In my understandign there are two different cases: 1. mask/clippath object is leaved in the document 2. clipping object is moved into defs, but removed from document (no longer visible) For the first case, I guess the simple approach would be to have something like: <defs> <clipPath id="clipPath123"> <use href="url to the clipping object(s)> </clipPath> </defs> <g clip-path="#clipPath123"> ... the clipping object(s) ... ... the clipped objects ... </g> This leaves clippath in defs and allows edditing of a mask directly by editing a clipping object. This can also be implemented without a group and it should still work But for second scenario (object is removed) editing is more complicated, but we can still have this grouping and on entering (dbl-clicking) a group, clipping objects can be copied to a group, so they can be edited, after leaving a group copied object properties goes to a clipPath element and copied object is restored. Or a new manu item "Edit clip path" can be added, which will do basicly the same, but group will not be required, so this can also be used for masks created outside of Inkscape. Hello, I received an e-mail from the german computer magazin asking what is the progress with the XARA involvement and what is the impact/influence into Inkscape. And also he want to know if this is going into a competition between the two products. He is refering the LIBRE-Meeting. Was there someone? I did not really red all the e-mail's abaout that. No I was just after potential benifits to inkscape of using their code. but Ben has filled in a few of those blanks. It would be good to see what converters they have, we still need that pdf lib. Once again I urge all devs to promptly update the release notes: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes If you procrastinate for too long, you may forget some important details, or even the very essense of your changes. As a result these changes will be underdescribed or completely omitted from this document, and as a result users will remain unaware of them. And _that_ means your changes will remain largely unnoticed, unused and UNTESTED. In extreme cases they will just bitrot and poison our codebase. Please don't let that happen. Animation

Thinking about this feature, if inkscape wants to be a drawing tool then it will never develop the ability to handle animations, they would be counter to the way a document is handled, printed ect. but if inkscape is moving towards complete support of SVG only then it will be interesting to see animation features added, although I'd create a separate tool which used alot of the same code, because lets face it there is alot of really nice tools that can be developed for animation programs but aren't useful for a drawing app. -- #::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::# #::.. http://www.doctormo.co.uk/ ..::# #::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::#

"link" and "unlink" in icons

In our three icons sets we have three different depictions of link and unlink for edit_clone and edit_unlink_clone. The legacy set features a yellow line. The new crispy set features a padlock. And David's set features a chain. I prefer the chain. It means something to me. When I see the chain I immediately think about "link". For me this is a better iconification of the concept. Is this a cultural issue? Would anyone else prefer the chain over the lock? Perhaps icon sets need to be localized. :-) Aaron Spike

Hi team I am not a dev person, but I posted to a company today that I thought could be a good potential partner for opensource graphic application developers. The are an international printing ink manufacturer. Much respected in the printing sector and who do have an alternative colour matching system integrated into proprietory software at this time. As they are not the primary colour matching system used in that market I thought they might be interested in what could happen if they partner with open source tech. Anyway my 2 messages are included below in reverse order. Top one is to Kylie in Melbourne, Bottom one was sent first, through their website form. I am trying to make sure that I am letting the developers know what I posted. This is not a cultural thing but a language thing. 1) Chains have links, you are not showing a chain but a link in a chain 2) Padlocks mean something else, they are to protect, keep out and to lock The padlock could mean 'don't let me change this object keep it padlocked' where as the chain link would mean 'I want to link like a chain' I don't know what other languages and cultures would use but we've never had problems enforcing our own ideas of symbolism on the rest of the world why stop now. Help. Tricky code and lack of sleep have slowed my brain a bit too much. For doing color drag-n-drop I've got an SPItem pointer, and the color RGB value that was that was dropped onto it. My main question is what is the 'proper' way to do that?

