make distcheck ?

Is this still a stumbling block? I can get 'make check' to work, but 'make distcheck' fails with a message like: In file included from ../../src/test-all.cpp:483: ../../src/color-profile-test.h:8:26: test-helpers.h: No such file or directory It seems to have unpacked the tarball, configured and 'made' it, and is failling at doing a 'make check' on the fresh tree. 1. Is this what 'make distcheck' should be doing? And is it necessary? 2. It looks to me as if 'test-helpers.h' is not being put into the .tgz I am working on the basis that either this file should be so included, or 'make distcheck' should not be requiring it. Grateful for any advice or suggestions. It may be that there is some part of the invocation of 'make distcheck' that I am not doing properly ... Ben

Of the frequently reported "known problems", one bug is especially annoying because it is caused by nothing else but a call to a standard GDK function. For some reason, this call triggers an assert if xorg.conf has a "Composite" extension enabled. For details and pointers, see this bug's comments: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=1457003&group_… In brief, the trouble is caused by GDK calls from sp_dash_selector_menu_item_new in widgets/dash-selector.cpp In Inkscape, this code did not change since Sodipodi times. It may be that we use the GDK functions in a wrong or deprecated way, or it may be that GDK itself is broken. This is the only place these functions are used in the entire codebase, and it's a bit embarassing to crash because of such trivial thing. June issue of Linux Format magazine

I just picked up the June issue of Linux Format magazine (Issue 80). Their cover this time is on "Libre Graphics", and is coverage of the LGM. Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus and Xara each got two pages. Also, Inkscape people can be seen teeny-tiny on the pic of the lecture hall on the initial page, and then recognizable later on the Xara pages checking it out. Oh, and I was personally very excited to see it, as it's the first time I've really been interviewed for anything significant. :-) Oh, and coming up, I hear that issue 81 will probably have a good article by Jon Phillips, covering many things.

bugs repro for 1499971 and 1497837

Can anyone out there repro either of these problems? One is the libgc-6.7 problem, the other is with the libsmooth theme engine. I *think* it would be helpful to at least warn on these conditions. For the libgc problem, my guess is that a call to gettext() would return null. If anyone can verify the problem and then at least verify that we can detect it by gettext's misbehavior, that would be handy. For the problem with the engine, I *think* we might be able to detect it if we can query for some known module name. Using the gtk_rc_find_module_in_path function might do the trick.

Inkscape hangs when printing isn't configured

Hi ! I have tried "Inkscape pre2" on my Kubuntu Linux computer ( with KDE ). Printing is not configured on this computer, because i have no printer on that one. I have started inkscape from the commandline to test the newest pre2 autopackage. When i tried to print, the print-window and inkscape freezes. I waited a minute for a message window to appear which would say:" there is a problem with printing." After killing inkscape, i saw on the commandline the message: "lpr: error - unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable" . I think that is a bug. FYI, I just joined inkscape-devel and I'm building on Mac OS X/PPC. There are some redefinitions of preprocessor macros in path-prefix.h that break the build on my platform (CREATE_GRADIENTSDIR, CREATE_PALETTESDIR, CREATE_PATTERNSDIR). It's pretty clear that most of the paths that now point to locations inside of the application package should probably instead point to the "Application Support" directory in an individual user's home folder for application-generated data. It's less clear to me whether it's a good idea to move a number of the other resource directories outside of the app package simply to be more "mac like" (probably more trouble than it's worth). I'm planning to spend part of the weekend working on a little extension for some linguistics features (syntax trees), but with builds apparently slightly broken on OS X (one minor change necessary), I'd be more than happy to contribute a patch, work with the Mac module owner, and test. In theory, there's no reason you couldn't put every single target up on the same build server somewhere. In practice, you'd probably at least have to be running opendarwin to build with Apple's GCC. Problem is, fink doesn't support universal binaries. I guess what this means is that to get to a universal binary you: a) build with fink on an Intel box, then a PPC box, then merge with lipo b) switch to darwinports (allegedly support universal binaries) c) curl the packages and script a universal build from source (rewrite fink) I'm not really sure if fink is considered to be part of the Inkscape build process. Am I going out on a limb if I stray from the build instructions? Is it better to stick with fink because it provides a distribution channel? --David

