Does inkscape use windows GDI for printing?

(1) Our company builds Windows compatible user level drivers for XP, Vista, and System 7 versions. These drivers accepts vector information from programs like Corel Draw and control the following: - Engraving machines - CNC milling machines - Vinyl cutting machines - Generates G codes for most popular CNC controllers -Torch cutting machines - Waterjet cutting machines - CO2 laser cutting and rastering machines Basically, we convert vectors to motion control commands in many different ways. Also, we could similarly use GIMP to accept the information and generate raster control commands for laser machines. Generally, programs like Corel Draw, AutoCAD, Illustrator, and others work with Windows GDI architecture. GDI passes the vector and raster information to our driver and we control machines. The potential is literally thousands of copies of Inkscape and GIMP all over the world. We need to unfill all the shapes, designs, and text in Corel Draw, for example, and make sure that the line widths are hairline (0.001 inch, I believe). The definition of hairline varies with different programs. However, it should be such that GDI is told to interpret the information as vectors. Can our users use Inkscape and GIMP in place of Corel Draws of the world to provide proper info to GDI and in turn to our drivers? We noticed that the version 0.46 of inkscape was able to print to a HPLaserjet type laser printer. Most programs can work with our driver if they can print to laser printer. What do we need to do to make this happen? (2) Does Inkscape work with the following operating systems? - Windows XP - Windows Vista 32 bit - Windows Vista 64 bit - System 7 32 bit - System 7 64 bit (3) This question was first presented to the launchpad inskscape question #82515. Open source projects often push back the release date so that they can stabilize all the features they have added during the development cycle (and even then, some don't make it on time anyway). Those 6 months with "just" Feature A isn't pointless, it may mean hours of work saved, or that the user could accomplish things that he couldn't have otherwise. For some users, the absence of a crucial feature can be just as crippling as a bug. Good thing for the Development version, though that's not a solution for everybody.

Inkscape nightlies PPA

Hello, I set up this repository a while ago, but it broke, and now I think I have it all running again. I'm still running the builds manually so they're not quite "nightlies" but it's been running reliably, so I'm almost ready to move it to an automated script. This is a PPA that contains frequent builds of Inkscape directly from the trunk branch. It creates a separate package called "inkscape-devel" that you can install while you have stable version of Inkscape installed as well. Hardy is still a bit broken, so this is for people on Ubuntu releases 8.10 or newer. https://launchpad.net/~inkscape-nightly/+archive/ppa/ Currently, this will have pre2 plus other patches and translations that have been put in trunk since it's release. --Ted

[patch] Allow inkscape to zoom a wider range

Hi, A program I've written (timechart, see http://blog.fenrus.org/?p=5 ) has SVG as output format. The idea behind timechart is to show what is happening in a system as part of performance tuning, and to do so in a way that is "infinitely zoomable", that is, if you want more information about a portion of the timechart, all you need to do is zoom in and more small details appear. With Inkscape being the primary suggested tool for viewing the output, I currently have a problem in that I can't put the finest details into the SVG, because inkscape just won't allow zooming deep enough to be able to see those details. I made the patch below that bumps the limits on zooming so that users of timechart then can get to the very finest details (if this patch is accepted I'll change timechart to put the details in that I've not been able to put in so far). I hope this (or a change with similar effects) is acceptable for inclusion into Inkscape. I'd really love to see beter text tools and better image links management in Inkscape for 0.48: - An improved text tool with the ability of setting other units than pixels, better inline style edition, break words with hyphenation for better looking justified text blocks. - Better management of image links (manage absolute and relative links properly) and a simpe UI to fix broken links or relink images. Also a proper interpretation of the resolution of the imported images (i.e.: if the document's default units are cm or inches, read the resolution value of the image and scale it to fit the proper size). Those are in my oppinion some weak points in inkscape that should be revised as soon as possible. I think I can wait for the animation features proposed in the current roadmap.

Win2K SP4 uninstall problems with Inkscape-0.47pre2-1.exe

I just tried uninstalling to check whether the uninstaller would delete my theme customizations in etc, lib, and share when it uninstalled it's core files, and ran into the following problems. FYI, the original installation was into E:\Inkscape 1) Installer appeared to be deleting files and at the end of the process pop'd a dialog asking if I wanted to delete "E". Obviously as E is one of my partitioned "drives" I said no. Don't really know what the uninstaller would have done, but this appears serious. 2) Likely due to my "no" answer in (1), it doesn't appear any files were deleted by the installer. Note that the original install did not go smoothly as I first tried to have the installer install to a non-empty directory containing my theme customizations. Once the installer squawked that it couldn't install to a non-empty dir, I manually deleted my customizations (while the installer was still running) and then was able to get the installer to continue by clicking the Cancel button (I think) many times until it continued. It may be that the original installation snags are to blame for. However, this is an example of why I initially avoid installers like the plague until they prove that they will not degrade my system. Please, please, please continue to provide the 7z's at the same time as the installers :) I'll check out the next release of the installer when it comes out to see how it handles installing to an existing dir with theme customizations. Vista Home Premium SP2 uninstall problems with Inkscape-0.47pre2-1.exe

