Draw Freely: Inkscape Announces 0.45 Release February 5, 2007 - The Inkscape community today announced the newest version of its cross-platform open source vector graphic drawing software, Inkscape. Inkscape 0.45 features a new Gaussian Blur SVG filter. Sponsored by Google's Summer of Code program, Gaussian Blur allows you to softly and naturally blur any Inkscape objects, including shapes, text, and images. This enables a wide range of photorealistic effects: arbitrarily shaped shades and lights, depth of field, drop shadows, glows, etc. Also, blurred objects can be used as masks for other objects to achieve the "feathered mask" effect. Numerous other new features, enhancements to existing features, and bug fixes have been included. A history dialog allows you to browse your change history. Many new extension effects are added including Pattern along Path and Color Effects. There are performance improvements to rendering speed, on the order of 2-3% in general, and up to 5-10% for drawings using heavy transparency and/or radial gradients. Compositing quality is also improved through the removal of banding seen in gradients. The Inkscape community invites anyone to contribute to the project. The project is now working on the upcoming 0.46 release which will focus on the initial stages of adding SVG animation support, increasing the apps PDF functionality, and other refactoring tasks. On a global scale, Inkscape is pushing for version 0.50 to have full compatibility with SVG Mobile/Tiny. Then, the ultimate large goal is to get to Inkscape 1.0 which will be a fully W3C SVG 1.1 compliant application. The more help the project receives, the faster the aforementioned goals will be accomplished. User Interface Feature Request

Hi, Thanks for all the Inkscape developers! If I have to chose just one app in a "dumb terminal" it will be Inkscape! As Interaction/Interface Designer in training, I have one trivial (I guess) feature request for the next major (a là Mac, ie: 3.1 to 3.2) release: current: http://www.zensui.org/img/Inkscape-default.png (proposed) simplified W3C box-inspired edition: http://www.zensui.org/img/Inkscape-clean.png note that the box can use this user configurable names (parameters in code?): background = black border = green content = white the border can be excluded to avoid "feature cripple". For all the use I get out of inkscape, I'd like to pitch in with this. I figure it would be a good way to get my feet wet, and I've been hawking this list long enough. The most coding I've done is some really basic php scripting, but I'm somewhat familiar with the basics, so if someone would tell me what to do, I'd be happy to pitch in. Crash handler locks X

Sometimes Inkscape crashes while performing an operation that grabs the X pointer. It displays the crash handler window but the Ok button can't be clicked. In fact the entire X session is locked. I have to log into a tty and kill either Inkscape or the WM to be able to continue. Of course we don't crashes to happen, but I wonder if calling XUngrabPointer() in the crash handler would prevent them freezing my desktop? Dan

Ooops! I forgot to convert the "Inkscape 0.45" wording to curves.... Attached is a corrected SVG file, please could someone add it to the release? In the attached jpg you can have a look at how it should look. About the "cutted" blur, well there is unfortunately nothing I can do about as it seems to be the behaviour of Inkscape... custom default templates

Patch from Debian has been applied to SVN HEAD: "Custom default templates can now be specified per-user. Start a new document, make any customizations you wish - such as changing the paper size - and save to ~/.inkscape/templates/default.svg. Now, all new documents you create will be created with this template." Bryce

Packaging & Marketing for 0.45

I've just posted the source tarball for 0.45 to sourceforge. Packagers, please create the packages from this. :-) (Also, please consider gpg signing your release packages - there are some notes for this on the CreatingDists page in Wiki.) It's also time for us to create the release announcement for this release. Anyone interested in helping me on this? Bryce

Johan: I noticed that as a result of your patch here: http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/exte… now Inkscape always saves file with sodipodi:modified="true" because you moved the omod->save before that attribute is set to NULL instead of after as before. Was there any reason for it? It looks wrong, sodipodi:modified should never be saved I think. I fixed it by moving the NULLing of that one attribute before the actual save.
