When and where are copied selections released during program exit?

The topic pretty much says it all. I'm curious because valgrind output, already awash with style.cpp lines, picks up some new code points in that source file if one does: open file, select, copy, exit as compared to open file, exit Possibly items left on the clipboard? On a related note, is there a debugging facility already in Inkscape that logs to stdout or a file messages when SPObject objects are created, referenced, dereferenced, and destroyed? Something like: + 0x12345678 objectype1 # created at that address + 0x22345678 objectype2 ^ 0x12345678 0x22345678 # referenced by object at the second address (memory pointer) x 0x12345678 0x22345678 # dereferenced by object at the second address - 0x22345678 objectype2 # destroyed - 0x12345678 objectype1 That is pretty primitive but it would at least provide a simple way to follow these sorts of activities, which is otherwise pretty painful to do using gdb. I'm not sure how to fit signals into this log, but that would be helpful too. I'm not so sure this is possible since it tends to go through intervening functions, but something along these lines maybe? Hello all, I was cleaning up my branch of last year's GSoC project - Recolor Artwork. I was using a piece of code that involved SPEventContext but this doesn't compile anymore. I guess the structure was cppified by another GSoCer: Markus Engel. Well, I can't get around to how to use the alternate Event structure now. Can someone shed some light on it ? Python update

Hello everyone, I develop a set of extensions for Python. In my opinion, the extensions are easy to develop, great and powerful tool, widening the usability of Inkscape that help spread the Inkscape among users. Because of the need for GUI and websocket client, I've updated the version of Python in the Inkscape to 2.7 and added PyQt4 and ws4py libraries. All features has been tested on Windows. Now I would like to ask, whether there is a possibility to make this version a standard version included in the instalation of Inkscape? Eventually what steps are required to switch the Python version in the standard distribution of Inkscape? I can provide you the list of all steps, that have to be done to update the Python version for Windows and offer closer cooperation by making this change. I believe, this change would make the possibilities of the extensions even better, especially the possibility of having graphical user interface, which is easy to made. Best regards Lubomir =

Hi, A heads-up... While mucking about the code I noticed that the same basic code to handle viewBox and preserveAspectRatio appeared in multiple files (8 times?) having originally been pasted directly or copied with some changes. Overtime the code was tweaked here and there. I have created a new base class to handle viewBox and preserveAspectRatio and modified sp-root, sp-symbol, sp-image, sp-pattern, and marker to use the new class, resulting in a reduction of over 400 lines of code (yeah!). In the process, I've fixed a number of issues with using percentage based x, y, width, and height values. Please let me know if you find any problems. Tav

Mac OS X Mountain Lion x86_64 packaging of 0.48.4

Hello, I am not an official packager, but I was eager to have an updated version of Inkscape for Mac OS X and I noticed that nobody is packaging the new version. I've packaged it for Mountain Lion and x86_64. It should be considered a beta packaging. I've packaged from version 0.48+devel r12005 You can download it at: https://rapidshare.com/files/3885726044/Inkscape_MountainLion_x86_64.dmg The Mac Os X packaging infrastructure in the source tree is a bit ancient. Things I've noticed: - configure.ac uses syntax that is not conforming anymore with autoconf/automake/authohear 1.13. Going forward that should be updated. - the scripts osx-build.sh os-app.sh needs update for the newest Xcode versions. they don't work out of the box. - the dylib base relocation infrastructure needed to be rewritten - the Platypus-derived ScriptExec executable might not be needed anymore - in this version, the app bundle executes the sh script directly. Features: - The version I packaged runs gtk-2.0+quartz. It does not need X11/Xquartz anymore to run. This is the direction GIMP has gone to as well. - It uses the same theme as GIMP. I think it's a good consistency decision, and it's the theme that looks best on Mtn Lion. If somebody want to try and report problems, I'd appreciate it Valerio

When is text "outlined" ?

In _renderItem in src/display/drawing-text.cpp there is a conditional section under if (_drawing.outline()) { that never seems to execute. Oddly, give its name, it appears that what it would do if it was ever activated, would be to draw the glyphs and then fill them. (Not stroke them). A breakpoint was placed in there and Inkscape was run for a while, making edits, rotating, scaling, stretching, changing the formatting, converting to paths, but nothing caused execution to enter that section. Hi, Which version of the lib2geom Python bindings is recommended for use: Boost-Python or Cython? I can build both versions on Windows, but I cannot use them. std::string with char*

Hi, It is good we are slowly moving to using std::string... but mixing it with char* can be tricky. In particular, I've seen several bugs recently when char* is a null pointer. You cannot initialize a std::string with a null pointer. You will get at run time: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error' what(): basic_string::_S_construct null not valid I don't know what "best practice" is but this seems to work: std::string my_string = c_string ? c_string : ""; You can also not compare a std::string to a null pointer. Inkscape Trademark Policy

Hi all, One of the Inkscape Board's actions in 2013 was to establish a trademark policy for the Inkscape name and logo. With the Software Freedom Conservancy's help we've completed the registration and documented under the About menu item on the website: http://inkscape.org/en/about/trademark-policy/ The motivation for doing this was due to questions that kept cropping up from people wanting to use it for legitimate purposes (e.g. using our unmodified logo on merchandise), and from people noticing our trademark used illegitimately (e.g. selling unrelated software using our name or logo). We wanted a policy that would provide clear guidance for all these uses, that would be liberally permissive for non-commercial and FOSS-friendly commercial uses, while prohibiting obviously fraudulent uses. Along with this, I've added a FAQ entry (below) with a brief summary. Bryce == FAQ: How are the Inkscape name and logo protected? == The Inkscape name is trademarked under U.S. Trademark Law, and held and administered by the Software Freedom Conservancy. Our policy is available on the website, and describes the conditions under which you can use our name and logo. We've aimed to make our requirements reasonable and friendly: We want to avoid things like other groups claiming to be or represent us when they don't, or to distribute our software in ways that aren't consistent with our license. The logo is similarly trademarked and covered by our trademark policy. We're cool with people creating derivative works that help promote Inkscape or make it fit in with a given user interface style, but we don't want to see it abused by companies that might incorporate it into their own logos. For merchandising, you are welcomed to use our unmodified logo; for anything else, please contact the Inkscape Board for permission.

I've been trying to follow it in gdb but since the memory pointers move around from run to run, and just running gdb seems to change what inkscape does (probably because mouse events are caught in strange ways, or windows overlap), it is really tedious. I ask because my text decoration mods blow up in style.cpp in sp_style_paint_server_ref_modified() when a certain simple object is selected on the drawing surface and then copied - but not if it is cloned. That object is just this: <text style="font-size:40px;fill:none;stroke:url(#MyPattern);stroke-width:5;" y="40"><tspan>A<tspan style="text-decoration:underline">B</tspan></tspan></text> The copy (==^C) triggers an insane amount of activity which passes in and out of style.cpp, where signals are attached and detached, apparently to/from the same objects much of the time, until eventually it drops into the function mentioned above with a PaintServer server that no longer matches the ones in style->stroke and style->text_decoration_stroke (which match each other), which triggers the crash. (After having previously been in that same function maybe a dozen times without issue.) It is my impression that there is vastly more activity for this simple copy then there is in just reading in that section of the file in the first place. (It definitely calls sp_style_write_string() at least 2 times for each of the styles in the section being copied, probably because execution control is through the setting and resetting of modified flags, rather than by doing a single "atomic" 1:1 copy.) Conversely, this object: <text style="font-size:40px;fill:url(#MyPattern);stroke:none" y="40"><tspan>A<tspan style="text-decoration:underline">B</tspan></tspan></text> copies without issue. It too triggers a lot of activity, including redundant sp_style_write_string() calls, but somehow it avoids whatever pitfall the first one falls into. As far as I can tell the implementations for style->text_decoration_fill and style->text_decoration_stroke are symmetrical, so why one crashes, and the other doesn't is pretty mysterious at present. It has something to do with the paintServer href, since there are no problems with text_decoration_stroke when it does not use a pattern or a gradient. Tracing execution in this region is no fun since much of it is driven by signals that trigger calls to stored references to functions. I can watch it creating patterns, objects, and styles, but figuring out which is which solely from their pointers, which change from run to run, is not a lot of fun. Future plans for XML namespaces in Inkscape and SVG 2

Are there any plans for Inkscape to move away from XML namespaces when SVG 2, HTML 5 and Web Components will become widely supported and XML namespaces will get deprecated? If this is the case, I think it would be great opportunity to clean up the current namespace mess. Ideally, I would like to see all vendors of SVG editors to agree on a common “editor” namespace that would be implemented with HTML 5 data- attributes and custom elements. My proposal: 1. Drop “dc:", "cc:" and "rdf:" namespaces and remove any elements and attributes using them as this is just useless noise. 2. Drop "xlink:" namespace prefix (as defined by the SVG 2 spec). 3. Convert all elements in “inkscape:" and "sodipodi:" namespace to custom elements with "editor-" prefix (as defined by Web Components spec) 4. Convert all attributes in “inkscape:” and "sodipodi:" namespace to data- attributes (as defined by HTML 5 spec). Future plans for XML namespaces in Inkscape and SVG 2

Hi all, If anything I think the namespaces et al should be optional by using export switches. That would allow every user to create his own specified exports. Currently the is the Inkscape SVG file and plain SVG and optimised SVG, but I think it would be way more useful if there were just two kinds of SVG files. Inkscape native and export, the latter of which could be optimised with switches. If you'd then have a list of templates for optimisation (with a description on what it is used for)that would set these switches for the users, it would facilitate the user to find the right flavor of SVG. Currently you'll have to handcode a lot to create the right flavor and using such export facilities would simplify the process. In any case removing the XML namespaces doesn't feel like a good option as long as many people are using legacy software to get their SVG to parse right. Blink of all parsers imho is NOT the default to go with when it comes to parsing SVG and there are more things done with SVG than just produce content for the Android platform. SVG 2 seems still very much in flux and I would suggest not doing anything drastic until the recommendation level is reached, regardless of what a juggernaut like Google is doing. I guess they're flexible enough when it comes to exploiting standards for their own benefit as do all the others to try and push things their way, but that is basically what standards are for. To force the monopolists to adhere to standards. Not the other way around. Google in that respect can have a look at what happened to MS the past decade. And it may very well be the opening that MS would like to see if Google would divert. There are several products Google tried and dropped as well, without a blink. Please stick to the standard with tenacity. Any decent developer can handle the bloat. Oh,.. and... Happy Chinese New Year! Jelle Mulder