Filter effects - blur test

Here is the first test on rendering filter effects. It applies constant gaussian blur to every rendered object of type NRArenaShape. This is mostly to test the speed of rendering filter effects in real time. This test does not apply blurring to all types of objects - that would result in blurring the object, blurring the layer the (already blurred) object is on, etc. The biggest problem at the moment seems to be transparent areas appearing, when an object is drawn in several smaller pieces rather than in one piece. Guess the object needs to be drawn on a larger buffer thet is larger than the result will be - thus allowing blurring to take in to account the pixels outside the actual area, we are rendering to. -- Niko Kiirala niko@...1267... http://niko.kiirala.com/

NEEDED: Win32 User for testing

Hi all, If you are on Windows and and have a little extra time this week, you can help Inkscape out considerably. There are several _bad_ bugs that are going to afflict Windows users of our new Inkscape release, that we may have a decent chance to eliminate. However, unfortunately our developers don't have access to Win32 machines, so cannot easily test their fixes to make sure they've fixed the issues. If you are on Win32, and are comfortable installing and running extremely cutting edge stuff (including running gdb), you can help. We need someone who for the next week or two can install the latest code and test out a few bugs we're working on. This is a great way to contribute to Inkscape and to directly make it better for Windows users, so if you've wanted to do that but felt that your technical skills were a bit light, this may be a perfect opportunity. Hi, I am testing pre1 on WinXP SP2. Am I the only one to experience problems with escaped HTML characters in the tooltips? (see attached image for an example) Also, I don't know if it is reproducible on Linux systems. Can anyone else reproduce this, so as to file a bug report? - Spyros Blanas

I get: ../../src/extension/implementation/script.cpp:30:26: error: registrytool.h: No such file or directory Now, rwst has finally beaten it into my head that this message means I need to add something to a Makefile*something*. First question is which one? Am I correct that autogen.sh uses Makefile.am (including Makefile_insert) to generate Makefile.in which is used by configure to create Makefile? So I should add registrytool.* to Makefile_insert. Next question is where in that file should it go? There are a number of different groups of files. I should also ask. registrytool.h was most recently included in src/extension/implementation/script.cpp by ishmal in revision 12129. But it was originally added to the source in rev 10506 with the comment "new files for win32 only". Is this file now being used on other platforms? NEW: Native PDF export

I have committed the patch by Ulf Erikson that adds native PDF export (based on PS export code). It has many limitations but at least it's better than what we have now, because it does not require Ghostscript and, most importantly, handles transparency. Complex illustrations, such as this one: http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.41-CVS-linux-davinci… are shown quite faithfully by Adobe Acrobat after saving as PDF (though much slower than in Inkscape... and I thought our renderer is the slowest, heh). Current limitations include: no text (check "Convert text to path"), no gradient on stroke, no clipping/masking/patterns, no eccentric elliptic gradients, no bitmaps. I know we're probably going to have at least one SoC student working on PDF export, and I think it will make a perfect sense for that student to work on this existing code to improve it. However, even if the student will choose some other approach (e.g. using Cairo), it will be easy to replace this code. Layer opacity

This got delayed in order to track down and fix the save as ODG crashing bug, but it's in now. Please give it a good workout to make sure it's solid. It's been pending for a bit, but it gives a lot of benefit to end users. There were no main objects in the Jabber room, and even at least one "the main reason I use layers in gimp". It's gotten a good shakedown with GTK+ 2.6.10, so anyone with 2.8.x would be very welcome to finish running it through it's paces. (Oh, and for translators, it did bring in one change of adding "Opacity:" to that dialog)

