Discussion for the next developers meeting

I missed the last developers meeting but intend to make the next one. I'm still in Istanbul and I've had a good chance to think things through more thoroughly and simplify things, still I'll have to be briefer that I otherwise would be as I don't have access to all my resources and am working on a very old laptop. Points: -Pitfalls of CSS and Javascript and indeed SIML, which is now deprecated. *I have some examples of CSS and Javascript I've put together, I'll make sure all the examples are in both CSS and Javascript so the pitfalls can be seen. -Possibility of a dual implementation model, both CSS and Javascript. CSS being limited to just CSS and fully editable in the GUI, Javascript only limited by way of features available (re security etc...) but not being fully editable in the GUI, inkscape isn't an IDE. -Performance issues with Firefox ECMA scripting engine on older machines. -Options for implementing security beyond that provided by the ECMA engine by default. -Modular design, allowing the ECMA engine and APIs to more easily be integrated with other open source applications. *Engine integration, *API modules providing and API view with module availability restricted based on use. i.e. Runtime tool extensions need APIs that should not be available to SVG documents. -Lightly cover extra tools and GUI changes required for animation and interactivity etc... This will require some mockups to have a proper discussion about. -Possibility of assistance from Universities by way of taking on some of the work as elements of research projects. -Potential for revenue generation in a souped up version. -Discuss a Python2/3 implementation written in Javascript that I've used via University. This would allow for existing Python plugins that are apparently quite broken at the moment to be ported to javascript should the time come -Potential for macro recording and real-time extensions, e.g. new drawing tools like the shape recognition extension I've been working on. Finally, -Canvas performance, options available and discuss the current implementation and bottlenecks and how this can be moved forward into the up and coming OpenGL, Vulkan etc.. implementation.

c++17 usage

Developers, in our next meeting I'd like to discuss c++17 usage - specifically new std library features (https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=C%2B%2B17). Allow me to be blunt: so far we've achieved nothing but to increase complexity. For the introduction of 'filesystem' alone we already had to introduce three different strategies: - use std::filesystem as default for up-to-date gcc toolchains - use boost::filesystem on macOS to not break support for older OS releases - add -lstdc++fs linker flag for gcc 8.x I propose to refrain from using std c++17 library features and go for boost on all platforms where applicable (e.g. boost::filesystem). This way we avoid introducing new platform/compiler specific code paths that don't bring any benefit. René

tuning the canvas

I missed the dev meet up, I'm on holiday in Istanbul at the moment, here's some additional thoughts i had nodding off last night: I don't know what the performance bottle necks in the canvas are but i had a think about vector graphics performance and this is what I identified: caching of objects and image sections, reducing the fidelity when an object is being modified dynamically, improved drawing algorithms (integer) ... that's a no brainier (fits in with fidelity), clipping (which also fits in with caching), and finally JIT compiling drawing operations with dynamic elements in their inner loops so that they can be properly optimized out, vectorized and unrolled etc...

at the very least it should be podssijble to switch over to almost pure integer rendering with AA disabled to get enough performance to preview animations in real time.

canvas rasterizing performance

from what's bewen said it seems like the canvas has some performance issues. I have quite a bit of background in relation to tuning rendering engines for performance. help i used to do 3d animated graphics on a 386 with a few mewg of ram. even sqeuuzed a simple cad package onto as bbc computer with 32k of memory. basically, if i get time i'll take a look at it and tyry to identify what the performance bottle knecks are and how to improve them.

This is first to say 'thanks' to Mario Voigt for updating the Clonesp extension. I'm busy these days, so I'm not keeping up with what I should be doing for Inks. However, it seems to me that the fact that there are now two developers on this project means that it should go to Gitlab (or a similar). I hardly know anything about Gitlab, so I don't know where to start. If someone would like to give me a pointer or two, I could try to get that going. Or if someone can simply do it for me (and Mario) that would be welcome. Andrew

Browser support for animated SVG Animated SVG files with JavaScript as the animation type are supported by all major browsers. This means that your animation will work and look the same in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Unfortunately, if you choose CSS, not all properties work the same in these browsers. undo redo stack enhancements

