Hi, http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/AnnouncePlanning048 is now in place, admittedly, mostly copy/pasted from AnnouncePlanning047. There is also a first shot at community announcement text there, plus adjusted tables (who announces what and where). I didn't touch most things there, just put myself where I could do things and adjust numbers from 047 to 048. Since we are somewhat shorthanded this time, how about getting organized with marketing? :) What's ultimately has to be done is: 1. Make sure the press-release sparkles. It merely shines through patina where it can right now. 2. Finish release notes: fill in missing information (Jon A. Cruz, I'm looking at you :)) and improve Highlights section. 3. Find more people to do announcements, and more places to announce at. 4. Actually announce. You don't have to take too much responsibility. All you need to do is a) tell us where you will announce, so we don't try to do things twice and b) be able to send announcement in a timely manner from the last approved edition of the text. Multiple issues with the filter dialog

Hello I noticed there are several issues with the filter effects dialog: 1. Wrong initial value for the "Type" combo box of feColorMatrix when adding a new filter effect or loading an existing one (patch snippet attached, please apply to 0.48 as well). 2. Undo does not work correctly: when modifying a parameter using a slider, undo does not restore the slider to its value at the start of the drag, but to intermediate positions during the drag. (Fixing this likely requires a substantial rewrite.) 3. It says feComponentTransfer is not implemented in Inkscape, but in fact it is. 4. Some sliders have completely bogus ranges. For example the surface scale slider on feDiffuseLighting operates in the absurd range [-1000, 1000] with a step of 0.1, whereas 90% of the useful values lie in the range [-1, 1]. [-5, 5] is a more appropriate choice. (I'll follow up with a ptach that fixes some of the more outrageous ranges.) Issues 2 and 3 could be worked on in the 0.49 dev cycle. Regards, Krzysztof

Windows has ZwCreateProcess, which is an undocumented NT function that works like fork() including copy-on-write shared memory between the parent and child processes, so in principle this is possible. It would be wise to push the Win32 fork() implementation to Glib before using this. We could have one "master" instance that does all the initialization, handles preferences file writes, registers itself on DBus, and forks the "slave" window processes. For this area the two big things to look at are using the might-be-more calls for undo and also to "debounce" the input from the slider so as to not trigger as many changes as the user moves things quickly. While the former will probably give some of the best 'fix' for this bug, the latter has potential to significantly improve the user experience. When I applied this to the color sliders it technically became slower, but to the users it felt much faster. It trades of raw numeric crunching speed for improved responsiveness to the user. But again, the root cause of the bug report appears to be from not using our proper under system calls. This may be direct or indirect. Slow to start

Hi all, Over the past year, or maybe even longer, I've been annoyed at how long it takes for Inkscape to start. Admittedly, I get easily annoyed because it takes only about 10 seconds for the main window to be drawn, but still.... After that it takes another 10 to 15 seconds before the CPU gets idle again, but during that second period Inkscape can already be used. On launchpad I've seen reports that this could be related to the number of fonts installed, which could indeed be part of the problem. But I also noticed this across many systems, even when not that many fonts were installed. So I figured that the only way to find out was to do some profiling. I've attached only a part of the profiling output below (If you want all of it then I'll gladly send you the 18 MB file). Roughly the first 10 seconds have been profiled, because I immediately quit Inkscape as soon as the main window was drawn. (Actually the first phase takes a lot longer than 10 seconds when profiling; those 10 seconds have been measured with all debugging and profiling flags disabled) What I found out was that it is prerender_icon() that causes the biggest part of the delay during those first 10 seconds. Maybe this is a public secret, but I just wanted to share this with you. I have no intention currently of improving this, but this at least allows us to respond accurately to some bug reports. Shebangs in scripts (LP #602005)

Hello LP bug #602005 says that Lintian complains about our Python extensions. They are marked as executable but don't have a shebang line. Leo added the shebangs but I think this is wrong. Those scripts are not meant to be executed directly by the user, only by the Python interpreter started by Inkscape. The proper solution is to mark the extension scripts non-executable. It will not prevent executing them by the Python interpreter, it will only prevent the user from accidentally running them as standalone programs and suppress the warnings. Regards, Krzysztof