Similar to the email I sent regarding my Win2K SP4 box, I'm having uninstall issues on my Vista system using an administrator account. The issue on Vista is that after uninstall, it doesn't appear any of the Inkscape core files was deleted. Worse yet, it left the shortcut on my desktop but then Vista refused to delete the shortcut giving an error that said that the shortcut was no longer in "C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop" and refused to delete. As many things appear to fix themselves on Windows by our friend The Reboot, I did, and it solved the unable-to-delete-desktop-shortcut issue. Don't know if the Inkscape core files would have then been deleted (would it have left my theme customizations intact ??). Don't know what the issue is, but maybe the uninstaller needs to trigger a reboot in order to not cause these problems....and please don't kill off the 7z's in favor of installers. Jon

Remapping CNTL key.

Hello, I use an alpha-grip (http://www.alphagrips.com/ ) instead of a normal keyboard and this makes it very hard to perform a CTL-click operation. I tried remapping the CTL button using xkb (KDE's keymapping tool) but the settings did not translate to inkscape because (I think) it uses its own keymapping file "default.xml". How might I remap the keyboard under inkscape so that pressing the 'g' key gives the same function as pressing CTL used to? Then I could 'g'-click rather than "CTL-click". Is this possible or is programming necessary before this is possible? I could not find this information on the wiki. If it is there please just point the way. Thanks.

PNG Compression

Hey there, I just wanted to point out that the "crunching" done on our pngs produces files that have forced alpha channels. Obviously if the image needs transparency, no harm there. However, for things that should have no opacity (such as screenshots), it can end up bloating them more than they need to be. Also, I found something that compresses better than pngcrush (however, it is MUCH slower). It's called "pngout", it's cross-platform, it's free, but it is not open source. I'm going to be re-compressing all of our screenshots with it because the results are much better (imho). However, I want to make sure that we get someone with IE to check that they view fine there before proceeding. They do load okay in Opera 10, Firefox 3.5, and everything else that I checked. A comparison of the 0.47 "spiro" screenshot was as follows: 355726 - Version currently on server 349063 - Saved from GIMP with the unnecessary alpha channel removed 337597 - Compressed w/ pngcrush (brute option) 327638 - Compressed w/ pngout (RGB color option) 28k is 28k... better for serving and receiving. In the end, doing this to all of our screenshots will probably add up to quite a bit. Fixed point arithmetic in libnr causes pixel offset at large zoom

Hi all, As reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168384, bitmap pixels appear slightly offset when nearing the maximum zoom. I found out that this is caused by the fixed point calculations in libnr, for example in nr_R8G8B8A8_P_R8G8B8A8_P_R8G8B8A8_N_TRANSFORM_0(). This is easily fixed by increasing the fixed point precision from 12 to 18 bits on line 42 in libr/nr-compose-transform.cpp, but if we do that then our headroom will become quite small. Can we switch to long long instead of just long? Or should we go to floating point math, and accept the speed penalty (if any)? Or should we leave things as they are? Someone must have though about this before ;-) Diederik

I'd especially like this tested with graphics tablets to see if the updated GTK version (not the newest, but newer) fixes that problem with them not working as extended input devices. Little bug in i18n

Hi, I'm testing and debugging my translation on the inkscape-0.47pre2 version and I found the following: When I apply a filter to an object, say "Wrinkled varnish", the menu option appears correctly translated as "Barniz arrugado", but when I select the object, on the status bar I see the description of the object, for example:* "Elipse; **filtrado (Wrinkled varnish)* en capa* Capa 1*. Pulse......". As you see, the name of the filter does not appear translated here. Windows installer change request