Hi, I just finished one small UI enhancment - ability to create sublayers by using "Create Layer" dialog (patch http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1447043&group_id=9… ), I find it very usefull while I'm creating maps on Inkscape, but I wonder that other are thinking about it. Also, I found two very nice SVG features supported by Inkscape rendering engine, but not available in UI - masks and clipPaths. I tried to think of various ways to implement that in UI and there is a suggestion: - Add menu item "Mask from selection" - Menu item invokes a dialog where user can input: - select if he wants to make a mask or clip path, - enter a label, - view box type (none, user space, object bounding box). This also enables view box properties (x, y, width, height) - select if original object should be removed from layer - select if mask is automatically applied to a current layer - Add properties "Mask:" and "Clipping path" to layer properties dialog and let user select from available clipPath/mask elements - Not sure how this should fit into a layer dialog which (as I understand) is currently developed For a start I will make a prototype for myself without a dialog (mask creation from selection, applying it to a current layer), and if the will be no objections in this list, I will make it with a dialog. So, I'd like to hear that do you think and maybe someone can give me some tips, things not taken into a consideration, etc. Thanks, Andrius

Okay, so it turned out that I was still subscribed under an old email address, but my mailers sends everyone with the current one. Anyway, my fault, and I would like to thank Manish for helping me out of my bewilderment. What I wanted to propose & work on after my 1.5 release is the following: Cooperating on get an OpenDocument specification for layered raster images done and into the OASIS OpenDocument standard. Krita would use that format for its native format, of course, as all of KOffice is moving to OpenDocument. OpenDocument automatically means some choices are made for us: a zip file store, a certain layout inside that store, and xml main document and resources for the binary data. Those choices may not be the best possible technical choices, but Krita already uses a similar mechanism and it seems to work. And since the Gimp and Krita have a different set of capabilities, we'd have to make a flexible and complete specification, one that includes all possible (possibly uninvented as yet) color models, adjustment layers, paths (which Krita doesn't have) and so on. I would really like to cooperate on this, since a standard used by one application isn't a standard at all and since it would mean much better interchange of documents than would be possible through either Photoshop (ancient version 6 or reverse-engineered later versions) or XCF. hi all, recent changes (I believe those made to the swatches panel) induced a change in appearance of the status bar. OSX windows decorations hide the zoom buttons. it was corrected before but the buttons are hidden again in today's svn. thank you in advance for us poor OS X users who do not have control over the window decorations style :-) in addition I had the impression that the panels were under the status bar and not above in some fairly recent svn builds. personally I preferred that but I can just be inventing this... win32: separating debug symbols

Hi, all, For a while now, there has been a struggle between those of us who want testers to send us full Gdb backtraces, and people who need smaller files to download over their connections. I have been working on a compromise between the two: 1. Separating out the debug symbols into a file named inkscape.dbg, and then stripping inkscape.exe . This takes longer to link, but it preserves all of the debug symbols. 2. For each .exe that we place on a download page, we also provide a compressed copy of its corresponding .dbg file. Now testers do not need to download those many MB of symbols every time, but when a bug happens, they can download the .dbg, do a backtrace, and send the info to us. Now the difference between the 'stripped' and 'unstripped' versions of the builds need only refer to the accompanying DLLs, not the Inkscape executable itself. I committed the makefiles already, and I'm uploading Inkscape0603021243.zip and Inkscape0603021243-dbg.zip. Hope this can help alleviate some of the confusion. I'll post some info on how to use gdb with the .dbg file. Bob (ishmal)

Save as XCF with layers

I know this has been mentioned before. Some people think it would be handy to save an SVG file from Inkscape as an XCF maintaining layers. I was going to have together a quick output extension in python and an accompanying script-fu for the gimp to make this happen, but I don't think we have the appropriate export options. It would be really fun to have a single command to export all the layers at once to something like filename-0001-layername.png, but I don't know how widely applicable that would be. According to the man page, --export-id forces the object's bbox for --export-area. I think this makes what I want to do impossible. I would suggest we make canvas size ALWAYS default and add an --export-bbox option. This would mean more typing for the people who already use this functionality, but it would IMHO make more sense overall. Aaron Spike

Color drag-n-drop

I just checked in a change to make the style minibar a target for color drag-n-drop. You can now drag colors from the swatches palette onto either the fill or stroke indicators to change the current object. Also, this should work with any apps doing a standard color drag-n- drop. I've tried this with The GIMP and also the 'font and colors' preference settings for gedit. I'd be interested in seeing which other apps do and do not work will with this. Also, since I fixed how color is dragged *from* the swatches, other programs should accept colors dragged from Inkscape.

