font crashes

I solved the Pango font crashes related to Font descriptions not having a family name specified (the "1979" font bug). I'm not sure what other bugs it'll fix, but I made a testcase for Pango and opened a bug for them. I set up code to work around it, or at least avoid the crash in a worse-case situation. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

Hi all, I made FC2 RPMs for all the inkscape dependencies -- the reason is that I personally was quite annoyed when I first started toying around inkscape code because I needed to compile all these dependencies... these _should_ work on FC3 as well... String 'sanitizer' routine

I just dumped a simple routine into io/sys.h to return a 'safe' version of any given string. Inkscape::IO::sanitizeString The most immediate need is for those places where we might be displaying an error for a potentially bad path (such as when we're unable to create a file or directory). It will return a copy of the string as-is if it's valid UTF-8, otherwise it will walk through and escape all non-ASCII bytes. That should at least stop Pango crashes from hiding true problems or from turning warnings into crashes, like bug 1107305. Soo...... I'm hitting bed now, but anyone can feel free to try it out in a few critical places.

Beatwave Mobile Designer + Profiles

I found this app today while researching new places to send PR for releases. It implements profiles for different versions of SVG and is up to spec on animation, effects, object library, palettes, etc. I took screenshots of the app so that we can learn from their implementation. While I think that Inkscape is a great drawing tool, this one has SVG Basic, Tiny, and other version of SVG as profiles that are reconfigurable. You can even make your own. Also, the animation tools are very far out and usable. Hi, A few questions regarding Inkscape translation: 1. "Invert black and white regions for single traces" What does a "single" trace mean? By "black and white regions", do you mean "regions that are black-and-white" or "black regions and white regions"? 2. "Brightness cutoff for black/white" Does this mean "Reduce brightness of black-and-white stuff"? -------------------------------- share/tutorials/making_markers.svg is not in share/tutorials/Makefile.am -- is this intentional? --------------------------------- Also, a few things that may need to be changed: 1. "Reset all shifts, scales, rotates, and opacities to zero" Wouldn't it be better if it said something like "opacity changes" instead of "opacities"? 2. At startup, the messages "One or more extensions failed to load. ..." and "Show dialog on startup" are always displayed in English (yes, translated in the language file). 3. loading large files

I've finally had an opportunity to spend some time analyzing the problem you had loading that large SVG. Your file did eventually load, although I think it may have taken as much as half an hour to do so on my machine. In Inkscape, sibling XML nodes are currently kept in singly-linked lists, which are not an efficient data structure when dealing with large numbers of siblings (in this case, more than 87000). It is possible to use faster data structures, but they would come at the cost of using extra memory. As it was, once the document loaded my machine ran out of memory when the renderer kicked in. So, I'm not really sure what the best course of action would be. I do think we have a problem dealing with large documents in general. I am CCing the development list for their suggestions. -mental

Bug status for 0.41 release

Here is the status on the remaining three 'Must-Fix' bugs for the release: 1107922 all drawing tools crash [mental, bulia, pjrm] I believe mental has been working on this today, but don't know the status beyond that. Mental, could you update us? 1107305 Cannot start (WIN) [nemies, bryce, joncruz] This one is a UTF-8 issue; Inkscape is trying to determine the user's profile_path based on their username, which in this user's case includes a u with an umlaut. mkdir fails when passed a u with a umlaut, which causes this bug. Jon is working on producing a function that will clean the non-UTF8-isms. 1050361 svgz opening troubles (WIN) [ishmal, simarilus, scislac] I hear that this requires some packaging changes for the Windows build. The fix appears to be known, it's just a matter of a packager with some time to implement. Bryce

Since we're so close to the release I stuck with the most conservative changes, but they should still result in a measurable improvement when loading large files. I've tested and everything seems OK, but it wouldn't hurt to double-check me given my track record as of late... :/ -mental

Bug 1107305

Well... now that things are tracked down, it looks like something I can get a handle on. Right off the bat it's probably related to 1094203. There could be a few others of mine that this problem is a part of. Though I'm not setup to test Win32 at the moment, I'm pretty sure I can do some nice Win32 fixes and get at least this part going. Additionally, it seems that bad filenames are part of the problem. For example, in this case we're probably getting that users' home directory in Cp-1252 and feeding it to the output routines that want UTF-8. To fix this, I can knock off a quick routine to 'sanitize' the data and make it safe for output. I'm also thinking that many things might benefit from this. (Since I can't actually test, you may not want to move this bug to me, but I think I can do all the work to fix it)