PyXML missing - bug on 0.44pre1 on WinXP

Hi! I was testing 0.44pre1 build for Win32 and spotted that PyXML issues with extensions (when having installed python seperately on windows) have not yet been resolved. I don't know if there is a way to hack around this (ideas: invoking python with full path, changing PATH variable before execution, installing PyXML on user's machine if not available) but at least there should be a more informative message on what is going on. The current message hardly clarifies anything: "The inkex.py module requires PyXML. Please download the latest version from <http://pyxml.sourceforge.net/>." Average-user questions: What is inkex.py? What is a module? What is PyXML? Why is it required? (Let alone the fact that this installer crashes during installation on my machine and required installation via the command-line) Remember, this is a *release* and there will be plenty non-programmers using it. And I think that such an error will prevent many people from enjoying the work done on extensions. - Spyros Blanas

How do you configure and by-pass the package stuff. My system seems to have everything neccassary to build inkscape. But, since I built a lot from source and Slackware packages they are not in a .pc file so ./configure fails. So, can is there a configure option that will build the make files and let me take care of any library problems by hand? My libs are in what is considered the "statndard" dirs. /usr/lib, /lib, /usr/X11/lib, etc... tj

fix for "disappearing stroke"

As anyone who uses Inkscape for real work knows, stroked shapes are prone to becoming invisible at certain zooms. It's especially bad for complex path, and playing with L-system effect recently made it so annoying for me that I searched for a fix. Which turned out to be quite trivial, so I committed it. This closes at least two bugs: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1244737&group_id=9… http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1254932&group_id=9… and a related bug where a complex path actually disappears (not just becomes invisible) after an offset: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1498546&group_id=9… Of course this change (in livarot lib) is somewhat risky, but in my testing it works well. Very complex paths that would previously simply disappear, now may display certain small rendering artefacts (horizontal lines), but i think it's much better than becoming totally invisible. Please test thoroughly; if you see something bad, especially crashes, I would back this out. For those interested, the reason for this bug was given by Fred in this comment: shape_euler_err = 4, // computations result in a non-eulerian graph, thus the function cannot do a proper polygon // despite the rounding sheme, this still happen with uber-complex graphs // note that coordinates are stored in double => double precision for the computation is not even // enough to get exact results (need quadruple precision, i think). So in most cases this error was caused by rounding errors, not by the shape graph really being non-Eulerian (which means some nodes have more in-coming edges than out-coming edges). So I simply removed the check for Eulerianness for stroke shape. My understanding is that even if we hit some shape which is not Eulerian, the renderer will simply do some artefacts but should not crash. -- bulia byak Inkscape. I think I've checked in a fix for the ODG bug [ 1489961 ] Autopackage: crash on save as ODG http://sourceforge.net/tracker/? func=detail&aid=1489961&group_id=93438&atid=604306 However, since it wasn't actually crashing on my system, I'm not sure it fixes 100% of the problem. Can anyone who's seen the crashing first verify that they still have a crash upon saving .odg, and then update to the latest changes and check that it solves all of the crashing? Thanks.