Waf build system, second try

Hello everyone, I conducted an experiment in building Inkscape with Waf, redoing the work I did a long time ago with a newer version (1.7.15) and using more of its features. A correct build of Inkscape, with internal libraries built separately, "inklib" built as a shared library, Bazaar revision fetching and .po file compilation, requires less than 250 lines of Python script (!!!). I read on some mailing lists that Debian refused to package some software using Waf, because Debian considers shipping the "Waf binary" to be incompatible with the DFSG. I circumvented this problem by adding the Waf source distribution to the tree, which is a little bigger, but DFSG-compliant and works exactly the same. The code will be up shortly at lp:~tweenk/inkscape/waf-build, if anyone wants to check it out. Regards, Krzysztof

Hi Isobel, I'll be on vacation for a week, can't give a detailed answer now. But I am not the right person to ask anyway :) I think _building_ is the easy part, but getting all the include flags correct for all platforms is not. (which is "configuration" that you mean?) An example of what would be nice to have is the ability to specify additional compiler flags for each folder. Current architecture's biggest problem is that it is not crossplatform. Before I do, do you think you could tell me what it is you want from the build? What are the essentials and what are the nice-to-haves? Where do you see the problems in the current architecture and what are its strengths? I'm only after some pointers so I don't set off in the wrong direction. I'll start the ball rolling with these: - Documentation. People who are new to Inkscape should find it easy to edit the makefiles. - Separate configuration and build cleanly so when the configuration phase doesn't do what you want for one reason or another, it is straight-forward to manually configure the build options in one or two files. - Separate compilation and installation/packaging. Installation is generally performed as root, and all too often in GNU software libtool and the like get their teeth into a 'make install', turning it into compilation job. This is wrong. - An ordinary build job should do the minimum work in the minimum time. For this I propose a flat makefile structure, perhaps composed of included makefiles. Parallel makes like this perform correctly and have no scalability issues whereas recursive makefiles are beset with problems and complication. - It should be simple to modify build flags and make alternative targets for debugging purposes. I wouldn't describe it as dazzling, but it's a start. Yours, Is.

Copying text with pattern stroke and fill + text decoration issue

Hi all, After adding pattern fill and stroke support for text decoration I found that if both text decoration and a pattern are active, then trying to copy a text object with that combination crashes inkscape. That is, in rough terms, if the input file contains: <text > <tspan style=" pattern fill " > A <tspan style="text-decoration:underline">B</tspan></tspan></text> it loads and renders properly. But if "AB" is selected as an object (not as the text) and "^c" to copy, it crashes in style.cpp in sp_style_paint_server_ref_modified because "server" is not the same as style->getStrokePaintServer() (or style->getTextDecorationStrokePaintServer(), but these last two are identical in the test cases.) The clue comes from the "pattern5506" above. That ID isn't in the original file, it is somehow created during the copy operation. Can somebody tell me where that is happening? The object construction when the file is opened or reverted is in style.cpp, if the copy feeds through there too, I guess the question becomes "where is the SVG created" that is fed into it. If the text-decoration just uses solid colors and fills there are no issues copying a complex formatted text object with text decorations. Hey All, Thankfully it's been a while since this has been an issue, but it seems that a reminder is needed. The only real rule we tend to have for committing to trunk is "don't break trunk". Unfortunately, trunk is currently pretty broken when trying to work with imported bitmaps. If whomever broke it can get back to fixing it, it would be greatly appreciated. In the future, just remember, if you won't have the free time within 1 day to fix something you might have accidentally broken... please wait to commit it until you do. If you can not figure out an appropriate fix, please revert the changes and work via patches in the tracker or in a branch until you can figure it out (so others can help test). Cheers, Josh

It's more broken than that, unfortunately, since on my Ubuntu test machine the inkscape binaries from 12978 on no longer even get to the point where they put any graphics on the screen. The reason it is crashing is complex enough that it really is above and beyond the call of duty for other developers to have to figure it out. (For instance, the failure mode is different in the debugger than outside of it.) So, Martin, please pull out all of the image changes from around 12939 through 12978 and test them for a while in a separate branch. Before resubmitting them to trunk, please have people test your branch on other platforms. Or at the very least run valgrind on it and make sure there are no (new) memory access issues in the code you are adding. (Admittedly this is a bit of a pain since there are already so many memory issues in Inkscape.) These image changes must have worked on Martin's machine, presumably because the memory problems didn't happen to blow up anything there, but they are show stoppers for me. Writing Tests for URI

Hi devs, I want to write a test suite for uri.h/uri.cpp; I had a look to see if there are existing tests for the code and I admit I find myself a little confused. There's a directory called cxxtest which contains tests and then there are *-test.h files in the actual codebase. My feeling is to use extract-uri-test.h, copy it for a new uri-test.h file. But this might be wrong. New URI functionality includes: dealing with data uri, getting full path name (previous work) and further intergration between it and io/uristream.cpp to feed that lovely data in transparently when needed. Should conclude with the ability to quickly move any href from attribute to workable data. Martin,

Traditionally, we specify a point target for us to reach, and award us points based on the severity of the bug: 3, 6, 9, or 12 points for low, medium, high, and critical. Strange Error

Hi, I participated is GSoC 2013 and wrote code for Inkscape. I was working in WIndows last year and sometime around December I decided to port my branch to Linux (Ubuntu 12.10 , in my case) . Strangely, I am caught up with this error, which doesn't trouble me at all in my Windows branch: "ui/dialog/dialog-manager.o: In function `Inkscape::UI::Dialog::RecolorArtwork::getInstance()': /home/arshdeep/Desktop/InkS-Repo/recolor/src/./ui/dialog/recolor-artwork.h:38: undefined reference to `Inkscape::UI::Dialog::RecolorArtwork::RecolorArtwork()' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status " This happens only when I am associating a dialog box of the tool that I made last year thorugh the codeline: " registerFactory("RecolorArtwork", &create<RecolorArtwork, FloatingBehavior>); " inside of dialog-manager.cpp. The RecolorArtwork class is mirrored directly from FillAndStroke class and I can't pin point why this error crops up ? Removal of popt

Hello The bug which is keeping us with popt has been recently fixed. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722025 This means we can remove several kb of code and remove one of our dependencies by changing command line parsing from popt to GOption. C++ explanation please

Sometimes it is hard to shake off decades of C programming, so please bear with. In src/display/drawing-context.h near the top one finds: class DrawingContext : boost::noncopyable { public: class Save { public: Save(); Save(DrawingContext &ct); ~Save(); void save(DrawingContext &ct); private: DrawingContext *_ct; }; and in drawing-context.cpp those methods all use ct and _ct for the variable names. Which is all fine and would be no issue at all, except that below the lines just cited in drawing-context.h every place one finds a reference to ct or _ct it is a cairo_t or a cairo_t*, not a DrawingContext. Can somebody please explain why it is considered helpful in C++ to use "ct" to mean two different things like this in the one header file? The disadvantage of doing it the way it is now is that when somebody like me encounters _ct elsewhere in src/display, and looks for it like this: grep '[\* ]_ct[; {]' src/display/*.h it finds two definitions: DrawingContext *_ct; and cairo_t *_ct; with the end result that one must read the file to figure out what is actually going on. hi list. I'm taking a look at the janitorial task, specially to the forward declaration in the wiki[1]. But there is something i'm not sure about. You can use the forward declaration only if you're using the class as a pointer and without using any of its functions/attributes ? or is it just when using the class as a pointer ? for example, in attribute-rel-util.h, i can get rid of the xml/node.h include, but sp-css-attr.h doesn't seem to work. However, when I implemented text_decoration display, which is called from _renderItem (Z) the code naturally used DrawingContext and _nrstyle (E), and neither of those is available in renderGlyphText (M), which greatly complicates implementing text decoration for render. Hi Martin, Let me start with telling that I'm thrilled that you're doing work on external <use> links and have some working code. I hope it will find its way into the 0.91 version as it will make my life so much easier. However, while you're at it. Three questions arise. - Can this mechanism be used to add external CSS as well? I know Bruno Wick is working on that as well, but it seems you're on a roll here and would be the missing link (pun intended). - Would it be possible to create a save option where such external files are concatenated into one big whopper of a file? Or even better, send it all to a single root file of users choice (oh joy!)? With some nice check marks to add or not CSS, external <USE> objects, etc? It would solve a problem for all those browsers that do not support external linking or have bugs*. *(like webkit that supported external links till Chrome version 19 and then Blink had this nice regression that yet has to get solved. Opera works fine till version 12.5 and then they went Blink, Firefox can only handle links one directory level deep these days, sigh. I foresee a brighter future though) - And the very whopper question that probably stretches your patience.. How about kicking all <use> objects to external files and style info to external CSS? <script> to external files? Again with switches for each type of export. I gather this to be a whole other ball game and probably not ready for 0.91, but what power would that give to Inkscape as authoring tool for web projects! Ehm,.. sorry if this abuses the dev list as it sounds very much like something I should throw at the bugtracker wish list, but 95% of my request get timed out due to latency I experience in Chongqing, China, so I never manage to send something there. What is the intended purpose of this line of code?

Hi all, While trying to find a place to patch in text-decoration writes so that they show up in cairo based file types (PDF and the like), I noticed that simple multicharacter tspans were being broken into single glyph writes by this line in TNG-Output.cpp: && (font_matrix * glyph_matrix.inverse()).isIdentity() because the test is always false. Here is the link to it in context (barring edits to that file in a revision after I send this) http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/view/head:/src/lib… If that one line is commented out it lets something like <tspan>123456</tspan> pass through to renderGlyphtext() in one big chunk, but other than that, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Can somebody tell me why that test is there? It seems to be doing the wrong thing in all the test cases I have run through it, unnecessarily breaking up the writes, but that doesn't mean that it does not resolve a problem that arises in some case I have not yet considered. See the commit here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/revision/12939 I really didn't expect this to work, I thought it'd be step one in a chain of items to fix. But it actually works and I'd like other dev's input to see if it's doing the right thing. Text decorations, GUI

Text decoration control requires three GUI fields: Line: NONE, or any combination of: underline, overline, linethrough, blink Style: solid, double, dashed, wavy Color: From Text or (Color setting widget) I'm thinking about what the GUI should look like to access these. My first thought was to add them to the "A" (Create and edit text objects) part of the GUI, since text decoration does not make a lot of sense without text to decorate, and this sort of thing would be in a part of the GUI like that in a Word processor. But that part of the GUI is already packed with options, to the extent that on my computer I can only see all the options when Inkscape fills the entire screen. If text decoration was added there, it would never all fit. So my second thought was to maybe put these in "A (with a wavy line through it)" as (Create and edit text decorations). That would let it fit on screen better, at the cost of making the line of icons down the left side of the screen one longer. The third option is to add a second line of options to the existing "A". That would use up more vertical screen space, but it would have the advantage that all of the text and text decoration formatting options could be on screen at once. This is more of a departure for the GUI, since it seems not to happen anywhere else. Thoughts? (Note: "blink" line type is emulated with a type of double line style. I don't expect true blink display to be found in many SVG viewers, ever, so all Inkscape has to do is indicate that it is set.) Is there at present anything in the Inkscape GUI where a check box widget is exposed when one of the left side icons is selected? As far as I could tell all of the widgets exposed by selecting one of those icons are of the "select one" type. Regards, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Menu option for web pages.