I have another idea for the undo redo stack, effectively being able to roll back, make a change at a point in history then roll forward again. I think this would be most impressive in bitmap editing software such as krita. For instance, setting the stroke parameters, say colour to keep it simple. Drawing a line, doing some other stuff. Then deciding that you want to change the stroke parameters for everything from a point in history. This should be a simple roll back roll forward and performance can be achieved if snapshots are taken. Here's the original shape recognition plugin. I'll try and get a delta ready so that shape recognition is close to perfection. Hello, all. I'm sorry to spam the whole dev list with this, but I'm not sure how else to handle the situation. I'm not a programmer; I'm an artist (who has done a little bit of C++/C# programming.) My issue is that my workflow is dependent upon an interface that disappeared after mid-2014. So I've been running 0.48.5 since then. The interface is the Pen Tool, Spiro Spline setting. The essential interface is *click* for corner node, *drag* for smooth node. This workflow is extremely intuitive - so much so that it's proven more valuable to me than the numerous improvements made to Inkscape since 2014. With the release of 1.0, I thought I'd investigate making local builds and seeing whether I could modify my local source to behave like 0.48.5 with the Pen Tool. (Thanks to the Wiki instructions, I'm successfully compiling 1.0 locally!) What I've found, of course, is that everything's different. Where 0.48.5 had enum { SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_CLICK, SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_DRAG }; ...1.0 has: void _bsplineSpiro(bool shift); //creates a node in bspline or spiro modes ... void _bsplineSpiroStartAnchor(bool shift); //continues the existing curve with the union node in bspline or spiro modes So the shift modifier (as opposed to still mouseup vs. drag + mouseup) has permeated, and click/drag distinctions are discarded. My question is this: How would someone (particularly a non-programmer) approach re-implementing click/drag in the Pen Tool? Keep in mind, I'm not trying to disrupt the official source or product; I just need to make local builds for my own use. And it's not an emergency - 0.48.5 does everything I require, and if need be I can just stick with that. However, if there's a way to get the old Pen interface with all the 1.0 improvements, I'd like to try. Thanks, Erik Robson

Hi all developers, during recent discussions, we have been pondering the idea of regular dev meetings, and discussing them again on the live today, we are suggesting to hold them every eight days (so that if someone has an agenda problem with a day of the week, it'll still be okay for most of the meetings) . The idea for these meetings would be to talk about the development of Inkscape code informally, discuss bug reports we have been working on, recently raised regressions, etc, so that we could help one another if needed and get a wider sense of who is working on what area, and how things are progressing overall with features or releases in mind. Hi all, this is a short "what do you think about this?" message about gitlab. Current state of things : we currently use gitlab on their "gold" plan which does include proprietary extensions to the free software gitlab core (those features are scoped labels, multiple assignees, related issues (/duplicates), multiple issues boards, exceptions to protected branches, push rules, merge approvals). By "just asking", we could also have access to group-level gold features, such as Epics which are like meta-issues to track releases or big feature plans ( https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/group/epics/ ) and Group milestones (instead of having per-project milestones) The question is simple : should we ? (Pro : we get access to it; Cons : it's asking to use proprietary features, which is not something we usually do) -- Marc

Hi, I'm currently writing an import filter to import free flow pdf text into Scribus for editing but i'm aware that there's no free pdf editor worth it's salt because pdf is patent encumbered. as a result all pdf editors that let you edit free flow pdf text are quite expensive and the free versions often limited by watermarks. anyhow, i hope i've avoided any patent issues as layout and fonts used bare no resemblance to anything pdf uses as I aggregate all the text and use Scribus's quite advanced layout engine to do the bulk of the heavy lifting with some vaguely intelligent aggregation code to aggregate the text in the filter. anyhow, can anyone give me a heads up on pdf and patents?