Just downloaded Inkscape-0.47pre2-1.exe and am trying it out. Please consider modifying the installer to provide an option to allow one to install in an existing directory that has files and subdirs. The use case for this request is that I customize the Inkscape theme on my systems and therefore have content in etc, lib, and share subdirs. I think a "safe" solution is to provide an "Overwrite!" button in the dialog that pops up when you try to install to a non-empty dir. Keep the "Retry" and "Cancel" buttons and default to not allowing one to install to a non-empty dir, just provide us of those who have existing customizations the option of continuing the installation without having to waste time copying the customizations to a temp directory and then copying them back. Hey All, First off, I am sorry for those who this change may break the build for temporarily (possibly win32 & osx, but hopefully neither). If you've built with the whiteboard flag in the past, I'm sorry, but it is advised to make clean and build again without the flag as it no longer exists. As discussed previously, I have gone ahead and removed the whiteboard configure flag prior to the release of 0.47. For those who don't know, this was done because the whiteboard has not worked for some time, people still ask how to make it work, distro's build packages with the flag, and a number of other related issues continually arise. In other words, it will save us a lot of "user support" time. Hopefully one day someone will take the time to properly fix things so that it is more robust and far less fragile than it was. Until then, it would be appreciated if the flag is not added back into trunk. For the record, the flag was mainly commented out in this commit, the only piece that was actually deleted was 2 lines in configure.ac's echo statement. Those were lines 1011 & 1012: Enable Inkboard: ${with_inkboard} Enable SSL in Inkboard: ${with_inkboard_ssl} By the way, yes, this is also an indication that I'm back and will continue helping us to push to get this released as soon as we can. Hi, I've traced the problem with the broken feImage filter primitive (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/382313 ) to a problem with lib2geom. More specifically, Geom::Matrix.inverse() returns an incorrect matrix. HTML 5 and Xforms support may yield future benefits. In the end, the progression of the web and related technologies will allow for greater improvements in functionality and implementation. Spiro LPE causing hard inkscape/DE crash -> trunk r22133

Hi, I've been experiencing a hard crash whenever I try to use the spiro LPE - the symptom has been around for at least 2 weeks now, my last confirmed build was trunk r22133. I've tested on : Debian sid - kde4.3 - doesn't crash kde for me, but someone else has reported it doing so - gnome 2.28 - crashed gnome as well for me Ubuntu 9.04 - gnome 2.26 - didn't crash the DE, I got a traceback[1] I've tested the 0.47 pre2 built for windows by ChrisMorgan, spiros are fine there - Can anyone confirm this issue is not just me/my packages? OS X compile help needed

A friend is trying to compile Inkscape on OSX 10.5.8, but since I never used macs before we're stuck and would appreciate any help. PDF export not working in SVN???

I can't seem to export to PDF using the version of Inkscape in SVN (no errors, but also no PDF file...). I've attached one of the files that doesn't export for me. I'm using a clean build of Inkscape from a recent revision (under Windows Vista). If someone could confirm (or not) that the attached file does not export to PDF that would be great.

Hi folks, I see a continuous build and test system has been discussed before, e.g. http://code.google.com/soc/2008/inkscape/appinfo.html?csaid=D8D99A1DF8E5D1F7 http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TestSuite-blueprint http://kaeso.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/inkscape-047-tentative-release-plan-a… but I don't see any results page online. Has there been any movement on setting one up? As you know, it's a great way to avoid surprises; it's great to be able to catch problems early and just revert the commit that caused them. Hey all, We're in the final stretch! Given that I am the only Release Warden, I will have to modify a release rule if no one objects... this is the Release Wardens only can commit rule. I would like to extend the ability to commit to buliabyak and JonCruz during this period to ensure that I won't slow things down too much. Translators, please work toward finalizing your translations for this release. Packagers, we should hopefully have a pre2 tarball soon (yes, that means you're getting an email Ted)... when we do, please package things at your first opportunity so we can ensure that any potential packaging issues are ironed out. Would anyone like to volunteer for fixing make distcheck? Last I was aware of, it was failing. I'd like to see us branch on Sept 1, and hopefully release about 2 weeks after that. Fedora 11 now has .47pre(0) in the regular repository so everyone running it has received it in upgrades (why such an early beta in the main repository I don't understand but that's a Fedora issue...) - however, the text editing dialog is really broken in this version which gives Inkscape users on F11 a bad experience and impression. So it would be helpful for Fedora packager to update the repositories to the pre1 version. Of course, text editing is still not right in pre1 but at least doable. Better yet, is a pre2 being prepared ? Meanwhile, when going to the .47 download page - only the windows versions are visible up top - but exploring further the mac and linux versions are all the way at the bottom of a long page. Shouldn't they all be in the same place ? (maybe Windows users just don't know how to scroll down :) Anyway both website and sourceforge page could use some clarification. If not being worked on, I'll try to hack on this.