The one major item that is available in html5 that I miss in Inkscape 48.4 is the drop down menu feature. I can emulate it of course with a second (third etc.) copy of the entire index.svg page with the menu dropped down. It would be cool however if I could overlay the first page with a smaller page consisting of just the menu items, live of course. Because we're now in the Chill phase of the release cycle, I need to inquire as to the status of any unfinished features for the 0.91 release. We still have ample time before the release, but what we want is for any feature that will take more than a month or two to reach full maturity, to be postponed for a future release. Inkscape 0.48.5 (again!)

Hello All, It's great that we're moving forward with 0.91, but I still think there's merit in pushing a quick bugfix release. There are a lot of high-importance bugs fixed in the 0.48.x branch [1] including a number of build-failures on current linux distros and OS X. There are currently only six backport proposals remaining [2]. Are there any other known issues preventing us from pushing the release? Removing a property entirely from a style list?

Hi, I have been experimenting with adding text-decoration control to the "Text and Font" dialog. It is working (crudely) except I have not yet figured out how to remove the text-decorate property from a "style". That is, to go from: style="text-decoration: underline wavy #ffff00;fill:#ffff00;stroke:#006400" to style="fill:#ffff00;stroke:#006400" To add this property, or to modify it, this works: sp_repr_css_set_property(css, "text-decoration", td_full_string); and these work: sp_repr_css_set_property(css, "text-decoration", "none"); sp_repr_css_set_property(css, "text-decoration", "inherit"); putting "text-decoration: none" and "text-decoration: inherit" in the style. But while this looks like it should have eliminated any mention of text-decoration from the style: sp_repr_css_unset_property(css, "text-decoration"); it only succeeded in moving the existing text-decoration from wherever it was to the end of the style. In the file src/xml/repr-css.cpp it says that that unset function sets "inkscape:unset" for that property. Is something else (that I need to modify?) supposed to see that and then really delete the property? Is there an sp_repr_css_remove_property() somewhere that I have not found? External CSS support

Hello Bruno, Having been in China for quite a while I understand the situation you're in using low bandwidth. It would be way cool to have external style sheet support in Inkscape and something that has been on my wish list for quite a while, so please continue. Even if it's ugly coding and creates a performance hit when loading Inkscape, I think it would be worthwhile to have it. Maybe using a switch in the prefs to turn it on or off, for performance improvement. Added to that is another question. How feasible would it be to use the external style sheet support code you're currently making to do the same for external <USE xlink:href="file.svg#objectID"/> ? I have the idea that it would be pretty similar in scope, reading data from file and changing style attributes for CSS and reading and adding SVG code to the SVG code in memory (leaving the file code alone). If it isn't too much work, could you experiment with it a little to see how feasible it is? It would kill two BIG flies in one go if it would work and greatly increase the productivity of Inkscape as an authoring tool. You'd certainly be one of my hero's if you can make this work in Inkscape. I can also imagine Tav's Symbol tool to increase usability by using external links to symbol files rather than embedding them into the code like it currently does, but that would be food for 0.92 I guess. Last but not least would be an option to save all linked content into a single whopper of a file and an option to export all style info and <use> objects to external files. Hmm,.. you cannot prevent me from dreaming now can you? Cheers, Jelle Mulder

Inkscape with Vagrant - Test Inkscape with only 3 commands

I'm not sure of how many of you use Vagrant so this post will be a bit long to describe the basics and the reasoning behind what I've done. So last year when I got involved in Inkscape development it took way too much time to set up my development environment and all those packages that were needed cluttered up my system. During the fall of 2013 I got suggestions from several other non Inkscape developers to try out Vagrant when I develop PHP/Wordpress applications. This weekend I finally had the time to try out Vagrant and I'm now curious what others think about using Vagrant for easier testing of Inkscape. ### Installation of Virtualbox and Vagrant Virtualbox 4.3.2_Ubuntu r90405 (from repository in Xubuntu 14.04) Vagrant 1.4.3 .deb file from http://www.vagrantup.com/downloads.html ### Only three commands needed After installing Virtualbox and Vagrant this is all you need to do: bzr branch lp:~inkscape.dev/inkscape/vagrant inkscape-vagrant cd inkscape-vagrant vagrant up The above three commands will first branch the Inkscape branch with the three required Vagrant files and then launch a virtual machine with Inkscape 0.48 from the Ubuntu 12.04 repository pre-installed AND compile the current checked out Inkscape branch. (BE AWARE, download of 2GB vagrant box will be done the first time you run "vagrant up"). ### What to expect When Vagrant has set up the Virtualbox VM it will boot it up and run a custom compile script within the VM. You can login to your VM with "vagrant" as password. In the Unity bar you'll have two Inkscape icons, the first one will launch repository version of Inkscape and the second will launch the dev version currently checked out...though you'll have to wait until the compilation is done before it works. The following image is what to expect when the compilation is done. http://www.christofferholmstedt.se/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/ubuntu-vagran… ### Hint for faster compilation of Inkscape The default settings in the Vagrantfile is now 1 processor and 512 MiB ram, this is not the best options when you want to compile stuff. The reason for the low default settings is that if someone with really low-spec computer tries it out, it will at least boot up and run and not crash due to demanding more memory than available on the host. Recommended settings are as many processors as you have and at least 2 GiB of ram for the guest system. If you edit the "Vagrantfile" you'll see two lines commented out with recommended settings. In one line: after branching the Inkscape repository and before running "vagrant up" edit the Vagrantfile to configure the virtual machine to use optimal settings with regard to your host's capabilities. I run with 4 CPUs and 2048 RAM. ### A detailed description of what is going on When you run "vagrant up" the Vagrantfile in the repository directory of inkscape repository will be read. It will first try to find what is called a "box" in Vagrant terminology...basically an ISO that is specific to the vm provider you're using, in this case Virtualbox. Each box includes a basic OS with all the pre-installed software you need. If you run the above command you'll start by downloading a box I have manually set up during the weekend. This file is 2.0GB so it will probably take some time to download (but you only need to download it ones). The next step is that Vagrant will make a copy of this "box" to be used as the new virtual machine. After copying the box, Vagrant will start configuring basic settings such as networking and shared folders for the VM. In the supplied Vagrantfile I've configured so the inkscape repository on the host machine will be mapped to /home/vagrant/inkscape. After that is complete the new virtual machine will start compiling Inkscape and installing it to /home/vagrant/opt/inkscape-dev/inkscape and an icon should already be in place in the unity bar. When you're done you can shutdown the VM and on your host run "vagrant destroy" to remove all data about the newly created VM, no mess left behind on your host such as build-essential packages. ### Rationale behind a large "golden image" Most other developers that use Vagrant use it for server environments without desktop packages. Installing "ubuntu-desktop" with apt-get downloads around 1000 packages and installs them, having to do this each time you want to test a new branch is not a viable solution. It's therefore better download a 2.0GB file ones instead of re-installing ubuntu-desktop several times. At least that is the trade-off I've made during my first tries this weekend. ### The possibilities The main possibility is that it easier for new testers/developers (and existing) to test the latest Inkscape in a specific environment (VM guest) that doesn't mess with their own host system. The suggestion I present here in this email is with the goal to make GUI testing easier. For those that are mostly concerned with development and just want to make sure Inkscape compiles properly another Vagrant environment could be set up which would be a lot smaller. I did a small test of this which is available on launchpad in a separate branch [1]. ### What has to be done. 2.0GB "golden image" is really big, way too big. The process of creating this image was done manually by me during the last weekend, this process should be automated with "Packer" [2] and start with the Ubuntu desktop image instead of the server image. If the Ubuntu ISO can be as small as 800MB so should this "box" be (or can it be that small?). When the creation of the "golden image" is automated I would look in to the possiblity of creating several different versions of it for different operating systems such as Mac OS X and Windows guests. As Virtualbox is cross-platform testing could with this approach be done in a many-to-many relation. Those with Windows host could test Mac OS version in a VM and Mac OS hosts could test Windows version in VM (with the restriction that I assume everyone would need a separate license key for OS X and Windows). An important point to make is that no matter which OS the guest is running no custom commands must be run on the guest by the user, it's all automated so someone that hasn't used Ubuntu can test Inkscape on that platform anyway. ### Questions With many possibilities even more questions arise. The main question I have is if this looks like a valid approach to testing new features? Is it worth it? Does it make it easier for anyone else? Are there better/easier approaches to testing new Inkscape versions out there? ### What is Vagrant I would say that Vagrant is a frontend for several different virtualization technologies and the official one-line is "Create and configure lightweight, reproducible, and portable development environments" [3]. Blending mode in layers

Initial text font not the same for root and regular users

On my Ubuntu system, if inkscape is run by root, after wiping out the ~/.config/inkscape directory, it comes up with "sans-serif" as the default font, and that is what is stored in ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml. When the same thing is done from a regular user account it comes up as "Sans", and that goes into preferences.xml instead. For the life of me I can't see why this happens, since unless I'm missing something the protections on all of the font directories are set world readable, and the results for both accounts for fc-list | grep -i sans and fc-list | grep -i serif and fc-match 'sans-serif' are identical. Sans is also strange because it isn't present elsewhere in the font list, only at the top, above the divider line. I understand that means there isn't actually a "Sans" font on the machine, and that fontconfig is picking something else to fill in that space, but still looks odd. Anyway, this also makes me wonder if when Inkscape hits a font like "sans-serif", which on my system only shows the "normal" type, the pull down list should look like: normal (black) italics (grayed out and not selectable) bold (grayed out and not selectable) bold-italics (grayed out and not selectable) Other special types that are present in some fonts (condensed) can be added, and the end user probably will never notice when they are missing, but a font format list that does not include the standard ones looks strange to me. GUI for feCompoentTransfer

