Hi all, Max found something that is important to know. Apparently, gcc accepts "false" as a value for a pointer. So it is possible to write: test_function(Test *t) ... test_function(false); without triggering a compiler warning/error. This hid a problem after refactoring a function method, resulting in a crash. Inkscape Releases

Hey All! Since I was a release warden for 0.46 and will be the one moving forward for 0.47 as well I'd like to touch base. First, it seems like patches intended for 0.46.1 have died down submission-wise. I plan on beginning to get caught up on Launchpad with regard to those in an effort to move things forward with it. Does anyone have any requests or things to comment on with this? Second, is it wrong to assume that we won't be shooting for 0.47 this year? I'm definitely not pushing for it. I'd rather see everything get nicely polished... besides I almost never use release versions except for bug testing. ;) Cheers, Josh

New devlibs stuff

People using the win32 devlibs will probably want to svn up, to get the new Gtk libs. I believe that this is the version that was needed for the printing fix. I started a new build on the server to see if we get lucky and the autobuild works ok. It compiled and runs fine on my laptop here. bob

Hello, The latest win32 build from modevia: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape19808-0809060128.7z crashes when you try to import either a jpg or a gif file. A png is imported fine. OS: Windows 2000 SP4 Steps to reproduce: - Launch Inkscape (create a new empty document) - Select Import from the menu - The standard Windows dialog opens - Click on a jpg or gif file name Result: Message. Runtime error, Inkscape encountered an error and will now close (or something) Crash. If you already have an open document opened with stuff in it, the import dialog doesn't make Inkscape crash, but it does nothing.

Max value for colors < 255

Hi, I have GTK+ 2.13.6, and had problems compiling Inkscape 0.46, until I found this patch http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15113774/gtk-clist.patch. Inkscape compiled pretty well, but now the color values are gone wild :-P I can't raise any of the color components more than 245. Even the default colors (in the color bar) are semi transparents (the alpha channel is at 245). I can write the HTML color "FF0000FF", and then the drawing turns solid red. But in the "fill and border" pannel, the values are at 245 (for red and alpha). If I try to change one of those values, they return to theier "correct" values (254), the image turns transparent again, and the HTML color shows "F50000F5". Microsoft Expression uses a profile shape method that is just like what Bulia suggested. The width equals the path length and the nodes along the profile shape equal the distance away from the centerline for the brush object's width. The LPE could be given three pieces of information... bottom most item is the stroke path, then brush object and then the profile path. Could something like Microsoft's Expression live vector brush effects be created for Inkscape's LPE? If you have not seen what it does, Expression allows you to create a path and stroke the path using another object where the width of the stroke along the path is based on an contour path (think XY chart) where the width (X) is the location along the path to be stroked and the height (Y) is the width of the stroke at the point along the path. Ideally, the stroke object could be made up of multiple paths with various characteristics. For instance, you could create a stroke object that mimics a water color brush stroke. - Tony

question regarding wishblade robocraft support...

Sorry for posting here if the user list if better. And sorry about the subject if it has been talked about before. I couldn't get sourceforge to add me to the inkscape user mail list and sourceforge was timing out on all my archive searches with no results. --- I remember reading that there was a patch or something to inkscape to support wishblade and robocraft users. Has that been integrated into the inkscape application? Is that what the DXF is all about? Wishblade users can not use DXF directly (needing the robocraft software to import DXF and change it to some sort of native (and maybe proprietary) GSD). Is there a way to get inkscape to save images in GSD in order to simplify the process? Ideally, I would prefer to skip bringing up the wishblade application. In my set up, I do all my work in linux (GIMP/INKSCAPE) and only the plotting in Windows. If I could do everything in linux it would simplify the flow of work greatly. Has anyone figured out how the craftrobo is communicated to in order to use it with common open source linux plotting software? Better yet, has anyone figured out how the wishblade has been crippled in order to use it with common open source linux plotting software? ...thanks

sorting out PS/EPS/PDF export mess

It's always bad when the UI offers two ways to do the same thing without really explaining what's the difference. It's equally bad when UI uses some meaningless techno jargon such as "cairo" :) Unfortunately 0.46 was released still in the middle of a transition period which made both these evils inevitable. Now that we're in 0.47, however, I would like to address this issue by switching all of PS, EPS, and PDF output to cairo, removing the builtin Inkscape exporter, and purging the mentions of "cairo" from the UI. As a matter of fact, this has already partially happened (not sure who did this). Right now both PS export options work via cairo and produce identical output. The Inkscape-native PDF export is nowhere to be seen. The only exporter which still uses native code is EPS. However, since 1.5.2 cairo can produce EPS files too, so this can all be done in one place now (closng several EPS export bugs along the way). The only downside is that it will require cairo >= 1.5.2, is everyone OK with that? By the way, the latest cairo 1.5.12 finally fixes the bug where zooming in too closely in Outline mode produced messy broken lines. Now everything is neat and clean. LPE tool