PNG Export directory

Hi, Prior to recent changes if one exported a PNG without specifying a path it would be saved in the same directory as the SVG. Now it gets saved in the home directory (in Linux). I don't think that this is desired. I would almost never want the PNG to end up in my home directory. This is causing a significant interruption in my work flow as I have hundreds of SVG's that have the PNG export name set without a path (inkscape:export-filename). Can we have the original behavior back (without breaking, of course, the new support of relative paths)? Thanks, Tav

I notice on the website http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?M=D the current windows version is 22040 but it is an exe file but creates temp files that I cannot use to overwrite my current development version. Is there one around that is in zip formant so that I could extract the contents into my current inkscape development version?

this is a follow-up to LP Bug 415079. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/415079 I'd like to propose a patch to deal with occasional (multiple) circular loops in the Spiro Spline LPE. The patch consists of a re-application of a common clamp which is normally applied to the angles, but which appears to need to be re-applied at the final stage of the calculation. I've tested this offline in a standalone calculation to confirm that it works. The case of the empty status bar/notification region...

Hi, I just noticed that the status bar, aka notification region is often empty. I click on the Rectangle tool and see the text "Drag to create a r". I then move the cursor over the text, expecting to see a tool tip with the full text of how to use the Rectangle tool but all the text disappears. After doing this a few times I realized that passing over the swatches causes the status bar to show the name of a swatch (new feature in 0.47); when the cursor leaves the swatch area, the Rectangle text doesn't reappear. This makes it impossible to read the full text in the status bar for any tool (except the Tweak tool, where the text is restored) unless one make an end-around the swatches (difficult in full-screen mode). Can this be easily fixed? Tav

Nodetool problem?

Hi, with svn rev 22105 (and 22073) I get unexpected node selecting behavior. So far I can reproduce: * draw first path * draw second path * switch to node tool * click on first path * click on some node Result: two nodes instead of one get selected and the mouse cursor does not switch to normal arrow when hovering to toolbar. Inkscape also froze (100% CPU for some minutes until I killed it) twice after such incident. rev 22044 is fine, so the fix for bug 168780 might have broke this. Thomas

Inkscape scripting API (Draft)

I would welcome any comments or criticisms, the interface is very much still up in the air so any suggestions, from small changes to major issues, would be welcome. I would particularly like to hear if people think that this would potentially support the ways in which they use Inkscape, or whether there are use cases this doesn't address. If there are lots of uses that this interface does not support, additional interfaces geared towards different users could be added. (In fact there was originally one more interface than there is now, see document_new() for details.) If you like the current API (in general) feel free to suggest additional functions or functionality. Finally, how would you like to see this extended? Dbus has proven to be quite responsive and robust for this application. How would you build off the basic platform of the Inkscape application interface? The need to do this is essentially, to provide a cross UI between all major media-related software. SPEventContext stops receiving button1 press/release events

Hello, I don't really understand what I am doing wrong. I have a button on the toolbar of the connector tool (InkAction) that, when gets pressed, basically creates a new knot that follows the mouse pointer. At this point (after the button is pressed) SPEventContext (for the connector tool) stops receiving any button1 press/release events. Other buttons press/release, pointer motion events are received. I don't even have a clue for where to start debugging, please help. Thank you. Preparing for Feature Freeze

Hey All, It appears that the Frost is nearing completion, and the Feature Freeze will be setting in soon. Given this, it's probably a good time to start putting together a list of release blocker bugs, as well as discuss if any features need to be pruned due to them being incomplete. Better hrefs