Hi, Inkscape can render the feComponentTransfer primitive but cannot create or modify the primitive. I've hacked a GUI for the primitive and would appreciated if those knowledgeable in such things could have a look at the code and test it out. One thing that doesn't work is updating the rendering when the 'type' value is changed. I don't see how to connect a signal to force a rendering update. Hi all, Who knows something about Dialogs and DockBehavior? There is this piece of code in /ui/dialog/dock-behavior.cpp: void DockBehavior::set_sensitive(bool sensitive) { // TODO check this. Seems to be bad that we ignore the parameter get_vbox()->set_sensitive(); } The code has not been touched for a long while. Hope someone can help me clean it up. If you know how to test this part, just change it to get_vbox()->set_sensitive(); and see if it breaks (or fixes!) anything. If not, go ahead and commit it. Thanks, Johan

Dangerous code in widgets/icon

Hi all, Just found a case of duplicate variable naming that looks very error-prone. In IconImpl::imageMapNamedCB in src/widgets/icon.cpp, line 1617, variable iconName appeared twice, so I renamed the second case so it is clear what the compiler is doing. Also a near duplicate naming (size and iconSize) caused for buggy code. It all worked because I think the two variables are filled with the same data, the functions appears to be doing the same work twice (getting the icon info). Finally, there is also a pointer comparison in the code. (should be a string comparison?) Have a look at my changes in rev. 12870. I hope someone who knows that piece of code better can have a look, see if the code is doing what is intended, and fix the pointer comparison. Thanks, Johan

RSVG / Inkscape render differently

Hi, we have some icons which are made in inkscape but render differently in RSVG, Most (all?) of the applications on Linux are using RSVG, so I was wondering if there is a good way to determine if this is some special inkscape feature or a bug/limitation in RSVG. I think they are too big, maybe can be reduced 60-70% and change the tool box by a sigle item like a nut or a partial wrench, because there are too much detail for a icon in the, beatiful, tool box. Devlibs 46 too slow

After updating to devlibs r46 moving objects around becomes too slow in my system and Inkscape is nearly unusable even for simple drawings. Open a new document, draw a rectangle and move it around: the lag is huge. Even changings of the cursor when hovering over it are updated with delays of 1 s or more. Moving and snapping guides (not to guides), on the other hand, is very fast. My system is a Pentium 4, 3,2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM with Windows XP SP3. Reverting to devlibs r45 (trunk 12277) gives back the previous (acceptable) response time. I know my system is old, but with r45 it's fine for all my needs. Isn't this terrible performance drop avoidable? Inkscape is already not a jaguar... Regards. Inkscape performance - two suggestions

Dear list, this is my first contact to the inkscape developer community and I hope my messages is not received as being overly critical or even offending as I'm clearly talking about things I do not fully understand. You're all doing a great job on Inkscape and I l-o-v-e the upcoming 0.49 release! It is no secret that Inkscape suffers some performance issues when editing or just viewing complex svg files, especially at high zoom levels. Particularly there is a noticable lag between a user action (e.g. zooming in) and the start of the rendering process. I'm not an experienced c++ programmer nor do I know much about how Inkscape works internally but I crawled through the code, following the chain of actions Inkscape does, when its processing its user actions and it turned out that commenting out the following lines instantly removes the bespoken delay and thus greatly accelerates the responsiveness of the program for complex drawings: in drawing-item.cpp, line 586 - 589: :572 if (_cached) { if (_cache) { _cache->prepare(); #ifdef WITH_CSSBLEND set_cairo_blend_operator( ct, _blend_mode ); #endif _cache->paintFromCache(ct, carea); if (!carea) return RENDER_OK; } else { // There is no cache. Furthermore this else-statement should be a rather rare exception to be called but the program behaviour indicates its called not only for every object but also every time the canvas is updated, which might indicate a more complicated issue.. I am fully aware that just commenting this out is not a solution to the problem but maybe somebody more experienced could have a look at the functions involved and come up with a more sophisticated solution? The second suggestion I wanted to make is more a design decision I'm afraid. It is about Inkscape interrupting the redraw process (see sp-canvas.cpp, around line 1967) At the moment the redraw is aborted if its not done in less than 1 microsecond, which, at least on my system, almost never happens unless I pan very slowly. The result are very ugly artefacts on the edge of the screen when the user pans/scrolls the canvas (see this screenshot for clarification: http://www.gorilla-computing.de/misc/inkscape_screenshot.jpg). Has ever been considered to increase that limit so Inkscape can actually finish the redraw more often? I experimented around a bit and a value of 100ms seems to do the job just fine - especially with the cache lag gone. And it should still be low enough to process different user input when needed. If it is not possible to hardcode that limit to a sensible value, maybe one could make it a slider in the options->render menu? Thanks for your considerations! Best, Paul

new scaling/stretching behaviour with Preserved Transforms

This is an attempt to summarize the types of scaling behaviour that can occur, and to highlight a few remaining unresolved issues. Only the behaviour of the visual bbox will be discussed. In Inkscape 0.48.4 there were two types of stretching behaviour, depending on the choice of the preference for Scale Stroke Width. The choice of the preference for Optimized/Preserved Transforms did not affect the visual appearance in Inkscape, although it did in other renderers. With the implementation of the new Cairo renderer both of these preferences now affect the visual appearance, as they should. So there are now 4 possible results. The attached file 4boxes.svg has four identical boxes in a horizontal row. After stretching vertically with the Select tool (F1) we get file 4boxes_12851.svg. The four types of stretch used here were, from left to right: scale/optimized, no scale/optimized, scale/preserved, no scale/preserved. The first three cases scale more or less as expected, the fourth case is a bit unexpected. Since the idea of a constant (apparent) stroke width is meaningless in the case of a preserved transform, what has happened here is that the geometric mean of the apparent horizontal stroke and the apparent vertical stroke has been kept constant during the stretch, which is why the stroke along the horizontal axis is so narrow. Upon looking closer, case 3, scaled/preserved, has a few minor inconsistencies: it is too narrow and there is a vertical offset. These have been addressed in rev 12852. The result is shown in the file 4boxes_12852.svg. There are two remaining issues which may be more difficult to solve. In case 4, no scale/preserved, there is a remaining vertical offset. The offset is actually more serious than it appears to be, because it is persistent, it does not go away even after performing a round trip by contracting the shape again. It appears to be related to the fact that the stretching was asymmetric. If you drag at a 45 degree angle, then there is no offset. This will be reported elsewhere as a bug. The second unresolved issue is that the appearance during the drag is not the same as the appearance after releasing the object (Bug 1258271). i have the attached document: <svg [...] width="602.36218" height="336.04724" [...] viewBox="0 0 170 94.840002"> <sodipodi:namedview [...] inkscape:document-units="mm" [...] > in inkscape "custom size" is set to px, "default units" is set to mm. width and heigth are the size of the document in pixel, all other numbers are in mm. (they all have no unit specified, but i know it because of the dimensions of the drawing) shouldn't the width and height parameter be width="602.36218px" instead of width="602.36218" since the document wide unit is mm (even the viewBox is in mm)? i am using r12832 right now. i think this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/605089 but it says it is fixed there, which i cannot confirm. and even if you say that width should always be in px, having no explicit unit given makes it harder (more obfuscated) for people to understand and parse the documents. regards, TimeWaster -- Save a printer manufacturer. I don't think there can be a hard and fast rule here; it's kind of a judgment call. For X.org bugs in Ubuntu, where there was a crash we didn't know how to repro but the stacktrace pointed out the flaw (a null pointer deref or whatever), I'd commit the patch and mark the bug fixed. We would only need the steps to repro and confirmation of the fix if we needed to backport the fix to a stable release. When the stacktrace didn't point out the flaw definitively, then we would indeed need to get steps to repro. If we had an idea for a patch, I'd post it to the bug report (and put a test package with the patch into a PPA), and wait on committing it to mainline until a user confirmed it. We usually only did this for crashes and lockups that were being hit by a lot of users, so even if one person was unresponsive, we could wait until another person filed a new bug, or commented on the original one. In a lot of cases the crash or hang wasn't deterministic but tended to occur periodically over N hours, so if they ran the package and used it for > 2*N hours we called it good. It's worth noting that the automatic collecting tool avoids creating new bug reports if it finds one with the same stack trace that still has an open distro task. So, being a little aggressive at closing these bugs when you suspect they're fixed is okay - the system will file a new one if it's still crashing for someone. My guess for Inkscape is that the former case is going to be more applicable. Perhaps suv has better advice on Inkscape policy here? Of course, if the codebase is frozen for a release, there'll be stricter rules, since we do want to make sure a committed fix really does fix the issue, but there'll be policy guidance given when we're at that point. By the way, the automatically generated bug reports can be controlled on the ubuntu side. We can arrange to collect some additional logs from the system at the time of the crash. (Very useful for X.org bug reports; maybe less so for Inkscape.) Also, there is a site at errors.ubuntu.com where ALL reported crashes appear, even if the user doesn't file a bug report. This site counts how many of each crash were reported for each Ubuntu release, and links to the bug report if there is one. You have to register to gain access to the detailed data (let me know if you're applying and I'll put in a good word with the ubuntu folks.) So right now, for package 0.48.4-1ubuntu3, the top crashers hit by users this past month are: Bug 1047748 (71 crashes) sp_dtw_color_profile_event Bug 1216167 (14 crashes) pathv_to_linear_and_cubic_beziers (8 crashes) sp_guideline_destroy (8 crashes) sp_ctrlpoint_set_color The interface also allows creating bug reports for crashes that don't yet have one. I created 1261918 as an example. Looks like there's a bunch of crashes that don't have bug reports yet. The detail crash report page shows a full stack trace, and a table showing other instances of the crash, what package version and ubuntu version were in use, and the date and time the crash occurred. You can also look at other examples of the stack trace, which can sometimes be handy to compare data or examine race conditions. For X.org I found this tool very helpful for prioritizing what crashers to work on, and identifying where backports of a fix to earlier stable releases would bring good bang for the buck. HTH, Bryce

Hi, I really love the powerstroke path effect, but some questions. 1. How accessible is the stroke information? From the file, it appears it is stored as a series of points, and stroke properties are derived from proximity to the original path. Perhaps there is an option to output more explicit information so that anything building on top of powerstroke can use it? If there is no possibility of outputing a kind of cache of powerstroke info, are there easy to use functions in the actual code to get this kind of information? I have been working on a mesh along path interface (not quite directly in inkscape yet), which could be adapted to apply gradients perpendicular to paths, make paths change color in the path direction, or perhaps be a base for inserting series of etching lines that conforms to a base path. Having access to powerstroke width profiles would be a great asset for these kinds of extensions. 2. Does the powerstroke computer apply the width always centered on the path? If the top and bottom were allowed to operate independently, it would be a single interface for both line offsetting (with only one powerstroke point) and for powerstroking itself. lib2geom development, make test fail?