Hi, Honestly, I'm as much happy as much puzzled about the new tool called LPE tool. All across source code it is called an LPE tool, which probably means it's supposed to do editing of LPE params on canvas or draw LPE. It does both, but is restricted to geometric constructions only (and not all of them), which is why it probably has a "Create geometry constructions" tooltip. So the question is conceptual: is it supposed to do more than it does now and cover all possible LPEs or is it only geometry constructions related? Alexandre

hi! In latest revisions a new LPE effect appeared - Lattice deformation. But it hasn't been working properly these days. I propose to create a new tool - exactly Lattice deformation. This tool (idea) is in Adobe Photoshop. This tool would be very helpful. Currently we can bend a shape in a few way, but only in one direction. This tool would enable to bend the shape in many directions. I sent my mentor (Ted Gould) two reminders for filling in the final mentor evaluation (one on Aug. 22 and one last friday) and it seems he hasn't started the evaluation yet. And I also haven't heard from him. I did get a reply to a (much) earlier message on the 24th stating that he had some e-mail trouble. Font-related crash with chinese environment (#261475)

Hi, a serious bug was reported in debian, as inkscape is almost unusable in chinese environments (http://bugs.debian.org/487623). Forwarded to our bugtracker, the crash seems to be triggered by a particular translation in the open file dialog, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/261475 but happens in other situations too and is related to font handling. I've made a patch to prevent the crash, but I wasn't able to find what's the real issue between pango and inkscape with LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8. Some more details and the actual patch are available in the bug report. I'll commit the patch in a few days, just because I'd like someone else more familiar with libnrtype/Font* code to inspect what's really going wrong there instead of just fixing symptoms... Hiya! I have been using inkscape more and more over the last year, and appreciate the fine work you all have done. Thank you. I'd like to join in on the fun, and have found myself really craving spell checking support in inkscape. I have poked around sourceforge, archives, and summer of code project information, and it appears that some work on this has been done, but it isn't complete. So my question: what is the state of spell checking support (wrt to development), and where do we need to take this to make it as functional as one would expect? yes, we can start a thread there. But we should keep updating people here at inkscape-devel about what we are planning for the contest. I would pay $150 for half of the first prize if we decide that it will be a vinyl cutter. Anyway, I heard that maybe mozilla guys still didnt answer maybe because there is a mozilla meeting this week and everybody may be busy attending speaks and meeting mozilla people in person. Maybe we should wait to see whether we get some Mozilla funding after the event is over and this guys go back to "processing e-mail inbox" mode. Node tool issue in nightly builds?

Hi guys, Had reports from the inkscape forum that people were still seeing crashes in the nightly builds in the node tool, which seemed to be fixed in the SVN builds I was making, just tried the latest (Inkscape19750-0808250930.7z) and have confirmed that it does crash for me still. show/hide other layers like in GIMP

Hi all! Currently in SVN wersion a new feature concererning the layer menu appeared. Namely: show/hide show/hide other layers. In my opinion this is a half success. Layer menu should have features like in GIMP and its comfort. Sometimes I have to switch off visibility of great numer of layers. This is not comfortable doing it by hand. In GIMP using Shift key we have opportunity to hide/show layers. Shouldn't it be in Inkscape? One combination: Shift+click on eye icon, shows/hides others; Shift+click on padlock icon, locks/unlocks other layers. None menu is needed. Hi guys, Been battling with trying to create an output extension today, and am having real trouble with the script I'm trying to call not having parameters that I've got in the command bit of the inx being passed to it. my inx has the following <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <inkscape-extension xmlns=" http://www.inkscape.org/namespace/inkscape/extension"> <_name>gmail file storage</_name> <id>org.ekips.output.gml</id> <dependency type="extension">org.inkscape.output.svg.inkscape</dependency> <dependency type="executable" location="extensions">gecp_ink.py</dependency> <output> <extension>.svg</extension> <mimetype>image/svg</mimetype> <_filetypename>Write svg to a gmail account(*.svg)</_filetypename> <_filetypetooltip>Export to a gmail account</_filetypetooltip> <dataloss>false</dataloss> </output> <script> <command reldir="extensions" interpreter="python">gecp_ink.py username:Inkscape_Files password</command> </script> </inkscape-extension> The script expects the username as arg 1, password as 2 and the filename as 3. all its getting is the temp filename. bug in the layer menu