Hello all Currently we have some handling for hrefs (in the form of Inkscape::URIReference). It provides some signals and callbacks, but doesn't do everything that I would like it to. To be specific, there are several places when solving the following problems efficiently would be a great thing: 1. Given an object, iterate over all references to it. 2. Given an object, iterate over all objects it refers to. Point 1 is useful for all sorts of things: marking objects for update, compensating clones, deletion, vacuum defs, etc. Point 2 would allow to remove 80% of clipboard code, and implement robust ID changing and clash prevention (which means, one that doesn't have to be updated whenever a new href-like attribute is added). Here is my idea. We define a three-way smartpointer that looks like this: class ObjectRefBase { ... SPObject *obj; ObjectRefBase *next; ObjectRefBase *next_ref; }; template <typename T> class ObjectRef : public ObjectRefBase { ... }; template <typename T> ObjectRef<T> const &getRef(T *obj) { return static_cast<ObjectRef<T> const &>(*obj); } The 'next' and 'next_ref' pointers form a singly-linked cyclic lists. Each SPObject contains such a smartpointer (by protected inheritance: 'class SPObject: protected ObjectRefBase, ... {') that can be accessed using the getRef function, which is a templated friend of SPObject and returns an ObjectRef of correct type. The header of both lists is the pointer contained in the referenced object; it has 'obj' set to itself. 'next' allows us to iterate over references to this object, while 'next_ref' - over references contained in this object. The constructor might look like this: ObjectRefBase(SPObject *owner) { if (owner == this) { obj = this; next = this; next_ref = this; } else { next_ref = owner->next_ref; owner->next_ref = this; obj = NULL; next = NULL; } } If this is the embedded instance from protected inheritance, the the first test will be true and both lists will be initialized as empty (an empty cyclic list is represented by the header node having a next pointer pointing to itself). The assignment operator is as follows: ObjectRefBase &operator=(ObjectRefBase const &other) { if (obj != NULL) { ObjectRefBase *cur = this; while (cur->next != this) cur = cur->next; cur->next = obj->next; } next = other.next; other.next = this; } If the reference pointed to some object, the function walks the list and removes the reference from the linked list of the previous object; it then inserts itself into the linked list of the new object. The destructor works similarly: ~ObjectRefBase() { ObjectRefBase *cur = this; while (cur->next != this) cur = cur->next; cur->next = obj->next; cur = next_ref; while (cur->next_ref != this) cur = cur->next_ref; cur->next_ref = next_ref; } Now we can iterate over the references to an object like this: for (ObjectRefBase *cur = this->next; cur != this; cur = cur->next) { // do something with each reference to this object } And over references contained in an object like this: for (ObjectRefBase *cur = this->next_ref; cur != this; cur = cur->next_ref) { // do something with each reference stored in this object } Testing whether the object has any indirect references is dead simple: this == next. Same for checking whether this object refers to anything: this == next_ref. The owner of a reference can be retrieved in linear time (by walking next_ref until we encounter next_ref == obj). All this of course can be encapsulated into a nice STL-like iterator interface which provides some extra type safety not present in ObjectRefBase (for example, we know that all ObjectRefs which we can reach via 'next' point to the same type). Handling CSS properties with URI references that are not members of the object is easy as well: ObjectRef doesn't need to be a member of the owner for all this to work. There are no boilerplate attach() / release() methods: the assignment operator of ObjectRef takes care of everything. If walking the lists during reassignment and destruction turns out to be a performance problem, we can make both lists doubly-linked rather than singly-linked, where a node can be removed in constant time, at the price of 2 more pointers stored in each reference. Fast owner retrieval additionally requires storing the owner pointer. This gives 5 pointers of overhead, so for 10000 references on a 64-bit machine we get 390KB of overhead - should be manageable. I thought about a trick that can be used to implement constant-time erase on a cyclic single list (the iterator actually points one node before and we use cur->next->value to get the value), but it can't be applied here. Why this is better than keeping pointers to the references in std::list or std::vector? - no memory allocations when adding a reference = better performance. - removing a reference is much simpler, because finding it in the list is not needed. - signals can be put in the ObjectRef class. - simple and elegant implementation. Live path effects - better XML representation

While rewriting the node tool I necessarily had to look into path effects. Live path effects are currently seem to be represented by a single svg:path that has information on what the original path looked like in the inkscape:original-d atribute, the applied effects in another attribute, and additional. I think this is not very flexible, because it does not allow for example nondestructive boolean operations where both operands are other path effects. What do you think about this representation: 1. A live path effect is represented by an svg:switch element. An Inkscape-specific attribute can be added to it to simplify implementation, but it is not really necessary. 2. The first element in that svg:switch is an inkscape:path-effect element that contains all the information about objects it was generated from. Shape parameters are represented as inkscape:path-effect-param elements that can contain anything including svg:use, svg:rect, svg:path, another inkscape:path-effect etc. This could allow very nifty things like live boolean operations. It would also simplify the node editor, because it could just operate on the invisible children of inkscape:path-effect while being completely unaware of path effects. As bonus points, path effects created from rectangles, circles, spirals, etc. could preserve the editing capabilities of those shapes. 3. The second element would be an svg:path that contains the result of the path effect, style properties, etc. 4. When opening the file in Inkscape, it would only look at inkscape:path-effect and recompute the fallback svg:path whenever something changes. When opening in another SVG viewer, it would only display the svg:path. 5. To handle live boolean operations, there would be an additional parameter for shapes that says whether they are 'live'. If a shape is 'live', all boolean, offset, etc. operations would create path effects instead of paths, similar to how linked offset works now. In fact, the destructive versions could be implemented as a combination of creating a path effect and an object-to-path conversion. 6. Path parameters would accept any SPShape. There would be a separate type of parameter that accepts a group of shapes. To convince an effect to accept an object group as a parameter, a special effect called Flatten Group would be provided - it would convert a group into a path effect suitable for use as a parameter for another one, and could optionally use a clone rather than the original for flattening. Now some use cases: 1. To create an outline of some collection of objects, we create clones of them, group them, apply Flatten Group and then Offset. Result: whenever any of those objects is moved or modified, the outline updates. 2. The sun and cloud example in http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Lpe-blueprint would be dead simple: create the circle and the sun ray, use pattern along path; create a clone of the cloud, make it 'live', create an offset; then apply a live subtraction between the sun and the clone. Updating any of the original shapes will now change the appearance. (As a related note, compensation on moving should not be a global property, but a property of the clone! As demonstrated here, we want the invisible clone used for the path effect to move with the cloud, but we want other visible clones to stay where they are when the original is moved) UI changes: The LPE stack would need to be changed into an LPE tree like the layer dialog. The path effect tool would allow the editing of various parameters using control points and the node editor; selecting an item in the tree would cause its editing controls and toolbar to appear. Live path effects would be created from a menu rather than from the tool, like dynamic offset. Internal changes: SPLPEItem would be removed, and SPShape would be used as the type of object that can be used as a path parameter. What do you think? I think when done this way, path effects (or maybe they should be called Vector Effects, because they're not really limited to paths?) provide a generic vector equivalent to filtering. This means they could become super-powerful, and in fact the main method of editing complex drawings. There would be some problems with legacy live path effects, but it can be dealt with at document load. PS I just noticed this is somewhat similar to the vector effects proposal in SVG 1.2. It might be wise to plan ahead and make it easy to optionally store some path effects as an SVG 1.2 vector effect. From *.o compilation to Inkscape.exe