Well, I think I figured out how to crosscompile libgc 6.4 for the win32 compile. However, I can't seem to link the win32 version any more. Inkboard linking/dependencies

Where/how do you set dependencies in the Inkscape makefile setup? When integrating this new code(which is of course in it's own file) to be called from a dialog, we're having issues with linking. It finds the function definition, but then gives the following error: dialogs/libspdialogs.a(inkboard-connect.o)(.text+0xa91): In function `sp_inkboardConnect_dialog_inkboardConnect(_GObject*, _GObject*)': dialogs/inkboard-connect.cpp:226: undefined reference to `connect_and_auth(char*, char*, char*)' connect_and_auth is defined in src/inkboard.cpp and is called from src/dialogs/inkboard-connect.cpp when the user clicks a button on the new dialog. I ran mkfiles.pl and mkdep.pl. Make.dep lists inkboard-connect.o being dependent on inkboard.h, but it's not picking up the function definition. We appreciate any help/direction on this. Memory leak with pango_layout_new()

If anyone is investigating memory leaks, this issue may be worth looking into: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-app-devel-list/2004-September/msg00150.h… We use pango_layout_new() in the ruler.cpp code and the font-selector.cpp code via libnrtype/TextWrapper.cpp, so if the above leak is valid, it may be affecting the inkscape codebase as well. Here's my take on which bugs we must/should/ought to (try to) fix for the release, some of them because they're bad, some because they're relatively easy to fix or maybe already fixed. Those on Windows are marked correspondingly. Can everyone please go through the list and see if you can reproduce/add more details/report status/fix it/whatever? Help from Windows folks is especially appreciated. WIN 1069560 - annoying and pretty frequent, does anyone has an idea of what's happening there? 1108667 & 1086769 - may be the same bug but may be not, I cannot check because I don't have these input methods installed 1107922 - may be fixed by now, but I never could reproduce it anyway WIN 1107305 - something's wrong with Windows paths after Kees changed them. Need more details. 1102678 - need to force libxml to load external DTD (OK, I'll look at it once more, now that I have a newer libxml) WIN 1095300 - need more info from windows folks, is it still there? 1093060 - an easy-to-run-into freeze, I upped priority to 9, must be fixed (Mental?) WIN 1050361 - still can't open svgz on windows (again!)? It used to work, does anyone know what happened? 1055034 - do we now check for correct versions of libsigc? Can this be closed? WIN 1070816 - I guess there's no progress on this one. Looks like we'll have to release with it again. WIN 1073459 - This one frustrates me. It may be fixed but we can't figure out for sure yet. I asked about it before but got no definitive answer. Those who builds on Windows: Please check which version of libgc (boehm) you are using. If it is 6.4 AND you use latest CVS, see if you can reproduce this bug. If it's not 6.4, ask the person you got it from (Ishmal?) for this version. PLEASE LET'S CLOSE THIS ONE. It alone is worth a release. WIN 1076627 - Jon Cruz is working on that, is there chance it will be fixed? WIN 1068818 & 959352 - this may be the same bug or may be not.

DTD loading problems

Trying to fix the loading of documents that do not contain xlink namespace declaration but instead rely on external DTD subset to supply it (bugs 1042161 and 1102678), I replaced the xmlParseFile call to the newer xmlReadFile call with these options: doc = xmlReadFile (localFilename, NULL, XML_PARSE_RECOVER | XML_PARSE_NOENT | XML_PARSE_DTDLOAD) in sp_repr_read_file. This fixed the namespace bug. However this resulted in loading the external DTD across the network for ALL regular Inkscape files too! This is because all our files contain <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd"> which is really not necessary at all and even non-compliant (because with our extension elements, we will likely fail validation with that DTD). However that DTD reference is being inserted since Sodipodi times and is now in all old files. And this means that these files will now have a delay on load while libxml fetches the DTD from the net, and will generate an error if you try to load them while network is not available. So, I did not commit this change, and I'm really not sure what to do about it. Should we try to supply our own catalog to the parser, which would force it to use a local copy of the DTD (which we also must therefore supply)? This sounds like a lot of hassle. Or just forbid the parser to access the net and suppress the error (this is possible)? But then the xlink namespace bugs will remain unfixed. And can/should we, at least, stop inserting the DOCTYPE in the files we create? It really serves no useful purpose, IMHO.