Hey All, As some of you know, I've had health issues over the past 2 years and both of my hips have gone necrotic (dead bones). So, in one calendar month from today (Aug 24th) I am scheduled to have a dual hip replacement. I am unsure of how long the recovery will take, but I will try to be active again as soon as I can. Don't worry, 0.48 will be out long before then. ;) I hope that the lead-up to this will not interfere with my administration of GSoC or other duties, and that I can return to being an active contributor again quickly. SVG Working Group: Possible New Path Type

Hi, At the SVG Working Group meeting yesterday there was a discussion on adding a new path type to SVG that would allow a path to be drawn that passes automatically through a list of points. You can read a blog post from Doug Schepers about the idea at: http://schepers.cc/?p=243 We discussed the possibility of using Spiro paths rather than the initially proposed Catmull-Rom curves as Inksscape and FontForge already support Spiro curves. Hi Inkscape.rs! Just installed a new Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch. Some videoReviews on uTube. Running with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9596. It's wonderful to see it appear in the Input Devices Config. Not sure how to drive the test area. It is apparently pressure sensitive. Not seeing this so far. Two fingered zooming works pretty well. Wild having touch and pen active. There is a big button on the pad to turn off the touch. I am on Vista Home Premium. Are there any config settings anyone would like me to test? Markt

Hi, There was a lengthy discussion about markers at yesterday's SVG teleconference. At least one browser vendor would like to change the behavior of markers in the SVG1.1 spec. At the moment, markers inherit the style of their parent at the point they are defined: <g fill="black" stroke="red> <marker id="marker1"> <rect width="10" height="10"/> </marker> <path marker-start="url(#marker1)" d="M 30 60 L 80 60 L 80 110 Z"/> <g> would produce a marker on a path. Both the marker and path would have a black fill and a red stroke. On the other hand: <g fill="green" stroke="yellow> <marker id="marker2"> <rect width="10" height="10"/> </marker> <g> <g fill="black" stroke="red> <marker id="marker2"> <rect width="10" height="10"/> </marker> <path marker-start="url(#marker2)" d="M 30 60 L 80 60 L 80 110 Z"/> <g> would produce a marker on a path with the marker having a green fill and yellow stroke. The proposal is to change the behavior so that the marker fill and stroke are defined at the point they are referenced (like the <use> object). This would allow markers to take the color of the path they are attached to. It was claimed that a search of roughly 30,000 SVG's collected from the Web finds only one SVG that relies on the current spec's behavior... namely the SVG from the W3C test suite that specifically tests the behavior. I'm not sure if this is actually true as many Inkscape's markers don't include fill or stroke color. Since they are defined in the <defs> section, the fill defaults to black. If the marker fill were defined at the point of reference, I would think that it would take the object's fill... which is normally "none" for a path with an arrowhead. I pointed out that this does not solve the typical Inkscape user's problem since what most user's want is for the marker fill to be the same color as the object's stroke color, see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/165865 The plan is to reevaluate the proper way to handle markers for SVG2 and then look at what changes to 1.1 can be made that will be compatible with SVG2. Hello! Let me introduce myself to group. My name is Vladimir Kalyaev (http://kalyaev.com) one of the "gcodetools" developers. gcodetools is the Inkscape extension to add CNC functionality. It generates G-Codes from SVG drawings and aimed to be a complete CAD/CAM freeware open-source workflow. DXF import bugs. I've discovered 2 major bugs in the latest dxf_import.py release. Both of them are incorrect last "bulget" (having curvature) segment import of LWPOLYLINE. This plugin simply throws away this segment and replaces it with a straight line. Incorrect import example (straight lines point to errorneus lines. Arcs should be there): http://kalyaev.com/2010/20100513/inkscape-direct.png The source code was modified by me to correct these errors. Now all closed polylines imports correctly to Inkscape. Also there is another missing feature: POINT primitive import due to SVG limitation (there is no POINT at all inside SVG specification). dxf_import.py imports POINTS as two circular segments and they are totally indistinguishable from the other objects. Point is very usefull for "drilling" and e.t.c so a simple solution: import them as any object (red arrow in my version) with the "d" outline "M x,y ..." (x,y)=(pointX, pointY) and special SVG-attribute "dxfpoint":"1" to distinguish from the other objects. This behaviour turns on when new "checkmark" is enabled (dxf_import.inx) All of these corrections and additions are tested and work fine. I offer to merge them into current Inkscape dev distribution. What are Auto-Smooth Nodes?