Hi, In Build.xml there is three main steps: 1. Compiling *.cpp into objects 2. Linking *.o into static libinkscape.a 3. Compiling and Linking "Main" with libinkscape.a Actually I'm using the IDE Code::Blocks (with the same mingw compiler) to debug inkscape and I'm able to do the same things that the Build.xml does. My problem are these three steps, I would like to create Inkscape.exe without having to create a static library because with the -g parameter linking in (2) and (3) took so long !!! So I tried to bypass the "libinkscape.a" creation but it's not working. Someone already did this before ? Yann.

removed files from trunk/share/extensions still present after svn update/make/make install

When updating Inkscape to the most recent SVN revision I use: | svn update | make | make install and then build the application bundle for macosx. When files are removed from trunk/share, like recently some extensions (in rev. 22049), those files still exist in 'Build/share/inkscape/extensions' and are not removed when I do 'make' and 'make install' after 'svn update'. Do I have to manually clean the Build/share directories when updating from SVN, or is there a make target that specifically does this instead of the overall 'make clean'? The issue has come up before with packages for win32 which included long gone extension files. On a side note - the build date (shown in the about screen) also doesn't update with every make/install/package cycle - though the revision number is always correct. tia, ~suv

STL Containers related question...

Hello all, I have an issue with STL std::map. Here's a quick description. I have a member in SPConnectorContext structure that is a map: std::map<SPKnot* , ConnectionPoint> connpthandles; Having the following code in a function produces a sigfault: cc->connpthandles[knot] = it->second; where cc is a pointer to SPConnectorContext. I have also defined a local variable std::map<SPKnot*, ConnectionPoint> cph_clone; and the following instruction executes all right cph_clone[knot] = it->second; It seems that somehow the connpthandles map gets scrambled or improperly initialized. GSoC 2009 - Nearing the end

They will technically have up until the 24th to get the finishing touches on things as far as grading is concerned. Please talk to your respective students to ensure that you can provide the best mentoring possible for the time they have left and to see what the community can do, if anything, to help them succeed. Measure Path extension and transform attribute

Hi, I'm trying to fix bug #308183 (Measure Path text shifted when used with a copied object, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/308183), related to measure.py extension: "Some objects (stars, spirals, circles, but NOT rectangles and freehands) have a transform attribute (translate) when copied. When using Visualize Path>Measure Path, the text gets this attribute, which is thus applied twice (one on the object and one on the text). That's the reason why the text appears shifted on the canvas." Does someone know why this transform attribute is copied from the original shape to the generated text? Removing it in measure.py resolves the bug and doesn't seem to break something else (the text is linked to the object with xlink:href). But it's in the code from the beginning... Thanks! -- Nicolas

Hi, Would anybody object to removing EPSI support? It does not work in SVN. It probably would not be hard to fix. 0.46 uses the program ps2epsi to do the conversion. However, with programs like OpenOffice directly using the vector PostScript code, I am not sure how useful it is to have the bitmap preview. One can always use ps2epsi by hand. Tav

Plugin proposal: Simple UML class diagrams using UMLet syntax

Hi, first I would like to thank you for your work on Inkscape. That tool is quite powerful and impressive. The only thing I miss is a simple way to create class diagrams but I know it's not particularly the job of Inkscape to provide that. UMLet (www.umlet.com) is a very simple UML diagram editor which allows you to describe your classes and draws the shapes automatically. The description looks like this: MyClass -- id: int /name: String/ -- f(int, String): char I would like the same feature within Inkscape which is much more powerful. What I have in mind is a plugin which: 1- adds a new kind of shape 2- have a text area to enter the class description 3- do *not* allow the shape to be edited through handles but only through the text area What do you think? Proposal to move translations into Launchpad