Hello, i wanted to use lib2geom in an own project and have difficulties to compile and run correctly; so my co from bzr_lp can cmake, make, but make test fails (for 6 tests, starting with bezier). This is also visible in the toys. Can someone point me please, how to connect to the development and how and where to ask questions. It also would be nice, to clarify the dependencies (BLAS is not found, but it's not clear, what this means). Wishing a happy day, Andreas

Recognizing a circle from a 1 + 3N Bezier description?

SVG has a radial gradient type but neither EMF nor EMF+ do. Instead EMF+ has a gradient type that can be generalized to a radial: set color1 at an interior point and color2 on a closed path around it, and the intermediate points' colors are determined by the position along the ray from the center to the bounding curve. When PowerPoint saves a radial gradient via "save picture as" to an EMF file it also creates an EMF+ description. The "<" indicates the points that are actually on the circle, and the points are grouped to emphasize how they work. These correspond to this drawing, with the point at 9:00 repeated once: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fx_files/6844/2/CircleApproxbyCubicB… If the goal is to import this gradient from the EMF+ this bezier must be recognized as a circle. That might also be worthwhile for other circles encoded as a similar path. Now if the circles were only ever encoded with 13 points in this manner it would be pretty easy to spot one and convert it to a circle. But there might be 25 points in another circle representation, or something else. Does anyone know of a relatively straightforward test to apply to a curve like this (1 + 3N Bezier points) to see if it is a circle (within an error limit)? I really like how the new website is functioning and it seems a slick way to bring in users and developers both into engaging with Inkscape! I've seen a number of text notes appearing on page content which seem to be reminders for tasks or content-to-come. I'm really glad for the diversity of contributors on the site, but as notes/tasks/needs are published on the site (rather than actual useful content itself) I'd like to see an alternative destination established before these notes sit out there too long on our live site. For example, http://inkscape.org/en/download/windows/ contains the line at the top "[[website TODO : pretty buttons showing main download link, + maybe screenshots of the installer.]]" This is a useful reminder to the website author-community, but not text that should reside on the live site. Would a better action be to move these annotations into the launchpad templates/bugs area, or can the web CMS handle notes in the backend for the developers only? Thanks, --Jared

Dealing with OS reported bugs

Hi all I was wondering how to deal with bug reports automatically submitted by the operating system. It is often hard to verify for these bugs how exactly one could to provoke the issue but on the other hand it may be clear from the backtrace that some null pointer check (or related thing) is missing). See for example https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape/+bug/1172484 for which I added a patch. See for example https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape/+bug/1219264 which might be solved by trunk revision 12851 (or maybe revision 12838). Do we mark these reports as fix committed (although we do not know how to provoke the issue)? Do we add a patch and wait for a specific amount of time for reactions? Any experiences on how is it dealt with for Ubuntu? Kind regards K

Hello Inkscape devs, I just noticed today that the new website is up - congrats! I especially love the gallery with all the user artwork. :-) I wanted to help out with the front-end a few months back but got bogged down with my studies, but now I have more free time on my hands. I was thinking maybe I could tweak the visual aspects to work better together (font sizes, spacing, etc), and maybe make the site responsive (adapted for smartphones and tablets)? There were also a few pages that were designed but not implemented - if I did the html/css would someone be able to develop them into the website? Also, good idea leaving out the flags in the language switcher (I had them in there before learning about website i18n and l10n, thinking they'd help to quickly find a language). Cli -> path effect

Hello, My goal is to hatch my drawing by command line. In the gui, you just draw a line -> Path effect editor -> Hatch -> Add Now, in the cli,I saw the "DialogLivePathEffect: Manage, edit, and apply path effects (Shift+Ctrl+7)" option, but when trying to set it right, nothing happens.. --select=myobject --verb DialogLivePathEffect but then, nothing happens. Is this option implemented ? Could not find any clue on how to modify the values (frequency randomness..) This part is *very* undocumented and i could help if i get any answer. Thanks

They'll be merged in one a week or so and uploaded to the live website. These didn't work until today and I'm still trying to identify strings which haven't been marked for translation. As mentioned previously in this thread, details of fundraising are typically discussed *after* a proper estimate is developed. If this is a serious discussion (which I believe it is) then the following actions are up next: 1. Identify the programmers, testers, documenters and users who will participate. (Participants can assume multiple roles) 2. The programmers collaborate to create & share the requirements and constraints 3. The testers specify & share the testing and signoff requirements, based on output of #2 4. All participants specify documentation requirements to meet needs of both the users and the future developers/maintainers 5. Estimate the cost & delivery schedule 6. Design the fundraising campaign (which is another separate effort) if you're going to raise funds from the public then you can't be code cowboys about this, no matter if you believe this is a relatively small effort. Performing the above steps and publishing the results helps build momentum for public monetary support and creates tremendous public confidence. it also gives the tech media something to report regularly building up to the fundraising start date. Use the machine wisely, publicity never hurts! Assuming that remote collaboration results require more time than face-to-face sprints, we can shoot for 30 to 60 days for #1-5, 30 days maximum for #6, so max 90 days till fundraising. I am not a spammer, lol) So, my email is about funding. I am working with Open Funding http://funding.openinitiative.com/ to assist developers to get crowd funding for Free Software. Open Funding works on a feature by feature basis. For example the core-team at gimp are funding a symmetry painting feature at the moment http://funding.openinitiative.com/funding/1578/ I am not sure how Inkscape is funded at the moment, but I would very much like to assist any developer(s) to get funding for a feature. Also, if you don't need/want to earn money for your work, you could always donate the funds to the project in general. This small scale funding is a great way for users (like myself) to give back, which they are often eager to do, but in a way which is very concrete, forward thinking and achievable. Its much simpler to set up than a large kickstarter campaign and is more deeply routed in the function of the software. Please let me know what you think and if you are interested in getting funding this way, either as a group of core-developers or, if not, as an individual developer. Thanks Anna Morris

While editing an Inkscape-created document, if I delete the ID attribute of a group (or any other element, on further investigation) using the XML editor, and then select that element in the visual editor, Inkscape crashes. The ID in question is not referenced elsewhere in the document. Is it valid SVG to have objects without IDs? It certainly seems like it should be, particularly for hand-crafted SVG. SMIL Breakdown

This is an attempt to breakdown the larger SMIL problem into dependent pieces of work and also define a test which can say if this piece is done. What piece would you like to work on the most? If you can see any gaps or better delineations, we can modify: 1. Preservation - Allow all SMIL elements and attributes to exist in loaded documents and save them back without modifications even if the object's they're tied to are modified. The test is a set of SMIL enabled animations and this might already pass. 2. Propertise - Actually load SMIL elebutes into structures and make them accessible via code. The test would be a code test, call out all the attributes and iterate over times. 3. Internal Time Line - We'd introduce the time dimension to our objects and we'd be able to set a time on them and read back nearest values (no interpolation). The test would be another code test to select objects, set a time and read back attributes. (getAttributeAtTime?) 4. Static Time - We'd allow the user to set a time via the ui or the command line and render that as a static non-animated drawing. The test would be a visual one, load inkscape with an existing smil svg file and pick a bunch of times and export each as a png frame. 5. Interpolation - This can happen along side any other pieces after 3, but it's a well understood problem and testing can be done with either a code test requesting attributes non-key-frame times or a visual test like 4 for non-key-frame times. 6. Renderer - We attempt to create a smooth animation from the attributes. This involves automatically progressing over time and changing the rendered output. The test would be to load a smil svg and see the animation animate on canvas once. (Play button/keycombo?) 7. Timeline UI - This is the most UI design aspect. We add in a way for the user to move through the timeline. We don't have to make the UI look like any existing products. The test would allow a user to drag through a timeline, press pause, start, etc and see the result. 8. Attribute modification - This is where it changes from being a viewer to an editor. Moving and changing attributes while at a specific time can create the required key frames in a linear time progression. Deleting those key times would be useful too. Test would be to create a simple animation from scratch. 9. Export - This is where we save out frames from the render one by one into a desired format. The test is simply the ability to get an mpeg or dir of pngs from an smil svg file. These steps are all really basic and each one should be non-intrusive and capable of being released without effecting the experience for static artists. The next question is; if we were to organise a project around these tasks; how far would we initially go and how much would each step cost? Best Regards, Martin Owens

Hi guys, I wonder to know if you have a mid term plan to add animation support on inkscape (with a nice GUI and all that stuff...). I you do, are you planning to use SMIL or DOM manipulation script ? I saw on your wiki some pages related to animation support but they are all old and do not seems updated. If you don't have time to work on it, could you consider launching an indigogo or kickstarter campaign to raise some funds. I am sure many people will give you money to give that support. In my opinion with HTML5 / CSS3, modern browser, video support and inkscape, animation support in inkscape is the only key missing to be able te replace PowerPoint. I except to see many software based on SVG+animation emerge in the next few years with the HTML5 explosion. SMIL in SVG

Hi, The Inkscape and SMIL thread is getting pretty long so I am starting a new thread on if SMIL is the right solution for animation in Inkscape. I personally think SMIL is quite useful, but you should be aware that Microsoft has been quite forthright that they will not support SMIL in Internet Explorer. They don't want to support a second declarative animation model, the first being CSS Animations[1]. CSS Animations does have some problems, namely at the moment you can only animate style properties (things that you can set using the 'style' attribute). You cannot animate attributes (such as rectangle 'width'). This is suppose to be resolved at some point. Having said that, the other browsers do support SMIL and SMIL is not at risk of being dropped from SVG 2 (as was SVG fonts last week). (Although, I know of at least one Chrome developer who might be happy to see SMIL go.) If there is enough demand from designers for SMIL, Microsoft has been known to change its mind (they weren't going to implement SVG filters at first). But this is someone of a chicken and egg problem. There is the "FakeSmile" JavaScript library that can be used with IE so lacking native support in IE may not be that big of a deal.[2] There is precedence for Inkscape to lead the way. I've had one person who has been around SVG for a long time tell me that without Inkscape SVG would not now be part of HTML5. BTW, I have a page where I created the same animation using SMIL, CSS Animations, and JavaScript.[3] Note that browser support for declarative animation, either via SMIL or CSS Animations is full of little quirks so the tests may or may not work correctly depending on which version of which browser you use. Elliptical arc branch