- hi everyone - I've been looking at animation support and evaluating the competition. also I found a javascript implementation of the web animations api which may be the animation engine to support as it's getting native support in browsers. that doesn't limit us by not allowing support for snap or GSAP on top of this. web animations API works with css and svg and provides interfaces to animation, keyframes and timelines. - - https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js <https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js> github.com *web-animations/web-animations-js* <https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js> JavaScript implementation of the Web Animations API - web-animations/web-animations-js - SVGator, a commercial svg animator supports javascript (using it's custom engine) or css - I still wouldn't suggest supporting any old javascript, but a cut down version of javascript where complex functions get replaced with stubs that return some default value and the code can be evaluated to get the animation (limited by what javascript functionality is implemented) and property settings for the animation can be traced. I would do this roughly by using the built in parser in the javascript engine to calculate animation settings to be presented in the UI. the commercial svg animation tool SVGator supports javascript and css. it doesn't allow the javascript to be modified in the application, I haven't tried importing and svg file with modified javascript. it may also be a good idea to support snap or GSAP ontop of this, on the other hand, they may become obsolete as web animation s API gets full support and people start writing functions for it such as the morph one found here https://coherent-labs.com/Documentation/cpp-gameface/d1/dea/shape_morphing.… - - for instance, simple loops may be supported, but more complex(that use the result of a function call to determine the loop[ conditions) ones may be too complex to support rationally - Doing this loses nothing as the animation will still run in a browser, but Inkscape may only support animations with complex functionality partitioning - Accurate animation playback can still be supported by executing the javascipt but I would limit imports to trusted javascript and not any old javascript for reasons of side effects and security. there are already shims that implement SMIL in javascript, and assuming they allow you to position the timeline and query keyframes and object attributes they should allow for a relatively straight forward SMIL implementation so long as javascript is supported. this proposal sees inkscape supporting SMIL, CSS and javascript. the Web Animations API implementation should allow for the support of CSS without any javascript but can still be used for the actual process of animating and setting the timeline position. at the moment I'm still working on importing text from pdf files in scribus. I have most of the functionality already implemented for this out just requires a bit of polish. to do that I'm going to refactor the code to use a simple framework that should make the code a lot cleaner, be faster and support all the features for the Polish needed to have a decent implementation.

After talking with multiple people, I've decided that the best format for an online hackfest is to have one spread out over the summer. chrome's support for modifying web animations api in it's developers console.

Chrome seems to do a reasonable job of capturing and modifying web animations API in JavaScript. Its not so hot, however, when it comes to elements that have animations that are programmatically generated, it doesn't even group them all together and identify the source of programmatic generation, which in many cases is just a simple trace of the code. I dare say it could do better than just passively listening out for animation events and actually infer many of the from the source documents.

[GSoC Paths] Status update

Hi everyone, I would like to provide a status update on the Path Library Improvement project. Since this is my first report to the list (the last one wasn't public), I'd like to discuss everything done so far. This report is huge and quite technical, so if you want a short version, it is this: "I have successfully written a relatively short piece of code that creates simplification results totally identical to the livarot version. The algorithm is the same as livarot and is nearly as fast. I'm about to start cleaning it, documenting it and integrating it with simplify, lpe-simplify and pencil tool. This will be done within the next two days." Now the detailed version: According to the original schedule, I was supposed to work on the Path Simplification feature and that is what I have been doing. I started with writing some boilerplate code that will allow me to trigger my own Path Simplification code in Inkscape. This is so that I can compare its results with livarot based simplification quickly. I started exploring the simplification algorithm of lightvarot and wrote some path flattening (the process of approximating a path by line segments) myself. I integrated these in Inkscape and the algorithm produced pretty satisfying results but it was too slow. In a "Release" build, the performance might be okay for a "Path > Simplify" but would do pretty bad in live path effects. For what it's worth, I also created an animation explaining this algorithm. You can find it here: https://moazin.github.io/simplification-algos.html Disappointed by its performance, I replaced the main part of the algorithm with its equivalent from livarot (that's explained in the link attached under the title "Livarot / Simplifying the curve". The performance improved but there were significant differences between the results. I had a choice here, I could either just rewrite a cleaner version of livarot's code or understand what's causing the differences and fix those. I chose to do the latter. I started following the procedure "draw paths -> trigger both algorithms -> debug both simultaneously -> understand and fix the differences -> repeat". Going down this route, I understood almost all the parts of livarot and was even able to discover/fix bugs in both livarot and lightvarot. Here are the reasons behind the differences: 1. The codes for flattening the paths were different so obviously there were differences in the results. I simply implemented livarot's algorithm for splitting cubic beziers to solve this problem. 2. There is an iteration of Newton-Raphson method. (I'll probably add what this iteration is and what it does in the link attached above soon, it's mostly math stuff). I suspect that the code for this iteration in lightvarot is mathematically incorrect, so I fixed it. I will do the derivation again to be sure if it's really a bug though. Anyways, I fixed it by replacing the constants from my derivation (which are identical to the livarot version). 3. There is a special portion in livarot code which fixes what livarot calls the "splotch" problem. When the number of points you're fitting are few, you can sometimes get a fit which fits the points correctly but overall doesn't fit the polyline properly. There is some special code that calculates error differently to take into account this situation and thereby avoid bad fits. My code was missing this code, so I wrote it. 4. There is a slight optimization in livarot that reuses some calculations and I suspect it compromises on the accuracy of the fits. I need to investigate more to be sure. I fixed it in livarot by simply using the non-optimized version. (There are two `AttemptSimplify`) 5. There were some silly bugs in livarot's non-optimized `AttemptSimplify`. A minus was replaced by a plus and a weight factor was commented. Fixed both of those on the livarot side. After doing all of these changes, both versions are producing totally identical results. The computation time is also mostly identical. There is a very minor difference in the flattening part which I'm working on. The code can be found at: https://gitlab.com/moazin/inkscape/-/tree/integrating-livarot-low-redesign My code lives in `src/path/PathSimplifier(.h/.cpp)` and `src/path/PathFlattener(.h/.cpp)`. The temporary verb "Path > MyOperation" triggers code in `src/path/path-myoperation(.h/.cpp)`. The commit history is pretty much garbage since I have been experimenting a lot. Over the weekend I'll be cleaning this code, documenting it properly and integrating it in lpe-simplify and the pencil tool. I'll add the final resulting code "cleanly" on a fresh branch. An interesting part of this project is the "design" of whatever code I write. But I think it's too early for me to start thinking about it because as I move towards Boolean Operations, a lot of new things will be discovered and whatever "design" I decide on would change. C++ & Gtk dependencies