Hi, Over on the www-svg@...157... list, there has been some discussion about Catull-Rom splines, triggered by http://schepers.cc/?p=243 and http://schepers.cc/svg/path/dotty.svg :) These CR curves look exactly like Inkscape's "auto smooth" node type; could someone confirm this? :) CR curves as per dotty.svg change the 4 segments around the point, although since dotty.svg hasn't got moving points functionality yet, only placing new points, then only the 2 segments before the newly placed point are seen changing as a new point is laid down. The Inkscape "auto smooth" node type interaction is the opposite in the 0.47 release, where you can't lay down AS nodes but you can change points' type to AS and then move them around, which effects the 4 segments around the point. I haven't checked the trunk source version; does the latest node tool support this? Cheers Dave

Current trunk fails linking the final binaries on Fedora. I am absolutely clueless about the automake system, but adding -lX11 -ldl -ldbus-glib-1 to INKSCAPE_LIBS in src/Makefile does the trick for me in trunk. Can this be fixed upstream or is that a Fedora specific thing that needs to remain being handled downstream? How to create a Windows Style file selection modally using GTK?

Dear All, I am writing a GTK application on Win32. I need to create a Windows style file selection dialog using GetOpenFileName function. I have referred to your source code to see how you did it (filedialogimpl-win32.cpp). I see you are calling GetOpenFileName in another thread, and in the main thread, you can g_main_loop_run to block the main window and make the file selection dialog modally. But when I write my code, I cannot block the main window. It seems that calling g_main_loop_run function would also accept and handle signals from the main window, making the main window still active. So can anyone tell me how you make your Windows style file selection dialog modally (preventing the main window from active) ? Bruce Cheng --

Upgrading Bazaar Repository Format

Hello again, miss me? We had talked about upgrading the Bazaar repository format as the 0.48 release went out the door, I'm thinking that branching is "good enough" for this. I'd like to upgrade to the '2a' format which requires everyone to be using Bazaar 1.16 or better (current is 2.1). I'll do this tomorrow night if there are no complaints. What does this mean to you? Smaller repositories and faster operations with Bazaar. What do you have to do? You can just grab an entirely new check out of the updated branch. Personally, I'd recommend just upgrading your local repos with the "bzr upgrade" command to save yourself some bandwidth. This does take a while, so I'd do it before bed. What about other branches in LP? You probably want to upgrade them as well. If you look at the branch page (something like https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk ) you'll notice a "Upgrade this branch" button at the very bottom of page. Click that. Humble palette improvements

Hi All, I'd like to start a discussion about our default palettes. Since Jon implemented the feature years back, I've done many casual surveys of which palettes designers are using and which ones designers want. My suggestion is that we sanitize our current collection of palettes to make inkscape easier for common tasks as well as remove the bloat. Here's what i recommend: --------- Kill: gray, blues, gold, green, reds, royal. hilte, topographic, khaki, and inkscape-default (its a bad default) Keep, tango, echo, ubuntu, XP, latex, websafe22, webhex Add: Android palette (below) and fedora's echo palette ------------ I also suggest we default to either tango, android, or ubuntu. it doesnt matter which one. only that we simplyfy the range of colours being displayed by default so that artists can quickly pickup a few primary hues. my reasons for listing the palettes i did in the kill pile are simply that they offer far too many variations of the same hues. its a confusingly big list and in a typical workflow, the fill and stroke dialog is the best and easiest place to go if you want to vary parameters on a selected hue. of course a few variations are fine What do you all think? Inkscape 0.48 branch made

