Updating the FAQ with pictures and diagrams

Brynn brought it to attention that the FAQ could use some updating to include pictures and diagrams to help explain. I'm already looking at the Raster vs. Vector sections, but would like to know other hot-button questions (questions which we get a lot) that the FAQ doesn't quite address clearly enough, or possibly could address better with graphics. CMake Address/Memory/Thread/Undefined Sanitizer support

Dear Jabier, as discussed, I tested the Sanitzer builds with Debian 9 - works well. I can now configure 4 sanitizer variants with CMake D Parameters like this: -D SANITIZE_ADDRESS=ON -D SANITIZE_MEMORY=OFF -D SANITIZE_THREAD=OFF -D SANITIZE_UNDEFINED=ON address and undefined can be enabled together, the other two options require separate builds with only one option enabled. When I set export ASAN_OPTIONS=halt_on_error=0 before you start inkscape, it will not stop on errors. Then you get the output in sanitizer-sample-1.txt until inkscape reaches the main screen. It looks all like new/delete mismatches which usually come from forgetting to define a destructor virtual. If I disable these as well with: export ASAN_OPTIONS=new_delete_type_mismatch=0 it is clean until reaching main screen. The second attached file is from shutdown and shows just memory leaks. So chances are not bad that the Sanitizer will be useful for specific issues without a lot of upfront debugging. The detection and configuration of the sanitizers is done by CMake scripts I took from another project (compatible licenses). You get all 4 variants with gcc 6.xx. With earlier variants only the address sanitizer works. The changes to the inkscape CMake files are minimal, all is in separate CMake modules. I will do some more tests on Saturday and do a pull request then, but you can already look at it here: https://gitlab.com/MSoegtrop/inkscape/commits/sanitizer It is just one commit you can easily merge. Funded development thoughts (long)

There's been interest of late in figuring out some options for funding development work on Inkscape. I'm thrilled to hear this as I also think it's an important direction for Inkscape's longer term health, and something I've been working on directly myself for some time now. I promised Martin I'd write a thorough response to his proposal, including the course of action I think we should undertake, which makes for a long read, so I apologize upfront about the length. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First, let me share my thoughts on Patreon and why we should not rely on it for our *project* needs. Patreon looks interesting for individual developers, but for the Inkscape project in general what we really need is a mechanism to direct and focus funds towards the issues our donors, users, and developers care about collectively, and to provide them with a level of accountability that the funds are being put to good use for tangible, predictable benefits. Patreon is undirected, simply providing funding for whatever the recipient wishes to do. It provides no mechanisms for review, guidance, or transparency. Martin suggested advertising placement on the Inkscape website and utilizing trademark legal enforcement as a carrot/stick mechanism to help ensure the recipients are at least working actively on Inkscape. However, website placement is likely going to be contentious since it relies on donors selecting who to fund. They'll either pick the most popular, the guy at the top of the list, the biggest self-promotor, or randomly. We can strive very hard to make it "fair" but with money involved there will always be complaints, and someone feeling that someone else is getting more funding priority than they "deserve". Despite our best of intentions, this feels likely to turn into a can of worms. The use of trademark enforcement is an interesting angle, by restricting who can label themselves as "Inkscape Developers". However, I believe trademark law does not work that way, and even if it did would be difficult to enforce, requiring the involvement of the Conservancy to issue cease-and-desist letters -- I think we'd end up deciding the marginal benefits would not make up for the time, manpower, and stress investments of dealing with abusers flouting our trademark rules. It may work adequately as a gentlemen's agreement, but if someone truly challenges it, I fear our enforcement will be revealed to be a paper tiger. But we needn't overthink it to that level - fundamentally, restricting how other developers define themselves within our community is at odds with our egalitarian principles, and does not respect the development freedom we cherish. If someone wants to refer to themselves as an Inkscape Developer, we should encourage it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fortunately, we can achieve a much better approach by focusing our efforts more intently into the funded projects system already under way. Paid developer work has been long discussed in our project. We've looked at bounty systems, direct patron sponsorship, straight up contracting, and so on, that other projects have experimented with. We approached the Software Conservancy with these ideas and hashed them out into a workable system, after months of discussion and drafting. The essence of the system is straightforward: 1. We post a list of approved jobs, similar to our GSoC lists. 2. Money from donations can be directed towards jobs the donors want to see done. Small donations can be aggregated together to provide big funding for larger efforts. 3. We carefully vet developers who wish to take jobs, similar to how we vet GSoC students, but also judge their past work, history of Inkscape involvement, etc. 4. Vetted developers can take approved jobs when the funding level reaches the amount they feel is appropriate to the work, by sending in a Job Proposal (similar to GSoC), that we review and accept. 5. Developers are required to post monthly reports, just like GSoC. Each job also defines an expected time limit, like with GSoC. 6. On job completion, a Reviewer checks that the requirements were met, and the payment is cut. The process is strongly modeled after Google Summer of Code, which has been proven effective for us historically. It builds in several checkpoints to ensure bad actors don't enter the system, and to ensure accountability and transparency into the development work. It also empowers and leverage donors to influence where their money gets invested, both to give them a level of ownership and to use their donation decisions as "crowd wisdom" to ensure we're putting money where it will most benefit the Inkscape community's needs. One important distinction from GSoC is that jobs don't need to be fixed sized to fit 3-month summer schedules. This system should work for quick turn-around 1-2 week projects, up to multi-month or even year-long efforts. Whatever we need. It also doesn't have to be feature work, but could target bug fixing, website work, documentation. Whatever we need. A final benefit - this system's already been reviewed and approved by Software Conservancy's lawyers. So, while there might be some bumps along the way, there is no reason we can't start using it immediately. What I have been working on myself is Django-based software that would enable us to scale the system up to handle a multitude of project ideas, track jobs in various states of completion, and coordiate work by arbitrary numbers of developers, vetters, and reviewers. It aims to also directly hook the donation system into the project listings so a donor has instant feedback of the effect of their funds. This is complex, as you can imagine, and with my time being in short supply it's been slow going. However, for small scale needs the software is superfluous, we can do all the same steps manually, tracking status in a google spreadsheet or whatever. And for the near term, I think we should. Here's what we'd need to do: * Designate several people to defined roles: 1. Fundraising coordinator. 2. Vetter (must be a board member) 3. Reviewer * Add more Job definitions. + For each Job we define Completion Criteria + Board can vote to make certain of them immediately fundable. * Organize an online fundraiser. + Set up is just as we've done for hackfest fundraising, but with a detailed list of what Jobs are specifically being funded. + Donated funds are distributed equally to the specific Jobs we list. + Board can vote to assign Inkscape funds, too. * Recruit developers to participate + We already know of several (Mc, Tav); put out a call for more + Vetter will receive job proposals and review applicants, check that they've been actively contributing, and look able to complete assigned work, have provided payment details, etc. + Once vetter gives OK on a given job proposal, work can begin immediately When the work is done, the Reviewer reviews it, and I notify Conservancy to cut a check or wire transfer to the person that did it. This system is set up to make payments after completion, rather than reliably regular monthly payments, and I know that will be an issue for people needing predictable income for covering monthly rent and so on. One way we can hack around that is instead of defining one big 3-month job, to break it up into three 1-month (160 hr, $2000+) jobs assigned to them that they perform sequentially. This will require more reviewer involvement, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. For all of this to work, though, I would need to recruit a number of you to help out in various roles. I don't think these roles will be time consuming, but you'd need to commit to being available regularly as stuff comes up. How does this plan sound in concept? Bryce