Hi All, I just wanted to follow up a couple of recent discussions on our build dependencies. 1. There was some talk of moving to C++17. Tav - I think you were going ahead with a dependency bump in master? Are we still doing this, or did we find any issues? 2. Are we OK to bump to Gtk+ 3.24? AFAIK this is the final Gtk+ 3 version so would be a good stable target for Inkscape 1.1. The only issue would be RHEL/CentOS/Debian LTS are stuck on an older version. My feeling about this kind of thing is that we keep Inkscape 1.0.* as our LTS and push ahead with a dependency bump in master. Best wishes, Alex

Hello everyone, is there a possibility to get some error status and/or error messages when executing actions via, e.g., activate_action()? I had a look at the glibmm documentation but couldn't find anything regarding this topic. I've just included executing Inkscape actions from the internal Python interpreter feature I'm porting to the current master branch (https://gitlab.com/wiesi/inkscape/-/tree/python-internal-1) and it would be nice (maybe even mandatory) for the Python user to get some feedback whether an action was successful and a meaningful error message if not. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Does glibmm have some infrastructure for this task that I'm just unable to find or does it really require some extended surgery? Thanks, Thomas

[feature] Export PNG / bulk generation

Hello, In my use of Inkscape, I use the "export png image" feature from the vector drawing to a specific size. However, I systematically use the generation multiple times because I work with standardized sizes. I use it on my website to pick the smallest appropriate image. I am thinking of evolving the export feature to have predefined sizes and being capable of generating all the images at once. For instance, by selecting a generation profile and a destination folder. need help implementing command line args