hi guys! First, I want to apologize for my English. I'll try to explain everyting clearly. So, some time ago, I found a bug. I'll describe it now. Please repeat with me. Create a new layer without typing a name and then click add. figure 01: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8720/01cz8.jpg Left mouse button on layer name (probably, the name will be called layer1) and call it anyhow. I called it "test". Please note that the name in the status bar still remains called layerX, not "test". figure 02: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/7800/02bh2.jpg Next click on eye or padlock icon and note that name of the layer returned to layer10 (in my case). This won't happen if we name layer typing in window dialog. I've been testing it in the past but didn't know where to notify it. Also my language is a barrier so please forgive me for that. cheers!

Code duplication

Hi all, there is a large chunk of code (~ 130 lines) that is essentially duplicated in both dyna-draw-context.cpp and eraser-context.cpp, namely the function fit_and_split(). The two versions only really differ in a few lines, but they also contains a couple of #ifdef switches that are used for debugging. The problem is that these are also dependent on the file (to wit, #ifdef ERASER_VERBOSE and #ifdef DYNA_DRAW_VERBOSE). I believe it would make sense to melt these two functions together, but how can this be done while at the same time respecting the #ifdefs? Is there a kind of #or directive? Max P.S.: It just occurred to me that the two contexts might share other code, too (although I haven't checked). Perhaps they could even be merged to a larger extent.

F9 + KDE 4.0 (and 4.1) + Inkscape (missing color picker widgets)

Hello, My apologies if I'm asking in the wrong place (this seemed like it might be a bug, so I thought I'd try here). So I installed inkscape-0.46-2.fc9.x86_64, and it's exhibiting unexpected behaviour in the color-picking widgets (in the Fill + Stroke dialog). Basically, they're not displaying any color: http://imagebin.org/24367 (RGB) http://imagebin.org/24368 (HSL) http://imagebin.org/24369 (CMYK) The 'Wheel' color picker, however, seems just fine. Is there a specific package dependency that I need to reinstall to get these color pickers to work (this is in Fedora 9). I also tried compiling from http://inkscape.modevia.com/svn-snap/inkscape-19664.tar.bz2 (build 19666 didn't seem to compile), but got the same result with the color pickers. Can someone help point me in the right direction to solving this? Thanks. --Mike

Speaking of devlibs... I just committed Cairo 1.7.4 to devlibs, along with Pixman 0.11.8. I know that it is an unstable version, but we probably need to experiment with this one for development purposes, since it has user font support and other text improvements. I did test it. I would say that it ran fine but it didn't. It had a crashing bug in win32_surface code, but Adrianj magnanimously fixed it immediately and it runs great now. Thanks! Elimination of SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP

Hi, during a couple of boring compilation phases I recently decided to use my multitasking capabilities :) to eliminate quite a few instances of SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP. These eliminations should be harmless because they mainly involved passing in the desktop variable from the caller. Anyway, please keep the change in mind and report any bugs this might nonetheless have introduced. E.g., I encountered one place in widgets/toolbox.cpp where the obvious change broke things (it's not committed yet; I'll have to investigate this further since it looks like there is bug hidden somewhere else). Since I wanted the changes to be safe I didn't touch the floating dialogs stuff. It's probably better if someone with more knowledge in this area (Gustav?) tackles this. Max

TikZ and PGF exporter

Hello everyone, For some time now I have been working on an Inkscape extension for exporting from SVG to TikZ/PGF format for use with LaTeX. A PGF exporter has been requested before[1], but as far as I can see no one has worked on this yet. The extension is not feature complete yet, but the code is available at: http://code.google.com/p/inkscape2tikz/ If someone are working on a TikZ/PGF exporter I would like to know. Maybe we can join forces. This is my first extension, so I would appreciate any comments. It is currently implemented as an effect to allow selecting which curves to export and allow clipboard export. I should probably also provide it as an exporter as well. What parts of the code should be tested?