x86 MSI installer detected as a malware

Hi. Since 0.92.2, a few antivirus programs detects the x86 MSI installer as a malware (Avast, Sophos and AVG see the Other:Malware-gen signature). See https://www.virustotal.com/#/file/665507b85422f25350736b8b47a50931521bc7e2b… for details The x64 MSI is not affected. This is most likely a false positive, but as the file is quite big, I cannot submit it to Avast as such for example. Anyway, I think you might be interested in knowing this. Dear Lex, yes, in case there is a large distance, the TSP solver makes a jump. My machine can actually do jumps (knot the threads and cut them at both ends), so my main goal is to optimize the number of jumps. What one should do is try to order the groups such that connections can be hidden below other stitching, but this is complicated, especially when you don't have the concept of an area (my stuff just works on open paths). Hi James, I can't solve your direct problem, but I can offer an alternative, inkscape-silhouette: https://github.com/fablabnbg/inkscape-silhouette It's an inkscape extension that can directly control a silhouette cutter without the need to use Silhouette's proprietary software. Unless I'm mistaken as to your intent, I think this will allow you to not only master in SVG, but in fact work _only_ in SVG. As a bonus, inkscape-silhouette gives me much more control than the free version of Silhouette Studio. Wow, your paper toys are amazing! I've been doing stuff in a similar (though far less polished) vein using my Portrait to cut polygons that my children can fit together into polyhedra. Hi Michael, Sorry for the delay! I didn't even know there was an embroidery LPE. I don't see it in 0.92.1... how can I test it out? The extension that Susan was referring to is here: https://github.com/lexelby/inkscape-embroidery It started off as a little project by jonh, and then it migrated to github, and then I forked it and hacked the heck out of it. I've rewritten most of the major sections at this point. For exporting, I'd recommend you examine embroidermodder2. That project seems to be mostly abandoned at this point, but it does have a nice little library that understands all major (and many minor) embroidery machine file formats. You may even be able to get it to convert directly from an SVG to a .PES file, for example. I included some details on this in my README. The math problem I'm having has to do with fill stitching. The general problem is: how do I fill a generic shape with rows of stitches? The specific parameters are: 1) Stitch back and forth (like mowing a lawn). 2) Don't cut the thread. 3) Don't sew over the same section twice. 4) Don't do running stitch over the top of areas you've already done rows of stiches on. 5) Line all the stitches up to make a visually pleasing pattern. I have an implementation already, described here: https://github.com/lexelby/inkscape-embroidery#autofill This works pretty well. Give it a region and it will break it up into sections (each of which by itself can be filled all in one go). To get between sections, it runs around the outline of the shape. The idea here is that usually, one will do satin stitch around the outside of a fill region, covering up the running stitches. As described in the README, the problem is when you give it a region with holes in it. Things get very complicated, and I have yet to come up with an algorithm that a) can reliably fill all regions without getting "stuck" with nowhere to go, and b) doesn't take forever to run. Right now, my hacky workaround is to convert a region with holes into one without holes by cutting a very small rectangular section out of the shape (see the README). This works, but it's not ideal and it requires a lot of extra effort on the part of the user. The ideal solution would somehow figure out an ordering for embroidering the sections, such that every section gets filled in but none of the rules above are violated. Bonus points if it can avoid running around the outside of the shape to get between sections. It would instead run through the middle of regions of the shape that have not yet been filled in, so that the running stitch gets hidden by the rows of stitches that are filled in later. The biggest problems I have yet to wrap my head around are: 1) How to avoid getting into recursive/NP-complete hell. Taking more than 10-20 seconds would really be a bad user experience; 2-3 seconds max is really what I'm aiming for. 2) How to figure out how to get from point A to point B inside a closed polygon, running over only sections that haven't been filled in yet. 2 is especially hard for me, and I think it's the kind of thing that inkscape devs probably already know how to do! I really don't understand how I can do pathfinding in an arbitrarily complex shape like that without writing thousands of lines of code. I know this kind of algorithm is possible. Commercial embroidery design software makes this look easy. I want to bring that to the open source world. I haven't been able to find any discussion of this kind of algorithm with repeated and creative googling. The closest I can think of is lawn-mowing algorithms, about which I found one paper that is unfortunately a bit beyond my level of math understanding. Hi! Sorry for going dark there -- everyday life intrudes fairly often. Neato, and thanks for the explanation! It does indeed look like your stuff follows a similar method to inkscape-embroidery. A few minor differences: * The extension handles creating a "grating" of lines automatically and intersects them with the fill region using Shapely (a Python extension). * The fill pattern is handled automatically through the insertion of extra nodes as you mentioned. Currently there's only one pattern: a sort of stair-step/staggered pattern that is visually pleasing. I cribbed it off of a pattern I bought online that was made using a commercial embroidery design program. I'd love to understand how to code more complex patterns, but I haven't given much thought to it yet. * The extension used to have a TSP solver of its own, but it really didn't do a particularly good job. I started off trying to fix bugs and ultimately just ripped it out. Instead, I carefully order paths in Inkscape. The new Objects panel is key for this, and it's a hugely awesome addition to Inkscape! The only part I struggle with is that Inkscape doesn't want to let you reorder objects relative to each other if they don't intersect (or nearly intersect). Ultimately, the problem I brought up for discussion boils down to the same problem you're solving with the your TSP algorithm. *Question: *what does your code do if it needs to get from one section to another that is distant? Does it just jump-stitch? SVG in 92 and Phyisical Scale