Hi, For a personal project I'm trying to add the advanced png export options as commandline args. I've got most of it working, but am now getting blocked by a weird issue when trying to use 0 (zero) as an input value for an OPTION_TYPE_INT argument. If the value is zero, the argument doesn't get added to the options VariantDict (I check this in inkscape-application.cpp around line 1500). If i use any other int value it does get passed along. The reason this is causing me problems is, I add options like the the antialiasing settings and those are based on zero-indexed enums, but don't use 0 as a default. This means I can't just set default value to zero in the InkFileExportCmd struct (as happens for margin ). Hopefully this makes sense to someone here. My background isn't cpp so I'm probably missing something simple (although I did briefly go over the glib source code as well lol). If I can get something working I'll contribute of course. find some discussion about what's required to implement animation in different ways.. it all boiled down to either writing a bespoke animation engine or writing an SVG DOM it turned out that the SVG DOM is a lot smaller and easier to implement than expected. this makes thew javascript path viable and gives a usable industry-standard API for third parties to use. Nothing is lost if the javascript in a file can't be parsed sufficiently well as inkscape would revert back to it's old self, with animation disabled, and just be an SVG editor. The javascript could also be edited in a code editor in inkscape and the play feature still available to play the animations, the javascript code editor could also have features designed for editing animation information meaning inkscape would still be better than nothing for js animation it just would have full GUI integration. Spidermonkey doesn't seem too hard to integrate, creating a shim for a javascript a library that provides an API for Inkscape hopefully shouldn't be too tricky and possible with a few precompiler directives in the code and a script https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/SpiderMonkey/How_… Spidermonkey looks a little short on documentation especially when it comes to C/JaverScript interoperability. V8 maybe seems a little trickier to embed, only a little not a great deal but has good, clear documentation. it is however C++ base, so it how well that mixes with Inkscape's choice of c https://chromium.googlesource.com/v8/v8/+/branch-heads/6.8/samples/hello-wo… do it's going to take some searching for documentation and examples of wrapping up c for javascript and javascript for c to determine which one will embed the nicest based on hope Inkscape's SPI is implemented and also look at debugging support and any other featurtes

I'm currently migrating the PaintSelector and friends to C++ so I'd prefer to kill the old dialog at this stage rather than maintain it! AV

Inkscape 1.0 - Icon size woes.

All, I have loaded Inkscape 1.0 both on windows and on Linux (Arch). I have both on my laptop. The biggest problem is that toolbars that used to fit properly now spill-over into elipsized menus and the spacing between the rulers and icons are now double what it was before. In 92.5 the interface showed 24 icons on the vertical toolbars. In 1.0 only 17 are visible. (despite all icons sizes being set to "smaller" in preferences) On Arch I have the Adwaita icon them (about all that is available anymore). On Windows I guess it comes with the icons. Both interfaces are almost identical in the size growth of the icon size and the ruler-to-iconbar spacing. This isn't a problem unique to Inkscape. All apps making the Gtk+2 to Gtk+3 jump have faced the issue. Gimp, Mozilla, Geany, etc.. and most have found a way to solve the problem. I know it is frustrating for you as well, but for small screens like laptops -- it is a big issue. css doesn't provide a solution a global solution, despite the Gtk+3 documentation pointing in that direction with https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkToolbar.html Searching, there are old solutions suggesting entries in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/setting.ini similar to: gtk-icon-sizes = panel-menu=16,16:panel=16,16:gtk-menu=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-button=16,16 Gimp 2.10 has somehow solved this issue so that interface is comparable to Gtk+2 and will still allow pickup of the Gtk+2 themes. I'm not sure how they did it. Whether they wrote a partial theme to handle it or what. I'll keep searching and I'll keep working with the interface to see if I can find something that can work. The actual solution needs to come from the gnome developers of Gtk+3 providing programatic control of the toolbar icon sizes rather than leaving them to be overridden by the themes. The fact that Gtk+3 was such a moving target for so long and the fact toolbar icon size has gone unaddressed this long is a shame. You all have put so much good work into Inkscape for the 1.0 release, it must be really frustrating that the new Gtk+ version doesn't provide near the polished look that Gtk+2 provided off the shelf. -- David C. Need help with random transform in cache

Hi all. I need help with this about random scaling of cached elements to document units. In the function "scheduleTransform" in "src/display/drawing- item.cpp:603" I recive randomly not scale/document scale affine in "ctm_change" var. Can anyone give a look I spend 2 days on it without result... to me is a 1.0 blocker. Asume you have this conditions to test: * Inkscape with cache enabled (size>0) * Document units diferent than pixels Testing: * Output the affine "ctm_change" prefiously mentioned. * Open inkscape. * Draw a bigest circle that cover your screen. * Create multiple text with click + type some leters as fast you can over the circle. When the circle become a box, see the output and you discober there is a diferent scaling with the doc scale, normaly is 0 scale. Thanks so much for get into, Jabier.