Panel rework direction mockup

I've been able to get more progress on the dockable stuff, and generic previews. That's the underlying code that's supporting the color palettes in the main UI. Hopefully we can get things tuned up to improve it to the point were it can be used for many things other than just the color swatches. I've done a quick mockup of where things might be going: notice what's down there next to the color swatches.

If the problem is that you're sometimes getting a (non-NULL) garbage pointer in dlgPtr, that has to be fixed upstream. It's probably a source of other bugs too. Besides, a typecheck here would only catch a garbage pointer most of the time. Occasionally, the arbitrary data being pointed to will have the right bit pattern... -mental

flattening transparency

I've been trying to educate myself about our printing problem by exploring cairo, librsvg, the uberconvertor and pdf in general. I stumbled across this document entitled, "Achieving Reliable Print Output from Adobe Applications when Using Transparency." http://partners.adobe.com/public/asn/en/print_resource_center/TXPGuide.pdf It seems to me that most all of the functionality needed for flattening out transparency already exists in Inkscape. A rather brute force method could be: 1) Replace all strokes with paths 2) Decompose all overlapping objects (this would be an additional boolean op, and it has been requested twice in my recent memory) 3) Replace all area's of overlapping transparency with a bitmap copy. 4) Replace all non overlapping transparency with the resultant color. Further optimizations would of course be possible. My exploration of cairo and librsvg has only been very casual, but I can't imagine that either of them will be well suited to this sort of decomposition task. But maybe with all of the recent excitement and advancement around vectors a good LGPL computational geometry library will pop up. Aaron Spike

The library is doing the right thing. In and of itself, any private use character could be printable or non- printable, and is not covered by the specs or such functions. If our application can deal with the Private Use Area (which I've verified we do), all we need to do is check for it. g_unichar_validate () then g_unichar_type(..) == G_UNICODE_PRIVATE_USE will take care of things the right way. Aside from other issues, this makes Inkscape's input behavior consistent with other systems, including the built-in OS X method. (Tricky to find, but easy to use once it's checked). Of course, this led me to wonder if we might want to warn upon insertion of a Private Use Area character. I'm attaching a quick sample that shows the use of two private area characters (the second being the Apple glyph). This is happy-happy for me here in Inkscape and FireFox.

Strange behaviour of translation

Hi, from some time ago I'm having trouble testing my translation of Inkscape. I update from svn and the po file is completely translated (only a few strings are missing, but they belong to a filter/effect). I do the usual $ ./configure --prefix=/var/opt --with-perl --with-python $ make $ make install And when I run /var/opt/bin/inkscape I find that many of the strings that used to be OK in previous versions are now in english. Gareth, The Inkscape project would like to really thank you for the extra effort you made to get an Inkscape booth. We had lots of visitors and many were exposed to Inkscape for the first time. Michael, For months I've been annoyed by a number of small breakages in Inkscape behavior. Knots and handles remained highlighted after I release mouse; rubberband rectangle stayed on if I accidentally ended it on a node; some other small weirdnesses. Nothing fatal, but rather annoying, and a sign of something broken somewhere. Today I finally had time to do timed checkouts to find out when this thing started. What I found was your change back in August: http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/display/s… I understand your reason for this change, but as you see, by enabling your own tool, you disrupted the work of most other tools that relied on the old behavior. So I would really appreciate if you rethink this change and implement it in some other less disruptive way. For example, you can add a flag to canvas items that would make them receive events while mouse is down, and use that for your connector tool handles, while all other canvas items would by default not receive events as before. Or you can add a flag to canvas itself to switch it to "pick while mouse down" mode only when in connector tool. Or you can come up with something entirely different. Designing a poster with Inkscape