As part of my GSoC project I'm also compiling a list of (currently untested) parts of the code that could definitely use a few (unit) tests. This list will include a few of my personal favourites, and I'm working with gcov and svn logs to determine some "objectively" interesting parts of the code. Now my question to you is: What parts of the code do you consider to be in urgent need of testing? Obviously the most straightforward answer is "all", but - again obviously - that is also the least interesting answer :)

Path representation

Hi all, I've been in a little discussion with Jasper and he has found a problem with the new path representation. A story about what now works, and what now does not work. Please check what I state here. It is how I have understood the SVG standard, but I could well be wrong. On purpose, Jasper and I discussed obscure paths. == Explicit closing line segment == A: "M 0,0 L 1,1 z" B: "M 0,0 L 1,1 L 0,0 z" These two paths are not identical in SVG. When adding midpoint markers, path A will not have a marker at (0,0), but path B will. Inkscape 0.46 did not distinguish between these two paths. 0.47 does distinguish them, however after nodetool editing, path A is converted to path B. I think this is a bug and it is better to always output path A after nodetool editing. It will be harder to remember whether to explicitly state the closing segment without showing multiple nodes on-canvas etc... == Line segment without moveto after closing path == C: "M x1,y1 ... z L x2,y2" D: "M x1,y1 ... z M x1,y1 L x2,y2" These paths are also not identical. I think this has to do with the stroke of a path being continued for path C after the closing "z" ; instead for path D, a new stroke is started after "z". Inkscape 0.47 is not able to represent the difference between these two paths, converting path C to path D. Unfortunately, 2geom's path representation (at the moment) is not able to represent path C. I can try to change things, but it will be an ugly hack probably... == Only moveto's in a path == E: "M 0,0 M 1,1 M 2,3" Such a path is used for paths where only markers should be shown, without stroking the rest of the path. Inkscape 0.46 discards this path data; 0.47 correctly handles this kind of path. Regards, Johan

Hi, I'm going to write a tutorial for the calligraphy tool I implemented in Karbon, given that the tutorial of Inkscape is done very well and the tool is very similar I thought it would be silly to rewrite it from scratch. It isn't too clear under which license the tutorial is licensed so some clarification would be greatly appreciated. The xml file generating the tutorial contains the line: <!-- Copyright (C) 2004-6 bulia byak, buliabyak@...859... and josh andler, scislac@...1050...> The parent directory also contains a COPYING file with the GPL, my best guess is thus that that's the license of the tutorial, but I would like a confirmation. Often I have considered halting the win32 builds. :-) There are some almost nightly binreloc-enabled Linux builds here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/btool/?C=M;O=D But since they are purely for testing, they do not provide the required library dependencies. People can download their own. How to interactively replace control widgets in toolbars?

Hi all, I'd like to implement a toolbar which is comprised of various subtools. These subtools are represented by icons in the left half of the toolbar. Depending on the currently active subtool I want to display certain control widgets in the right half. How can I interactively replace these control widgets when the user switches subtools? Another question: While certainly there should be at most one subtool active at each time, there are situations when I want none of them to be active. If I understand correctly, EgeSelectOneAction is not the right thing for my purpose because it always requires exactly one option to be active. Is there another kind of action which I can use or do I need to implement my own? Also, apparently OSX builds can only be made on an OSX box. How nice it would be if someone could find a box for us to set up for nightly trunk OSX builds. This hopefully resolves my issue with the concept of "randomness" which wasn't clear to me exactly how it should act (even when I was convinced that I wanted such parameter). The mechanics for the rest of attributes (S, L and O) and dimensions (rotation and scale) is exactly the same. Note that when randomness is set to 0, the value is always |(max-min)|/2 (it's an absolute value for cases where min>max). I've to revamp a bit the toolbar for this tool, since with these changes some of the buttons can be scrapped (like scattering radius). It lacks a way to select an original for spraying it. I thought about a button "pick original" in the main toolbar. When pressed the cursor changes to the normal arrow to click on an object/group and from then on that's the original (in clone mode all of the clones are linked to it, in the other two modes the object is just used for spraying but not linked to the sprayed items). Any (better) ideas? Another issue: clones inherit attributes so is not possible to set these parameters. Un less there is a way to make clones where the only feature inherited is the shape. Regards.

mass conversion to Geom::Point

Hi all, I just started mass converting to Geom::Point, but then it struck me that this will conflict with many changes other people are creating. So I think it is best not to mass convert. It is the same with whitespace things. Let me know what you all think. NR::Point contains cast methods, so Geom::Point and NR::Point are interchangeable in 90% of the cases. It would help a lot if you'd just change NR::Point to Geom::Point in a line you are editing. Thanks! Johan

Test suite directory structure

I've been talking to Johan about the directory structure used by the rendering tests (in gsoc-testsuite/tester/testcases). The following directories currently exist: - basic: a few tests that test Inkscape's SVG rendering capabilities (four of them are really quite "basic", the fifth is perhaps not very "basic") - bugs: some tests from bug reports - complex: currently just an LPE test - svgtestsuite-1.1: a selection of tests from the W3C SVG test suite If anyone has any suggestions for restructuring basic/complex, that would be great, they seem a bit awkward. The original idea was that basic just tests general SVG features.