Jizzbug, In reading the HIG I notice it specifies that labeled widgets in dialogs must have access keys in their labels. Feature Freeze for 0.41

Hi all, We will be entering feature freeze mode today, Jan 26th, as mentioned in the bug status message on 1/24, unless anyone has any objections. At this point, changes to the codebase should be restricted to bugfixing activity. If you have feature work still needing wrapped up, please try to do so today. For the next couple of weeks, if you wish to continue to do development work while the release is coming together, you're encouraged to do so on a branch or in the experimental module. See Wiki for details. Around Feb 1st, we'll switch to a hard freeze mode. At this point the focus will narrow to showstopper and packaging bugs. We'll be putting out release candidates at this point for folks to test out. The final release will probably come a few days after the hard freeze, assuming everything goes well. Thanks, Bryce

Inkscape icons and resolution

Hi all, This is just a random thought: is it possible for the icons to be differently stroked depending on the resolution? For example, I think many of the icons look much crisper (to me, at least) if I decrease the stroke width. However, if I go to a higher resolution display, they will perhaps look too "broken". -Ashwin

inkscape_gtkmm: new dialog designs and other things

Howdy, I thought I'd post about the current state of inkscape_gtkmm. Here's a screenshot I just made showing off a few things (check it out before reading on): http://thestraycat.org/~derekm/inkscape/inkscape_gtkmm.png The Trace, Transform, and About dialogs in that screenshot are using libglademm and their XML specification in share/ui/glade/dialogs.glade to do most of the work. If you'd like to help make/improve dialogs for the Gtkmm conversion effort, fetch: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/inkscape/experimental/bryce/inkscape_… I have a few different prototypes for the Trace dialog. I tend to think probably Trace3.png. The "Inkscape Preferences" dialog shown in the screenshot is unfinished (many of its pages are blank) and doesn't use Glade. I'm just showing it to emphasize the current state of things. Besides the dialogs shown in the screenshot, there are only a few more mostly unfinished dialogs in the inkscape_gtkmm codebase. However, empty placeholders do exist in the code for all dialogs that need to be implemented. I've been working a lot on the dialogs lately, and andreas_n has started helping out. I have a "Document Properties" dialog I'm finishing, and andreas_n has said he's starting on the "Object Properties" dialog. I've been experimenting a lot with libglademm in the dialogs, and I'm becoming rather in favor of libglademm's use in the Gtkmm-ification effort. I've been able to create dialogs much quicker and more efficiently with libglademm, it's very flexible and simple to work with (imho). JonCruz and Bryce have been doing more work on the Units subsystem. JonCruz has brought an XML format and parser (via his new SimpleSAX stuff) to Units (for loading unit definitions, ratios, etc. at runtime from XML [instead of Bryce's original flat text file]). It also looks like SimpleSAX could be used for the new preferences system that's yet to be written for the Gtkmm-ification work. Anyways, that's all I've got to report... Anybody else got anything? I think that this argument is moot, as I think that Derek and I have agreed on option 3. Well, Jeez.... I agree with you on most things, but I'm afraid that I must disagree on this one small thing. The different tracing algorithms need different parameters. Crowding a small set of "user friendly" params onto a mismatched set of algorithms would not work. "Single scan" and "multi scan" are artificial ideas that I made up myself to fit my 3 input filters and 2 output filters onto Potrace. They do not map to anything but my weak idea of how to wedge Potrace into Inkscape. They are all silly tricks on how to make a black & white tracer work on color bitmaps. Potrace does NOT do color. The next tracer (not Autotrace) that I have in mind works natively in colorspace, with no intermediate bitmap (thus no Preview) and works by tracing along lines of constant color slope. Papers for Technical Conferences?