Hi Inkscape Devs! I’ve used Inkscape for about five years now and have built up quite the library of svg files and have been using 91 since its release. My main creative effort is to build paper toys that I print and cut (in bulk) on a Silhouette Portrait cutting machine. (More info on my works at http://netroids.net ). I have a 100s of files and hoped to use them as my long term "masters” given that SVG is not proprietary and has had such great page layout fidelity for me. I’d love to update to v92 and future versions but, as is commonly known, the svg save logic has changed to support a new CSS standard of 96dpi and it is affecting my ability to import into my cutting software. It seems that perhaps the values written by Inkscape in 91 svg files are encoded using a 90dpi scale from their original design-time dimensions. In the past I’ve had much success importing SVGs from Inkscape 91 into Silhouette studio for years. (Granted, I do perform a little cleansing in a copy of the master svg before I go to Silhouette: I simplify the layers, ungroup, and flatten out clones into their own objects. Perhaps it is just serendipity that the Silhouette Studio imports SVGs at the 90dpi. (I tried asking them about dpi but I couldn’t "break through" their first-tier help desk support "fire wall".) I know there’s an import prompt and process for opening 91 files in 92 and I have participated in the launchpad forum and chat with Mc about this topic. (my user name is jimbox13). Unfortunate for me, none of the prompts give a workable solution. Here’s what happens to my files based on each option. (I used a diff tool in to investigate some of the changes.) * "Accuracy for sizes and position of paths" (Desired option) * Grid and guides appear to be changed – though I’m not sure to what extent. * Rectangles, paths and strokes are sized up by 6.667% * Inkscape Designer Outcome: shapes and sizes correct right based on the page. :) (bug #1712114 occurs.) * Cutter Software Outcome: File is too large (by 6.667%) for cutting area. :( * "Digital Art" * Grid and guides changed to some degree. * Rectangles and paths not changed. * Inkscape Designer Outcome: shapes and sizes are too small for the page :( * Cutter Software Outcome: shapes and sizes are correct :) * "Accuracy for masks and clips" * Grid and guides changed to some degree. * Rectangles, paths and strokes are changed to some degree, not the same as above. * Inkscape Designer Outcome: shapes and sizes correct right based on the page. :) (bug #1712114 does not occur.) * Cutter Software Outcome: File is significantly too small for cutting area. :( None of these options produce a svg that maintains its correct physical dimensions across both software packages. Hi Friends, There's a recent new upload to the gallery, which appears to be instructions for using a website which helps people create their own logos, for a price. I can't see that it has anything to do with Inkscape (except in its PDF, it recommends using Inkscape to edit the logos). They could be considering the phrase in the CoC "made to be used with Inkscape" wrongly. But I'm not sure. (copying to the devel list, re CoC) I'm just looking for some other opinions about this, whether it should remain in the gallery at all, or remain under a different category. Personally, I think it's spam. But since I tend to be rather ruthless about spam, I thought I should ask for other opinions. Does anyone see any relationship to Inkscape here? Thanks, brynn

Not as awesome as....?