Hi, I've been testing Launchpad's web interface for translations and want to propose a migration to it. The available tools are: - Original text. - Translated text. There is a shortcut to copy the original text to start translating. - A checkbox is in place so another person reviews it later. - Info like comments, variables and return characters are shown clearly. - You can browse thru the strings and translate one by one. - It gives automatic statistics for every language. - It is integrated in theres of Launchpad. I like this tool because I won't need to have anything installed and can work in any computer provided it has a net connection. One thing I don't know is how well changes made on svn will be handled. I hope there will be no conflicts between edits done on the web and on svn. Someone has tried this? Regards.

Hey folks, I'd like to build inkscape from near the top of tree, does anyone have an svn revision number (or branch name) for pre1? As somebody else noted, the tip is currently a bit broken. I have a nice batch file that automates the downloading of dev tools etc. and the checkout of source code and the build; I'm using it to benchmark windows vs. wine for compilation speed. (And as a stress test for wine.) Also, does anyone ever build inkscape for windows with visual C++ express? Thanks, Dan

vers .47 pre 2: I found some continuing problems with the text editing dialog. Font types and sizes are not recognized after selecting the text object (this seems to be the same problem that existing in .46 (but worked fine before that). If someone is working on this, I'll be happy to work with you to resolve and test this.

Win32 NSIS installer

Hi all, Today I decided to take a look at the NSIS installer for Win32, and decided to optimise it. It currently uses a macro and function for reading options from the command line. Since then, FileFunc.nsh has had added to it the GetParameters and GetOptions macros, which make the code inside the installer obsolete. I was amused to see that the option-reading code was made by (a different) Chris Morgan in 2004! For your assurance that I hopefully know what I'm doing, I have had lots of NSIS experience, mainly at PortableApps.com, where our launchers and installer are in NSIS. NSIS is an area I can help in, unlike the one I wanted to do more, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/398603, which I'd like to fix but can't really. I also optimised readability and similar through the use of LogicLib's logical code structures. I cleaned up the language sections significantly, using a single macro rather than a section for each, containing a macro. In all of them, polng was equal to lng, with the exception of Japanese which had, incorrectly, jp rather than ja for lng. lng was only used for "..\..\inkscape\*.${lng}.txt" anyway - a mask which matches no files for any language. I'd propose that that line be vanquished as it's not used (historical?). In the meantime, I simplified it into one argument for the two. More on languages later. While doing this I found about half a dozen minor bugs, all of which I've fixed. Starting at line 1382 (old), that set of things had the conditions the wrong way around, so it would only print the detail if it was *empty*, rather than if it was something... utterly insignificant, but a bug :D More importantly, all the code around that section was inefficient, I rearranged it to make it more efficient. Also the deleting HKCU\.svg[z] thing was looking for the wrong thing, fixed that. The biggest bug I found was that single-user installations didn't work (at least judging by the code). The shell var context had been formerly set to "all", and the all users section set it to "all" and had a bit of code which wouldn't ever get executed. I got around this the easiest way, which was just to create an unshown section before it to SetShellVarContext current. All in all, I took it down from 1559 lines (47,874 bytes) to 930 lines (34,534 bytes) (60% of the lines, 72% of the filesize), shrunk the installer output by about 25KB (0.07% :P), fixed some bugs and made it more readable in the process. Now for some discussion on what I reckon having looked at it. Languages: I can optimise those still further, just thought I'd send round what I'd got so far. In particular, I want to change it so that no languages are installed by default; this would speed up installation on Windows exponentially - due to the LZMA solid compression used, each language takes an inordinate time to install. I think I can fix that up too, but I'll need to experiment on it a bit. Moving the files first should help in the technique... I'll try it out and report back. However, back on the main topic, I want to change it so English is not shown on the list (it's really pretty meaningless, it's an empty section... and the SectionGroup is "Translations" of the interface, English is pretty much a given), and so that the only language which is installed is that which the installer is running in. I can do that easily enough. Possibly also the MUI LANGDLL should be displayed to let the user choose the initial language. Presets: we've got the SectionIn 1 2 3 bits all over the place, but aren't using the presets at all (any more I guess from commented out code). I think they should be added back, that way you can have all languages in full, the suggested one in optimal and none in minimal. Also I think that quick launch and desktop icons should be on by default. Start menu: currently this is forced on, in a set location, which isn't very nice. We should use the MUI STARTMENU stuff. I also think that a lot of the DetailPrint bits should be cleaned up to either be removed or so they can be more useful. The welcome and finish pages should get their own images, I'll make a proposal for it. Also the header image should get the new logo; likewise I can do that. Right, I think that's enough for now, though I've probably forgotten something I was going to say, and missed a bug or two I fixed. -- Chris Morgan <chris.morganiser@...400...> I don't need a quote in my signature. Boost.Intrusive