I am running OS X 10.12.6 One small bug. When starting Inks, it doesn't become the top window. The window is buried; you have to activate it manually. Hi, is there any ongoing projects with goal of making inkscape also as modular UX/UI design tool ?

in my search for foss design tool for UX/UI, Flow design and organization, so far only very few are available, out of that only few seems to be working (with some hardwork). but most of them are proprietary solutions or else oriented towards it. afaik, inkscape has better design features than any other design tool out there ... however it lacks a few features to make it as a design tool for any front end designer. those are : 1. svg to code conversion 2. library management for projects 3. parametric design convention 4. standard templates 5. animation if those are made available through python, then it will become invincible, and i dont know about akira so far, tried but failed to build several times in this year. like this : 1. select a target device, 2. choose a template dimension, 3. make flow for ux (from synthesized user flow in ux design with api), 4. collect/make icons, fonts, color palettes, 5. get standard components for the chosen device, 6. integrate together activity by activity in each discrete flow part of the 3 step. 7. convert every single ui from step 6 to css or android xml so that the layers, objects can be reused in Qt, Android, React. This would definitely give free software projects an upper hand among the developer community like Fdroid, and other web based projects. However some very few projects are avaible in FOSS with such ideas, are no where near to inkscapes design versality. regards cosmobird.

Inkscape devs, I was looking though the 1.0 Beta Release Notes, and came across screenshots showing the new Gtk+3 interface. I wanted to drop a note in the talk (discussion) section related to the need to control icon size as the current Gtk+3 icons take up roughly 200% of the equivalent Gtk+2 icons. Specifically looking at: https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=File:Origin_in_upper_left_pa… This has been a huge problem for all applications that have attempted the Gtk+2 to Gtk+3 switch. As a result of the toolkit change, many of the icon bars that neatly fit in the space available on a laptop, now spill over into elipseized button menus and the actual drawing screen real-estate is reduced dramatically. Gimp has managed a reasonable balance where many other major apps and editors have failed. I would like to follow and contribute to the discussion on the upcoming 1.0 beta release on the wiki and would therefore request a wiki account (I'm a real breathing human and not a spam bot or spammer) Thanks. -- David C. GSoC proposal for Path Library Improvement

Hi everyone, I am Moazin, a BS student at Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences and I am applying for Google Summer of Code 2020. I want to work on the Path Library Improvement project. Inkscape relies on two libraries for its geometry related operations. One is *lib2geom* which was designed specially for Inkscape and the other is *livarot*, a library written in somewhere in 2003 that has some unique features which *lib2geom* doesn't have. Features such as: path simplification, line scanning (flowing text), path offset/Inset, boolean operations and some modes of Tweak Tool. While *livarot* is functionally good, it's quite outdated. It was written long ago and it's extremely hard to understand it or maintain it. The goal of this project is to implement all of these features either in *lib2geom* or outside it while using *lib2geom's* features as much as possible. GSoC proposal for GPU rendering using Pathfinder

Hello everyone! Some of you may know me from the IRC channel as linkmauve, this year I’m applying for the Google Summer of Code! I’m a computer science student from France, and I’ve been interested in computer graphics for a long while. I started quite a few years ago when I was working on emulators (such as Citra and Dolphin), I eventually wrote a shader compiler for running 3DS graphics on ARM processors, tried my hand at the demoscene, and wrote the 3D transitions in LibreOffice Impress. But now I want to bring that knowledge to more useful projects, from which a lot of artists who use them every day could benefit. My goal is to bring GPU rendering to Inkscape, in a way that is both portable, performant, maintainable, and understandable by future maintainers. In order to do that, I suggest to use Pathfinder, a library Mozilla is working on, for canvas and SVG rendering, so that efforts improving it can be pooled between the two organisations. Hello! My name is Thu Vu and I’m a sophomore studying Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas. I have originally first heard of Inkscape when I was around 14 when I was interested in creating vector art and various graphic art pieces. I have heard several artists use it to create wonderful art pieces that have inspired me. Since I have personally used Inkscape before I would have some background insight from a user’s perspective. This would give me an advantage in the knowledge of what a user would like to be implemented or simplified for better user experience when using Inkscape. I have not worked on any open-source projects before, but in joining GSoC’20, it would help me give me first-hand experience of what it is like to work on projects such as that. My main technical skills consisted of C++ and Java as well as HTML, CSS, some JavaScript for web design and development. I also have additional knowledge of working in a UNIX/Linux environment. For project proposals, I’m interested in the Better CSS Style Sheet Support, Refactoring, and Path Library Improvements projects. In all honesty, it gives me great excitement to be possibly working on an Inkscape project from a different perspective besides a user standpoint. I look forward to learning a lot in any of these projects. Also, considering this would be the first time I am applying to GSoC as well as work on an open-source project, I would appreciate any advice on the application process and any tips going forward. Introducing myself and my GSOC Proposal/Application: UI-Free Inkscape