Hey all, So I've gone and make the 0.48 release branch which will get the final cleanups and be made into the release. This should free trunk for all the fun stuff again. The branch was made at r9606. New translations and patches that are expected to go into the release should be committed to the new branch. I've updated the symbolic links in LP, so: lp:inkscape <- Trunk lp:inkscape/0.49.x <- Trunk lp:inkscape/0.48.x <- 0.48 release branch lp:inkscape/0.47.x <- 0.47 release branch For the most part, no one should have to care about this message unless you want to target something for the 0.48 branch. If you do want to make a branch for a fix, and you're not sure if it should go in the 0.48.x series please make it from the 0.48.x branch as it'll be easier to integrate than one made on from trunk. Extensions (bug)

Hey all, https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/202540 appears to pick up on a handful of extensions that are now misbehaving due to a change in our internal handling of path data. Is the latest patches approach the correct one as far as everyone thinks? I'm relying on people w/ more experience with our extensions (and changes in path handling) to give input on this. If we can avoid this blocking the release it would be great. Can't tamper w/ paths in unexpected ways. Cheers, Josh

There are currently a couple minor known issues (and a bigger one, but that one should be a easy fix) and we hope to get them wrapped up in the next couple days before branching. I know I've asked this before and there was some simple hot key to switch the radial gradient from inside to outside - but after 30 minutes of searching and trying dragging the nodes around (asymmetrical was easy, not complete invert) So I can't find the hot key - can someone help again ? Can this be documented better - I couldn't find it in the hot keys list, nor under the tutorials, nor in the "inkscape manual" - maybe it's there somewhere but not obvious (at least to me).

GSOC branch for c++ification of the SP Layer.

Hello all inkscape developers and users, I am currently developing the project named "C++ifying the SP Layer and XML node privatization". I had been doing the development for the same for about a month now and have created a branch for the corresponding developed code. The code as of now c++ifies sp-item.h/cpp , sp-line.h/cpp, sp-polyline.h/.cpp and marks the beginning of document.h/.cpp . There are some performance increase but they shall become more noticeable when I attack the major parent classes like SPDekstop, SPDocument(SPItem already done, took me 2 weeks). Command bar/Snap bar positions

Hi, I just deleted my preferences file and restarted the latest bzr version of Inkscape. I see that the command bar (file/print/etc.) and snap bar are both vertical and on the right side. I really don't like this and prefer them the way they were. Is there a way to move them back? There was recently an option at the end of the command bar to select the preferred placement but it seems to have disappeared. I think that unless there is a compelling reason to set the default to have the bars on the right, the default should be as before. I can't think of any other software that has the file/print/etc. icons on the right. In addition, changes like this mean that a lot of documentation screen shots have to be updated so the changes should really be necessary. Thanks, Tav

compilation of Inkscape on win64

Hi all I tried to compile inkscape on vista64, following the information on http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port. I downloaded both the 32 bit and the experimental 64 bit TDM-MinGW 4.5.0. With both distributions it was a no go. Building buildtool.cpp fails. Has anyone having similar experiences? Any suggestions (is it known not to work with MinGW 4.5.0, but with the former 4.4.1 release?)? Thanks a lot. extension autocompletion on save

I only tested it on Windows but as far as I can tell, if you save a file and don't explicitly type the extension, the file will be saved without one, so instead of "myfile.svg" you only get "myfile" and then the OS doesn't recognize it as an SVG file. It would be nice if the dialog recognized when no extension was typed and would add it to the file name according to the "save as type" combo box.

Guys, Please check out Krzysztof's work so far. Flat color, gradients, and now patterns are already rendered with cairo; clips and masks, filters are off. lp:~tweenk/inkscape/gsoc-cairo The most exciting is that in my testing, on flat color and gradient files it's now faster very noticeably, from 30% to twice as fast depending on file and resolution. PDF+LaTeX: extension of tex file?