Interested in writing a technical paper about Inkscape? We're now in "Tech Paper Season", when the proposals for papers are coming due for many technical conferences between now and March, such as OSCON, LWE, etc. What's due right now is not the paper itself but just the proposal. That's a couple paragraphs and the promise to write a full paper if your proposal is accepted. Why write a journal paper on Inkscape? First, it's an extremely good way to earn some PR for Inkscape. Second, published technical papers are something you can include on your resume or CV for your whole career. If you have a career in either art or programming, that will be a solid foundation stone for you. Third, it helps move Inkscape into a more "professional" space and will help encourage all of us to make the tool even better. If you're unsure about writing a technical paper alone, or want a co-author, let me know. I may write something myself but would much prefer co-authoring with other folks. Tell me your ideas and let's see what we can do. For topics, there are clearly three topics we can provide information about: Computer Graphics, Programming/Technology, and Open Source Processes. Probably more beyond that. Obviously, no guarantees getting a paper accepted, except if we don't try, we'll definitely not be accepted. But the more we try, the more opportunities we have to succeed. ;-) Bryce

I encourage you all to read his comments which I found very interesting. I didn't want to crosspost to the user list, I'll try and remember to post the link there later when this thread is done. You may already be familiar with Jimmac or at be familiar with his work because he's created significant amounts of artwork from Gnome and he works for Ximian. http://jimmac.musichall.cz/ The review is pretty thorough (long for a journal entry) and I wouldn't be surprised if various news sources pick up on it (but I'm not going to be the one feeding it to them). It is great that he has finally given Inkscape a try. Read his post first to see the praise and suggestions which I've skipped for brevity. I'll try and respond to some of his questions and criticisms: Jimmac mentions things not being consistant with the GNU Image Manipulation Program. Hopefully as things get more configurable and more standard widgets are used (part of the plan) users will be able to resolve much of that for themselves. Error dialog help

So, I've decided that I just can't write error dialogs. Can someone write reasonable text for the error dialog in: src/extension/error-file.cpp. It should just tell the user that some extensions failed, and check the error log. * The quick layer selector in the statusbar now displays hidden layers grayed out and locked layers enclosed in []. This makes it much easier to see at a glance what is visible and unlocked in the document. The current layer is now marked by a bullet. Suggestions are welcome as to what other (better :) typographic conventions can be used for representing hidden and locked layer status.

Hey all, I'm one of the Rose-Hulman students working on adding a whiteboard feature to Inkscape. So, we're trying to intergrate some code into Inkscape builds. The prototype code was being compiled with g++ using these cflags: "-I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/local/include/loudmouth-1.0 -lglib-2.0 -lloudmouth-1" Where in the makefiles do we need to place these flags so they'll be used when building stuff that needs the loudmouth libraries? clone breakage

Argh. Clones appear broken in latest CVS. For the moment, I'm assuming it was me, as I did a relatively large repr-related commit recently. I'm a bit puzzled though; the work I did was almost entirely reorganizing code around rather than changing algorithms, and clones were one thing I tested with the new code. Maybe I was lucky and hit a particular corner case that still worked... I'll experiment more. FWIW, so far as I can tell everything still functions correctly up through sp_use_build, at least. I'll continue to narrow things down, but if anyone has any ideas that would help. Also, the one set of algorithms I _did_ change were the implementation sp_repr_position/sp_repr_set_position (the guts are now in xml/simple-node.cpp). If someone could review my changes to make sure I didn't do anything stupid there, that'd be much appreciated. -mental

It is something that could be done by hand somewhat easily. It would be a really cool feature if someone implemented a command line option to the Extensions system to allow for batch conversion between any supported formats. It would be an easier enhancement for someone who wanted to get familiar with the codebase. There wouldn't be any GUI programming, or using lots of the codebase that would be required. XForms for extensions and UI

I've been kickout out the possiblity of implementing some basic XForms or XForms-ish implementation for our UI, including for the extension & scripting support. Among other things, I think it would shift things around and get them more useable than just putting in .glade file and libglade parsing. It's a bit similar to XUL, but with a focus that I think is more appropriate for our needs. Anyway, I came across this article that gives a quick overview of some things, and how it might benefit us. Roadmap updated

With Scislac's help, the Roadmap's been updated: http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Roadmap Basically, we've just moved all the milestones forward one release, so that 0.41 can be released fairly soon (it'll be mostly just bug fixing). I've also outlined more of the work in the Gtkmm section for 0.42. Please everyone take a moment to look through the roadmap and check that the things you plan to work on in 2005 are listed in there, and add them (with your name), if not. Also, PLEASE consider volunteering for some of the Gtkmm tasks by listing your name next to some tasks. Remember that the current gtkmm code is going to be integrated into the main codebase as soon as 0.41 hits the shelves, and there's a lot to do so the more help, the sooner we'll get through it. Gtkmm is not hard to learn if you know C++. I estimate at least two more weeks before we're ready to freeze for 0.41, so expect the Gtkmm work to become the project's focus by the end of Feb. I suspect it may take 2-4 months of work to complete, although given a lot of participation we could probably cut that in half. Bryce

button sizes?