Can anyone out there reproduce bug 1497837? [1497837] crash with GTK+ 2.8.17 http://sourceforge.net/tracker/? func=detail&aid=1497837&group_id=93438&atid=604306 I can see where the final crash point might be caused by a few different things, but running with --g-fatal-warnings could catch the first step in things breaking down and give another helpful backtrace. I was looking over things a little more, and I *think* I know a better approach to solve the warnings. Once I started looking at things, I realized that in at least some of the cases we have an SPObject* we need to end up with. Conceptually that's a GTK+/Glib object, not a C++ one, so we just need to work in the right paradigm My first thought was something like this for sp-flowtext.cpp: void* rawptr = 0; SPObject* source_obj = 0: ... group->layout.getSourceOfCharacter( it, &rawptr, &span_text_start_iter); source_obj = reinterpret_cast<SPObject*>(rawptr); However, Ralf pointed out that using a reinterpret_cast<> itself triggered that warning. After I had that kicking around in my head for a while, I finally realized what I was missing: SP_OBJECT() We need to force an unknown pointer to be one to an SPObject. However, that's a Glib object, not a base C++ one. And we already have that macro to coerce an arbitrary pointer into a pointer to an SPObject. Plus it does all its magic in C-land, not C++ land. So using it should clear up the warnings, and also is the "proper" GTK+ thing to do. However... since I'm only on gcc 3.3 here, can someone else try this to see if it cleans things up on gcc 4.1.x? Hey Mental, Could you explain what the difference is between SPObject::requestModified and SPObject::requestDisplayUpdate? I notice that sp_stop_set() calls the former, whereas sp_marker_set() uses the latter, but looking at the code it's not clear why they are calling separate things... (I'm trying to sort out a fix for bug #1298718) Bryce

Inkscape is already (strongly) dependent on Gtk, and almost on Python, but pygtk would be another dependency (perhaps the help browser can be kept as an optional part, too). Then a few lines of C++ code make possible the interaction of python+gtk with the Inkscape svg viewer widget. All that can be re-coded completely in C++, but that difficults development a lot, and would end up in poorer results for the same ammount of work. Content info is represented by a tree, which nodes are added to that tree from Contributor objects. Each node encapsulates a key, the title of the document, an uri, the see-also stuff and a list of keyword phrases for indexing. Contributor objects are responsible of gathering entries from different sources. So, a Contributor might know about the tutorials, and other Contributor might be responsabilized of scanning the extensions directory for documentation of individual extensions.

crashy fonts on windows

On Linux these fonts seem to work fine. The problem is that now it crashes as soon as you open the drop-down in the text toolbar, because of auto previews. Previously it only crashed if you clicked specifically on that font in Font dialog list. So now Inkscape _seems_ much more crashy. And judging by the number of the reports, this is going to be a really major problem. What do we do? Disable previews in drop-down until this is fixed? This is the easiest thing to do, and of course only a partial solution (it will still crash if you select that font). Or, try to find out what these fonts have in common (something encoding related I guess) and just disable all such fonts. Or, (most difficult) fix this bug in Pango and ship our own Pango dll (as we do) with this fix. Thoughts? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

There, the tutorials, the documentation for user extensions and any other stuff can be grouped together; I know the idea is quite old, but still seems good to me. Ignoring the another-dependency problem, it might be done using pygtk and a (quite easy to implement, as I could note) python front-end for the inkscape SVGView widget. (which can also be used to provide a more flexible ui to extensions, previsualization included).

Hi all, We've hit the point in the release process where no further string changes should be made (except in very exceptional circumstances). This enables translators to reach 100% translation rates. This is also the point where translators should really ramp up translation activity. We currently have 9 languages rated at 'significantly translated', with another half dozen that are nearly to that level. We've posted a news item with the current statuses to http://www.inkscape.org today. Please, if you know someone that knows english and one of the less well translated languages, consider helping them in creating an Inkscape translation for their language! Bryce

