NEW: GNOME-VFS from Open/Save/Export

I'm trying out the bulia-style announcement. I applied a simple patch that allows us to use non-local URIs in addition to local paths via Gnome-VFS by using GTK file chooser on the Open, Save ___, and Export dialogs. This means you can use webdav shares, samba mounts, sftp/ssh shares, now...basically, any backend that gnome-vfs supports, we should be able to use. So, in effect, one could work on files from a bluetooth phone filesystem (if so inclined ;). Before, Gnome-VFS support, Bryce setup as a configure-time option, --with-gnome-vfs, which appears to be turned on by default (even without the configure-time option). And, one could open any URI that gnome-vfs supported from the commandline. So, now we have the added capability So, please test this out. Also, I'm curious if/how this works on Windows and Mac OS X. In particular, there are people in the chat channel asking how to break words apart into letters on an almost weekly basis. Sorry to forward a few of these to the inkscape-devel list, but I think its an interesting issue for us to deal with, especially as so many open mobile/ubiquitous devices are on the horizon, plus, it helps us track down memory leaks, etc. Mental, this seems like it might interest you a bit? Also, could some others comment. What are the top five ways we can practically lower these memory requirements? Inkscape 0.45 crashes during the start on Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Hi there, The problem is already mentioned in the subject. For starters, I must admit, that I never had problems with X11 applications, including previous relases of Inkscape. I am using the ibook G4, so it is not related to the Intel architecture. When I start Inkscape 0.45, I have a messeage about long time need for caching the fonts etc., and after clicking "OK" the Inkscape disappears from Dock, and in Console I can see following output: bash: no job control in this shell dyld: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/bin/inkscape-bin Undefined symbols: /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Get_BDF_Property expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib undefined reference to _FT_Load_Sfnt_Table expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib Some other people have the same problem on their Macs, and the bugs have been reported on bugtracker here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1654068&group_id=93438&atid=604306 and here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1652913&group_id=93438&atid=604306 Please, fix this bug ASAP, or find some remedy, if this is caused by local settings.

NEW: faster blur

I committed the patch by Jasper which implements a faster blur algorithm, so now the Gaussian blur must be noticeably faster in the SVN trunk. Everyone using gaussian blur, please test the new code with regard to: - any especially bad artefacts? (as before, lowering quality in Preferences > Filters introduces some artefacts, but they look reasonable, I think even nicer than with the old algorithm) - how much faster it is on your images? (test on different zooms and with export; we need some estimates to put into the release notes) - is the range of quality/speed settings adequate? or would you like to have a still faster/lower quality step? - any other problems? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Here are some things that were added to SVN since 0.45 but not yet announced here: * Smart redraw: With complex images and/or on slow computers, you may have noticed that Inkscape redraws the screen image in horizontal strips, and these strips are painted sequentially top to bottom. Now this direction is automatically changed based on where your mouse cursor is. In particular, if mouse is closer to the bottom of the area to redraw, strips will be painted in the bottom-to-top order. This significantly improves the responsiveness and interactivity in some situations. For example, when you are node-editing the bottom part of a complex path, the entire path needs to be redrawn on each change, but now this redraw starts from the bottom and therefore the you see the effect of your changes at once - i.e. while screen redraw may still lag behind your mouse movement, this lag is less noticeable. * If the selected object(s) have gradient in fill or stroke, the selected style indicator in the bottom-left corner of the editing window now displays a live gradient preview prefixed by R or L to indicate Radial or Linear gradients (instead of displaying "L Gradient" or "R Gradient" text labels as before). Also, this and other similar widget now use italic font face to indicate None and bold to indicate Unset. * In Gradient tool, when you have one of the gradient handles selected, its style (color and opacity) is reflected by the selected style indicator (left of the statusbar) and the Fill&Stroke dialog. Previously, opacity of a gradient handle was reflected as fill-opacity and stroke-opacity; now it is reflected as master opacity (the "O:" spinbutton in the selected style indicator, the "Master opacity" slider in Fill&Stroke). Already told abouton IRC but I'm working on Inkscape 2 pages for LGM brochure that will be distributed with the canadian well-known Grafika magazin (4000 ex there). In order to Illustrate, we'd need the best design have ever been made with Inkscape, with reproduction permission for free (please). You can send me files or links as soon as you can. pygmee