Hi, The current Inkscape code converts an elliptical arc to a Bezier curve via converting it first to an SBasic curve. This leads to some loss of accuracy to the curve (noticeable now that we are using SVG <circle> and <ellipse> elements where possible) and control over where the resulting nodes will be placed. lib2geom has been patched (r2122) to fix the accuracy problem. Is there a reason this patch hasn't been applied to the copy of lib2geom in Inkscape? (If no, I can apply the patch.) Even with this patch, it might be better to provide a direct route to go from an elliptical arc to a Bezier curve bypassing the SBasic step to have better control over where nodes are placed. I have made a first pass at providing a direct route. At the moment, one Bezier curve is created if the arc is less than pi/2 in length. If it is longer, extra nodes are placed on the major and minor ellipse axes. Can the lib2geom experts have a look? I am sure I have not done things in a lib2geom sanctioned way. The branch is available at: lp:~inkscape.dev/inkscape/elliptical_arc I've attached a test file where the red ellipses/arcs are drawn using an "ideal" conversion to Bezier curves (with four per circle/ellipse) and the blue curves are test arcs. (The Cairo routines convert the arcs to Beziers for display as Cairo/PostScript/PDF do not have a native elliptical arc path segment so just rendering arcs on screen tests the code.) Hello all, I for one applaud this incentive. It's a long standing desire of the whole SVG community to have Inkscape support animation I think. I did a web design course in 2012 in which I made my design students create a website in SVG using Inkscape, notepad++ and Opera 11. One of the assignments was to add animation using SMIL and I made this simple example of how to create a repeating frame based animation. It works in Opera 9.5 - 12.16, but not in their Blink versions. Firefox works fine as well. Blink has a nasty bug/regression/security issue? that prevents external files to be <use>d. http://pjmulder.home.xs4all.nl/svg/exanples/frame_anim/anim.svg Based upon my experience teaching I would like to address the following points. 1. One of the things it does which is currently not supported by Inkscape is to use external SVG files. I would really be a great addition to the functionality of Inkscape if it did. The new Symbol manager already opens external files but then copies content from these file rather than linking them. I'd love to see that as an option to link externally, much like we do with bitmap images. It would make files a wee bit cleaner. There also would need to be an option to collect all linked files into a single whopper for portability. More difficult it would be but quite interesting, to be able to disassemble files into multiple ones again. 2. SMIL is a really easily understandable format for all. ECMAscript is unintelligible for the non coder, but I managed to teach each and every student how to move objects around using SMIL. CSS is a work in progress and to be honest I think it is an ugly way of doing anything really. It always feels like engineering your graphics, much like Postscript editing before the invention of Pagemaker, but then without knowing the context of your objects. CSS is too abstract for most people. 3. If however the SMIL code is just plunked into the overall SVG graphics file, the readability becomes zero. I therefore made them separate the SMIL logic from the graphic content. This has two advantages, they could easily edit the graphics content of their animation, reposition objects in their scene files and all that without influencing the logic code. SMIL also allows for editing the content at two levels. You can either edit the resource file or the <use> 4. Based upon this I would suggest for animation there to be a project file structure rather than single files. It would be useful for normal Inkscape projects too as you often want to separate images from your files rather than have them bloat the whole file and want to be able to use placeholders and replaceable content. Recent change to ellipse to path conversion method?

Earlier today I found one small bug related to images written to WMF files and posted it in launchpad. But while working on that noticed that there was also another binary change in the output that didn't correspond to anything I could see in the images. A careful byte by byte comparison of EMF and WMF output from the lp988601 and current trunk branches showed that outside of my code there has been a change, where the paths returned on ellipse to path conversions are not as they once were. In emf-print.cpp in the print_simple_shape() routine a print statement was added after the call to pathv_to_linear_and_cubic_beziers() and the loop which adds up nodes, lines, and curves. For the exact same ellipse (long axis aligned with x, short with y, axis ratio about 2:1) this is what was found: nodes lines curves lp988601 5 0 4 trunk 9 0 8 They start at the same point, but differ from there. Tried it again with perfect circles and got the same result. The strange thing is that there is no change at all to the geom.cpp file, where pathv_to_linear_and_cubic_beziers() is coded. I also checked to see if anything similar could be seen in the GUI, and it sort of could be. Select the ellipse, select "stroke to path", then edit points. The points on the ellipse are in different places in the two branches, and there are different numbers of points. For lp988602 there is one point on the end of each axis plus one point in roughly the center of each quadrant. For trunk there are the same points on the ends of the axis, plus two points within each quadrant, and these are clustered towards the "sharp" ends of the ellipse. Is this change intentional??? Bug in Blend Modes, Please Help

Hey Devs, Blocking bug lp:850992 [1] is proving impossible to get a handle on for different devs who are not familiar with the blend code base and it's resisting attempts to let us learn about it. We could do with a heavy-hitting genius who hopefully knows something about the blend modes for layers to figure this out. I'm betting it's a single line fix when the little worm is rooted out. To reproduce: Make a new layer with a blend mode other than normal. Group any objects together. Grouping fails to refresh, ungrouping works as expected. The area isn't being cleared by the redraw method like the text bug (I checked), the redraw is simply failing to happen at all. Tracing the update events is what's causing some headaches since both upstream and downstream tracing just seems to vanish. Thanks for your help. Hello Tav, I happen to know these other tools really well, but there is not that much Inkscape can do that the others cannot. That said,.. these are the most important aspect why I started to use Inkscape almost exclusively. ** Some other things Inkscape does that the others do not. *** Inkscape uses SVG as it's native file format. This ensures a minimum of fuss in publishing documents on-line. It has the single widest support of the SVG 1.1. standard of all authoring tools you may find. Some of the tools in Inkscape are without equal. The filter editor allows you to create effects that other tools cannot hope to accomplish simply because their native file format is not SVG. There are always conversion steps you have in other authoring applications that you will not have using Inkscape. Errors therefore are confined to browser or viewer implementation. Though some of the basic functions in Inkscape are a bit Spartan, it often is at the more complex things you can do with vector graphic that Inkscape can do things nothing else can out of the box. No other authoring tool will allow for editing the code directly, through an XML editor, nor does any other authoring tool allow you to add scripts in your SVG code, both in Inkscape and outside it, which will be negated by the editor and left alone during the parsing of the drawing. You can often take arbitrary code generated by other authoring applications or even hand coded SVG and happily edit the file in Inkscape and save it back without it being messed up by the editor. Very few other applications are as forgiving accepting drawings from other applications and then being able to edit them.

When I create a book cover using the perfect book cover template I still need to convert it to either PDF X/3 or PDF X/1-a:2001 format for the printer. Today there is no way to do this in Inkscape. I must import it into Scribus 1.5.0 or Adobe Acrobat just for the conversion. Hi All, I just thought that we could use a quick status check on the embedded libraries in the Inkscape repo... i.e., what we have, and what we intend to do with them. My personal preference is to get rid of as many of them as possible. Here is a list of what I think the current status is... please let me know what you think: * cxxtest - There's a patch for building against an external copy, but it introduces a few compiler warnings and there's no OSX port of cxxtest available yet [1]. We're currently running an ancient version with no customisation... we should really bump to the most recent upstream version and wait for OSX before we can drop it. Also, there's talk of replacing this with the google test framework. * 2geom - Tracking the possibility of building against an external copy here [2]. Last time I checked, there was a crash on startup. Perhaps it would be helpful to explicitly track the upstream revision of lib2geom that's currently embedded in trunk? Until it's packaged in distros, there's not much scope for aggressively pursuing this! * libavoid/libcola/libvpsc - all taken from the Adaptagrams project [3]. Review needed to see what divergence exists between our copy and the upstream version. Not available in many distros. * libcroco - tracked here [4]. All upstream changes merged. Minimisation of the diff in progress, then we can send patches upstream where possible. Available in Ubuntu, at least. * libdepixilize - New GSOC contribution. Any plans for this to be released as a standalone package? Would be good to enable an optional external build. * libgdl - We build against external lib when using the experimental gtk+ 3 branch. All the important patches have been accepted upstream. We'll delete our internal copy when we finally switch to gtk+ 3 builds. See bug #792115 [5]. No further action needed * libnrtype - I believe that there was a plan to replace most/all of this with Pango [6]. Is this still the intention? Hi All, Has anyone played around with the Clang analyzer much [1]? I gave it a quick run last night, and it picked up a few hundred potential issues in our code. At first glance, a lot of them are probably harmless, but the tool is very good at highlighting places where we could be referencing NULL pointers or using uninitialised variables. xlink:href eternal files

Hello guys, I was wondering how much work it would be to get Inkscape to use external file objects in the xlink:href context. I would be way cool if that would be possible and it would make my life so much easier. Now I have to hand code it and rendering is only possible in browsers. But if it would be possible to <use> it in Inkscape and have the result be translated to all those other formats such as PDF it would create its own use case. Just sticking some objects from a library of objects together and separating the logic and the content of a project in Inkscape would be really useful. Granted, the problem arising is the amount of nesting to be available to a file, but if the nesting of linked objects goes too deep (more than 2 steps), it may be an option to copy them to the defs. It would also be useful to then be able to move them from the defs into an external file as to create libraries of objects. Obviously the Symbols tool basically uses this principle for the external libraries of objects, which get rendered in it, so my guess is that Inkscape basically is already capable of it. Giving the option to collate such projects together into a single file or vice versa, ripping them apart would be an added benefit. Cheers, Jelle

Namespace pollution (r12782)

Hello r12782 introduces a third-level namespace called "Tools", i.e. Inkscape::UI::Tools. There are some problems with this: 1. While this does follow current practice, I don't think the current practice is any good. The only result of having such deeply nested namespace hierarchies is the need to tediously type this all out, since if there actually is a naming conflict they prevent, it's a symptom of bad design / naming. 2. "Tools" is pluralized, while "Dialog" and "Widget" are not. This is inconsistent. It is sufficient to put all UI code in Inkscape::UI. This would also remove any doubt over whether to use e.g. "Inkscape::UI::Dialog::Print" (which makes the name as used within the namespace ambigous - "Print" what?) or "Inkscape::UI::Dialog::PrintDialog" (which is redundant) - one would simply use "Inkscape::UI::PrintDialog". In general, 2 levels of namespaces are entirely sufficient. XML tree goes into Inkscape::XML, UI code goes into Inkscape::UI, object (SP) tree goes into Inkscape::SVG (in the future), and so on. Gradients with objectBoundingBox coordinates not being preserved or rendered correctly