So, I'd like to thank you all for your feedback on my griping about the SoC. It was comforting and encouraging. As I've explained, I would still love to be able to commit a lot of time to this project, but my economic constraints are the only thing holding me back from doing so. I was speaking with some open source activists from the GOSLING group here in Ottawa (http://www.goslingcommunity.org) about the SoC fall-through, and they encouraged me to seek funding for my project elsewhere. They made it seem very fesable, and they are very experienced in the world of FLOSS, so I am considering their suggestion. It occured to me I could get funding for this project in two ways (1) provide graphics services, where the deliverables would be images OR (2) provide "value added" to Inkscape, where the deliverables would be code. It seems these two might feed each other. Do any of you have suggestions about to get funding for my project ? I've thought to myself sometimes, "why should I get paid to do this when everyone else is doing it for free ?" I think the answer to that questions is "because I (and others) deserve to earn a living doing something enjoyable and that benefits the public". It occured to me that maybe some of you ARE getting paid to develop Inkscape. Is this the case ? How does that work ? So, in pursuing this goal, I've jotted some courses of action: - rewrite the proposal to frame it more towards end users like graphic design companies and give the reasons why this project should be funded (technical/business/ethical) - search for other official grants - get businesses and individuals to start using Inkscape if they don't already - promote an official "Inkscape endorsers list" (businesses and individuals) on the wiki (and have a web button to acompany it) to develop contacts of those who do use Inkscape - put up my existing stand-alone scripts on sourceforge - expand my demo image portfolio on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wikinator/sets/72057594111379807/) - convince individuals and/or businesses who could benefit from my improvements to Inkscape to invest in my project (one or many ?) I'm not going to be able to get to work on adding tooltips and descriptions to the effects until much later this evening. If someone else has time to look at it great. Otherwise it would be a real jump start just to get people to list the effects that they think require more explaination. Unfortunately some of the effects that might require the most explaination don't pop up an autogui to display it (eg envelope), this just occured to me. -Function Plotter needs to say that it requires a selected <rect/> -Random Tree needs to say that the result will be off canvas -Fractal (L-System) needs to say that the result will be off canvas -? I did a few fixups to lindenmayer.py. The original script is already great, but needed to remove something that seems to me a bug (the extra-segment stuff). Also expanded a litle the syntax for the rules, so you now can use A, B, C, D and F for making the job of F, and G,H,I,J,K,L for making the job of G. As in the original script, you can use other letters to produce only gramatical expansions and no graphical effects. Now it's posible to render Sierpinski triangles. See the attached file to see the problems and the extra stuff.

Hi, There are two versions of eqtexsvg.py script - one works fine on windows and Tav's version works on linux. So, I decided trying to make a mixed version of eqtexsvg.py using OS detection stuff. Is it safe to detect OS by testing of os.name variable in python ? Posibble names are: 'posix', 'nt', 'dos', 'os2', 'mac', or 'ce' and I assume linux='posix' and windows='nt'. Another question is how to make dynamic dependencies (OS based - if it's possible) in .inx file ? lapnect

So, this is a callout to anyone who is familiar with the mathematics of beziers, I need your help, generally, but also specifically. Generally, if you would be willing to volunteer as someone I can consult with on bezier math, that would be great, give me a shout. Specifically, I want to write a method that outputs a list of equally spaced points along a bezier BUT, I don't mean equally spaced t-values for the bezier -- I can already do this -- I mean points that are of equal distance along the bezier. I'm almost certain the two are distinct. Any suggestions ? A lot of potential functionality for path effects seem to rest on this ability.

Render Latex Equation fails on Linux distributions The Render Latex equation Extension fails. The python file eqtexsvg.py fails in two places: 1. This escript calls latex with -output-directory option wich does not exist in common Latex Linux distributions. It can be solved easily avoiding the -output-directory option using python commands to manage the generated files. 2. This script calls pstoedit with -f svg option but standar pstoedit for Linux distributions do not include a svg driver!! Justin, Just use a simple crawler while loop that resamples the interpolated points of the Bezier curve by weighting several points, so that you end up with a very similar curve but with regular point separation (specified at will, optimally the average point interdistance). Problems with Latex formula extension...