Hi Friends, I happened to be looking through the Release Notes which now appear on the website, under each of the versions of Inkscape which are available for download. I noticed for some of the 0.48.x versions, under Known Issues, it says "Not as awesome as 0.91" For 0.48.3.1 it says "not as awesome as 0.49" which might be a clue these items were added around the time the decision was made to jump from 0.48 to 0.91. So apparently this was done on the wiki, and just made the transfer to the website recently. That doesn't sound especially professional to me. It sounds like a joke actually. Especially when there are no other known issues listed! (https://inkscape.org/en/release/0.48/?latest=1) If it's supposed to be some kind of motivation to upgrade, I think there probably is a more professional way to do it. I mean, it's not even a release note, since 0.91 was not made when 0.48.x was released. For goodness sakes! But I really think it should be removed. Or at the very least, re-worded. Is there some reason for that, which I haven't imagined yet? All best, brynn PS - I'd offer to delete them, except I don't appear to have access to those pages. Also, the about screen is not showing on the download pages for versions earlier than 0.48.5. Shall I make an Issue report? Or is someone currently working on it?

Measure line LPE improvemets

Hi all. Following a CR conversation about "Measure Line LPE" and the unmanegable/slow to add a LPE for each segment. I do a mayor update to it. ALso rename it to "Measure Segments LPE" The previous LPE is not abailable now, so convert to paths previous works with it before update to trunk, sorry. Features: When apply to a path (can have subpaths) the full path is meassured. You can remove or add a partial segment measure by a blaclist/whitelist implemented. Before you can add another LPE to fill the removed segments with diferent params measuraments. By this way i do also a method to not cross measures with angle greater than "Fix Crossings º" parameter. I hope now is much more easy to use. Best regards, Jabier.

It doesn't seem to work, or I'm not sure how to get it right, but I'm sure you put .icc profile under new folder in Inkscape directory under share/color/icc, and Inkscape should be able to detect them, but from my end, it does not seem to work. Also, would it be possible to hide tabs in the color sections, and force Inkscape to stick with CMS? Is there some limitations to CMS that I'm not aware of? Does filters offset color informations? inkscape root dir tidying thoughts

With the cmake and git conversions complete, and autotools and bzr bits removed, I am wondering if there's some additional cleanup of stuff accumulated in our repository's root directory. But much of this I'm not 100% sure about (and that maybe why others haven't already dealt with it). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + distro + libgc.supp + tools-version.sh I think these may be obsolete. They've been in the codebase forever, but I don't know what they are used for anymore. I'm guessing they're autotools leftovers; can we drop them? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + inkscape.ico + inkscape.png The share/icons/application/ directory is the formal place for our icons, with share/branding/ the official source for branding files. Only the windows packaging refers to inkscape.ico. So I think this could be moved to packaging/. Or perhaps windows could be changed to use the .png files like everything else? Doxyfile seems to reference inkscape.png but I believe it could as easily use one of the icons in share/icons/application/, but see below... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + Doxyfile This doxygen config file works fine (just ran it). As an aside, I know we eliminated Perl from the build system, but it's still used for the man page generation (the 'p' in pod stands for perl). I like the POD format, but raw man page syntax (TROFF) isn't *that* complicated; if we wanted, we could just keep all the man pages as troff, eliminate pod usage, and simplify our build requirements. (Compare inkview.1.in with man/inkview.pod.in to see the difference). As detailed in the COPYING file, the only reason we have GPL3.txt is because there's a few files in our tree copied from GIMP. The LGPL2.1 isn't a problem, but according to COPYING it's only there due to some libs we copied into the tree (I see libavoid is LGPL, is there anything else?) If the LGPL libs were changed to be external dependencies instead of copied into src, we could eliminate the LGPL2.1.txt file too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + CMakeLists.txt + CMakeScripts/ + cmake_uninstall.cmake.in + config.h.cmake CMake is nice and concise compared to autotools. I vaguely remember kk discussing it a while back. Is anyone still using it? I see we already have the options documented at https://inkscape.org/en/develop/coding-style/ including directions for how to store the settings locally in ~/.astylerc. If no one is actively using this tool, that might be a better solution and remove astylerc from the codebase. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + _clang-format I'm not sure why this is in the tree. Guessing it was a jenkins-related thing? I suspect we can drop this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + setup/ This appears to be current, but what is it? It has a single subdir with a single file, which looks like a copy of inkscape.desktop.in with translations embedded. Why is this in a directory called 'setup'? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ + ChangeLog With the newest entry in this file being from 2014, this looks vestigal. I think it used to be needed for packaging, and I think it dates to pre-bzr. Correct download URL for source ?

When I downloaded 0.92.2 using firefox, I thought that the link was to https://inkscape.org/en/release/0.92.2/source/archive/dl/bz2/ (but I might have misread the tiny text), and presumably it had inkscape-0.92.2.tar.bz2 on the end of it. But now that I try to go there directly I get inkscape's Page Not Found, and using that to search for inkscape-0.92.2.tar.bz2 fails. I see that Arch seem to be using https://media.inkscape.org/dl/resources/file/inkscape-0.92.2.tar.bz2 but that too fails for me with 404, or 403 for the directories above that. So, please, where should I point people to so that they can download it with a browser or wget ? ĸen -- I live in a city. I know sparrows from starlings. Download Page Redirect Issue?

Can someone confirm that they're having similar behaviors: When I visit inkscape.org I am properly assigned my language (/en/), when I hover over the download link it shows the proper URL (https://inkscape.org/en/release/), but when I click the link I am redirected to the French language version of the page (https://inkscape.org/fr/release/0.92.2/). I've tested in three browsers, it's not a local caching issue as far as I can tell. Seems like a serverside page caching issue to me, or maybe a simple redirect typo. Just want to see if I'm the only one.