If I create a gradient in Inkscape, the default coordinate space is userSpaceOnUse, as opposed to objectBoundingBox (see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/SVG/Attribute/gradientUnits). This is ok, but if I edit a gradient manually (via a text editor or the XML editor) to change it to objectBoundingBox coordinates, I would like it to stay that way. objectBoundingBox gradients are very useful if you want to animate or otherwise interact with the SVG using javascript in a browser -- the gradient will move relative to the object, and you don't have to write extra complicated code to try and keep it lined up. Currently, *a)* Inkscape initially renders the gradient nodes in the correct position, but does not render the gradient colours themselves. So the object has a flat colour. *b) *As soon as I drag one of the endpoints, it reverts to userSpaceOnUse coordinates. Which means that it becomes quite difficult to edit my SVG file in Inkscape ever after! Ideally, the object would be coloured correctly, and if I move a node or endpoint, it would remain in objectBoundingBox coordinates. Better yet, there would be a way to switch to objectBoundingBox coordinates from within the GUI, to avoid having to calculate the conversion maths in the XML editor. It won't be long now before the staging website will be live and what we have in the cms will represent inkscape to any visitors. If you can spare 10 minutes, go over to staging.inkscape.org and have a look around. If there's something you feel isn't fantastic, then consider helping make it better. Dev website deterioration

Hello all It appears that along with the considerable improvements in the "About" pages, some destructive changes to the dev website were made. 1. The coding style documentation and the "getting started" document is no longer available from the menu. In fact, none of the items in the "Developers" menu work. 2. Login does not work at all, and seems to send the password as a GET variable (e.g. it appears in cleartext on the address bar). 3. Menus contain duplicate items. For instance, "Developers" contains both "Bazaar" and "Source code", "Learn" contains both "User documentation" and "Manuals", and the "Donate" item is present both as a top level item and as a subitem in "Community". 4. Hi, Here is a report from the GSoC mentor's summit: To be honest, I didn't learn that much from this years conference. Probably for two reasons: The first is that I (as well as many others) were tempted by the sessions given by Google employees. While these sessions were interesting, they weren't really applicable to GSoC. BTW, if anyone can think of how it could be useful for Inkscape, I've got a $2000 coupon for using Google's cloud platform. The other reason is that there is probably less to learn after attending the summit last year. I kind of guessed this and if the Graphical Web (e.g. SVG Open) conference hadn't been just after in San Francisco I probably wouldn't have made the effort to attend. I did pick up a few things. The most interesting session I attended was titled "Developer Meetings Coding Sprints" but was really about ways to collaborate and communicate. Highlights[1]: 1. Have bug days using IRC. It helps to motivate people if a group is doing this together. It is also rewarding to be able to report "40 bugs squashed today". 2. Hangout using Google's Hangouts. Some people found it quite useful to announce that they would be on-line for a given period of time and let others freely join the conversation. I plan on giving this a try in the next couple of days. (For more organized sessions, the hangout can be live-streamed via YouTube so one doesn't need a Google account to watch.) 3. For serious planning and strategizing, face-to-face meetings are most useful. Separately, Bradley Kuhn, from the Software Freedom Conservancy was there; he is really encouraging us to use some of our pot of money to hold a meeting for this. As a final note, the GSoC timetable has been moved forward by quite a bit. Hello Recently I'm getting mails about Launchpad build failure reports for the inkscape-trunk package. The log seems to suggest that it's not our fault (some dependency problems apparently), but it looks interesting for different reasons: 1. We have Gimp and bash-completion as a build dependency. Why on earth is that? 2. One of the unmet dependencies is libxml-parser-perl. Why do we require this? It looks like we have just four extensions written in Perl - perhaps we could rewrite them in Python and avoid Perl as a hard dependency. Regards, Krzysztof

SVG supports both clipping and filters. Some other formats do as well, for instance, EMF+, (although the supported filters do not match very well between SVG and EMF+). I can see how one would convert those features from other graphics formats to SVG during import (more or less). However, for output to another file type I do not see where either the clipping or filters would be passed, perhaps buried in style? I thought that maybe the clipping was applied upstream somehow, so that the driver level would just draw what was left, but could not test the idea because it seems that clipping has some problems in Trunk right now. For instance, I found this SVG example on the web: http://svg-whiz.com/svg/clipRect.svg and while it loaded into Inkscape (linux or Windows) without throwing a warning or error, and the contents show up in the XML editor, nothing is visible on the screen. I always found it a pity Inkscape does so little with % as part of the beauty of SVG is the use of such values for scaling of objects. I believe % are not accepted in Inkscape and setting the size of an object to 50% will just scale the object rather than make it set to 50% values. Use case for it is for web designs that align objects to a centre point, scale rects to 20% of the right edge of the screen etc. It is valid SVG, but probably a lot of work to implement. Now though I always have to handcode that kind of stuff, so it would be way cool to let Inkscape set those values. Basically all you need to know is the size of the user screen, which can't be that hard either. Think how easy it would be to use % for doing hatch patterns, using nothing but a dash array and a line in a clip area the size of the object the hatching should be in. One line, line hatch + dash array, two lines + dash array, cross hatch with patterns. It renders fine in a browser. At least Inkscape can figure out that 100% should display the document in the screen resolution in this example. Spurious warnings

Hi all, I've been going through a (really small) number of compile warnings and stumbled upon this one: src/2geom/generic-interval.h: In member function 'Geom::Rect Inkscape::Filters::FilterPrimitive::filter_primitive_area(const Inkscape::Filters::FilterUnits&)': src/2geom/generic-interval.h:65:9: warning: 'y' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wuninitialized] src/display/nr-filter-primitive.cpp:146:12: note: 'y' was declared here src/2geom/generic-interval.h:65:9: warning: 'x' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wuninitialized] src/display/nr-filter-primitive.cpp:145:12: note: 'x' was declared here (GCC 4.6.1 (tdm-1) on Windows) The warning seems bogus to me, the value is certainly correctly initialized, and I've added code to check that everything that is assigned to it is also initialized. Hi, I managed to build lib2geom on OS X. Since it was not an easy task I thought it might be useful to share the information with the community. I planned to write a small tutorial and make it available soon. But first I'd like to request some advice regarding the following issues I faced during the build. 1. Avoid glib dependency I wanted to link lib2geom against my application without having to link against glib too so I replaced the following line in src/2geom/svg-path-parser.cpp: _push(g_ascii_strtod(buf.c_str(), NULL)); with _push(strtod(buf.c_str(), NULL)); and removed the glib.h include. 2. Removing librt Since librt does not exist in OS X (and is not required too) I removed the following line in src/2geom/toys/CMakeLists.txt TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(lpetoy "-lrt") TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(toy-2 "-lrt") 3. plotter support

EPS export: different results for level 2 and level 3

Hi, I'm trying to export a BPMN diagram modeled with Oryx using Inkscape to EPS. When using EPS level 3, opened boxes are converted to closed ones. When using EPS level 2, the graphics seems to be converted to images. Does anyone experience similar issues when exporting EPS level 2 vs. level 3? Post-merge EMF work

The cross-platform EMF/WMF support that was merged recently needs some cleanups. 1. libunicode-convert. I don't exactly see why this particular set of functions was separated into a mini-library; I would expect that to be part of libuemf. It is also somewhat misleadingly named. I would name these files e.g. ms-symbol-font-utils.[hc]. 2. I think libuemf should be in a separate directory, like libcola, not tucked away in src/extension/internal. 3. The new code should be made to conform to the Inkscape coding style. In most places it's a matter of running the code through astyle to fix the spacing, but in some cases manual adjustments are needed. For example, the function names in libunicode-convert are utterly non-descriptive ('isNon()' and 'CanUTN()' are not good names for library functions), and the return statements in src/extension/emf-inout.cpp incorrectly use parentheses around return values. http://staging.inkscape.org/en/develop/coding-style/ 4. Some functions, such as msdepua(), have a rather strange mode of operation, modifying the string in place. The interface of those should be changed so that they are easier to use. Regards, Krzysztof

Note that inkscape (0.48.4) is a current issue because it doesn't build with clang++. I've seen documentation of roadmaps and releases refer to the version numbering as possibly up for consideration of revision: "Evaluate changing the numbering scheme to a date-based one, or setting more realistic goals for major (1.0, 2.0) releases" <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap> I can see the next major release after 0.48.x as a candidate for change as the "9'er" may lend itself toward a new scheme. * 0.49.0 --> 0.90.0 (followed by 1.0, 1.1, 2.0...) * 0.49.0 --> Inkscape 9 (followed by Inkscape 9.1, 10.0...) There have been a lot of excellent developments to be release in the next release, including C++, cairo, alignment/distribution along with new possible builds on win64-bit (Partha's help), and native Mac OS X (some almost-ready builds are out there). If these all reach maturity for the release the new builds are providing an increase audience and userbase. A changing version numbering scheme could reflect the developers' acknowledgement of this and demonstrate the activity of the software project. Just IMHO, --Jared

Hi, in 2geom/coord.h there is an epsilon defined as 1e-5. This is used in many ways, e. g. in Geom::are_near, . Now I'm wondering why this value is that big. how to save last tool selection?