Hello all In my GSoC project I need to represent nodes in a linked list. The requirements are: 1. Obtaining an iterator from the value should be a constant time operation 2. Ownership semantics should be similar to boost::ptr_list - that is, objects are owned by only one container and deleted when erased, though there are special functions that allow transfer between containers and releasing an object from a container 3. The list must have a 'closed' flag that determines the behavior of 2 functions that retrieve an iterator to the next and previous node: If it's true, they wrap around, and if it's not they behave like regular ++ and -- on iterators. Initially I thought about std::list + std::tr1::unordered_map of pointer to node -> iterator, but this is absurd. Then I created my own NodeList class, which worked well enough, but I feel that implementing all the operations is reinventing the wheel. I could use Boost.Intrusive (specifically boost::intrusive::list) to satisfy 1 and 2 out of the box and 3 with a small amount of work. However, I can't find what version of Boost we currently depend on. Boost.Intrusive is a header only library that was released as part of Boost 1.35 in April 2008 (there are no runtime dependencies, so the only possible issue is whether developers run recent enough systems to have it available). It is available in Debian Lenny, as a backport for Etch, and in Ubuntu Hardy LTS. Is it OK to use it? Regards, Krzysztof Kosiński

Extracting a saturation map with SVG filters ?

I can't figure how I could extract a saturation map (as a greyscale image) with SVG filters. My idea is using it to replace any hue of an image with only one like it's done with cyan in the joined png created with Xara Xtreme Linux Edition. I am searching for a long time already but without success. Perhaps not possible. In Xara I only put a cyan rectangle above the image and apply the "Hue" transparency type. I was able to synthezize all Xara's color effects but this one. ivan

Latest version of pstoedit 3.45 is from September 2007. Maybe the helper_extension could to be changed like the one used for the 'print preview' which doesn't prompt for PDF output options either (or does 'print preview' use Postscript output?). Using 'org.inkscape.print.ps' instead of 'org.inkscape.print.ps.cairo' doesn't work although it's defined in src/extension/extension.h. Or there are other cross-platform converters available that can do it in one step: svg->dxf (besides Alvins enhanced dxf_outlines.py extension)? ~suv

Yeah, those were my terrible designs from last year, but I'm glad that at least you liked them ;) I have attached SVG file of the design that I'm currently porting to Drupal. The template needs some really awesome header graphics, which I'm unable to design myself. Probably there are many nodes in your paths, in which case Inkscape only considers the convex hull. That's because snapping many nodes might take too long. Obviously, this shouldn't be an issue when snapping only bounding boxes; on top of that, it should say "convex hull to grid intersection" in the tooltip instead. So I'm not 100% sure what's going on here. I'm pretty sure though that Inkscape usually looks at the individual boundingboxes, as you want it to; just draw three rectangles, select them all, and try to snap their bounding boxes. Anyway, I will fix this if you want; it would be helpful if you could send me your svg file for testing. Diederik

I do not want to distract from the possible solve Chris's Drupal offer may provide. Though I've been distracted myself with the prospect of doing an svg based forum design. I've seen so many excellent things in Inkscape. I have been provoked into working on a web-store for Inkscape files. (A separate thread). ..Back to the forum. So: ------------------------------------- Such a design would use as much Inkscape as possible/applicable. Certainly a delightful prospect! Should present reasonable forum expectations. Should be as backend-agnostic as possible. Which could mean the use of xml + xsl => svg 'portions'. Be using a browser target priority of 1) Firefox 3.5... ... see Browser notes below. Use animation where applicable, fakeSMIL <script> if necessarry. There are significant javascript hooks in Inkscape so that xml+xsl transformations can be small routines in javascript. Browser notes: ------------------ Firefox + fakeSMIL = ok. Opera = ok. Safari = ok. IE + firefox plugin = ok. (http://www.savarese.com/software/svgplugin/). (Really, if an ie user is not ok with this, then can download Firefox portable). Pragmatically speaking, interest in Inkscape implies readiness to be .this. flexible. There will be some script isues. Some can be avoided by using x-browser 'modules'. eg For xhttprequest, xsl transformations. Auth notes: -------------- OpenID as an Auth agent. Others to follow. Other technical mechanics: --------------------------------- Small data references & text can be 'POST'ed to an OpenID'd session. XML + XSL can be xhttpRequest 'GET'ed.