I just uploaded the GUI for the advanced options: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Image:Spray-tool-ui02.png Is a bit over the top and some of the combinations may not have a lot of sense in the end. Some explaining: - The checkboxes allow the change of the attributes. Is one is not activated it means the sprayed items will have that feature the same as the original, unaltered. In the case of spacing (which is not an attribute) I don't know how this should work. - Scale allows any value, positive or negative, as this will allow the motif to be bigger or smaller than original. - Rotation (and Hue) are always positive and the min can be higher than the max. Why you ask? because if this is not allowed, some configurations will be unavailable. If you want items to be rotated between 15-345º (a margin of 330º), you would use min=15º and max=345º. But what if you want them rotated on the other sector (345-15º=30º)? In that case you would use min=345º and max=15º. - X and Y spacing are there but I'm not sure of what units to use. Should it be a % of the stroke width on each axis? What behavior do people expect for spacing? I can't make my mind right now. - The color variation is activated independently for the stroke/fill for each HLSO attribute. With the intention of making the color selection easier and faster, I've placed two color swatches (on the min and max columns) so the user can call the color selector and pick the color or insert values manually. Again, for the same reasons, the min value can be higher than the max. - I'm not exactly sure how "use lightness from background" and "tablet pressure" does interact with the rest of the settings. My idea is that these two should vary the attribute between the set limits. But randomness doesn't make much sense when using a tablet or the lightness since you would want that attribute to be controlled and not random. Maybe the Randomness spinbox should be deactivated when "use lightness..." or "tablet" are checked. Regards. PS: I think my HD is dying :(

Inconsistency of rotate/flip buttons behaviour

The rotate left/right and flip horizontal/vertical buttons are so close to each other on toolbar but behave different on multiple selected objects. When selected multiple objects and rotating, all objects rotate around their centre. To have them rotate as one, you first have to group them, rotate, ungroup. When flipping multiple selected objects, they already flip as group and see no option to flip these by themselves. I think these should behave similar. Most of other programs treat selection as group, and this is what I first expected of Inkscape. But considering the fact that grouping and rotating is quite easy, so having these actions both per object would make these actions more general and therefore more useful. And to mention, I would only file a bug, no actual coding yet, Inkscape codebase is a lot like Chinese for me (refering to something ultimately complex). Also, thanks for this good program Mattias

POVRay and JavaFX output

Although I really didn't want to do more work on those two outputs, I was curious how 2geom's transforms worked, so I spent the day updating POV and JavaFX output. Ok, I think that -this time- I am finished with the javafx stuff, and I'll let someone take it from here. Here is how our svg Tiger renders in javafx: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32_inkscape_org/jfxdump.png I tested the POV output on POVRay 3.7a, and it seems to work fine. It is recoded to be recursive rather than iterative. Some POV users needed it to preserve groups, so this should help. bob

Hi, I've just started to write a blueprint for a Spray tool. You can find it here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SpecSprayTool I need input on the following topics: 1) I propose that 3 parameters can be controlled (scaling, rotation and color). Every parameter has limits and a randomness to fine tune how the variation works. I need to know your thoughts about this and any nuances that might appear while coding, or on the UI... which leads me to the second question. 2) Having so many boxes and buttons on a toolbar is going to take a lot of space. I suggest to have the settings placed like in the UI example and where 'Other options...' is put another button that unrolls a window with the variations controls (check boxes for activating scaling, rotation and color variations, limits and randomness). I think is more intuitive to adjust the maximum affected area with the Width parameter, and let the Scatter radius be a % of it but going towards the center (i .e.: always Width radius>Scatter radius). Hello, I hope this list is the correct one for this kind of question: Has anyone managed to get http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/PythonEffectTutorial to work without major changes? It failed for me both on a gentoo system and on a pretty vanilla Ubuntu 8.04 box. I don't know if I will find the time to edit the wiki page according to the current lxml behaviour, but I might give it a try. Additionally Ishmal(I think) said on irc/jabber that lxml might not be used in the future anymore anyway. Now for the list of problems I encountered: * Simply making the file executable and putting it into ~/.inkscape/extensions/ is not sufficient, it won't find inkex there, but no problem, simply add import sys sys.path.append('/usr/share/inkscape/extensions') # or another path, as appropriate for your installation to the top of it. A minor problem. * All the getElementsByTagName, getAttribute, createElement,... methods are unknown to lxml, at least in the versions here (1.3.6). Inkscape returns the python error message ending with: File "/home/dhornun/.inkscape/extensions/helloworld.py", line 32, in effect svg = self.document.getElementsByTagName('svg')[0] AttributeError: 'etree._ElementTree' object has no attribute 'getElementsByTagName' If this is not a problem on the distributions' side, those can probably be fixed by adapting the code to reflect lxml's current API. Hi, for a while I have been wondering what the 'mode' variable in SPPenContext means. It seems that it can assume the two values SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_DRAG and SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_CLICK. But now I discovered that its value is read from preferences-skeleton.h where it is set to _DRAG, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change that. Can anyone enlighten me what _CLICK is useful for and if it is settable at all? Thanks, Max