Hi dear Inkscape Developer Community, I want to submit a proposal for the "UI-Free Inkscape" project idea of this year's Google Summer of Code. Right now, I am doing a sabbatical (since November 2019) and am enrolled at the Vienna University of Technology. Before that, I was working as a Software Developer for several years mostly on graphics related software (Ogre3D, Unity3D, Augmented Reality Apps, Medical Image Processing, etc.). I really like open-source software, was able to do some small contributions to projects like Emscripten, Ogre3D, and several JavaScript projects. I think the GSOC program is an awesome opportunity to work fulltime on Open Source Software, like yours. Due to the current pandemic situation, I hand to do re-organize and partly reschedule my Coding Tour I was already starting in the US for the next couple of weeks. This is the reason for my "last-minute" application. Fortunately, I am able to continue the tour online, here from Austria. Anyway, even though I am behind schedule for my GSOC proposal I hope that I will be able to submit a successful application to you and show you that I am able to succeed in making a UI-Free Inkscape version or at least being able to move this ongoing effort a huge step forward. *The "two patches" rule is a great idea, but as I am a bit late in the application process I wanted to ask if it is required to submit them before the upcoming proposal deadline tomorrow?* I definitely will be able to send them within the next 1-2 weeks, it would be great if that would not be a blocker for my proposal (at least not right now). The reason why I chose the "UI-Free Inkscape" project idea is because I am a huge fan of automating things, and I really like the idea of being able to use Inkscape for several tasks on a server, or in the backend of an application. I think this might increase the usage of Inkscape even more. I saw that this idea is already an ongoing task. It is probably hard to say how much effort there is left, and how likely it is to complete the task within the GSOC time. On the other hand, if the task can not be completed within the time of GSOC, it should be possible to move it a substantial step forward. My idea would be to iterate in small steps and frequently submit those parts for which I was able to remove the UI dependency for review. There is already a lot of valuable information regarding the GSOC process on the Inkscape wiki, still,* I would like to ask if you have any suggestions, tips and/or tricks for my proposal submission?* Thanks in advance for your support, Harald

Hello there, I'm Aadhish Sriram, student studying my second year of college majored in Computer Science and Engineering at SASTRA University, Tamil Nadu, India. I'm aspiring Web Developer, mostly self taught and an Open Source Enthusiast. I'm well versed in C/C++, ES6+ Javascript and React and the tools I mostly use are open sourced ones. I've known about Open Source in my high school days but I never known someone like us contributed to it, not until last Hacktoberfest. I've been introduced to a new perspective of open source where I can contribute to the tools or applications that I use everyday. I couldn't participate in last year Hacktoberfest. I made pact to myself that I would have at least one contribution in next year. Ever since that all my projects are open sourced and available in Github. Now I'm increasing my skills in web development (increasing my knowledge in existing tools), improving my portfolio and recently started contributing to Inkscape and planning to contribute in Godot and Blender (All are made in *C/C++* which is a language I love). My project idea is UI-Free Inkscape project and maybe implement some more actions or verbs related to UI-Free project. <#use-cases>Use Cases Some of the use cases of the project: - A user can queue bulk rendering of his vectors in a render farm or an GPU optimized server. - A professional graphic designer could queue his/her vector drawing to render in his/her organization's server for rendering. - A user or graphic designer could draw his entire SVG using command lines and not worry about disk space comes with graphical dependency.