The pstoedit version (3.42) installed in Suse 10.0 doesn't accept the command line options passed to it from the eqtexsvg.py extension file. I really love and need this feature, but to be truth I'm not an expert at using LaTeX and satellite command line utilities, so the more I could do was to write a workaround, see it at the bottom. Still remains a problem, present in the original eqtexsvg.py and the adjoint one: when the formula doesn't parses correctly, the script hangs, possibly because LaTeX doesn't leave, but remains in interactive mode; turning Inkscape irresponsive. I finally fixed the long-standing bug 933482: * Converting stroke to path now correctly processes dashed strokes. For paths with markers, this command now creates a group containing the stroke converted to path and all its markers as independent objects (i.e. they are not markers anymore, but instead you can easily transform them or paint them any color, as a workaround for the "markers don't take the color of the stroke" bug). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Says for the release he wants to get these resolved. Something drops tablet motion events on the floor while the button is held down. This occurs for some tools, but not with others. The bugs are quite annoying but weird. They don't affect all tablet users. 4/29 - Still underway 5/19 - Still unresolved. Mental considers this a release blocker. Brush size adjustment on zoom toggle for calligraphic pen - DONE ========================================================= MentalGuy is working on this and plans to have it to a finished point for the release. 5/1 - Mental reports this has been completed Layer dialog ============ This is an important feature for the release, and on MentalGuy's todo list. However, work has been stuck getting Inkscape::LayerManager to compile due to a subtle detail with sigc::mem_fun(), and it's uncertain if there is sufficient time to unstick it and finish the feature prior to the release. Additional people's help may be needed here. [Beyond the memory issue, are there other aspects to the layer dialog that others could help with, such as UI work or coding helper features or whatever? --bh] 4/29 - Still under way 5/17 - Huge amount of progress made on it. Still not to a point that it's ready to release, but it's close. One of the major remaining issues is that the layer manager is destroying and recreating the hierarchy when the user selects a different layer. This causes state to be lost, which results in a few ui quirks that will probably be irritating for users. It'll be worthwhile to give another day or two for development before freezing this feature. 5/19 - Mental mentions that with the advancements in the new layer dialog, the quick layer selector needs to be reworked as well, as a lot of previously hidden bugs now become apparent when reordering layers and/or using nested layers. The back-end portion needs to be replaced with LayerManager. If we don't do this, we can expect many bug reports that the layer selector is broken. This is perhaps a couple day's work to get done right. Fit Canvas to Selection - DONE ======================= This is a feature ACSpike has been working on, and plans to complete for the release. The patch is here: http://www.ekips.org/comp/inkscape/inx/current.diff ODG Format Support - HOLD ================== Ishmal is working on this currently. Help is needed from someone who knows inkscape gradients, such as mental or bulia. He needs to know how to read gradient info from an SPGradient object. 5/20 - not a release killer; going to leave it for .45. Ishmal had wanted to get some of the clipart and example images to look the same on oo.org as in inkscape. DOM Support - HOLD =========== Ishmal has been working on this. The newest code is all imported and builds. [Is there anything else needing to be done prior to release?] 5/20 - xpath won't make this release. The parsing and compilation are ok, but binding isn't yet, and will need to wait for a future release. SIOX Support ============ Ishmal has this over half done. The code is all imported and building, and the selection mechanism is now done. Getting Inkscape and SIOX intercommunication working, but this can be built as a filter to potrace, which simplifies things. The transformation issues reported previously have been sorted out, using a "confidence matrix". 5/20 - Ishmal says this is incredibly close and wants to finish it before the release. He's planning on devoting the next few days to it. He will need a lot of help testing it. Extensions ========== Ted is focusing on cleaning up extension parameters and felt he'd have this wrapped up by the end of the month. The plan is to have longer text (tool tips) available, and a few more widgets. More spacing in the autogui will be added to make it look nicer. * Ted reports there is an unverified bug in the ordering of the effects in the menu, to be investigated. The Extension Editor is further off, and not being planned for this release. 5/1 - Ted reports the feature is not yet working, but feels it shouldn't be a problem to get it fixed in the next couple weeks. 5/10 - Descriptions are added and status bar messages work. Tooltips have been implemented but don't work for some reason. The major remaining piece is documentation - release notes and a post about the new INX file parameters. * Update release notes Snapping - BUG ======== Ralf is coming up to speed on this issue. Hopefully Carl can also shed light on things. On 4/26 Carl said he hopes to have a look at it over the coming week. * Need to fix the freeze when dragging multiple selected objects: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1429049&group_id=9… * Update Release Notes Rendering Performance Speedup - DONE ============================= Andrius has a very interesting rendering speedup patch. The feature is complete and accepted for the release. There is one known issue to address with scrolling, but Andrius feels this can be fixed. 4/30 - Andrius reports this is now done, and no other issues are known. Screenshots =========== Scislac has taken this task on, and plans to have it done for the release. Two screenshots are done currently, and one more is in the works. There will be a call for more screenshots on the Deviant Art site. 5/20 - 2 of 8 screenshots are uploaded. One is waiting on the text toolbar work. The ones related to "Tremor"... I'd prefer to have nicer art for that purpose (I have some that can suffice, but I'd like better ones). The Paste Size one which I haven't touched yet, but that will be fairly easy since it just needs to be "technical". I have the selected style indicator one which is probably a LOT of compositing to have most, if not all states. And I also have a relatively simple one to whip up for non-destructive node deletion. Tutorials ========= Calligraphy is mostly done, and a few of the other updates to the other tutorials have been drafted but that stuff definitely needs more work. Should be possible to have them done by the end of April. Man page should be current. Bulia will update keys.xml shortly. Note: The sooner these can be finalized, the sooner translators can get going on them. 5/1 - ScislaC says a lot of progress was made over the weekend, but has run into some errors regenerating the svgs & html Calligraphic interface tweak - DONE ============================ Bulia is working on this change requested by MentalGuy, and feels they are minor and should have no trouble completing for the release. No owner has been identified for this task !!! Bulia reports that extensions that rely on PyXML still do not work on Windows. Due to the number of python extensions, this would be a major missing feature for Windows users. Text/Fonts UI ============= deadchip (aka Milosz Derezynski <internalerror at gmail dot com>) has written a font lister Gtkmm class, to enable re-use of the font list. He is planning to write a font picker dialog, and rewrite the current font picker to use the font _listing_ class. This enables using normal Gtk components (ListStore, etc.) for accessing the font info. He plans to have this work done by May 1st, or May 15th at the latest. Windows "dialogs on top" Patch for GTK - HOLD ====================================== !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! This is not exactly an Inkscape-specific problem, since the code changes wouldn't be to Inkscape, but it would be nice to have it finally fixed. This 0.44 release effort may be a good vehicle to tie it to, but we won't hold up the release if it doesn't get done. New File Chooser in Export - DONE ========================== We have a patch for this, but there were some thoughts of embedding it in the export dialog directly. In the spirit of "patch first, discuss later", the best approach may be to stick in the current patch for 0.44, see what folks think, and do the embedding later. Test Harness ============ Bryce is working on getting 'make test' working in the test harness. It works currently, but the data is not getting included in the reports. In fact, I seem to have busted the reports entirely, so it'll take a bit more poking at to make it work. Announcing the 2006 Summer of Code Projects