Hi all, I have an important question about the extension of the generated TeX file when using the PDF+LaTeX option. Right now, it generates an imagename.pdf file and an imagename.tex file. However, if a user has chosen the same name for the image as his tex document file, the tex file is overwritten. A suggestion at Launchpad proposes to create not a .tex file but a .pdf_tex file instead. I am inclined to go with this option, as this also enables use of different export settings for pdf+latex and ps+latex and eps+latex... Extended Input settings not stored permanently

The input devices settings (for extended input, e.g. tablet) have changed some time ago to a different format. Now, I can set the stylus device to Screen to have it pressure sensitive as expected, and it is also stored as this in the preferences.xml, but on reload if forgets this setting. My stylus device is called Stylus0, the eraser Eraser0. Setting the eraser to screen mode, in the preferences.xml I see something like <group keys=";;;;;... axes="x;y;pressure;xtilt;ytilt;wheel" mode="screen" id="E:Eraser0" /> but no such entry for stylus or Stylus0 exists and is created... -- cheers, Alex

I was recently programming an extension for Inkscape and so I had different (general and specific) questions: - Is there a group of developers, who are just or mainly doing their work on extensions ? - Is the idea of extensions still in the roadmap of Inkscape? - What criteria _do_ extensions have to fulfill to get into the next release ? - Is there a kind of an Extension-Repo ? - And is it planned to include Extensions into Inkscape like we all know it from Firefox (Online -Repo connected to the program itself or Online-Repo providing "one click" installation. Hey All, I just wanted to let people know that we still have a couple blocker bugs that are actively being worked on. I got most of the "device-cmyk" issue worked out. Jon has my patch to see if he can sort the last issue (or point me in the right direction). Jon is also close to having the custom swatch issues sorted. I currently have 3 screenshots that I need to do writeups on and post. Hello Here is a simple question about SVG. Let's assume I have a circle which has a thick stroke. Then I put it in a group which has a transform attribute that specifies 0.5x scale in the horizontal direction. freehand dot bug

Hi all, I just found a bug that is perhaps a blocker. Drawing dots with ctrl+click with freehand tool works splendid, but for saving files. Saving and reopening a file with these dots, moves the dots to a different place (and mirrors them). It makes the ctrl+click functionality unusable (or at least very cumbersome to use). Ciao, Johan

Output selected items through .py extension

HI there I want to know if there is the possibility to get the ids of the selected items in an extension that is an "output" extension. I'm developing an extension and I just need to get the ids. The extension is located in "File - Save As...", not in the "Extensions" menu. This is the problem? SVG1.1F2 and expanded W3C test suite.

Hi, The SVG working group is in the final stages of publishing SVG1.1F2, an update to the original SVG1.1 specification. It has just gone out for "Last Call". At the same time the SVG test suite has been expanded. I have modified the test suite to include Inkscape output. A question for C++/gtkmm gurus: Why do we have to have ALL widgets of a dialog declared in an .h file? They aren't usable outside the dialog anyway. In general, while I appreciate many advantages of C++, the way it is used with gtkmm for Inkscape's dialogs is a major annoyance. A lot more typing in a lot more places than when using simple gtk where you can declare, create, and show a widget in a single spot in code. Spray tool shorcut

Hi all, All tools are bound to key shortcuts, except one: the spray tool. "s" is already used by the selector, and thus I suggest that we use "a' (airbrush) or, if we want to use a F key, Shift+F3, Shift+F5 or Shift+F8 (the only free Shift+F keys). What do you think? Regards, -- Nicolas

Hello I would like to ask if there is a gnome or X testing suite that could either in a controlled or monkey/fuzzy way, simulate user actions on a GTK or X in general program. For example I could write a script: when program opens click this menu, click this button, drag that object, press these keyboard keys, roll the mouse wheel etc. I want to use it to reproduce some test cases several times and then compare some profiling data. Of course, the same thing could have been used for bug hunting and regression testing, so since I haven't seen anything like that used around, I am not positive that sth like that exists. I have searched around for this, but couldn't find something (maybe I am using the wrong keywords...) except Squish for KDE (which I haven't used or know its current status). Normal/preview screen mode!