I have some experience with creating build systems which use specific package versions based on Cygwin. Since there is a working MSys build, it shouldn't be difficult to build with specific package versions - one just has to create a local cygwin or MSys package repository, which keeps these specific versions and tell the Cygwin/MSys installer to use that one. The Cygwin installer creates a suitable repository as a cache automatically. Not sure how this works with MSys, but I guess it has similar features. The main issue here might be to get the versions mentioned in the Wiki. One might have to build them from scratch. If someone has a years old cache folder of Cygwin or MSys with all the old package versions, please put is somewhere. It would make sense to run two builds, one with the latest packages and one with an archived set of packages. Best regards, Michael .

Dear developers, We've just concluded our board meeting and one of the issues was funding. We're kicking around an idea of allowing some developers to use the service Patreon (http://patreon.com/) to collect subscriptions to fund their Inkscape development. This system of funding would be quite different from either a centralised funding model or the status quo of non-user involvement. These are some very raw thoughts for considering and I'd love to get more feedback from the wider developer community: * Developers would be allowed to create a Patreon page which describes their work on Inkscape. * Each developer would be shaping their focuses and would be responsible to keeping their Patreon pages up to date. * Developers may only define themselves as Inkscape developers on patreon if: . + They are Inkscape developers (in the list of devs) . + Are considered active in the project. . + Present Inkscape in a good light on their pages. . + Have asked for permission from the developers list. * Developers would be removed from the scheme by the developers if . + They are not active in the project for 2 months . + Are involved in an conduct infraction which gets them removed from the project. * People claiming to be Inkscape developers without permission will be considered to be using the Inkscape trademark inappropriately. (must check legal with Conservancy to make sure this is true) * The Inkscape general fund continues to be the donation headline, money going towards hackfests and other resources for the project. * The project would do periodic funding drives to improve donations and subscriptions to our patreon developers. Using social media and news announcements to improve funding. * Contributors to patreon developers would NOT receive sponsorship rewards from Inkscape (i.e. sponsorship levels on the website). * Patreon developers would continue to get sponsorship for hackfest expenses much like any other developer would. == Status == We have two developers who are prepared to trial such a system. Tav and Mc (Marc), both attended the hackfest, both have worked on Inkscape intensively for quite a while. I want to see if it's possible try and get a trial set up quickly. Inkscape .deb package

Our PPA to do autobuilds of releases broke with the switch from bzr to git; I tried coaxing it back to life but no go so far. Hi Friends, I had started a thread a little over a year ago now. The question was, would it be possible for the mouse pointer (holding or dragging nothing, just by itself) to snap to something like nodes. Because selecting a number of individual nodes, in a situation where dragging a selection box wouldn't work, I was thinking if the mouse pointer (Node tool) could snap to nodes, it would make it much faster to select them individually. https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/message/35137850 So there was a long discussion, and some people actually came up with some functionality using a key combination (I think Shift + something, iirc). So when the mouse pointer was within some distance of a node, pressing the key combination selected that node. But the whole thing kind of died when it turned out the only available key was on the right side of the keyboard, which would be awkward for me (probably most right-handers). But I see in the draft for the release announcement, for 0.92.2, that some more keys have been freed up for user-defined shortcuts, which were not available before. So it got me thinking, and I wonder what those keys are, and whether it would bring this idea back to life. Thanks for comments :-) All best, brynn

cmake fails: unsupported Mingw

Bad result from cmake .. command: Unable to determine MinGW processor architecture. Are you using an unsupported MinGW version? I put MinGW exactly where it's needed - in C:\ and without whitespace characters. How do I fix this? There's nothing on Google that will explain it. I'm using the normal MinGW, not a legacy version or beta.