Hi all! Today was the final day for the Google Summer of Code proposal rankings. As you can imagine, a number of us inkscaper's have been in deep, intensive discussions and votes to arrive at the final prioritization. The final decision of which 4 to select was extremely difficult, and really came down to the wire. A large part of the controversy was whether to have both of the SVG filter projects in the top 4, or to go with 4 distinct projects. But just then, in an amazing stroke of luck, Google was kind enough to allocate an additional project to Inkscape, increasing us to 5 slots! :-) Thus, our final project selection is as follows: Application Student Mentor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SVG Filter Effects #1 Niko Kiirala Bulia Inkboard Protocol Spec / Lib Conversion Dale Harvey David Yip PDF Export with Cairo Mikos Erdelyi Ted Gould Memory Optimization Marina Diezler MenTaLguY SVG Filter Effects #2 Hugo Rodrigues Bulia As I understand it, one of the SVG filter projects will be focused on the internal handling of filters at the SPObject level, the other will be focused on the rendering of the filters. Thank you to everyone who applied this year. There were a number of excellent projects, and arriving at the final selection was extremely tough. Many of the proposed ideas were extremely cool and we would love to see them developed, and would love to be able to welcome the applicants to be part of the Inkscape community. Many criteria went into our final decision, more than can be easily related. However, one of the driving considerations was for work we felt would maximize the benefit to Inkscape users. We know from user feedback that these projects, if completed successfully, will have a transformational effect on Inkscape as an application - by the end of this summer, Inkscape will likely be a light-year ahead of where it is today. Effects documentation