In Indesign you have two screen modes: 1. Normal with objects visible outside the document borders. 2. Preview mode where you only see things inside the document borders. It's often very nice to be able to switch between those modes when designing. Anyone know if something like that is planned in the future? Changing font family, and -inkscape-font-specification

Hello, I came across this in a file that someone sent me. It was generated by Inkscape 0.47 r22583. The font-family property is set on a text element, while child tspan elements have -inkscape-font-specification set to the full font name, but the font-family has not been set even though it has changed. Inkscape should have written font-family: Bitstream Charter. SVG viewers are therefore (correctly) not applying Bitstream Charter, in this example. And the content creator thinks that SVG viewers have 'font issues' as they don't display what was designed. Is this a known bug? Feature & String Freezes

The same Working with pixels directly makes sense for very small low resolution images which are more akin to ASCII-art than actual pictures. As the resolution of display devices increases and images are getting more realistic the need for such low-level manipulation decreases as well. Still the low-res images strike back in the form of font glyphs and icons for pocket devices. Actually there is real a problem of converting fonts from vector outlines to some bitmap form which can be used for simple drawing operations (in this particular case for use in a bootloader which should not be concerned with rendering vector graphics). The current method freetype uses fails miserably for conversion to b&w (not grayscale) bitmaps but maybe there is no way how that can be done reasonably. Grayscale is the next thing on the list of things to try but I have not seen the results yet. If your software can render some CJK/Indic/whatever TrueType/OpenType/whatever font glyphs that would be another thing where good antialiasing could be useful. Rendering of Latin or such is also of use but there drawing all the bitmaps by hand is less of an issue and many bitmap fonts already exist. Thanks Michal

About shapes with translucent borders

Hi Folks, Inkscape and other SVG renderes draw shapes by drawing first the fill, and then drawing the border on top. As Ivan noted recently (in ""), at http://dev.w3.org/SVG/modules/vectoreffects/master/SVGVectorEffectsPrimer.h… and http://www.w3.org/TR/SVGTiny12/render.html#PaintingShapesAndText , it is clear that the standard requests to do that. I didn't know that, and took the time to render this svg: http://www.jvuletich.org/Morphic3/rects.svg like this: http://www.jvuletich.org/Morphic3/rectsInM3.png . It is a bit more complicated, but I feel it is better. What do you think? Should I simplify my code and just draw one over the other? Any remaining tasks regarding documentation needs to be wrapped up ASAP, as we will be moving to string freeze soon. Feature Freeze entails: No further development work. Disable features that aren't finished Post additional inkscape-0.48-pre*.tar.gz releases Focus on critical bug fixing. Finalize all tutorials, docs, etc. Finalize all extensions Finalize about screen Translators create translations. Emergency save could need testing

I took the liberty of fixing a bug that would cause pretty much any autosave of a document that has already been saved before to fail: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/283769 I have tested with multiple files, new documents, existing documents and existing documents which were the result of an emergency save. Given that the release is slowly nearing I would love at least some confirmation that it also works on Linux(/Mac), as I've only tested on Windows. The attached file demonstrates some changes I used to add a Crash menu item to the file menu, as I didn't know of any other way to make Inkscape crash fast and reliably :) Also, if anyone can give the code a quick review that would be great as well (see revision #9470 and/or inkscape.cpp in trunk). Hi Devs, i think, the gradientool are great and useful, but this could be more advanced. Nice function are the points on the gradientline, but the line should be handle in the second mode like a curve or bezier. every point should the graident tagential to the line or curve. the other option could be possible to convert the bezier-tool into a gradienttool. please all devs help me or take me the way to great this funktion. i like inkscape and i think this is the number one of vector-tools.

mingw, freebsd cross build patches

Hi, Last year I added Inkscape to our GUB cross build tool so that it creates installers for windows and some Linux/FreeBSD flavours. Hi all, I've been working on the document properties dialog, which uses RegisteredWidgets (essentially wrappers that link a gtk widget to an XML attribute, so changing the widget changes the XML), and I've noticed that the code doesn't really use the attribute constants in attributes.h. My question: instead of using straight strings, for example "inkscape:document-units", should the code be using sp_attribute_name(SP_ATTR_INKSCAPE_DOCUMENT_UNITS) - Alex