NEW: Paraxial mode in pen tool

Hi, apart from the recent "zigzag" mode there is now a "paraxial" mode in pen tool. In this mode, the user can only create straight line segments that are parallel to one of the coordinate axes. Normally, each line segment is drawn perpendicular to the previous one. The direction of the line segment being drawn can be toggled with Shift. When clicking on the start anchor, the path is closed with an L-shaped segment (the direction of which can also be flipped with Shift). Let me know if you have any issues with it. [1] Max [1] Known bugs: When creating the initial segment with Shift, the second segment is parallel to the first one instead of perpendicular to it (although all subsequent ones get drawn correctly). Moreover, when closing a path the final segment is sometimes drawn slightly slanted.

W3C SVG test suite available as rendering tests in SVN

A large part of the W3C test suite, stripped of all its text elements is now available as rendering tests in SVN. It does not include anything that relies solely on text, animation or scripting (at least I've tried to make sure it doesn't). Compared to the latest test suite compliance results on the Wiki there either have been quite a few regressions or I've been more strict. cutter control discussion

I have not seen any posts on this topic for a week or so. I would like to help but I am terribly slow to get things done. I am just wondering if we could hammer out what needs to be done so I can add it to my "to-do list" volume 3 I could buy a cutter in July or August and I should be able to finish reverse engineering the command protocol sometime in the fall. I know there are different formats used to send information to the cutters, would it be good to work on a more robust DXF export option too? I don't know the first thing out GSD, does does someone want to work on this ? I am unfamiliar with Inkscape internals, if I provided the commands could someone integrate this into Inkscape? Or do we even want to do this? Is there a better way? Thanks-Patrick

Memory leaks?

Hi all, 0.46 on Hardy and XP: * Opening and closing a document over and over seem to increase the memory usage. * Exporting an SVG document to PNG increases the memory usage for each export. I made a quick attempt to test opening a SPDocument and then destroying it immediately. First of all I don't know how to properly destroy a document created with sp_document_new. I checked the Inkview code where they use delete, but seem to get a number of asserts from the gc-code. Are these known issues or am I missing something here? Best regards, /Henrik

Positioning of curves (and only curves!) differs from reference

While looking the W3C test suite I found that in Inkscape rendered versions of the files all curves seem to be (very) slightly offset compared to the reference image. And strangely enough this does not seem to hold for straight lines... The first few color tests (with all the circles) show this behaviour for example, and especially color-prop-01-b is interesting as it shows both curves and lines. Can anyone confirm this? Any ideas on why this is so? And who is right?

As part of my activities on the W3C SVG Interest Group, I'm working on accessibility. As a simple starting point, I decided to focus on getting <title> and <desc> editable in Inkscape. It seems that sas already had submitted a patch to turn this feature on in the devel version of Inkscape. I've tried to fix a couple bugs with this implementation. One of them required a (for me) rather large patch that I think needs reviewing: Bug 249445 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/249445 I also submitted a quickie tonight on Bug 254850 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/254850 if anyone can commit that. Finally, I opened Bug 254857 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/254857 for which I need some UI guru to take a look at. I think it should be possible (and easy and intuitive!) for the user to add a <title> element to the root <svg> in Inkscape (as per SVG spec), but I'm not sure the best way to do this in the UI (perhaps replace File > Document Metadata > Title?). I'd almost want to suggest that this be a mandatory step before saving, but I don't know how user-friendly that would be. Thanks, Jeff

Is there something against using ${env.DEVLIBS_PATH} as the path to devlibs in build.xml? This way the path only needs to be set in mingwenv.bat (which is already done anyway) and it wouldn't have to be changed back each time I (or anyone else who has devlibs elsewhere) modifies build.xml.