Sorry it's me ranting again. Do we HAVE to have those large buttons? I find them clumsy at this size. Up to now, there was: - a meaningful hierarchy of sizes: main tool buttons large, tool control buttons small. - a coordination of the sizes of the buttons and the rest of controls (spinbuttons, etc). Both these are now broken. Why? What for? Can we return the small size at least as an option? I'm aware of the "other apps do it this way" argument, and I'm generally sympathetic, but I don't think it has the priority over the "yuck, it's ugly" argument. That is, when what other apps do looks nice or at least decent, borrow. When our own solution is demonstrably better, stick with it. P.S. The join/cap buttons with thick white midline replaced by thick black midline became even worse. So I went ahead and fixed them using a thin dotted midline.

Replaces LIBS="$LIBS -lgc" with LIBS="$LIBS -lgc -lpthread -ldl" This appears to be wrong. Some systems do not have -lpthread (such as gc built with --disable-threads) and -ldl (such as NetBSD). Hi, Before working on Object manager I decided to give a quick look at "Export bitmap" palette. I can easily imagine plenty of people who would prefer a longer input box for filename. No probs :) Just exchange "Output file:..." label and input box. That's it. 2. I've removed units switcher, because it seems to make no sense as we already have one units switcher in document properties which works everywhere. However it is present on one of first mockups (http://techwriter.nm.ru/mockups/mockup03.png). 3. I've placed a output file size counter label on the form, because it would be a nifty feature for those who does web design in Inkscape --- they always want to know how large the file is :) Besides otherwise there will be either empty space or a too large "Export" button. 4. I might be missing some feature plans for this palette. No probs, again :) I can redesign current mockups to make them fit your plans. Alexandre

Need status on import/export formats for FAQ

I know that (at least in the past) there were formats that were supported on Linux and not on Win32. Proposal for bug fixing for 0.41

We had good results with the point-based system we used for the 0.40 release, and I'd like to propose we do the same for the 0.41 release. We chose to target 150 "points" worth of bug fixes, where low criticality bugs were 3 points, med were 6, and high 9. We had been able to achieve 150 points within a week, so I think that's something we can achieve by the end of the month. The one thing that gives some concern is that I think we have a much larger number of high criticality bugs than we did last time (18). However, I think most them are not _new_ bugs (i.e., they were present in 0.40), so if we can close any proportion of them at all (even a low number), it'd be forward progress. Do we have any "must fix" bugs for the 0.41 release? Does 150 points sound like a good goal for 0.41? Bryce

Since icons can be easily changed via the new theme support, I've restored the z-order, flip, and calligraphic icons to their original state, to maintain the 0.40 look. I think if we're going to _change_ existing icons, it should be subtle (adjustments) or whole-sale (total replacement of everything). I have gone ahead and created an identity on deviantART (http://deviantart.com <http://deviantart.com/> ) for Inkscape (which is http://inkscape.deviantart.com <http://inkscape.deviantart.com/> ). First off, it's plain jane in the moment... but will look snazzier as of tomorrow... I had two things in mind when creating it... 1) I wanted to have an inkscape account where we can have links to peoples inkscape work on DA (essentially a central hub for IS on there) 2) I also wanted a place where we can potentially have people submit artwork/icons etc for the actual inkscape project. (since we apparently now have raw icon theme-ing in place) A limitation on the inkscape group is that for anyone that is involved with administration of it or a "member" of that group, we can not choose to make any of their personal artwork a group favorite. It's a stupid limitation but I can understand the rules... they don't want self-promotion through groups. But this is easy to resolve as it's really more of a communal place to hang out as opposed to a "club" or something (unless that's what people want). For those unfamiliar with DA, it lives up to the name and a significant portion of the work posted there is "devious" by some nature. We will do everything in our power to make the inkscape group as clean as possible and will never link to anything depraved or tasteless as well as most likely not anything containing nudity either. Given the slight potential for that being an issue, I think this is too good of a place to show off inkscape to pass up... given that it's the largest art community on the net. To get the ball rolling, if you are a member of DA and interested in this, please reply on the user-list (or directly to me via email if you prefer) with your DA username or a link to your gallery. My current goal is to have a good assortment of artwork to refer people to when we make the announcement about the next release in a few weeks. If you aren't a member on DA and use inkscape for anything even relatively creative... what are you waiting for? =) I will post a few favorites tonight of inkscape work I've run across on DA so far, so... the page should start looking a bit more interesting this evening. -Josh