Hello, As I am sitting on the train returning from LGM 2010, I thought I would give you all a summary of the conference. There where many nice talks and it was great to finally meet many Inkscapers who I only knew by name. There were also very nice endorsements of Inkscape. The Fedora design team made a big point of expressing how much they LOVE Inkscape. Inkscape appeared all over the place at the conference, from designing icons to designing fonts. I am sure I have forgotten somethings as my memory needs a serious upgrade... so other Inkscape attendees, don't hesitate to correct me. Here is a summary of talks by Inkscapers about Inkscape or other topics. Friday: Jasper van de Gronde: Diffusion curves (gradients defined by values specified along the defining paths). Felipe Sanches (JucaBlues): GNU LibreDWG to read DWG files from AutoCAD. Saturday Jakub Steiner: Icon Workflows with Inkscape. Alexandre Prokoudine: Digital photography workflow on Linux with darktable. Andy Fitzsimons: Inkscape for everybody. Elisa de Castro Guerra: Workshop for Inkscape beginners (in French and English). Sunday John Phillips: Aiki framework. As a side note, he used Inkscape for his presentation, putting all his slides on one page and then zooming in and out on individual ones. Other Inkscapers present included Ivan Louette, Gemy Cedric, and Johan Engelen. My only critique is that it would have been nice to have had a demonstration of some of the new features of the upcoming Inkscape release. The list of other interesting talks is long. You can look at the website for a list of talks and the videos of all the talks should be online soon if not already. Some of the crowd favorites were the talk by the NodeBox2 group and the talk by Tom Lechner who showed a very impressive demonstration of putting images on a sphere and then unwrapping it. During the talks and at informal gatherings, there was quite a bit of discussion about what users need from Inkscape. Here is a list of requests: 1. Hyphenation support in the text tool. 2. Faster loading/displaying fonts in the menu. 3. Command line interface without opening the GUI. 4. Trapping for commercial work. 5. Fixes for bugs #167809 (Linked offset performance issues) and #270983 (Terrible performance node editing even in outline mode). In general there is a desire for more SPEED! 6. Shortcuts in tooltips (especially for tools). 7. Don't muck up imported SVG, e.g. turning ellipses into paths. This is important when planning to animate things. Many people design with Inkscape and then use Scribus for preparing files for commercial printing. Members of the SVG working group were present which lead to a number of useful discussions. They will hold a working group meeting tomorrow. Here are a number of topics that were covered: 1. Support for multipage documents. The proposal for multipage documents has been dropped from SVG 1.2 due to many negative comments. The proposal was too complicated for simple uses and not sophisticated enough for advance uses. If we push, a simplified version could be added to SVG 2.0. 2. Support for patterns along paths. Coming out of the discussion on Power Strokes lead by Johan Engelen, Doug Schepers of the SVG standards group expressed a great interest in pursuing this as it would allow some LPE like effects to be animated. Doug, in general, would like to see greater ability to edit/animate SVG. 3. Support for diffusion curves. 4. SVG Fonts: Firefox and IE at the moment don't have any interest in supporting, preferring to focus on WOFF implementation. It was pointed out by several people that SVG Fonts are much more useful for artistic purposes as one can imagine animating the glyphs or adding special effects to them. 5. Increasing the bit depth for some of the filters to avoid artifacts (e.g. the displacement filter or lighting filters). There is a need to balance requirements for small devices (small memory) with the need for large ones (smooth/accurate displays) but perhaps a compromise could be made (I've suggested adding an optional second byte to the bump maps). 6. Standardizing layers (Inkscape currently uses tagged groups for layers). Other SVG news is that Adobe is again interested in supporting the standard and that IE9 will support all of SVG except SVG fonts and filters. Finally, the SVG working group really stressed the need for community participation, especially from Inkscape. I have volunteered to help represent Inkscape in the group. So let me know on this list or off of any thing you want raised with the group. You can also join the SVG mailing list (www-svg@...157...). Jasper is already a member and I just joined. One of the more interesting talks was about trying to develop Open Source tools for fashion design. It seems that there is a need to develop adjustable patterns for those who don't have the petite bodies the industry designs towards. The industry just scales up the patterns for bigger women, leading to poor fit. After hearing the talk, someone has already created an Inkscape extension to help with the work. Dear all: Harald Armin Massa was so kind as to invite me to give a talk at EuroPython 2010 on JessyInk. The talk will focus in particular on the Inkscape extensions I wrote for JessyInk. As such, I thought it might be a very good opportunity to promote Inkscape, provide people with an introduction to writing Python extensions for Inkscape and to present new features or plans that concern Inkscape's extension facility. Therefore, I would like to ask for your input: *) What are the most essential points that have to mentioned when it comes to Inkscape extensions written in Python ("inkex" and install dirs come to mind)? *) Are there any (Python) extensions that demonstrate interesting / unusual / particularly helpful patterns that would be helpful for someone looking to develop new extensions? *) Is there any page / tutorial / other place (irc?, this mailing list?) that you would like to have mentioned where developers can get help when they have an extension related problem? *) Are there any new features or exciting plans for the future of the extension facility that I should tell people about? Questions are : About attributes Is it possible to add completely new attributes into a svg file ? like: <sodipodi:namedview inkscape:template-name="Web banner 728x90" inkscape:template-name-fr="Bannière Web 728x90" inkscape:template-category="Web/Banner" inkscape:template-description="A banner for a website, size: 728x90 px" ... /> Also, is "sodipodi:namedview" the correct markup for template attributes ? Categories names Translations Do we have to traduce categories names ? If yes, we can add new attributes in svg files, like : inkscape:template-category-fr="Fond d'écran" Notation Should we use underscore between words ? like : inkscape:template-category="Paper_sizes" or can we simply use: inkscape:template-category="Paper sizes" Keywords I think that keywords are optionals, because they must be traduced in too many languages. And there is categories in order to find templates. Should we use them or not ? Currents categories Background Is "background" the same category as "Desktop" ? Defaults "default_mm.svg" and "default_pt.svg" don't respect specifications. Must be "default.mm.svg" and "default.pt.svg". Is it correct ? Thanks you for all :-)