Currently I'm doing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from The National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. My interest in programming developed about 8 years ago when I started working on apps and websites. At that time I also found out about Inkscape as a free tool to work with graphics and it blew my mind that I could achieve the same things with open source software that I would get from other paid software which I could not afford. I always had an interest in design and Inkscape helped me add another dimension to my work. I learned UI/UX design on it and later began using it to make posters which included artwork I made using code, fusing my interests in coding and design into one. Now I have an opportunity to give back to the Inkscape community as I believe I have developed the technical skills to start making contributions to the project. Below I discuss one features I think would make Inkscape better. Currently Inkscape doesn't have a Perspective Grid System which would let designers have guides on the screen to easily draw realistic 3-D Designs. I recently felt this difficulty when I wanted to design a logo which involved some perspective geometry. We can develop a way for designers to place a 1, 2 or 3 point perspective grid on the screen and be able to change different parameters associated with such grids such as the vanishing points and the granularity of the grid. I have attached a rough sketch of what this might look like. Furthermore, we can have a feature where a designer can have his designs "snap" to different perspectives. To achieve something like this right now we have to skew the drawing which can be difficult. Another cool feature along these lines would be a system to extract perspective lines from raster images by doing edge detection and finding vanishing points. This would let designers use reference photos to create 3-D illustrations easily. I would love to work on Inkscape during Google Summer of Code. Hi everyone, I am about to update the "getting started" instructions for new developers: https://inkscape.org/develop/getting-started/ If you have any further suggestions, feel free to answer. I'd like to consolidate all changes into one big edit because every change needs to be translated. Here's my list of changes: - git SSH -> change to HTTPS (as discussed a few months ago) - "Install build dependencies": replace old "apt-get" instructions with the new script from inkscape-ci-docker. Download and run the script to install all requirements: wget -v https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-ci-docker/raw/master/install_dependenc… -O install_dependencies.sh bash install_dependencies.sh --recommended - "/usr in the example" -> "in the example, it is installed in inst/ inside the source folder" - "Versions <= 0.92" -> remove from tutorial, move to Wiki remove mentioning of autotools, as CMake is now the default - do not mark optional arguments with "[ ]" so that copy-paste into the shell works. Also, omitting some of these arguments (e.g. ccache) will horribly slow down compilation, so they aren't truly optional. Hi everyone, we're looking for people to try and open their legacy Corel, Illustrator and other files with Inkscape 1.0 (or to look things up in the code and tell us if they *should* be working). Previously, these formats were (also) handled via extensions, and uniconvertor was required for it to work. A Big thank you from a long time inkscape user

Hi Everyone, I would like to thank everyone for the hard work you all had during the past 10 years or so. I am an inkscape user since 2007 and I couldn't be more satisfied. This project came such a long way both in the application and in the team structure. I remember we were using mailing lists in source forge. And when our website was not using Django. What makes me the happier is to see that the application now have layers, floating panels, dark theme (spoiler for 1.0 version!), more features, more languages, and it runs on Mac without X11! I got really surprised when I realized that a lot of the feature requests were accepted and even implemented in the project. So thank you very much for caring. And for reaching out. I still feel I don't have a lot of knowledge on the program (yes, this is how I feel) and my time is limited, just like anybody else, but I will do my best to commit to help onboard more users whenever possible. Possible bug in Inkscape 0.92 Export Plot extension

Hi folks I'm emailing the developer list to see if I need to submit a bug report for an issue I haven't been able to resolve through the User Forum. I am using Inkscape 0.92 on Ubuntu 18.04.3 to cut vinyl using a Liyu SC631 cutter, connected using a USB port. Before I updated to Ubuntu 18.04.3 I used Inkcut without any problems. I understand that Inkcut is now deprecated so I have been trying to use the Export/Plot extension instead. The issue is that when I do this the cutter cuts an extra, unwanted, line direct from the last point of the drawing back to the origin, spoiling the item being cut. The problem does not occur when I use Inkcut. Is this a case of "operator error", in which case what am I doing wrong, or is it a bug which I need to report? Any replies gratefully received. Gareth

Inkscape shape to path algorithm development

Happy Holidays everyone! I had lunch with one of the Fontforge developers the other day, Skef Iterum. He's been working on improvements to their glyph outline stroking support, including some algorithmic work that he thinks would be relevant to Inkscape as well. Once Inkscape 1.0 is done and the codebase is open for feature work, he may be interested in seeing if the same algorithmic work could be applied to Inkscape's codebase. He's not conversant in Inkscape's C++ coding conventions (fontforge is C) but has been going through 2geom and livarot and sees some areas for improvement. Marc, I suggested you'd be a great guy for Skef to bounce ideas and plans around with, and offered to introduce you to him. Would you be around to chat with him on IRC some time? Bryce