Dear Lex, I guess we are trying to solve the same problem, but differently. I wanted to have more control than semi automated fillers provide, so I added 3 LPEs, which are in Inkscape 0.92.2: 1.) A bool LPE to do intersections / unions, ... of areas, so that one can construct the areas to stitch from drawing areas. 2.) A path / path group trimmer LPE, which restricts a set of paths to an area (or oustide of an area. There are already two path interpolation LPEs which allow to create sets of paths with fine control over local direction and density. 3.) An LPE to convert a set of paths into stitches. This includes an almost reasonable traveling salesman problem (TSP) variant solver for ordering groups of stitches to minimize the traveling in between. It can still be improved. It is a bit more complicated than standard TSP solvers, because it looks into groups of parallel stitches which have 4 possible ends. My approach is as follows 1.) Make a drawing 2.) Use the bool op LPE to create (in a new layer) the areas to fill with each color / stitch style. 3.) Create a set of path to control density and direction using path interpolation LPEs. This allows a great deal of control, e.g. for hair. I don't think any commercial tool allows this amount of control. 4.) Use the path trim/cut LPE to trim the paths created in 3.) to the areas created in 2.) 5.) Use the embroidery stitch LPE to convert the paths to stitches. Sometimes I use the cut / trim filter also to create intermediate nodes in paths to create special stitching patterns. These nodes are not visible in normal drawing, but after stitching they are visible. Of cause for simple cases, it would help to extend it with a more automated approach, which is what you appear to be working at. I am very interested in the import/export library you mentioned. Dear Developers and Users, I have been working with Tim Jones to develop some new icons for the website. I wanted the icons to have a theme and to carry a bit of identity for the teams they represent. So we went with hats. Firstly I want to thank Tim, because they have been awesome to work with and very productive with the brief. I highly recommend. I approached Tim because he'd produced a piece of artwork with Inkscape and submitted it to our website (inkscape.org). The way we can host a small portion of our user's work on the website, is really something great for our community. Firstly because it shows us what great things can be done with the software, but also because it humbles us developers to know that our code is helping make such amazing work. Getting new collaborators into a project is hard. Getting non- programmer contributions is harder still. But the way our website can highlight non-developer aspects of our community; gifts us an opportunity to expand the reaches of the contributing population, to bring in new people and help them contribute in whatever small way they can. Hope we didn't do the same thing. Any discussions on the topic are welcome. What is the math issue? My next plan is to write an export filter in some documented and common import format for stitching machines. Suggestions on the format are welcome. The first (and hopefully only) pre-release package for the upcoming 0.92.2 release is now available: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=inkscape-package/0922pre0/ The 0.92.x branch should now be considered in Hard Freeze + String Freeze. Code changes to the 0.92.2 branch should be sent to me for review and landing (see below.) Translations can be landed normally up to the 4th of Aug. --- I intended to get this released last weekend, but the dist process has changed significantly with the git migration and needed a bit of TLC. suv, liam, Eduard, QuLogic, and others have provided much advice and assistance getting things adapted - thank you. Specifically, we're moved from using `bzr export` to `git archive` for producing the dists. In theory this should be an equivalent move, but please keep your eyes peeled for any missing files or release-specific details that failed to get updated. While there are more enhancements that could be done(*) to streamline the dist code, in the interest of stability, predictability, and expediency I'm going to postpone those to after the release. The dist modifications also need ported to trunk. If anyone's interested in doing this let me know and I'll explain how it should be done, otherwise I'll try to get it taken care of later. The release will be in approximately 2 weeks. I'm thinking a release coordination meeting following the upcoming board meeting may make sense; I'll send an invite later. At this time, despite my delay getting pre0 out, I think the schedule outlined below can still be achieved; contact me if you know of any factors that need to be taken into account. But there was a need from artists to continue the project and not let it die. From Artists came the continuation of the software, many many years after the original developer had stopped working on it. It was only possible to do this because Inkscape is Free Software. Meaning it gives you, the artist, the user, the unequivocal right to own in a fundamental fashion the software tool that you use. If you want to take Inkscape's code, and move it in a different direction, you can. Ponyscape did. If you want to continue the project on past the life of the developers currently working on it, you have that freedom. Either through developing your own code, or by hiring people to work on it for you. The big point here is that Inkscape will never die. So long as there is an Artist that wants to draw or an engineer that wants to cut designs. There will be an Inkscape project. It can not be killed by a corporation, it can't be killed by the copyright holders, you and your friends can continue the project no matter what authority says. It would be best if Microsoft granted the same Freedoms to their users, that we do to ours. The Free Software ideal is that users should always have these Freedoms, but for now we will have to recreate and reinvent proprietary software each time it's discontinued and encourage users to ALWAYS demand that the software they use grant freedom to them. previously, according to the instructions at: https://inkscape.org/en/develop/getting-started/#building-inkscape-windows I would execute the commands: md build cd build cmake -G "MinGW Makefiles" .. mingw32-make -j 2 mingw32-make install Now it appears that the command 'mingw32-make -j 2' is redundant, and all that is needed is the sequence: md build cd build cmake -G "MinGW Makefiles" .. mingw32-make install I found this out by accident while trying to compile the 0.92.x branch revision 84f9b04a from July 24 on Windows XP using devlibs and cmake. All the source code got compiled twice using the original set of commands. When I deleted the build directory and removed the redundant make command, it compiled normally. The same appears to be true in trunk as well. Debian 8 compatibility falling apart after one month of Debian 9

Dear Inkscape Team, I wanted to start a general discussion on compatibility. I um using Debian 8. Ok maybe I shouldn't since Debian 9 is out since a month (June 17th, 2017), but I still like it. My problem is that in the last week quite a few changes came in, which are not compatible with Debian 8: - Requirement for CMake 3.2+ (Debian 8 has 3.0.2) specific syntax of add_custom_target - Requirement for GTK 3.16 (Debian 8 has 3,14) use of gtk_label_set_xalign - Requirement for some rather late libg++ using isinf without :: or std:: qualifier See https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=48891 Not sure which version introduced the fix, but Debian 8 doesn't have it. The first two are just build issues, but the GTK issue will result in binary incompatibilities. I just did an update to master after a week and now sitting here since two hours to get it build again (there were some additional dependencies added last week which are ok in Debian 8 but still required installing the packages). The build stopped now at 59%, not sure how much is still ahead. Is this wanted that compatibility with the previous version of Debian breaks after one month? On what kind of system do the CI tests run? Ubuntu 16.04? Best regards, Michael

Ok, I am giving up now. The next issue is the change of "create_popup_menu" in "filter-effects-dialog.cpp". There is no easy way to patch this for GTK 3.14, because there Gtk::Menu::Menu(const Gtk::Menu&) is private. Since there are no GTK backports in Debian 8, I have to update to Debian 9 to build inkscape. Not nice :-( Best regards, Michael

Change introduced last week requires a newer CMake version than specified - what should the minimum CMake version be set to?

Dear Inkscape Team, I found that since a change introduced a week ago the inkscape CMake files are incompatible with the CMake version which comes with Debian 8, which is 3.0.2. Ok I should update to 9 ;-) A question: the inkscape main CMake file mentions minimum version 2.8.2, which definitely does not work. 3.0.2 also does not work. CMake Version 3.6.2 does work. According to some googled hints the specific constructs introducing the incompatibility require at least CMake 3.2. My question: what should I set the minimum version to? 3.6.2 since I tested it with it? Or should I be more relaxed? What is the minimum version of CMake people are actually using successfully? Or should the change which introduced the incompatibility with Debian 8 be modified so that it works with older versions of CMake, e.g. 3.0.2? Best regards, Michael

Inkscape freezing while adding grid.

