal. There is one must-fix bug (see below) but I think it may be out of date anyway. Thus, tonight we are officially moving into Hard Freeze, the final phase in the release cycle before Inkscape 0.44 is released. >From this point until release, DO NOT COMMIT anything to SVN without approval from our Release Wardens (Jon Cruz and Aaron Spike). If you have bug fixes to contribute, please post them to the patch tracker and notify them. Jon and Aaron, you two now have absolute authority over the codebase between now and when 0.44.0 is tagged. Use this time to review the codebase for any last minute bugs, must-fix bugs that we've missed until now, or other flaws that should be fixed before release. When you feel things are ready, create the 0.44.0 tag. We will split into the stable 0.44 and development 0.45 branches at that point. I would encourage you two to try to complete the Hard Freeze within a week. Ideally, it should only take a few days to check and finalize everything, so that should be doable. If it looks like it'll take longer, let's discuss some alternate plans. Here is the status for the remaining bugs I know about: * We have just a single must-fix bug left (#1489175 "Win2K: Crash on Startup: entry point FreeAddrInfo not found"), however from the limited information on that bug, it sounds like it's probably out of date, so I'm not going to worry about it. You can take a look at it and decide what to do about it. #1489175 * There's some snapping bugs that haven't gotten attention, that you may want to review. They weren't included in the must-fix list due to lack of owner. #1488128 * We've gotten a bunch of reports from Debian Unstable users about Inkscape failing to run. This affects users of both old 0.43 and 0.44pre1. Dunno if this is a distro issue, or a gtk issue, or what, but probably needs more analysis. #1497837 * There are still some font issues related to the new font control. If you feel these have not been adequately addressed, consider disabling the font rendering in the font selector for this release, or other actions to hide the issue until post-release. #1494337 There's probably others, but you can decide the ones you care most about. Remember though, at this point the game is to minimize the impact of the bugs, rather than to see them fixed. This may mean hiding the symptoms (or trading them for more tolerable bugs), or simply list them as known issues, and put them on the must-fix list for 0.44.1. Bryce

make distcheck ?

Is this still a stumbling block? I can get 'make check' to work, but 'make distcheck' fails with a message like: In file included from ../../src/test-all.cpp:483: ../../src/color-profile-test.h:8:26: test-helpers.h: No such file or directory It seems to have unpacked the tarball, configured and 'made' it, and is failling at doing a 'make check' on the fresh tree. 1. Is this what 'make distcheck' should be doing? And is it necessary? 2. It looks to me as if 'test-helpers.h' is not being put into the .tgz I am working on the basis that either this file should be so included, or 'make distcheck' should not be requiring it. Grateful for any advice or suggestions. It may be that there is some part of the invocation of 'make distcheck' that I am not doing properly ... Ben

Of the frequently reported "known problems", one bug is especially annoying because it is caused by nothing else but a call to a standard GDK function. For some reason, this call triggers an assert if xorg.conf has a "Composite" extension enabled. For details and pointers, see this bug's comments: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=1457003&group_… In brief, the trouble is caused by GDK calls from sp_dash_selector_menu_item_new in widgets/dash-selector.cpp In Inkscape, this code did not change since Sodipodi times. It may be that we use the GDK functions in a wrong or deprecated way, or it may be that GDK itself is broken. This is the only place these functions are used in the entire codebase, and it's a bit embarassing to crash because of such trivial thing. pre3 - Dapper compile errors - littleCMS

Am trying to compile on Dapper - added the perl xml and libgc dependencies but now it fails on a little CMS dependency that I can't find in synaptic. Any ideas ?