Patterns: display of unit cell

Hi all, The knots for a pattern applied to a shape used to be scaled by 0.5, such that the displayed knots where on the border of a quarter unit cell. I have removed this as I found it confusing and awkward now with the snapping of those points while trying to get a good checkerbord fill at the grid's spacing. Perhaps someone can tell me why this factor was put in? Thanks, Johan

Hello, I'd like to add a 0.46 OS X 10.3 download link to the website. I've checked out inkscape_web and know which files to edit, but after reading http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WebsiteEditing I wanted to make sure I edit inkscape_web/download/ files. properly to keep the encoding correct. If I simply use 'vi' which is configured to support multi-byte characters, is that sufficient to keep these files happy? Also, It looks like I can simply add links to the non-English files inkscape_web/download/download-*.inc, but if I should avoid those, what is the usual procedure for requesting web page translations? 'Lines only' mode in pen tool

Hi all, I seem to remember a few recent requests for a "lines only" mode in pen tool (can't find the related emails or bug reports offhand). [1] For my LPE work I had implemented this a short while ago anyway (if for different reasons), but so far it has only been used internally. Now I added a new button to the pen toolbar to make it publicly available. You may want to give it a try and see if it is useful. All it does is prevent you from making curves: each mouse click automatically addes a new line segment, regardless if you are dragging or not. Personally, I'm not too convinced that it's of great value but other people may have different opinions. If it turns out to be useless, feel free to ditch it again. :) If you want to keep it, you are welcome to design a more beautiful icon and/or find better descriptions, too.;-) Max [1] This one seems to be along these lines, too, but it's very unspecific: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/253166

Hi, that's my first message for this list, so let me introduce myself. My name is Silveira Neto, I'm a brazilian student, last semester in computer science. I'd like to say that I'm a happy Inkscape user, pleased to see all improvements made recently. I'm also a developer that uses a new, free and open technology for creating RIA (Rich Internet Applications) called JavaFX. JavaFX is heavily graphicaly based and it's elements resembles much SVG elements. In fact, the main creator of JavaFX created a tool<http://blogs.sun.com/chrisoliver/entry/javafx_svg_translator_preview>that translates SVG to JavaFX. I'd like to suggest a plugin for exporting Inkscape drawings to JavaFX, so developers could draw with Inkscape, export and program the logic with JavaFX. That extension just would have to export the drawing to a raw text .jfx file. The syntax is quite simple<https://openjfx.dev.java.net/learning.html>and I can help with it. I guess that Inkscape extensions are made in Python, right? I'd like to know where I can find more documentation about writing Inkscape extensions, I know a little bit of Python, I could try it. As JavaFX and SVG graphical entities are similar (like shapes, paints, gradientes, paths, etc) you guys think that is possible to make such plugin for Inkscape? In this case filters doesn't seem to achieve this although some of the pre-made filters give a "3D", relief or emboss effect but not like my mockup. I actually think the emboss tool could be made with filters. In some way, the bevel tool would be like the 3d box tool: both create a group editable with the tool, or you can edit the elements of the group sepparately if you ungroup it. Regards. I am very glad this is being discussed! Here are my opinions from what I've been able to do thus far using Inkscape and my vinyl cutters: I would not bother with any format other than HPGL. It is a standard for desktop and large format cutting plotters - not just Graphtec. (Graphtec has some proprietary formats, as do others...) I have a 15 year old 24" Roland plotter and a less than week old Graphtec 48" plotter ( vinyl cutters ). The exact same file can be cut by both machines with no alterations other than the original setup. Graphtec defaults to it's own version - GP-GL, this needs changed on the control panel to standard HP-GL. What I do right now is: 1. Make the drawing in Inkscape 2. Copy what needs cut to the clipboard 3. Open a new file in Inkscape 4. Paste clipboard data into new file 5. SHIFT+CTRL+D to access properties of new file 6. Click the "Fit page to selection" button 7. Save file as "newplot.ps" 8. in terminal, enter: ./graphtec.sh < newplot.ps 9. plotter starts and cuts perfectly, absolutely ignorant it is being controlled by open source software! The file 'graphtec.sh' is a modified version of a script found at: http://www.3x6.nl/inkscape_hpgl/....html It uses hpgl-distiller - a program that can be downloaded from: http://pldaniels.com/hpgl-distiller This sounds complicated, but once it is set up, it isn't much worse than any other vinyl cutting software. I've used plenty of them! I will gladly help actively work on and test this. I also have plenty of other ideas to help inkscape become a full featured vinyl cutting solution.

