Digits of precision

Hi all, I just rediscovered bugs #171486 and #171980, which both request higher precisions for grids/guides/document size, etc. I'm not a graphics designer, but the reasoning that people often need 1/16 (=0.0625) inch measurements makes sense to me. I gather that multiple degrees of precision are used throughout Inkscape. Grids allow 4 digits, guidelines 3, but document size (for example) only provides 2. I haven't checked all the other places but I'm wondering if it would make sense to unify all these. Isn't having different precisions simply inconsistent and annoying for users who need high precision for their work? Would this be a difficult/time consuming change or do people think it is something that can be achieved (or is desirable at all) for 0.46? In this case, what would be a good level of precision? Is there any reason not to provide 4 digits everywhere (apart from space considerations, maybe)? I hope this hasn't been discussed before or I'm touching on a sensitive issue. Just wondering. Max

Which attributes to store in plain SVG?

Hi all, in the _write() methods for most SPObjects there are some lines of code similar to the following (this example is taken from sp-rect.cpp): if ((flags & SP_OBJECT_WRITE_BUILD) && !repr) { Inkscape::XML::Document *xml_doc = sp_document_repr_doc(SP_OBJECT_DOCUMENT(object)); repr = xml_doc->createElement("svg:rect"); } I have been wondering for quite some time in which situations these are called at all. Just now I discovered that this is the case when saving a file as plain SVG. Are there other circumstances, too? I'm asking because I'd like to know what kind of attributes should be set when building an object like this. For example, when I want to create a 3D box with this piece of code, should I set the "sodipodi:type" attribute or should I leave it out (so that effectively only an ordinary svg:g is created)? I'm inclined towards the latter because otherwise when the file is reopened there are also some other attributes missing (since it was saved as plain SVG) so the box is not shown at all because Inkscape is missing some information necessary to render it correctly. I just wanted to ask if my reasoning is correct or if I'm missing anything. Generally, it would be interesting to know what kinds of attributes should be saved to plain SVG. Apparently, various Inkscape-specific elements are saved (like LPEs), but they seem to be stripped off some attributes that might be necessary to fully recover them. Hi, another thing I just stumbled across: A couple of objects like filters, LPEs, gradients, etc. have something like this in their build methods: /* Register ourselves */ sp_document_add_resource(document, "gradient", object); ... and the corresponding code in the _release() method. What precisely does this do and what is it good for? What kinds of objects should "register themselves" and why? Thanks, Max

printing broken!

The new print dialog looks impressive, but it does not work. I choose print to lpr and nothing happens (ubuntu 6.10). It worked fine before the last overhaul (about a month ago). Print preview button also does nothing, just closes the print dialog. Printing to file also fails to create any file. Well that symbol I gave was just an example of the BZ2_bzCompress@...1849.... @ notation. But yes, I would like to compile it without bzip2 support, but I'm not quite sure how to do that on windows command line. Do I use the source code from the bzip2 website or off the MingW/MSYS website? Do I compile on the windows command line? or in some other more linux friendly shell? or even in linux itself? MSYS uses a different runtime all together, its not supposed to be used for non-MSYS apps. RSVG dependancies

Hi All, After bulia's earlier comment about the possibility of rendering SVG previews with RSVG, I did some investigation. I think this *is* the way to go. Already I've got cairo working very nicely feeding graphics into my preview pane. librsvg looks pretty straight-forward as well. I'm having a slight problem adding the rsvg dependency. It seems that the version of the lib in the bundle has been compiled with bzip2.dll as a dependency. I can't possibly see why it would need to support that, but if we were to add bzip2, that only adds another 60kB. Problem is, I can't find a version of bzip2 which will play nice with librsvg.dll because the exported symbols in the my MSYS version of the dll that I have, are of the form "BZ2_bzCompress", but librsvg-2-2.dll imports "BZ2_bzCompress@...1333...". Where do the DLLs in the bundle come from? Could librsvg be compiled without bzip2 support? or Is a version of bzip2.dll with the correct exports available somewhere? and can I get that dll before the next bundle is released? because I don't want to wait for months any suggestions?