Small icons in menus

While the bitmap gtk-stock items renders in 16x16, the icons from icons.svg only renders in 14x14 pixels or smaller. After getting so much positive feedback on the draw tool icons I've created, I set out to redesign some other icons to go with them. The set is far from being complete, but it's a good start, and I still have some leftovers from an older theme I've created, that will allow me to easily go ahead with this theme. I'd be really thrilled if my icons would be included as standard theme. Point is right now I'm Design Coordinator of ESTIEM ("European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management" an Europe-wide organization with abouts 40000 members -- must have mentioned it before). Their publishing and such has so far not been very professional and having worked in PR and layout since a few years (only voluntarily, though) I'm really glad to be able to provide my fellow Designers with a professional tool, that they can legally get for FREE! So while Inkscape's functions are fantastic (ok, there are many, many things that have to improve, but still) I never really liked the icons. They are so grey, that only hardcore Gnome people will like them (don't get me wrong, I'm using Gnome myself!). About the node editing being red (Josh was kinda disturbed by that): I created them to look like the draw icon so that one easily recognizes, what toolbar one is in. Hope you like them! David

repr refactoring

I just did something that should have been done a long time ago -- made all of SPRepr's data fields private. This shouldn't have affected anything, but it turns out a lot of code still was poking at the fields directly. I replaced direct accesses with calls to the appropriate accessors. In the process I moved most of the "real" functionality into SPRepr member functions; the sp_repr_* functions remain as thin wrappers for the moment. For reference: old-style direct access .... becomes: repr->parent repr->parent() or sp_repr_parent(repr) repr->next repr->next() or sp_repr_next(repr) repr->children repr->firstChild() or sp_repr_children() repr->doc repr->document() Long-term, SPRepr will become a public interface (abstract) class in repr.h, the current SPRepr will become SPReprImpl or similar, and the wrapper sp_repr_* functions will become inline, then go away entirely. -mental

1 Some of the icons have blurred fringes at the edges of the square, which happens because another icon is too close in icons.svg and its edge's antialiasing gets into the neighboring icon. Watch out for this. 2 I don't like the thick white "midline" in these icons. What does it represent? Why white? If you want to show the midline axis, just a single solid black stroke, solid or dashed, is enough. The white is too salient and confusing. 3 I also don't like the highlights on the icons. Hey, this is just strokes! They are not supposed to be highlighted or shaded in any way. It's just silly. I have to spend extra milliseconds every time I try to figure out the join shape, dazzled by all the highlights and the white thing in it. 3 The butt cap icon is wrong: the white midline (of whatever this is) must not and can not extend beyond the stroke itself. Never.

calligraphic icon

I have decided I should not interfere with icon work, as I tend to be too critical sometimes. However the newest calligraphic icon on the toolbar is so ugly I wanted to speak up. The idea to replace pencil with a pen is OK, but that pen is too out of sync with the rest of the icons. It seems too heavy and black because of the stroke, thus almost obscuring the calligraphic line it's drawing, and the entire icon looks dirty and noisy. Whoever did it, please try to make it cleaner.

Maybe it's not quite nice to pose this question, but I just need some info to consider my plans. >From April 11th to 16th, the ESTIEM Spring Council Meeting will take place in Lyon, France. As the design coordinator I will be leading a PR working group. While a lot of time will be needed to work on the ESTIEM webpage, esp. it's content, I am thinking about introducing the working group to Inkscape, since so far vectors have badly been neglected for ESTIEM design tasks. Before having many people complain about some lacking functions, I'd like to know, where you think Inkscape will stand at that point of time. Any chance of my main issues being addressed by then? - On canvas text editing, including flowtext - Working ai/ps/eps(/pdf <- that'd be just great!) output, including transparency and gradients - Ability to add a node anywhere on a line -- via right-click - Real clipping paths for images (and svg objects) I'm not saying Inkscape was unusable without these functions. I think it's a wonderful piece of software, as you know, but it takes quite some personal effort to work with it, sometimes. So while I myself use Inkscape for basically everything graphical I'm doing, it will be hard to convince people without this special open source spirit. David

However to my surprise both Batik and Adobe render it without a complaint. What am I missing? I thought that if a file is invalid XML it cannot be valid SVG. Are Batik/Adobe being unduly permissive? What are we supposed to do in this situation?