Hi, Please excuse my bad English. I have a problem with Inkscape since commit d6f2d85a (jemalloc cmake module) When I add a grid in Inkscape (Document properties/Grids/New), inkscape freeze and I must kill it. I’m under Arch Linux with jemalloc 5.0.1. If i compile without jemalloc or with version 4.5.0, there is no freeze. I reproduced the problem with openSuse tumbleweed but not with openSuse 42.1 and Ubuntu 17.04. With debugger, I found that Inkscape freeze in method DocumentProperties::update_gridspage(), line 1291: _grids_notebook.remove_page(-1); and that it's related to RegisteredColorPicker widgets used in method newSpecificWidget() of classes CanvasXYGrid and CanvasAxonomGrid. When i comment the code wich pack these widgets, there is no freeze. Unfortunately, I did not succeed to go further with debugger (I get stuck with a call to g_object_unref). I rewrite the code which manage grid properties without using Gtk:Manage and there is no freeze. I will clean my code and do a merge request. If anyone want to look at this problem, there is maybe a better solution. Best regards, Christophe

gallery moderation, fan art, and copyright

Hi Friends, Another moderation question has come up (mostly just for me), which is about how we want to define "fan art". Most (if not all) of the moderators think fan art should be allowed in the gallery. But I think it might be a good idea to have some parameters about it, and so I'm hoping the community can offer their thoughts about it. For a starting point and example, I'm totally ok with the Wikipedia defintion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_art) : "Fan art, or fanart, are artworks created by fans of a work of fiction (generally visual media such as comics, film, television shows, or video games) and derived from a series character or other aspect of that work." Does anyone think it should be expanded or restricted in scope, from there? Or should the description be more or less detailed or specific? A separate but related question is whether we want to bother with copyright issues, or leave it up to the license holder whether they want the image removed. For example, if someone reproduces a Pepsi or Coke logo. Or I remember a popular AI tutorial a few years ago, about how to draw the Chevy logo, which I always wondered whether it was a copyright violation. Those don't particularly seem to be fan art, at least not by the wikipedia definition....unless maybe television commercials are considered fiction. Martin says there is a concept within the DMCA and EUCD known as "safe harbor" which protects small websites from being responsible if its members post a copyrighted image. At least that's my understanding, based on the research I did about it. I might not have paraphrased it technically correctly. So should we go with the "it's not our job /we're not lawyers" position? Or should we be a little bit pro-active for blatant copyright issues. If we want to be a little bit proactive, I'm thinking we should also set some parameters about that. Or at least clearly state our policy. Fyi, this is what the current CoC says about it "Art must be your own original creation or derived from artwork available under an open licence. We cannot accept submissions that infringe copyrights." Personally, since Inkscape is an artist's tool (among many other uses), I think the community should be a little proactive about protecting copyrights and/or licenses. But I also think that if it requires a long and complex discussion, or detailed changes to the CoC, then falling back to "it's not our job" might be reasonable. But if that's the case, then the CoC isn't properly stating our position, and perhaps should be edited. Thanks for any thoughts or comments you might have about these things. All best, brynn

Dear Jabier & Inkscape Team, I think the Bool LPE updates are ready to merge. I already created a merge request a while ago (MSoegtrop:lpe-bool-hide-operand). The changes are: - split bool LPE into bool LPE and cut/trim path LPE - automatically hide/unhide operand paths - issue error message if operand paths have wrong type (open/closed) - LPE works directly on any object for "this" and operand. Hello Wiki-Team, I think I found something that would help future Users like me, and thus should be mentioned in the wiki: (I'm a Beginner, first time Inkscape for an Uni-Project), For a printing-service, I needed the CMYK-Colorformat. (In an PDF). But the recommended Extension ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ExportPDFCMYK <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ExportPDFCMYK> ) didn't work for me. (There was an Error during the Exporting). However, following process worked for me: 1. Export to PDF via the normal Export-Function. (Result is a Cairo-PDF in RGB-Colors) 2. Proposed idea for an interim trunk release

After 0.92.2 is completed, I've been thinking about doing a development release of trunk, to help us build towards 0.93. Something a bit more than just a nightly snapshot, but far less than even an alpha release. Call it an "unrelease" or just a "blessed snapshot". Here's my reasoning for why I think this would be worth doing: a. Our alphas get decent testing, but there's not time for the necessary bug fixing, since we're anxious to get the actual release out. This interim release would stimulate testing and bug fixing independent of any such pressure. b. Moving to gitlab, cmake, and gtk3 has changed a LOT structurally. Doing a "practice release" would help find remaining problems with these transitions. c. Despite all the great work done setting up CI's, automated builds, and rolling packaging systems, many advanced users want a fully usable, QA'd build before they'll look at our work. Lesson learned from last release is that we really need these kinds of users' input on our features before we finalize stuff. d. For the rest of us Inkscapers, it will provide a focal point for our near term development, testing, documentation, and refactoring work. But one that won't need all the rigor that a regular release would have - no about screen contests, overly long feature freeze periods, string freezes, worrying over release-blocker bugs, or needing to polish up release notes and other docs. Procedurally: * A soft feature freeze for a week or two, max * No more than one pre-release (if even that) * Translations encouraged, but no string freeze * Packaging needed for all platforms * Packages available from website, but not linked prominently * Lite marketing - basically just target to advanced users * Is clearly marked UNSTABLE and UNSUPPORTED Some other crazy ideas to consider, that might help prevent it from becoming a support burden: + Annoying popup dialog declaring it so at run time? + No guarantee of file format compatibility? + Limited period for accepting bugs reports? + Expiring binary refuses to run after a certain date? + Advise distros to NOT distribute it? Hackfest regressions