Devlibs updates

Hello I made the following changes to the devlibs: 1. Upgrade Python to 2.6.5 2. Upgrade lxml to 2.2.4 3. Upgrade numpy to 1.4.1 4. Upgrade gettext-tools to 0.17 Please look for any breakage it might have introduced. The gettext tools update was a bit problematic and two versions of libintl are now contained in the build dir: one is being used by Inkscape and the GTK stack, and the second one by the gettext tools. Fixing this would require either convincing the gettext binaries to use the devlibs libintl, which I have no idea how to do, or rebuilding all other libraries to use the one built by gettext. In the longer run, I think that cross-compiling the devlibs from Linux might be less painful than recompiling them as needed in MSYS (mainly because MSYS is excruciatingly slow and sometimes doesn't work). Showstopper bug

This is easily a no-go for the release: - with Pen or Pencil, draw anything in Spiro mode (any other LPE would do the same) - clone (alt+d) - select original and try to move it by arrow key - watch Inkscape freeze and die an out-of-memory death, apparently in some kind of infinite recursion. I suspect this has something to do with LPE stack cloning that Johan recently worked on, but as I don't watch commits as closely as I would like lately, I also cc: others who did some nontrivial changes. Hi, Another check-markup related issue: I've just activated gettext context macro C_() support in po/Makevars in order to include all the status bar messages added in the new node tool, but check-markup now returns an error message for each string, translated or not: ... fr.po: Not in msg format: #: ../src/ui/tool/transform-handle-set.cpp:479 msgctxt "Transform handle tip" msgid "<b>Rotation center:</b> drag to change the origin of transforms" msgstr "" I guess it is related to the new msgctxt line. Bug again, I'm really not a Perl expert... Could you please see if you can fix this issue? Regards, -- Nicolas

Hey all, I did the release this afternoon, but realized I forgot to write the e-mail! :) None the less, I put together a pre0 release for the upcomming 0.48.