In order to remove the last of the veto callbacks (the only one used, in only one place), I went ahead and rewrote SPDocument::getObjectByRepr() so it didn't rely on ID lookups, then removed the change attribute veto callback. Two side-effects of this: 1. it is now possible to remove the id attribute from an element This shouldn't cause any problems, as I laid the groundwork for id-less operation a long time ago (this has been planned for a while). Note that objects still get ids by default. 2. manually setting a conflicting id now causes the original object to get a new id, rather than disallowing the change This should always have been at least possible through the XML editor. I'm not as sure about the properties dialog; if we decide it's best to disallow setting a conflicting ID again we can implement a check in the dialog. I think both changes are more in line with user expectations anyway. Test and let me know if I missed any breakage. I tried to be conservative about the change. -mental

Q about Coordinates

So, from tinkering with Inkscape recently I noticed that 0,0 is at the bottom left corner of the document. I was just curious if we're going to change it to the top left corner in the future... mainly, since Bulia had changed the unit stuff to better comply with the standard, I was just wondering if there were plans for this change in the future. Just a Q... no complaints or suggestions. =) -Josh

I've just comitted another tweak whereby non-elements (e.g. text or comment nodes) are no longer assigned IDs. By the way ... I just noticed we're still putting 2004 in the ChangeLog... it's 2005 now, people! ^_- (I went and fixed the dates) -mental

icon calligraphic_draw not displayed

Win 32 2000 Build 15/1/05:1703. While trying unsuccessfully to reproduce bug 1102318 I noticed that the calligraphic icon was not displaying. Start up Inkscape and the error message comes up immediately. The calligraphic tool can still be used but the icon does not appear. I've logged the bug. vellum.

removing veto callbacks

I've been working on the repr code a bit lately, and it's becoming clear to me that the veto callbacks probably aren't such a good idea. 1. they aren't sufficient to implement document validation constraints (which was their original purpose) 2. they would get in the way of some useful multi-step transformations where the end result is valid but the intermediate steps are not 3. they aren't used anyway except in one place (manually setting element IDs) 4. the one place they are used, it would make more sense to accomodate the user's wishes (by re-iding the object whose ID has been taken) than to silently disobey them as we do now 5. they get icky with DOM So I'm working on removing them. -mental

W32 build and Gtk::Socket

Now that Ted has added the #ifdefs (yeah, I hate those, too) to prefsdialog.* the build is working again. Thanks, Ted! The Gtk::Socket docs say that it is implemented with X's XEMBED protocol, which of course will work on neither W32 nor native OSX. Kak zhal! Maybe Mozilla's source tree has a cross-platform way of mounting one process's gui in that of another. Gnome's Corba v.3 way (activation like ActiveX) of doing it is cross-platform, but of course that would lead to infinite dependencies. I couldn't reply to the mail thread here, since this work email account is not receiving all of the messages that my home account does. pixmap replacements

I finally got around to importing Andreas Nilsson's new icons (I tweaked them a little and added some more that I made), and fixing the code to load them. It's great! :) Andreas, can you re-examine the XML editor icons -- I sent some comments about them a while back. I reckon this comes from Inkscape not being listed in the Free Software Directory <http://directory.fsf.org/>. I've just submitted a request to add an entry for Inkscape. I listed Bryce Harrington <you_know_your_email@...643... ;o)> as the maintainer and developer. Since this came up in some thread, that there was a problem about knowing the line height in flowtext, I tried to dig up what ever I could find about it. If I understand correctly, the line-height in SVG is supposed to be defined via the line-height css attribute just like as in html. The property index at http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/propidx.html links to http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/visudet.html#propdef-line-height . I might be getting something totally wrong (probably I am, because I'm not sure, how you could have missed this), but to me it seems, that this is actually, how the line-height is defined for svg as well. I'll do some more research on this, if needed. I'd really like to see flow-text in 0.41, you see. David