I would like to see some basic documentation for every effect in Inkscape telling: - what state Inkscape must be in for the effect to be successful - how the effect responds to errors - what changes to the document result from the effect - dependencies of the effect (language, additional libraries) A wiki seems like it's a good place to start for this documentation. Someone has already started a page for this here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WhatEffectsDo, and I have added one more example. I was going to attempt this on my own, but I thought I'd do a callout to the developers first because they know what their effects do better than I do, and when I was effects code on the SVN some of it wasn't documented much. Summer of Code - info for mentors and students

Hi all, I think Google has still not put out the official announcement about accepted proposals, but they've emailed the students. I checked with google last night, and there have been no changes in Inkscape's projects from what I announced earlier. Students may begin work immediately; it would be good for all students and mentors to touch base and say hello. As well, here's some info that will hopefully help fill in a few blanks: Summer Schedule: ---------------- May 23 - Google notifies selected students Students may begin work on projects Jun 30 - Mid-program mentor evaluations of student progress due Aug 21 - Student projects due Sep 5 - Mentor and student evaluations due Release Early, Release Often: ----------------------------- One of the principles of open source development is that you publish your code as you go. This is different than what students may be used to, but it is extremely important that this be followed. Students should plan on putting out a series of releases of their work through the summer. These releases don't need to be perfect, or even particularly remarkable, but by putting out releases, others can provide interim feedback so that by the end of the summer there will be no doubt that the student has been successful. For the mid-program evaluation, mentors should take into account whether the student has released their code in their evaluation. SVN Access: ----------- Google requires that all students conduct their work in a public repository. For inkscape, this will be Inkscape's subversion service hosted at sourceforge.net. We have a simple policy for gaining SVN access to be followed. The applicant submits two patches and has them accepted, then requests access from one of the admins (Mental, Bulia, myself, or Jon Cruz). Some students have already qualified; for those who havent, they should simply send a couple simple patches (maybe the start of the SOC work? or a small bugfix?) SVN Branches: ------------- Since we are in feature freeze, the student's work should be done on a branch in SVN. Even if we weren't in feature freeze, this would be good practice. The mentor should probably either set up this branch for the student, or help the student create it. Merging to Head: ---------------- The mentor and student should also plan to move the branch to HEAD at an appropriate point during the summer. It should occur at some point after the 0.44.0 release, but before the end of the SOC program. As part of this process, the student will also need to work with other inkscape developers to resolve integration problems, bugs, or other issues that arise. For this reason, integrating early will give the most gain and least pain. ;-) (The merge is likely a point where the student will really need his mentor's help the most.) inkscape svn+debian

Hi! Do I need to download svn trunk, if I want to test the prereleases? For the debian packaging I think the debian/control file missed a ',' character in it. So I attached a really minor patch(lol). cd debian; svn diff -x -u >control.diff I think the version from '0.43+0.44pre1-1' should changed to something '0.44pre1-1'. Am I wrong? However Im not able to build from inkscape svn. From the svn snapshot tarballs compiles fine. What is need to running in the fresh svn checkout, to be identic to the svn snapshot tarballs?