Hi all, I've been using Inkscape latest SVN extensively for a while to produce a scientific poster. My first words are: thank you so much! I've hesitated and tested inkscape, scribus, omnigraffle, adobe illustrator and even keynote (power point like program from apple) before choosing inkscape. I hoped to make the SCALE people benefit from my experience but it seems that there will be no actual poster there... too bad ;-) I don't know if it's good enough for the showcase section of the web site but here are some screenshots and small accompanying texts: -------------------------- A scientific poster has to be precisely organized, full of information yet visually attracting and should be printable at different scales (poster + handouts). Though Inkscape was not directly intended for such use, all these goals were achieved with it! http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/ poster_publish_ghostscript.pdf [WARNING: big file. 7.5 Mb] The layers and outline mode allowed to work on this complicated file while keeping things responsive enough. When it got to the point that the whole file was just too big (over 5000 objects) it was cut down in pieces and all files were merged in the final document by import or copy/paste. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_outline.png The gradients and scripts from the new "Effects" menu helped to create an attractive look (well, attractive to me at least!). The bitmap tracing feature and open clipart library provided scale independent eye candy for some icons and other stuff. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_eye_candy.png The text was flowed into custom shaped frames so that it had a "clever" position with respect to the graphics. It was edited though the Text Tool palette which was easier on the eye and helped to focus on content rather than on layout for a while. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_text.png All the vector graphics were produced in SVG and were therefore completely editable within the poster which allowed to have a unified look (for the fonts, line width, colors etc.). The text was outlined to avoid font problems when printing on some other computer for 2mx1m output. The PDF was scaled down to A4 sheets in order to produce handouts. -------------------------- The above text gives you some the "Pros" of using inkscape for this work. Thank you again for all these functionalities which made my life easier (especially the latest additions which made it worth using SVN) and developed rather than restraint my creativity (well I'm a scientist but let say I can be creative anyway ;-) ). Unfortunately there are still some "Cons" :-). I listed them in decreasing order of importance: 1. An important problem was speed. As I mentioned, hiding layers and using the great outline mode helped but responsiveness was still not always optimal. I worked (remotely though, by X -query) on a big dual Xeon with lot of RAM. Try to move something with the mouse on the final file: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_publish.svg [WARNING 12.1 Mb] On this file I experience a delay of 1 to 3 seconds when moving complex objects, especially when many snapping options are enabled. 2. I encountered regular crashes (20 to 30 in the total editing time which is around 30 hours I think). Their impact was diminished by the auto saving feature though (thanks, I think I would have gone crazy without it). Many occurred at the end of a long editing process, with many documents open, but were not reproducible when I reopened the autosaved document and retry the same modification. I guess they are related to some memory failure somewhere. They often happen when adding layers of ungrouping complex sets of objects but I cannot be more precise sorry... Inkboard

Hey all I am a student doing a 4th year project, studying the usability / workflow effects of a multi user vector graphics prorgam, at the time, I had not heard of inkboard, and planned on developing a prototype myself. then, after realising this was far too ambitious, I decided to add multi user functionality to inkscape, to realise it had already been done. Searching the net / mailing list archives it seems there isnt any up to date information on the current state of inkboards development. I have it compiled from the latest stable and cant get inkboard sharing with other users(different bugs show with loudmouth 0.17 / 1.0 / 1.0.1), I will try compiling the latest svn checkout today My plan is to take inkboard (either the rewrite or current release, depending on the rewrite state) and modify it to fit my requirements, due to the timescale on my project, and my lack of experience with open source development, I would not be looking to join inkscape development team immediately, if all goes well with my project, I would be happy to contribute my effort to inkboard after your review. So I would appreciate it if somone could fill me in on the current state of its development, and possibly point to where my problem is getting it working ( ill post details if needed ) Also any advice pointers on how to develop with inkscape would be appreciated, I am familiar with c++, however nowhere near this scale project, which I am familiar with in other languages (java, erlang) I will be looking to contribute to inkscape / inkboard in the future after my project is finished and I have some experience with its development Thanks Dale Harvey