Inkscape PDF import from the command line

Hi, According to the latest release notes from the wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes047#PDF_import_from_the… Inkscape 0.47 (upcoming) will support importing PDF from the command line. According to the wiki the first page is imported. Is there a feature planned to do page by page import (e.g. --page=1, --page=all, or --page=1,3,6)? SVGFonts dialog

I have been thinking about user interface and I agree with you that glyph kerning is much more present than other stuff. But I am not sure if we should put all font-face attributes on a dialog. That would be too much stuff. And probably not very useful for the users. Think about stuff like the "ideographic", "mathematical" and "hanging" attributes. It seems to be stuff that would be passed to pango so that it can decide whether to use or not this SVGFont instance when inquired about a closest match for a font substitution (supposedly it didnt find the perfect match installed on system). I guess this stuff wouldnt be much important at first glance. Since when my project got stucked at pango, I have been feeling kind of lost in a new huge set of user interface TO-DOs, which I do not know what to address first. I am feeling a bit pressured by the deadline and the feeling that even having put some effort on the codebase, my code is still not very useful. I would like to ask you, what should I focus now, since we have only 12 days until GSoC deadline. I think I cannot do anyting great such as glyph editing (be it on or off canvas) until then. Juca PS: If anyone else wants to give me some advice, I sugest compiling and installing cairo from git and then compiling inkscape. That would trigger the conditional compile of my work, which cannot be compiled without a new version of cairo (which has user-font support). Hello, In Inkscape 0.46+devel, built Jul 16 2008, on Windows 2000, the Node tool is broken: You can't select the type of node at all if no handles are shown on the node. (i.e. select a newly drawn node and apply a type to it). When handles have been dragged out of the node, then you can select the node type in the toolbar. This is a change of behaviour from before. Crop & Transparency Tools

Hi everyone, I've got a couple of thoughts I'd like some feedback on. Clippaths and Masking are both existing functions we support but Cropping and a transparency tool are features that dont currently exist. There is a process that must be done to achieve those results which I think is redundant work 90% of the time, not to mention hard to learn for new users. So here's my proposal. [[ CROP TOOL ]] Is anyone interested in defining the interaction and rendering of a cropping function? My assumption would be a tool that helps the user create a <rect> (that is rendered as a inverted filled outline. The tool would instantly draw the rect > selects objects according to the setting > groups that selection (if crop selection is specified) and finally applies a clippath. We would need display tricks mentioned like rendering a 50% transparent black fill for the area not being cropped during the process. Rotating the crop could be done with the control point usually reserved for rounding a rect ( as I dont think we want to introduce rounded clippaths when we are talking about something simple like cropping. also I think this should be have three modal settings in the toolbar: - crop entire document, - crop selected objects (which would require grouping before applying the clippath) - crop current layer ( which would clippath the layer group) [[ TRANSPARENCY TOOL ]] We could use a similar approach to create a transparency tool. In one action we would create a white rect matching the bounding box of the selected object(s) and group + mask to uniformly reveal transparency features similar to xara anyway what do you think? Overloading ambiguity

Dear Inkscape developers, I'm trying to compile Inkscape-0.46 on OpenSolaris-200805 with the SunStudio tools. Unfortunately the process is not very smooth. NEW: LPE Interpolate

Hi all, I just committed a new LPE: Interpolate. Does something like the python interpolate effect. You can also draw the interpolation trajectory: the path along which the intermediate paths are drawn. 1. Draw a path consisting of 2 subpaths. (draw a line, then draw another line while holding shift. the 2nd line will be added to the 1st, the result will be an SVG path with 2 subpaths) 2. Apply LPE Interpolate. The reason I made this interpolation between the 1st and 2nd subpath is that it seemed relatively easy to do this, instead of interpolating between whole sets of paths. Hmm, now that I think of it, it isn't all that much more effort actually. In any case, the UI is much easier to work with for subpaths than for 2 paths. I could also do this probably: 1. Draw an interpolation trajectory 2. Apply LPE 3. Copy-paste first path as "Path A" parameter Copy-paste second path as "Path B" parameter Let me know what you all think is best, maybe we want both, as in the case of bend path and pattern-along-path. ("Interpolate subpaths" and "Interpolate along path") :) Johan P.S. The LPE choose dropdown box is getting really huge now. Who wants to make mockups of what is a better system for applying effects?

Fix for latency warnings

For those seeing the recent event latency warnings, I've just put in a fix ** (inkscape:27965): WARNING **: Event latency reached 3.290566 sec The main cause of extraneous warnings is a slight difference between the clock used for the GDK event marking and the real time. On my Mac, I observed that the skew was of a constant factor, so I added in an option to compensate for that. On my system the value was 0.9766 (and thus on my system after running for 85 seconds Inkscape would believe a latency of over 2 seconds had crept in). We'll probably need to investigate this a bit more, but getting that factor in should let people with false warnings get things calibrated and see only good ones. If you need it, look for the new setting under the misc pane.