Hello. Does anyone know how I can save and restore the last tool selection on startup? You might ask why bother, but for my use case, I want Inkscape to always start out with the eraser tool selected when I'm using the eraser end of my pen (event source GDK_SOURCE_ERASER), to save me from having to tap the erase tool with the eraser end of the pen. Is there any reason why this isn't the default behavior? If saving the tool selection isn't implemented, can someone show how to programatically change the tool selection for the eraser to be the eraser? Appreciate your help, Yale

mouse and tablet touch input lose focus after using Wacom pen

Hello. I think I've found another bug in either Inkscape or GTK: I have a Wacom Intuos 5 and whenever I use my pen, I can no longer use the mouse wheel or 2 finger touch to zoom in and out. It seems the problem is the window loses focus after using the pen. Has anyone else noticed this problem or can propose where to trace to fix the problem? I'm using the latest trunk version and Windows 8.1, but this problem also exists in 48.4. Thanks for helping, Yale

Hey Devs, I've got the django-cms-launchpad plugin working. The first integration is pulling in bug counts for certain bug queries. You can see an examples on this page: http://staging.inkscape.org/en/develop/ What I've done is added a launchpad bug count widget when editing the CMS. You can add them too. Just edit the page, edit the text widget and add a bug count as you might an image. It links back to launchpad if you click on it. The widget has options for what tags, milestones and other items you may want to search for. Not all fields are there yet, but I'm open to requests from our bug managers about what's important to get an over view of. The low/medium/high counts are for colouring. Below low it's grey/white, low>yellow>medium>orange>high>red and this can be used to give us a quick visual on whatever we want to track. Next feature for the django-cms-launchpad plugin is to format our blueprints into a roadmap page. This won't be a widget, but a page and targeted blueprints will be used to generate the list. C++ify workflow

Selectany occurrence of the function, again Shift+Alt+R and rename it But I agreethat it’s a lot of boring, monotonous, repetitive work :) . It took me tons ofcoffee and some really long nightly sessions. Scripting this process isn’t thateasy either. At least now I’ve got some deeper understanding of how the partsfit together… and how not to write code. There were some really nice code partsin these files, e. g. marker.cpp, parsing the viewbox attribute by movingaround a char-pointer. This code appears 1:1 in sp-root.cpp ;) . Regards, Markus

It would use cairo to draw some complex graphics (using math!), and users would want to export these graphics + some text and numbers (derived from the same math) into something printable (pdf is the obvious choice, but svg should be OK too - it's highly desirable that graphic object should be in a vector format, not raster, otherwise it doesn't print well). You know, like generating a report - that sort of thing. Now, the graphic object should probably go as-is (no one really needs to alter it in any way; scale it maybe - that's all), but the layout of the page is something users should be able to change. Which means that there should be some kind of mechanism for creating page templates, and my application would just paste graphics and numbers into them. Thus PDF is out of the question. That leaves SVG. When i started writing this message, i thought that i was going to ask about clipboard formats Inkscape understands. I thought that it would be enough to just swap the cairo-gdk surface used in my drawing function for a cairo-svg surface, write svg into memory, put it into clipboard and somehow paste into Inkscape. Now, don't get me wrong, that would _still_ be awesome. So if you know how to do it - i'm all ears. But that, of course, won't do anything about the rest of the contents that should go into page. So now i'm thinking of something different: create a template SVG document in Inkscape (putting placeholders in places where stuff should be inserted), give it to my application, and it will replace placehonders with real stuff (i hope i know XML well enough to just insert proper XML elements into right places) and save the result as an SVG. Trunk Problems

Hey devs, I've been trying to make some art using the trunk inkscape build. There is some weird problems going on. * Rotating objects mis-transforming after certain number of degrees. * Broken Path 'Difference' producing very odd results. * Non-working load dialog (might be my computer though because it fails in 0.48.4 too which is odd, might be related to the preview) Are these known problems or should I report them all? I'd like to continue to push for a release, so I think we need to get a freeze of some kind in. We can do objectification, code clean up etc later. I've tried several’s ways to do that in gdb, including: "break cssReader::parseFile" then I read this ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6892395/set-breakpoint-for-class-member-…) and tried: "break org::w3c::dom::css::parseFile" I also attempted to use the "file:line" method trying: "break cssreader.cpp:1591" "break dom/cssreader.cpp:1591" In the gdb documentation I was not able to find anything related to debugging class methods in C++. SPLPEItem *lpeitem = dynamic_cast<SPLPEItem *>(item); if (lpeitem) { or C. if (dynamic_cast<SPLPEItem *>(item)) { SPLPEItem *lpeitem = dynamic_cast<SPLPEItem *>(item); I like A (more than B or C) because it limits the scope of lpeitem, and avoids duplicating the long dynamic_cast<> thing. Downside is that it makes the if-statement rather long. We use option A in 2geom if I remember correctly. Please discuss, or add better implementations! Offsetting elliptical arcs

Hi devs, I changed the code that generates ellipses and arcs to using true elliptical arcs instead of cubic Bezier curves. Now there's a little problem: When you create for example a pizza slice and a linked offset, you will see that elliptical arcs are somehow "degenerated", i. e. the number of points decreases with increasing radius. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1236830) Note that the code for offsetting elliptical arcs has been there for quite some time. I'm not sure now whether this is how "offset" is intended to work. What do you think? Regards, Markus

Ellipses, Circles, and Arcs, oh my!

Hi, I see some action on rewriting Inkscape's General Ellipse code. It would be very nice if Inkscape could directly create the SVG circle and ellipse elements rather than use the SVG path element. I realize that this may be outside the scope of the current work but there is one thing that I should bring attention to: The SVG Working Group decided to allow markers on SVG shape elements.[1] Inkscape will actually already draw markers on shapes if there already are markers placed on the shapes in the SVG file (but doesn't draw them "correctly"), however Inkscape does not allow one to add markers to shapes through the GUI. (I'm sure that the drawing of the markers is accidental and not intentional.) It was fairly clear to the SVG WG that for rectangles, there are four markers (one for each corner) and for rounded rectangles, there are eight markers (one at each start and end of a corner arc). See attachment.[2] It wasn't as clear what to do for circles and ellipses. The group decided that there should be four markers on circles and ellipses, located at the 0, 90, 180, and 270 degree points. Inkscape currently represents circles and arcs as two path elliptical arc segments. In order to have four markers, it should be using four elliptical arc segments. I also noticed that the Object->Path command converts a circle/ellipse to a path using eight Bezier curves (and would thus have eight markers). It seems to me that it should be converting to four elliptical arc segments. (After all, converting a rectangle to a path doesn't produce four straight Bezier curves!) Changing SpinEdit width

So, GSoC coding period is over and now is documentation period. I've sent two more commits to the Inkscape repository earlier today. Nathan convinced me to think "why is the project great?" and then I decided to make two more videos (mic is bad, but understandable, I think): https://vimeo.com/75245148 https://vimeo.com/75247946 My strong accent is bad, but I don't have much people to talk to in english, so you guys will need bear it. I hope you guys like the videos. Tell me if this happens. =) So, this is "documentation week" and I'll write more blog posts regarding technical details (and group them under some folder in the repository). I'll also write the so wanted tutorial (I accept hints about its format). After the week is over, so is GSoC 2013 and my responsibilities will move from "GSoC 2013 student" to "lib2geom and Inkscape developer". The first thing I should do is unify the construction of d attributes of path elements and move this abstraction to the 2geom library, then Inkscape and libdepixelize will share more code (always a good thing). Second thing I'll do is prepare a new stable release of 2geom (need to be discussed with the other of you devs) and create a package for the ArchLinux User Repositories. So, something to tease you guys. Me and Nathan (this guy always have ideas. lucky me for having him as mentor) have some ideas about how to improve the Kopf-Lischinski image quality and we decided to publish a paper. Another cool three-months project to work on. I may finish the harmonic maps triangulation (and put it inside 2geom) before implement the new cool ideas. Anyway, I'll have to delay this project for one week, because the community of my other open source project misses me and have some issues demanding my attention. So, another thing: if you guys have a hand-chosen collection of pixel art images with Alpha Channel, please send me. They will help me in the research project. Jabier did the first step and send me a bunch of this images already, but the more the better (and mainly if they are carefully chosen one-by-one). hack-tweaking a filter ?

A lot of the fancy filters do not have any user parameters; i am looking at Filters -> Materials -> Gold splatter, for example. How can I tweak the colors this produces ? (the "gold" is too green for my purposes) Is it a python extension script? I'm failing to find that in the extensions directory. thanks.

That might also accomplish my goal — I could then apply raster color manipulations... currently, that's impossible, if my gold-splatter is in vector form. (AFAICT)

Inkscape 64-bit on Windows

I finally managed to build a 64-bit version of Inkscape 0.48.4 on Windows. I am pretty excited about the build. :) My build environment is Windows 7 64-bit, mingw-gcc 4.8.1 building x86_64-w64-mingw32 packages. One big problem I am having is that some of the icons on the application are missing! I checked all the bug reports and only see a similar issue with Ubuntu Unity. I am convinced the problem is with the path that Inkscape is seeing. VisualBounds for filter effects

Hey Devs, I've just committed a fix for that darn disappearing text and other items. The culprit was a blank _item_bbox, the code for _item_bbox was very sparse and looking back to the history of where it comes from shows that Niko Kiirala introduced it back in r3505 (2007) to improve filter effect handling when transformed. What I've done is stripped it out and replaced it with the _bbox used for all the other operations. This means the bounds for the filtering process won't be different for the bounds during other parts of the process. See revision 12528 for the gory details. What I should be sure of is what Niko was trying to do and if Ted Gould (r6891) or Krzysztof Kosiński (r10347.1.21) spotted anything as they were refactoring the code. Please do test trunk for issues surrounding filters and transforms. I'd like to make sure fixing this issue doesn't introduce another. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Packaging of bitmap downscaling fix

I've posted to my ppa packages (for Ubuntu 12.04) of newer pixman and cairo with the downscaling fix, and a inkscape-trunk package built against these. https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/backports/+packages [Installation for Ubuntu 12.04] 1. sudo apt-add repository ppa:bryce/backports 2. sudo apt-get update 3. sudo apt-get install inkscape-trunk # This will also pull in and install newer cairo and pixman 4. /usr/bin/inkscape [Test Case] I've verified this fixes the bug, using the following test case: 1. Draw some horizontal, vertical, and other angled lines, black stroked, 1 unit wide. 2. Export selection to PNG. 3. Delete the drawn lines from Inkscape 4. Import the PNG we just created, embedded. 5. Drag the upper right corner to resize the embedded PNG Broken Behavior: The lines will blink in and out irregularly as you scale the image down; at a certain small scale the whole image will vanish. Fixed Behavior: The lines shrink in size quite smoothly, becoming fainter and fainter grey until you hit a scale that they fade out completely. The pixman package is simply the current Ubuntu 13.10 package (release 0.30.2), rebuilt for 12.04 with no changes. The cairo package is the current Ubuntu package (release 0.12.16), with the downscaling patch applied via the packaging. The inkscape package is just today's snapshot I took from the Inkscape Trunk ppa, with the cairo version requirement changed in debian/control so that it will pull in Have I missed anything? If no one raises an objection, I will upload the pixman and cairo packages to the Inkscape trunk and stable PPAs for Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, and 13.10, and commit the debian/control dependency version change to trunk. I believe that should appropriately solve this bug for all Ubuntu users. Bryce

[Tracing] Tutorial