Hi all, first of all I'd like to thank everybody for their contributions during the hackfest! As with all new code I noticed some regressions. As you probably know best on what parts of the code you worked yourselves I'll just list everything I noticed here, so you know about it and can attempt to fix it. (If I need to file a bug for any of those please let me know, but I hope most of those issues can be fixed easily): 1. The Inkscape Window is not restored to the correct position anymore (probably related to https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/commit/fa8a2ee7e2539b145a87ac9af0d9748…). On a multi-monitor system with two monitors oriented like [1][2] with [2] being the primary monitor the Inkscape window is restored somewhere on [1] if it was closed on [2], so probably the combined screen area is not accounted for when calculating positions. 2. Some icons are broken or missing, see https://inkscape.org/de/gallery/item/11147/broken_icons.zip (there might be others, but those are the ones I noticed). 3. During the hackfest menu icons were re-added. However on Windows I was only able to find them in a single location (the path menu). Aren't there supposed to be more icons? Also they look a bit weird (see https://media.inkscape.org/media/resources/file/menu_icons.png): Instead of using the space to the left they are indented like the rest of the text shifting menu labels unnecessarily to the right resulting in a very uneven look. Update (merge request) for bool LPE

Dear Inkscape Team, I did a merge request for an updated bool LPE. See the merge request comments. What I still need is a method to check if a PathVector is closed or open. I want to issue an error message if the operands are not as expected, but I couldn't find a way to do this. Jabier wrote that there is some isClosed() function, but I couldn't find anything around a PathVector. Any help with this is appreciated. Best regards, Michael

GitLab Subgroup

Over the past couple weeks I've been exploring the best location(s) to organize the Inkscape outreach and marketing team (a.k.a. Vectors). The team will need some access to GitLab in any regard for storing collateral, however the Issue Board <https://about.gitlab.com/features/issueboard/> could be an excellent project management and communication area in its own right. In order to explore that option I would like to create a "vectors" subgroup. I've already requested access, but I'm not sure who manages that and could grant my account sufficient permissions to manage that subgroup and perhaps create additional subgroups within the vector subgroup. How to propose patches

I created a patch to improve the selection toolbar. It creates two new pull-downs. One determines whether the "X" coordinate refers to the left of the selection (as normal), or the center, or the right; and whether changing the width keeps the left, center, or right edge in place. The second does the analogous function for "Y". Several years ago, I had write access to the inkscape archives, but no more. ClipboardManagerImpl::getFirstObjectID restricted to very few object types

Dear Inkscape Team, I try to make my bool LPE work with any objects, not just paths. I got around most issues (like getting a PathVector from an SPItem), but I am lost with ClipboardManagerImpl::getFirstObjectID which is used by OriginalItemParam. It is restricted to very few object types (g,path,use,text,image,rect). Since the clipboard is used to set the operand path of the LPE, it is restricted to these types. Is there a good reason for this restriction or is this a bug / non feature? What would be an appropriate SVG tag list? This function seems to be used only in very few places, so I guess it wouldn't do a lot of harm to fix it? Would there be a better implementation than checking for a list of literal SVG types? Btw.: Is the LPE parameter type OriginalItemParam / ItemParam operational or is this beta code I shouldn't use? Best regards, Michael

For purposes of bug tracking it would be very helpful to be able to report a rev number that was chronologically ordered. Are there any plans to do so, or am I missing something really obvious here? How to show a warning message?

Dear Inkscape Team, I wonder how to show a warning message. I thought this should work: if (SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP && SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP->messageStack()) { SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP->messageStack()->flash(Inkscape::WARNING_MESSAGE, "my text"); } but called from inside an LPE doEffect function I don't see any message. It does go into the flash function. I expected that a message appears in the status bar. Best regards, Michael

Hi there, These past days I've been adding an experimental UI to Inkscape for tweaking parameters in OpenType variable fonts. One major roadblock I stumbled upon is requiring me to think more carefully about some potentially deeper architectural changes. In the screenshot attached to this message you can see some text written with the Decovar variable font. The slider labeled "Testing" in the "Text & Font" dialog is wired to invoke a callback upon value-change. This callback detects the currently selected font based on the canvas text-tool cursor position, retrieves the corresponding font_instance object and invokes Freetype's FT_Set_Var_Design_Coordinates method with the updated design-space coordinates (the slider in this experiment is hardwired to adjust the weight axis of Decovar). (I really miss a Freetype method to alter a single design-space coordinate, instead of having to pass the full array, by the way) The way things work right now, unfortunately, leads to the glyphs not changing on-canvas because once they are loaded, they seem to be kept in a cache. As you can see in the screenshot, each glyph has a different weigth, based on the slider setting when the glyph was loaded for the first time. It seems quite obvious that I should do something to invalidate the cache upon dragging the slider. But that, on the other hand, should not alter glyphs in other places where the same variable font is being used in the same document. Based on all that, I think that the proper implementation would involve creating individual font_instance objects for each text chunk where a variable-font is used with non-default design-space coordinates so that they can be tweaked independently. Achieving that, though, will surely involve a bit deeper fiddling with Inkscape's text internals, which is what I expect to do in my next few days of work on this. cheers, Felipe Sanches PS: I'm crossposting this to the Inkscape-devel mailing list as the rest of the development community may be interested in receiving updates on this topic.