Label view option

Hi all, Yes I'm still here looking the code :-) What I want (apart from a working barcode plugin and clear image import options) is node labels. Currently when you select and drag nodes you have '0' information about what your doing to the node, what the node is ect ect. The first thing would be to add this information to the status bar, size of lines on either side of the node, angle of node, position on page ect ect. The second would be to have a view option which shows the above information as little labels that appear when you begin a drag operation. so next to the lines that the node effects would be size and curve information, a label near the node would tell you it's position and angle (maybe with on of those arcs to show what it is), now I know this is not useful to artist types because they don't so much design as just draw, but for creating regular complex shapes this information would be invaluable and having it near the object while the operation is being carried out would make it easy to understand as well as being closer to your eye. Hey again I was wondering if there was any quick guide to development with inkscape I have read http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DeveloperManual however I was looking for more of a quick guide to compliation of the seperate files / linking etc Currently, reasonably new to c++, especially on a project this big, I am just running make while making small changes to individual files, it works, but incredibly time consuming, so was wondering if there was a way of compiling / linking individual source files, without recompiling the entire modules it resides within if anyone could give me a quick overview of their process while developing small changes I could figure out the details and probably post a beginners guide on the wiki Thanks Dale

new cursors problem

The new cursors recently committed by Scislac don't work for me on win2k. connector layout

Hi All, I recently added the "rectangle overlap removal" algorithm to inkscape and received so much useful feedback (advice, testing and so on) throughout the process that I'm now quite keen to start another project. The connector stuff that was introduced in 0.43 is a really powerful concept and makes inkscape much more of a "diagramming" tool. Between the connector routing and the overlap removal stuff we have the basics of some nice automatic diagram layout. I'd like to continue this by incorporating some "graph layout" algorithms to adjust the positions of objects at the end of connectors to achieve things like minimal crossing of connectors and to better show coupling and cohesion in the network (graph) defined by the connectors. I'd appreciate any feedback people have on this idea. Also, I'd really like to use the boost 'graph' libraries to get this happening quickly. Boost already has some basic layout algorithms which we can use right away, but I'll also need the underlying graph data-structures and algorithms in boost to implement new algorithms. What are the logistics of adding boost to the inkscape dependency tree? I've noticed similar requests for boost in the inkscape-devel archives... it seems like I'm not the only one who would benefit. ello, in the last days, of about 5500 include lines, over 2200 were removed by a simple program that, for every include, tried to compile the source without it. After a first run, problems were identified and handled by removing overgenerous includes from the most important headers. Also, the problem of non-indented ifdefed includes turned up and needed manual intervention. For this reason, it is possible that compilation in some cases barfs because of overzealous removing. Another annoying tidbit is the removal of non-indented includes of config.h. The about two dozen cases will be rewritten the next days and should not affect compilation in most cases. Finally, some includes were removed of the respective header belonging to the source file. This does not affect compilation at all but might annoy some people writing in the source later on. Please bear with the side effects. I firmly believe that they are worth it all. A log file of the removal is available on request. All in all, a 1.5 GHz computer with 2.5" hard disk needed 12 hours full work for it. Thanks for your patience, ralf

SCALE Booth

Okay, we have a booth, now what do we want to do with it? First off, who's coming? I've got me, John Taber and Jon Cruz. Jon Phillips? Bryce, I know how you love LAX! Josh, I know how much a Southwest flight from Phoenix is, come for a day! I was wondering if we couldn't do something like "mini-tutorials" at the booth. The idea would be that they would be like 5 minutes, people standing, and cover just a single feature of Inkscape. Then, we could make a flier covering that same feature -- which would give us interesting give aways for the rest of the time. If we did one each hour, we'd need roughly 16 of them. We could make a schedule, it might generate traffic. What do people think? Maybe the same 8 twice (two day conference)? I was also thinking that we need some artwork, perhaps the About screens? They say Inkscape on them, yet still show off features? Brainstorming people, argue, attack, kill my ideas! Go! :) --Ted

osx 10.3.9, python 2.3, Inkscape 0.4.3 (Inkscape_20060120.dmg) installed PyXML-0.8.4 successfully nothing happens when you go: File >> Execute Python in the script dialog starting inkscape from command line gives only this error when that command is executed: interpretScript: error starting Language '(null)' I do other python stuff, and was looking forwards to generating complex artwork from algorithms in a form that was human editable later. cheers Mat

There are now a number of projects that package a gtk+ application into a "standalone" OS X app. For example, Inkscape and GIMPshop both build standalone OS X apps based on the methods you developed for Gimp.app. The technique of taking all the dependencies and stuffing them into your app bundle is adequate for getting a single app working but it leaves much to be desired when multiple apps are using those same dependencies. You end up with multiple copies of some pretty big libraries lying around taking up space on disk and in memory. In order to minimize this wasted space, support files (like header files) are left out, leading to the current problem where OS X users aren't able to build plugins without descending into the seventh circle of Fink. As a solution to these problems, I would like to suggest packaging a complete install of gtk+ and its dependencies separately from Gimp.app. It would mean that installing Gimp.app would become a two- step process instead of a one-step process, but the OS X community as a whole would see a tremendous benefit. There are lots of other great gtk+ apps out there that could reach a broad audience on OS X if it was only easier to just install them! The only sensible way to achieve this is if there's a fast, simple way to install gtk+ and its dependencies. Some of you may be thinking "well what about Fink and DarwinPorts?" The fact is that neither of these is a satisfying solution. The "stable" branch of Fink is terribly out of date and the "unstable" branch (like DarwinPorts) requires hours of building from source to get gtk+ installed. And either solution involves lots of futzing with the command line. If you've come to OS X from linux that seems simple, but for most OS X users it's a major turn-off. Anyhow, I hope you'll consider this proposal seriously. I honestly believe it could open the door for lots of great gtk+ apps to be ported to standalone OS X apps. I'm going to post the same message in the Inkscape forum, so maybe both projects can work together. Not sure if anyone saw it go into the tracker, but, when going to snag the undo history diff from the patch tracker I saw that there is a patch to do color cursors that support transparency. Would someone that knows more c++ than myself be willing to review it? Man oh man is this release cycle shaping up to be the most improved so far. Anyway, the idea that I have is that if we don't actually use any gtk+ 2.8 features, that we should use the last 2.6 lib bundle we had for win32 building to release win9x compatible builds again (in addition to the 2.8 builds for 2000/xp). I know that there have been good bug fixes in gtk since then, but if we can still technically produce the builds I think we should try. I honestly don't think having two windows builds would be a bad thing, the same way that we will post packages for different distros. If others are okay this idea, I will even offer to produce those 9x compatible builds for the releases until we're no longer able to. Any thoughts? -Josh

I understand your concerns about boost... let my try and allay them: A quick browse of the boost graph headers shows there are some dependencies on other parts of boost, but I haven't found any reference to the dreaded smart_ptr stuff yet ;-). Hopefully, I could pare it down to a minimal set of headers (not including smart_ptr and so on) before adding anything to the inkscape code base. Regarding the build process the graph examples compile with (assuming headers in the include path): g++ example.cpp -o example As for optimisation, the algorithms we're talking about are quite computationally intensive and boost is written in a heavily templated generic style. I think that's the only reason they recommend optimisation. Surely inkscape binary distributions are compiled with optimisation on anyway, right? I was a bit worried about bloat and compilation speed but the examples which use the kind of stuff I need compile down to <100k (on x86 linux) in a few seconds. I'm guessing, but I think this would be comparable to an stl based implementation of the same thing. Regarding "mismatch of code" with the rest of the project, I really would just be using the graph datastructures and algorithms. I don't have any intention of using any of the fancy stuff that fundamentally affects coding style (like the aforementioned smart_ptrs or the lambda stuff).

Hi, I'm not sure, whether work on redoing Document Properties/Metadata dialogs is finished or not, so my question may go out of sync with your intentions :) Are these dialogs supposed to be *real* dialogs or palettes? If dialogs, could they have "Close" button in the bottom please? In both cases (dialogs and palettes) closing them with [Escape] keyboard button would be helpful as well. Ideally, any dialog or palette should be closed on [Escape]. Alexandre
